What makes me laugh most about it is that some of the elders might look into the process and think 'okay, he is not too bright, but dedicated and focused. Lets see if we can get him to latch onto another idea for a while and see if he stumbles across something interesting again'. Mainly, because if he actually manages to make said useful artifact out the sheer need to prove his paranoia... what else can they steer him into possibly making? So long as they don't actually tell him of course.

That said, I love the Brother Hou humor sections :D

Also, it would be funny if it failed to detect Adam... but it registered one of the Elders/Healer Jin right next to him. Failure for Hou, useful for everyone else.

Honestly, I am willing to recommend this long ass story to random people, just so that they get to enjoy the antics of my new favoritist character ever.
Brother Hou.
I really wish he would be a recurring character for the rest of this story somehow.

I actually sort of want one of brother Hou's artifacts to be stolen/claimed by a Sect Ancient before he is able to give it to Adam. It turns out that brother Hou was actually on to something as the Sect Ancients actually love his stuff. Everyone else thinks that he is nuts.

Those Ancients might actually be able to use those artifacts to remember better times / relive past moments. Can't wait for the Sect Old Man Henderson to be irked that he isn't getting any of these neat gifts.

I actually like the idea that his stuff works, but it tends to make his rep like Bloody Stupid Johnson or has similar interesting effects.

If Adam thinks that the girl needs the same energy that he does, why doesn't he put her in his personal little power circle to see how she does?

I enjoyed this chapter. It had lots of character interactions/viewpoints.

This is still the early days. I can't wait to see how things go in like a decade with him around. You know Adam becoming a quiet Sect secret that everyone is keeping. Recruitment is up and other sects wonder how they do it. They think the Sect has a visiting Ancient around not someone like Adam.

She lifted another green jade slip. An entire library worth of detection methods, identification tricks, energy matrices... this one jade slip alone, while the contents were nearly impossible to be put into action by others, exposed so much about how spiritual energy worked, how the body of a Cultivator adapted to changes of the spirit, just... so many gold nuggets of treasure scattered over the massive floor of knowledge, as if worth nothing.
<...>
Elder Cho had seen effects like this before. Some Battle Skills or innate abilities from Martial Spirits let one walk on clouds or fade into shadows, teleport, and so such. She had just never heard of someone achieving such a feat using basic formation patterns... did ALL such abilities work like this!? How would one even know?
It's almost as if they were just fumbling around in the dark with alchemy and Adam came along with a periodic table, some microscopes and a spectrometer.

The way this is described, the sect barely even knows anything about qi at all. They know it exists and helps cultivation, but have no idea how it behaves or what properties it might have?

Pretty much how xianxia works. Ancient techniques and artefacts, or legendary bloodlines/constitutions, no true understanding of the mechanics of qi. And to be fair, any knowledge starts to be discovered at higher levels(developed senses) where you not only need to work harder to advance, but you have to start from zero to truly understand what's going on. And you can't try things on yourself, at that point you're already at your peak when you have the spare time and resources, but the beginner stuff has no benefit to you anyway. All in all, I think most people in a position to do research have better things to do with their time. Or are the hoarding type.

"Adam says that he believes you have the same odd energy affinity that HE had. Which is why he wanted you to become his student in the first place."
Now she knows she's a real protagonist, with a ridiculous advantage like that.

This seems like a terminology mixup, with "strands" being both lesser and greater than "wisps". That or perhaps this first quote is suppose to mean that there are strands in the environment, from which she can care and control wisps?
Outside the circle, it was as if existence ignored her. Only fragments of spiritual energy, if any, came her way.

But here? Whole strands of power, an entire wisp in only an hour or so!
She felt her breath catch. "ah..." No, calm. "No, I may have had... a few problems getting started... but today, I feel I can easily reach a dozen wisps of power!" Just... just stay up later, do a few more attempts, skip one night of sleep...

