Hello, and Welcome to "By the Light of the Stars" A Kantai Collection fanfic that tries to do the SI Trope a bit differently. For those who are following my quest, "Reborn on the Moonless Seas," This will look familiar to you. The main character in this fic features in the quest. The worldbuilding for this fanfic built the world of the quest, though the quest takes place sometime before this fic does. Think of it as an AU of the Quest, or the Quest as an AU of this fic.

This fanfic was co-written with @Tale Swapper, though his SI will not be appearing until the 2nd chapter!

Regardless, I'd like to quickly point out that the Mature tag is here for a reason. While I will keep everything within SV's guidelines, I fully intend to go within the limits of Rule #6, which means that I can and will depict situations unsuitable for a family-friendly setting. Keep this in mind before you complain to me about it, please!

A quick link to where you can contact me quickly!
Other than that, I'm available via DMs, Discord, or SV, so feel free to reach out to me!

A Special Thanks to my Patreons: Omida, J Frost, and Adrian Tucker!

I have a Patreon, and while I don't expect any monetary support (Your support here is enough for my muse), It is always greatly appreciated!

Without Further Ado, let us begin this story...

Escape and Summoning
Dying wasn't really a comfortable feeling. I think anyone who's experienced it could tell you that. At least it was quick., No matter how unpleasant it was, while my brain caught up with the fact I was dead. And then, darkness. Just… Darkness. Then the voices started, their whispers insidious and filled with malice.

Failure

Eh? I admit I didn't accomplish much doing my life in the grand scheme of things, but I think I was somewhat a good person. I tried, which is more than most people can say.

Freak

That one… That one hurts. Especially since it refers to so much of my stress before I died. Coming out as a trans woman had cost me a lot of things, yet... I had gained so much more. Friends, especially those that weren't the fair-weather type, and a certain peace that I wouldn't have been able to achieve otherwise.

Worthless, Hopeless, Hated, Patronized, Pitied-

The chorus of voices continued to assail me, whispering various hateful things, but, at this point, I was an accomplished master of ignoring words. Stick and stones, and all that. And, before I knew it, the chorus of voices fell silent.

Serve. A singular voice called out, filled with so much malice-hate-loathing-murder-rage that I simply couldn't comprehend how someone could hate the world so much.

"No." I answered. I wouldn't, no, couldn't hate the world as much as this being did. I had lived a good life. A full life, as much as it pained me to say. I needed no second chance that would have me serving the voice filled with that much negativity. I'd had enough of that in my life.

The voice laughed, a horrifying, deep belly chuckle.

As if you had a choice in the first place-

Though horrified beyond anything else I had ever felt, I laughed. "There's always a choice. free will is a constant across religions, ideologies, and cultures. Choices are sacred."

The voice seemed to pause, as if surprised by something. Then I nearly, metaphorically shat my nonexistent pants as it focused the entire weight of its rage on me.

Take her out of my sight. She will break. Just like all the others.

Those words should have horrified me. They did, but it was blunted, as if I had won a small victory over that hateful thing. It would be the first of many small victories I would experience in this hell...

So, dying? It's got nothing on torture. Not when I'm convinced that I drew the personal ire of Satan himself. It got to the point where he had them fashion me a body to experience pain with again. Seriously, who does that?!

I… I want to say I tried to hold onto my courage from that first day. That I didn't break. But that would be a lie. I broke, though not in the way the bastard expected. My skin was still full of color, though pale, nothing like his servants. They looked vaguely familiar, being pale and sickly looking with glowing eyes, though I could no longer recall where I had seen such a thing. All of my focus, my will was spent on ensuring I would never break to the point where I served that hateful being.

With broken eyes, I stared at the… demon who oversaw my torment, lamenting the situation I had found myself in. On a happy note, my body was much better than my previous one, and I had nearly sobbed in relief when I found that out. Such happy thoughts were a distant thing of the past now.

"Still you will not serve?" She asked, "Very well, your torment begins anew. You will break, little one. The master has invested too much into your little soul for any other outcome."

I filed that little tidbit of knowledge away. It was all I could do before the agony began again, the sadistic smile on the face of my tormentor fixed in my mind. Yet, once again, I couldn't find it in myself to hate her. Hell, I pitied all of them. To be constantly hateful, it must be a sad, unfulfilling existence. Oh, that's not to say I hadn't hated them. I loathed these bitches for a long time. But my hatred had long since ran dry, and I won't let them win by making me into a mirror of them. So, I chose to pity them, to look down on them, to take the moral high ground.

The torment paused, though I had lost track of how long it had been. "Why," I rasped as I caught my breath, "Why do you serve such a hateful thing?"

The demoness's face twisted into a snarl. "Humanity is a cancer that must be purged from this world. All they are capable of is ruining everything! Constantly killing each other, constantly finding new ways to ruin the world! They'll die… Yes, they'll be destroyed!"

I laughed weakly. "So you say. But yet, as we find new ways to kill each other, we find new ways to heal. And war? War won't ever go away. It's a fundamental part of free will. Just as some choose war, some will always champion peace. We're flawed people, after all. Isn't that what makes life worth living?"

"Shut up! What would you know!?"

I simply stared at the hateful thing in pity. She wouldn't change. She had long since been consumed by her hatred of the world.

"You will regret pitying me, mortal." She promised, the loathing in her glowing eyes now personal. I giggled. As if I couldn't regret my circumstances more.

That fucking bitch proved me wrong. I wasn't sure that it was possible to feel that much agony, but now I know. She was a sadistic one, that demoness. And, for the first time since I had let go of my hatred of this place, pity was replaced by a singular desire to tear that bitch to pieces.

I hated to admit it, but my... righteous hatred and anger at that demon gave me the strength and clarity to plan an escape. I knew it was possible, after all. I'd been here long enough to witness some particularly strong souls throw a pitying look at the hateful being and escape through some kind of… portal that they had manifested themselves. Though not all strong souls seemed to manage it. One of my immediate neighbors was one such soul, and her cries of torment kept me up at night. The demons certainly seemed to enjoy torturing her, just like they enjoyed the same to me.

"Time for your next session."

Now.

With my absolute hatred of this place giving me more strength than I had any right to have, I slugged the demon across the face, grabbed her head, then smashed it against the bars of my cell repeatedly until I was absolutely sure she was dead.

It was cathartic, killing my primary tormentor. One minute she was alive, confident in her ability to finally break me… maybe she had. After all, I was dashing her head against the steel bars of my cell, something I would never have done before.

Spitting on her body, I did a quick search of it for anything useful. Upon finding her keys (stuffed between her breasts, classic), I made my escape, though not before opening the only other occupied cell and dragging the rather beautiful blonde within to her feet.

"Danke." She said, her eyes glimmering with tears. "They underestimated you, it seems."

I laughed. It was not a pleasant sound, filled with nothing but hatred of this place. "Yes. And they'll pay for that. Here, let me get your bindings."

"Danke. Abyssal bastards, those were far too tight."
I filed that tidbit of information away as well. "I've seen others escaping this place. Do you happen to know how?"

The blonde nodded. "It's not exactly an exact science, but, hopefully, someone on the surface is performing a summoning. We basically just hitch a ride on the summons, and hope to god that they have enough materials on hand to pay the cost of our summoning."

I raise my eyebrows, "and if that fails?"

"We hope that we can self summon."

"Oh joy," I remarked, eyeing the startlingly familiar girl, now that I had a chance to observe her.

'Holy shit, that's Prinz Eugen. From Kancolle. Well fuck. I guess the various information coincides. But…'

My eyes widened in absolute horror.

Invested enough in your soul… Abyssal… Oh FUCK… They were going to make me an Abyssal. Shit. I'm glad I never broke. Especially if my suspicions are true, I wouldn't have been a mook. It would have been something more, likely a Flagship, Demon, or Princess.

"Hey, what's wrong?" My companion asked, her concerned eyes filling my vision. My gaze softened. It was nice, having someone else being concerned for me.

"Nothing. Just realized how close I had been to breaking, to serving this… this…"

"Scum?"

"Yeah, that works."

Prinz smiled. "You didn't break, and that's what matters. Never seen a human infused by the Abyss with a blueprint not break, though I'm sure there are more of you."

"Ehehe. Thanks. It wasn't easy, but it got easier when that bitch decided to make it her personal mission to break me."

Prinz's smile was a beautiful thing, one that filled me with hope. "Yeah, it gets easier when you can focus your anger on one." Her brow furrowed briefly as she focused on something I couldn't parse. "Also, I found an ongoing summoning. Standby." Her face knitted into a mein of concentration, Prinz Eugen began tearing a rift in reality open, one that finally widened enough for both of us to step through. "Together. Else the rift might destabilize. Three, Two, One!"

With a cry of triumph, I stepped through the portal, Prinz at my side.

At Roughly the Same Time
Pearl Harbor
0000 Hours Local Time

"Admiral, unexpected draw on our stockpile. Something is latching on to the Summoning. At least one capital, possibly two."

The grizzled old man in charge of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam nodded at his aide, a younger woman who he had taken on as his protege when he saw her potential. Alongside him was a younger man, one of the recognized experts of summoning within the world, who was on indefinite loan from Spain.

"Keep an eye on it." He said curtly, though his eyes were smiling. More shipgirls were always a good thing, especially a capital grade ship. He had been hoping for another carrier every time they had attempted to summon. Which, at this point, was almost a daily thing.

"Aye sir." His aide replied, a smile on her face. "Hoping for a carrier?"

His grunt, along with a chuckle from the Spanish man was the aide's only answer, which had her struggling to maintain decorum. Her mentor was strict, though he truly did care for the ships under his command, as well as his men and women.

"Summoning appears to be reaching critical mass, sir." The Spaniard reported, "The lighter ships will probably start appearing shortly." It needn't be said that this meant they should brace themselves. It wasn't rare for the girls to come out… effusive. Being ready for a tackle hug paid dividends.

His words were prophetic. Moments later the Arizona Memorial lit up, the immediately recognizable portal began to glow softly in golden light, familiar motes of light rising up off the surface. The first girl to come out was immediately recognizable to the old Admiral, who gave a shout of joy as a sobbing Johnston tackled him in a hug. The destroyer had been sunk in a delaying action while Pearl was evacuated for the second time during the war, and had been gone for almost six months.

A much more subdued trio of destroyers smiled at their sister's actions, the three calmly walking towards the pier and climbing up, helped up onto land for the first time in their new lives.

The motes of light increased in intensity as Prinz Eugen stepped out of the circle, looking absolutely haggard, her clothing in pieces, screaming for them to increase the amount of materials available.

As they say, an ordnance technician at a dead run outranks everyone. By now they knew very well to respond to such things with immediate action. Questions would come later, now they needed to handle whatever fuckery was afoot.

The grizzled Admiral's shout to confirm that order only expedited that process, and more steel was brought forward, and the band playing in the background began speeding up, playing a much more intense song. Summoning wasn't a precise art, but music was its own magic, as someone had said once.

"Bauxite! She needs bauxite!" Prinz screamed, "Goddammit you! Where's that will that wouldn't let you break! Fight it off, HE DOESN'T OWN YOU!"

As the bauxite, less than the carrier needed to come out at full strength, but more than enough for her to fight off… whatever she was fighting off was consumed, a shimmering figure cloaked in shadows began to appear in the summoning circle, clearly struggling against something.

"A name!" the figure gasped out, the shadows lightening for all of a second, "I need a NAME!"

Every ship girl's eyes widened, except for Prinz, who simply threw a pleading look at the Admiral. None of them could interfere in this, only the commander of the base could make this choice.

And make a choice he did. Cloaked in an aura of light, the old admiral spoke. "I name you Suzaku. Be welcome amongst your fellows, child."

No one would remember the cloak of light. Only the one who the name was intended for would remember the name. Such an event was sacred, for those who watched the world rarely interfered in the matters of mortals, nor did they enjoy those who witnessed such an event remembering their interference.

But the results spoke for themselves. The cloak of shadowy malice fell away, revealing the form of a young woman. She, unfortunately, fell to the floor unconscious immediately. Thankfully, as was her new nature, she floated.

Prinz, of course, attempted to help the unconscious shipgirl up, only to grunt as her own injuries caused her to fall to her knees. The trio of destroyers immediately rushed to the Cruisers' side, helping the less injured girl up to the docks before returning for the armored carrier. They grunted as they carried her deadweight to shore, not even attempting to get her up onto the docks. Her rigging was still deployed, after all.

Meanwhile, the other humans blinked. They had all dazed by the interference of a higher power. The old admiral recovered first, shouting out orders.

"Get me Vestal, NOW!" He roared, as Johnston was already sprinting to help her sisters with the unconscious carrier. "What happened Prinz Eugen." He asked, his tone kind yet steely.

