I was gonna include that but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't get that. I'm pretty sure that usually a "creation" god "directly" creates things, for example creating the first fire, plants or even other gods depending on their power level, while a "craft" god is more like Hephaestus or Athena, they make things using materials and forges or looms, rather than just willing something into existence. Apeiron, while he might be able to do similar things and mimic this using FMA Alchemy and the Micromanipulators, is ultimately still following the rules of a crafting god.
Think of it like this a creation god makes things like this:
Input:Thinks of what they want to create
Output: The thing they want to create is formed
While a craft god makes things like this:
Input: Designing object
Process: Manufacturing
Output: Item is forged/woven/whatever
I just had an idea. Tetra can emulate technology. She can emulate technology as complex as a magitek lazer. How come she hasn't emulated a speaker yet? If she can emit infrared waves that most likely means she can emit the entire electromagnetic spectrum. So she should be able to generate electricity. And a speaker just converts an electric signal into noise. Voila, a talking Tetra. Or maybe she doesn't even need to get that complicated. She could just vibrate the membrane of the speaker by herself. Moving membrane=moving air= sound. Since Tetra is as advanced as an AI she should be able to vibrate just right to create a voice.
Also, does anyone know if Kill la Kill ever explained how that one sailor suit talked to the main character? Does Tetra need to become a Kamui before she can speak like that?
I know that Joe wouldn't be a "conventional" deity but if he did become one what could his domains be? So far I've thought of: Contracts, Technology, Science, Forging, Alchemy and maybe Spiral(?)
Also does anyone know if PtV has autopilot if Contessa used it to do surgery other things that need very precise movements or does she have to do that herself?
I'm pretty sure that Peter would be a god of Shelter. Probably also Nurture. Maybe Social Contracts specifically. All things that he himself has only really gotten himself recently and become a utter font of whenever possible.
In her cape life, Canon!Taylor don't bunker down, she rush into the danger without any plan (unless Tatte made one for her). See... most of Worm really, but Lung is the best example. That's in part because she is depressed, in part because she's stubborn, and in part because of a sunken cost fallacy.
In her civilian life, she let her problems fester... but I guess you could call that "bunker down" as Joe is pretty much doing the same thing (through Joe is getting better, thanks to his therapist).
She bunkered down either on the doorstep or inside of the home of her enemies until she could murder the crap out of them. See Coil, see the Protectorate, see Alexandria even, and finally see Zion. I think that Taylor even got a few shanks in on him with the Nanothorn dagger before she really went all Khepri on his ass. Inhaled Entity Avatar dust and everything.
Also, does anyone know if Kill la Kill ever explained how that one sailor suit talked to the main character? Does Tetra need to become a Kamui before she can speak like that?
I think it's explained in the anime that the suit can only talk to the main character because she is a life fiber hybrid. Which is also how Tetra is able to talk to Joe since he is a life fiber hybrid now. Her becoming a Kamui wouldn't change anything since no one else is a life fiber hybrid.
To open with some bad news, not a delay, but I am not going to have time to get the Chubster interlude ready for this week. I'm didn't get any writing done last night and have a busy few days ahead of me. I could probably rush something out, but with the unironic enthusiasm associated with this chapter I want to do my best that I can. There will still be a chapter this week, a mini-interlude of the preamble that was cut from the last chapter. If I have time I might be able to add another small section to it, but the Chubster interlude will be delayed until next week.
Seeing as Tybalt is Tybalt's real name, Kreig wouldn't be using it (because he doesn't know it) but rather his cape name: Kataclysm or however it's spelled.

(So, what if Joe ended up as a member of the Ambassadors? This takes place in the early, early days of Joe's cape career, at some nebulous point in time after meeting the Undersiders.)
