Conference Quest: Glimmer Edition (Multiverse Quest)

Part 2
The songs of the fair folk drowned out the peace of the forest. It was a merry sound, not nearly sober enough to carry a tune, but the hundreds of voices were swept up in the energy of the festivities. It was loud. Wine, song, the smoke of the blumroot tree, and more than one knock-out brawl.

Aluwin sat at the top of a tree, watching the festivities from above. This was the one part of forest life she didn't expect. While there were some things from her old life she missed, boring parties where nothing really happened weren't among them.

Somebody called her name, and gave her a wave. She waved back and smiled, even though she knew this just meant that people would know she was up there. She was tempted to sneak off with a skin of wine and hide away with some of the other unfestive sorts who were avoiding conversation, but she loved the energy too much to to that.

A girl swooped down next to her, blue features and wings decorating her form. "I've been looking for you everywhere!" she said.

"Yes, Blueberry, I've been up a tree the whole time. As usual."

The owl-girl scoffed. "Not a place to spend a party, if you ask me."

"Says the bird-girl. Besides, I'm perfectly happy just watching and drinking."

"And yet not a drink in sight!"

Aluwin gave Blueberry a smile. "Fetch me a drink then?"

[You've been invited to Node-0427. Do you accept?]

Never a dull moment, apparently. Aluwin just hoped that whatever this thing was, it wasn't another unwanted orgy invitation. She had enough of those already. Still, it was a party, and she wasn't here to be stuffy and boring.

"Okay," she said to herself, "I accept."

[Connection established.]

Aluwin has joined the Node!

ModHeat: Welcome to Team Heat!
ModHeat: I hope you're ready for a good time!
Aluwin: Excuse me?
ModHeat: I'm welcoming you to the Node.
ModHeat: It's a special moment, y'see.
ModHeat: Because this means that I get to help you meet some new lifelong friends and adventuring companions!
Aluwin: Adventuring companions?
Aluwin: Please don't tell me this is a sex thing.
ModHeat: Uh.
ModHeat: This is not a sex thing.
Aluwin: Okay, in that case I'm listening.
ModHeat: So, basically, this is a 'Node' — a metaphysical construct floating out in the void between worlds.
ModHeat: And we're hooking it up to a bunch of worlds so that the people inside can wield its awesome power.
Aluwin: Awesome power?
Aluwin: What sort of awesome power?
ModHeat: Uh.
ModHeat: That depends on how the draft goes.
Aluwin: A draft?
Aluwin: What sort of draft?
ModHeat: You ever play sports?
Aluwin: No.
ModHeat: Well, it's just like sports.
ModHeat: I have a list of people I can pick from, and I'm competing with somebody else to get the people I think are best for this Node.
Aluwin: Huh.
Aluwin: And this arrangement is permanent?
ModHeat: Sorta?
ModHeat: Hub-type Nodes can technically trade users and service cores around.
ModHeat: But I hope I can convince you to stay with me!
Aluwin: What's a service core?
ModHeat: It's a processor that allows the Node to exhibit special powers.
ModHeat: For example, I'm about to get one that will allow people to be recruited to the Node even if they weren't originally marked for candidacy!
ModHeat: Hello?
ModHeat: ...
ModHeat: Are you still there?
Aluwin: This is really weird.
Aluwin: So you picked me to be some part of a project where I get special powers with seemingly no downsides, and you're just chatting on like this isn't a big deal?
ModHeat: Oh, this is a huge deal.
ModHeat: But big things tend to come with lots of boring exposition that will have to be repeated for each new person who joins.
ModHeat: You'll have to go through this explanation two more times.
Aluwin: I see.
Aluwin: And from that, I suppose you mean to tell me that two more people are joining?
ModHeat: Good catch!
ModHeat: Yes, that's exactly what I mean.
Aluwin: And am I to suppose that because they're from different worlds, I'll be able to access their otherworldly powers?
ModHeat: You will!
Aluwin: Choose carefully, then.
ModHeat: I'll do my best.
ModHeat: Let's hope we get somebody good!

When Blueberry got back with her drink, Aluwin chugged it quickly.

❂

ModHeat: Okay, so I've made my choice.
ModHeat: /nodeAssign Invitation Wizard.

Service Invitation Wizard assigned to Sub-Node H.

ModMystery: Mm.
ModMystery: I should have expected as much.
ModMystery: /nodeAssign s201

User s201 assigned to Sub-Node M.

ModHeat: Alright. Now I pick user, you pick service.

❂

Node-0427H User List:
❂ Aluwin: A young dryad with the ability to speak with plants to command their growth. She can also transform into a great aspen tree.

Node-0427H Service List:
❂ Blur: Allows the Node-users to share powers and physical attributes across realities.
❂ Invitation Wizard: Allows people to be granted temporary membership to the Node.

Prompt (Closes May 8th):
This round, ModHeat is picking a Node-user! The Node-user will grant her a new ally in a distant reality. She will be working with this person closely, as will all other users in the Node.

Pick a candidate to add to the Node:
[] Elizabeth Toveluck
[] Simon White
[] Hiher Wer-Sih

I agree with
[x] Hiher Wer-Sih

mostly because I want to see how blurring dryad abilities goes with opposing a "Garden Tribe".

[X] Simon White

Mostly because he's got the best physical abilities, which are almost certainly the easiest to transfer and the most generally-applicable, leading to the most obvious synergy with Blur. Much in the same way some of us voted Invitation Wizard to shut down our rival's Summoning + Invitation Wizard synergy, they were suggesting to take Simon to shut down our Blur + Simon synergy.

[x] Hiher Wer-Sih

Dude has unspecified but probably great powers from the "Tears of the Precursors", and an excellent source of recruits. Brute physical strength is not that interesting to me as a power. I could see an argument for Simon if he has vampire hypnotism or something though.

If Simon was merely a brute, I'd agree with you... but it's not just the strength, it's the speed. Superspeed goes well with everything, especially the kind of superspeed that includes mental speed. If that's not convincing enough, note that other vampiric abilities are almost certainly also on the table, since the vampires in question have access to 'dark rituals' that increase their capabilities.

That's possible, but will he be willing to resort to dark rituals? (Will we? (Yes)) Ideally I'd like both though, so I should take a look at the other thread and see which one we're more likely to loose on the next round. (You have pushed me to approximate indifference though)

Simon was their runner-up option last round, so I'd expect Simon to be taken by them next if we don't take him. As such, if we take Hiher this round, we almost certainly get Elizabeth in the end. There's been minimal interest to either Hiher or Elizabeth on their end so far, so if we give them the choice between the two, they might go either way.

Incidentally, they seem to be going Realm Blur, out of a not-unreasonable "let's stop those guys from getting both Blur services" plan, which would give us our pick between Communion and Relic Crafting. Of the two, I'm in favour of Communion, since getting both networking services seems like pretty good synergy... even though it'd leave us a little light on up-front power.

Yeah, I'm switching my vote because I just realised the robot has psychic illusions and we need a counter for that + I think they're likely to prefer the gamer chick over Hiher because they have Summon.

[] Hiher Wer-Sih

Mostly because i want to help him.... and i just realized that i better snag the vampire, otherwise we would be getting a Vampire+Demon Bound in the other quest. I don't think linking two "corrupted" peoples will help much with their powers. It sounds like a recipe for FUN. The Dwarf Fortress kind. I don't think we want the DF kind of FUN in a quest...

Hiher will have to wait.