Sister Quan looked miserable. "That... that's great. But if things were going as designed, you would be working with strands of energy at this point... hundreds, possibly."

Huh.

~~~Broken Adventure~~~
Elder Cho was rubbing her forehead in exasperation... and a potential headache. "And... no one had bothered to ask him directly?"
While this was an excellent jump cut, and I really liked Elder Cho's ruminations on what's going on; I was really hoping to see the resolution to Tianshi's conversation with Adam and Quan. Maybe the first part of her new routine or the first official test towards being Adam's student.
Maybe that's what we're going to get next chapter.
Regardless, I eagerly await more of this arc. I can't get enough of it right now : )
No, not because it isn't possible but because Brother Hou would consider his completed project a failure because Adam's physical age IS 14 at the moment.
Soul too, only his Marital Spirit is from his main body.
So all that work, then using on Adam: "Grandpa not found!? Damn Trash Detector!"
Sigh, I wonder how many amazing things in life were missed because of issues like this.
Just because Brother Hou thinks it's trash doesn't necessarily mean others in the sect think it's trash... ** Wink, wink, nudge, nudge **
Well, this has been a fun read, I do find it hilarious, that in the avoidance of getting mixed up in any other Xianxia protags story he seems to have accidentally inserted HIMSELF as a Xianxia Protag, complete with mysterious heritage, super special cheats that everyone thinks are trash at the start, lost parents, the whole nine yards, honestly I wouldn't be shocked if at some point the Sect he's currently joining got wiped out, except I figure Simmy would warn him of that if it was likely to be a thing ahead of time
One thing I'm curious about is whether he'll break out all that interesting tech stuff he has access to... unless I'm missing something and the tech can't work in xianxia world or he doesn't have the tech knowledge due to being a reincarnation thing going on.
Nah, cultivation needs nature to be fairly intact, so no industrial pollution. And you can't really skip straight to solar and high efficiency batteries without the low stuff. Plus, why would cultivators need tech? It's not for weaponry, and computers are substituted by jade slips. Toilets would be useful, but i don't remember what Adam's bathroom is like, and running water can be achieved with formations.
Also, a lot of his tech needs his construction beams and technomancy interface for control, and he currently has no way to do that. Working his way up would also sort of defeat the purpose of being here, as it would take a lot of time and effort away from learning the superpowers of this world. Maybe in a century or 2 if he gets bored he will work his way up the tech tree without his powered interface to help.
So, I'm actually wondering if in a decade or two we'll see a group in the sect of the cultivators with lower tier martial spirits that are following him around like puppies. After all, he would have given them hope, and allowed them to follow their dreams.
I wonder if your guy will turn the world into a fascinating blend of Steam punk and xianxia. I don't think anyone has ever combined those two genres and would be fascinating and now that I think about it would blend surprisingly well together.
probably because generally they don't work together, what with one needing to not have massive amount of pollution mucking up the various magic herbs and the like growing and the other tending to pump it out far faster then is healthy.
You can always substitute the polluting aspects of it with Qi Formations, such as a water heating formation for a boiler. Maybe even a self sustaining internal combustion engine with a water molecule splitting formation when you get to that level of knowledge? Just pump the "exhaust" (which would be pure water) back into the formation and then pump the gasses back into the engine. So long as the area isn't starved from Qi it can run perpetually, and if that happens you could probably power it with your personal Qi reserves, something that works on such a small amount\scale couldn't be that power hungry.
A bit, yeah. To be fair, the notes on the surface stuff even EXPLAIN that it is designed to be pretty and maybe sort of explode horrendously if anyone tried to copy and ACTIVATE that particular formation.
And while it won't be in the story, the real reason he added the junk on the outside was that without those marks, they just looked like boring pipes. Adam wanted them to look 'cool.'
But it's also true that, like every 6 y.o. knows, looking cool makes stuff work way better! That's why racing cars with stripes and flames go faster!