The silence after a couple hours of hearing the Endbringer Sirens was deafening. Tattletale felt herself sweating slightly under her newly improved equipment, feeling the winds changing as her Shard kept whispering in the back of her mind about the changes in weather patterns, the rain hitting the entire city like a wave of moving water from the skies. Once again, for the third time, she shivered in the cold. Where was J-Apeiron? Even her mind switched to his Cape-Name, the futility of how little she realized she knew about Joe. Her Shard was, frankly, less-than-useless on him now and likely had been since the start. As Dragon's Armbands began to inform them of Leviathan's arrival, the clouds parted as a screeching noise of metal and DEATH and HARVEST cut through her mind like butter.
This must be Omake day. I couldn't get my idea about Theo's trigger being interrupted like Jozef's was out of my head, so here it is. Unfortunately, no guarantee about quality..
Joe will be able to answer the question about the Knightly House with the knowledge from Technical Training, but that's just understanding the context and answering the question. With Arch-Magos he'll be able to properly found a new knightly house with all appropriate honors and traditions.
I really didn't think his catalepsean would be named from Warhammer 40k. Maybe coincident so LordR doesn't need to explain it. Maybe a bleed from 40Kverse or Armsmaster is actually a fan of 40K.
If Coil was to leak E88s identities then he could easier blame it on Apeiron now than before. Though his profile doesn't suggest that he would do such a thing.
The captalepsean node was named after the catalepsy condition, so in this case you have Armsmaster using the same origin for his own terminology. And it is also convenient shorthand for what the system actually does.
QUESTION:
For Tybalt, what divine blessings does the feline demigod possess?
You mentioned a minor knack for necromancy (a gift from Hades?), and the comment about "security procedures" sounds like a blessing from Hermes the god of thieves.
Not sure if Aphrodite's blessing would improve the aesthetic of military presentation, i.e. "beauty in warfare" or "beautiful combatant".
Tybalt only has divine abilities associated with his divine heritage and legendary training. His powers are based on Ares and are fairly strong and broad, but he doesn't have any additional blessings from other gods. If Joe got Glory to the Legion he could share his own blessings with Tybalt, but until then Tybalt is limited to his demigod powers.
The necromancy comes from Ares being associated with the dead of the battlefield. In Percy Jackson he can summon the ghosts of defeated soldiers and that ability extends to Tybalt as well. It's not as strong as Hades' power over the dead, but it's still useful, and is enhanced by his Legendary Implement (the helmet).
What? Those costumes were a delicate balance of suspension of disbelief against implied catlike features against uncanny valley. And iconic as all fuck.
To clarify, the movie was a reference to the proposed traditionally animated version of Cats that was going to be made in the early 90s by Amblin Entertainment. Don Bluth wasn't attached, but it was definitely in his style. The movie was never made, allegedly because of the poor performance of Amblin's other animated movie "We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story". This was a shame, because some of the concept art for the film was really beautiful.
It was going to be set in London's theater district right after the second world war and seemed to put a lot of work into capturing the feel and tone of that kind of environment. Details of the project were circulated after the disaster of Cats 2019 in a 'what could have been' kind of thing. In the context of this story the film was made on Earth Bet and became a widely loved classic. Of course, because you can't have anything remain untainted in Worm, a version of the 2019 Cats movie was made ten years earlier, with worse technology but largely the same style and production decisions. (It would be what Tom Hooper made instead of Les Misérables) It was not well received and is widely regarded to be part of some kind of Simurgh plot.
Hahaha I AM NOSTRADAMUS!! An early comment I made a reference to the tonal architecture wielded by the Dwemer which is basically manipulating reality through sound. Of course tonal architecture isn't something most fans of Elder Scrolls know so it's probably a reference to thu'um so just incase @LordRoustabout
Also the Numidium aka The Brass God was built with tonal architecture by manipulating the Heart of Lorkhan using Kagrenac's tools which the Tribunal used to grant themselves divinity.
Joe's access to the metaphysics of the Elder Scrolls and his Unnatural Skill with music is enough for him to recognize that Tonal Architecture is a thing, but not enough to give him any proficiency with it. He will be working from first principles and be limited to what he can accomplish with his supporting perks. It will take a long time to actually see results in that area, but the research should help in his development of other Elder Scrolls magic principles.
