Against the sea of stars, a bright flash interrupted the steady twinkle of the heavens. Dragging trails of light, a Federation Akira-class starship screeched to a stop from high warp, its warp nacelles dimming as its own crimson impulse engines brightened, pushing the craft slowly into the home system of the latest Federation member, the Kerbal Union. Their homeworld, Kerbin, was a miniature Class-M planet, similar to Earth in color. Orbiting the blue and green sphere were thousands of orbital stations, satellites, and small impulse ships. Travelling between the many orbital stations spread throughout the systems were ships of all sizes, ferrying Kerbals from destination to destination. The Kerbal Union had experienced a rapid expansion after working through their bumpy space program, and developed their first Warp ship a mere year ago, and had joined the Federation but a month ago.

The approaching Akira-class ship, the USS Yukikaze proudly emblazoned on its hull, gently soared into Munar orbit, escorted by two small Kerbal impulse interceptors, old improvised warships from their Duna Rebellion War. They were equipped with a small battery of missiles, conventional explosives that couldn't hope to harm the Yukikaze, but the Federation starship was not here to hurt, but to help.

On the Bridge of the Yukikaze, the Captain, a man named Ramirez, told his crew to accept a hail from Kerbin proper.

The little green man that appeared onscreen (with a disproportionately large head) greeted Ramirez with great enthusiasm.

"Ah, Captain," the Universal Translator interpreted his Kerbal yammering, "It is a pleasure to see you and your ship here so soon. We didn't even begin to worry that you'd be late."

Ramirez gave the Kerbal a cordial smile, "Yes, our ships can be quite fast when they want to be. Has there been a change since you notified us of the situation?"

The Kerbal shook his head, "No. We are ready to proceed with the operation. Will your ship be directly observing?"

Ramirez shook his head, "No, we won't. In fact, it's best if we stay as far away as possible, until we have a better idea of what we're facing. I've deactivated our Warp Drive for now, but I don't want to test fate."

"I see," the Kerbal replied.

"I will, however, be sending two of my officers in a shuttle to observe the operation. They will rendezvous with your forces at Duna in one hour," Ramirez informed his contact, "Yukikaze out."

The Shuttle Bay was fairly empty, save the crewman in the control room. The shuttle was ready, and the doors slid open as a Lieutenant Commander Karen Chen ran through, blurting, "I'm sorry I'm late! I-"

She then trailed off. There was no one here.

"Oh," she looked around. Wasn't Dr. Hubbard supposed to meet her here?

Well, she guessed that she was early for a change.

She then trailed off. There was no one here.

"Oh," she looked around. Wasn't Dr. Hubbard supposed to meet her here?

Well, she guessed that she was early for a change.

Dr. Hubbard was not at the shuttle bay. He was busy in the sick bay treating ..... What was his patient name? Let's go with Red Shirt. All these red shirts were so interchangeable. Now where was he?

"So Dr. Hubbard, I appreciate you taking time to look over my case, but I don't understand. You are saying I have ..... a STD, but I....."

"Yes, yes, your symptoms were most intriguing green bumps on your.... Johnson. I am actually quite impressed. Normally, this disease is found in the Orion race, but your genetic make-up has the right combination that the virus could jump on to you, or perhaps the virus mutated. Anyway, you are the first recorded case of this disease in a human. As a result, there isn't a easy cure. What is used for the Orion race doesn't necessary apply to human's but....."

"No easy cure..... but......"

"What your STD is not going to spread beyond your Johnson, and I am not going to tell anyone. I mean unless you are dating someone......"

The red shirt let out the most pitiful whimper, not too dissimilar to a dog being neutered.

"Pft hahahahahahaha. Well, I am sorry. I actually have a bio mechanical substitute that looks anatomically identical to the real thing in case you need a substitute. I mean you will have to go under the knife....."

"Please take this seriously Dr. Hubbard. This is no laughing matter. "

"I am actually serious. I got my PhD. researching prosthetic with a full nervous interlace," mid-speech the PA started blaring.

"Dr. Hubbard please report to The Shuttle Bay. Please report to The Shuttle Bay."

"Oh, I figured I was forgetting something. Anyway give it some thought." Dr. Hubbard lazily walked over to the cabinet grabbing some a tub of ointment. "Anyway, here is some ointment just to treat the itching and base symptoms. It should work, but we are in uncharted territory here. Let me know if you see any other side effects. Anyway, give your options some thought. I will see you same time next week....." Dr. Hubbard spent a moment trying to remember the Red Shirt's name. Before giving up and awkwardly , shuffling out the doors, and to The Shuttle Bay.

