CatOnTheWeb Plays: Fire Emblem Awakening

Introduction, Chapter 1 - Chapter 7
Location
Third planet from the star named Sol
Pronouns
He/They
A few days ago I picked up Fire Emblem Awakening and started playing it. I've gotten up to Chapter 8 and have been enjoying it a lot. I decided to record and share my thoughts for posterity.

No particular reason why or anything, just felt compelled to and as I have no big incentive not to, I will. I've only played one Fire Emblem game, and it was a partial playthrough of a ROM Hack of the first English adaptation that my friend had (I think the main character was the woman named Lyn?), so I'm aware of the Dating Sim/S-Rank mechanic.

Full disclosure, I went into this game spoiled on the Robin=Grima the Evil Dragon connection. It's pretty much impossible to avoid and I think I first learned about it in 2014. I also know that Lucina is Chrom's daughter and that she and a bunch of other party characters are kids from the future trying to stop Grima. Of the future characters I only know Lucina, Severa, and I think Morgan. I know of no one else.

I think Robin dies in the end/can die at the end, but I'm far from positive on that.

If there's anything else, no spoilers!

Last and final thing I know is, thanks to all the Pokémon/breeding simulator memes that passed my dash back in the day, that the kids' classes are based off which characters become their parents.

Premonition/Prologue:
I made a female character, went with Robin for a name. I played through the tutorial and watched the intro cutscenes, and I immediately decided to pair Robbin with Chrom as soon as she stabbed him in the stomach. Dude just said 'not your fault, please run away,' and then when Robin wakes up she just focuses on his face. Considering what I know about future plot-twists, this just makes the whole story both dramatic and melodramatic, which is my fucking jam. Let me eat that shit up, please and thank you!

I like the first group of characters, even if the dynamics are nothing special. Lissa's nice, Frederick works well as the strict mentor/guardian who probably has a scripted death half-way through the story.

The amnesia wasn't much of a surprise given the whole 'Grima' thing needs some reason to be hidden. I like how the game mechanics work to give Robin a bit of character, with her being an experience Strategist and Tactician and using the stuff to her group's advantage.

And Chrom's a cool if straightforward dude, but strikes me as a big of himbo. 'What's that, strange woman I found lying on the ground? You know my name, but not your own, and possess a whole slew of skills that really help me out on this coincidentally timed bandit raid? I immediately trust you and want you to accompany me everywhere I go.'

Chapter 1, Unwelcome Change:
We just get right into things going wrong, with an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, and giant eyes are opening in the sky to spit out super zombie warriors. Actually, now that I think about it, no one has really talked about the earthquake, eruption, or the giant eyes. They should really be talking about that stuff. Yes, the Risen and Pelgia are important but there's very overt supernatural shit going on.

I am digressing, I'll get back to this. Oh hi 'Marth.'

Sully's awesome with her crude and brash masculinity. Virion...eh. He's a suave pretty boy who comes across as a bit obnoxious. I understand these two can be more rounded via Supports, but I might just focus on Sully's.

Chapter 2, Shepherds:
Ahh, monsters on the road and more characters to meet. First off, Vaike, how the fuck did you lose your axe? Miriel found it right where you were. Stahl, you seem good, especially with your mobility. You pair up well with Sully. Don't die- oh you died because I over extended you. Welp, time to reload.

Btw, I'm Hard/Classic because that's how REAL Gamers play. I also save scum if a character I like dies, because I have no shame.

I played a bit more cautiously and got through the chapter without need to reload. By this point Robin and Chrom were becoming a bit monstrous in how they kept cutting through enemies and getting to B rank with each other.

You know, I think the bath incident went rather well. Chrom gets to be a bit himbo-y but no actual animosity comes from it because they have a calm, collected conversation and move along.

Chapter 3, Warrior Realm:
Ah, the good old 'Proud Warrior Culture,' and it's barbaric 'violence is diplomacy' stopping them at the border fort. At the very least, the game gives the fig-leaf that they're on edge due to a bunch of raids from 'Ylissean' bandits.

This was a bit tricky, as my dumb ass thought to split my forces and attack both flanks at once (I hadn't realized they would stay still with no target in range).

It took me a few reloads because I kept loosing people, but I managed to stay on one side. I like Sumia, her range, and her high speed letting her quickly get double attacks in. She's also sweet. I actually didn't interact with Kellam until the game called me out, which makes his 'no one ever notices me' shtick better. Don't like him much though, so he's going on the bench. Thanks for the javelins though.

I'll also talk a bit about some of the Supports I've gotten.

SullyxStahl: I love these two. Seriously, their relationship is so wholesome, both of them training and improving each other. Sully pull's Stahl along in her wake, refusing to let him rest, and keeps pushing her ahead, helping her stay centered.

I love Miriel's completely analytical lense to everything, from Vaike's 'musculature' to Stahl's 'repetitions.' I don't know if I'm reading too much into it, but I can't help but suspect ulterior motives with how she sees them and is just like 'I must observe more.'