"I was captured by an Abyssal force while fending off a raid on a convoy entering the channel. Thankfully, my escorts got away with the convoy, so that was good. Unfortunately for my sanity, I was captured intact by the Abyss. It was not… a fun experience, though that carrier was there far longer than I was. I'm surprised she didn't break to the constant torture she was under, to be perfectly honest."

The old Admiral snarled out a list of expletives, not at all happy to hear he had a pair of torture victims on hand. "I'd like a full debrief from you when possible Prinz."

"I'll get right on it admiral. I'm just glad we escaped that horrible place." She said sagging as she slowly struggled to her feet. A firm hand pushed her down. "Admiral?"

"Rest for now, Prinz. I'll have Vestal check you over as well."

"Thank you. I'm more damaged than I thought I was." Prinz admitted, finding a more comfortable position to sit, watching as Vestal approached the unconscious carrier and began fussing over her.

"Johnston, Fletcher, Cassin Young, Kidd, help me with this stretcher please." Vestal ordered, already moving to 'operate' on the unborn carrier. "Whoever forced her into existence is going to be sorry when I get my hands on them." The repair ship growled, her engineering teams entering the other girl to get a more accurate assessment. To Vestal's surprise, they were barred from entering by the fairy crew of… Whatever the Taiho like ship was.

"Hey!" The leader of the engineers demanded.

"Desu!" The leader of what appeared to be the shipboard marines stated, "Desu!"

"What the hell do you mean you're mutinying!?" Vestal roared, startling all those around her, "Can you not see that she's barely holding onto herself as it is? Figure out your shit peacefully, or I'll have the entire base's marines in your ships' hull!"

"Desu?"

"Are you seriously telling me you haven't noticed her fading away? She isn't stable yet, damn it! Whoever grafted the echo of a G-15 onto her soul did a piss poor job, and her crew fighting is not helping!"

"Hey!"

"Desu…"

"Thank you. Now, let my engineers in, and we'll fix what's wrong with her. I promise." Vestal stated, spoken with certainty that belied her uncertainty.

"Uhmm"

"Yes Fletcher?"

"Can we move now Ms. Vestal?"

There was a pause, then the repair ship facepalmed. "Yes Fletcher, you may. Take her to the mobile repair bath I brought with me. I will be with you once I check on Prinz Eugen. Johnston, it should be just by the entrance to the pier."

"Gotcha Vestal! Fletchers, follow me~" Johnston singsonged, setting a brisk pace towards the entrance of the pier. The ambulance that had brought Vestal here would contain a mobile dock, or, as the humans called it, a repair bath. Not that that was exactly what it was. The actual composition of the fluid in the baths was… well, it wasn't just water.

"Johnston! Slow down! We're going to drop her!" Cassin Young complained, struggling to keep pace with her sister, unaware of her random tangential thoughts.

"Please do Johnston. We're not used to having bodies." Fletcher stated in support, a smile on her face. "It's good to see you again, sisters. Even if it is for a rather unfortunate reason."

Kidd and Cassin Young nodded, Johnston remaining silent for a moment before nodding. "It is, yeah. While there's a certain thrill in battle, it's not worth the cost of life war brings."

"You always were the most battle-hungry of us Johnston." Kidd teased, "I'm glad to see you mellow out a bit."

Johnston smiled bitterly, a barely restrained sob present in her voice. "Losing Hoel, Sammy B, and Heerman again will do that to you." The Fletcher stared sadly at her sisters, "I know why Heerman was so against us being gung ho now…"

"Damn. Sorry Johnston. I didn't mean to-"

"You couldn't have known Kidd. I won't hold it against you." Johnston said curtly, cutting off her sister. The wound was still somewhat fresh for her, after all.

Silence prevailed as the four sisters carried their charge to the mobile dock, and, upon reaching it, set the ship down into it, Johnston carefully stripping her charge. The solution in the water worked best when the body within was nude, which was another thing that they still hadn't figured out the reason for when she was… sunk.

Shuddering, Johnston waved of Fletcher's concerned look. "I'm fine, just some unpleasant memories. You three should go see Vestal. She likes to check up on each new girl, and she can wait to do my checkup. Need to make sure the Carrier's escorted.

"If you're sure Johnston…" Fletcher replied, still looking concerned.

Blushing at the sight of the carrier's nude form, Johnston waved her sister ships away.

"I am. Go on, get!" As her sisters left, the destroyer turned her gaze to the totally sleeping carrier who had cracked one of her eyes open. "They're gone now. You should probably stop pretending to sleep."

Of course one of them would notice. Snapping my eyes open fully, I assessed the situation I had found myself in, which, frankly, was hard as fuck to do when I was nude in front of someone I found attractive. Also, the "water" I was in wasn't helping at all. Neither were my new parts.

"Sorry. I didn't really want to interrupt your conversation. You looked like you needed to catch up with your sisters." I replied hesitantly, covering myself briefly with my arms before sighing, letting them flop to my side.

"You don't act like a newly summoned." Johnston said casually, "And I appreciate it. I needed that talk, regardless of how annoying Kidd was with her-" The Taffy cut herself off, took a deep breath, and exhaled. "Sorry. I made an oath to myself when I didn't see Heerman, Hoel, and Sammy B with me that I wouldn't continue acting as I had."

"That's admirable. Takes a lot of effort to change who you are." I stated, "God only knows-"

"You aren't new to having a body, are you?"

I snapped my jaw closed. Eyeing the destroyer warily, I nodded.

"Thought so. Prinz said something about you needing a name, and I remember nothing for a good five seconds after that. Then Vestal bitches about something grafted onto your soul."

I snarled in anger. So that was what the fucker had done to me. Seething, I glared at the wall of the ambulance, mentally plotting out the various things I would do to the Lucifer-like bastard once I got a hold of him.

Johnston, in the meantime, had stepped back, looking moments away from doing something that I'd regret inviting her into doing. So, with the will of steel that had gotten me through my ordeal, I forced those feelings into a box, shoved them down, and calmed myself. I knew I would suffer from ignoring them, but right now, I simply couldn't deal with it.

"Sorry, they were not kind about it. Hell, the reason I thought they had given me a body was so I could feel pain again since I was sorta just an incorporeal soul when they got a hold of me."

Johnston stared, though she nodded. "I can understand that. Wait, no. I don't understand, but I guess I can empathize?"

I waved her off, wincing as the action caused a flare of pain in my arm. Johnston, either uncaring or unaware of my pain nodded, "Well, back to my impromptu interrogation. You know what ship you are?"

I nodded. That was part of the reason I was unconscious. "I wasn't ever built. Only ever a blueprint. G-15 Class, more commonly known as Taihou-Kai." My crew grumbled a bit, though that was to be expected. There were, in some manner, all a portion of my soul given form. I hadn't had a crew since I was never built, so my soul was substituting by providing facsimiles of my friends, family, and various people I had met or read about in life. It was also why some of them mutinied. Because apparently, my chaotic side had to have fun.

Johnston's next question snapped me out of my internal musings.

"Do you remember the name you were given? Don't really wanna call you G-15." She replied, the snark in her voice almost palpable.

I shook my head. "Yeah, I do. My hull name is Suzaku. No idea why whoever named my hull named it after the Vermillion Phoenix, but…"

Johnston's eye narrowed briefly at my use of hull name. "You have another name?"

I nodded, not exactly happy to have to explain. "The name I had in life, Lillie." At Johnston's understanding nod, I pressed on. "I'll probably use my hull name publicly, but in private, I'd really prefer to keep going by Lillie or Yuri." I was almost pleading at this point, not really knowing who I was talking to. Myself or the ship that likely had almost no authority over me.

"Why Yuri?" Johnston asked, cocking her head to the side, in what I would consider an adorable manner.

"Lily in Japanese. I felt it would be respectful to have one since I am an IJN design."

"Ah."

We lapsed into silence as the Ambulance arrived… well, I don't fucking know. I assumed the shipgirl docks since I had probably looked like I needed repairs, though my crew assured me they couldn't actually find anything wrong with me, as did Vestal's engineers, though they were tutting at the various tech they could make better. To their surprise, my response to that was to simply laugh, surprising Johnston as she helped me out of the portable repair bath and into my clothing. I was still sore all over, after all.

"Vestal's engineers are tutting at my twenty fives," I said, grinning as I pulled my leggings up. "They're now wondering why I'm not weakly trying to defend IJN tech."

Johnston starred as well, before laughing herself. "Oh God, it's nice to meet yet another convert to the cult of Bofors. Those twenty fives are worse than the old Chicago pianos, I swear." At this, the curiously blushing destroyer passed me my underwear. I filed that thought away for later. She had probably seen it. Returning my attention to Johnston, I nodded, my eyes sparkling.

"I know! And USN planes are… well, my inner weeb cries to say this, but I'd prefer some hellcats to a zero…" The underwear went on, followed shortly by my pants and skirt.

Johnston rolled her eyes, still giggling. "Never heard an IJN girl say she doesn't like her planes, but all the ones I've met have pilots trained for them. Wait, on that note, how utterly green is your crew?" The idle question had me pause as I put on my shirt and coat-like thing. Querying my crew briefly for an answer to Johnston, I sagged visibly at the answer.

"They're so utterly green they need to go back to boot. Send me too. I have no idea how to ship." Tears dripped from my eyes in shame, shame I hadn't even been aware of till just now.

Johnston looked genuinely shocked. "Your crew is civilian?"

I nodded, wiping my face as I provided my best explanation. "Yeah, never was in the military myself. So… My soul is my crew. They're green beyond belief."

Johnston looked so utterly furious for a second that I stepped back, falling ass first back into the bath as I stepped away from her. Then it was gone, the destroyer's face utterly neutral as she pulled me up to my feet. Brushing my outfit off, she whispered soothingly,

"I'm not angry at you." She stated simply, forcing a smile onto her face, "I'm utterly furious with the Abyss. Taking a civilian and forcing her to fight…"

I nodded hesitantly. Johnston's mood swing was scary, but I could somewhat understand. She was built to protect civilians, in a roundabout way. Taking my nod for what it was, we silently finished dressing my body, the other shipgirl assisting me with putting my armored bits on. Finally, upon finishing, Johnston took my left hand in a surprisingly tender grip, then led me out of the ambulance, towards an unknown destination.

"Where are we going, Johnston?" I asked, noting that we were no longer alone. A bunch of other people on the base, human or ship, were watching us pass by. It annoyed me that some of them were whispering furiously among themselves, yet others-

"JOHNSTON!" Someone cried out, slamming into the destroyer in a tackle hug, something reminiscent of a scene that played out earlier. "You fucking idiot I missed you!" Said girl shouted, as she buried her head in Johnston's bust, crying softly.

Johnston gave her a look of fond exasperation, before patting the crying girl, turning to face me. "Suzaku, meet my 'daughter', Johnston. Jr, meet Suzaku."

"Yo!" I chirped in greeting, waving at the girl. "Nice to meet you Johnston, I'm Suzaku, as Johnston said."

The seafoam green eyes of the younger Johnston peaked out from her elder's bust. She, after taking a brief look, buried her head in Johnston's bust again. The Fletcher sighed in exasperation.

"Jr, I have to get Suzaku to the drydock. She has to have her mandatory refit."

I looked questioningly at the older Johnston, who shook her head and mouthed "later". Shaking my head bemusedly, I nodded. It was fun watching with barely concealed humor as Johnston removed Johnston from her bust, waving her off with a promise to catch up later. As soon as the Gearing disappeared from sight, running off back to the dorms, the Fletcher sighed. "Sorry, Jr is attached to me… well, the ideal of me. Anyways, as for the refit, we'd usually hold off on it, but in this case, it'll let us assess your design, and do a more complete check than what Vestal's engineers can do."

I nodded at the explanation, a thoughtful look on my face. "Makes sense."

We lapsed into silence again, the soft clack of our heeled shoes echoing silently as we left the dorms and approached the industrial section of the base. A few personnel waved at us as we passed them, a few of them stopping us briefly to chat with Johnston and a few with myself. Nothing all too memorable, just idle chatter at best. At last, almost ten minutes later we arrived at the "drydock". To my surprise, it was not quite what I was expecting, being contained in a building and looking a lot like a miniature drydock designed for a human-sized ship.

At my bewildered look, Johnston laughed. "Yeah, that was my reaction too. Apparently, it helps the refit get done faster or something. Vestal could explain the metaphysics behind it better than I could, but it basically boils down to symbolism."

I 'ah'd' in understanding. It made sense. I guess.

"Anyway," Johnston continued, "They're going to put you under when you get here, and they'll be done with the "operation" probably sometime in about sixish hours once they start. That's usually about how long these take, at least. Anyway, that's me off. I promised Jr some quality time, so I gotta run. You okay alone for a bit?"

