My Hero Academia, but Vlad King is assigned to teach Class 1-A for homeroom instead of 1-B, which gets Eraserhead.

Izuku gets a teacher who isn't constantly sleep-deprived, isn't a sink-or-swim mentor, and is intimately familiar with Quirks that hurt the user's body.

* No character bashing intended.

** Despite the name, I'm not planning for this to be a Dad For One story; the name is a translated Japanese idiom.

"Gah!" Izuku yelped, upon opening 1-A's door to see Katsuki and the strict boy from the Entry Exam both in his assigned class. 'The top two guys I didn't want to meet,' he bemoaned, 'not that I should've expected I'd be any luckier here than in Junior High…'

He twitched again as they both noticed him, waiting for an explosion, but it wasn't Katsuki who moved first.

"Good morning!" The strict boy approached with military-sharp movement, light shining off his glasses to obscure his eyes. "My name is Tenya Iida! I attended Somei Private Academy prior to-,"

"Y-Yeah, I heard you," Izuku interrupted. Tenya froze mid-step, his arms bent mid-swing, and Izuku realized he might have been rude again. "Sorry. I'm Izuku Midoriya. I'll be in your care, Iida-kun." 'Great, it doesn't look like he's angry,' Izuku reflected as Tenya relaxed to something like an at-ease position.

"Midoriya-kun… You realized there was another aspect to our practical exam, didn't you?"

"Huh?"

"Meanwhile, I remained wholly ignorant," Tenya continued as the rest of the class watched their back-and-forth curiously. "I apologize for misjudging you before; it seems I have much to learn, still."

"Fortunately," boomed a gruff voice as both boys jumped, "that's why you're both here."

"Ah!" Izuku spun around and immediately realized. "You! Y-You're the Blood Hero:
Vlad King! A red bodysuit, boots and gauntlets the same silver as your hair, and that faded cross-shaped scar on your cheek, you can't be anyone else!"

"Actually, I'm the Impersonator Hero: Caricapture, imitating Vlad King to see who notices," he answered.

Izuku gaped.

"R-Really?!" 'How embarrassing, I totally fell for it!' Izuku reflected, almost flailing in his dismay. 'It seems I really wasn't ready for what it means to have Pro Heroes teaching my classes!' "I- I-,"

"No, she's the homeroom teacher for 1-J this year," Vlad King informed him.

'So I was right the first time!! Aaaaahhh!!!'

"Clear the doorway, young man," Vlad King reprimanded after another moment, and Izuku realized where he was standing.

"Right! I'm very sorry," he yelped, bumping partly into the desk of a stylish blond boy as he scrambled out of the way.

"…"

"Good morning, sensei!" Tenya yelped as well, stepping from between the doorway and the teacher's desk as he gave a bow. "I-! There's no class representative, who's supposed to give the 'stand-bow-sit,' morning greeting today? Do I dare," he wondered quietly to himself as the silver-haired man stepped past, "or would it be presumptuous?"

"Homeroom hasn't begun either way, so everyone should be at ease," Vlad King commented in a voice that carried across the room. "Some lapses are excusable and even expected on the first day or two, provided you all know when to be serious."

""Y-Yes, sir!"" Everyone chorused at this ominous pronouncement.

Message delivered, the muscular pro-hero turned his attention to a stack of papers, and the students slowly relaxed again.

"…Oh! You're that boy, from the exam, with the fluffy hair and the diamond freckles and that incredible punch!"

Izuku turned back to the doorway, surprised to hear a girl's voice refer to him, (it was him, right?) and found himself facing the girl who'd rescued him from falling after he'd punched out the giant robot.

'It's the nice girl who helped me! She's talking to me!! She's really cute!!! What do I do?!?!'

"I'm so glad you passed and we're in the same class! Present Mic said you would pass when I went to… I mean, your punch was amazing, so I know this will be a good year for sure, now!"

"I… Well… It was thanks to you going to speak on my behalf…."

"Oh, you know about that? Heheheh…" The chubby brunette fidgeted with a tendril of her hair that ran down to her jaw. It sort of reminded Izuku of a beetle's mandibles, since she wore the rest of her hair short than those two frontmost locks, but since she definitely had gravity powers he didn't know where that thought came from.

After four stuttered sentences of attempting to chat, the bell for Homeroom rang, and the Blood Hero directed everyone to their seats, pointing to a directory he'd left on his desk for reference.

"Good morning, and welcome to your first day in the UA High School Heroics Program," he finally announced. "I am professionally the Blood Hero: Vlad King, but in the classroom you may address me as Kan-sensei. In addition to teaching homeroom, I will be the instructor for your health and gym classes, which will involve topics such as first aid, bodily exertion, and work-out regimes in addition to what a normal curriculum would cover at other high schools. Does everyone have a writing implement?"

""Yes, Kan-sensei,"" everyone eventually confirmed.

"I am now distributing several papers; pass them back along each row, and everyone ensure you have four distinct documents with nothing missing or duplicated."

Katsuki sneered as he slapped the papers onto Izuku's desk, but he didn't explode anything, say a word, or produce even a threatening *pop* from his palms, so Izuku felt like it was already an improvement over Aldera.

"Everyone has one copy of these four papers? Good," Kan grunted after a wave of quiet affirmations. "The first paper is a summary of the upcoming school year's holiday schedule, and on the reverse side you'll find a copy of our weekly class schedule; we will not be following this schedule today, due to the requirements of Orientation, but the period lengths will remain the same.

"The second page is a brief summary of UA's Code For Student Conduct, including what information you should not share with people about our school's practices, the standards of behavior you are expected to uphold as proud young heroes, and the contact information for myself and other school officials if you have questions, or you need assistance with replacing a lost Student ID card, for instance.

"The third page is a list of UA's extracurricular activities. Clubs will begin recruiting later this week or early next week, and some activities have limited seats, so review it carefully and decide where your interests lie.

"The fourth page," he continued, "is a personal questionnaire I distribute to every homeroom class I teach. Fill it out as quickly as possible so you can return it to me before we attend the First Years' Opening Ceremony when first period begins. It's a reference sheet so I can get to know each of you quickly, with no grade attached beyond participation.

"You have the rest of homeroom until First Period to answer the questions and return it to me. When First Period begins, I will lead you to the main auditorium for our opening ceremony and student orientation, which will last until the end of our second period, or possibly the third period. Once that is complete, we will return here to perform a few quick introductory activities and ice-breakers before lunch. After lunch, we will meet here again and I will take you outside for a set of test exercises designed to gage your current limits and abilities. Any questions?"

"Sensei," Tenya declared, "did you have a specific meaning the you referred to 'the First Years' Opening Ceremony'?"

"Second- and Third-Year students are expected to know the rules already, so Principal Nedzu has them perform other activities in the morning to better address the needs of students new to UA. Any other questions? …Then you should be writing to complete the questionnaire."

""Yes!"" Everyone quickly bent over their desk again to begin scribbling.

'Hey, this is pretty normal,' Izuku thought upon reading the questions.

The Opening Ceremony was… well, it was what it was, though given that Pro Heroes were speaking on the stage, Izuku felt it was pretty impressive too.

Principal Nedzu introduced himself with a joke about being a rat, dog, or bear—Izuku quietly guessed he was a white badger, but who knew—before reviewing the rules, guidelines, and expectations of the school. He was honestly a bit wordy, eating up a good chunk of time with his lecture, but he pulled it off.

Then each homeroom teacher spoke, barring 1-B's teacher, whom Izuku assumed was out sick (either with an illness or from crime-fighting injuries).

Kan-sensei would be teaching Health class and overseeing 1-A's Phys Ed as well. (Apparently, the Hero Course homeroom teachers always handled that for their classes.)

1-C's homeroom teacher was the Multiplicative Hero:
Ectoplasm, who also taught the first-years mathematics. He didn't speak long other than to assure the students that he wasn't scary, though Izuku noticed he'd apparently lost a jan-ken-po game with his co-worker Power Loader before going to speak.

1-D's homeroom teacher, Space Hero:
Thirteen, wouldn't teach the any classes for the Heroics Course outside of special occasions, (which Izuku noticed made the nice girl from the entry exam look more than a little depressed,) but was a cheerful figure inviting students to all do their best.

1-E's homeroom teacher was the Blind Hero: Mantle, whom Izuku identified immediately by their signature purple sleeping mask; having been blinded at a young age and become a hero anyway without aid from a Quirk to replace their vision, Mantle took the opportunity to speak briefly about diversity, overcoming obstacles, and the importance of students being willing to ask for help if they needed it as well, vowing to hear out and give a voice to any students who had special needs or felt discriminated against. (If Izuku shifted uncomfortably and thought back to his years as a Quirkless student in an apathetic school, well, he didn't say anything to anyone about it.)

1-F's homeroom teacher was the Excavation Hero:
Power Loader, whom Izuku again ID'd at a glance, given his distinctive helmet and shirtlessness. He spoke about the importance of creativity, versatility, and trusting the teachers to be there as supportive figures for the students, who could learn from their seniors' experience and mistakes.

1-G's homeroom teacher was
Snipe, who'd be teaching linguistic Japanese as well—Izuku was sure he heard a quiet comment about a gaijin teaching Japanese, but he couldn't see who'd said it—and who asked the students to behave responsibly, or at least to get a teacher in on any pranks they were planning against other faculty, because everyone liked a good laugh.

1-H's homeroom teacher was the Construction Hero:
Cementoss, who'd be teaching modern literature, (apparently a separate course from Japanese language/grammar on UA's syllabus,) and who didn't have much to say to the students yet.

1-I's homeroom teacher was
Present Mic, who gave everyone a big "HEY!" greeting again and declared that he'd be teaching English classes.

1-J's homeroom teacher, sure enough, turned out to be the Impersonator Hero: Caricapture, just as Vlad King had said earlier, and Izuku was a bit too busy in his own head to pay more attention than that.

1-K's homeroom teacher turned out to be the R-18 Hero:
Midnight, who'd also be teaching their Art/Art History classes, and she took advantage of being the last homeroom teacher introduced to also give a refresher lecture on student behavioral policies along with exactly what "Mmm… punishments," could be expected for violations.

Izuku still hadn't seen hide nor hair of All Might, but the Symbol of Peace had said he'd be teaching at UA… 'Maybe he used up his time saving people this morning and couldn't make it, since he's in his skeletal body now?' Izuku shook his head and dismissed the thought as Principal Nedzu took the stage again to introduce a few more faculty:
Recovery Girl was serving as UA's chief nurse, Lunch Rush would be serving them lunch as the chef, and Hound Dog's office would always be open to schedule a meeting should any student require advice from UA's guidance counselor.

Izuku really wished he'd brought his notebook, but he was also grateful to the cute and chubby girl who'd been so nice for poking him in the side once or twice when his muttering went a little too far as he took in everything, even if it made him blush that a cute girl was touching him. (Repeatedly! But it didn't hurt! And she was smiling at him to boot!)

It was almost 11:30 when the opening ceremony ended. One-by-one, each teacher took their homeroom back to class, with 1-A going last as Vlad King had stayed on stage conversing with Hound Dog and Principal Nedzu about something.

Finally, the muscular Blood Hero motioned to his class and led them away through the halls again.

'I think this is what he looks like when he's in a good mood? I can't really guess his expression with his tusks—I think those are tusks, since the teeth are pointing up from his lower jaw instead of down from the top like snake fangs—but I really hope he's in a good mood for the rest of today,' Izuku wished.

"Everyone take your seats," Kan-sensei instructed when they were in the classroom again. "Now that you've been introduced to the school, its policies, and our faculty, it's time for introductions to each other. Each of you will come up here in order according to your seat number, stating your name and any details you wish to share with your classmates, such as your family situations, your hobbies, or your dreams. Aoyama-kun, you'll be going first after I give an example, so take this opportunity to think of what you want to say," Kan instructed.

"I will."

"Good. …Students, as I said before, my name is Sekijiro Kan, professionally known as the Blood Hero: Vlad King. Although I write my name in kanji, my surname comes from my Turkish father, Demir Kan. I will turn 31 come November 10 of this year, and I remain unmarried. I have a pet dog named Mert whom I will happily show pictures of to any interested students outside of class hours.

