Combinatorial Explosion (Worm/Original)

I have a strange feeling, that Vista of all people can figure her way around spatially folded access hatches herself.;)

--[X][Taylor] Emphasize the facts that he will not be truly able to get on your proverbial wavelength because of lacking the very senses necessary to understand what you are talking about, and that magic is, apparently, an innate ability of human soul and not something alien.
It IS alien though. it is not of this world, and our Soul is specifically magical.

Maybe research some other generator? Maybe create a Lighting Engine? We can use mana to call Lighting Storms.
I don't like the idea of connecting Sage to the attack Emma Barnes suffered - Sophia will be asking "Why does this endbringer-fight healer even give a shit?"
Sophia already knows Sage is Taylor. She saw the lab and fought Sage when Sage was close to Emma's house.

Depending on how nitpicky you feel like, unless I get something very wrong it's from Earth all right, just not Earth-Bet.
and our Soul is specifically magical.
We enkindle magic in a random pigeon, for crying out loud! "Protagonist is just special" argument is invalid here.
In previous chapter QA outright said how little effort she have to put for host.
Maybe research some other generator? Maybe create a Lighting Engine? We can use mana to call Lighting Storms.
I'd say, most important milestone in this direction would be ensuring compatibility between our "mana-tech" and conventional technology and ironing out an output control so any hypothetical future generator could be set up to give the right amount of Volts, Amperes and other long dead scientists.

This is a crossover with an original setting of Shade's, so I kinda doubt that.

Not my argument. Mana being infused into a soul makes it magical, that is what happened to Taylor and to Thoth. Not all souls produce mana. It isn't innate to souls.

Good point and fair enough.

So I misunderstood you, still if something as complex as soul's magical ability can be activated by something as simple as pumping some unstructured mana through it, to me it looks more like the engine was always there and just need to be kick-started.
Maybe QM can or did said anything about it?

[X][Taylor] Talk to dad. It's time to discuss important things with him
-[X][Taylor] Powers and your "Partner". He should know about what you've learned.
[X][Taylor] Hang out with Greg, instead of merely tolerating his presence.
Hanging out with Greg means that we can cultivate his loyalty overtime and turn him into a useful minion (and maybe even an apprentice once we start experimenting with awakening magic in others).
[X][Sage] Go out healing with Panacea.

-[X][Project] Magically. You'll simply try to use the letter you received as a means by which to summon its sender. While your summoning magics are crude, you've got power and time to spare. You've already summoned things from beyond this world, after all.

[x][Simple] Perform a simple experiment.
-[x][Simple] Acquire an external hard drive, the kind that's basically a very large USB stick for making backups but with a separate power cable, and power it with Brain > 'Zap' + Eldritch Relay > 'Zap' + Lightning Vision > 'Zap', then while doing that continuously plug it into a computer and download an offline copy of the entirety of wikipedia onto it so all of it passes through the mana. Lets make that thinker power ERN it's S rank.

[X][Business] Fund a venture.

-[X][Project] Kid Win: that sounds like opportunity for a small joint project to make sure that your creations is up to his specs. However, inform him stright up that we'll probably not be able to match a sustained energy output that big.
-[X][Project] Gallant: Seems easy enough we've done this plenty.

[X][Business] Establish a new way of making money using the means at your disposal
-[X][Business] Set up your building to sell goods from. Goods to Sell:
--[X][Business] Flying catfish (the cheapest kind you get from a petstore) made with Riftgecko Mutation + some minor mutations to make them breath air
--[X][Business] Fancy looking Betta fish modified with Chameleon Mutation, Ancestral Mimicry, Bioluminescence,
--[X][Business] Woodsmith Armor-based furniture grown organically in a single smooth piece
--[X][Business] Healing fruit made using Seeds of Life
--[X][Business] A small potted tree with 'Bioelectricity', mutated and with small copper bits it's made to grow around such that you can plug USB cables into it and use it to power and charge electronics
--[X][Business] Recovery gel

[X][Business] Look into acquiring the bit of forest where we did the QA summoning and the dome is legally, or somewhere as near as possible as cheaply as possible, so we can do more stuff there without risking getting in trouble if someone finds out.

[X][Sage] What will you do as Sage?
-[X][Sage] Continue your magical training.
--[X][Sage] Practice/Create a constrained form of Arcane magic with the key feature of directly or metaphorically mentioning specific mana types and attunement materials you are familiar with and using that as a focus for both willpower and symbolism to make the mana act like mana attuned to those substances and attunement chains. It's secondary but still important features are building more power and focus over the course of a long and detailed intonation, in a monotone almost chanted style dominated by rhyming couplets.

[X][Project] The hunger to experiment consumes your mind. You'll discard a project this week.

