[X] Plan Will This Saber Be Baeber?
"Well, how screwed are we?"
Your question to Caster does not go unanswered, but as always his answer is less straightforward than it could be. "Did your master not question herself the same as when the masters of Lancer and Berserker were brought into the fold? Yet she did so anyway, and in time they have proven themselves to be trustworthy and valiant companions. Trust begets trust, Archer; those two became trustworthy because trust was placed in them. If the master of Saber is forced to stay at arm's reach because your master does not trust her, then she will only reciprocate what she is shown."
A simple "you're only as screwed as you make yourself" would have sufficed, but like hell you're going to tell Gilgamesh how to behave around others. Instead, you give your thanks to Caster, and turn your attention to Homura. "I have good news, and I have bad news."
"Give me the bad news first."
"The bad news is that Nagatsuki wants in. Well, only kind of, but she wants in enough not to give her Command Seals up."
"In other words, we have to hurry and find a replacement master before she has the chance to pre-empt us and summon Saber first."
"Well, that actually plays into the good news. At least according to what Caster had to say, if we let Nagatsuki join in, we'll only be as screwed as we make ourselves. We keep our distance from her, and it'll come back to bite us. We treat her the way we treated Mikuni and Kure after they joined up, and she'll reciprocate." At least, that's what you're hoping Caster meant.
"Trusting her is going to be difficult, after what her friend tried to do to my ally."
"Why's that? Didn't Mikuni try the same thing with your friends? In fact, doesn't Mikuni have more bodies to her name than Nagatsuki? The way I see it, after talking with her, we'd be placing ourselves at no greater risk than when we let Mikuni and Kure join the team."
"On the surface, your argument may be sound, but consider my counterpoint- When Mikuni Oriko surrendered, she and Kure Kirika had already summoned their servants. We knew what their fighting strength was at the time we defeated them. On the other hand, we don't know how strong Nagatsuki Miyuki's Saber servant will be, or whether that increase in power will prompt them to make a second pass at someone on our team. In addition, back then there was only Tomoe-san and myself, with Kyouko acting more as a mercenery fighter than a core member of the team. Now there are five of us, so if the addition of Saber to Nagatsuki Miyuki's team causes them to try again, the potential loss to my team would be that much greater than if it were Mikuni Oriko or Kure Kirika only taking out Tomoe-san in retaliation."
"I get it; you're nervous about trusting her after her friend tried to take out your ally. But you gave Mikuni and Kure the benefit of the doubt; and after speaking with her, I'd liek to agree with Caster on this one. You can at least afford her the decency to have a talk with her about this; and who knows? Maybe you'll come to think she deserves a chance as well. I'll let you get back to class now; just try to think about what I said."
"Alright. Oh, and regarding dinner with the Kanames- I'd be fine with going, assuming nothing else comes up that day."
You rub the bridge of your nose where your glasses used to sit. From your body's perspective, having never been given the chance to move beyond the events of this loop no matter how many times you've repeated it, it's only been a month since you stopped wearing them, and even though you know better the action is unconscious to you now. So, Archer wants you to speak with Nagatsuki Miyuki. Your phone vibrates in your pocket.
<Nagatsuki Miyuki: Hey, so that guy who just called me earlier- That was really your dad, right? That wasn't some loony just messing with me?>
What perfect timing on her part. Your fingers fly, and your response to her is swift.
<Homura: Yes, that really was my father who called you.>
<Homura: I assume he told you everything you need to know.>
<Homura: We'll be meeting later tonight to discuss things with you. I'll let you know the details when we're ready.>
You put your phone away and pack up your lunch, mind still reeling from the overwhelmingly corrupting information Kure Kirika decided was her responsibility to share with you. You'll have to repay Archer for his stellar contribution to your sexual education... Oh gods above, that might have been the single worst way you could have worded that. Um... You'll have to repay Archer for giving you bad information; yes, that's much less gross sounding. Your phone vibrates again; Nagatsuki Miyuki, you're assuming.