"My Quirk is called Blood Control," he continued, "allowing me to manipulate my own blood, be it inside or outside my veins. When I was your age, many people believed I could not become a successful hero with this Quirk, but I was admitted to Seijin High School and I proved my mettle. Currently, my ambition is to see all of you become excellent adults, whether you choose to continue into professional heroism or decide that your true interests lie elsewhere; know that there is no shame in either path," he declared, "so long as you decide to follow it for the right reasons.

"If you need to contact me outside of school hours, my UA email address should be used for anything that is not time-sensitive, followed by texting me, and only in an emergency should you contact me via phone call. I still perform some field work alongside my teaching duties, and because my phone number is reserved for emergencies, I never silence it, so know when you call me that you may be interrupting heroic activity. That said, if it is an emergency, call me immediately and do not hesitate.

"That concludes what I have to say on these matters. Aoyama-kun, are you ready to speak?"

"Oui-oui, sensei." The stylish blond boy moved in front of Kan's desk as the man stepped aside to make room for him. "Boujour, my fellow classmates! My name is Yuga Aoyama, and despite my name, I am technically a foreign exchange student from France, as I possess dual citizenship. If ever anyone wishes to question me about my history or my birthplace, I will be très heureux to speak all about it!

"I pride myself particularly on my style and fashion sense; should anyone need advice for catching the eye of that special someone, I can find no greater joy than making it happen! Best Jeanist is my favorite modern hero, but I've long been fond of His Purple Highness as well… at least among Japanese heroes. I doubt any of you would recognize popular heroes in France, non? I look forward to working with you all in the future."

Everyone politely clapped as he bowed and returned to his seat, with the very pink girl behind him offering a high-five as she stood to speak her piece.

"Hiiiiii~!" She sang as she offered a bow to the class. "I'm Mina Ashido, and I look forward to getting to know almost everybody here! I say almost everybody because I already know my Horn Buddy Eijiro-kun over there." She grinned and did a finger-guns gesture to the boy with spiky red hair. "We went to the same Junior High, and he placed second in the Entrance Exam with 74 points! So woo-hoo, and give him a round of applause, 'cause Eijiro-kun doesn't talk himself up nearly enough," she cheered, clapping for her classmate.

*clapclapclapclapclapclap*

Everyone (almost everyone, since Katsuki and Shouto Todoroki didn't get that into it,) took a moment to offer their applause to the boy, who was blushing almost as red as his hair.

Kacchan took 1st place, I took 7th, Eijiro Kirishima took 2nd, Izuku scribbled down quickly on a blank page of his new notebook before he turned back to the page he'd started on Mina Ashido, which listed her notable traits -- mutation Quirk causing pink skin & hair, black sclera like All Might but yellow irises, and horns or antennae that may have a super-sensory purpose -- with plenty of space for whenever he found out about her Quirk.

Which was right now.

"My Quirk is called Acid, and it does pretty much what is says," Mina continued, displaying a pale, wet sheen on one hand. "I've got good control over it now, but every now and then I get excited and a bit slips out, so I hope you'll forgive me for melting any holes in your clothes, hahahaha…

"Fun fact about me, I technically have two birthdays! Don't worry you only need to get me one present, if you get me any at all, no pressure! July 30 is my legal birthday on my birth certificate, but July 15 is my adoptive birthday, so since we celebrate that one more in my family, I'll sometimes forget and write it on official documents. Sorry sensei!" She gave him a wave and kept going.

"I love scary movies, especially some golden oldies from the pre-Quirk era-," Izuku perked up and put down a note about that, since it implied she wasn't overly hung up on people's value through Quirks. "-and then my other favorite thing is dancing! I took some ballroom and Latin lessons in elementary school, but the wild rhythm of breaking dancing is where it's really at, though I'm a killer at DDR-style games too. Feel free to invite me to an arcade and I'll dance the pants off you, wait and see!"

She bowed and took her seat, shooting a thumbs-up to the green-haired girl that sat behind her whose turn it was.

"…My name is Tsuyu Asui," Tsuyu declared when she got to the front of the room, "and my Quirk gives me a lot of froggy characteristics, kero. I like rainy days, but even more than that I like my family. I'm the oldest of my parents' three children, so I have a 10-year-old otouto named Samidare, and a 6-year-old imouto named Satsuki.

"Some people tell me I look weird, and I speak my mind, kero. I haven't had a lot of friends, and my best friend Habuko from middle school went to Isamu Academy instead, because she couldn't fight robots with a Quirk that paralyzes people.

"I don't always know a lot about having friends, but if anyone wants to be friends with me, kero, I'll be in your care."

She bowed, everyone clapped, and on the way back to her seat, Mina shot up and hugged her.

"You've got a friend in me, Asui-chan," the pink girl avowed firmly.

"Kero. Please, call me Tsuyu, or just Tsu."

"Got it, Tsuyu-chan!"

Asui-san has hair and it isn't brightly colored, so I don't know if her abilities include poison, like those rain forest frogs. Note: look up the difference between frogs and toads, in case it's important, Izuku wrote, finishing just in time to turn to a new page as Tenya marched to the front of the room.

"This is our first meeting! I am named Iida Tenya," he declared with a sharp bow, "and I will be in your care as your classmate! I attended Sōmei Private Academy before enrolling in UA's heroics course, and I am proud to place 6th in the entrance exam's practical segment with 52 Villain Points and 9 Rescue Points, though it shames me that I did not act more heroically. My goal is to grow as a person and become a Pro-Hero that UA can hold up as a prized alumnus!

"My blood type is A, my birthday is August 22nd, and I am currently 15 years of age! My favorite food is beef stew, especially when served over cooked rice, and my favorite beverage is grapefruit juice! Despite this, I most often drink orange juice, as it serves to more efficiently fuel my Quirk: Engine!

"Engine is a mutation-type Quirk with embitter-type effects, allowing me to run, jump, and kick more forcefully through the biological engines in my calves. I have not noticed the phenomenon personally, but I am informed that my exhaust occasionally generates a pervasive smell resembling burnt oranges. If this offends any of you through delicate olfactory systems, I humbly apologize in advance!" Tenya bowed sharply again to the class as a whole.

"I was born and raised in the western Tokyo region, and I am an avid reader, especially of non-fiction and scholarly articles. This concludes what I have to say, and I look forward to our year together!"

He bowed a final time and strode back to his seat.

The nice brunette girl with the cutely chubby cheeks was the last member of that row, and Izuku sent her a tentative smile of encouragement as she moved up front.

"Ahem." After carefully clearing her throat and taking a deep breath, the bob-cut girl bowed and began. "Hello, my name is Ochako Uraraka, and I'm happy to be here with all of you! My Quirk lets me neutralize the effects of gravity on objects I touch, and so I've always wondered about being in genuine zero-gravity since I was little. As a result, outer space and the night sky are some of my favorite things, along with mochi, yay!" She pumped one fist with a little cheer before settling down to continue.

"I… well, I guess since Iida-kun brought it up and Ashido-chan said what she did, I think I should admit that I placed 3rd in the entrance exams. Oh! But if you'll all give a bigger round of applause to our other classmate with green hair, I would've died or been really injured if he hadn't saved me by going pow and destroying the 0-point robot with one punch!"

'Wait, that's me! She's talking about me, everyone's looking at me, whatdoIdowhatdoIdo?' Izuku smiled to smile nervously and wave weakly as a quick shower of applause was delivered to him.

Katsuki, of course, glared without any clapping, but Izuku might've been more worried if Kacchan had congratulated him, so at least that was something normal to hold onto here at UA.

"Thanks again, fluffy hair-kun," Ochako called as the applause petered off and the class turned their attention to her, "and thank you, everyone, for being so kind. My dream is to grow up to be a successful pro-hero able to take care of my family, and I particularly hope to be a great rescue hero like my idol Thirteen! I look forward to getting to know everyone in time."

She bowed and took her seat quickly, while another blond boy—with hair less glossy than Yuga's but darker than Katsuki's, though he more prominently had a tufted tail longer and thicker than his leg sticking out the back of his uniform—stood from the front of the second row to speak.

"My name is Mashirao Ojiro, please take care of me," he said simply. "My Quirk gives me this tail without any other special powers, but I've worked hard and studied martial arts for most of my life, so I hope to become an excellent hero anyway.

"When I'm not practicing or studying, I occasionally relax by watching old movies," he continued with a nod to Mina, "and I'm a particular fan of Bruce Lee. His words have helped me through difficult circumstances, and I'd like to share a few of his sayings with you.

"'The more we value things, the less we value ourselves.' 'The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus.' 'Be happy, but never satisfied.' If any of these sayings inspire you to seek more of his wisdom or help you through hard times, I'll be glad.

"I have blood type O, and you don't need to worry about my birthday. I'll be in your care, so thank you for listening to me."

They all clapped as he bowed and returned to his seat, replaced by the smiling boy behind him with darker blond hair.

"Hey-hey-hey, I'm Denki Kaminari, guys! It's nice to meet you, so please take care of me," he laughed with a cheery bow. I'm Type O, age 15, birthday June 29th, and single but cheerfully lookin' for love.

My Quirk-," Denki made a peace sign, and then crackling filled the air as he jumped sparks between his two fingers. "-generates electricity I can release with
shocking effects! Agh, no, wait…" He face-palmed, dismissing the charge briefly. "It's electricity I can release to stunning effect, that's what I meant to say, just pretend I said that first, okay?

"I think it's really cool that we got so many of the top ten in our class—I'm not one of them, but let's have a second round of applause for Eijiro Kirishima," he invited, as everyone gave a quick burst of clapping for the blushing redhead again, "'cause my man probably earned a ton a' rescue points hauling my butt to safety after I only short-circuited almost every robot in a half-block radius during the exam—but I'm lookin' forward to working with everyone and I'm betting we'll kick class 1-B's butts whenever we face off in competitive events!

"My favorite food has been hamburgers ever since I did a history project on them—seriously, like, hamburgers go as far back as the Mongols, that's amazing—and all my other favorites tend to change, so check in every now and then if you're ever curious!

"Currently, I'm really pumped to be in school with Present Mic and all the other swell teachers, and I'm lookin' forward to a kickin' year, yeah!"

He shot the class a double thumbs-up to finish, then slapped an enthusiastic high-five with the already identified Eijiro as the redhead stood up to take his turn.

"Um… hey," he managed, prompting a couple chuckles and a couples individual greetings in return. After another moment, the boy got his head together again and puffed up proudly. "So like they said, I'm Eijiro Kirishima, and my dream is to be a super-manly pro-hero like my idol: Crimson Riot! I wasn't planning to place 2nd or anything, but it happened, and now I'm gonna live up to it or break trying.

"By the way, news flash: I'm really tough to break," Eijiro revealed, as his skin shifted into a craggy texture, like a cliff face or jagged concrete. "My Quirk is Hardening, and I can make parts of my body sharp, too. Needless to say, those robots didn't stand a chance, and since I wasn't in as much danger I figured I might as well get people to safety."

"My hero," laughed the invisible girl in front of Katsuki (2 seats in front of Izuku). Eijiro shot her a thumbs-up in reply.

"Back at ya," he said. "Anyway, I… can't remember my blood type at the moment, but I turn 16 on the 16th of this October, and I'm planning to celebrate at a yakiniku because my favorite foods are all meat, so keep a day free around then!

"I went to junior high with Mina-chan, and she deserves her own round of applause on account of this one time she made a creepy guy who might've been an actual villain go away and leave us kids alone. Round of applause, people!" Everyone clapped for Mina, who may or may not have blushed while giving an enthusiastically seated bow back. "Anyway, that's what I have to say, but it's looking to be a year where I'll grow real manly surrounded by awesome people. Thanks for listening!"

He took his seat and the kid behind him—a boy with a skull shaped like a cross between a squid and a rocky outcrop—stood up, only to walk past Kan-sensei's desk to stand in front of the board.

Koji Koda. 15. Born 1st of February. Blood Type A.

I like animals. I really don't like talking, sorry. I write or use sign language.

After a quick glance at Kan, who nodded approvingly, Koji bowed to his classmates, indicated the board with another gesture, and returned to his seat.