"Yeah, I should be. Thank you, Johnston." I replied, sitting down on one of the many benches scattered around the "drydock".

"No problem. Good luck with the refit!" The fading form of the destroyer yelled as she ran out of the room.

And thus, I was alone again. It was nice, in a strange way.

Yay, you posted it! This is a great start. Watched.

This is an interesting start, I like how you have made the SI into a carrier as other authors tend to set the SI as battleships or subs.
Now like they say in XCOM "We will be watching, Commander".

As Always, A Special Thanks to my Patreons: Adrian Tucker, J Frost, Omida, and hf hfh dgs.

The only thing I can credit for keeping the voices at bay is my abysmal (hah!) sleep habits.

You see, I've never been able to sleep if there was any natural light, or even much light at all cast upon my face. I'd heard the murmurs, the demands, the ranting-

-but it was still dark. So I rolled over. And I slept.

The voices had pulled and prodded, and held me- but they'd held me in darkness, and as long as I didn't actively resist, hung limp in their grasp (pressure from all sides is actually rather pleasant) they didn't push. My dreaming mind could tell their focus was elsewhere, not on me. I wasn't quite important enough to warrant their full attention, when I seemed to be pliant otherwise.

Then came LIGHT. Someone broke through the haze surrounding this half-dream world, breaking the grip on me while waking me up fully. And as the light hit-

-I slipped from the darknesses' grasp.

Waking up in an unfamiliar place has its own issues, of course. The standard Pratchett checklist applies, as always.

Who am I? I don't quite know, though my memories are currently pretty jumbled.

Where am I? Also unknown, though I seem to be laying on sand.

Who were those people? Probably not friendly, but I'm not entirely sure.

What's this long stiff object I'm holding? If I open my eyes, I can find out.

What happened last night? I distinctly recall dying. WAIT.

My eyes fluttered open as I rolled upright, grunting as my chestplate dug into sand. I reached up, and tapped my hand against my chest, fingers resounding with the thump of flesh on steel somehow simultaneous with the clang of metal on metal. Looking down, I found myself faced with an odd mix of maid outfit and armor; steel boots, bracers, and a shaped chest plate over a shin-length back dress accented by white ruffles. A quick inspection revealed that the long object I'd been cradling was a longsword, and a tap at the top of my head found a fluffy mob-band.

"Right…" I murmured. "If this is an isekai entrance, it's not the worst. At least I'm clothed. Could have done with trousers…" I blinked, realizing my voice had shifted upward a few octaves. "Contralto. Hmm."

Coming to my feet, I absently brushed the worst of the sand off my rear (more of that than before- and it seemed a bit firmer) as I looked around. For the first time in years, my eyes found the spots where the sea met the sky, in every direction save one. "On an island with nothing but sand and sea, and there's a storm incoming. I seem to be in a different body, and my memories are telling me two different things." I paused. "...the nervous shuffling internally should concern me more, but right now, I'm just glad to have you aboard, Captain Lee."

"Hoy."

"This is a new experience for me too, captain." I frowned as I surveyed the land around me. "I don't recognize this area; it's not a port we visited on our cruise. Any of the mates have an idea?"

"Hoy."

"Splendid." I deadpanned, rolling my shoulders. Clipping my sword to the belt at my waist, I took a look around. The island I stood upon was tiny; a small, ruined concrete structure and a collapsed radio tower stood not ten meters from me (thirty feet? Ugh, my head was a mess) while my sight caught on a much larger landmass barely a mile away.

"Hoy!"

"Yes, two kilometers, right." I rubbed my head. "Apologies, captain, I'm a bit muddled at the moment." I rubbed my forehead. "I've got the memories of my service and that of an American bloke cuddled up right next to it. It's a bit concerning."

"Hoy. Hoy hoy."

"...we've got what in the mess hall?" I blinked, trotting off towards the ruined structure. "I mean, I assume the crew is happy, but of all the things we could have gotten out of having American memories- better radar, better torpedoes-"

"HOY!"

"....maybe I've been buying into the Radar Master Race stereotype, then. Sorry, captain. Regardless, why did we get an ice-cream maker, of all things?"

"Hoy."

"And better armor." I rapped my breastplate again. "We never needed it the last time around."

"Hoy hoy."

"...you know everything my other self knows?" I stooped, rooting through the ruins of the structure. "That's… interesting. So we know the enemy. And nothing else."

"Hoy."

"I doubt this is Abyssal Admiral Quest. The darkness seemed distinctly foul." I stood up, inspecting the plate off the old structure. "Sand Island Radar office." My brow furrowed. "Distinctly unhelpful." I turned back towards the larger island. "Nothing for it. Let's take a look over there."

A few minutes later saw me striding up onto cracked, melted pavement. "This looks like an airfield. Or what was left of one, perhaps." I eyed one of the devastated structures, moving a bit closer to confirm my suspicions. "I don't recall any navies I knew of using black metal as external reinforcement. Abyssal work?" I hummed. "Well, at least I'm in good company while I explore."

"Hoy."

Hours later, I finished digging through one of the island's abandoned structures, eyeing the ruins thoughtfully. "So, we're on Johnston Atoll, southwest of Hawaii. We have no surplus supplies, no idea who's in control of what, and no backup." I pursed my lips. "Bollocks. Well, if we don't know, we'll have to ask. Turn on long-range communications once we get some distance from shore, please."

"Hoy."

As I set out, I blinked, eyeing the storm on the horizon. "...what would the odds be." I muttered, before turning back to the horizon. "Almost certain. Well, we'll have to be ready to sprint once we get a direction to head in." I paused as I felt more than heard connections open within my mind.

I winced as a scratchy voice, a single male speaker layered with hundreds of different female ones, intruded into my radio room. "Yes, yes." My radio fairies informed me that- surprise surprise- the voice was coming from the approaching storm. "Listen, dears, if you could hold off while I give a call out, that'd be great."

"Not forever, no. But then, I don't need to." Opening a channel, I sent out a wide-range radio broadcast. "This is HMS Black Prince, calling out on all frequencies. I'm currently departing Johnston Atoll, seeking friendly ports held in human hands. Any port of call open for a knight in need of a court?"

"No."

"Black Prince, this is Pearl Harbor Radio Command. Confirm your codes and transmit properly, please." A male voice, this one sounding a little concerned and terse, came through the radio systems.

"Properly? I…" Inside me, one of the radio fairies started switching over to the old codes used when we'd been operating around New Zealand. "Ah, yes. Is this satisfactory?"

There was a long pause, and when the voice resumed speaking it had relaxed slightly. "Black Prince, good to hear from you. Your codes check out, if you happen to be a new summon. Please be advised, Johnston Atoll is close to enemy territory. We'll explain-"

"No need to explain, officer. There's an Abyssal storm coming along behind me, and I've already had a brush with the bastards once before. No fighting yet, though that might change soon." I peeled off the Atoll, pushing my boilers as I steamed out Northeast. "I was around post-war. The Japanese are friendly, the seas were safe, and the Commonwealth isn't anymore. Can you confirm Hawaii is in Allied hands?"

"Considering I'm standing on it, I can confirm that. I'm Lieutenant Davies, Prince. Confirm for me; you're being pursued by Abyssal forces?"

"Closer to 'being driven before', though yes." I took a second to spin, my rigging manifesting for the first time in full as I began to glimpse the unnatural threads of darkness in the rolling cloud bank behind me. "Considering the storm brewed up before I manifested, I'm assuming the Abyss was already heading this way."

"Thank you for the heads up. Any chance you can outrun them?"

"I have no idea, but I'm going to do my best. I'll give you a tinkle if it seems I'm not going to make it. Black Prince out." Pressing my boilers, I was surprised to feel them give a little more than my crew expected. "American boilers, too? Very nice, dears."

"Hoy."

"Quite right, don't redline them yet. Keep an eye out for planes and let's be about it."

"She's waking up Ms. Vestal." My vision swam, various senses now coming in far clearer than before.

"Standard disorientation from installing a different radar set." Vestal noted clinically, "And yes, Lieutenant, she appears to be coming to. Thank you once again for your assistance with the refit."

I groaned, cradling my head in my hands. Everything was swimming. Seriously.

"Not a problem Ms. Vestal. Call me again if you need assistance with a refit. You know my engineers are chomping at the bit to figure you guys out." With her piece said, the blurry figure walked out of the drydocks.

"You alright there Suzaku?" Vestal asked, her own blurry figure moving towards me. "You still look a bit woozy."

"Everything is blurry." I reported, "I don't think I have my glasses on." Upon my report, Vestal groaned. Digging through her pockets, the repair ship produced a case, which, upon being opened, contains the device I had sought.

"I am an idiot. I assumed that due to your nature as a ship, you would no longer need these. It appears I was wrong." She stated, handing me the rather fancy pair of glasses I had been summoned with.

"No problem." I replied as I put them off, sighing in relief as the dizziness and lack of vision immediately cleared up. I also could see a faint outline around Vestal, one that- Oh. That was her hull. "Is it normal to be seeing triple vision?" I ask faintly, noticing that I was seeing in the electromagnetic spectrum, the normal visual range, and could… toggle something that let me see through the eyes of my pilots, though I couldn't focus on more than one view at a time.

"... No?" Vestal stated, "Wait, are you referring to radar, normal vision, and something else?" The repair vessel had a clipboard with a stack of papers clipped to it. A pen was held tightly in her right hand. "Please describe what you are seeing Suzaku."

I nodded, struggling to actually form a cohesive thought with this… wonderful conglomeration of bullshit I was currently witnessing. "I'm seeing the outline of your hull in electromagnetic, you in normal color, and I also can choose to view stuff through my pilots."

Vestal makes a note. "So, beyond perceiving radar differently from the rest of us, no changes. I guess that would make sense…" The repair ship drifted off into muttering, while I viewed the world in pretty colors that I didn't know existed, slowly adjusting to the influx of new information. Feeling adventurous, I tried something. Metaphorically patting at something inside me that I was instinctively aware of, I twisted it, changing something.

The results were instantaneous. I stopped perceiving the electromagnetic spectrum visually, and, instead, had a toggleable radar readout in a… well, a HUD. Not that it had anything but that specific readout. I'd figure out how to- Nevermind. My captain was having an aneurysm at the very thought of me cluttering my vision like that. Twisting at it again, I sighed in satisfaction as it became a literal seventh sense, one that I could perceive, but passively.

Someone shook my shoulder, and my head whirled around, staring into the concerned eyes of the repair vessel.

"Are you okay Suzaku? You spaced out on me for a good hour."

I blanched. It had been an hour?

"Yes, it's been an hour. It is also very late. So, unless you intend to stay up any longer, I suggest you report to your dorm. Which- Of course, you don't know the layout of the base." Vestal sighed, palming her face. "I'll call a graveyard shifter to escort you to the carrier dorms."

"Thank you Vestal." I reply, "But I think I'll just wander the base for now. Unless any of the carriers on base would be willing to teach me at this hour?"

Vestal paused, having been midway through dialing a number. "I know of a few, yes. Saratoga and Enterprise are usually up at this hour. Comes with the territory of being a nighttime specialist." Muttering to herself, the repair ship erases her dialed number, and restarts. As the phone rings, Vestal muttered, "I'm putting you on speaker Suzaku, Enterprise is usually practicing at this hour, I don't really know about Sara."

I blanche. I had absolutely zero clue what kind of personality E had. "Uhhh-"

"Vestal? You're usually-" The phone chimes.
"Yes yes E, I usually am dead to the world. Unfortunately, Suzaku's refit ran long, especially when my engineers insisted on replacing everything with our stuff. Something about Suzaku wanting it."

I blinked. That was- Oh. I did indeed have Hellcats, Avengers, and Dauntlesses. Huh. And they were deck parked. And was that a late war USN radar suite?

"To be fair, our stuff was genuinely better past a certain point. Anyways, what's up Vestal? How can I help you?"

I cleared my throat. "Sorry to interrupt Miss Enterprise. I asked Vestal if any carriers would be up and able to do some basic instruction at this hour. You and Saratoga were the only ones she mentioned, and she called you first…" I twitched nervously as I finished, fidgeting.

There was a sigh at the other end of the phone. "Vestal. Go zonk out. Suzaku, I'll come pick you up in a bit. Sara's frankly better at this, but she's already got a commitment tonight. How green-"

I whimpered as Vestal interrupted Enterprise, "Beyond green E. She's basically a civilian."

There was a pause, then another sigh, this one with grumpy undertones. "Fantastic. Okay. I'll be there in a bit. Do you want something to eat Suzaku? I was on my way to the cafeteria when Vestal called."

I didn't even need to ponder on my answer, rapidly nodding as I stated an affirmative.

