Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

*rolls eyes*

Yet another microtransaction-riddled half-baked alpha state game with by the numbers story checkbook made by investors chasing those non video gamers.

Hooray, CoD is relevant again? :???:

Article:
Activision says Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 set new day one and opening weekend records, making it the biggest Call of Duty three-day opening weekend ever. It also had the highest total PC players during opening weekend in franchise history. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says "unit sales on PlayStation and Steam were also up over 60 percent year-over-year."

It's like we're in the seventh generation all over again :V

Incidentally because this game comes free with your fucking Xbox etc I played it, and it's kind of wild to me that they basically blew up the release cycle and the story of the Modern Warfare reboot to give this game an extra year of development and it's still not actually finished. Like it seems finished and the enormous level of detail in many parts speaks to why this game took so long, but the final mission is a whole thing where you play as the main character defending your safehouse from an assault and as the main antagonist going through MK Ultra hallucinations with the tension being holding out long enough so you can find out where the big attack is going to be staged which you do, then the game ends in that level, the main antagonist gets rescued but you stop her a couple of minutes later in the BF3 helicopter sequence, and the big attack is just resolved off-screen.

There's some set up that seems like it's leading to a Cold War style pay-off which just ... goes nowhere. I don't think this will be that noticeable to many people because these campaigns are always so short and narratively truncated and they basically always end with an epilogue that goes 'okay now you need to play a bunch of Warzone' now, but to me it's heaving at the seams. They've pretty smoothly managed to get a COD game out every year for twenty years but this feels like an inflection point. But as BO6 is doing so well, maybe it doesn't matter.