Izuku noticed that Denki and Eijiro both made sure to slap Koji five as he passed, and the tall, muscular brunette boy seated behind Koji said something quiet but kind as he moved to the front of the room for his turn.

"I'm Rikido Satou," he declared amicably, "blood type O, and I like baking. Don't worry about presents, you'll know when I turn 16 because I'll bring in a cake, provided Kan-sensei is okay with that."

"Only if I get a slice," the man laughed, and Rikido nodded affirmation.

"Can do, sensei. My Quirk makes me super-strong, fueled by eating sweets; my sister hates me for never dieting," he chuckled, "but she never suffered three cavities before turning ten, so I think it evens out.

"My family lives in Tottori Prefecture, so I'm staying at an apartment UA helped me scout out. I don't like eating alone, so come on over for dinner sometime, my door's always open! Unless I'm making soufflé," he added seriously, "in which case, intruders who disturb my baking zen will be… I don't actually have a threat, but if you make my soufflé collapse, I'll think of something," he finished.

Bowing, Rikido took his seat at the back of the room, and the frontmost student of the third row stepped up.

'Three arms with webbing between them? Yeah, no wonder he's wearing the sleeveless version,' Izuku assessed. 'Aaand that nose-down type of mask probably means he's sensitive about his mouth, teeth, or something involving the skin he's covering.' He made a few notes to that effect as the boy began.

"My name is Mezo Shoji," the tall, silver-haired boy said politely through his mask. Then, one of the fist-like nubs on the end of his arm morphed into a mouth—with normal-looking teeth, Izuku noted—and continued, "I think my quirk should be self-evident. I like summer and warm weather especially; I'm from Fukuoka Prefecture in Kyushu, but when I was younger I loved visiting family in Okinawa, and one day I'd like to go to Hawaii.

"If you don't mind my Quirk, I think we'll get along just fine. Please take care of me, and I'll endeavor to return the favor." He bowed and returned to his seat.

Able to duplicate mouth structure and vocal cords, Izuku noted as the short-haired girl with extended earlobes stood up. Indeterminate whether he can taste or eat using them. He quickly turned to a new page as the bored-looking girl began to speak.

"My name is Kyoka Jirou, and I'm here because I hope to be the first pro-hero in my family. I can play several instruments and I love music; I hope I can carry that love to fans and raise people's spirits even while I save them as a professional hero once I graduate. My favorite genre is rock, though I picked up some punk from my mother, and when it comes to musicals I'm undefeated in Name That Song, much to my shame," she deadpanned.

"Dun-dun-da-dun~," Denki sang out immediately with a smile.

"There are at least three songs that start like that," Kyoka dismissed with a smirk. "Anyway, I'll let you discover my Quirk's abilities on your own. Let's have a nice year together." She bowed and returned to her seat.

Something to do with her ears, which suggests hearing, especially if she like music. There are a couple ways to test her hearing, but some of them are mean and I don't really want to bother anyone like that, Izuku noted as the smiling, black-haired boy behind Kyoka took her place.

"My name is Hanta Sero, and it's nice to meet everyone! My favorite fictional hero is Spiderman, though All Might is obviously the best in real life," he cheered, and Izuku shot him a smile. "My Quirk lets me produce adhesive tape, and I love the idea of growing up to swing between buildings on my way to fight crime! Iida-san, if you're ever short on fuel, oranges are my favorite and I usually carry a few for snacking," he offered.

"That may be greatly appreciated," Tenya declared.

"Cool! I've got family outside of Japan, and I've traveled a bit with Mom's job—I even went to Turkey once, Kan-sensei, so we should swap stories some time—but I've always felt at home here, so I hope to stick around, making everyone proud as a great pro-hero! Oh, and my blood type's B, if you're wondering."

He took his seat again and the bird-headed boy behind him moved up front.

"Born in Shizuoka Prefecture 15 years past, I am Tokoyami Fumikage-,"

"I'm Dark Shadow! Hi~!" declared a phantasmal, black bird's head torso that popped out from behind the boy. "I'm his Quirk! Oh, and Fumikage is his given name, while Tokoyami is our family name, he's just old-fashioned like that. So that means I'm technically Dark Shadow Tokoyami, just like he's Fumikage Tokoyami!"

Is he acting, or is it a split-personality, or is Dark Shadow really an independent and self-aware quirk? Izuku wrote that down and stared at it. 'Given that I have a Quirk passed down from one user to another, it's not the craziest thing I've ever heard…"

"H-hm! Yes," Fumikage said simply. "I believe Dark Shadow has revealed all that this day's sunlight shall uncover before proliferate eyes."

He quickly took his seat without waiting for any applause.

The last student of the row before Izuku's row looked… memorable. At least as much as Fumikage and Mezo, only while their appearances were natural, the scar around his left eye was something he hadn't been born with.

'Even odds on whether or not his red-on-the-left, white-on-the-right hair is natural, though,' Izuku figured. 'I'm pretty sure… Yeah, Principal Nedzu mentioned that UA doesn't have a dress code rule against hair dye or colored contacts.'

"My name is Shouto Todoroki," he said flatly. "I aim to become the number one hero with my ice Quirk." He bowed perfunctorily and returned to his chair.

'Geez that was brief! But, an ice Quirk? I've heard the name Todoroki before… A lot of Pro Heroes probably have family here, and I don't know who, but at least two of my classmates are Recommendation Students. I'll have to look him up later! For now, it's the invisible girl's turn, so I need a new page,' Izuku decided.

'Wait! Aaaaagh! It's almost my turn to speak, I'm just after Kacchan, what am I going to say?'

As Izuku all-but-panicked, the floating girl's uniform took center stage.

"Nice to meet everyone! My name's Tohru Hagakure, and my Quirk allows me to animate my clothing at range, just like Best Jeanist!"

""Huh?"" Everyone murmured, having not expected that.

"Just kidding! I'm invisible, in case you can't see, get it?" She laughed brightly, prompting chuckles from her classmates. "It's great, no one can ever tell if I'm sticking my tongue out at them, and I'm unbeatable at poker! Well, unless I'm playing with my parents, but that's another story.

"I really love sweets, especially caramels, and I love watching every dokkiri Candid Camera show I can find! I also like climbing trees and the feel of grass between my toes," she declared. "I'm from Tokyo, so friends are welcome by any time, and Eijiro-kun also helped me out during the entry exam, so let's give him another round of applause, folks!"

"Ahahaha…" The redhead laughed awkwardly with a faint blush as people clapped for him again.

"Anyway, I'm an only child," Tohru continued, "and I'll turn 16 on the 16th of June. Let's all be friends and get along together, okay~!"

So saying, she bowed and took her seat.

'Here it comes,' Izuku predicted tensely as Katsuki slouched out of his chair to the front of the classroom.

"I'm Katsuki Bakugou, the highest-scoring student on the entrance exams," he grit out, "and all of you are going to be asked stories about me once I become the Number One Hero, so pay attention or you'll miss some big things." That was all he had to say, no bow or greetings.

"…Oh yeah, you're the student who wiped out a bunch of robots without a single rescue point," Tsuyu commented as Katsuki stomped back to his seat.

The blond froze stiffly as mutters broke out in the class.

"That comment was unnecessary, Asui. You're out of turn."

"Sorry, sensei," she apologized as Vlad King frowned at her.

*pop-pop-pop!*

'Aw cripes,' Izuku moaned silently as Bakugou began emitting firecracker sounds out of sheer irritation.

"…Yeah," he growled out, "well moving people from A to B won't keep anyone safe if there are still villains around to menace them again later, you brainless extras! So better my way of solving the d*** problem than what Deku went with-," He pointed dramatically at Izuku, who froze. "-getting a bunch of 'rescue points' without beating a d*** enemy, meaning the people he saved are all still in danger until harder guys do the job for him even though he had the gall the place 7th, like that's anything to be proud of!"

"Bakugou! That's enough, take your seat," Kan scolded. "Both approaches are important and necessary to being a hero."

"…Feh," Katsuki scoffed, sitting without any further confrontation.

'Oh, thanks heavens that's over with,' Izuku sighed.

"Midoriya, you're up," Kan-sensei prompted, and Izuku tensed again.

'Or not!'

Step by step, Izuku ponderously made his way to the front of the room.

20 pairs of eyes—excluding Dark Shadow, who wasn't visible, but including Kan-sensei off to the side—were focused on him.

On him.

Just on him.

"Uhh…" Izuku began. Then, "P-Pleased to meet you! I'll be in your care!"

With the traditional yoroshiku voiced, Izuku began speaking, though he honestly had no idea exactly what he was saying.

He thought vaguely that he'd covered his fondness for analysis, his status as an All Might fan, having Katsudon as his favorite food, (though technically he like Mitsuki-ba-chan's spicy curry even more, he just rarely had it unless they were visiting,) and probably some other things like his blood type, but he actually pretty much blanked out until he found himself back in his chair.

He was two sentences into taking notes on the boy who sat behind him—named Minoru Mineta according to those same notes—and he had no idea how he got there.

'No worries, kid,' suggested an amused voice in his head that didn't sound like him at all, but before Izuku could worry about it, (or why he'd inscribed the kanji for Big/Great like a star next to his oddly written notes,) the short boy with round purple balls on his head was trotting back to his seat, and the last member of their class was standing for her introduction.

Izuku hurriedly turned to a new page, ignorant of the fact that Katsuki had turned around briefly to give him an odd look, and got ready to take notes again.

"I am named Momo Yaoyorozu, and it's a pleasure to meet you all," the last member of their class intoned politely with a bow. She was tall—the tallest of the girls, at least—and except for one bit of her bangs that framed the right side of her face, she had the rest of her black hair pulled back in a spiky ponytail. Her eyes were angled sharply, but her mouth seemed predisposed to showing a small smile. "I also enjoy reading non-fiction," she continued with a nod to Tenya, who stiffened slightly, "along with traveling and obtaining souvenirs.

"As a recommendation student, I didn't take the same Entrance Examination as everyone else, but I hope to prove myself as a capable heroine all the same. I will turn 16 on the 23rd of September, my blood type is A, and my Quirk-," She reached down to where her calf was revealed by the bottom of her skirt, and there was a glow of multicolored light. "-allows me to create any object if I'm sufficiently familiar with its form, construction, and composition."

She raised her hand to display a matryoshka doll in a crane-patterned kimono, displaying a happy smile as the class gave an appreciative murmur.

"I'm especially fond of these, and I have an excess from creating them as Quirk exercises, if anyone wants a keepsake some time. I look forward to our year together."

She bowed and returned to her seat as people applauded politely.

"Very good," Kan-sensei declared as he moved to the front of the room again. "It's almost time for lunch, so I'll guide everyone to the cafeteria; keep an eye on the time, and meet back here by 13:20 for your afternoon assessments. Gather your things and follow me."

What is My Hero Academia? Why write this story?

My Hero Academia is a popular series at the moment focusing on the story of teenager Izuku Midoriya, who wants to become a Pro-Hero when he grows up.

It takes place in a world where 80% of the population are born with some kind of extra-normal super-power called a Quirk. Unfortunately, Izuku is one of the 20% without a power, and people have mocked his dream of becoming a Pro Hero (which requires specialized training and a license, no vigilantes approved of here, no siree,) all his life and he's been bullied by a childhood ex-friend named Katsuki, whose extremely powerful Quirk (he produces an explosive substance from his palms and is resistant to his own explosions,) has had people gushing for years over how he'll grow up to be an excellent Pro Hero.

Then, early in his second year of Junior High/Middle School, Izuku is attacked by a villain and rescued by his idol, All Might, who is the #1 hero not only in Japan, but worldwide.

Izuku clings on as All Might leaves to take the villain (shoved into soda bottles for carrying due to its sludge-like body,) to the police, and ends up discovering All Might's secret identity, as the top hero was mortally wounded a few years ago and has been growing weaker ever since.

Izuku still asks if he can be a hero without a Quirk. All Might, now feeble and skeletal in his true appearance, uses his own life as a demonstration, reasoning that if this happened to him even with his powerful quirk, he can't see a way to do it without a Quirk.