Since there's no sequence for jumps ordering which one comes before or after others, the integration of robotic components into his body doesn't trigger for anything that wasn't purchased in the Mega Man Zero jump. At the moment that's limited to his warning system. His neural implant from Halo and any future cybernetics will remain in their standard form rather than be converted to biological equivalents.
To dock the Death Star Joe would either need The Big Garage (a 300 point upgrade that could dock any size vessel) or seven purchases of Additional Space (at 200 points each), which would let Joe park the Death Star or even Death Star 2 in one of his standard bays. When something is parked in the garage it can be refueled in a reasonable amount of time. There are no precise guidelines for this, but the fittings would adapt to the most optimal form to facilitate refueling. Basically, Joe could 'fill up' the Death Star as quickly as it would be possible to do so under optimal conditions.
Actually, does Chen's uniform provide permanent upgrades even when one takes it off? I mean, it gives you anime-physic powers when worn, but does the Life Fibre infusion mean that even a temporary wearer would get extremely fit and have their body slightly upgraded by the Life Fibre evolution/mutation?
Because that would be really useful for Joe. He could make a set of training clothes, lend it to someone for a day, have them run around and play in an obstacle course or something, and at the end of the day give it back while being instantly fit. Taylor did ask for some way to train her body, and while Joe definitely isn't going to give her an uniform that gives you superpowers, he might be okay with something that 'only' pushes you to 'Olympic level athlete'. Would be a nice but non-invasive thing for Aisha as well.
From Kill la Kill we can see the effects of a one-star uniform set in the moment it is put on, and fade immediately when it is removed. The bulk of the benefits would be limited to when the costume was being worn, but there are some additional points. Life Fibers encourage evolution in lifeforms they interact with. Exposure to the uniform alters genetics, meaning Chen would be slowly trending in that direction. This is normally an extremely slow process, but the costume is massively enhanced by other perks and also has Heretical Adaptation.
Additionally, there are mundane benefits to the physical enhancement that persist. A one-star uniform would allow a person to work out at higher levels without damaging their body. It wouldn't take them to superhuman levels, but they could get the benefit of very high level training with no drawbacks or concerns about injury.
Nah, Aura doesn't unlock by accident like that. In RWBY, it can happen when people are exposed to enough danger that their Aura awakens to protect them, but that isn't the case here in Worm otherwise the recent incident with Lung would've been grounds for this popping up all over the place. If Mei and Jun's Auras are to be awakened, it has to be intentional on his part.
Actually, in retrospect that would interesting won't it? Aura is in essence a kinder version of Parahuman powers, with its own variety of "Triggers" and individual power expressions but doesn't come with a space whale attached and could be awakened without traumatizing people.
Eight volumes of RWBY and we still don't have a clear answer about how Aura awakens. This is an old rant, but when you need to go to supplemental material for basic elements of the world and still don't have basic concepts fully explained that is not good worldbuilding.
The closest thing I've seen to Aura activating under pressure was Ren's when he protected himself and Nora from Grimm as a child. It's not clear if that was his Aura, or just discovery of his semblance. If not for Pyrrha unlocking Jaune's Aura in the first volume we would have almost nothing to go on. The other characters never talk about awakening their Auras or the training involved or challenges that they had. All stuff that is basically free characterization, but has gone untouched.
Cutting things off before they become too negative, for the purposes of this story, you need to have your Aura unlocked by someone who knows the process. It can either be through the ritual or a longer training process, but assistance is needed. Just having Aura doesn't mean you can unlock someone else's, you need to understand the process. Right now the only two people with enough knowledge to manage that are Joe and Tybalt. You aren't going to have spontaneous Aura unlocks in random corners of the planet just because Aura was introduced as a concept, just like you aren't going to have people independently discovering FMA alchemy just because it's a science in the world. You need to get it from Joe, from someone Joe instructed, or through study of the effect in action.
