Kisuke Urahara was normally fairly unflappable.
Poised, if odd. A man with many plans, to say the least.
Perhaps a bit silly, with a tendency to cause other people to fall for pranks or be forced to do awkward dances or say funny phrases to activate powerful tools or equipment.
This might be karma.
Right now, he felt pretty pranked. "This is Shadow?"
The tiny creature with a hole through its chest, bright cheerful puffy pants and a festive mask gave a thumbs up!
Though the pants were made out of clinking bone fragments, that was clearly some sort of mutated Hollow mask, and despite being within touching range he STILL could not sense this monster!
What was he supposed to say here? "I heard he was bigger at one point?"
And suddenly he was looking down towards a torso, as the itty bitty buddy swolled up into a massive muscled mountain. Those poofy pants now looked perfectly fitted as the former golf ball sized torso hole now was large enough for a kid to crawl through.
Ah.
He felt his hat shift slightly as he slowly looked up the rock hard body, still made of that unknown beyond black surface. The only reason why it didn't feel more eldritch to nearby humans was probably due to the near invisible layer of dust and such that coated the thing, preventing the true Darkness to be so easily detected by mortal eyes.
Looking up at the still cheerful pink mask, he idly considered that he hadn't felt so 'small' in quite a long time.
It wasn't due to size, most comrades and foes could range from knee height to taller than any tree or building… No, it was the SCALE of what he wasn't sensing.
This close, during the transition from form to form, he had caught a glimpse.
Not a full understanding, no detailed view, just… A touch. A feather light brush against something other.
Between the stars, there is still a glow. Light bleeds into the atmosphere, both from within and without, and similar issues happen within the body of the viewer themselves.
Viewing true Darkness like this was tricky to encounter… Perhaps the only location he had ever researched that even came close would be the
Garganta.
A void between anything, one that could be torn open like hungry jaws that normally only the Hollows could easily traverse, through raw instinct and some unknown natural pull.
Oh, others could learn to pass through as well, even use their own internal spirit energy particles to forge a pathway, to avoid falling endlessly in a space without time or… Well, it was an odd absence of a place. Gravity itself only tended to work there due to prior expectations, not some hard and fast law.
But to the Hollow, that pathway was natural and effortless. At least the basic use of the method, though more advanced functions could be trained or odd skills could be uncovered and put to use.
Yes… For a brief moment, as Shadow shifted from toy to tower, he had felt something like the endless void of the Garganta… But deeper on some level.
His mind struggled to record any details he may have missed.
Had there been stars? Odd pairs of pink glowing stars in many directions?
A nearby cough brought him back to the here and now. "Sorry, what was that?"
Isshin Kurosaki sighed. "I asked if you are done taking measurements?"
Oh those? Long ago, all the family and friends had been scanned walking into the Candy Shop in the first place! "Yep, for now it will be good enough to come up with better tools and tests."
He gave a warm smile to the surprisingly innocent (And hard to suspect) Shadow. "Thank you for your patience, young one."
At least he FELT young, even compared to the actual human children visiting his shop currently. "You may go join the others and I will let you all know what my equipment says in a moment, alright?"
Shadow blinked…And flickered tiny again as Darkness pulsed, holding out his claws and bouncing with eagerness!
Oh, right. "Here you go! One lollipop, for the good little patient."
Shadow beamed with joy… And his mask cracked open, exposing pink fangs before the Candy vanished entirely inside the maw, and cheerful crunching filled the now silent room.
That… That wasn't marked in the scans. Or the surveillance reports from Yoruichi!
With a far more brittle smile than before, he carefully waved the monster to one side. "Off you go! I'll let you all know very soon, thank you again."
Still chewing, Shadow bounced out of the room.
So.
That had happened. "Pretty sure those teeth don't exist most of the time. Probably get formed as needed, not stored elsewhere."
Isshin stared at the now closed door. "That wasn't how he was eating before. At home, he just… Tossed food into nowhere, and was done with it! Not… Not whatever THAT was!"
Meh, new information was the PURPOSE of research! "Right, how much have you shared with the young ones? Am I still banned from mentioning the more odd bits of backstory?"
Isshin sighed. "I've told them a lot, but the two guests in the other room just know the basics. Nothing about the potential risks that Ichigo may face during training, just… Just the general state of the spiritual worlds."
Ichigo's dad slumped. "With something as unusual as this whole situation, I had to give up almost entirely on the idea of hiding information 'for their own good', that would just put them in more danger."