Dr. Hubbard noticed Lt. Commander Chen already at the Shuttle. A few crewmen gave him dirty looks. Was he really that late? Well whatever not like their opinion mattered.

"Sorry for being late. What did I miss?"

"Oh, nothing yet, Doctor," Karen gave the ship's chief medical officer a smile. He may be a bit... odd, but he was a good doctor.

Opening the shuttle door, she climbed in and began starting up the systems.

"Ok," Dr. Hubbard awkwardly shuffled into the door. He watched Karen turning on the system.

'Come to think of it, what was the purpose of this away mission?' Dr. Hubbard pondered as he began flipping through his recent memories. Too his immense dismay, Dr. Hubbard's brain seemed to be lacking the relevant detail.

"So Dr. Chen, what do you think about our operation with the Kerbal Union? Personally, I find how human the Kerbal species look intriguing. In fact, this seems to be a recurring theme with new sentient lifeforms that we meet. Oh dear, look at me rambling…." Dr. Hubbard lazily waved.

"I find it quite interesting," Karen nodded as she sent the hangar doors the command to open, "An anomaly that causes the destruction of large subspace signatures? If it's isolated, it could be a mere curiosity, but something like that could mean the end of Warp travel! The possibilities are intriguing."

She began to gently ease the shuttle out of the hangar, humming to herself as the impulse engines kicked in.

"Ah yes, do you have any theories on the nature of this anomaly that is causing these destructions of subspace?" Dr. Hubbard tapped his lip in deep thought as the shuttle began its journey

"I profess I am not exactly familiar with that field of study, but is it even possible for normal space to exist without its subspace counterpart?"

"I'm not entirely sure," Karen shrugged, "but apparently it might be a creature that lives in subspace. The Kerbals were awfully cagey on its exact nature."

As the shuttle approached Duna, the outlines of various Kerbal spaceships could be seen. They were all impulse craft of differing shapes and sizes, but they were all rather small compared to Federation craft. In fact, none of them were even close to the size of a Nova-class. However, a large subspace field generator sat a short distance from them. It was the size of an Intrepid-class, at least. It was, at the moment, powered down.

Although Duna was a near dead-ringer for Mars, it played host to no shipyards, merely large stations housing research personnel, along with a section that served as a transit hub. Duna was moderately colonized, but was nowhere near done with its terraforming.
Which was perhaps why the fleet was so odd.

Kerbals did not often wage war. Their last one, the Duna Rebellion War which ended a decade ago. involved many different ships with retrofitted and often improvised weaponry. After the war, most of their fleet had been disarmed, but all the ships here were armed in some fashion.
To get so many combat vessels, the Kerbals must have pulled every ship at their disposal to this location. Compared to most of the Federation, Kerbal weaponry was simple. Most were kinetic weaponry, while a small amount of laser weaponry could be found on their newer ships.

Still, the shuttle's sensors read every ship in that fleet as armed. It would have been enough to make the NX-01 reconsider engaging. What had they amassed so much firepower for?

"Fleet One to shuttlecraft," came a high-pitched communication, "Shuttlecraft, do you copy?"

"I'm not entirely sure," Karen shrugged, "but apparently it might be a creature that lives in subspace. The Kerbals were awfully cagey on its exact nature."

"A creature that lives in subspace eh? There have been papers on hypothesizing such a being. It is theoretically possible, but given the warped nature of subspace. Any creature that could manifest would be truly alien to us. It may not even share our perceptions of time and space almost like a Lovecraftian nightmare, " as Dr. Hubbard finished his little lecture, he turned toward the sensor readings.

"Well whatever this anomaly is, the Kerbals seem to be prepared for a fight. In fact, I believe this is the largest gathering of force for the Kerbals since the Duna rebellion,"

"Fleet One to shuttlecraft," came a high-pitched communication, "Shuttlecraft, do you copy?"

"Yes, Fleet One, we copy. This is Chief Medical Dr. Robert Hubbard and Chief Engineer Dr. Karen Chen reporting. Permission to approach?" Dr. Hubbard replied through the comms while the shuttle maintained a distance.

"Permission granted. Please keep your distance from the subspace field generator," came the reply as Karen maneuvered the small shuttlecraft behind the bulk of the Kerbal fleet. The ships arranged themselves into a half-spherical formation, pointing towards the field generator.

"Generator start!" came the order, and the machine hummed to life. On the shuttle's sensors, it appeared that a Warp field the size of a Constitution-class had formed.