Chrom and Lissa's relationship is nice. Protective but supportive older sibling and the younger sibling in the shadow of brother and sister.

Paralogue 1, Sickle to Sword:
Donnel's got Magikarp power up written all over him. Just gotta work on grinding him up. Sorry Frederick, I know you don't have any Supports with him, but you're on babysitting duty thanks to all your stat bonuses.

Otherwise, not much to say. Killer Lance is cool, and it turned Sully into a power house. I also killed one of the Thieves after he opened the chest, so I've got an extra floating in my Storage. This'll be relevant later.

Chapter 4, Two Falchions:
Hey 'Marth,' are you here purely for the Falchion foreshadowing, or did Chrom/Lissa die in this duel otl? Or do you just want to test yourself against your young Old Man?

Nothing much to say. Lon'qu looks interesting enough, but I've yet to had a reason to use him over someone else. Honestly Virion's in much the same place. Archer seems nice, but he kept dying or being useless in the restarted Chapters I tried to use him in so he's on the bench as well.

I like Regina Ferox's Khans, but I kinda wish they had more than just two. Give me a true confederation with layers of internal politics that game will be able to actual delve into, dammit!

ChromxRobin's A-Rank is just funny to me. Another accidental walk in with no hard feelings, and a promise to keep it a secret between them. Honeys, you were both screaming and shouting during those events. There's no way the rest of the army doesn't know.

Chapter 5, The Exalt and the King:
Fuck this Chapter. I had to reload so many times, and only half of them were because a character I liked died. The rest were Robin or Chrom just getting surrounded and killed by all those enemies. I put a bunch of effort into saving Ricken and Mirabelle at first, but by the end it was more incidental of just figuring out my overall tactics. In the end I had my first actual 'death' with the Boss getting Ricken right at the end before I was finished.

Story-wise I'm of mixed feelings. Gangrel is just a standard 'evil mad king leading the evil nation.' His story about wanting revenge on Chrom, Lissa, and Emmeryn's dad for the brutal holy war he led 15 years ago is interesting, but it feels a bit 'Good King-y.'

The old war ended as soon as Emmeryn took power, and the story from Chrom afterwards is a bit too focused on the people blaming her. Granted, it underlines Emmeryn's commitment to pacifism, but it also makes the common folk feel kind of villainous for…being upset over the old Exalt leading them into years of brutal war.

she's a good ruler because she wants Ylisse to be at peace and to avoid war at all costs, meanwhile Gangrel can just declare war with the most paper-thin of excuses and his people will follow him. There's some nuance because he seems to feel the need to get a casus belli, but there's no way his people don't know about the constant raids into Ylisse's territory. Maybe Plegia has internal division, between those who want revenge and those who don't, and he needs the excuse for his own base? Not sure, honestly, depends on how this develops later on.

I got Sumia and Fredrick to B Rank though, and it's sweet to see her admire the way-too-hard-of-a-worker and want to be just like him, even though she's terrible at it. I've also decided she's the one instance where the game's language censoring is diegetic. She's exactly the kind of person to say 'Horse Plop.'

Paralogue, The Secret Seller:
*winces* yikes, two Predatory Gay Berserkers in the form of Victor and Vincent. I had fun with the tactics of the battle at least? Anna's cool, and a good egg for defending that village so fiercely.

Chapter 6, Foreseer:
This was an interesting one. Validar came back from the Premonition, and there's the first hints of Robin=Grima. I did like the end cutscene where Validar was dead and talking to that evil dragon.

Story wise I'm surprised 'Marth's' gender got revealed so soon, but the foreshadowing on the time travel stuff is a lot more blatant. Sure she said just saw the future, but I'd be most players would notice her hesitance, her similarity to Chrom, and her sword being literally called 'Parallel Falchion.'

During the set-up phase I noticed the chest in Emmeryn's room so I brought my spare key along, and boy am I glad I did. Gaius died only two turns after I recruited him. I misjudged how much damage one of the Fighter's would do to him, but I didn't really feel anything at his death. Besides, I had a key to open the chest with, it was fine.

Panne's cool, like a were-viera except less sexualized (barely). Turns out she's the last of them though which is like 'ok.' Introduce a cool race of giant were-bunnies and then have them all almost dead. Sure.

Sumia really came into her own here, joining Sully, Robin, and Chrom in the ranks of 'really very valuable.' I also used my first Master Seal to make Robin a Grandmaster, god your robes are shiny. Thanks Anna, your prices are steep but they're worth it.

Also, Robin and Chrom hit S-Rank, which led to a cute confession scene. Congrats Lucina, your mom is now officially Satan!

Chapter 7, Incursion:
And I immediately grab a second Master Seal from Anna and promote Chrom. The power couple is even more powerful now.

Just in time for wyverns to come pouring down the mountain sides as the royal family tries to evacuate to the East Capital. Also for the traitor to get immediately killed without any explanation for why he turned traitor or what it means for Ylisse's internal politics.