[x][Taylor] What sort of things will you do as Taylor?
-[x][Taylor] It's time for the beach episode! After all, it's not far.
--[x][Taylor] Ask Lisa if she wants to come too, her and dad being acquaintances might come in handy at some point.
--[x][Taylor] Bond with dad and relax
--[x][Taylor] Experiment more with mer-magic in its proper environment
--[x][Taylor] Test various natural marine attunements, such as gills and scales of fish, deeper and non-bucket-contaminated seawater, etc.
--[x][Taylor/Sage?] Explore the elemental realm of (sea) water.
--[x][Taylor/Sage?] Try out some solution for breathing underwater and swim deeper.

[X][Simple] Do an experiment on how long a tree that is just a sphere of wood can survive without those things and in darkness but supplied with liquid plant mana injected into it via symbiont, and how healthy it can stay that way and any issues being kept like that long term would cause. This is kind of important if we want to make much of our equipment out of living wood, and not carry around gant pots of dirt or have big leaves we have to make sure get enough sunlight.

[X][Simple] Test some things for if they count as elements using the aluminum set
-[X][Simple] Stone, as a distinct thing from Earth
-[X][Simple] Plants, in the form of trees
-[X][Simple] Machinery, in the form of the engine of some large vehicle
-[X][Simple] Air, or are you already in the plane of air by default?

[X][Simple] What happens if you try to bring back some of those odd substances from the earth plane?

[X][Simple] What happens if you take off your aluminum set while in an elemental realm? It might be tricky to find a place to *safely* test this, but it would be good to know how much to worry about the armor being damaged.

[X][Simple] Do a test and comparison between a plant and soil-dust, and a clay and air-dust mana engine, figuring out which one is more efficient, powerfull, and relative strengths and weaknesses, to better be able to choose between the two options in the future.

[X][Simple] Study a series of experiments related to the formation of solid matter from surrounding air and/or mana, first for phonemes, then for runes. These experiments and phenomena are:
-[X][Simple] Basic silicon synthesis
-[X][Simple] the 'Poof' phonem
-[X][Simple] Clay mana turning air into air-dust
-[X][Simple] pure silicon dust (say, pouring it between containers and listening to the rustling sound)
-[X][Simple] A lump of ice solidifying in a container of water
-[X][Simple] A tree growing and converting CO2 from the air into wood
-[X][Simple] Alchemy holding 'value' that includes some mass inside it, and then converting that back into a massive object.
-[X][Simple] the precipitation of magnesium carbonate in water from dissolved sodium carbonate and magnesium sulfate.

[X][Simple] Raid a spice rack and/or herb garden and/or roadside patch of weeds, and mass-test which of these plants have something other than Plant mana if you attune to the right part of them: (ooc note: I used List of plants used in herbalism to make the list, and they're in this format rather than the attunement chain table to allow more GM pickiness with most of them turning out to just have plant mana and *less* work hopefully) white willow, chamomile, garlic, ginger, gingko, saint john's wort, aloe vera, belladonna, marigold, cannabis, thistle, hawthorn, foxglove, horsetail, poppy, coca, eucalyptus, alder buckthorn, geranium, snowdrop, licorice root, witch-hazel, sea buckthorn, bay laurel, lavender, magnolia, peppermint, lotus, basil, oregano, lungwort, rosemary, elderberry, feverfew, thyme, stinging nettle, veronica, mistletoe.

[X][Simple] Study a Tesla valve for both phonems and runes. And...
-[X][Simple] In addition to passing water through it, try passing blood, raw thaum mana,
-[X][Simple] as well as Elemental Mater Language mana (in and out of water) that you then apply to paper.
-[X][Simple] To further complement this, draw a tesla valve onto a piece of paper using paper mana, then apply Elemental Mater Language mana to that paper.
-[X][Simple] Then repeat that but simultaneously studying and focusing intently on an electrical diode and a ratchet gear.
-[X][Simple] While at it I guess also study the diode and ratchet gear for phonemes and runes.
-[X][Simple] Oh and test what a rune that's just shaped like a tesla valve does.

[X][Simple] test phonemes, I count 9:: "Shha shh splash slush tsss t' Fff chsh, squelch"
[X][Simple] Try Scribe Elemental Language of Water + Fire + Earth + Air
[X][Simple] Try Scribe Elemental Language of Water + Fire + Earth + Wood + Metal
[X][Simple] Try Scribe Elemental Language of Water + Emerald - Earth (subtracted using disenchant alchemy.)

[X][Sage] You'll spend your time investigating.
-[X][Sage] Investigate the gang attack on the Barnes family last year. You now know everything that happened. Now it's time to start tracking down Shadow Stalker and find out the truth. Why did they do this to you?
-[X][Sage] Ask Gallant if he knows anything about the Sophia situation from the PRT side.