Izuku eventually trudges off, depressed, only to stumble across the same sludge villain (who escaped when Izuku was clinging onto All Might,) now attacking Katsuki. Katsuki's explosive Quirk isn't getting him free, the 4 Pro Heroes on the scene are keeping their distance because none of them (they claim) have suitable Quirks to get around the sludge-villain's malleable body while Katsuki is letting out wild, desperate explosions, and All Might's secret identity is in the crowd, despairing because he can't intervene after using up all his time/power for the day.

Izuku intervenes, running in to throw his bag in the sludge guy's bulbous eyes and try to claw Katsuki free. It isn't working well, but its more heroic behavior than any of the Pros on the scene, and All Might is inspired to go beyond, forcing himself into his heroic form to rescue both boys.

Afterwards, weak and skeletal again, he tracks Izuku down to declare, "Maybe you can't become a hero without a Quirk... but there is a Quirk that can be passed from one person to another instead of being born genetically! My Quirk! My boy, you've proven you could be a worthy successor; I will give you my Quirk, and you will be a hero!"

So what's changed between canon MHA and Blood Is Only Blood?

The first few episodes/chapters are the same, so I've skipped over them.

Quick summary of canon: Izuku trains by hauling heavy debris off a beach for 10 months to strengthen his body, because All Might's super-strength Quirk is so powerful it could injure him if he isn't ready. On the day of the Heroics High School's entrance exam, All Might gives Izuku his Quirk, since it'll need a few hours to "settle in".
Izuku goes to take the test, but has no idea what he's doing or how to use it to fight the truck-sized robots examinees are supposed to take down for points. But then.
It's getting close to the end, Izuku still has 0-points... and an absolutely GINORMOUS, building-sized robot shows up. Worse, a girl who was nice to him early is caught under rubble from it destroying a building, and it's stepping toward her.
Inspired, Izuku leaps up several stories in a single bound and demolishes the robot with one punch. He also breaks both legs with the jump, shatters his arm with the punch, and would've fallen back down several stories if the girl didn't rescue him with a null-gravity Quirk to land safely.
Worse, even though the medical specialist Recovery Girl heals his injuries in one go, he still scored 0 points total because the giant robot was intended as a "situational obstacle" to go around, not an "enemy" to be defeated. Izuku is morose.
Then Izuku is contacted by the school, UA, because... he's been accepted! It turns out, in addition to the stated Villain Points that were publicly explained, invigilators also awarded examinees Rescue Points based on their good behavior in rescuing fellow test-takers in over their heads, medical treatment, cooperation to subdue a greater enemy, etc. So Izuku will attend UA and can learn to be a Pro Hero following All Might's footsteps after all!

That's where we start, the first day of school. What changes?

In canon, UA's hero course has 2 classes with 20 students each. Izuku is in Class 1-A, taught by Shota Aizawa (aka Eraserhead) in canon. Meanwhile, Class 1-B is taught by Sekijiro Kan (aka Vlad King).

In reading MHA fan fiction, I've seen a few interesting stories where Izuku is moved to Class 1-B under Kan-sensei, but they never got very far.

More often, there's a Fanon tendency towards Dadzawa, making Aizawa-sensei this devoted and competent teacher who unerringly supports his kids.

'Dadzawa' is heartwarming, but in canon Aizawa explicitly calls Kan the better teacher between the two of them; it's a character flaw that he's largely hands-off, scare-them-straight, and a sink-or-swim mentor figure to 1-A. He'd still fight to the death defending them, but he also intimidates them, rarely bonds with or expressly supports them, etc.

Speaking as someone who studied pedagogy & teaching practices, what we sees of Aizawa suggests he's a mediocre teacher, even though he's an excellent Pro Hero.

We don't see a lot of Kan in canon, but I figure I've got room to give Kan some more traditional teaching skills, (based on how beloved he seems to be by canon 1-B,) stick him in charge of 1-A instead, and see where we go from there.

* Note: There will be no Aizawa bashing! If anything, several members of 1-B will actually end up better-off than in canon as well. He's a kick-ass human being even if he dumped CHA at character creation and I'm going to let him shine as a good teacher possibly more than canon as well, just by playing to his strengths instead of letting him overlook things. You'll see what I mean. `:D

Who are all the students mentioned here? What do they look like? I've never read MHA before so I don't know.

Well if you aren't familiar with the series, then I highly recommend it -- even just watching a few clips on YouTube really helped me -- but here's a line-up of the people in Class 1-A, based on their seating positions.

Are you using the right spellings? What about those suffixes after people's names, what do those mean? Why are people calling each other by last name, like in Harry Potter?

MHA is originally a Japanese series and has been translated to English for wider consumption abroad. I've studied Japanese (six semesters in college plus informal keeping up with it,) and I've been to Japan 4 times, so I'm familiar with the culture and certain things of significance that don't translate well. Let's address the big issues one at a time.

Names: In Japanese, people often introduce themselves with their family name first, followed by their personal/given name. Uzumaki Naruto, Potter James Harry, Monkey D Luffy, Midoriya Izuku, etc.

Despite this, I will be having characters and narration use names Western-style, [Given name] [Family Name], because it's what I expect my readers are used to, and because I had some trouble figuring out which was which when I started writing this.

However.

I am keeping the Japanese practice of characters referring to each other by their family names (especially in dialogue,) unless they are particularly close, as use of a given name is a sign of moderate closeness in Japanese culture.

Sekijiro Kan refers to his students by their last names: "Midoriya", "Aoyama", "Ashido", etc. Similarly, students (and other characters) will refer to each other by their family names in dialogue most of the time, even though the narration will use their given names. I'm hoping the correlation and exposure will help everyone remember both names for the characters, which I had issues with.

This is pertinent to the story because several characters have traits involving their names that wouldn't translate well otherwise:

  • Tsuyu Asui would normally be referred to as "Asui," "Asui-san," "Asui-chan," etc., but she tells people to use her given name "Tsuyu" because she hasn't had many friends and she feels that using her given name will let her make friends more easily.
    • In the Dub, she tells people to call her "Tsu" instead of "Tsuyu" as the equivalent, btw.
  • Momo Yaoyorozu is usually referred to as "Yaoyorozu" or a variation thereof, but she lets friends call her "Yaomomo" as a nickname that mixes both names while still being a bit polite, since she grew up in a formal environment.
  • Teachers: Even though Sekijiro Kan should be referred to as "Sekijiro" in the narration, I'm using his last name for him and other teachers in general (Shota Aizawa is "Aizawa" as well) just because it feels clearer and more comfortable while I'm writing.

Honorifics: You'll notice that names often have suffixes appended to them, mostly "-san", "-chan", "-kun", "-sama", "-senpai", "kouhai", and "-sensei". That's another aspect of the original Japanese I'm including. The honorifics are a convenient way (especially when combined with use of first or last names,) to convey a character's feelings toward whomever they're discussing or talking to, be it generally or at that specific moment.

The 'rules' can be tricky because appropriateness varies depending on the social positions of the speaker and the subject, but here's a quick list:

*No honorific* __ Very common when using someone's last name, to the point of being the default, but a sign of closeness/trust/intimacy when using someone's first name.
For example, Denki Kaminari is a friendly person who casually refers to Mezo Shoji as "Shoji" when they're talking casually about the Sports Festival. Mina Ashido is a friendly person but she still refers to Katsuki as "Bakugou" because he's a prickly person even though she's in 'the Baku-squad'.
Similarly, before he knows Katsuki well enough to get away with "Bakubro" or similar as a nick name, he uses just "Bakugou" and he uses "Todoroki" for the distant Shouto.
-san __ The most common honorific, usually defaulting to the equivalent of "Mr." or "Ms." without any particular gender significance. People who don't know each other well will refer to each other by last names without an honorific, but if they're polite, meek, or in an official environment, then "-san" is the default honorific.
Izuku uses [Last Name]-san for girls, even girls he's friends with like Ochako ("Uraraka-san"), because he's naturally anxious and he's trying to be particularly polite to them for fear of coming off as forward or too familiar.
-kun __ This honorific is mostly used for people of senior status to address people of junior status, regardless of gender. It's also used by boys addressing each other (with last names), and by girls addressing boys (first or last names depending on closeness), but only rarely used for girls.
Vlad King addresses female students as [Last Name]-kun when he's proud of or trying to reassure them, and does the same thing for the boys, because as kids and as his students they're sufficiently junior to him that gender doesn't matter. "Midoriya-kun", "Yaoyorozu-kun", etc. If he's annoyed or neutral, he'll use last names without the honorific.
Tenya is a stiff, formal person, but he addresses his friend Izuku as "Midoriya-kun". Similarly, even though Izuku is an anxious person who tries to be polite, he uses "Iida-kun" for his friend Tenya.
Ochako also addresses both boys with "-kun", though she uses "Iida-kun" for Tenya and the more intimate nickname "Deku-kun" for Izuku; since Deku is a pun off the kanji in his given name, she's almost calling him "Izuku-kun," which hints at her feelings for him (the same way Sakura & Ino in Naruto refer to their crush Sasuke Uchiha as "Sasuke-kun").
-chan __ This honorific doubles as an endearment, displaying some form of care or emotion (usually something cutesy or intimate) for the subject. While "-chan" and "-kun" don't have to be gendered, the former is usually used more toward, between, and by females, while the latter is used more with males.
Tsuyu Asui canonically calls Tenya Iida "Iida-chan" once they've become semi-close friends after USJ, because she thinks the familiarity will help her make friends. Similarly, she refers to Izuku as "Midoriya-chan" because she wants to be friendly and he isn't an abrasive person, she gets Eijiro Kirishima to call her "Tsuyu-chan", she tells Izuku to call her "Tsuyu-chan", and she even calls Katsuki "Bakugou-chan," which might verge on being a bit insulting since they aren't close at all (she's saying he won't be popular as a pro).
Similarly, Izuku started referring to Katsuki as "Kacchan", a nickname mixing in the "-chan" honorific, back when they were both young kids & good friends. He never stopped, but if he tried doing the same for someone he hasn't know so long, it would either be a sign of incredible closeness or a cutesy, backhanded insult like "widdle Katsuki" would be.
-senpai / -sempai __ Either version is technically correct, but "-senpai" is slightly more accurate to pronunciation. Appending "-senpai" as a suffix means you recognize the person in question as being of your status, except senior to you. Izuku will use "-senpai" when he speaks with 2nd-year and 3rd-year students, because they're all students but his upperclassmen are above him and more experienced.
-kouhai __ The reverse of "-senpai", upperclassmen will use this when speaking of or addressing their underclassmen. It basically means "junior" but not "subordinate".
-sama __ A very formal suffix used for important people, like government officials or religious figures. It can be used for family members in formal families as well, so Tenya might refer to his older brother as "Nii-sama" or his father as "Otou-sama".
* I should probably do an FAQ entry for family terms used, but maybe later.
-sensei __ A professional title that's like "Doctor" or "Professor". It applies to teachers, medical professionals, and authors, among other things. Students will refer to teachers as "-sensei", but teachers can also refer to each other with this unless they're close enough to use another form of address.

Spellings: Translating stuff from Japanese to English can be tricky because there may or may not be extra letters, overlapping sounds, mixed vowels, etc.

Mostly, I'm going to go with what I'm comfortable writing and what I think looks more like a 'name' to me.

I'm using "Ochako" instead of "Ochaco" because that's more true to the Japanese intent of her name translating as. "tea child/girl".

I'm using "Nedzu" instead of "Nezu" because it's easier for me to keep in my mind and I'm head canoeing that Nedzu pronounces it that way to differentiate it as a name, even though it originates with the Japanese term for "rat," which is "nezumi".

I'm using "Tenya Iida" instead of "Ida" to represent the long syllable, same with "Kyoka" instead of "Kyouka" but I'm keeping the last names "Jirou," "Satou", etc., and typing "Shouto" instead of "Shoto" just looks better to me, IDK.

1:2 - Assessment
Returning from lunch, everyone changed into their gym uniforms after Kan-sensei led them to the changing rooms, and then outside.

It was time for a Quirk Apprehension Test, he'd announced. The test was styled after elementary and junior high fitness examinations, but while those were performed without Quirks, these were anything goes.

Well… Almost anything.