This one got to me a bit emotionally. Emmeryn is poorly suited to leading in wartime (not that I blame her), but goddamn does she love her brother and sister and will do anything to try and keep them from living in a time of war. Cordelia's clear trauma from watching her sister-knights all die is a bit haunting as well. That's actually more characterization than side characters have been getting. So maybe she plays a bigger role later?

My only real complaint with this chapter was how sudden the Wyven Rider reinforcements were. I thought 'more behind' would just be a story reason for why Cordelia was the only new unit for this chapter. Those guys just popped up and immediately killed Lissa, Maribelle, and Cordelia. Needless to say I restarted that chapter.

Virion played a role in this one actually, and he's almost at Rank C for the bow now. Really helpful with countering the Wyvern Riders.

And that's where I am currently. Future updates will probably be more detailed as I

Here's my current stats at the moment.

Paralogue 3, A Strangled Peace

This was a fun -and frustrating- little side story. No new units popped up to aid me, not even Anna defending the village like in the last one, but it was fun and frustrating trying to save the villagers and the village. I think the problems I had with Chapter 5 really inured me to the frustrations of this one. After a few retries I just decided 'whatever, so long as one villager survives I'll call it a win.' For my trouble I got a Seraph Robe and a…Log. It's a terrible spear, definitely a joke weapon. Rank E Might 1, definitely a Joke Weapon. Wonder what I would have gotten for saving all three.

I cleared out the area around the village first -was a bit worried about the village getting destroyed. Then I had Frederick + Lissa head down the right to block off the Boss and his immediate minions, while the rest of my army, Robin, Chrom, Sully, Stahl, Donnel, Cordelia, Sumia, Panne, swung around the left side to try and save the villagers and cut off the attackers.

Still, the village itself is interesting in how it ties into the game's thematic about war and peace. The village stayed peaceful by keeping trouble-makers out. Such as helpless neighbors fleeing the Risen.

Frederick makes a comment, 'Peace only come's once the barricades are lowered.' You could see that as a comment on Emmeryn's rule. Plegia has been raiding and skirmishing Ylisse's borders for a while now, and they've had to defend against that.

A false peace, if so far it seems Plegia is just 'evil kingdom' with no more nuance to it, other than a fig leaf of seeking revenge for a holy war that waged against them.

However, the real reward from this one was the five support conversations I got out of this. Everyone I sent out on deployment for this battle got a Support Rank up. None to A-Rank, but five more bonds is nice enough I'll take it. And since I'm now typing this stuff up as I play, I can record my thoughts for each of them rather easily.

Robin x Sumia B-Rank: I'd forgotten Sumia had tried and failed to find a good book for Robin until just now. Good to know Robin did actually like the one wound up taking. And then they get to nerd out over reading books for a bit. Also, Sumia, 'Ribald Tales of the Faith War'? Such interests you have.

Chrom x Sully B-Rank: Chrom, you should know what strength training is. Sully should not have to explain to you how cleaning up heavy objects helps that, you glorious himbo of a prince.

Donnel x Stahl C-Rank: Donnel is so earnestly helpful. It's sweet.

Frederick x Lissa B-Rank: Lissa will help Frederick learn how to relax! That's nice of her.

Panne x Cordelia C-Rank: Taguel can talk to animals, cool. Also, good to see some respect forming between them. If this game did same sex romances I might start shipping them together.

I also went and took care of a Challenge that popped up over in Breakneck Pass, got a few more levels and a couple more Supports out of it.

Cordelia x Robin C-Rank: Cordelia's got a good head for memorization and management. Also seems she's a bit of a prodigy. Neat

Stahl x Miriel A-Rank: Stahl's put in the effort to get better, but because everyone sees him doing so, they feel compelled to do so as well. Damn, Stahl really is just a great soft-boy support type of person. I love him.

S: Chrom x Robin
A: Sully x Stahl, Stahl x Miriel
B: Mirel x Vaike, Frederick x Sumia, Robin x Sumia, Chrom x Sully, Frederick x Lissa,
C: Chrom x Lissa, Chrom x Sumia,
Robin x Donnel, Robin x Lissa, Robin x Stahl, Robin x Miriel, Robin x Panne, Robin x Cordelia
Sully x Frederick, Sully x Miriel, Donnel x Stahl, Panne x Cordelia.

Chapter 8, The Grimleal
Chapter 8, The Grimleal

The opening of this chapter doesn't cover much. Just Chrom and the Shepherds traveling to the Feroxian capital to get their allies and muster a full army. And just in time to learn that Gangrel captured Emmeryn and is going to hold a very public execution of her in what is obviously a trap. And it's up to Robin to come up with a plan that saves the Exalt without dooming the Shepherds.

So I went and did Paralogue 3 up above, and then went and started the Chapter proper.

The map opens on a desert that is wobbly with heat haze, and a comment that everyone will be hampered except Pegasi and Mages. I was already planning on fielding Cordelia, Sumia, and Miriel, but noted.