Can I vote for QM's preferance? I'll be honest, I read this as a story rather than a quest.

Who told you this lie? Hexagons.
You're bringing graphene to mind with your post...

But do submarines not use "long circles" (ovals) as doors to help distribute forces as evenly as reasonably possible, while still being a good shape for humans to walk through?

Note: I am amazingly ignorant on shape and structure, and spelling.

Hmm, we could note that while engines and washing machines and such aren't all that interesting, they do contain some new elements. There should be some oil/grease (we haven't tried oil attunements yet) in the engines, ceramics in the spark plugs, and a few slightly unusual metals all around in trace quantities, as well as some rubber and plastic (have we done much with plastic yet?). We could also see if attuning to a whole bearing/spark plug produces different results like how attuning to a whole living thing is different than attuning to a specific organ.

And because I feel like it, shape strength; Circles and arches are generally the strongest shape in their plane, particularly against compressive forces. Triangles are the strongest as far as simple polygons go; generally, the fewer sides you have, the better, as corners are stress concentration points. Hexagons pack the best, making them optimal for repeated space-filling patterns, as there are no empty spaces, and the walls don't form direct lines so there aren't contiguous weak points.
I'm not exactly an expert, but that is my general understanding.

Maybe I can clarify things:
A triangle is in fact the strongest shape in a robust way for most kinds of load, including the attack-like and damage-like ones
A circle or oval is stronger than a stare, because corners are weak points and they can approximate a vault.
A sphere can be the strongest shape in the narrow case of an even pressure, such as in gas tanks and submarines. It can also approximate a vault.
A hexagon is a weak shape, but you can fit triangles in it to reinforce it easily, and it's the most *efficient* shape.

First, a 'three day' maximum lifespan is... fascinating, because the three is the fundamental part. I don't see any viable way to test the implications, but I would hazard a guess that it would still be three days on mars, just... three martian days. The specifics would take some finicky testing and a good deal of travel to figure out.
Don't days on Earth's moon last one month? That could be a neat little hack. And it would be a slightly easier trip than Mars.

And a line is the shortest path between two points in space. So we might be able to do stuff with wires or threads to transmit magical power for distant magical projects.

Hey guys, these Wards are an opportunity for a big payday! Ask for exclusivity contract for your weaponmaking-services, since that's what they are focused on. Sage will agree to limit weapon creation to herself and the Protectorate (+Wards) in exchange for a big payday. Why? Because Sage will become a target for villains once they learn she can make long-lasting weapons which don't require a recharge from her.
This might be a test from the author, guys. Let's save Taylor from some trouble down the road by being secretive now.

Taylor currently doesn't have access to Uranium, so I'm not sure if these tests will be able to be completed. She technically can attune mana without an object, but she has tried that all of once so it will likely require a contested roll of the dice. I would recommend adding in purchasing a uranium sample as a business venture to make sure your tests get in. *cough* My large voting block already has a vote for purchasing a bunch of elements we haven't tested yet...
Since you have so many tests, I would suggest formatting them in a google sheet and copy-pasting that into your spoilers. It will likely take a solid 10 minutes to do that, but that's time the QM could use to fill out test results instead.
As for your individual tests: why did you specify pig iron (which we haven't tested before, but is presumably a weaker version of iron like coal is of graphite) rather than iron, wrought iron, cast iron, or any of the steels we have tested? Also, a reminder that transmute requires a synthesis type > non-silicate, so your heart tests would be synthesis (move the stone before heart to change them to transmutations). We should test a plain Thaum > Heart as well, since we haven't yet. I don't think your paper tests will have the results you are looking for as I suspect Thaum > non-wave type > Paper will make a colored stain. However, we have only tested skin>paper so maybe something different will happen with a non-liquid, but I still think you might have more luck using arcane rather than thaumic mana.
For the Phenom's, English words likely won't be useful on thaumic mana, see previous tests for "Fire" (which makes magic cloth-like), "Age" and "Destroy".
For the Runes, I recommend not wasting Shadestyle's time on the entire English alphabet. Testing S, U, Y, X didn't result in anything particularly useful or unexpected; I would suggest reducing the list to just a couple letters you are particularly interested in. I do like the alchemical symbols and Zodiac lists though!

Will Do.

Pigs are often associated with greed, so that was my hope with that chain.

I tend to get overzealous with this stuff, so thanks for keeping me in check, for lack of a better term.
ALso yeah, formatting properly in the future. I need to get better about that.

Don't days on Earth's moon last one month? That could be a neat little hack. And it would be a slightly easier trip than Mars.