The father sighed, but got that hard focus of a warrior in his eyes again. "They will need methods of communication, and oversight, or others may try to exploit them to better target my family."
Kisuke waved that off. "Naturally, I've been ensuring all the people Ichigo interacts with are monitored." To track the rapid growth of their Souls while being nourished by his raw power, if nothing else. "But they shouldn't need the same sort of training, yes? Nor your younger ones?"
Isshin shook his head. "Some basic concealment tools for them would be more than enough, they haven't been exponentially growing recently like my eldest."
Yes, THAT had been a frustrating situation. A baby that could emit more power than a whole crowd of strangers, who grew in energy reserves at a ridiculous exponential rate! How the kid hadn't popped already was ANYONE'S guess, especially since exploratory surgery was banned.
It was a bit frustrating, honestly. Having some sort of godlike physique within reach of his tools and equipment but having to care about the survival of the testing subject.
Seriously, half the reason researching Hollows was so much easier was due to how lax the restrictions for data gathering were in comparison to almost any other field of study!
No, focus. "I will need to gather data over the next month or so for the girls too… The odd pulse of power that set off so many problems seems to have had some sort of alteration effects on nearly anything with a Soul."
And having a good chunk of the Gikongan shift from Soul Candy straight into near functional modified artificial Souls had been a shock and a half! "Mostly beneficial changes, such as recovery and enhanced stability and some sort of calming effect, but I still want to keep them under observation until everyone in the area stabilizes."
Plus, again, more data!
Isshin gave him that LOOK. The one that said he knew the researcher was up to something but couldn't quite put his finger on it.
Which was fair enough, as MOST people couldn't determine Urahara's true goals in the first place. But this time it was pure data collection! Honest!
Look at this honest face, wasn't it convincing? His innocent intentions were dang near dripping from how trustworthy he was posing at the moment!
Isshin glared HARDER. "Maybe."
Good enough! "Right, go check on your kids and let me get to the good stuff…" Oops. "I mean, let me get to work!"
He glanced at the data collection network.
He wasn't drooling, right? Right!
~~~Broken Adventure~~~
In the Darkness, a large number of floating giants with plain identical white masks silently wept.
Each tear dispersed into hundreds of new Hollows and Souls, spawning a dense fog of Hell Butterflies that fluttered in massive flocks to somewhere for some purpose.
Yet the process of purification, of cleansing the ones carried from the tortured souls bearing them onwards into eternity, required more time.
Even the first Menos Grande was still here, shedding an infinite load of despair and loss and pain and torment.
The number of collected giants grew over time, as more and more empowered pink eyed Hollows managed to ascend to Hueco Mundo's underground forests… But none were as strong individually as these innumerable giants.
Not yet.
So they ambushed those powerful and mindless towers of energy with numbers… These giant, slow moving, nearly mindless hungry creatures falling to endless weak hands and effort.
When that undirected power was fully focused, when those warring souls were freed and replaced with raw power and emotion and concepts and connections…
Well, they certainly wouldn't be massive mounds of screaming Hollows anymore.
In fact, for each of these Giants, the numerous Souls strong enough to fight for dominance may all end up shifting directly into Adjuchas, the middle class of Menos Grande.
Significantly stronger and yet no larger than most individuals, insignificantly tiny compared to their former body/prison, the Adjuchas were considered the bare minimum of power in this endless land of sand.
They still hunted and fed on the others, but hunger could be ignored for much longer without losing themselves and their precious mental identity… And if they consumed even more? If they collected enough power?
They could become Vasto Lordes, able to dominate any battlefield. Kings of the Hollow, rulers of an endless hungry army.
But again, unlike the usual process where only the most powerful of Hollows manage to pass each hurdle and grow in power, where numerous Souls were treated as captives and energy sources and power manipulation assistants…
This time, things would be different. Much different.
Instead of hundreds of millions of fighting Souls being subdued to evolve a single Gillian into something small and powerful… Each individual Soul would be given the chance all at once.
Some would directly pass on from this purgatory, entering the cycle of life.
Others couldn't let go, and would Hollowfy.
The most powerful of these would drop into something like a meditative coma, slowly recovering until they shifted directly into the deadly and powerful Adjuchas level Menos Grandes.
And they would be loved.
The Darkness covered the crying towers of Souls, it cradled the spawned Hollows with endless regrets, it gently sent off the ones who found peace in an impossible land at an impossible time.