The map's nothing too special. Desert, oasis, villages, giant skulls and spines. You know, for once, I'd like a standard fantasy world that has those to just have a whole bunch of living giant megafauna pop up to justify that. Not just big mosnters, I mean huge monsters the size of Zorah Magdaros from Monster Hunter World.

I hit start and…I am greeted by a skimpy dressed little girl named Nowi running onto the field, followed by a thick faced man named Gregor. This comedy routine was only a little funny, but not really endearing. Also, I recognize Nowi, she's the 'looks and behaves like a little girl but is actually a 1,000 year old dragon so it's perfectly alright to have sex with her' character. I've seen memes about her. Didn't realize she was a Fire Emblem character.

Hmmm, I'm prolly gonna bench her after this but let's see her stats.

The Chapter was mostly just my units racing down the center of the map, bopping enemies as they got close and/or breaking off to get new stuff from the villages (hello Master Seal, Second Seal, you'll be of good use to my units!). So it seems that, whoever these guys are, the Plegians don't like them. The 'Grimleal'? The name makes me think it's a portmanteau of Grima and leal, Old English word for loyal. So evil dragon cultists.

So I get to the end, kill the guy. Pretty easy since I didn't need to worry too much about the enemy's turns. The movement penalty really hurt them more than it did me.

So we learn a little bit more about Nowi and Gregor. And Gregor's a mercenary with a fun accent and many angry former employers. I like him. Nowi was a being kept and sold as a slave. And yep she is indeed a thousand something. All Manakete are long lived like that, it seems…..

….

One of the future characters is tied to her, aren't they?

Got 5 more Support convos out of this one.

Chrom x Vaike C-Rank: Vaike you such a dumb idiot. It's a joy to watch you bullhead your way through issues and get Chrome to duels to you anyway despite his protests.

Stahl x Cordelia C-Rank: Stahl overhears Cordelia playing the harp, goes and compliments her like the sweet hearted himbo he is. I might be accidentally making a harem for him. Seriously, it's more happenstance that I keep pairing him with different characters.

Miriel x Donnel C-Rank: Donnel interrupts people when they are reading. He means well but dude, not cool.

Frederick x Sumia A-Rank: Frederick can be too stubborn at times. His hard working nature making him bullheaded. But hey, Sumia's a sweet.

Nowi x Gregor C-Rank: These two have some top tier 'odd ones out' energy.

I think I'm just gonna bench Nowi and ignore her. Her stats aren't anything special as much as I like dragons, it's not worth the ikk factor.

S: Chrom x Robin
A: Sully x Stahl, Stahl x Miriel, Frederick x Sumia,
B: Mirel x Vaike, Robin x Sumia, Chrom x Sully, Frederick x Lissa,
C: Chrom x Lissa, Chrom x Sumia, Chrom x Vaike
Robin x Donnel, Robin x Lissa, Robin x Stahl, Robin x Miriel, Robin x Panne, Robin x Cordelia
Sully x Frederick, Sully x Miriel, Donnel x Stahl, Panne x Cordelia, Stahl x Cordelia, Miriel x Donnel, Nowi x Gregor

Chrom: lvl 2 Great Lord
Robin: lvl 5 Grandmaster
Stahl: lvl 10 Cavalier
Sully: lvl 11 Cavalier

Chapter 9, Emmeryn
Chapter 9, Emmeryn

Before we get into it, I want to say that Anna's shop popped up twice and by selling an extra Iron Sword I got two more Master Seals. So Lissa's a Sage, Sumia's a Dark Knight, and Sully's a Paladin now. I'm saving my Second Seal for Robin or Chrom. Think I'm going to try and get them to be more powerful.

So we open on Aversa, the evil Sorceress Lady from Chapter 5, I realize I forgot to mention her, and King Gangrel being upset that they do not know if the Ylisseans have the Fire Emblem or even Chrom with them. Ah standard fantasy overlord tactics. 'You have failed me for the first and last time.'

Gangrel is still convinced Chrom will be there, and he'll make it a massacre worthy of the former Exalt.

We then cut to the Ylisseans + Feroxians. Emmeryn's execution is tomorrow, and while everyone has confidence in Robin's plan, she's nervous and worried about it. Hmmm, unspoken plan guaruntee, but this game's far from over. No idea how this's going to fall out.

And then we cut to Validar still in the shadow realm having a one sided conversation with Grima. And he's talking about how 'Destiny' will be put back on course. Then Robin wakes up from her nightmare. Ok yeah, Emm's dead. Calling it now.

And after Flavia executes the executioner via axe-throw, the battle's begun.

Pretty straightforward start, rush down the left flank, pairing up my units for speed and to keep them protected. Then swing around to the right as an enemy calls for Wyvern Rider reinforcements. Joy.

The game drew my attention to two characters. Libra, a Ylissean gnc War Monk. Chrom mistook Libra as a woman for a moment, but then corrected himself. I'm going to choose to take that as trans positivity. The other is Tharja, a depressed looking woman who wants to keep living and not die in service to the King. She actually tries to convince Chrom that she's an untrustworthy backstabber, but is won over by him going 'I'm trying to learn from my sister, and I need to watch my back anyway.'

