In the last four hours events had moved along quickly. General Confed and Admirals Greenham and Fellip had met together, and both sides had quickly hit it off. Now, a briefing was about to begin. The higest-ranking officers of all fleets were here, and quite a few of the Abbai and Hyach looked anxious.
The two admirals and the general walked into the room. Silence descended upon the room like an axe.
"Good afternoon" General Confed said, and everyone sat down in their respective places. He was pleased to see that both sets of humanity were talking to each other. He was slightly less pleased that the Hyach hadn't really spoken to the--Devenarii, was it?--since the official First Contact, but things could change
"As you are well aware, my command is not in the correct time period it should be" he announced "What you are probably not aware of, however, is that we are not in the same dimension, either"
A murmur rang around the room, as various officers started to talk to their neighbours, but a couple of shouts across the room quickly quietened them down.
"History proceeded, as far as we can tell, the same way up until the year 1908. In our history, an object smashed into Siberia, flattening the area around it for miles around. After that, we experienced a period of warfare up until the Centauri Republic encountered us.
"However, this history proceeded differently. From what we now know, a Devenarii exploration vessel managed to land successfully in London. Days later, the Devenarii and various ambassadors of the Great Powers met for the first time, and the Devenarii helped Humanity into space. The first human extrasolar colony was established at the time, in our history, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were walking on the Moon. And, by the turn of the century, the Terra-like world of Novae Devenar was discovered and colonised by both Devenarii and humans, cementing what, in 2005, was known as the Earth-Devenarii Alliance"
"This is correct" Admiral Fellip said, as the murmurs grew louder "At this time, there were murmurings from the more conservative members of the Devenarii Confederation that we shouldn't keep exploring, that we should pull back and protect our homeworld. Their argument was very convincing. Our first contact was with a Garmak exploration fleet. A week later, a single Garmak heavy cruiser, what was left of the invasion fleet that had been sent to enslave us, came out of hyperspace. Luckily for us, we managed to disable their ships quite quickly, and captured several Garmak and a working hyperspace engine. With the Garmak as translators, we were able to start our own exploration efforts with our own hyperdrives. But the conservatives always worried that the next hyperspace route would be a stable one to Garmak space, and that we would allow an invasion fleet we couldn't stop to find their way to homeworld. A destroyed exploration ship would have convinced the waverers of the conservative's cause and would have pulled us back. We certainly wouldn't have made contact with Humanity, because we'd have been hoping no-one found us"
"That must have been what happened in our dimension" General Confed agreed "and it seems certain we can't find our way back" As a gasp ran through the room, he nodded "That event was a freak of nature. There seems no way that it could happen again"
