Prelude: The Storm
Sophia couldn't help but shudder as she slunk away from Winslow. Away from the flashing lights of the police cars, through the pouring rain.
It was just a prank. It wasn't her fault.... Hebert was just too weak..... she had to be too weak.
Yes.
She couldn't have known that lightning from the freak storm would hit the school..... and do that to the Locker with the weak bitch inside.
Or that the roof over that part of the school would collapse.
And then catch on fire.
No way it was her fault.
And she kept telling herself that, even as she ducked into an abandoned building to change into her costume, not even noticing the minute flickers of blue lightning zooming behind her... almost as if something was following her.
I can't keep thinking about this....
She mused, taking on her shadow state and gliding up to the rooftops.
Why the hell do I even care?
S-shadow Stalker? Shadow Stalker?
Lightning flashed, and if Sophia had looked behind her, she would have seen the blurred outline of something behind her, staring at her with glowing blue eyes.
She.... She's a Hero? No..... no this can't... but I saw her.... she can't..... SHE'S A WARD!
Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, Sophia leapt over to the next building, and then the next after that, looking for something or someone to take her anger out on. And as she moved, the lightning did as well, stopping ever closer behind her each time she did.
This is all wrong. Wrong wrong wrong wrong. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS.....
It's Impossible
Sophia started at the ghostly whisper behind her, but when she saw nothing, she shrugged it off.
Lightning flashed once more, and-
"YOU BITCH!"
"W-wha?"
The nigh-on demonic voice, crackling like lightning, made her spin in a full circle, taking in all of her surroundings, but seeing nothing.
"W-who's there?"
"Me."
A hand covered in jagged metal caught her around the throat, lifting her a foot into the air as another flash of lightning cast the scene into full view, giving Shadow Stalker a good look at her assailant.
A tall, inhuman looking thing covered in makeshift metal armor.
Wait. No.
Not armor. Pieces of metal, turned black by extreme heat, torn to shreds and wrapped roughly around a human frame, save for the chest, where it seemed like the shell had been ripped apart to expose a worn black shirt, the faded blue lightning bolt just barely visible....
And the head, which was a mess.
Half-melted and burned, with what was once a pair of glasses still sitting on what was left of the nose, all peeking out from under miraculously unharmed brown hair, which itself was mostly hidden by the remains of a sweatshirt's black hood.
It was the hair and glasses that gave her away.
"H-hebert?"
Sophia choked, as eyes seemingly made of blue lightning glared into her very soul.
"YOU DID THIS! YOU DID THIS TO ME!"
And Taylor started to squeeze, only to suddenly toss her away, sending her crashing into a rusting AC unit before zooming in front of her with a trail of blue.
"You, and Emma, and Madison. You kept pushing."
She growled, grabbing Sophia by the leg and slamming her into the brick wall of the next connected building, breaking her arm with a sharp crack.
"And now.... and now... now now now now now....."
Leaving the girl to try and crawl away, Taylor clutched at her ruined face, her anger giving way to sobs as she tottered around.
It would have been comical, if not for the sudden jitters of speed, or the fact that Taylor currently looked like some kind of monster.
"And now..... YOU'RE A HERO!"
Once again, Sophia was lifted up, only now she was at the edge of the building, with both of her shoulders clamped in Taylor's literal iron grip.
"Look. Look there. Look at this city. LOOK AT IT!"
Her mask was torn off, and one of the hands grabbed the top of her head.
"With HEROES like you..... I know why things have gone to shit."
Then the hands retreated, and for a brief moment, Sophia thought that the insane cape had gone..... only to feel something press between her shoulder blades.
"Goodbye Sophia."
Taylor pushed.
Sophia screamed.
There was a horrible crunch.
Taylor let out a rasping sigh as she stumbled backwards, eventually just giving up on standing and falling to the rooftops with a clang. She looked up at the storm, and the lightning, and she smiled.
She was going to save Brockton Bay.... no matter what.

Dennis ran.
Well, no. Not really. Mostly, he walked.
At first he thought that he'd either died, or gone insane, though personally he was hoping on the second one.
Talk about humiliating to be killed by a bolt of lightning while on patrol.
He'd instinctively frozen his suit, but.... too late. Although, now it wasn't his suit that was frozen. No, it was everything else.
So he'd walked through the stilled landscape, uncaring of the black lightning trailing off of his costume, streaking it with jagged burns.
It was all.... really pretty actually. Droplets of rain hanging in the air.... a bolt of lightning frozen in the sky, halfway down to earth.
Although, he had freaked out a bit, thinking that he'd broken his power and somehow frozen everything.
Which, he realized, was actually impossible, as he was walking through the suspended raindrops, something blatantly impossible if they were stilled.
But the weirdness really started when he tried to use his power again.
Everything started moving again.
From the rain to the cars, to the people hurrying along with umbrellas or newspapers.
And when he used his power, it froze again.
His jaw dropped.
"I can freeze time? WHAT?"
And the storm continued, as Dennis continued on his way, totally absorbed in his newfound power.
-----
Thomas Calvert sat up at his desk, blinking with astonishment
Thomas Calvert sat up from the chair in his living room glass broken from the bolt of lightning that had just hit him.
He froze
He froze
They both blinked once more, and tried to figure out just what the hell had happened, and why their timelines had closed.... and why they... were thinking..... at.... the.... same.... time.
"Shit."
Then the Coil-Calvert looked down to see that his costume had changed.
Rather than a white snake on a black suit... it was a gold snake on a white suit.
"What-"
----
Around Brockton Bay, more bolts struck home.
And the storm continued.