"You're not competing against each other, so stop thinking of it that way," Kan-sensei had declared. "When any group of people are measured against each other, there will always be a first and a last. It's inescapable. Instead, you all will be competing against yourselves—against your past best and your future growth. For that reason, any activity to sabotage a classmate's score is strictly prohibited! Am I clear?"

""Yes, sir!"" They had chorused their understanding before they set to work.

It had… Well, it had gone okay for Izuku.

He would have said it went poorly, but without any negative consequences there wasn't really any reason to label it 'bad' in any way.

The rest of the class didn't even know he placed 20th overall, since Kan had given each person a sheet of paper near the end of the day with their ranks in each event plus their overall placement.

Only.

Izuku's paper had a handwritten note next to the his 20th place declaration. See me after class to discuss your training regime for the future.

It left Izuku nervous.

Nothing horrible was probably going to happen, if he was lucky, since it'd just be improved training rather than transferring him out of the Hero Course (oh no. Could they do that? Izuku didn't know, but the thought made his anxiety kick up a notch or two,) or kicking him out of UA entirely, but the thought really made him wish All Might was around to reassure him or go over the training they'd done to date.

"Deku-kun," Ochako called from her desk as the classroom emptied after the last bell of the day, "do you want to walk to the station together?"

"A-Ah… Sorry, Uraraka-san, but Kan-sensei said he wants to talk to me after class."

"I'm happy to wait," she said with a questioning look at their teacher.

"It's mostly regarding a few irregularities with Midoriya-kun's paperwork," Vlad King said from his desk at the front of the room. "I might end up driving him home, depending on how long it takes."

"Okay. Tomorrow then, Deku-kun?"

"S-Sure thing!" Izuku smiled back at her as she waved and left the room.

With only Izuku and the silver-haired man remaining, the student's mood took a nosedive into 'anxious,' after only a few moments.

"Sensei?"

"You're not in any trouble, Midoriya. Mid-terms aren't for more than a month," Kan said as he pulled out a laptop. This was not reassuring. "I want to show you something."

"Yes!" Izuku walked over to see the screen.

Kan started the recording, and Izuku's anxiety ratcheted up again as he watched a video feed of his Entrance Exam Practical, in which he ran around randomly like a chicken with its head cut off up until his confrontation with the 0-point robot.

Izuku could think of several things Kan might want to talk about, (none of which were good,) but he didn't know which one was on the table right now, and that put him on edge.

"S-sensei?" He finally asked.

"Now here-," Kan rewound the video to Izuku punching the robot and the few seconds after as he fell. "-is one of the things that stood out to me. We discussed this several times in judging it, and in the end we needed Recovery Girl to confirm that you'd broken both legs as well, meaning you wouldn't have been able to land safely, which earned Uraraka-kun more points for 'saving' you instead of merely 'helping' you."

"Y-Yes, sensei. Both legs with the jump, and then my arm. I'm not really sure how I would've landed if my legs weren't broken, though," Izuku began mumbling, "I wasn't really thinking about it. There's probably a way to strengthen them, I know All Might can super-jump without issue-,"

"You aren't All Might," Kan interrupted. "Though he will be available as a teacher for your Heroics classes, so you can ask him some questions then. But your Quirk is bound to work differently from his since you're different people-,"

'If Kan-sensei only knew. But I haven't even told Kaa-chan about One For All, I need to keep it secret.'

"-and it's my job as your teacher to help you, Midoriya. I'm going to be having these types of discussions with each of your classmates over the next few days, but I decided to have you go first, since your performance in the fitness test was not what I'd expected of someone with a physical enhancement Quirk. Can you explain to me your Quirk and its abilities in your own words, as you understand them?"

"Like on my Quirk Registry paperwork?" Izuku tried hopefully.

"Yes, along with any small details regarding how you use it, how you've trained it, and why you didn't use it during the tests."

Izuku tensed at the faint note of Danger in Vlad King's voice. 'Crap… No getting out of it, I guess.'

"M-My Quirk is called Superpower, and it…" 'How did All Might describe it to me? "One person cultivates the power, then passes it onto another person, who cultivates it before passing it on again." But I can't reveal this is a Quirk that can be passed on! "The power to transfer power," that has the same problems!' "…Superpower gives me super-strength, but I think there's more to it than that." 'Back around last Christmas, All Might called it…!' "I think it's a stockpile Quirk, Kan-sensei! I'm still figuring some things out, but instead of buffing up my muscles like Satou-san's Quirk, it's like this big wellspring of power I can pull out and focus into my limbs for incredible effect! Except, eheheh… I sort of break my bones when I use it," he admitted, "and crippling myself halfway through the test wasn't going to be productive, so I decided to wait and not bother Recovery Girl-sensei on the first day."

"You've never managed to use your Quirk without breaking your bones?" Vlad King sounded only a little skeptical. "If it's a stockpiling Quirk for kinetic energy… what about when you were younger, before as much energy would've been built up?"

"I…" 'No other way around it,' Izuku resolved. "…didn't have my Quirk when I was younger, Kan-sensei. When I was 4 years old, the doctor told me I was Quirkless, since it hadn't shown up yet." Izuku grit his teeth, braced, and prayed his sensei would focus on him having this Quirk now. It was All Might's Quirk, after all, so it couldn't be considered inferior even if it was in an only barely suitable vessel. "The day of the Entrance Exam was the first time I used it, even if I'd been feeling a bit… odd, up to then. Nothing I could've put my finger on," Izuku hedged, hoping to make the lie more believable, "but I'd been working out a lot every day to get ready for the Entrance Exam, and… Someone I talked to said it was like preparing a vessel? Until my body was ready for the strain Superpower put it on it-,"

"Midoriya, stop for a moment," Kan interrupted.

Izuku's mouth audibly clicked shut. He froze and did not move.

After another moment, Kan sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose.

"Okay, this actually clears up a lot of my questions," the man admitted. "You're not the first Quirkless applicant to the Heroics Course—I'd wager money you weren't even the only one this year, it's pretty common that a few kids try their luck—but developing a Quirk the day of the exam is an insane stroke of fortune.

"Not that fortune is a bad thing, Midoriya," he amended when he saw the fear on his student's face. "Luck is just as much a part of things as skill. We just need to make sure you benefit from the luck of the prepared and forethoughtful in the future, rather than random chance, and that's what training is for.

"So." He sat up to look Izuku straight on. "Your Quirk came in on the day of the entrance exam, and using it broke all the bones in three limbs. Since you aren't wearing any casts and you haven't had access to Recovery Girl, I assume you've not practiced with your Quirk since then, which is why you opted out of using it in today's test."

"Yes, sensei."

"Right." He took another look at Izuku and forced something like a smile onto his face before reaching out a hand to Izuku's shoulder. "On the bright side, Midoriya-kun, I know exactly what it's like to have a Quirk that damages your own body."

Izuku reeled as though struck by lightning. "Oh! That's right, your blood control still requires some wounds from your gauntlets-,"

"And if I use too much, I'll suffer the effects of blood loss despite my natural resistance," Kan finished. "Your Quirk is different from mine, just like it's different from all Might's, but there are similarities as well." He glanced at the time. "Before we trouble Recovery Girl, let's start with the hypotheticals: how did it feel when you used your Quirk?"

"That… Um… Well, I didn't do anything with it," Izuku clarified, "but I activated my Quirk a few times over the break between the exam and starting school here. I just… didn't… smash or punch anything. Can I try again and then describe it?"

"If you think it's safe," Kan-sensei allowed.

"I didn't break anything before," Izuku assured him. He stepped back to a clear spot in the room, took what wasn't quite a martial arts stance, (All Might had focused on physical conditioning, not combat techniques,) and reached inside himself for that feeling.

That feeling.

He hadn't felt it until he heard the girl—'Uraraka-san. Her name is Ochako Uraraka.'—call for help that first time, but once he recovered from pulverizing his own limbs…

Once he'd gone home and hopelessly waited, knowing he hadn't scored a single Villain Point…

He'd finally felt it.

Inactive, One For All sat like a wellspring of florescent light in his solar plexus, glowing without heat or force with only the potential to illuminate.

When Izuku stirred it up a bit, however, like a turtle head poking out of its shell followed by everything else

First came the heat that sat in only one place. Then the force that spread out around and behind him, like a cloak floating over his skin or All Might's titanic shadow.

Izuku wasn't enhancing anything yet, hadn't forced it into his limbs, but the raw potential remained, simmering, crackling across his skin.

Vlad King could see little sparks of errant green energy play across his student's body. He could feel the shifting air currents being moved as though by some sleeping giant's faint breathing.

It occurred briefly to Vlad King that he couldn't take a punch nearly so well as an Executor-class robot, but he dismissed it as unworthy. This was a kid, not an enemy.

"I-It's usually… in my body. Sleeping beneath my ribcage," Izuku panted as he held the energy at bay without reinforcing anything. "Now it's… spread out, filling the air around me. Have you ever seen… when there's a light on the floor used to make really big shadows on the wall, sensei?"

"I have. You said it's behind you? Around you? On top of you?"

"A-All three." Izuku took a deep, slow breath. Then another. "It's like a blanket draped on top of me, and a shadow spreading out b-behind me, and… no, it's not like light emitting from a lightbulb…"

"Midoriya, you can dismiss your Quirk," Kan informed him.

"R-Right." The pressure faded, leaving Izuku tired, but not exhausted. "If… Have you ever seen dry ice, sensei?"

"I have."

"It's a little like that, maybe? The power is coming from all parts of me just like mist off dry ice, but then it's streaming out around and behind me l-like… like the shadow of what I can become," Izuku compromised instead of likening it to All Might's shadow.

"I see." Truthfully, this had given Sekijiro Kan more questions than answers, but at least it was somewhere to start. "Well," he harrumphed, "this is a solid beginning, Midoriya. I have some ideas from where to go from here. For now, I have three instructions for you."

"Okay, sensei," Izuku agreed.

"First, don't practice with your Quirk at home, only use it here, where I can supervise you, preferably with Recovery Girl on hand. You probably will continue to break a few bones, just like I passed out from blood loss until I learned better control, but pain is a part of being a hero and Recovery Girl should be able to fix you up."

"I-I understand, sir!"

"Second, I'm giving you an extra credit assignment, something I did when I was starting out. Your Quirk seems to have an adverse effect on your body, especially your bones and muscles, so I want you to go home and look up information about the bones and muscles of the human body. You don't need to make an essay, just bring me a list of facts along with ideas about how they may apply to your Quirk. If a fact doesn't have an application, don't worry about it, but be creative; there will be times you can't rely on your body's power as a hero, when you'll need to use your head."

"Yes!" Izuku yelped, nodded wildly.

"That's enough." Izuku froze stock still. "Third, and this is connected to using your head… I ordinarily wouldn't be so easygoing on a student with your issues, but you've already shown me you have promise. During the introductions, you were the only student taking notes on all your classmates, and flipping to a new page with each student suggests you're planning on filling out their bios with more information instead of just using it to remember everyone's names."

Izuku remained very carefully still, as several people had reacted badly to his notebooks in the past, even though it seemed like Kan-sensei was complimenting him.

"Do you have any analysis training, Midoriya?"

"A-Ah, no! No real training, sensei," he admitted, "just stuff from online forums and writing notes after watching recordings of heroes in action."

"Well, it's a good habit to get into," Kan complimented gruffly. "Only recently developing a Quirk that supercharges your body explains why you're in the habit of using your head. Make sure you keep that habit, don't let it go to waste in favor of brute force even once you get your Quirk under control."

"R-Right! Yes sensei," Izuku agreed quickly.

"I don't want to take your notes on your classmates, but if you have other notebooks, I'd be interested in reading your work."

"I only brought my newest one with me, sensei." 'I didn't want to lose pages and pages of work if anyone thought I was creepy for making notes about them.' "I-I have more notebooks at my house?"

Sekijiro Kan smiled faintly and stood. "Well, I did promise you a ride home. Maybe you could loan me a notebook or two, and I could speak with your mother about your training regimen to date. You never placed last in any of the fitness tests today, it's just that other students all had one or two very high scores to make up for their lowest scores, while you didn't. You have a solid base to work from."

"Th-Thank you," Izuku said happily as he followed his teacher into the now-abandoned hallway.