What I wonder is how long it will take Survey to sniff out Coil in the PRT network. Given that Apeiron gave her permission to go nuts and the duplicates would support her if she encountered any obstacles (and she just spent an entire week searching for Marchs network), I would assume that she can subverttthe entire ENE department before the day is over. That also extends to the classified documentation of the Call-Bead-Incident.
@LordRoustabout One idea I had to reign in repeatable perks: Increase the CP needed to trigger a purchase with every successful roll without increasing the price. That way most perks will stall out somewhere around 600 CP.
I'm not going to change the way I handle perks at the moment, but this is a pretty good idea for future stories that are looking at infinitely repeatable perks. Rather than increase the cost of the perk I would increase the cluster. Essentially, the first purchase would be for 100 points. The second would be for 200 and get you two copies of the repeated perk, the next for 300 with three copies, 400 for four, and so on. You'd be looking at the Triangular number progression, meaning you would probably stall at 600 points after 21 copies of the perk. The downside is the fact that multiple copies of a cheaper perk aren't as good as a single more expensive one. Even six minor blessings don't approach the level of a 600 point perk. Really, there are a lot of ways the Forge can be balanced, so it comes down to what works for your story.
The Fallen London universe has a lot of fun stuff in there. Souls are just scratching the surface.
So here's some quick omake ideas:
1. Joe actually taking some time to finally deal with the mess of Implications that are Neathy colors and then making something fun with them. Irrigo or violant smokebombs for example.
2. Joe taking the time to piece together the Shapeling Arts and experiment with them. Also teaching Aisha how to do it and let her Ascend the Chain. THUS ARE WE SHAPEDE
3. Joe paying attention to the burning characters on his infernal mail and figuring out that there's quite a bit more behind it and that it's not just a passing curiosity. Law Furnace pog
4. Joe randomly getting a 1200CP set of Fallen London perks (Great Mind + Master Academic (picking the Red Science as Expertise) + Correspondence Course) and not just bending the Laws of Nature, but making new ones wholesale since there are absolutely 0 Judgments in Wormverse to stop him. The Correspondence can be used to counter entropy, so that would be fun. Also, the reactions of people when Lead Chimpanzee announces that he is going to be in charge of the local reality's stability and Laws from now on. "Oh, PRT just pushed through a law that I must cease and desist? Hold on, let me just quickly make a Law that parahuman powers not approved by the Celestial Forge will no longer work."
1. Once Joe fully attains Mental Fortress he will be immune to the mental effects of the Neathbow colors. That doesn't make them harmless since they still have significant effects on reality, but it does mean he can work with them normally, instead of forgetting everything the moment he turns away from anything Irrigo.
2. This is going to be a bit tricky. Joe has no training in Shapeling Arts, so he's going to have to work everything out for himself. Most of his science perks are of minimal help since the work isn't exactly following natural laws. His Unnatural Skills and blessings mean it's at least possible, but he will probably need a few more to be able to do anything significant with the vital essence in the amber.
3. Fallen London specifically requires the Correspondence Course perk for the Correspondence to retain its full power after the jump. Without that perk most of the higher level uses are locked out, leaving the burning aspect of the language as its main feature. Fortunately, Joe can afford to be a lot more cavalier about using the Correspondence than most people would. His divine nature protects him against the worst levels of heat the language can put out and once he gets Mental Fortress he'll be insulated from any psychological damage that the study could bring. It has the potential to be an incredibly energetic effect, particularly when applied to music. Unfortunately, without supporting perks he can't take it further. No Red Science or Law Furnaces for him.
4. This is full omake territory, but an entertaining situation to be sure. If the prerequisites weren't so extreme there could be a case for including Correspondence Course or even some of the other Wash of Daylight perks in the Capstone constellation. Unfortunately, with each of them requiring mastery of a Job and Quality (totaling 1000 points in perks) its not something I want to get into.
@LordRoustabout is this new "Garage" connected to his other "Garage" he acquired from the Fast and Furious perk? Or were the two Garages merged together with one Garage being integrated into the other?