"Alright, I'll see you in about thirty. Don't break the place. Vestal-"

"Yes yes I know E, I'm going to retire. Goodbye." Vestal replied to her phone, clicking the connection shut with a bit more force than necessary. Turning to a gaping Suzaku, she said, "I'm going to my room now. Please don't wander off so E can find you easily." Sighing, the repair ship left the building, leaving my field of vision shortly.

Well, that just happened. I mused, resuming my pacing. Hopefully Enterprise won't be long. I'm utterly starved.

Roughly twenty nine minutes later, I was sitting on one of the benches, wolfing down on the packed lunch that Enterprise had brought with her, barely stopping to taste the food. I moaned softly as I consumed the food. Even while wolfing it down, it tasted divine, though that was probably because I hadn't eaten in forever.

"Hungry, are we?" Enterprise stated. "Food's not going anywhere, you could slow down to taste it."

Pausing briefly, I swallowed the food I had just put in my mouth, and answered, "I haven't eaten in what seems like literally forever. Gimme a break…"

"Fair enough." Enterprise stated, and we lapsed into silence as I wolfed down the rest of my food. Immediately upon noticing I was done with my food, Enterprise spoke up. "Lend me your hand quickly. I'm going to try something."

I did as Enterprise asked, twitching in surprise as I felt a metaphysical boarding plank get extended from her deck to mine. Over it walked a series of pilots, damcon officers, and various other people who knew how to run a ship.

"Uhh-" I stated, blushing. I wasn't used to holding hands with someone that wasn't family for so long, and it was taking a decent amount of time for E to transfer her crew over.

"Don't question it," Enterprise stated, misinterpreting my confusion, "Here, order some of your officers to go over to me. I'll have some of them trained over here. Probably best to send most of your flag officers over, to be honest, so Halsey can give them a good look over." She interjected, surprisingly gently. She hadn't been what I expected at all, to be honest.

"Okay." My captain, and her designated bridge crew hopped over to Enterprise, and, to my brief horror, I lost contact with them, only for my temporary Captain, one of Enterprise's, to make himself known to me, already promising to get my crew into shape.

"Right. First off, we're going to see if Admiral Kirk has any issues with me taking you and some escorts on a surprise training cruise." Enterprise stated as she let go of my hand. I nodded, briefly tempted to make a quip about the grizzled admiral's name, before I thought better of it.

"Why isn't the Admiral asleep Enterprise?" I asked, following the other carrier easily, despite the brisk pace she had set. An internal query to my temporary captain had me blinking. It was only nineteen hundred hours? "Nevermind, Vestal apparently likes an early sleep?"

Enterprise shook her head, "Nope. Us shipgirls treat sleep as a luxury. We technically don't need it. Vestal probably wanted to break out the rum, and lament how weird you are."

I blinked, something I seemed to be doing a lot of today. "Huh." I was silent for a while as we continued to Enterprise's destination. "So, training cruise, what do you have planned for it?"

"Nothing to do with carrier operations. At least until morning; considering how green your air crew is, there's no point trying to teach them night flying. We'll be going over basic seamanship, mostly. Think of it as a bootcamp, if you will." E responded. "Also, we're here."

We stepped through the doors, immediately finding the familiar form of the younger Johnston attempting to look attentive, and only just failing. She perked up immediately upon spotting us.

"Miss Enterprise! Suzaku! How are you two? What brings you to this part of the base?" The Gearing stated, smiling happily.

"Johnston. Secretary duty again?" Enterprise stated, moving over to tussle the Gearing's hair. "How was your talk with Johnston?"

The younger Johnston sighed. "She's still pretty shaken from being sunk. She's putting on a brave face, but…"

"She seemed fine when I was with her." I chimed in, smiling at the destroyer. Johnston smiled back, then frowned.

"Yeah. Anyways, what can I do for you two? Only the Admiral's still accepting unscheduled appointments. The rest of them are finishing up for the day."

"I had a question for the Admiral. Suzaku here requested that I teach her the basics, and I figured it would be a good idea to spring a surprise training cruise on some of our destroyers. That and an extra nighttime patrol out never hurts."

Johnston nodded, then pressed a button. "Admiral, Enterprise and Suzaku here to see you."

The PA buzzed. "Send them in Johnston."

The destroyer smiled at us. "Go on. My relief is late, so I probably won't be here when you leave, since she should be in by then. Think of me for the cruise E!"

"I will Johnston!" Enterprise replied, guiding me through the hallways leading to the Admiral's office.

I'd experienced how monotonous things could be even in the midst of mortal peril in the past. Accidents leading to hospital visits, reports from doctors, and workplace evaluations all caused anticipation, anxiety, and stress. But eventually one becomes bored with anxiety, and finds other things to do. So it was as I fled from the slowly gaining Abyssal storm behind me.

Familiarizing myself with my crew, and discovering the many tricks available now that I was simultaneously a single entity and a pseudo-hivemind of over 500 sailors took some time. More was spent helping my engineers figure out what exactly had happened to my boilers and armor plating (the short answer was 'they built a British ship with american resources') and reviewing my current loadout.

I also spent a bit of time performing 'quality control' on the new ice cream maker.

But alas, after all that review (and a brain freeze that left a quarter of my fairies twitching), we still had yet to even sight Hawaii. So I trunded into the tiny captain's cabin, only to find the thing clogged with dozens of reams of paper.

"...what is this?"

"Well, ma'am-" Captain Lee spoke up from one side. "-this is where we keep the ship's logs. And the important documents. Normally, it'd be just your memories, and the ship's logbook. Paperwork, and the running thereof." He paused. "Due to your… circumstances, we have a lot more here."

I picked up one of the thick documents laying nearby. "...this is one of the game ideas I had when I was fifteen." I paused. "Did every half-baked story and world the other me designed end up in this mess?"

"They did." The captain sighed. "Now, on the one hand, this is a huge issue. On the other, there's a lot of good reading material here as well." He stroked his chin. "We may need to have some space cleared for an on-board archive, or have all this digitized, if possible."

"I see-"

"Captain! Commodore!" A midshipman came up the nearby ladder, hastily waving a hand. "You're needed at the bridge."

"What's going on?"

"It's the enemy. They're hailing us."

I scrambled for the ladder, dropping down several decks then moving back up several more to reach the bridge of the vessel. Coming to a halt at the chair, I took a stand before it, snapping a look at a radioman. "Well?"

"I've had them on silent, ma'am."

"Turn them up, then. Might as well hear what they want." I commanded.

Without comment, the seaman turned a knob on his console. Seconds later, a familiar voice echoed through the room. Y̶̠͉̯͊͠ͅǪ̷̡̥̪̥̇̊̆Ṳ̵͔͈̐͌̀͜ ̶̩̊̿͗̀W̵̢̻̞̹̏̿̅I̵̮̍̿L̷͙̣̔͌͋́͝L̸̖̰̽͊̈̂ ̷̝͒̀͗͝Ļ̴̣͙̌͝I̴̧̬͉͎̔̐͂́́S̸͖̿̉T̶̗͕͛E̴̤̠͙̖̝̾̿̚N̵͖͔͙̱̋.

"Serve humanity, yes. And get a good retirement package out of the deal. Goodbye, foul thing. Next time you want to talk grandly, at least bother to lead your troops in person." I chopped my hand through the air, and the radio was abruptly silenced.

All was quiet on the bridge. I turned back towards the captain. "So… let's go get that paperwork organized. And maybe burn some of the smut I watched."

"Permission Granted." Admiral Kirk said, smirking. I gape, though Enterprise simply sighs.

"You didn't even listen to my pitch." She whines softly. "I had it all planned out too…" The good admiral simply laughs, absently working on a piece of paperwork as he does. Sighing, Enterprise turns around, "You don't mind me taking Johnston for the night right? The younger, not the older. The older one has some shit to sort out before I'm willing to let her in my fleet."

Admiral Kirk shrugs. "I trust you Enterprise. I gave you the rank you hold for a reason, after all."

Sighing in exasperation, Enterprise nods. "Yes yes. You would have preferred I not even ask you, right?"

The Admiral shakes his head. "No, though a simple radio or phone call would have been enough. No need to be so formal Rear Admiral Enterprise."

I gape at Enterprise, who simply moans in disappointment. "I still hate that you gave me so many responsibilities! Sara would have been-"

Admiral Kirk holds his hand up. "Not now Enterprise. You have a training cruise to organize. Perhaps take a few heavier ships with you as well? We have reports of a friendly shipgirl in the area, and the Abyssals are gearing up for another attempt at Pearl."

"Wait what?! Why give us permission then Sir?" I interject, wincing at Enterprise's baleful glare.

"Because I trust Enterprise and her choice of escorts to keep you safe. A baptism by fire might happen, but more likely is that the Abyssals will avoid you. They're trying, very poorly I might add, to keep their massing of troops secret. I don't think they actually understand that our satellites can see the massive change in weather they cause by existing."

I blinked, then nodded in understanding. "I apologize Sir. I should have realized-"

The Admiral waves me off. "You're a civilian Suzaku. I don't expect you to understand. Honestly, if you hadn't asked to go on a training cruise, I would have asked if you even wanted to be part of this war. I won't ask a civilian to risk her life. Even though I would have done my damndest to guilt you into it."

I nodded, butterflies roiling about in my stomach. "Thank you." I whispered, touched.

"Don't mention it. Now, I believe you two have a training cruise to organize?"

"Sir!" Enterprise belted out, saluting. I hesitantly saluted as well, hoping I had gotten it right. Judging by Enterprise's sigh and Admiral Kirk's smirk, I hadn't. I sagged in disappointment.

Nice update. Finally had time to read it.

A minor criticism though. Maybe it is me but I feel that you are making too heavy use of the Distorted text. I get what you are going for but I have to go the Zalgo text generator to read the sentences. Some lighter distortions may be better as it would be more readable.

Really? I just need to focus a little to parse out the letters and what order they're in to know what it says.

I wear glasses so it may be that. If it is a few words, I can read them but longer sentences cause me some problems. It was easier to go to the text sight and have it cleaned up there.

First Sortie
A Special Thanks to My Patreons: Adrian Tucker, J Frost, Omida, Ttw1, and Tale Swapper

It was rather amusing, in retrospect, that Enterprise gathered a small task force in such a short amount of time. Within a few minutes, Enterprise had collected an eager group of kanmusu, affectionately named Task Force 15. (something that Johnston the Younger had coined, smirking at me while she did so, the little imp) As we walked towards our designated deployment point, butterflies still dancing and performing a fucking air show in my stomach, one of my fleet mates poked me in the shoulder. Twisting my head around, I saw the smiling face of Leyte, one of the few other fleet carriers on base, and besides myself and Enterprise, the only other full fleet carrier in our Task Force.

"Nervous Suzaku?" She asked, a reassuring smile on her face. "Don't be. We'll make sure none of those Abyssal scum touch you. If we see any of them, anyway."

"Yeah!" Wright, the younger of the light carriers accompanying us stated, "Though I have to get used to using props again. Jets are so much cooler…"

"Wright," Saipan, the older of the pair stated, "Don't complain too much. It's unbecoming of a lady."

"But Saipan…" The younger whined, "I want my Panthers back…"

Enterprise's exasperated groan was shortly followed by my giggles, the teasing doing its either intended or unintended job of relaxing me. Leyte shot me a wink, and I gave her a small smile in return, hoping to convey my thanks. While Enterprise's crew had whipped my crew into basic shape, it would be a while before I was truly comfortable with… well, most things. Leyte, Saipan, and Wright had also lent some of their crew, something that I had thanked them profusely for. I was noticing some minor bleed over from them too, finding myself thinking of my aircraft in terms I hadn't known or only vaguely been aware of more often.

"Standby to deploy Task Force 15." Enterprise stated, ending my musings. "Also, before I forget Suzaku, hand again please."

I obediently grabbed Enterprise's hand, blushing softly as the carrier sent my officers back over. I still really wasn't used to physical contact, not really having been a person that engaged in much of it before.

"Lewd." Wright teased, grinning, "Handhold- Ouch! Why'd you hit me Saipan?"

"You utter buffoon. Be more sensitive." Her sister said, karate chopping her younger sister. "Besides, Miss Enterprise is just sending more crew over, and recovering her officers from earlier. Nothing lewd about that Wright."

"Quiet in the peanut gallery" Enterprise snapped, "Jeez Wright, get yourself under control. Suzaku isn't quite used to your particular brand of shenanigans yet. Keep yourself in check. I'd like to deploy at a somewhat reasonable hour, as reasonable as twenty one hundred can be at least."

"Yes Ma'am!" Wright saluted, "I'll keep myself under control Ma'am!"

