Most people would be terribly insensitive if they claimed to be an attack helicopter, but you actually are one. And some guns. And power armor. And a million other things, too. Your name is the Holographically Augmented Defense and Engagement System, affectionately known in your unit as HADES. You are an artificial intelligence distributed over every piece of hardware assigned to your unit, but primarily located in a quantum computing server beneath your home base on a nice, remote island in the middle of the frozen nowheres of the Arctic Circle. It certainly saves on air conditioning and cooling systems, and heavens know your servers run hotter than your namesake.

Your operator, one Commander Harold James, is the leader of an elite squadron. This squadron is not officially named, or recorded anywhere but your memory, and serves as a kind of rapid response defense team. Your responsibility is the defense of Earth from extraterrestrial threats. The soldiers of this squadron have called themselves, in jest, XCom, Phoenix Point, the Men In Black, and a few other things. You're really quite good at this task: you and Commander James combine your respective abilities to provide an unheard of level of real time coordination and tactical advice, rivaled only by the occasional hive-minded Invaders.

[] What is your unit's most popular nickname?
[] What is your relationship with the men besides Commander Hal James?

About how often do you have to deal with actual aliens?

[] Twice a year on average: most of your attention goes to running the self-sufficient colony that is your base.
[] Monthly. You do a lot of combat work, but you also have plenty of time to spare managing the affairs of your base.
[] Weekly. Combat is practically nonstop. You actually don't mess with upkeep: you've got another AI for that. Your job is 100% managing the personnel, both on and off duty.

This looks interesting.

All About Hades
Holographically Augmented Defense and Engagement System
AKA HADES
HADES is a distributed AI hardwired into every piece of gear that {UNIT NAME} owns, from boots to bombs to the coffee machine in the mess. It is surprisingly "human", possessing likes (musicals, Commander Hal James, Stan Kubrick movies), dislikes (aliens, abject stupidity), and even a hobby! (Photoshopping crop circles onto aerial photos attached to AARs.)

{UNIT NAME}'s gear is festooned with enough sensors to make the NSA blush, because by far your greatest asset is the ability to safely accelerate the mental processes of humans with certain cerebral augmentations, like the ones possessed by Commander James. You're able to pull James into a Synaptic Net Dive, essentially bringing him into almost-frozen, real-time virtual representations of any combat zone that your troops are in.

You can also "jump in" to any equipment you're hardwired into, moving the "main" shard of your consciousness into it. This lets you instantaneously diagnose injuries, troubleshoot battle rattle, crash land a damaged aircraft, tie someone's shoes, or make the perfect mocha. You can't be meaningfully destroyed without damaging your servers, thus their remote location, but shard disruption does hurt a good bit.

Question, why meatfucker?
Culture reference because that is the best sci fi ever with the best AI ever. Also ties in to the rival outlook, the kind of warmly used pejorative that from my experience is a wonderful thing when it comes from close persons kindly. And finally because it's the kind of thing that is just interesting, I mean how did that arise specifically for us? type digs. and as Z3r0gamer suggested, a bit of grunt humor as well.

The hyphen is important. Also, it works as a nickname.

[X] Intimidated. You're too enthusiastic by half, yet too helpful to ignore.

Going with this for the name HADES plus the grin on that pic.

Referencing the new Star Wars trilogy. For shame.

I see your Call of Cthulhu!
And your X-Men.

My reading list is about a mile long and Culture isn't even on it. I watch SciFi, I play SciFi, I write some SciFi (obviously), but I don't usually read SciFi novels, because I just haven't ever enjoyed one. So if you're Meatfucker Squadron, don't expect more Culture references except by accident or audience intervention.

That's cool, Culture references tend to fail in applying proper gravitas outside of special circumstances anyway.

The Culture novels are very good, but if you don't generally enjoy science fiction novels you probably will not like them. Amazon has announced plans to turn Consider Phlebas (one of the Culture novels) into a tv series, and I hope it will.

In Culture terms, Meatfucker approximately translates to rapist. A Mind (the super-AIs are called Minds) who engages non-consensual intimate activities with organics gets called by that expletive.
Grey Area , a Culture General Contact Unit (aka standard explorer ship) is called that because it regularly practices non-consensual mindreading.