The Garage is part of the Warehouse Extensions, meaning it can either be added as part of the starting space, or attached outside that area as an independent site. So far all of Joe's warehouse attachments have been added outside of the starting space. This is arbitrary for attachments from Jumps, but for Personal Reality extensions leaving them outside the starting area means they can only store items relevant to their purpose. You can't buy an arena and use it for overflow from your warehouse. Joe had that problem with his original workshop, where anything left in there that wasn't relevant to crafting got dumped into his entryway.
The Garage is the same, so it can store vehicle related items, but not anything else. Fortunately, it's next to the Fast and Furious Garage as well as Joe's hangars and the vehicle manufacturing area of his Bubblegum Crisis, which basically open into the Garage. This means better access to the outside, as each Garage bay can be accessed directly with the Garage Door Opener, rather than needing to cycle vehicles to a single entrance.
If Joe gets enough rolls of Additional Space the extensions can be folded back into the main area, removing the storage restrictions and allowing better continuity between the sections of the workshop. Normally rearranging the Warehouse would have a cost attached to it, but I'm waving that given the random nature of how things are selected.
First Survey finding a Hobby (or just simple enjoyment) in Singing, which is just a lovely development.
I wonder what Matrix and Fleet will choose as leisure activities?
Fleet has a passion for driving and vehicle work, two things that already have active hobby communities. With greater freedom to act in the outside world he's probably going to take interest in classic car restoration, auto shows, and various racing venues. The Matrix is still developing their own personality, but with access to Joe's divine crafting it will probably be something related to craft work or design. They might grow beyond those topics, but to start they're likely to approach from a place they're familiar with, just as Survey is approaching music as a asset to be developed rather than just a pure source of enjoyment.
And why was Fleet so insistent on maintaining a stable Size ratio in his miniature/trial Vehicles?
Wouldn't it make sense to have different types of ratios for different purposes? Like transporting Celestial Forge Members through the Workshop or making a full sized race track?
The tiny vehicles are built for training and development, not any practical purpose. Joe had dedicated workshop drones capable of delivering goods, making repairs, and managing mundane workshop activities. Fleet's tiny cars and aircraft are about getting a sense for how different models perform in the field and building his drone software and coordination abilities. He wants to keep them the same scale so that the data is still useable if and when he pits them against each other.
Now with Chen out there what are the chances of Aura being spread? Given the association I would not be the least bit surprised if Chen and his family got kidnapped by the Slaughterhouse 9 in their attempt to make an even gruesomer spectacle than the Ungodly Hour or if a random Tinker/Thinker scans Chen by accident (or even by purpose) and finds out about that weird energy field and then reverse-engineered it or something.
There is very little information on Chen. The public isn't even sure if he survived. There isn't a specific account of his death, but things were so chaotic that nobody can be sure. The PRT have probably debriefed the gang member who was guarding him, and might have been able to piece together the fact that he was rescued, but they don't have any more to go on, and Chen's not coming forward with any information. If the Slaughterhouse Nine had information on his location they would definitely try something, probably involving his family, but Chen is a bit off their map at the moment. Additionally, even when he's not wearing the Goku uniform Chen has Aura with its danger sense and can instantly summon his weapon. He's hardly helpless and Jack wouldn't be getting any Shard warnings ahead of time.
That weapon is really spectacularly dangerous, particularly to the Slaughterhouse Nine. The sword is built with technology based on Vista power, which is one of the few things that can affect the Siberian. The pistol and spear use the same tech, while the rifle hits like a Warhammer 40,000 lascannon. Bonesaw's augmentations and Mannequin's armor would be meaningless. Cherish and Crawler are really the only two who could deal with Chen in a straight fight. Unless the Slaughterhouse Nine managed to engineer a hostage situation before Chen saw them coming they would have an exceptionally bad time.
Next week Chubster Interlude. YEEEAAAHHH I'M HYPED!!! Wohooo.