Rolling her eyes, Enterprise withdrew her hand from mine. "You're good now Suzaku. First lesson, deploying your rigging. There should be a metaphysical weight present in you. Try and find that."

I nodded, my face screwed up in concentration as I stepped out onto the water, searching for- There. I pulled, guessing that that was my rigging. I was correct. Within a moment, my rigging manifested around me, oh so similar to my predecessor's.

"Well done!" Leyte clapped. Turning to face the rest of them, I smiled happily.

"Thank you!"

"Good job Suzaku," Enterprise said, smiling slightly, "Now, wait for the rest of us to deploy, and we'll be underway. I'll send you the coordinates, and have your navigator steer you in the right direction."

"Got it!" I chirped, getting used to the feeling of… well, being a ship in the ocean. I could liken it to skating, but I'd be lying. It was a mix of a metaphysical and physical feeling, one that roused a deep contentment in me. I was meant to be on the ocean, not stuck on dry land.

One by one the rest of my fleet deployed, until we were all floating in Pearl Harbor, lazily sailing in formation. Or, at least, what I thought was a formation. I was still pants at being a warship.

"Task Force 15, standby to depart Pearl Harbor-Hickam." Enterprise's voice crackled over my internal radio. I nodded resolutely to myself as Enterprise's radio operator sent the fleet coordinates, watching with thinly veiled interest as my newly returned navigator charted my course, leaving Pearl Harbor and heading towards Johnston Atoll. It was a rather sedate route, and the notes, while they alarmed me a bit, made sense. From what little I knew of our situation, the US had just recently secured their waters, and were now gunning to go on a counteroffensive. Which needed force projection.

"Course plotted ma'am." I reply, "Awaiting orders to move out."

My call echoed by others in our task force, the five carriers forming the core of the group, with our cruiser and destroyer escorts forming a screen around us. Johnston was present, along with her older incarnation. I hadn't really interacted with the rest of them much, but I was determined to at least chat with a few of them. It wouldn't do for a capital ship not to know her escorts.

"Fleet, move out!" Enterprise ordered, moving towards the mouth of the Harbor. Obediently, I followed, attempting to maintain the formation that she had ordered, my rapidly trained crew doing their best to help me along.

Whenever you see Kanmusu in pictures, they're usually fighting on rather flat surfaces. Rivers, lakes, and calm seas often seem to have little in the way of waves, and since these are the areas best suited for picture-taking, it often seems like a Kanmusu naval battle occurs on their equivalent of dry land.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Even 'calm' seas have rolls and swells as wind and currents drive the surface back and forth. And once a storm's winds rip over the water, the towering waves could crash over the deck of even the largest surface vessel.

The storm behind me hadn't churned things up that much yet where I was, as the sun rose to the East. But I was now experiencing a roller coaster as I slid up and down the crashing waves, occasionally abandoning all ship-common sense to divest myself of my rigging and plunge through a wave which might stop me, emerge, and deploy once again.

"Hoy!"

"Never you mind, captain. I'm not just a ship anymore; a bit of swimming is good for the legs, you know." I replied, taking a stand once again on the surface.

"Hoy hoy."

"Oh. Wait, radio contacts? Non-abyssal? Sounds interesting. Put them on, please."

I paused as my radio fae aimed my receivers at the odd signals. Pretty soon, I started picking up chatter.

"-you'll want to get used to bending your legs after a wave throws you. It gives you more time to right yourself when you're about to hit." The voice had command presence, along with a slight New England accent.

"Got it Enterprise. Geez, proper seamanship is just as hard as I suspected." Another voice complained, a smile audible in her voice.

"Wheeeeeeee!" This one was childlike, with a hint of teasing in it.

"WRIGHT!" The call that followed through moments later was exasperated, almost but not quite motherly. More like a big sister, perhaps?

As I listened to them talk back and forth, I smiled, a grin spreading across my face. Clicking the transmit button, I called out to what I assumed were my fellow Kanmusu. "Ah, hello? Is this a patrol from Pearl Harbor?"

"Enterprise here, you'd be correct. May I confirm who this is?" The first voice responded.

"This is His Majesty's Ship- no wait, Her Majesty's Ship Black Prince, of the Dido-class cruisers. I'm inbound from Johnston Atoll, with an Abyssal Storm at my back." I paused. "I must have done something to put them in a tizzy, as I'm fairly certain some of them were going to try to reestablish their base at Johnston. At any rate, I'm making my way towards you at full speed."

"Understood Black Prince. We're headed to Johnston Atoll ourselves, though we're going to have to scout their fleet before we do. All Carriers, recall your current scouts and launch new ones. Do you have coordinates for us Black Prince?" Enterprise responds, the soft crack of several rifles going off in the background, just barely audible.

"I do." I rattled off my navigator's coordinates, wincing as I came to a brief realization. "Please be advised, I'm not yet refitted for satellite linkup, so this is our calculated location, not actual."

The voice on the other side of the radio chuckles. "Don't worry about it. We're used to working in these conditions. We'll send an advanced cruiser group forward, look forward to meeting them. If all goes well, we'll escort you back to base, and wipe out this abyssal group while we're at it. Johnston Atoll will probably have to wait, though I'll continue my route unless ordered otherwise by Admiral Kirk."

"Advanced cruiser group? For little old me? Thank you, my lady." I chuckled over the radio.

"Don't mention it. We've got a decent sized Task Force here, so it's no skin off our backs. Besides, these waters were swept just yesterday by another patrol."

"Well, I apologize for tracking more dirt in after me. Perhaps I shouldn't have insulted that bastard on an open channel…"

"What bastard?" The Carrier Queried, curious.

"What did he sound like." Another voice growled, a low angry sound almost echoing with a hiss.

"Deep voice, male, seemed to be commanding all the black-and-white tarts hanging off my bum. Never did give his name." I replied.

The wordless scream of hatred that follows is audible over the radio, as is the frantic question that Enterprise asks unintentionally over the radio

"Suzaku, what the fuck is the issue!?"

"I'll kill that son of a fucking bitch!"
The other girl responds, "It's all his fault! ALL OF IT!"

I hesitated as the other girl (Suzaku? I didn't know that name.) started cursing on the airwaves. I sighed as she trailed off into sobs. "...I'll call back later, I think. When she's a bit more composed, let her know I'll help her; but the bastard seems to lead from the rear. If he risks his neck at all, that is."

"Appreciate it. We'll be in touch Black Prince." Enterprise responded.

"When we're not in the field, call me Edys, Enterprise." I replied.

"Understood. You and Suzaku have a lot in common it seems…" The carrier trailed off.

"Perhaps. I look forward to meeting you all." I paused as my radar picked up my first distinct contacts from behind. "I'll need to go now. I've got a small- erm, perhaps not so small, fleet of destroyers going full flank speed to try and run me down. Black Prince out."

"We can divert some bombers your way if you'd like?" Enterprise offered, "We haven't actually gotten to practicing a strike yet Suzaku? How would you like to take out your frustrations on some poor, unfortunate Abyssal Destroyers?"

"Please?"
The other carrier-girl pleaded wetly, "I would like some destructive therapy about now."

I shook my head. "They're still under storm cover. Can your pilots deal with that?"

"No, but drag them out of it, and I'll have them waiting." Suzaku replied, a rather hungry edge in her tone.

"I'll let you know. Again, Black Prince out." I signed off, moving to better angle myself towards the location of the radio messages. I sighed. "Limber the pieces and set the tables, gentlefae. We've company calling, and we need to give them our best service."

"AHOY!"

"That's quite a storm they've stirred up." I murmured, glancing at Enterprise, Leyte, Saipan, and Wright. "I don't think we'll be able to effectively do anything in that."

"Agreed. Good thing we sent Wichita ahead with a good portion of our escorts." Enterprise replied, a frown on her face. "They have to be using the base of a natural storm though. Abyssals can't stir up something that bad on their own, no matter how much they'd like us to think otherwise."

"Enterprise is right hon," Leyte interjected, "The abyssals haven't shown this kind of capability before. It's honestly kind of frightening to think how we'd contend with them if they could conjure up weather systems willy-nilly."

I nodded, tuning out Wright's quip as she replied. I had to focus on keeping my CAP operational, in case the abyssals pulled a carrier out of their collective asses.

"How are you faring in this weather Suzaku?" Saipan asked, "On that note, isn't this super eerie? We're close to a tropical storm that's dissipating fast, and yet, the waters are calm. I- I don't think I'll ever get used to Abyssal Bullshit like this."

I shuddered. I hadn't even thought of that.

"Contact!" Wichita yelled over the radio, "We've got Black Prince on radar. Hailing her on Fleet Coms now!"

The hail went out, and soon enough Prince's voice came rolling over the airwaves. "-and stay back, you bloody monsters- ah, hello there, ladies." There was the brief sound of artillery firing, and then a muttered curse. "Blasted 5 and quarter… good enough for convoy protection, my firm derriere. Ladies, if you could send someone capable of spiking Destroyer imps, that'd be grand. I've had to kill more of them with my sword then my cannon."

"We're in range Black Prince, finding a targeting solution on the Abyssal DDs. Standby. CruDiv 3, ALL GUNS FIRE!"

"I wish we could help out…" I whispered, tightening my grip on my Type 4 Arisaka. "I hate not being able to do anything…"

"Don't worry, dear, the storm's breaking up on approach. Otherwise, their carriers and battleships wouldn't be able to do anything to us." Prince's words carried through the line. "You'll have a grand old hunt soon enough."

"I look forward to it!" I replied, noting that, indeed, the storm was breaking up.

"Right, called the Admiral for reinforcements. He's sending BatDiv1 our way, since they're out patrolling with some of our CVLs. Especially since this stormfront isn't natural, he's had a few QRFs on standby. One's taking off from Hickam Field right now. We'll have Jet support and some ballsy destroyers deploying from the air." Enterprise radioed, "Looks like the Abyss wants a Decisive Battle. Let's give em a show they won't forget ladies!"

"Yeah!" The carriers chorused, a serious look crossing our faces as we began to arm our strikes, anticipating the moment the stormfront broke, and continuing to sail away from the enemy, while keeping them in range at the same time. It wouldn't do to get too close, after all.

Almost thirty minutes later, the stormfront was calm enough to finally do something.

"Suzaku, remember how to spot a strike?" Enterprise asked, "Just like we drilled earlier."

I gulped, nodding at my superior. "Suzaku, spotting a strike. Launching dauntless'." With that, I fired my Type 4 Arisaka, the metaphysical weight of my Dauntless' taking off from my deck pressing against me as I fired half of the ten round clip at a decent pace. The dauntless' began climbing, heading towards the eye of the storm, even as I began launching my contribution to our combat air patrol, keeping half an eye on my pilots as I did so.

"Wichita here, we've mopped up the Destroyers, but their vanguard is approaching. They've got a Battlecruiser with them. I'm going to take Black Prince and execute a fighting retreat."

"Understood Wichita," Enterprise responded, "Black Prince, status?"

I coughed to one side, clearing my throat of engine oil and phlegm as I swept along the waves, the fading storm nipping at my heels. "I'm hanging in there, Enterprise. So far I've only taken superficial hits to the superstructure; none of their destroyers have managed to draw a good bead at range, and they tend to bite when they get close." I dipped my sword in the water, letting the oily sheen flow off it into the surf. "I've got a longer fang than any of them, though."

"Glad to hear that Black Prince. If you'd be so kind as to follow Wichita as she withdraws, that would be grand. I don't like your chances against that Battlecruiser." Enterprise replied over comms, a hint of exasperation and amusement present in her tone.

"I could likely spike it with a torpedo or four, but beyond that I doubt anything I'd have would do the trick." I sighed. "And I'd have to close range with them to pull that off. What coordinates are you coming from, Miss Wichita?"

"You should be seeing me directly to your west on radar. Bearing 270 degrees." The cruiser responded, "Also, firing a salvo at the Battleship. I misidentified it. Blasted thing's a Fast BB. CruDiv 3, let's buy our friend some time yeah? Make ourselves a nuisance!"

"Fast BB? Turn and run, dearie. I'm heading to flank speed and catching up." I spotted the tan girl taking aim with one arm, firing a revolver one handed while the other held on her leather hat. "Potshots with an eight-inch? I don't know if that'll work."

"Only aiming to take out her superstructure Black Prince." Wichita replied, "I can do that with my Eight Inchers. Not that I'm having much luck at extreme range. Then again, neither is that BB."

"Then let us keep going." I replied. "I'd rather we get out of the squall's envelope, then we can put a bombing run on her arse." I picked up speed. "We should be able to out speed her, so let's keep a move on."

Wichita sent back an affirmation, and within moments we'd fallen into a loose formation. Running fast, I sighed with relief as we slipped out from under the storm's cover. "Almost to land. Miss Wichita, should I fall in with the fleet or keep running? I know I'm a little weak in the punch for this dance."