"Speaking of which, Midoriya, I don't believe I've heard exactly what type of workout regime you've been using up to now," the Blood Hero noted as he led Izuku toward where he was parked. "What have you been doing for exercise up to now?"

"W-Well, I had to change up my regime after I finished cleaning Takoba Beach," Izuku admitted, worrying he hadn't been pushing to his full potential since he got through the Entrance Exam, "but usually…"

His recitation of how he usually worked out, along with explaining exactly what he meant by 'cleaning Takoba Beach,' (and holy cow, Sekijiro had read newspaper articles about the junk getting cleaned up in the past year, but he hadn't known his student was responsible for it; the kid's ability to haul around refrigerators and abandoned cars made him really wish the fitness tests included a bit more weightlifting to let the kid show off a bit,) lasted easily until Kan had arrived near Izuku's home, whereupon he spoke briefly with Mrs. Midoriya to introduce himself and accepted two old notebooks to review in his spare time.

Driving home, Sekijiro Kan considered that he'd made pretty good headway with his most obviously problematic student in just one day. Of course, he still needed to speak with the others—Minoru Mineta, Tohru Hagakure, Kyoka Jirou, and then on up the list to the top—but if today was an indicator of things to come, he figured he was in for a pretty good year with these kids.

(Oh, if only he knew...)

2:1 - A Few Meetings
On the second day of class, Sekijiro Kan made sure to be in his classroom early, well before the homeroom bell, so as to neatly sidestep any confusion caused by lacking a Class Representative who would otherwise give the standard 'Stand, Bow, Sit,' orders when he entered.

He'd also found that it kept the students from being unruly, having him sitting right there the first few days, and it let any students who wished to speak with him do so without interrupting class time.

He took the opportunity to review the questionnaires of the students he planned to pull out for one-on-one discussions throughout the day and make notes of what he'd say to them.

He also accepted a hand-written paper from Izuku with an approving nod, though all he said was, "I'll get back to you after discussing things with a few other students," which Izuku accepted.

The notes themselves started off mundane—defining the axial and appendicular skeleton, listing the 3 types of muscles (smooth, skeletal, and cardiac,) in the body, comparing ligaments to tendons—but Midoriya had gone Plus Ultra, to Vlad's approval, and filled out 3 pages with various facts: the tongue is a unique muscle because it's connected on only one end; legs muscles are roughly 4 times stronger than arm muscles; people diagnosed Quirkless tend to have a few more bones than people with non-mutation Quirks do to a few extra joints; babies are born with more bones than adults, as certain bones fuse together while they age to adulthood; the smallest muscles and bones are in each ear drum; more than half the body's bones are in the hands and feet; the largest muscle is in the buttocks; teeth are comparatively stronger than other bones; heat is produced by muscles contraction (which connects to shivering); muscles can't push, they can only pull, so they usually work in pairs; and other factoids.

Kan decided to leave Izuku's notes until after he'd given his attention to some other students, but his quick review seemed promising.

*Riiiinnngg!*

"Everyone, take your seats! Class is now in session," he announced, standing as everyone scrambled back to their desk. "If everyone has their class schedule? We will be following it today—and yes, that means you will be going through a Heroics 101 class this afternoon—so I'm going to review it with you one last time. Before that, I have two more pieces of business.

"First, while we won't do so today, this class will be appointing Class Officers soon enough, so I expect you all to do your best in displaying your abilities and garnering your classmates' trust if you want a position," he declared, meeting each student's gaze with a challenge in his eyes.

"Second, throughout the day I will be pulling each of you aside for a discussion about your abilities, your goals, and how I can help you grow to become excellent heroes. This is a usual practice of mine, so be friendly and try taking a few extra notes for your classmates when I pull them out in the middle of a lesson."

With that said, he got down to business, pulling out the class schedule to review.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"H-Heyya, Kan-sensei," Minoru said at the beginning of his 1-on-1 with his homeroom teacher. "So… Since you haven't called in Yaoyorozu as far as I know, I'm guessing you're going bottom-up-," He quickly suppressed a snort so he could keep speaking. "-by our ranking on on the tests yesterday? I'm sort of surprised Midoriya placed below me, but I didn't see him using his Quirk…?"

"We're here to talk about you, not your classmates, Mineta-kun," Kan informed him, though he noted down that Minoru had a solid intellect with good deductive abilities.

He'd need it for the strategic fighting necessary to compensate for his diagnosis of nutrient deficiency-induced dwarfism.

"Right! So…" Minoru trailed off, waiting for his teacher to speak.

"To begin with, your immediate greatest strength is your intellect and the tactical ability you displayed during the entrance examination; moreover, while sticking the robots to objects or each other was simple, it took good aim to jam the cannons on the Venator-class bots."

"Thanks! Yeah, I've had a lot of practice throwing my pop-balls; pretty good hand-eye coordination from juggling them, too," he boasted.

"I don't need a demonstration," Kan grunted as Mineta reached for his head. "I'm assuming the weight of the ball in the test threw you off?"

"Well, that and I'm just, you know…" Embarrassment showed on the boy's face for the first time. "Scrawny."

"Dwarfism resulting from Quirk-induced nutritional deficiency," Kan corrected. "It's a medical condition to be treated, not anything to be ashamed of."

"Yeah, well, it's really easy to look down on someone when you're literally looking down on them," observed the 108cm (3'6") tall boy.

"Which is why you want to grow up to be 'a popular hero people look up to with plenty of fans and groupies'."

"Yeah! That's totally my dream," Minoru agreed, omitting how much he looked forward to the perks of female fans and groupies.

"Hmm. You've mentioned being the youngest of three brothers. Does anyone in your family have a similar medical condition?"

"Just Okaa-san," Minoru forced out, "but since she really never uses her Quirk—growing spikes isn't really helpful to a housewife—I probably won't even be as tall as her. My brothers make some fun of me for it, but once I got good at petty revenge with my pop-balls they mostly stopped."

"Yet you didn't hesitate to build piles of a few dozen orbs for the side-step test, despite the nutrient loss. It was an inspired idea," Kan commended, "and you certainly earned your 1st-place score there, as well as placing 3rd by bouncing off your orbs for the sit-up test."

"I also stuck my feet and the seat of my pants to the floor," Minoru boasted. "Otherwise I would've just bounced around and you wouldn't have counted it. But yeah, I'm pretty clever with how I use them."

"If you use too many pop-balls at a time, do you risk passing out from rapid nutrient loss?" Kan inquired.

"I've… uh… never actually tested that far. Pulling off too many too soon makes my scalp bleed, and then they start growing back slower, so I never pushed past that point."

"Well, we may arrange for you to do so under controlled circumstances," Kan revealed. "Many Quirks are like muscles, in that exercising them to the breaking point—to, but not far beyond the breaking point, lest you suffer permanent injury—will cause them to grow stronger once they recover. Other than that… do you know what specific nutrients are most used in growing your pop-balls? Or… it may be somewhat off-putting, but I think it would be worthwhile to run a chemical analysis and see whether your pop-balls are edible; it could be a good way to recoup lost nutrients," he theorized.

"Whoa, I never even thought of that. Wait! If they are," Minoru realized with glee, "do you really think I might keep growing taller again?" 'Girls might actually like me! People could look up to me and I'd be so cool for real!'

"I don't know, but UA has the facilities to find out, and learning your limits is part of training to be a hero," Kan said. "…One last exercise. Off the top of your head, I want you to give me five limits or traits of your Quirk's function, and then list five possible uses that you can try under more controlled situations."

"Got it! Um, my balls stick to other things like people, clothes, and each other, but they don't stick to me unless I want them to. I can make them less sticky if I'm touching them, but their maximum stickiness is determined by my taking dumps and what I've eaten recently. They grow back immediately without any discomfort as long as I don't pull off more than a few dozen in a minute or two. I… can just bounce off my balls unless I want them to stick to me, that's how I did the side-step test thing. Aaand… my balls' stickiness can last more than a day but not more than two, but after a week they just sort of dissolve into dust either way."

"Good list. Now what can you discover."

"I… Maybe it's possible for me to grow larger or smaller balls? I've never tested how many total I can make if I'm pulling them off slowly instead of rapid-fire," Minoru mused. "I've never managed to cut them open and see if they're the same all the way through; scissors just kind of get stuck, you know? I've… Oooh! I've stuck them on my brothers' faces before like blindfold, but I don't know if they're soundproof so I could maybe stick them on someone's ears!"

"That's four," Kan acknowledged.

"Right. Fivefivefivefivefivefive… Five! I know I can make them less sticky after I pull them off while I'm touching them, but there's probably experiments I could do with making them more sticky or seeing how balls of varying stickiness interact with each other. Oh, and maybe cramming down a few nutritional supplements right before I go crazy would increase my stamina!"

"Very good," Kan declared, "that's a good list to start with. I'll let you get back to class now, so enjoy the rest of your day."

"I definitely will! Especially Midnight-sensei's class!"

"Yeah, she's always happy to have student fans," Kan observed drily as he led Minoru out the door, given that half the boys of that age were her fans.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Hiya, Kan-sensei! Class is so far so good," Tohru Hagakure chirped as she took a seat across from him.

"UA tries to not deprive students of a normal high school experience, Hagakure-kun," Kan greeted in return. "Now then… You are not in trouble, but I try to give those students who will need more support first priority in these meetings."

"And I placed 18th in the class," Tohru finished a touch glumly, "on top being the literal #36 student at the cut-off point for passing or failing, and that was with Kirishima-kun helping me out. So I'm 'in need of improvement' for sure, yeah."

"Which is what school, teachers, and learning are for, Hagakure-kun," he emphasized. "You still passed the practical with as much right to be here as every other student, and you hold tremendous potential to be an excellent hero. My job is to bring it out," he said as her posture perked up again.

"Right! So what do I need to do?"

"First off, to my understanding, your invisibility is a mutation quirk that can't be turned off or controlled?"

"Kinda…" she hedged. "Let me- May I show you a picture on my phone, Kan-sensei?" He nodded. "Great! Now… This is my family portrait, see?"

"You inherited your invisibility from both parents," he observed. It was really the only conclusion to draw from seeing three suits of clothing in the photograph.

"Right! Only…" She swiped to a different photo. "They don't exactly have the same kind of invisibility. This is my mom in between her siblings."

Kan looked over the picture and examined the woman in the middle: an unremarkable but plainly visible woman with black-brown hair in a pixie cut and a wide smile.

"I assume your father is permanently invisible, then," he concluded, returning her phone.

"Right! I take after him, but luckily I got enough from Okaa-san to avoid being… well… I got the best of both worlds, you see?"

"Is this connected to your reading and writing braille fluently?" He'd noted that on the Skills section of her questionnaire, since he remembered having Mirio Togata in his class, and the boy's inability to see when his Permeation Quirk left light unable to touch his insubstantial retinas.

"Yup! Tou-san's rods and cones are as invisible as the rest of him, so he's blind. I got enough of Kaa-san's light-bending ability to dodge that issue, but she usually stays transparent in solidarity with me and Tou-san when we're at home. If you ever meet in person, you'll see her outline moving around; it's just in still-photography where she looks really invisible."

"Interesting," Kan commented, "but we're here to talk about about you, not your parents, Hagakure-kun. Are you able to become visible, or have you ever been rendered visible by anything?"

"No, I…" She was quiet for a moment. "If I really focus, I can turn off my light-bending, which gives me a bit of an outline and messes up my sight. But… when… Do you have access to my medical records?"

"I can access them. I don't routinely do so for every student."

"Right. Well, back when I started my current regimen, it messed up my invisibility a bit and I got an outline, and some weird splashes of almost-color in a few places, but then a bit of practicing with my light refraction cleared me up again!"

"I see. Hagakure, what do you see as the areas you most need to grow in? Not just your weak points, but also the places where you can grow more to reach greater height."

"Oh! So… physical conditioning, I guess? I swear I really do work out, sensei, it's just I mostly do gymnastics, but bars, rings, and jumping flips didn't really translate well to the fitness tests."

"I already said you aren't in trouble. UA has a wide array of training equipment, so I can speak with my co-workers about borrowing gymnastics gear if you wish to show off. I also remember there's been a gymnastics club in past years, open to students with a hobby who don't receive the Hero Course's training, so you may look into joining them."