Now that is an interesting question. I rather specifically chose Mars because it is a direct satellite of the sun. The moon orbits the earth, which means that the lunar decay rate would be potentially far more complicated. Is it a direct function of the moon's axial rotation relative to the sun? Is it instead a function of the moon's axial rotation relative to the earth? Does it care about its orbital period about either body? Does it count as just an extension of the earth? If it isn't, then you have to seriously consider that the ISS (if it still existed in the Wormverse) might have a very weird ambient mana decay rate.

Also, its very weird to consider decay rates as a function of something pertaining to a rotational cycle of a separate body. Does earth-orbit count as the earth's decay rate? What if you're moving in a parabolic arc and eventually going to crash? What if you're in the same orbital curve as the moon, just at a different direction from the Earth? What if you're in orbit around the moon? What if you're in orbit around a tinkertech grav-generator in LEO?

Ultimately, whatever the mechanics are, they're either at a similar tier of overcomplication as epicycles or we need to avoid thinking about this too much in terms of physics. I'm not sure what an appropriate alternate categorization scheme for different mana-dispersion locales would be, though.

The moon orbits the earth, which means that the lunar decay rate would be potentially far more complicated.
It's not really that complicated, the moon is tidally locked to the earth so the amount of time it takes for a full rotation and the amount of time it takes for a full orbit are the same.

Can we enchant an item to 'disrupt' time around it and use that to pop greyboy bubbles?

Can we enchant an item to 'disrupt' time around it and use that to pop greyboy bubbles?
We already have a mana type for that.
Thaum > Copper > CobaltSpeed LimitRayThis mana forces multiple timeframes to match, speeding up slowed time, and slowing hastened time.
Have to wonder if this could be combined with Ring of Protection to make areas of no temporal distortion.

[X][Business] Make use of Lisa. (Have Lisa assist in filling the orders for the wards, by simulating possible stresses and failure states on our products. things like "What happens if we shoot this part? or What if fire was applied here?" Run through the most likely use cases and stresses to make sure nothing is going to explode. Especially with the power generator wiz wants)

[X][Project] The heroes have come to you with requests. If you so choose, you can tell them to give you a week, so you can do the job properly instead of just slapping something together today. (Vista is the easiest one. Talk about diffrent possible configurations that would go well with her outfit, but note that the form change won't change the weight. The launcher might make a good ring or bracelet, so that she could point at pepole she wants to launch foam canisters at, and the same goes for the tazer. See if she can use her spatial distance warping to make regular canisters fit, or if she will need to get compressed canisters.
-
If gallant wants the healing fruit instead of a personal visit, ask more about the condition first. Is it something simple, or is there an actual problem? If its serious, we should tool the fruit to those needs by combining various mana types and mutating the resulting fruit but Wiz is the hardest. What does he plan to use this for? will it be taken into combat? Does he need it to be below a certain size or weight, or is his only concern how much power it can produce? Is price an issue? A Platnuim fueled engine would work, but sounds pricy to operate. If he doesn't want to use platnuim dust, we will need to create a bioelectric system which can produce the power and handle the strain. We ARE good at biotinkering, so it should be possible, but we still need to know what they want out of it before we can plan to make one.

Mostly fishing for things we could use to make a bioelectric generator. Personally I'm still very interested in algae for this purpose.

[X][Simple] Perform a simple experiment. (Try burning woods and plants with Black Flame mana, also try hardening wood with the flame.)
[X][Simple] Perform a simple experiment. (Make and test a few variants of bioelectric algae of both the simple floating cell varieties, and with seaweeds.)

[X][Simple] Test a substance's Mana Attunement (Defined Selenium, Sabertooth Tiger Iron, Sunstruck Citrine, Mortal Silver, Pandora's Copper, Pandora's Gold, Pandora's Iron, Vesselnite, Hopewood)

[X][Simple] Attempt to string together an Attunement Chain (Black Flame + Bioelectricty) A mutation that causes an organism to electrically fry things in a way that makes them better?

[X][Simple] Attempt to string together an Attunement Chain (Vampire Plant + Ruby Mana)
[X][Simple] Attempt to string together an Attunement Chain (Vampire Plant + Heatseeker Plant
[X][Simple] Attempt to string together an Attunement Chain (Vampire Plant + Ruby Mana + Heatseeker Plant) Mutations which make plants feed on and resist heat as though it were sunlight? Vampire plants do need blood if they go all red, which implies they lose the power to photosynthesize and replace it with some kind of blood powered means.

If we can prevent plants from burning in heat, by making them feed on it, then the heat generated by a power generator or an arc furnace should be no issue.

[X][Simple] Attempt to string together an Attunement Chain (Thaum > Rhodium > Silicon) Not directly related to anything, I just want to know if we can make colossus blood into matter.