"Fall in with the Carrier Escorts. The rest of us heavy cruisers are gonna run some delaying action, just so they don't get too close to our flattops." Wichita replied, "See you back at Pearl, Black Prince!"

"Don't bother." A smug voice called over the radio, "Strike package is inbound. ETA: Five Minutes. Keep at it, and we can annihilate them from here."

Wichita groaned, "Damn it Enterprise, ruining my fun." Shrugging, the heavy cruiser gave me a grin. "Guess I'm tagging along with you. Hope you like fireworks, the carriers are about to put on a nice show."

I smiled back at her. "Well, all things considered I do enjoy a good explosion, and watching my enemies sink to the briny bottom is a treat. While we go, can you fill me in on what to expect at Pearl? I would rather not stick out too much."

"Sure. Waddya wanna know?" She replied, still taking pot shots at the battleship, along with the rest of her fellows. "There's a lot to cover, and I only have five minutes to do it."

"Isn't the fleet a bit further than that?" I remarked, turning away from the pursuing battleship and speeding up.

"Yeah, but Enterprise can do that over the radio. I'm a recent summon, so I don't know as much as her." The heavy cruiser clarified, "Then again, I guess recent is a relative statement."

"...actually, that raises a good point. Do you have any non-ship memories bouncing around in your noggin? From the time we were sunk?"

Wichita shook her head. "No, but Suzaku does. I guess that's why Enterprise thought you were similar."

"I see. In that case, do you need anything explained about the modern world? Porn, the internet, end of the cold war, modern American Politics?"

Wichita blinked. "Well, this is not turning out how I expected it to. Though I should be good on that. I got most of that explained to me over the month I've been back."

"Very well." I shrugged and continued weaving forward. "First question, on a scale from USSR to Great Britain, how competent is the current shipgirl command staff?"

Wichita stared at me oddly, "They're… competent? They're handling it far better than I expected, though I'm not exactly an expert on that."

Meanwhile, I heard the sound of several aircraft passing over me, looking up to see dozens of planes passing over my head. I gave them a snap salute, skidding on the water before resuming a forward advance. "That's good to hear. Second, what are the fraternization regs?"

Wichita winced, "They… are a thing. That exists. And we don't speak of them."

"And don't obey them, I assume."

Wichita nodded slowly. "To a point. Also, it really depends on which base you're at. Pearl is rather lax, from what I hear, so long as day to day operations aren't in danger."

"Alright. Third question, what's the general public perception of shipgirls? Are we weapons, people, deities, aliens? I assume we're all waifu."

Poor Wichita continued to look rather confused. "People, for the most part. Waifu? Wait, ah… yes? I think? If you mean we have people memeing on the internet about us, sure?"

"Wonderful." I murmured. "Being worshipped as a goddess sounded like too much work." Tilting my head, I listened to the beautiful, beautiful explosions behind us. "Ah, and that is time. Pleasure to speak with you, dear. Good luck, have fun, and come home safe, mmkay?"

Wichita nodded slowly. "Good luck to you as well?" She then, deciding that she was thoroughly done with this line of questioning, made her way towards the rest of her small group, conversing briefly with them before they moved back towards me. "Looks like we're sticking with you anyway. Though I'd prefer it if you didn't ask me any more questions?"

"Why? Were they that bad?" I grumbled, as Wichita shrugged. "Very well."

Almost a half hour later, I finally crested one swell and saw a large group of colorful women standing upon the waves. I grinned as I leapt off the wave towards the gathered kanmusu. "Salutations, all! I have arrived, and have brought a great multitude of guests! Please, give them all an appropriate welcome."

"They're already in retreat, Black Prince." Enterprise replied blandly, a small smirk betraying her amusement. "They really didn't like our airstrike." Nearby, the rest of the carriers, including a certain Japanese one nodded, smiling or smirking as well.

"The Battleship certainly didn't like it when Suzaku's Dauntless' nailed her Number 1 turret." Leyte giggled, "Nor did she like it when my torpedo bombers struck her in three different areas."

"Ooh! Are we bragging about what we hit now? Are we?" Wright chirped smugly, "Because I delivered the coup de grace on two separate cruisers~"

"Excuse you Wright!" Saipan interjected, pouting, "I'm quite sure that it was I that delivered the coup de grace on the abyssal cruiser that I attacked."

The pair of light carriers continued to bicker as the fleet carriers looked on in amusement, smiling. I turned, looking out at the near-clear sea behind me. "...am I allowed to ask more questions now?"

"Wichita!" Enterprise groaned, "You were supposed to answer Black Prince's questions!"

The cruiser in question grinned smugly back at the fleet carrier, before retreating a distance, more than likely taking her place in the escorting formation.

"I can talk to Black Prince Enterprise," Suzaku suggested, "I'd like to see how much we have in common."

"A Japanese Carrier and a British Cruiser are both ships, and we are both women now. Beyond that, who knows?" I posited, cruising up alongside the taller girl. I glanced up at her, around at the other ships, then back at myself. "Question; how tall are you? In feet, please; I'm used to the Imperial system."

Suzaku cocked her head to the side, "Uhmmmm I was 5"11" when I was human, and I'm pretty sure I'm shorter now. Maybe 5'8"?" She replied, smiling. She cast a quick glance to Enterprise, who simply waved her away, the fleet having turned around to head back to the homeport of Pearl Harbor.

"...damn I'm short." I murmured. "You look a full head taller than me, and you're not even clearing six feet. This will take some getting used to." I paused. "How long have you been back? Or, been here. I don't think there ever was a Suzaku carrier, was there?"

"Nope. Suzaku is the name I was given." Suzaku explained, giving Black Prince a smile "I'm a G-15 Project Carrier, one that would have succeeded Taihou."

"I see. So, how long have you been active, then?"

"Yesterday, actually." Suzaku replied, "Though I've been around for about a month as a shipgirl prior to that."

"...hospital stay?" I reasoned, thinking through why a person might have been present but inactive.

"Prisoner of War, actually." Suzaku spat bitterly, "The abyssals meant to turn me into one of their princesses."

"...hmm. Maybe that's one more point in common, then." As she gave me a wide-eyed look, I shrugged. "The abyss had me, but I didn't react to them, didn't resist. They seemed willing to let me be passive. Until their attention wavered…" I paused. "I owe you thanks, I think."

"You're welcome?" Suzaku replied, cocking her head to the side. "I guess my escape with Prinz was rather… explosive." She continued sheepishly, smiling awkwardly

I bit back my first response, then tried to think of something diplomatic to say. Finally, I defaulted back to the tried-and-true method of sidestepping the uncomfortable subject. "...I suppose you haven't had much time to settle into the modern era, then."

At this, Suzaku giggled, "Nope, I'm a reincarnate. Any questions I can answer?" She chirped, smiling, and quite clearly happy to be of use.

"Erm… okay, there's another point in common, then." I replied slowly. "...what year is it? Are we post-Trump and Boris? Or will we have to live through that again?"

Suzaku shrugged, "I wouldn't know-"

"Our commander in chief is President Biden, Suzaku," Enterprise replied, "it's currently 2021. The war has been ongoing since 2020."

Suzaku beamed at Enterprise, "Thanks E!"

"...well. Then either we've snapped back, or… wait, was COVID a thing in this dimension? Are we going to need to deal with that? Also, who's the Prime Minister? Is Queen Elizabeth still alive?" I began to rattle out. American-centralisms may have defined one of my past lives, but my life as Black Prince left me hardwired for British news.

Suzaku turned to Enterprise, who, of course, groaned. "In order, yes, the COVID pandemic did hit us, really bad timing too, but it's mostly sorted by now." Pausing to shoot a withering glare at Leyte, who was chuckling at her misfortune, Enterprise continued, "I have no idea who the British PM is, but Queen Elizabeth is most certainly alive." She finished with a note of finality.

Suzaku nodded, then froze. "I take it everyone on base is vaccinated?"

Enterprise nodded. "Since early February, yeah."

Nodding, Suzaku continued, "and what's the- never mind. Thanks captain- what do you mean it's early august?!"

"Excellent. Also, are Suzaku and I the only current reincarnates? If so, do any of them know how to sort out the double sets of memories? I spent most of the trip over trying to organize my much more expansive logbook, with middling success."

Enterprise shrugs, "From what I know? You and Suzaku are the only ones. As for memories-"

"I haven't had any issues with them, though that's probably because I'm a paper ship." Suzaku interjected, smiling. "It sucks that you have to deal with that though."

I shrugged. "Drawing upon both sets of memories is more disconcerting then painful, I suppose. On the one hand, I was a loyal ship of Her Majesty's navy; on the other, I was a young twenty-something whose greatest loyalty was to a group of nerdy friends. Walking is easy, sailing is easy, transitioning between the two is nerve-wracking. At least the upgraded boilers are nice."

"Oh?" Suzaku asked, "what do you mean by upgraded?" Nearby, the rest of the shipgirls we're listening in curiously as well.

"My boilers, armor belt, and turbines are made to American Specs, not wartime British. They're significantly more powerful, which is one of the reasons I managed to stay ahead of the fleet. Better materials, better tooling." I shrugged. "Might be my 'other' heritage shining through. Oh, and I have an ice-cream maker on-board. No idea why."

"Don't let the destroyers hear you say that." Enterprise cautioned. "Or you'll never hear the end of requests for Ice Cream."

Suzaku pouted in the meantime. "I didn't get any American stuff…" she complained, "though I guess I got most of what I wanted in my mandatory refit anyway…"

"Interesting. Maybe my past life filled out a different CYOA?"I hummed. "Whereas you paid up front for 'carrier', I only paid for 'cruiser.' Or is it a spiritual weight issue? Coming back with the weight of both a ship and human?"

Enterprise started rubbing her forehead. "Now I get why Wichita pawned you off on us. You don't ask any easy questions, do you?"

"If they were easy, I would already know the answers."

With Suzaku snickering in the background, Enterprise sighed harshly. "I suppose so. Regardless, I recommend saving your questions for the human personnel on base. They'll be able to answer your questions better anyhow."

"Aye aye ma'am." I said. "For a more shipgirl related question, do any of the local girls know how to handle a blade? I seem to have one in my kit, with only the barest notion of how to use it."

Enterprise shakes her head in a negative. "No, but several of the Japanese Girls know how to. Talk to them when they're here escorting convoys."

"I suppose they'll do for the essentials, though I'd rather an instructor who wields a straight blade." I acknowledge. "Do you know if any of the Prussian girls carry swords?"

"None that I am aware of," Enterprise replies, before sending a pleading look to Suzaku, who, with a giggle m, obliged her,

"You could just ask a Ren Faire person." She suggests, smirking at Enterprise, "They'd be able to teach you, probably."

"Maybe. Though a larper might actually be better. Sword fights at those festivals are all about flash; I'm pretty enough without having to show off. Better to stab the bitch and be on with the next job." I grumble. "Enough moaning about. Suzaku! Where'd you come from, and what're your goals?"

Suzaku blinks, before shrugging, "Survive, for goals. As for where I came from… I had a nom de plume online under the name of Miho Chan."

I blinked. Twice. "...Miho? Well, I'm rather surprised. Wish I could have met you under better circumstances." I gave a short bow as I crested a wave. "Tale Swapper, at your service."

Moments later Suzaku launches herself forwards, grabbing Black Prince in a rather tight hug. She stays there for a while, simply basking in the presence of someone familiar, before she breaks off the hug, hesitantly smiling at Black Prince. "Sorry… it's just… I thought I'd never see anyone I was familiar with again…"

"It's good to meet you too, Miho." I murmured. "However, have you had the chance to see if 'we' exist here?"

Suzaku shook her head in a negative manner. "Not yet. Haven't had access to the internet, after all."

"Really? The base doesn't have a connection, or you just haven't had the time?" I asked, a slight thrill of panic running through me. If global communications are down… well. That would be bad.

"No time. Communications seemed normal, at least." Suzaku shrugged, before turning to look at Enterprise, briefly catching the fond look on her face before she mastered herself.

"Yes Suzaku, global communications are fine." Enterprise replied, slightly exasperated.

"Well then. First things first… well, will be food. Then debriefing, likely, and possibly repairs, refits… can get rid of these fourteen inch hodgepodges, in any rate. Then sleep. And finally, once all that's done, I'm going to sit down, check out the web, and see if John Oliver is still posting." I bit back a slew of additional questions regarding shipgirl political clout. Enterprise was already stressed, no need to insinuate I was going to use my new status to force societal change… no matter how cute making her red would be.