Quick clean up after that, the Wyvern Riders were no trouble since they spawned so far away, and then the ending cutscene.

They cleared the enemy's air superiority, so Phila and the freed Pegasus Knights can swoop in to save Emmeryn. Only Aversa had a teleport spell prepared, and now there are Risen Archers filling the air with arrows. One, two, three, the Pegasus Knights go down.

And now I'm faced with a choice: give up the Fire Emblem or let Emmeryn die.

Hm…. I don't think she lives either way. That's my prediction at least, but I'm also thinking what's the best in-character decision here. What would Chrom do in this situation.

For now, I think Not Sacrificing Emmeryn is the more in character choice. Chrom wears his heart on his sleeve and loves both his sisters dearly. He wouldn't be able to just sacrifice either of them, and whatever holy power the Fire Emblem has, it's a thousand year old legend that has no bearing on the current situation.

This is a man who was furious at how his own people threw stones at Emmeryn for their anger over the war. No way he'd willingly give Gangrel the king an excuse to kill her here.

…fuck.

I was right that she was going to die, but when she saw what Chrom would do, how much he loved her and felt she was needed.

Suicide for peace. Damn that's… ow that hurts.

It ends with the Ylisseans retreating and a final note from 'Marth' exclaiming she's too late, that their dark future is written once more.

Doing Supports now feels kinda inappropriate, so I'll save them for after Chapter 10. Or after Paralogue 4. Either or.

Chrom: lvl 2 Great Lord
Robin: lvl 6 Grandmaster
Stahl: lvl 10 Cavalier
Sully: lvl 1 Paladin

Chapter 10, Renewal
Chapter 10, Renewal

This Chapter opens with Plegians cutting off the retreat, with their commander, Mustafa promising to protect them if they lay down their weapons. Looks like Emmeryn's sacrifice did reach this group at least, but no way are they trusting these guys. The victory conditions for his battle are to just defeat the Commander, but the enemy has a lot of loot so I'm going to try and kill them for their Bullion and Master Seal.

First turn goes simply, I grab a bullion of one of the thieves, and the Mustafa points out those are a separate faction from his own. Huh, neat.

So I go through a few more turns, and Mustafa starts to have defections. There Plegians who were touched by Emmeryn's sacrifice as well and don't wish to continue the war, especially not to hunt down fleeing enemies. Ok, so Gangrel did need a casus belli to smooth things over with his own people. The only reason Mustafa is doing this is because he knows, as a general, he and his family will be made into examples to cow others into obedience. But at least one defecting soldier would rather die in service to his general. Damn, the war did a number of Plegia, and having Gangrel as king has done them no favors either.

Gangrel later calls for reinforcements as my forces sweep in from the left and up and the up and left. But I manage to get to and kill him before those reinforcements arrive.

A new unit, Olivia, comes and greets us as we leave. She looks like she'll join us soon, probably.

Then, before I can do anything, the Chapter 11 immediately cuts in with us at the Feroxian throne room. I'll cover this bit so I can get to the Supports and update my party stats.

Everyone's mourning Emmeryn, and Chrom's blaming himself, saying that she made the choice for him. That he wasn't strong enough to make the right choice. Then Robin cuts in and tells him to shut up, that she'll be here to support him no matter what. And if he drags her down, well, 'that's what friends are for, right?'

Robin, honey, you're married to him.

Then we get a nice bit of all my surviving Shepherds (sorry Ricken, Sorry Gaius) vowing to continue supporting him.

Well, looks like we're off to attack Gangrel again, only this time to kill him. I haven't commented yet but I like how the barracks evolves and changes with those little side conversations for characters but also….wow Tharja's 3d model is skimpily dressed.

So now, onto Supports, and I have a bunch from the past two Chapters.

Chrom x Sumia B-Rank: She baked Chrom a Rhubarb and Fiddlehead pie that he wound up liking in spite of his hatred for Rhubarb….and then went and washed his clothes. Then he makes her tea to pay her back for the pie.

Hmm…the clothing thing strikes me as sketch, just on a gender dynamics level. Back in college me and my friends would do each other's laundry to help out, but the way the presented in the Support struck me as part of a romantic dynamic. This is because Sumia tried 15 times to get the pie right, and because the game is clearly set up to have Sumia be Chrom's 'canon' partner (I recognize her in the intro cutscene with Chrom and baby Lucina). Otherwise, nothing too bad.

Robin x Panne B-Rank: We get to learn more Taguel! Apparently Panne's group are 'rabbit-wearers', and there were other Taguel tribes that she lost contact with like 'cat-wearers' and 'bird-wearers.' You know, it's kind of sad that Panne's the last Taguel. They're pretty cool. Well, it'd be sad even if they weren't cool, but I want to learn more about them. Honestly if I wasn't already committed to Robin x Chrom I'd probably be shipping her with Panne.

