PLEASE READ THE QUEST RULES BELOW

You collectively vote on the actions of Arisukawa Haruna, the first woman to serve openly in the Imperial Akitsukuni Navy.

This quest is set in a universe which is much like our own circa 1910, but with different politics, cultural norms, and ideas about gender and sexuality, as well as some unusual and advanced technology in places.

We are using this quest to explore themes like breaking the glass ceiling, divergent outlooks on gender and sexuality, colonialism and imperialism, and the place of royalty.

Content Warning
This quest goes some dark places.

There is violence, often explicit, often unfair, often against undeserving targets.

There are not always good options forward. The protagonist is not necessarily a good person.

There is implied content and discussion of sexual harassment and assault.

This is a world where people are often racist, sexist, queerphobic bigots. Sometimes, even the PC and the people they are friends with.

Voting Rules

We will tell you if write-in votes are allowed. If we do not say that write-ins are allowed, they are not. This is to prevent people from unrealistically hedging their bets.

You may proposal other options in a non-vote format, subject to approval, on non write-in votes.

We will tell you when a vote allows approved voting. If we don't say the answer is no, pick an option. We like making people commit.

Discussions makes the GM feel fuzzy.

Game Rules
When we ask you for a roll, roll 3d6. You are aiming to roll equal or under the value of your stat. If you succeed, Haruna gets through the situation with no real difficulties. If you roll above the target value, Haruna will still succeed, but this success will cost her something or add a complication.

Whenever Haruna loses something or faces hardship from a botched roll, she takes Stress. The more Stress Haruna has, the more the job and the circumstances she's in will get to her, and it'll be reflected in the narrative. Haruna must be kept under 10 Stress: if she reaches 10 Stress, she will suffer a breakdown and the results will not be great for her.

Haruna loses stress by taking time for herself, by making meaningful progress on her dreams, and by kissing tall, beautiful women.

Meta Rules
Author commentary is in italics so you know it's not story stuff.

Please don't complain about the system or the fact we have to roll dice. We've heard it before, we've heard it a thousand times across multiple quests. We're not going to change it, and it wears at our fucking souls.

Just going "oh noooo" or "Fish RNGesus Why!" is fun and fine. Complaining at length because you didn't get what you want less so.

If you have a question, tag both @open_sketchbook and @Artificial Girl. If you only tag one of us, you will be ignored. Seriously, we both write this quest.

And yes this is an alt-history type setting with openly gay and trans people, ahistoric medicine, and weird politics. Just... deal, please?

This quest employs a special system called Snippet Votes. Please read this post for more information.

I don't like the argument about activism. Exposure to the more reasonable people in the WEL is likely to temper the lesbian separatism no one else support rather than increase it. And more generally, fuck patriotism.

Edit: disregard

Exposure in the WEL currently means reading all the vitriol that gets thrown at them. As the update says :

"Aiko… I'm really worried about you. I know that this work can be really stressful. We get exposed to the public's opinion of us, which can include some really awful stuff, but it's important that you remember that this is just a small sample of what-"

"It's not just that." You muttered.

"...Of course not, I'm just worried we're making it worse." She said sagely. "How are things going right now, generally?"

In addition, we know what the stats mean. The ability to do deep introspection and reevaluation of your own beliefs is called Serenity, and rolling successful for that is currently nearly impossible.

At present, Aiko is tilted so far towards Activism that she turned a simple conversation into a tirade, ready to turn herself into a martyr for no particular reason.

Wow- jumped back in and very much agree or girl needs a break. So- direct action on that. And we really, really need to think about if the princess is good for her long term. :(

[X] Aiko decides she's bitten off more than she can chew with the flashlights. When she takes this load back, she's gonna ask if she can paint helmets or something instead. (-2 Patriotism, +2 Free Time)

I mean, it's no big surprise.

People picked the highest stress education/job option for Aiko, then the highest stress job, and the highest stress political movement.

TBH my main problem with the Serenity approach is that we still have a 60% chance to fail outright after boosting Serenity, and getting an outright failure on "reconnect to people" seems...bad.

Still, I can see the points being made re: need for introspection, so how about a compromise plan?

[X] Plan Not Quite Everything
-[X] Aiko tries to find what free time she can to do some real relaxing. Use that school library card to read some old favourites and make time for herself, so she can look at things with a more objective viewpoint. (Roll Free Time)

-[X] Aiko decides to cut back on her work with the WEL a little, requesting to leave letter sorting early to get proper sleep and reducing what other little obligations she has over the week, like distributing pamphlets. Probably cut down on awkwardness too. (-2 Activism, +2 Serenity.)

Start getting Serenity up, but don't chance rolling on it until we've managed to get it out of the negatives.

Changing vote:

[X] Plan Flashlights
-[X] Aiko makes a real effort to do some reconnecting in her life. With her brothers, with her parents, with Konomi. Properly try to be Mai's friend, instead of just her roommate. Stop holding out for Haruna to get back and make everything better. (Roll Serenity)

[ ] Aiko is contacted by one of the other members of the imperial family, curious about Hanura's girlfriend after an offhand mention from the empress.

Ooh, AikoQuest seems fun. And by 'fun', I mean 'deliciously painful'.

The local WEL chapter seems like a nice cross section of various feminist perspectives. Also, they're at least somewhat trans friendly, so that's nice. Suggests that the WEL isn't too in bed with that westernization/TERF party.

Finally properly paying off that stuff we set up ages ago about Akitsukuni being in the midst of something like second wave feminism, complete with the fragmentation along a lot of different, occasionally quite radical philosophies.

The last election had actually been a surprise for the leadership of the WEL because they hadn't expected to win any seats and now they had them.
Next election is going to be a hoot, then.
"We're working for women, not against men." Yuu said.

"What's the difference?" You almost shouted. You weren't yelling. You were just… loud.
Oh fun. This argument. Which is going to go places. Places I am going to stand way away from. Behind a blast shelter.