Oh shit, I nearly missed the update! Well that's what I get for not catching up on my SV account for nearly a month

"Bad news ladies, we don't get to go home quite yet." Enterprise called over fleet coms as we executed a turn to face into the wind, "Highcom wants that Abyssal Princess engaged until the Battleships catch up with us, and they're at least eight hours out."

I winced, sharing a glance with Black Prince as the cruiser sighed in disappointment. "I suppose I'll have to get used to shifting priorities." She grumbled, then straightened. "Very well, ma'am."

"Understood Enterprise," I replied, "Standard strike package?" I asked, idly checking on the status of my aircraft.

"Standard strike." Enterprise echoed, followed by Leyte, Saipan, and Wright.

Turning to Black Prince, I sent a small smile her way. "It'll take us a bit to rearm our aircraft, so relax for now. I can chat about anything if you'd like."

She nodded absently, looking at the horizon. "...there are a lot of things I'd like to ask, but there are also lines I don't want to cross. Mi- Suzaku. Are you doing alright? You said you were captured…" She frowned. "I know you had your ups and downs. How are you holding up?"

Pausing for a moment to take a look at one of my closest online friends, I sighed. "Being a captive is something I'd rather forget, and something I'm going to have to get therapy for. They… were not kind in the slightest. They tortured, belittled, and… I'll not speak more of the horrors in the abyss, sorry." I replied, a full body shudder rippling through my body. "But otherwise? I'm doing pretty good. I'm a girl in body and spirit now, which helps a lot." Pausing, I took a good, long look at Black Prince, "how are you holding up?" I asked, a note of concern in my voice.

She chuckled. "Doing well, actually. I'm here, stronger than ever, with a powerful soul and a job to do." Her face fell. "And yet, I may have been pulled from everything I had and everyone I knew. It'll be an adjustment, I think." Her lips drew into a thin line. "Isekai protagonists never angst as much as they probably should, methinks."

Giggling, I nodded in affirmative, taking a moment to gently correct a fault one of my crew had made while arming the aircraft. "Agreed. It's almost frightening how people ignore how much they'd lose if they isekai." With a sign, I turned towards my friend, "Sorry, I have to focus on this bit. My crew isn't trained well enough to do this without me helping."

"Hmm. Speaking of which, how are you connecting with your new family?"

I brightened visibly, though made no efforts to respond, too busy coordinating the efforts of my crew to spend any attention for a good while, before turning apologetically back to Black Prince. "Everyone is great. They do their best and are always willing to learn."

"...I meant your sister-ships, though I'm glad to hear you already consider your crew as such," Prince said with a chuckle. "I suppose I should do something similar with mine…"

I winced, "I don't have sister ships, Black Prince, unless you consider Taihou, who is my predecessor. Though I'm not sure how she'd react to me, nor if she's around."

"...ah. I'd assumed you were an unbuilt ship of an existing ship class." She frowned. "Not knowing naval history is going to bite my arse, isn't it?"

I nodded, "probably, yes. Something to do when you have internet access~" I replied smugly, secure in my middling knowledge of naval history. "Of course, I'm probably going to study up myself." I continued, smirking. While I spoke, I began raising my rifle, pointing it skyward in preparation to launch my aircraft.

"Fair enough. Ho- looks like we have incoming." Black Prince murmured, looking at the skyline.

Seconds later, I saw them as well, on my radar set, of course. A warning was bubbling on my lips even as I frantically continued my preparations to launch a strike. I would not go out in the manner of the Kidou Butai, I refused to!

"Incoming aircraft," I yelled, even as my hellcats screamed towards the incoming abyssal aircraft, "my portion of the CAP is moving to intercept!"

Enterprise, ever the calm before the storm, nodded. "Understood. All carriers, either launch your strike now or don't launch at all."

Beside me, Black Prince cursed as her rigging came alive, guns on her ghostly hull swiveling to face the incoming planes. "Suzaku, I'll give you as much AA cover as I can. That's one thing I should be adequate with."

"Let's hope we don't need to put up a wall of flack, dearie," Leyte interjected, "Hopefully our combat air patrol will be enough…"

I nodded, even as I watched the lead pilot of my F6F-5s blaze towards the enemy aviators, my air control tower guiding them towards the enemy radar contact.

"Let's- My fighters have made contact. The enemy air raid is larger than one carrier could field!" Wright growled, "We have at least four enemy carriers. Likely Wo-class."

"Affirmative," Saipan replied, having just finished launching the remainder of our strike. "Suzaku, if you could contribute to another wave of fighters…"

I nodded sharply. "On it!" I barked, preparing additional Hellcats for launch, then, as they readied, launching them. It would not be enough.

"Enemy strike thinned but not wiped out!" Enterprise barked, "Fleet, prepare for evasive maneuvers!"

"Wall of flack it is." Black Prince murmured, beginning to swerve back and forth evasively, her guns fixed on the skies. "It falls to the thunder of the guns to silence the hawks of war… as counter-intuitive as it may seem." She mumbled.

The escorts in the fleet cried out in an affirmation, some sporting bloodthirsty grins, others having faced set in determination. No plane would get past them if they had anything to say about it.

"They're here!" I cried, mostly for my own benefit, my bofors and ten centimeter guns opening up to engage the enemy, a cloud of flak and tracers flying forth from my ghostly hull. All around us, the same scene repeated, walls of flak and tracers bursting forth from each ship in reply to the horde of aircraft swarming towards us, even as one went down in a burst of flame as a VT shell went off right next to it, showering the unfortunate abyssal aviator with shrapnel and sending her plane screaming into the cold embrace of the pacific in a ball of flame.

Curses and cheers rise in equal measure as the gathered shipgirls fill the sky with lead and iron. The twisted forms of Abyssal planes crash from the sky or break off their attacks, but the rout is not complete. A few craft slip through the sheets of fire, releasing torpedoes or dropping payloads at the small fleet. A few bombs strike the water, and torpedoes zip through the gaps as girls weave aside.

Black Prince winced as a gout of water from an exploding bomb drenched her. "This dress is brand new, wankers!" She shouted, AA knocking the offending plane from the sky before it could make another pass. "You'd better hope in hell I can wash the salt out!"

I snorted even as I threw myself into a hard starboard turn to throw off the dive bomber screaming towards me, only for a VT shell to knock it out of the sky, screaming into the ocean beside me. "Report from my strike's leader!" I screamed, "they're on their way towards the abyssals last known position!"

A ragged cheer rose from the carriers as we weathered the last of the abyssal aircraft's attack, then sailed back into formation, the cruisers and destroyers falling in moments later. Laying a hand on my chest as so to reassure myself that I had made it through the strike, I sighed deeply, my eyes wide. "I made it…" I mumbled, breathing deeply, "I made it…"

"You did. And you will. And you will continue doing so, for many decades to come." Black Prince looped one arm under my own, pulling my side against her armor. "After all, we are Isekai heroines now, aren't we? We have not just an armor belt- we have Plot Armor!" She chuckled.

Giving a snort in response, I nodded. "I hope you're not serious about the plot armor," I replied, "Because that kind of attitude will get us killed…"

"I'm not. Still, there's a fine line between realism and fatalism. I'll do my level best to keep you on my side of it." Black Prince said, holding steady at my side. "What happens to a spiritual being when it doubts? When it fears, courts depression? Better to keep your attitude upbeat, less your morale plummet; and then you cannot muster the will to live in the fray."

A small grin made its way onto my face as I nodded, settling into silence as I patiently waited for my aircraft to get to the area the abyssal forces were last sighted in. Later, I narrowed my eyes at the horizon, "The strike is almost there." I muttered, a grim smile making its way onto my face.

Prince shrugged, turning away from the horizon. "If it's successful, it's not our problem. And we're too far away to watch the explosions."

"You are," I replied smugly, "I can see through the eyes of my pilots. It's really-"

Enterprise's head snapped around to look at me, "You can do what?" She asked, "How do you do it?"

I blinked, before staring Enterprise in the eyes, "I focus on my pilots, and-"

"Holy shit I can see through my pilot's eyes!" Wright chirped, the rest of the carriers turning to stare at her in unison, "What? Suzaku said we could do it, so I tried. And it worked~"

Enterprise made a noise of acute suffering before she rolled her eyes at the light carrier. "I suppose if Wright can do it…"

"Hey!"

Black Prince blinked. "Hmm. Outside-the-box thinking for the win? I suppose it is early days in this war so far. I wonder how many other 'obvious' tricks are only known to a few girls in the fleets?"

"Probably a bunch!" Wichita remarked over the radio, "There's actually an entire research group composed of shipgirls and humans trying to figure out exactly what our limits are!"

I blinked in response, before my eyes glazed over, occupied with seeing through the eyes of my pilots as they closed on the enemy formation, before finally, they dove, screaming towards the enemy with bravery abound, a heavy wall of flak and anti-air fire greeting them. It hurt, knowing that I would, for sure, lose pilots this day, and, even as I finished that thought, I winced as the viewpoint I had been occupying ceased to be, the plane the victim of a burst of flak.

But, the sacrifice would not be in vain, as several dive bombers screamed in, dropping their payload upon the vulnerable carrier princess, who, with a scream of defiance, went up in flames, thrice being struck upon her flight deck, her escorts fairing only slightly better, most of them managing to evade the attacks that had committed against them.

Then, it was the torpedo bomber's turn. They came in low, skimming the water as they approached the remaining Wo-class carriers, dropping their deadly payload with accuracy that defied reason. Seemingly guided by the hand of a higher power, three torpedoes struck one Wo, and yet another two struck the other. They screamed, their wails like music to my ears, and I grinned ferally as Enterprise's wave approached, delivering a rain of death and destruction as they ensured the death of the enemy carriers.

"All enemy carriers incapacitated," I reported, "Orders, Enterprise?"

Enterprise looked at the sky for a moment, likely communicating with Pearl, before sighing. "Withdraw from the field of battle. The enemy is done for, and the princess a burning hulk. Let's go home, girls."

As the fleet finally turned for home, Black Prince sighed. "At last. As much as I've enjoyed walking on water and fighting the good fight, I'm a little peckish."

"Guess we won't be needing the battleships, huh Enterprise?" I added, smiling as we sailed towards home, leaving the burning wrecks of the enemy behind us.

I'd always been a big eater in my past life, which was the reason for my chubby waistline and general stomach issues. Many times my eyes had been bigger than my stomach in the mess line, and being a good southern child I'd endeavored to clean my plate regardless.

That was no longer an issue.

"Pardon me." I belched quietly, setting aside my fourth empty plate, looking at the rest of the girls around me as they too tucked in. Six burgers, eight heapings of fries, two bowls of fruit salad, and a salad bowl of broccoli into my meal, and I found myself eyeing the dessert bar with relish. "What was it that saber used to say?"

Suzaku looked up from her much lighter meal, before deadpanning, "Hunger is the Enemy."

"Exactly. And it is our role to slay it." I murmured, then eyed her smaller stack of plates. "You need to eat more, Suzaku." Thank the heavens for note-taking fairies. No more forgetting names! "You're a carrier. You need to replace fuel, planes, and ammo."

The aforementioned carrier nodded, daintily biting into her food, before setting her fork down to chew. Swallowing, she stared at Black Prince, "And I will. I'm just enjoying the taste of the food instead of wolfing it down. Especially since I seem to actually be able to slow down my pace now." With that, Suzaku returned to her plate of food, finally finishing the third one, then getting up to return to the line that had formed in the cafeteria. "I'm going to get some more, you coming with me?"

"Of course." I stood, stretching, feeling my unfamiliar bits bounce slightly. When I'd finally gotten out of my armor, I'd found a significantly bound chest beneath my breastplate. I was going to chalk it up to 'magical sparkly shipgirl bullship' that my new mammaries had fit beneath the plate- while I wasn't quite as buxom as Atago, I could likely swap bras with Tenryuu with little issue.

I'd been able to inspect that part of myself when I'd made use of a mirror upon arrival. Blue eyes carried over from my last life, while my hair was a dark red. I had a bit stronger of a jawline than was normal for a shipgirl, along with broader shoulders; for all that I was undeniably female, I seemed to be a bit more of a stocky athlete than a supermodel.

Moving to the mess line, I took another glance at my friend. "Suzaku, have you made any new friends here? Or heard anything about our mutual acquaintances?"

The carrier paused, before shaking her head. "Haven't had time. I was quite literally summoned, refitted, and requested what was supposed to be a training cruise before we were in battle." She answered, taking an entire fish from the slightly baffled chef, "My thanks," She said, bowing to the chef as she hunted for the rest of the food she wanted, finally finding the rice she had been looking for. "Anyways, I believe that we're due for debriefing in… something like three hours, so we have some free time before we have to be anywhere. What do you think about hitting up the internet?"