Of course, one hadn't, but Karen realized that this was the bait.
The fleet waited in anticipation. Karen gripped the edges of the shuttle console... but nothing happened.

After a whole minute, she relaxed a bit.

"I guess it's a no-show," she muttered, right as the computer blared a warning about a subspace tear. A large one opened right below the Kerbal fleet, and shimmering tendrils of energy reached up from it, ten in total. They wrapped themselves like tentacles around the largest Kerbal ships of the line, and held them. As they did, the warships began to shake with steadily-increasing strength. Parts began flying off of them in all directions at high speeds as they were ripped apart but unseen forces.

The Kerbal fleet opened fire, but their weapons merely passed through the tendrils. Only a few lasers appeared to do anything, causing it to twitch.
Then one released the floundering artillery ship it had grasped, and lashed out at the subspace field generator.
It snapped the fragile construction in half, the twisted metal tumbling through space before exploding violently.
Seemingly satisfied, it withdrew, and the tear closed.

The whole exchange only lasted a mere ten seconds.

"So..... "Dr. Hubbard paused trying to think the correct words to break the silence "You suppose it has more tentacles like Cthulu or only ten tentacles like a squid?"

Dr. Hubbard stopped for a moment trying to process what just happened. His mind began to twist and turn at what just happened. In all of experience, he had never seen any lifeform similar to the being. He had no idea how to begin processing the phenomena. After, a few minutes, he finally begin speaking

"So, let's begin with what we know before sending our report back to the Yukikaze on today's incursion."

"One, the phenomena is attracted to large portions of Subspace."

"Two, the Phenomena exists can exists simultaneously in Subspace and real space."

"Three, It has at least 10 tentacles. Most likely it is hiding its main body in Subspace. Given the tentacle size it must be truly massive."

"Finally, kinetic weaponry is completely ineffective against it, so we would need to something that can pierce through Subspace like light or perhaps gravity to hurt it as seen with the laser effecting the tentacles."

"I believe that is all on my end. Anything else you would like to add. Dr. Chen?"

"Not... particularly," Karen frowned at the wounded Kerbal ships as they floundered in space, still shedding loose parts, "A creature that lives in subspace and only attacks when it detects a large subspace field.... Well, subspace weaponry might take it out, but we can't exactly use that."

"Yeah, don't want to create all-consuming tears in Space-time. Well, fighting isn't the only way to defeat an enemy," Dr. Hubbard flashed a bitter smirk.

"There is banishing them to the far reaches of space and ignoring the problem and doing your best to tip toe around it. Well not like I would no anything about those sorts of things," he then paused for a second, "Or perhaps, if this was a perfect world we could make friends with them. After all isn't the ultimate victory turning your enemies into your allies? Anyway, shall we report our findings back to the Yukikaze? Afterwards, we should loop back with our friends the Kerbal's to plan our next move. I am sure they have got plenty of ships in need of repairs and plenty of folks in need of treatment. "

"Agreed," Karen nodded, "Fleet One, we are returning to the Yukikaze. Do you require assistance beforehand?"

"Negative, shuttlecraft," came the reply even as a long warship failed to correct its wobbling, resulting in the craft snapping in two along its spine, "We have things under control."

"...okay," she reluctantly set the shuttle back on a course to the Mun.

"Doctor," she turned to Hubbard, "What do you know about these Kerbals?"

"Doctor," she turned to Hubbard, "What do you know about these Kerbals?"

"Kerbals have incredible high reproductive rate with a very efficient metabolism to match. The medical community was quite excited to figure out how that worked. On the other hand, they have an incredibly short life span compared to other race. Kerbals also seem to be lacking a survival instinct as some of my previous colleagues put it," Dr. Hubbard paused pondering his own memories.

"But, their ability to work together and the relatively few wars in their history speaks volumes of their cooperative capability especially compared to humans, and certainly, their bravery is not too be doubted given today's performance." As he finished his statement, Dr. Hubbard noticed the Yukikaze pop up on the radar.

"Well, it seems like we are almost home."

"Yukikaze, this is the shuttle, we're coming home," Karen signaled the docking control as they approached the rear of the cruiser. As they touched down, the computer chimed, notifying them that they were requested in the conference room.

"Ah, Doctor, Chief," Captain Ramirez nodded at the two as they entered the room, "Let's hear it. What were your impressions of the anomaly?"

Beside him stood a short but composed Kerbal, likely a diplomat of some sort.