"That's great, thanks Kan-sensei! Physical conditioning so I can punch people out, sneaking so I don't get noticed when I step on a creaky floorboard, and maybe seeing if I can learn any light refraction tricks?"

"I can think of two more areas to explore."

"Yeah? I'm listening, sensei."

"Situational observation, so you know to avoid stepping on those creaky floorboards. More importantly, lessons in gear and equipment; your Quirk makes you ideal for bypassing and disabling security systems that rely on cameras, if we can teach you to make it look natural. No need to commit to anything, but later in your education there'll be an option for electives and for courses in cross-training skills like gadgetry."

"Okay! I'll keep it in mind, I promise, Kan-sensei! Thank you so, so much!"

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"…Kan-sensei," Kyoka Jirou greeted with a short bow before she took her seat.

"Jirou-kun. Has your first day been so far uneventful."

"Yes, sir." Her lips Quirked slightly. "It's really cool that Present Mic is a teacher here; he's one of my favorite pro-heroes."

"Running a side radio show does wonders for your popularity," Kan observed neutrally. "It's not unheard of for him to bring students on as guests or technicians who help run it."

"Really!" Kyoka had gone from laid back to almost sparkling with eagerness.

"Yes. If you keep your grades up and impress him."

"Sir!" She nodded affirmatively.

"You've noted that your Quirk can give you migraines? Auditory hyper-sensitivity?"

"Occasionally. I've gotten pretty good at filtering things out. Our opening assembly was a bit of a problem with everyone muttering and all the- all the breathing," she admitted, "but everyday classes shouldn't be an issue."

"If they become an issue, don't hesitate to let your teachers know. You excel in history and have some issues with math?"

"Variables may be the death of me, if villains don't get me first."

"That's not funny."

"Eep!" She froze and cringed back as he leaned forward to glower.

"Remember that you're training to enter a career involving life-or-death situations, Jirou-kun. All of your teachers are Pro Heroes who've risked their lives in the field. Ectoplasm in particular, you may notice, lost both his legs and walks with prosthetics. He may decide to make a joke about it, but you do not make that decision without thinking about the others around you."

"Yessir. Verysorrysir."

"Good." Sekijiro Kan looked over his student's questionnaire in search of a way to break the tension. "Can you really play all these instruments."

"Ahh… Yes, sir. My parents are both musical, so I've been playing instruments almost since I started walking. It's… really just a hobby without much application to heroics, but I like doing it, and I figure music can inspire hope just as much as heroes' big speech," she half-mumbled.

"Given your quirk works with sound, I wouldn't write off music as having nothing to do with heroics. That brings us to the skills you wish to hone. I see an interest in computers and gadgetry listed here."

"Yeaahh… I mean, yes, sensei. My Quirk is pretty useless offensively if I can't plug it into anything. Once my phone got smashed by a robot, I couldn't get anymore Villain Points in the entry exam, so I wouldn't have passed if it hadn't turned out that I got rescue points for grabbing people in similar straights."

"That didn't stop you from trying, though." Kan pulled up a holographic image of Kyoka in her Entrance Exam area, teaming up with two others to try jumping on a 3-point robot before it tossed them off. "We take that into account when awarding points."

"Which really worked out for me."

"Heroes who refuse to give up in the face of adversity… isn't that a large part of what it's all about?" Kan observed drily, and Kyoka flushed a bit at the indirect compliment. "Your interest in gadgetry extends beyond carrying extra speakers?"

"A bit? It starts as far back as Okaa-san using some computers for music synthesizing; Otou-san's a bit of a snob, but he uses them for composing more complicated pieces. During the Entrance Exam, I wasted, like, two minutes sorting through the wreckage of the robots in hopes of finding a speaker to replace my phone," Kyoka admitted, twirling a fleshy cord from her earlobe around one finger as she spoke. "I'm pretty sure I could've rigged something up from what I found, I just didn't know how, so if I get the chance to learn…"

"Some of the Support Course teachers sponsor a gadgetry club for non-support students with an interest," Kan assured her. "You also acknowledge that your physical fitness skills could use improvement?"

"Yeah, definitely. I just never really knew what to do without formal teaching on how much exercise is too far, so I'm a bit… I'm planning to get better about it."

"Well, we can whip you into shape one way or another," Kan assured her not at all ominously. He chuckled at her suddenly nervous expression.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Everything going well for you today, sir?" Denki Kaminari asked as he he slid into the seat opposite his homeroom teacher.

"I feel I've been productive so far, Kaminari-kun." Sekijiro Kan smiled semi-threateningly just to put the fear of him back in his student as he pulled out Denki's questionnaire for reference.

"R-Right! That's good, sensei." Denki forced a laughed in the face of Vlad King's teeth. "Classes so far have been a breeze for me, y'know?"

"That's good. I admire your honesty in answering the questions I asked," Kan said. Denki tried to keep smiling through his faint shiver. "'Sufficiently successful heroes can become rich and famous while making the world a better place, instead of screwing over people like most businessmen do.' 'I need to improve my mathematics and writing skills.' 'Overusing my Quirk fries my brain for a while, so I hope to fix that as I grow.'"

"Ahahaha yeah… But hey, when I do cut loose, I can fry a bunch of robots."

"You did indeed," Kan agreed. "You have the abilities to be in UA, make no mistake, and you have a solid understanding of where you need improvement. If you find yourself having difficulty with the pace of your classwork, we can speak again about arranging tutors. As for your Quirk… your electrical output is likely going to grow more as you train, but I'm not certain about your resistance to its side-effects. We'll need to begin actual Quirk training before we see, but if nothing else, I expect some kind of electrical regulator would be a fun project for the Support Course students to work on."

"Oh." Denki relaxed slightly. "Thanks, sensei. That sounds like a plan."

"It should. Have you done much research into your output limits, time, and the like?"

"Uhh… Other than borrowing and shorting out a few—sorry I'm forgetting what they're called—a few electrical current measuring thingies, not exactly. I really don't like being more stupid for an hour each time I cut loose," he admitted. "I got the 'one million' bit from my cousin working it out with math one afternoon, and I think she's pretty accurate."

"Just don't throw around your full power near other students until we've had a chance to measure your output. Some of them might be resistant, but particularly if you hit, say, Hagakure or Ojiro…"

"Oh. Oh, yeah, that would be baaaad," Denki agreed.

"Think of it as good practice for the future," Kan advised, "when you won't be free to hit genuine villains at full force either without unduly harming them. Better to learn now than later."

"Yessir."

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Take a seat."

"Thanks, sensei," Hanta Sero said. "So, uh, the others haven't really said what we're talking about?"

"We're here to discuss how I can help you grow in the coming months. I see you've got a bit of a knack for languages, speaking smatterings of Hindi, Chinese, French, Arabic, and English."

"Uh-huh! Up through junior high, Hahaue and I traveled around a lot for her job, so I had to pick up bits of the local languages to get by. I met a lot of cool people, though!"

"Friends and allies are always useful," Kan agreed. "I can see that's reflected in your dreams as well. 'I want to be a hero who crosses international boundaries, the same way All Might has worked in the States and Japan, with some visits to other countries.' An admirable goal."

"Glad you agree!" Hanta maintained his wide smile, so Kan theorized he had experience with people who were passively intimidating.

That was good. Ideally, he'd be hard to rattle, and he could keep his head in the game.

"I also see you've had some unfortunate encounters with criminals and villains in the past. I'm glad you came through unscathed."

Hanta's smile twitched and faltered, but quickly returned to normally.

"Yeah, those were scary. The worst one was when I building we were in got taken over, and everyone held hostage. I didn't actually have anything happen to me, because Hahaue always taught me to tape myself to the ceiling in some far-off corner, but I few people died before the heroes got us free and I didn't know what was happening for hours."

"Those situations are never easy, but you did the right thing, for what it's worth," Kan said. He debated asking about Hanta's father but dismissed it as too personal a question unless the boy raised it directly. "I see you've mentioned an interest in gymnastics and acrobatics."

"Yeah! There's this old pre-Quirk hero comic series I'm fond of where the guy's spider powers let him swing between buildings on a super-strong web, and that's basically my tape, right? I've only ever practice privately, on trees, because of the Quirk use laws and Hahaue really not needing any legal scandals, but I figure UA's the best place to learn it, especially now that I know you guys have fake cities for me to practice my swinging! It's totally sweet!"

"Though you didn't have the most auspicious start, to judge from your attempt during your practical exam," Kan noted.

"Yeah… I flipped wrong, got tied up in my tape, and lost like three minutes getting free. I figure I'm really lucky I still placed in the mid-20s and got in."

"You creatively used your Quirk in a combat situation to incapacitate enemies, and when an unexpected situation arose, you improvised to fill a need. That improvisation backfired with negative consequences, but you dealt with them efficiently instead of giving up, and you continued with your task as soon as you were able. Pro Heroes are often placed in similar situations."

"Thanks, sensei. That's nice to hear."

"You might also care to know that the student who cut you free passed as well, and is enrolled in 1-B."

"Really? Sweet! Thanks for telling me, sensei; I'll definitely swing by to give Kamakiri-san my thanks. You think I should bring a gift?"

Kan hesitated and cast back through his experience with social interactions in a similar vein to dig out a good answer.

"Either offering to buy him a drink or inviting him to train with you should suffice, in my experience," he advised.

"Will do!"

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Ohayo gozaimasu, Kan-sensei! Did I pronounce that properly?" Yuga Aoyama inquired as he flounced from the doorway to the empty seat Kan had gestured him toward.

"Yes. Thank you for taking time from your lunch break to have this discussion with me."

"Non, non! I brought my lunch from home for today, so I won't be missing out yet."

Kan declined to comment on this and instead said, "You've been living in Japan for a few months, I understand."

"For a few months each year for most of my life," Yuga corrected. "Are you familiar with the French school year, Kan-sensei? There's a 2-month break from the end of one school year until the next one begins that September. We almost always came to visit my father's parents for that time frame, and as it coincidentally overlaps with the Japanese summer break, there were often local children for me to meet and play with."

"Meaning you have several years experience speaking Japanese and don't need me to check your pronunciation of a simple 'good morning,'" Kan observed.

Yuga—who had been gesticulating elegantly as he reminisced—paused.

He gave Kan a longer, more obviously assessing look.

"I see I'll need to get up quite early in the morning if I want to slip one past you, Kan-sensei. Je suis vraiment désolé," he said, standing to bow, "and I hope you will forgive me the small deceit. I've had some experience with people less than fond of gaijin, so I thought I might play up the accent to see who mocks me and who has patience for the first week or so."

"Hmph. If you write me an essay on which of your classmates notice and how they each behave, I'll give you extra credit for practical information gathering."

Yuga looked genuinely shocked for a moment before he laughed.

"Oui, oui. If my lack of finesse with written Japanese does not stymie my schoolwork, I will happily take you up on that, Kan-sensei."

Kan nodded and dismissed the subject, next drawing out a metal case the size of a laptop but thrice as thick.

Yuga's lips flattened as Kan opened it to reveal a copy of the belt around the blond's waist.

"Power Loader said the design is easy enough to replicate, and the school will provide replacements in the event that you damage it during training or a class activity," Kan informed his student. "This is one of three spares kept on the premises; keeping it in your locker or your bag should be simple enough."

"Yes, and I'll carry it with me for when we're training," Yuga said, just a touch tightly.

Kan nodded and continued on. "You mentioned a taste for fashion in your introduction; if you want to consider applying that to disguises or to outfit designs—hidden pockets, discrete body armor, and quick-change costumes—I can recommend several people for you to talk to. Similarly, if you want to explore your gourmet tendencies and the cooking skills you've listed, Lunch Rush sponsors a cooking club each year."

Yuga's metaphorically ruffled feathers (as opposed to Fumikage's literal ones,) slowly settled down at the change of subject.

"That might be nice. I certainly enjoy rice with seafood, but it gets to be a bit much, and the prevailing lactose intolerance means good cheese is not easy to find," he lamented, one arm upraised as though pleading to the sky.

"The theater club might also be a fit for you," Kan commented.

Yuga smiled winsomely, his perfect teeth even gleaming as he did so.

"Your Quirk causes stomach problems if you overuse it. How severe are these?"