The fact that the Idea for it came up because someone was too salty because some Interludes only gave different Perspectives, Ideals, Thoughts and Situations to an already explored Premise rather than being entirely new Content is just Perfection.
Hopefully LordRoustabout will properly explore it because I'd rather wait another week and have a 20k upwards chapter that fully explores the wider Protectorate Cape Community and Chubsters Thought Processes rather than a rushed 10k plus Prelude. The amount of Potential seems massive.
As I mentioned above, this is unfortunately what we're looking at. There will still be a short interlude this week, but I'm taking some extra time to make sure the Chubster chapter is up to snuff.
Wow. Like, wowza. Everything in the story has been accomplished in two weeks? that's... I don't know how I feel about it. On the one hand, given the whole Jumpchain thing, I suppose it makes sense that Joe could ramp up that fast. On the other hand, it feels like way too short of a time span. With that context in mind, Joe has had almost no downtime from major conflict to major conflict.
It's also making me wonder what's gonna happen by the end of week three. Will Aisha become fully transhuman? Will Apeiron make nice with the PRT and the Protectorate? Will Vista confront Apeiron? Will Joe finally unlock Mixing Mixtures and the rest of the Star Trek Knowledge Perks?
This is something that's started to hit home with the people who've lived through the events of the past ten days. You basically had March pushing the expanded ABB to the limit with rapid fire strikes and Joe as the only person who could keep up and escalate ahead of her. Joe knows how hard the pace of things has been for the city, which was why he was pushing for a period of peace. Fortunately, the rest of the gangs lack a timing and logistics thinker and actually take time to mobilize. Even their planned actions against the Teeth will take a few days to get rolling, as will anything the Teeth are planning in response.

-Lost Garden active in Brockton Bay
-Travelers active in Brockton Bay
-Dragonslayers active in Brockton Bay
-The Teeth active in Brockton Bay
-Celestial Forge debuts
Empire begins withdrawing from area bordering former ABB territory
These are just the public events that everyone knows about (more or less). The pace of disasters was very much the reason for Apeiron taking the position of nothing getting in the way of recovery efforts or impacting the civilian population. The city has had enough, and the presence of five or six new parahuman groups (Depending on whether the Elite count) isn't going to calm anyone's nerves, particularly when one of them in Apeiron's own team. Unfortunately, given the situation the peace will probably only last as long as it takes the gangs to reorganize and rearm, or some third party enters the fray.
Well, there had been one over on the old Discord server, but I know it had been stopped and perhaps even deleted quite some time before we lost that server. For some reason the Garden never caught on with other authors. Myself, I am very interested in plant based superpowers, but unfortunately I am familiar with very few of the jumps the Garden of Eternity draws from.
LordRoustabout's diary must have it's own library if the pace is the same as this story, LoL. Imagine taking 7 weeks to write 1 day of your daily life. Commendable.
It has been said before but I'll say it here as well, the amount of stuff that went down is actually pretty similar to how much when down in canon, Taylor went out, nearly died to Lung later on met the Undersiders, tries to convince Armsmaster to let her do undercover work then the bank heist which is immediately followed by ABB constricts and Bakuda's bombing with said mad woman intentionally going after the Undersiders with the aid of L33T and Uber
Took a moment to visit the Worm Wiki Timeline -
April 10th-11th
Taylor finishes her costume and heads out. She finds group of gangsters from the Azn Bad Boys, as well as their boss, Lung, and attacks them.[185][186]
Bakuda's bombing starts. Using bombing as a distraction, Oni Lee releases Lung.[194]
(Between April 14th and April 22nd) The Travelers hired by Coil.[195][196]
(Between April 15th and April 22nd) Bitch attacks dog fighting ring.[197][198]
That Alone is 10 day's which I think is the same time frame that all of the Celestial Forge's events have taken place within (It might of been longer but I don't think it has even been 20 day's yet), The impact of Aperion is felt and shown as his presence cause Bakuda to act earlier.