In the Darkness, the number of captured Gillian continued to grow.
That rate of capture would significantly increase once the saved ones being treated were able to recover to some extent.
That rate of capture would increase exponentially.
Pink eyes watched from numerous shadows as quiet Hollows searched an endless bone forest for more to save.
~~~Broken Adventure~~~
Ichigo was clearly hearing things. "What do you mean, a 'Death-like state'?"
His father winced. "Ah, yes… Well, your Soul is ridiculously powerful to begin with, but in the end you are still a living human. Until you get used to the experience, you won't be able to fully disconnect from your body to reach your spirit form naturally."
What. "I don't follow."
Isshin coughed. "Right. Every Soul has a Chain of Fate, binding them to what they desire, treasure, hate, and so on and so forth. These chains can be feeble or powerful, and can connect to anything… People, places, pets, ideals, concepts, you name it. Almost everyone has hundreds of these chains, but the most powerful one and the most stable and sturdy example is this one."
He tapped his own chest. "The one binding you to your physical form. People like me, who were born in Soul Society, can easily find inner peace and release that chain's anchors, leaving our spirit form free to fight as needed. When using a Gigai, or artificial body, we tend to use an artificial soul to pilot the thing when we need to get out and fight something so it won't be damaged."
Karin blinked. "Wait, that isn't your real body?"
His dad blinked. "I mean, it is? It's the only one I ever wore, at least."
Karin paused… And frowned. "Then how the hell were WE born if you aren't even using a real body!?"
Isshin shrugged. "Gigai's are REALLY well made. And the important part of having kids isn't just the genetics, but the Soul. The weirdo I introduced you to earlier, Kisuke Urahara, calculated what my DNA would theoretically be if my Soul had been born in mortal form and somehow made up this body as a custom thing."
Freaky, and really messed up that Dad even remotely commented on how he and mom had relations, but not important right now. "Go back to nearly killing me with a pill. Tell me about that bit more."
Tatsuki also seemed fairly concerned about the idea, which made him feel warm inside… Orihime on the other hand was distracting Shadow and Yuzu as they tried odd combinations of the available condiments and various candies.
Isshin paused. "Oh, right. Anyway, unless your Chain of Fate is destroyed or you find enlightenment to some degree, you can't just leave your body. Even if you DO leave your body, you would still be chained up to the thing like a leash."
Tatsuki scoffed! "Enlightenment!? You make it sound so easy!"
He winced. "I suppose? It is possible for people of any power level to do it though, even accidentally. Spirit walking, out of body experiences, Soul Mediums, some religious organizations, and all that stuff. But since I doubt Ichigo can stay out of danger for a few decades to meditate and refine his world view and all that, it would be better to go with the suicide pills."
Ichigo flinched. "THE WHAT!?"
He coughed. "The enlightenment pills." He waved off the concern. "Look, I may not enjoy working with the guy all the time, but he's earned my respect and my trust. I mean, I'm still going to look over every step of the process because he can be a bastard and a troll and get easily distracted, but I have no doubt he can safely help Ichigo detach his Chain of Fate in a safe and secure manner with minimum risks of danger."
DAMN it, old man! Sound more confident when you say shit like that! "I am not going to take any near death murder pills. That sounds remarkably stupid."
Isshin sighed, resigned… But also relieved. "Well, we can at least try the meditation exercises then? At least for a few months, unless your power growth rate spikes again like it did last month. That was a rough week."
Ichigo blinked. "Wait, my only options are a death pill or meditation for twenty years!?"
His father chuckled. "I doubt you are THAT much of a prodigy, unprecedented power generation levels or no. But if you have some of your old man's talent, I bet you could be ready to start hard core training of your Soul in less than forty years! No, thirty five!"
They stared blankly at his overly proud expression and slightly puffed chest. "After all, the Shiba clan always produced astounding people! I bet within less than thirty years of being freed from his body, if Ichigo dedicates his full effort and focus, he could break all records! Maybe even hit the power levels of a seated lieutenant!"
They glanced at each other, confused a bit, as their father continued to ramble. "I mean, asking him to hit Captain is a bit much maybe, since it takes ten years of dedicated effort to find one's Bankai if they are lucky and even longer to train the ability to top level, and he wouldn't want to miss the girls growing up and all that, and maybe he would take a few decades off training to give me lots and lots of grandbabies for me to tell Masaki about and…"
Ichigo held up a hand. "Hold up: I either take a pill, which you say would put me near death and hurt like hell, or spend over forty years navel gazing and stuff before I can even START learning how to defend my family?"