<Nagatsuki Miyuki: That's probably going to be difficult. My parents aren't exactly going to let me out of the house so easily. You know, the whole 'disappearing for a week' thing. Not to mention they found my booze.>
<Nagatsuki Miyuki: I mean, I'm glad they did, but at the same time it'd be easier for me to leave the house if they didn't.>
Whatever sympathy you feel for Nagatsuki Miyuki is tempered by the knowledge that she made her own choices, and only her own choices contributed to the mess she now finds herself in. She chose to drink her sadness away; she chose to accept the Incubator's contract; she chose to follow Asako Koito; and she chose to remain with her for a week of captivity. Those were her mistakes, so it has to be on her to find a way to subvert her parents' authority and sneak out at night if she wants to be a part of your team. You never realised just how difficult it was for a puella magi who still has parents until faced with the problem of parents who won't let their daughter leave the house.
<Homura: Then you'll just have to think of a way to get out without them knowing, won't you?>
This will serve as a good, impromptu test of Nagatsuki Miyuki's ability to solve problems. She'll need it if she wants to survive in this line of work.
You don't wait for her response before your phone is out again, but your message this time goes out to the members of your team.
<Homura: I have reason to believe that Nagatsuki Miyuki is in position to, and is willing to, summon Saber. We should meet tonight, with or without her, to discuss how to proceed from here.>
With all but one of your teammates back in class by now, it comes as no surprise when your only response is from Kyouko.
<Sakura Kyouko: K sure whatevr. C u l8r>
You put your phone away, for real this time, and make your way to class, thinking all the while of how you're going to get back at Archer for misleading you. And also how to get back at Kure Kirika for having to hear the things she told you.
"Alright team, that's a wrap!"
Kasuga-san calls for practice to end, and you survey your last shot as the other members of the club pack up their things for the day and socialise among one another. "Great job out there today, Akemi," Kasuga-san says, approaching you from the side as he points to your target. "You really had your eye on the bullseye today; keep that up and we'll beat Shirome for sure."
You wonder, if the impossible were to occur and you by some miracle manage to achieve victory in this loop, who will Mikuni Oriko root for on the eighth? Will she cheer for her school's team, or will she cheer you on instead, placing personal loyalty over her school? Well, there's no use in wondering. Things are only going as well as they are for you now in order to break you all the harder when you fail. Fate is a bitch like that.
"Kasuga-san, I had a question I wanted to ask you."
"Sure thing, what's up?"
Your eyes scan over the other members of your team; chief among your teammates, they keep themselves peeled for Mochizumi-san. Fortunately, she's busy chewing out the other two for their slipshod performances this afternoon, so you're free to ask "If Tomoe-san never notices you, or you never work up the courage to speak to her, is there anyone else you have your eyes on?"
"Bit of an odd question, isn't it? Are you perhaps trying to tell me something?" Kasuga-san smiles, quickly adding "Relax; I'm only kidding. I know you and Kaname are together. But I am still curious as to what prompted you to ask."
"Simple curiosity, that's all. Tomoe-san tells me that you've had your eyes on her since your sixth year, but from speaking with her I've never gotten an indication of how she feels about you, so I was wondering if, assuming things don't pan out between you two, if there was anyone else you might consider romancing." Now, it's your turn to be coy; Kasuga-san didn't mean it, but you do. "If not, you could always try getting to know Mochizumi-san better. After all, you already spend plenty of time together as is, running the archery club; so why not?"
"Did Mochi put you up to this?"
"Not at all."
"Just checking." Kasuga-san laughs off the fact that he may have figured out Mochizumi-san's affections; which comes as a surprise to you, considering how hush-hush Mochizumi-san has been about them; and he says "So, we were all thinking of going out together Saturday after practice. Maybe to the mall, maybe for pizza; we're not sure yet. You interested?"
"I might be," you say. "Assuming I don't have anything else happening that day." You check the time on your phone; Madoka should be getting out of her own club now as well, so once you've packed up all your gear, you head out in search of your pink-haired girlfriend. Whether you're able to make it will depend on whether or not Kaname Junko plans to have her dinner get-together on Friday or Saturday. If it's Saturday, it goes without saying that you'll choose dinner with your girlfriend and her family; but if it's Friday...