"A little nervous, truth be told. We're not home. But what if we are?" I shook my head. "There were people I'll miss if they're not here, but if the other me is here… then what? Reach out to my friends as a stranger? Try to slot myself in as the sister I never had? Ignore them utterly, when…" I choked back a small sob, setting my shoulders. "I almost hope they don't exist here. Isn't that sad?"

Suzaku shook her head slowly, "No sadder than wishing that my family doesn't. But, more than likely, some kind of counterpart exists, and I've decided that I'm not going to go out of my way to seek them out in person. Better to let new relationships develop organically than cling to a past that I'll never get back." She sighed, a single tear falling from her eyes before she smiled, "And isn't that part of the "Isekai Adventure", Black Prince?"

"Yeah." I rubbed the side of my face as I collected my dessert, coffee, and another bowl of fruit. "Though, if that's the case… who's the protag?"

"Aren't we all the protagonists of our own story?" Suzaku replied whimsically, returning to her table, "And I don't think it truly matters, in the end. We'll laugh, we'll cry, but in the end, we fight to forge a path, the path of those that will walk the Earth far after we're gone."

"Not what I meant," I growled. "If we're Isekai characters, one of us will end up with a harem, the other will end up in the harem. I'm just wondering if I'll need to brush up on my nonexistent charisma."

Suzaku burst out laughing, attempting, and failing, to muffle her mirth. "God I hope not. While I'm okay with polyamory, I'd rather not deal with a harem." Pausing to start on her next serving of food, the carrier girl continued, "On top of that, as far as I'm concerned, frat regs probably exist, and even if they're politely ignored, it's probably not worth the trouble."

"...frat regs." I pause, tapping my lower lip. "I have yet to sign with the navy, actually. And I never got a full answer on how we are perceived by the navy, or whether there's just one naval command globally. Do you know the answers to that?"

The carrier shakes her head, "No. Honestly, we're probably better off waiting to ask all our questions. We do have a debrief in…" Pausing, likely to consult with her fairies, Suzaku continues, "about two hours and forty-five minutes, so we can probably get some answers there." Gently sighing, Suzaku quickly panned her gaze around the room, a small smile briefly flickering into existence as she found who she was looking for. "Hey, Johnston! Can I ask you a question?"

The destroyer in question tilted her head to the right, before nodding, "Sure Suzaku, what do you need?"

"Are there any public computers available? Edys and I want to do some research!" The aforementioned carrier replied, the excitement her voice obvious to all those who could hear.

Pausing to consider the carrier's question, Johnston answered, "There should be some in the dorms, but I don't know if they'd be available right now."

"...am I allowed in the dorms yet?" I asked, frowning. "I'm not in the chain of command yet." Then I shook my head. "I suspect I'm being silly, but I'd rather not step on any toes until I know the lay of the land."

"You're both in there, the chain of command, that is, temporarily at least. The Admiral will probably explain more after the debrief." Johnston replied idly, "Regardless, no one will care if you hang out in the shipgirl dorms. Especially since you've both seen combat since returning."

"Alright, if you say so," I said, letting some of my more melancholic nature shine through. "Thank you for your time, Miss Johnson." I gave a small bow. "So… computers? Have you had a chance to use them yet, Suzaku?"

"Nope." Suzaku deadpanned, "Regardless, gimme another ten minutes to finish my meal, and I'll either come join you or head over to the dorms. I think I know where they are."

"In that case, if we're still eating, I spy a tray of cookies being set out." I smiled as I stood. "Can I get you anything?"

"No, thank you."

I nodded, standing fully as I meandered towards the line, stepping back as a gaggle of what I could only think of as little kids swarmed ahead of me. I smiled as each girl snagged a pair of fresh chocolate chip cookies, watching them behave as the children they seemed to be. Destroyers, rambunctious scamps. It's going to take an adjustment to see what seems like nine year olds as soldiers and warriors. But most of these girls have bigger kill counts than my own. As I took three cookies from the tray and snagged a milk carton, I couldn't help but consider my options. Stand out or remain inconspicuous? I am Black Prince. But I'm also not just Black Prince.

…how about we just act as ourselves? Find a role, step into it, and let all judge us on how we behave naturally within that role.
I nodded resolutely as I sat back down, looking at Suzaku. "So, if we're on a limited timeframe, what should we search first online?"

The carrier shrugged, "Honestly, I'm probably going to go surfing the forums. If they exist. To be frank, I can't be bothered to do in-depth research about the state of the world when I have plenty of first-hand sources on base. And we'll be meeting with a bunch of them pretty soon."

"If you're going to look over popular sources, I'm going to take a look at the mass media." I gulped down a cookie. "Then go look up Touhou memes."

Suzaku cracked a grin, "Honestly, I should have guessed." Then, the carrier girl fell silent, fully focused on the "enemy" that was her food.

With a smile, I downed my last cookie, even as important thoughts filled my head, and sent the saner members of my crew scrambling. Namely, what kind of impact does a throwing knife have when thrown by a shipgirl, and how many of them could I carry at any one time?

I leaned back in my chair, looking over to where Edys was hunched over her computer. I smiled gently as I looked over her, then reached out and gave her a nudge, "What's got you so focused Edys?"

She shook her head. "There's a ton of speculation about us- shipgirls, I mean." She clarified. "But outside official channels, there's very little research being done into how we work, or what the limits are." She frowned. "On the one hand, that's good; no one's trying to experiment on shipgirls without their permission. On the other, I'm paranoid enough to not just want to rely on official sources."

I shrug, "It makes sense that the military is keeping a tight lid on this," I state, paging through my counterpart's various works, noting the distinct lack of shipgirl fics. "As an additional note, the whole shipgirl phenomena didn't take off in this world. Hell, Girls FrontLine doesn't even exist."

"...untapped market?" Edys mused, stroking her chin. "Wait, does FGO exist?"

I pause, mostly to open a new tab and execute a google search, "Yeah it does, though… looks like there were a lot of delays recently. Understandable, considering the war and all."

"So we wouldn't be the first to start a gacha game… I know no way to put together such a thing anyhow." Edys said. "However, my research into Shipgirl legal and social status has been far more productive. Namely, we're celebrities. Just… with all that implies."

I wince. There went my hikikomori tendencies. "Wonderful." I deadpanned, "Regardless, I appear to have found myself. And you. Thankfully, I haven't created an account, and I managed to resist the temptation to see if other me uses the same passwords."

"...wait, what?" Edys said, face falling. "...are there recent posts? Did they post the same things?" She swallowed. "I… this…"

"I found them about an hour ago." I said idly, doing my best to conceal my discomfort with this whole situation "And yeah, it's… about as mind bending as you'd expect. Especially since… I got into SV due to kancolle in the first place. The me in this universe got into SV for a similar reason, as in they're an even bigger ship nerd than I am, and they…" I fell silent, shuddering, "Let's just say there was likely more than one point of divergence since they're farther into writing one of my original fic ideas I had than I am. As in they're published." I whispered, looking at Edys in a daze, my carefully constructed mask falling apart. "I'm not a bestseller, but based on their most recent posts, they're in a much better place than I am."

As I explained, Edys' face fell further and further. As I finished, she closed her eyes taking several deep breaths. "...okay. Okay. No going back, no reaching out. Not… not without proof." She opened her eyes, blinking away tears. "A new start. What a joke." She set her shoulders. "No hiding, no links to the past. Can we even admit our pasts, then? Other than we were human?"

Still dazed, I nodded, "No reason not to. Hell, I… don't want to hide it. Better to rip off the bandage than constantly patch that wound over and over again, letting it grow larger and larger in the process."

Edys nodded slowly. "Yes. You've been here longer; do you know of anyone who we can talk to?"

I shake my head, before pausing, and shake my head again, purposefully tearing my gaze away from the oh-so-familiar Moderator's profile and forcing myself to close the page, "Probably best to deal with it during the debrief. Admiral's likely to assign me a therapist regardless, since I can't imagine Prinz didn't tell him that I'm a PoW. One who was quite literally tortured on and off for…" I shudder, forcing myself to remember, "a month, give or take a week."

Edys looked at me with a mournful expression, then stepped forward, pressing her face into my breast bone as she gave me a hug. "...so sorry, Miho. Never again. If we suffer, we suffer together. Got it?"

Dryly, I reply, "Let's not suffer period eh? Also, I'd rather you never experience… that ever. Honestly, I'll probably order my crew to scuttle me if it ever looks like I'll get captured."

"No." She growled. "You're all I have left for now." She clenched me closer. "I will come for you if they try to take you… and I will join you if you go down. At least, if it happens any time soon." She took a half step back, looking up into my eyes while holding onto my hips. "Understood?"

I sigh once more, touched, though not quite willing to show my approval, "It's not like I could convince you anyway Edys. Or would you prefer Tale?"

"Edys." She gave a weak smile. "And you're Suzaku. I'll always be Tale, even if there's another. But… I'm not him. Not just him. Or even him anymore." The smile dropped into a pensive frown. "So glad to not have dysmorphia." She started. "I mean…"

"Dysphoria," I corrected gently, not at all irritated. It had actually been a concern of mine that Edys would… not be happy in her new body, "I'm just glad that you aren't…" I struggle with my wording for a bit, "Having issues with your body." I finish lamely, returning my attention to the computer, and gritting my teeth. "Anyway, I'm… probably going to not create an SV account yet, mostly just… I want to ask the Admiral if I'd be allowed to."

"If they try to ban that sort of thing, I'm going to head off and found Outer Heaven." Edys mumbled, before she shook her head. "Probably not a problem. I found some of the legendary and infamous Naka Idol videos online, along with a few thriving Youtube streams by kanmusu. If they can post those, an SV account is likely small potatoes."

I sighed, before nodding, "Honestly, I was just making excuses." With a few quick keystrokes and mouse clicks, I moved to create my account, before pausing, a furious blush forming on my face. "I… do not have an email account. How could I forget that I do not have an email account?!"

"The instinctive knowledge that we of the digital age have, and always shall have, an email account, a Facebook page, and a bookmark tab full of memes?" Edys moved to stand at my side, looking at the page. "Gmail exists, yes? That's easily solved."

I giggled, shaking my head, "Yeah, it does. I'm just embarrassed that I forgot." With my piece said, I began the process of creating an email, before groaning again. "I'm gonna need to pause on this. Gmail is requiring another email address, and I really do not want to creep other me out."

"It'd be a cool story… though." Edys paused. "Do you think we'll get a military email? You could use that."

"That would be the plan," I muttered, before freezing. Then, as I slowly comprehended what exactly I was thinking of, I began to curse furiously.

"...are these Japanese swears? Should I get a bar of soap for your mouth?" Edys said, eyeing me with some confusion.

I froze again, not having realized I had slipped into Japanese. "Edys, I am a Japanese Capital Ship. You are a British Light Cruiser." I scowled, glaring at the computer, "Do the math."

Edys nodded gravely, then snapped one wrist, a yellow cake of soap appearing there. "Indeed. Open wide, my lady. Something here is filthy~"

I growled, "Edys, I am not joking. More than likely, I am going to be shipped to Japan, and you to Britain. As much as we are people, we are also ships."

"...maybe." She frowned. "If that's the case… well, it won't be immediately. And we can stay in contact without issue; not like the Abyssals have killed satellite communication."

I nodded, a frustrated scream bubbling right on the tip of my tongue before I shoved it down, plastering a smile on my face, "I… don't think I'm in the right frame of mind for more research. I… I'm going to go for a walk. I wouldn't mind if you came along, but…"

"I'm coming with you." She arched one eyebrow. "After all, I've yet to do my cleaning." She held up the soap.

A dry laugh escaped my mouth, before, with a sigh, I headed out of the dorms, only to pause as my seventh sense tingled, alerting me to-

"Suzaku~"

"Hello Johnston Jr." I greeted, a bit of forced cheer in my voice, "Is it that time already?"

The Gearing shook her head, "Naw, Vestal sent me to go grab Edys. Something about a mandatory check-up?"

Edys paused. "Vestal… the repair ship, yes?" At Johnston's nod, Edys turned back to me. "I will not be refusing doctor's orders, so I'll have to call off our walk. Another time?"

I nodded, a note of melancholy staining my voice, "Another time. I'll go see if one of the other carriers are free…"

"I will rejoin you soon, no worries." She gave a wave as she fell in behind Johnson. As she left, I furtively looked around the room, scanned the area with my radar set, and, finding it clear, made my way to one of the corners in the room, and broke down sobbing.

AN: And thus, Suzaku and Black Prince's adventures continue~. Sorry for the long hiatus everyone! I was, and still am, working through a bunch of crap in my life. It took a solid breakdown for me to regain my muse for anything I've been writing, and boy am I glad to be back. Updates will come as I finish them, as I have very clearly realized that I just don't function well on an update schedule. Thank you once more for your patience. Enjoy the words~