Cordelia x Sumia C-Rank: Cordelia sees Sumia nervously trying to predict whether she'll die in the next battle via flower petal peeling. That's…kinda grim actually. Cordelia just uses the shear strength of her personality to get Sumia to stop. That's sweet.

Miriel x Vaike A-Rank: Vaike finally asks Miriel why she's so interested in him, given how he's duller than a sack of hammers and she's a genius researcher. She talks to him because his 'instinct' teaches her a lot of things. He lives through life easily while she has to study and research it to understand. He then asks her out on a date and she accepts. Neat.

Lissa x Libra C-Rank: I….think that was an attempt to localize the Japanese bravery-challenges. The ones where two people walk through a creepy graveyard kind of situation. At the least, was interesting to see Lissa pull the very technical Libra along behind her.

Sully x Stahl S-Rank: They finish another training bout, with Sully actually yielding for once. But there's always tomorrows bout, because neither of them are going to stop striving. Which is why Stahl wants to be more than just partners and friends. And Sully's happy to be with him until the end, until they become the next Bull and Panther.

Dorks <3.

Frederick x Sumia S-Rank: A much for straight forward pairing up than the others, but still quite endearing all the same. Frederick is in love with her and would give her the moon if he could. Sumia reciprocates and just wants him, she's so happy. Very textbook romance.

Actually wait pause a moment, all three S-Ranks so far are the guy initiating the romance? Ah well. This game is pretty heterotypical in a lot of ways, marriage proposals sticking to that shouldn't surprise me at all.

Oh I also used the Master Seal I got from the chapter to boost Stahl into a Great Knight

Paralogue 4, Anna the Merchant
Paralogue 4, Anna the Merchant

Oh hey it's the other member of those that barbarian couple from Paralogue 2, Vincent. And he seems to be blaming Anna, the town's defender, for Victor's death. I mean, you guys were bandits trying to attack a small village. The death's kinda on you. Anyway, his threat of enslavement is just met with the sweetest of threats. 'Prices aren't the only thing I can cut in half!' I like her, it's a shame she's not recruitable.

The fights go well at first, my standard group of soldiers are pretty powerful. I find out turn 3 that I was wrong about Anna not being recruitable.

She's a woman of many talents it seems. A merchant, a swordswoman, a thief LOCKSMITH! Well hey, since I lost Gaius I do need someone to open chests for me. You're going to be a very valuable member of my party, Anna.

… Wait, now I need to figure out who to bench! ;_;

Anyway, the rest of the chapter went pretty smoothly. I just missed one item (the arms scroll, which looked good) because a thief I didn't get looted it and skedaddled.

So anyway, the post chapter cutscene tells me that this is a new Anna and the one that I saw before, and that I've been buying stuff from, is actually a different person. She's saying this a Nurse Joy/Officer Jenney situation.

…. I call shenanigans.

But hey if it gets me a new party member I'll take it.

….She has two Supports. Robin and someone else I haven't found yet. Wtf is this woman? Was she added to the game last minute or something?

Speaking of Supports, let's go over the new ones I got.

Sully x Chrom A-Rank: Chrom and Sully have a nice spar, and it turns out that if this was a Harem Anime, Sully would have been The Childhood Friend. You know, the one that never wins. Like right now, since Robin is married to Chrom. But hey, at least they can always be comrades in arms!

Cordelia x Donnel C-Rank: I keep paring them up with different people, but I think I'm going to try and have this one stick. Anyway, Cordelia catches Donnel singing a song rarely known outside the Pegasus Knights. He learned it from someone who visited his village ages ago, and it's about a legendary Pegasus Knight who served the first Exalt. No name, but still impressive enough for them to arrange a date after the war, visiting her statues. Huh, bit weird that a culture hero like that wasn't even known about in Donnel's village. But if I recall his Paralogue was on an island. So maybe they only recently became a part of Ylisse.

Robin x Stahl B-Rank: I suspected that that joint gift for Chrom from the previous interaction was mostly just Stahl helping Robin, and I was right. Turns out the ingredients weren't that expensive, and Stahl's just a natural helpful, kind person. I know that bit about Japanese culture that is big on reciprocity and obligation, and Stahl's the kind of guy to make someone feel like they don't have to pay him back, that they'd already squared things. Robin, the brilliant mind that she is, saw through it and complimented him on it.

S: Chrom x Robin, Sully x Stahl, Frederick x Sumia,
A: Stahl x Miriel, Mirel x Vaike, Chrom x Sully,
B: Robin x Sumia, Frederick x Lissa, Chrom x Sumia, Robin x Panne, Robin x Stahl,
C: Chrom x Lissa, Chrom x Vaike, Lissa x Libra, Robin x Donnel, Robin x Lissa, Robin x Miriel, Robin x Cordelia, Sully x Frederick, Sully x Miriel, Donnel x Stahl, Panne x Cordelia, Stahl x Cordelia, Miriel x Donnel, Nowi x Gregor, Cordelia x Sumia, Cordelia x Donnel

Chapter 11, Mad King Gangrel
Chapter 11, Mad King Gangrel

Back into the fray of the main story. We open on Gangrel and Aversa chewing the scene as Standard Evil Villains with Standard Evil Boasting about how they'll beat Chrom's forces. but they're interrupted by a messenger telling them that soldiers are deserting en masse. He then immediately starts begging for his life and insisting he's just a messenger. Yeah… Gangrel took all the wrong lessons from Ylisse's little holy war back in the day. Then again, wars of survival are rarely kind.