Isshin blinked, then shrugged. "I mean, you can train your body and stuff I guess, but Souls interact with reality differently than normal material. If I somehow fully recovered my abilities and attempted to use my skills while still in this Gigai I'd probably pulp my skeleton in the process."
They all winced at that.
He sighed. "Urahara suspects that won't be as big an issue with you? That your mother's genetics, her ability to use spiritual powers with a human body, should have helped you adapt? But it is all theory. Supposedly, as your Soul grows more strong it is enhancing your body and stuff as well, which is the current theory about why your power generation rates keep shooting up."
Ichigo scowled. "I can't wait until Soul Society decides our family is 'Quincy enough' to eradicate, or until one of Shadow's distant relatives decides to hunt us down for a snack."
His father slumped. "Which is why I was suggesting the pill. Trust me, I nearly strangled the striped hat bastard when he brought the idea up, but…" He sighed.
Ichigo frowned, and oddly his instincts and inner conflict seemed to pause, to focus as well.
There had to be a better idea than this.
Waiting forever was flat out not an option.
His own impatience aside, Ichigo was not a moron. He could feel the context of the information dumped on him today, and the most important issue was his power growing to dangerous levels and expanding at even more dangerous rates.
Even if nothing ever happened, as unlikely as such an optimistic prediction would be… He didn't have TIME to wait for the safe and stable process to show results.
If his energy generation rate shot up any higher, he might not even have months!
Something unseen pulled his focus to the side. "What about Shadow? Or Gem?"
Isshin blinked. "Huh?"
He pointed to one side. "I feel a connection to him, and Gem seems to know a lot… Maybe they have an idea?"
Worth a shot.
Without waiting for his stunned father to respond, Ichigo moved over to the group dipping snacks into mustard. "Hey Shadow, got a moment?"
The tiny thing blinked his pink eyes and gave a cheerful thumbs up!
Right, his instincts felt like this was a good idea. "I need a way to separate my soul from my body safely, without hurting either one. Do you or Gem have any ideas? I really don't want to be put in a medical coma or be forced to take poison just to earn the right to BEGIN training."
Shadow paused, and suddenly started wiggling his arms!
Oh! "You do!?"
He nodded rapidly, and paused… Before very slowly looking left and right while the rest of the room (And a strangely concerned father) watched in interest.
Shadow did some subtle shoulder duking.
Hang on, what? "What do you mean, 'Keep this from Gem'?"
Before anyone could move, Ichigo's shadow sprouted pink fangs as MASSIVE black jaws rose up and…
C̴̨̛̯̖͙̲͕̮̣̥̱̠̬̖̙͍̹̀ṟ̷̭͙̱͖͎͈̟̰͟͜u̡͢͝͏̛̥̪̖̞̦̲͚̺̜ǹ̖̹͈̯̰̰̩̥͓̟̕͞͠ͅͅc͢͟͏̫̖̳̮͉̱̣̲̠̤h̵҉͚̫͙̝̬͕͓̬̹͇̘̣̤͜͠!!!
.
The room froze as they all stared at where Ichigo had been.
Shocked. Growing horror. Rage.
Then, just as suddenly, the Darkness T͔̮̲̳̹͈͉w̖̘i̬̫ͅs̫t̥̯̰̥e͚̟̞̲̩͇d͍.
S̸̨̡̮̳̹̘̙̹̘̖̯̺̣̰̘̯̻ͅṔ̤͉͈̟̼̱̯̭̳̮͖̕Ḷ̢̛̰̭͢͜͝Ó͓͚̲̫̬̪͟R̵̵̼͓̹̥̳̝͈̖̯̲̣͖͖̞̝͝ͅT͏̶̴̡̜̻̗̮͙̦̪͈̫͉̼̖̳̦̳͍̜!
.
And before Isshin could slaughter this monster, his son was back.
Two of them.
Though one felt like a supernova spewing spiritual energy everywhere, and the other had glowing pink eyes. Very CONFUSED pink eyes.
Shadow ignored the room again and went back to dipping the mint candies in ketchup this time. More Research! More Candy! Whee!
~~~Broken Adventure ~~~
Kisuke held his body very, very still.
At least it was an easy task to do, considering the massive mountain of new debris covering his lab, floor, tables, and self.