"Fighting anything that rips holes from subspace into real space can only end in trouble. The fact that its main body is hidden in subspace means that in order to deal the final blow to it we would need to something that could voyage and pursue it in subspace. Given the size of each tentacles, the main body must be truly enormous. I imagine pursuing it in subspace would end like a Japanese Hentai," Dr. Hubbard paused. He blinked a few times realizing what he just said before continuing with his speech. Hopefully, the Captain would forget about it if he bulldozed past those comments.

"I would recommend going around the problem by trying to direct it away from the system or see if we can establish some basic communications or understanding with the beast."

"I have an idea," Karen spoke up, "We can weaponize our Warp Drive against this beast. If it lives in subspace, then we can damage subspace to kill it or drive it out. Our Warp Drive already damages subspace slightly through regular use. All I have to do is remove many of the safeties and increase our output. Then we generate an inverse Warp Field in locations where we think it'll show up."

"Violence isn't my first choice," Ramirez sighed, "So Doctor, I want you to get started on a method to communicate with this beast, but given the actions already taken by the Kerbal Union, diplomacy may no longer be an option... Karen, I want you to prepare an offensive option as well."

"Yes, Captain!" Karen nodded, looking to Hubbard, "Need any assistance with your work?"

"Yes, Captain!" Hubbard nodded. He looked over to Karen. Did he need help? YES. ABSOLUTELY. How do you even figure out how to talk GIANT SPACE SQUID?

"Help would be appreciated. I am heading over to the holodeck to take look over some of the Kerbal's past encounters with the beast to see. I would appreciate it if you came along as another pair of eyes to look over the data. I am sure this of interest to you as well."

Later, on the Holodeck, a simulation of the Kerbal's first encounter with the creature was shown, extrapolated from footage taken from different angles at the time.

A large, brand new pristine cruiser with prominent Warp nacelles floated beyond the Mun. The Kerbal Union's first long-range Warp ship.
The nacelles began to glow softly as the Warp Core was brought online, and within seconds, a rift opened up under it.
A total of ten tentacles struck out and ensnared the ship, and the cruiser began shaking apart in its grasp.

The cruiser desperately tried to break free. As the tentacles dug deeper into the ship, it was clear that the new Kerbal cruiser was doomed. Rows upon rows of escape pods were launched from the vessel, but for most it was far too late. Finally with a sickening crack the Cruiser burst a cloud of debris splattered out in all directions, and the ten tentacles vanished back into subspace.

"Well, looks like a repeat of what we saw last time. It smashes the biggest subspace signature it can find and then vanishes. Computer scan for any unusual energy signatures radiating from the tentacles, or perhaps, before the tentacles appear "in response the computer recited a long list of energy signatures along with other data including amplitude, frequency, among other things. Unfortunately to Hubbard's immense dismay, he couldn't understand a single word from the computer.

"Stop. Computer. I am Medical doctor. How am I supposed to understand any of this vomit? Can you send a list to Dr. Chen and me?'" Dr. Hubbard rubbed his nasal bridge.

"Well sorting through this list is going to be a chore.... I mean the only thing it seems to respond to in this universe is subspace bubbles. Bubbles. Bubbles make waves. Warp Waves in Subspace," Hubbard tapped his chin deep in thought. "Say this may sound crazy Dr. Chen, but much like how waves of sound frequencies shouldn't Warp waves of Subspace occur at different frequencies?"

"If you're asking whether this creature can generate the exact mechanical resonance to break apart its victims, I would have to say yes," Karen replied, tapping her foot as she thought, "but the Warp Vessel seemed to react the most violently, so it's possible that this creature can resonate with the ship's subspace field frequency to achieve a sort of resonance that tears the vessel apart."

"Well, I suppose the next part would be for us to go fishing. Would it be possible for us to outfit a shuttle with a big enough subspace generator to beckon the Kraken? We could send it to the middle of nowhere and put some sensors on it to get an idea of what it is made out of, and what exactly the tentacles are doing?" Hubbard put his hand on his chin. " I believe we should call this shuttle Red Shirt."

"A disposable one-shot probe then?" Karen nodded, "I can do you one better, though. Let's take one of the warp-capable shuttles. I can overcharge the Warp Core and rig up a live data feed to our main computer. It'll only last about thirty seconds before the coils burn out and the Core breaches, but it should look as juicy as a Sovereign for that time!"

"Mmmm, Sounds juicy. Let's ask the Captain for approval. We don't want to accidentally set this off near a Kerbal patrol eh? " Hubbard smiled, "Need any help setting this up on your end?"

"Nope!" Karen shook her head, "In fact, better if I do it alone. If I screw up, I don't want the Yukikaze to lose both her Chief Engineer and her Chief Medical Officer!"

That would be rather unfortunate indeed.