We then cut to Frederick delivering the scout reports to Chrom, who's realizing this infighting and breakdown of discipline is due to Emmeryn, and how's it's been effecting Plegia. She's now a bit of a folk hero for some of the soldiers.

Hmm, I do like that Emmeryn managed to break the Plegian army's grudge against the Ylisseans, but I'm not thrilled that the Plegian resistance is mostly formless with no 'good Plegian' to represent them. Feels a bit 'the evil people were redeemed' rather than 'the evil people are just people, and don't see the protagonists as evil people either anymore.' Still, there are limits to this story thanks to its game medium, and the game clearly wants to bear out Emmeryn's belief that most people want peace, that the Plegians are no more violent or blood thirsty than the Ylisseans. So I don't mind too much.

So let's see, think I'll start putting more details into how I'm handling the battles.

First, my roster. Robin and Chrom (of course), then Donnel, Libra, Lissa, Anna, Panne, Gregor, Sumia, Cordelia, Miriel, Vaike and… eh, Stahl, I need some more mobility.

The map's got some chests, which is why I'm bringing Anna as I have neither Gaius nor any keys. Also, there're three forts over in the top right, protected by a river and two bridges. Either Gangrel's going to get reinforcements or I'm going to get some defecting Plegians coming in to support me, I think.

Anyway the battle starts, and Gangrel immediately tries to pull the 'we're not so different you and I' card. Oy vey.

No Chrom, don't agree with this asshole. Sure you're not Emmeryn, and you are a bit too quick to go to violence, but there's a world of difference between you and Gangrel.

Oh hey here's Olivia again, from the previous chapter. Wait, didn't Basilio say she could only dance? Oh wait, tutorial. 'Dancers allow a unit to act twice in a single turn.' Sure, the gameplay is already pretty abstracted out, I'll take it.

So anyway, I paired up my units with Chrom+Sumia, Robin+Anna, Miriel+Vaike, Panne+Gregor, Lissa+Libra, and Stahl+Olivia, then sent them down the right flank to pull in Gangrel's spell casters. Almost got Stahl killed due to the Sage, but Lissa/Libra was there to patch him up. And hey, Gregor got a level up and +1 to every stat except Mag out of killing that Sage. Well worth it I think.

As the Wyvern Riders came in I decided to swing around to the left, partly because I wanted to clear out the hero and his axe guys on the left, but mostly because Isaw the thief heading towards the chest over there and I didn't want one of them running off with my loot again.

Uuuunfortunately I forgot to mind where Olivia was, and as I used her early on in the previous turn, two of the spellcasters got in and killed her. I feel a bit bad, especially since I had Stahl paired with her for the explicit purpose of protection, but it's the same level of bad when Gaius died, so I'm not going to restart here.

Oh, it looks like the upper right forts are just enemy reinforcement points. Fun. And the thief managed to open the chest, which contains a Large Bullion. HEY! DON'T GO STEALING MY LOOT! I WAS GONNA STEAL THAT FIRST FAIR AND SQUARE!

The problem I face, however, is that my forces are pretty spread out at this point, and Gangrel and all his troops are pouring into the center. As I had already decided not to restart at this point, I chose discretion over greed valor and retreat to the two forts over on the right. Problem is as I clean up the mages to secure my rear, one of them gets a lucky crit on Gregor killing him. He's actually someone I regret loosing, but by keeping a more detailed live update as I write, I find myself more reluctant to restart. For now, I won't call it quits and restart, but if things go poorly enough I will try again. These are my special blorbos and I refuse to just let them die. Also I had to leave Chrom+Sumia behind from my main group because there were a whole bunch of forest tiles in their way and I had started that turn with Chrom in front. But hey at least he's tough.

So the enemy's turn comes around and Chrom shows himself to be a bit of beast, not surprising given how high I've gotten his stats. Also, the thief didn't immediately run off with the Bullion, looks like he's circling to the other chest. Nice, I can clear out some of the enemy (hopefully) and get my loot back.

I pulled most of my soldiers fully back to the forts, and paired Panne and Stahl together since they'd both just lost their partners, but I left Robin out Anna behind her to pick off a few enemies. It worked with Chrom + Sumia, should work here.

Unfortunately, again, I didn't realize how far Gangrel could move and he sniped Miriel out with the help of a Wyvern rider. Also, most of the enemy just ran right past Robin after a few of them suicided against her. At that point I decided to cut my losses and restart. My precious characters are my precious characters, dammit.