That energy pulse had been WAY closer, FAR more localized, somehow restrained despite being orders of magnitude greater than anything his equipment was prepared for, and now his body was buried under incredibly valuable scraps of data.
Again.
Damn it, this was twice in the SAME DAY!
At least this time, after the disaster of earlier today, he had ensured the storage mediums were robust and able to withstand BEYOND catastrophic failures.
The new protocols had worked too, since he could feel a few of those devices attempting to melt into his spine at the moment as they attempted to cool down. Fully recoverable! He was a genius!
Now if only he had asked someone to check in on him at regular intervals.
Sigh.
Right, step by step! Let's preserve this Data and try to salvage… Whatever wasn't phasing out of reality. It was beyond frustrating that the best detection methods could become this unstable, normal equipment made for mortals would just burn out or give bad results or something.
But no, to get the impossible quality stuff you had to include some very delicate materials and some frankly unreasonably unstable components… Oh well.
It was probably his fault for assuming Ichigo wouldn't have taken the Chain of Fate dispersal pill already.
Also, a bad assumption or two had been made about the energetic reaction of releasing all the seals and bindings on his mortal body all at once.
Plus, the few of the more stable tools that still operated seemed to be reporting that Ichigo suddenly became twins, which either implied severe physical damage to his equipment that HADN'T evaporated into liquid plastic and metal, or other things had gone off the rails, as it were.
At least this time, the energy wave wasn't covering much further than the building. And it also didn't feel like it was altering everyone's Soul like the previous one had, which was probably a positive.
With far more practice than any man should have, he gently shifted his toes to better manipulate the materials trapping him to the floor. Another twenty minutes or so and at least he would have his foot free.
Which would be progress!
Unfortunately his hands were caught mid transfer between data racks, and he couldn't risk using either of them without independent observation to verify their stability first.
But with one foot free, the issue was half solved already!
Progress would be made this day!
~~~Broken Adventure~~~
Karin blinked at her older brother. Brothers? "What the HELL!?"
Shadow ignored them all.
Ichigo blinked as he looked down at his odd black outfit with white bone plates. "Huh… That was freaky."
Right next to him, his body slowly starred at his own hands with glowing pink eyes. "What. The. Fuck!?"
Yuzu gasped! "LANGUAGE!"
BOTH Ichigo's winced. ""Sorry Yuzu.""
Karin waved at them both, her father having gone senile or something to the side. "Nope, everything is on hold until someone tells me what the hell just happened."
The two young men looked at each other. ""We need to swap.""
And they touched hands.
With a flicker, the Ichigo wearing the black robes with white armor plates shifted his posture as his eyes began to brightly glow pink.
Meanwhile, the one dressed as a normal young man looked completely mundane, but tightly constrained and controlled…
If no one knew better, they would say he looked and felt completely 'normal', at least from an energy point of view.
Ichigo looked at Ichigo. "That's better." "I agree."
Karin held up her hands. "Time Out. What the hell!?"
They shrugged. "I think I was sorted?" They pointed to the right. "That is now me with power that feels like Dad and Shadow." Then to the left. "That is me with something that feels more like you girls."
Isshin was still out of it. "What?"
Ichigo blinked as something inside pulsed. "Huh… I'm part Shinigami from dad with the Hollow energies inherited from mom's wounds, from when the tainted power had tried to escape confinement during my birth."
They pointed to the Ichigo in normal clothing. "And I'm a 'normal' human with mom's Quincy abilities. Don't ask me how we know that, or how I am both of us at the same time."
Yuzu paused, thinking… And clapped with a HUGE smile! "I'm going to make you TWO birthday cakes!"
They both blinked at her, the one in the black outfit far more emotive and easy going while the one in his previous clothing felt oddly serious and focused. "You don't have to go out of the way, Yuzu." "I deeply appreciate the sentiment in which it was given though."
Karin frowned. "Well… You both FEEL like my idiot brother."
They blinked. "HEY!" "Hmm."
Isshin didn't know what was going on. "What?"
Orihime clapped next to a bright red blushing Tatsuki. "See? It's just like in your book! Every prince gets a harem! Though I don't remember it being a harem of the prince himself, this is probably close enough, right?"
The girl was too busy ogling double beefcake. "Mmm."
She absently nodded. "Mine."
As his sisters shared a glance, both Ichigos awkwardly shuffled… One blushing while the other carefully looked to one side.
His father interjected. "What?"