Canon Timeline continues as shown below
April 23rd
Brockton Bay supervillains meet at Somer's Rock and make an alliance against Azn Bad Boys.[199][200]
That lead's us to the same date as the timeline Lord has revealed in his latest update, however it is interesting to note the Somer's Rock meeting in canon took place a day earlier, overall both in this story and canon the event's that occur happen at a frankly ridiculous pace giving next to nobody any breathing room which as Lord as stated Aperion noticed was partly behind his reasoning for a truce to allow the city to recover.
Furthermore for anyone interested in Canon a mere 21 day's after the Somer's Rock meeting is the May 15th... The day Leviathan visit's the bay.

Considering Joe's growth and rate of building, in 21 days he will be able to take all 20 or so endbringers on at once while having casual conversation on the side.
One of the gym members had approached Joe during the bakery competition following the attack by Bakuda. "Hey, Joe." The man looked uncomfortable, having not really spoken to Joe before. The man had only recently started joining the gym a couple weeks ago. Joe looked at him, waiting for him to ask or say something. "Do you think you can meet my kid?" The man asked gruffly. "He's really into cars and I'm not the best on that kinda stuff since I usually do electrical work." Joe nodded and the man told him their address, relief on his face, saying he could come on by at Thursday around 1 or 2 in the afternoon.
After confirming that he was close to the address and that it was still a go, Joe reluctantly went. Survey, Matrix, even Tybalt pushed for him to go spend time outside the Workshop. He approached the building, frowning. The apartment complex looked rather old, but was mostly untarnished as it was a few blocks from the hospital.
Entering and heading up the elevator, Joe found himself looking at the apartment door, 327, and knocked. The door opened to reveal a little old lady with grey hair beaming up at him. "You must be Joe!" She chirped, waving him to come in. Joe quietly entered as she shut the door behind him. "Jacob's been so excited to meet you." She said cheerfully. "He's usually going on about Apeiron this and that. He keeps on looking at him as a Real Hero compared to the PRT."
"Kids, what're you gonna do? They make up their own minds and never let anyone tell them otherwise." She said wistfully.
After being taken past the living room, Joe felt a little uncomfortable seeing the gym member kneeling and playing cars next to a young kid, looking roughly six or seven. The gym member looked up and coughed sheepishly as he got up. "Hey, Jake, this is my buddy from the gym. He knows Everything about cars." He 'whispered' to Jacob, whose eyes lit up as he shot up to say hi after stumbling for a bit.
Joe found himself bemused and blindsided by the kid rambling on about different engines and models. Joe kept along, nodding and offering ideas as Jacob beamed happily. "I'd love to meet Apeiron. His motorcycle turned into a Transformer!" He announced loudly, wistfully. He scrolled on his phone, showing the PHO website and the videos of Apeiron's equipment.
After a couple hours, they were interrupted by the little old lady who looked at Joe, pleased. "Hey, Jacob, I think Joe might want something to eat and our oven isn't working right? Will some pizza work?" She asked, grinning as Jacob shouted happily. "Pizza! Heck yeah grandma!" She nodded at Joe toward the kitchen for him to follow.
"Thank you for spending time with him. I haven't seen him so happy in a long time." She said quietly, after setting down the phone for ordering pizza. "He hasn't had anyone treating him like a normal kid for a while now outside of my son and I." Joe felt a chill going down his spine and he stared at her, concern and silent questions bubbling to his lips but not willing to say anything. She paused. "You didn't know." She whispered. "You didn't know and you came anyway." Joe hesitantly nodded. "Brain cancer. Incurable. No surgery with the hospital full of the victims of the bombings. The doctors say he has likely less than few weeks left." She said softly. Her eyes remained dry, but Joe could see that wasn't from a lack of crying. Likely because she had cried all the tears she had left. "Thank you Joe. You're a good man. You don't have to stay unless you want to." She said kindly.
Joe stayed. He sent a quick text to the Workshop and stayed for hours, leaving after the sun had set in the dark. Walking silently in the night back to his own apartment, he entered the Workshop, sat next to his computer, and cried. Cried and held his hands to his face as he never felt he hated Bakuda and himself more.