Okay, Round 2.

I'm doing the same pairings as before, but I'm going to try and just stay down on the right. Take out enough enemies so that they don't all start piling in at once like my last attempt caused, and handle them in much more manageable chunks as a result.

It goes relatively well at first, and by turn 3 I get a nice clean up on the mages and the two Wyvern riders who reach me. Also Donnel's hit level 10, so I'm probably gonna use a Master Seal on him to get him out of the Villager class -unless there's any reason to wait on that, are there skills past level 10? Actually, what's the max level in FE Awakening?

Anyway, turn 4's a bit trickier as reinforcements came in, luck was on my side though so cleaning up the remain two Wyvern Riders and the right-side reinforcements just needed a bit of careful positioning. And hey, Panne got the big boost to her stats on a level up this time.

Turn 5+6 and the Hero's group on the left have started swinging around to get at me, and the reinforcements from the topleft are trying to get to me as well. Gangrel and his guys are still safely out of range, so I decide I should be a bit more proactive and get them out of the way, because I'm nervous about what might happen if the AI decides to wake them up and I find myself buried under enemies. So long as I stay out of their threat range, I can keep it manageable and work to level my troops. I'm also keeping my troops in the woods, where they have some manner of defense.

Turn 7, and reinforcements come in form the forts around the middle of the map AGAIN (I assume this stops eventually, as I remember that happening with the reinforcement in Chapter 5. No real injuries thanks to the reinforcements, and Gangrel's group is still alseep. The thief also reached the second chest this turn, but hasn't looted it and isn't in range of the map border yet. So my loot is probably still safe there for now. More pressing is that the top left reinforcements are here so I gotta deal with them now. I get a full clean-up with none of my units in threat range, and I feel good about that.

Okay turn 8 and the thief is just ignoring the other chest. I am not safe, but I have no one to stop him from running off the map because I was focusing on the enemies about to kill my units. Also, MORE REINFORCEMENTS, this time for the north. I'm not getting my Bullion back, so I decided to just cut my losses there and pull the right side of Gangrel's troops, while also healing up some of my more injured units. I broke up Lissa and Libra so that they could cover more ground.

Funnily enough Miriel has higher Defense than Vaike thanks to the boosts he gives when behind her, so Miriel gets to be the bait since she unhurt. :p

Actually wait, I have a Dancer, I can give Sumia enough of a boost to get and kill that thief. I've been trying to level up Sumia's books but I don't want to lose my Bullion (LOOT), and I know that the Wyvern Riders are going to spawn back in from the bottom forts, so I don't want to pull to many to her. So I camp just out of range of currently spawned enemies and kill the thief with javelins.

The next few turns are positioning and poking at leading elements of Gangrel's force. I'd been careful up until now to not lose anyone on this run, but I Gangrel came in and did 22 x2 damage to Vaike. I investigate and find that his (lootable, yay!) sword does magic damage instead instead of strength. And Vaike had very low Resistance. Oh well, I'll miss the big dumb idiot, but I don't want to replay the whole chapter. Goodnight sweet prince.

Otherwise things go well, and it's just the three topleft reinforcements, only just out of range of my group, and Gangrel and a mage in immediate threat range.

My first priority is to kill Gangrel without losing anyone else, which is a bit tricky given the man's high spd, mag, and res. Sumia's a really good choice thanks to her ridiculous res and her skill with spears. And despite the axe/sword dichotomy, Libra's a good pick as well thanks to his ability to tank the counterblow. I love the powerful chorus that cuts in during the Gangrel fight animation, btw.

And so the mad king dies, bitterly proclaiming that we all die alone, and the Chrom's people do not love him.

After that it's a simple matter to clean up the reinforcements, arriving late once again, and then getting to the end of battle cutscenes.

The war is over, Plegia is surrendering, but Chrom doesn't feel satisfied. Basilio says to take it as a lesson, while Flavia is more focused on the task of counting the dead and returning home. At the very least, Plegia has full coffers so they'll be able to war reparations to both Ylisse and Ferox.

Then there comes the time after the war -sounds like a timeskip as I read this- where Ylisse rebuild and Chrom takes leadership but not the title of Exalt, so that Emmeryn can still symbolically lead the Halidom. Even still, politics demands he take a wife and produce an heir, but luckily I already have someone he S-Ranked with.

Everything's looking good, right?

'But then, two years later…' the cutscene says. Looks like that Robin = Grima thing I know about is about to become relevant. Actually wait, was Emmeryn's death all Grima and Validar needed for 'fate' to be put back on track? Because instead of dying murdered in her own home by assassins, Emmeryn martyred herself at the very capital of the Plegian Theocracy. Because of that, Plegia's morale was broken even before the war was over, and they turned on they defected in mass numbers. That's gotta be different circumstances from whatever future Lucina's from.

I'll cut this off here. The game immediately goes into Chapter 12 with no chance for me to check Supports or stats. I'll have them at the start of my Chapter 12 write up.