Tybalt yowled, and Joe could barely blink past his own tears as he saw Tybalt, Garment, Survey, and Matrix all looking very concerned for him and crowded around him with worry. Joe couldn't even pretend to be okay, couldn't even explain himself.
There was no explaining. They didn't ask or demand or need him to. They just took him to the couch and let him unwind in front of a movie, with both Aisha and Tybalt curling on either side of him. Sometimes in life, it was the little things that mattered, Joe felt himself dozing into sleep.
Jacob looked super happy the next morning to see a small replica of Apeiron's motorcycle-Transformer, showing it off to his dad and grandma. They smiled happily for him. The gym member returned to the gym and nodded to Joe in thanks, never saying a word as he went back to pulling weights. No words were needed.
Because sometimes in life, it's the little things.
[Okay, I know there's inconsistencies and the timeline doesn't add up, but I did meet a kid with cancer who passed away. The kid wanted to be an inventor, and honestly I think he'd have loved to read the Celestial Forge. Jacob, this is for you, buddy.]
That lead's us there lead's us to the same date as the timeline Lord has revealed in his latest update, however it is interesting to note the Somer's Rock meeting in canon took place a day earlier, overall both in this story and canon the event's that occur happen at a frankly ridiculous pace giving next to nobody any breathing room which as Lord as stated Aperion noticed was partly behind his reasoning for a truce to allow the city to recover.
Brockton's Bay was always a powder keg, Joe is simply a bigger match than Taylor.
To be fair, Joe made it worst by... saying he was okay with the other branch of the PRT. Which is why they sent Flechette (to recruit that potential healer), which made March migrate to the city, and the rest is history.
Lord was always fairly open about the Chubster interlude being on the table. Here's Lord's legendary rant:
I know, Chubster, right? Who would want to read about him? I mean, a look at the mindset of Ben Cothran, Los Angeles protectorate member and S-class responder? What could possibly be interesting or insightful about that? Why would I spend time from the perspective of someone who devoted themselves to fighting the worst disasters in the world could while also working directly under Alexandria, a member of the Triumvirate and secret director of the PRT? What could a man who saw the highest level of combat but also maintained enough humor and grace to maintain a joke cape name say about the situation in Brockton Bay? What could a divorced father who's only daughter was head of the LA Wards team think about the conduct of young parahumans in a disaster area on the other side of the country? Why would I bother any of that?
Okay, enough sarcasm. I get people are tired of interludes and want to move on. I'm going to be trying that with the next chapter, and am hoping to have the situation wrapped up within the next two. I'm not actually going to write a 20,000 word Chubster interlude out of spite, but the idea did get more appealing the more I though about it to the point where we might check in with Ben at some point in the future.
(Author's note: Shorter chapter this week. I needed to cut a planned preamble due to limited writing time. The preamble will be included in next weeks chapter, a long awaited interlude set outside of Brockton Bay.)
Considering Joe's growth and rate of building, in 21 days he will be able to take all 20 or so endbringers on at once while having casual conversation on the side.
The fact that the Idea for it came up because someone was too salty because some Interludes only gave different Perspectives, Ideals, Thoughts and Situations to an already explored Premise rather than being entirely new Content is just Perfection
CHUBSTER INTERLUUUUUDE!! Seriously, LR's description of the character, IIRC a veteran cape who started as an independent, joined the Protectorate, and has a daughter in the Wards, turned a joke into an in depth view of the larger cape community's thoughts on BB.
The highest compliment I can give to Lord here is that in any other story, I would expect the, unfortunately now delayed, Chubster interlude to end with the Endbringer sirens because Eldion's ego is feeling bruised from whatever the main character just did. This would inevitably be followed by the main character showing up to the fight, and reinforcing how cool they are by one-uping him. But instead, you seem to be following canon guidelines and consistencies for motivations with reasonable actions, which will make the eventual battle much more interesting.