"Mmm…? Mostly cramps. A stomach ache. Although continuing to overuse it would be… unwise. Not at all pretty."

"Specifically?"

"I'd likely sh-,"

"Language," Kan chided.

"Oh my, I'm very sorry, I forgot we still are rated E for Everyone. Well, I suppose we'll get that T rating soon, considering Bakugou's mouth, hmm? Moving on. Continued overuse of my Naval Laser would see me defecate in my trousers, which I'd rather not endure, no matter how stylish this uniform is not. Will that be a problem, Kan-sensei?" He asked with an almost flirtatious tone.

"We won't force you to go that far for class," Kan said, omitting that it would probably happen once or twice during the Quirk-focused summer training camp. "Just say the word if you need a break during any training session held here."

"I most certainly will, sensei."

2:2 - BATTLE TRIALS, PART 1 - What do you see, when you look at me? I SEE THE FUTURE!
"I AM-!" Every student in the room perked up at the most recognizable voice in Japan. "COMING THROUGH THE DOOR LIKE A NORMAL PERSON!"

The response was immediate.

"It's All Might!"

"It's really him!"

"No way!"

"He really is a teacher here, wow!"

"This is incredible!"

"I think that's his Silver Age costume, kero."

'It definitely is,' Izuku confirmed in his head as
the #1 Hero took grand, exaggerated steps into the room to the teacher's podium. 'Less blue, more red, the round white lines, and even the cape! Oh this is awesome! Even while we were training at Takoba Beach he rarely showed up in costume!'

The effect of the #1 Hero's presence was almost electric. His voice, uplifting and inspiring hope. Every gesture, dramatic as they were almost commanded attention.

Some people had theorized that All Might's Quirk had a mental-social effect as well. Given that Izuku hadn't felt it, while All Might could still command such attention after passing One For All on, the boy could only assume it was the man himself.

'Yet another thing I'll never really live up to,' he sighed, but then he forced the thoughts away to focus on the present, on all the things he could do from now on.

"This year, I AM... Teaching Heroics 101! The basic training you need to be excellent heroes fighting for JUSTICE!"

"Yay!" "Yeah!" "Woo-hoo!" Several people cheered at the confirmation.

"As they say, Make Haste, Not Waste! We'll be jumping straight into the thick of things with our first lesson: BATTLE TRAINING!"

"Awesome!" "Sweet!" "This is going to rock!"

"Hah!" Katsuki scoffed in excitement, even as Izuku grew slightly nervous.

The next announcement, however, chased even that away.

"As you'll be working in conditions like real life," All Might continued, "I expect you all… to DRESS APPROPRIATELY!" With a grand gesture, several shelves with numbered cases slid out from the side of the wall.

"Wait, are those really-?" Someone said with clear excitement.

"INDEED! Hero costumes based on the Quirk Registration Forms you filled out and submitted upon being accepted! Take your case, don your uniform, and meet me in Ground Beta for today's activity!"

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"They say the clothes make the man. Well, young men and young women, as of today, know that you are all young HEROES! I'm excited to see you all looking so cool. So, my zygote students," All Might chuckled as the 20 kids straightened their spines from his praise and attention, "shall we begin?"

""Yes!"" Everyone replied.

The volumes differed. The tones were different. But for that one moment, all 20 students of Class 1-A spoke that same one word straight from the heart.

This was what they were here for, after all. What they'd dreamed of for so long.

This was the start.

"EXCELLENT! VLAD KING, IF YOU WOULD DO THE HONORS!"

The Blood Hero stepped over from the side, surprising everyone who hadn't noticed him, and activated a holographic display from his phone.

"Your exercise today will be a series of 2-on-2 battles simulating heroes responding to some villains' bomb threat. Everyone, find your teammate."

"Iida-kun! Looks like we're together!" Ochako declared, clapping a gauntleted hand on his shoulder (thumb held away from contact out of habit). "Sorry Deku-kun! I hope we aren't fighting against you."

"Indeed! Although it should be an interesting experience no matter what," Tenya observed stiffly. Internally, however, he really didn't want to get hit with anywhere near the type of force Izuku'd used in the entry exam. He wasn't certain why Izuku had held back in yesterday's tests, but he expected to lose badly unless he was very clever in fighting Izuku, should they meet in battle.

"Right! It says I'm with Asui-san…"

"Please, call me Tsu, kero."

"Ah!" Izuku jumped 20 cm into the air in shock. "Asui-san! I didn't see you come up!"

"You didn't see or hear me, since I said to call me Tsu, kero. Though really, Tsuyu is fine as well. I apologize if I was stealthy; I didn't mean to spook you."

"Well, it's fine," Izuku dismissed. 'Not that I'm 100% confident in calling her by name immediately…'

"YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!" All Might's shout drew the class back to him. "Let us begin with a question. Where do heroes most often find the more atrocious breeds of villains?"

"…In big cities, where they have victims, kero," Tsuyu suggested.

"CORRECT! But your answer is incomplete, Asui-shoujo," All Might continued. "A more specific answer, please?"

"In the alleys and side streets," Mashirao suggested. "That's where all manner of thieves and smugglers do their business."

Most of the class generally nodded along to this suggestion.

"NOT QUITE! While the greater quantity of villains appear in these places, I admit," All Might corrected, "truly atrocious villains are most often found indoors! Hostage taking! Illicit deals! Political corruption! Intelligent villains in leadership positions often work in buildings, fortified bases aimed to turn aside heroes and rivals in equal measure!"

"For this exercise," Kan declared, "the two pairs facing off will be assigned to either Hero or Villain categories."

"INDEED! Before us is one such building we will utilize," All Might declared, gesturing dramatically again. "Five stories in height with rooms and hallways in a layout that will be revealed at the start of your preparatory period. For this simulation, the villains have hidden a nuclear weapon primed to detonate within a set time period! The Hero Team must attempt to defuse the situation by either 'capturing' the Villain Team—as simple as wrapping this Capture Tape around two of their limbs—or by 'claiming' the bomb to defuse it, which is as simple as touching the bomb.

"Conversely, the Villain Team needs to either protect the 'nuclear weapon' for the entirety of the time limit, or they may opt to 'capture' the Hero Team, thus foiling the attempt to defuse the weapon! Any questions?"

"Sir!" Tenya's hand shot into the air. "How did you decide the pairs cooperating and who they would be facing?"

"RANDOMLY!" All Might laughed.

"But… that…" Tenya seemed to want to object but couldn't quite verbalize it.

"Iida-kun, you know," Izuku informed him, "since pros in real life have to team up based on random chance involving who's on duty near the location, and they can't always fight villains who may be strong or weak against them, this seems pretty realistic to me."

"Other than the fact that the Villain Team would be in range of the bomb when it detonates, kero."

"Actually, I find that part quite believable! It's very possible that the villains are zealots willing to die for their beliefs," Tenya asserted, slashing his hand through the air, "or they may have been duped and do not know what they're guarding."

"It might also be something launched from the storage building at a more distant target," Ochako agreed. "There are a lots of possibilities it could be simulating."

"I can see that now," Tsuyu agreed.

"Our first match will be the Hero Team Eijiro Kirishima and Fumikage Tokoyami against Villain Team Yuga Aoyama and Tohru Hagakure," Kan declared. "Also, Asui-kun, I'll be pulling you out for our one-on-one discussion now, but you won't be fighting until you get back."

"That gives us less time for strategies, kero."

"W-We don't know who we're facing- oh." Izuku's reassurance fell short as he saw that the other four matches had been posted as well.

Heroes Eijiro Kirishima & Fumikage Tokoyami versus Villains Yuga Aoyama & Tohru Hagakure
Heroes Tenya Iida & Ochako Uraraka versus Villains Hanta Sero & Mashirao Ojiro
Heroes Izuku Midoriya & Tsuyu Asui versus Villains Katsuki Bakugou & Denki Kaminari
Heroes Koji Koda & Mina Ashido versus Villains Momo Yaoyorozu & Minoru Mineta
Heroes Kyoka Jirou & Shouto Todoroki versus Villains Rikido Satou & Mezo Shoji

Izuku contemplated for a moment that he'd be fighting Kacchan right off the bat.

'W-Well, at least the teachers will be watching, and All Might wouldn't let anything happen to me, right?' He hoped as much, despite his lingering anxiety. 'It'll be nothing I haven't gone through before already, not with everyone watching. Right?'

"D-Don't worry, Asui-san."

"Tsu, or Tsuyu," she prompted.

"R-Right! Tsuyu-san, I can do some strategizing ahead of time, s-since I've know Kacchan from when we were kids. We'll probably still have the second match as well, and we don't even know whether we're… no, I guess it does say that we're the Hero Team, too…"

"You sound nervous, but Kan-sensei is calling me over so I have to leave," Tsuyu noted. "If you two could keep him calm, that'd be nice, kero."

"Sure thing, Tsuyu-chan!"

"Indeed we will so endeavor," Tenya agreed.

Tsuyu took a moment to nod gratefully and shoot Ochako the barest flash of a warm, genuine smile for using her name before she departed to speak with the Blood Hero.

"The Villain Team will be given FIVE MINUTES to make whatever preparations they wish in their base before the Hero Team attacks! Hero Team," All Might declared, "when you step outside with me, I will show you where to wait and give you a floor plan for the building! Villain Team, once that is done I will show you inside, escort you to the explosive, and then leave to begin the count. After the 5-minute preparatory period, the Hero Team may enter, and must either claim the weapon or subdue the Villain Team within ten minutes. Both teams, follow me!"

"Oh wow, this is going to be really exciting," Ochako exclaimed as the 4 students followed All Might outside. "Deku-kun, Iida-kun, who do you think will win?"

"Judging by their respective performances in the tests yesterday, and Kirishima-san's position as the 2nd place scorer on the entrance exam, I expect this will be the Hero Team's victory," Tenya judged.

Izuku shook his head.

"No, we really don't have enough information about their Quirks to say either way," he disagreed mildly. "It's especially important to know how Aoyama-san's Naval Laser interacts with the other three's Quirks before we can accurately predict anything."

"Really? How so, Deku-kun?" Ochako asked.

"I suppose it will be important to know whether he can overcome Kirishima-san's hardening…" Tenya mused, listening for Izuku's answer.

"You're forgetting that lasers are supposed to be
light, and Hagakure-san is invisible," Izuku reminded them. "Now, if his Naval Laser is actually more like a plasma canon or something, that's one thing; if he's able to shoot through Hagakure-san without inflicting friendly fire injury, then she can approach through his covering fire to bind them with the capture tape.

"On top of that," Izuku continued, "there's the fact the Tokoyami-san's Quirk is called Dark Shadow. We don't know how it might react to the bright lights and focused energy of Naval Laser, because there's arguments that light would burn it, but there's also arguments that brighter lights cast darker shadows and would strengthen it.

"If it's predicting how your fight is going to go," he told his friends, "that's much easier, but until we see how Naval Laser interacts with the other three's Quirks there's really no predicting it."

"Oh! You think you know how our match is going to end, Deku-kun?" Ochako leaned in eagerly.

"I am surprised as well! While I have confidence in my capabilities, and in Uraraka-san, I would be most interested to hear your opinion on the matter, Midoriya-kun!"

"Oh." Izuku glanced at the screens, saw that Yuga and Tohru were still talking in the room with the bomb, and gave an almost bored shrug once he'd checked that Hanta & Mashirao were outside eavesdropping range. "Well, it would be different if you guys were the villains and they were the heroes, but once Uraraka-san removes Iida-kun's gravity, your team will have an incredible mobility advantage.

"The Villain Team's best bet would be to tape down objects like crates and furniture, preventing Uraraka-san from gaining ammunition because they're stuck to the floor while also tripping Iida-kun so he can't build up his full speed. Ojiro-san can probably move much more easily through those obstacles to enter melee combat while Sero-san keeps shooting out tape at range or laying traps."

"Oh wow, that would be pretty tough to counter. But Deku-kun, zero gravity isn't exactly easy to move in; if Iida-kun can't compensate we could end up in a tricky situation."

"Indeed! While the idea of enhanced mobility is appealing at first glance, the force of my running would send me tumbling through the air after a step or two! I would be nearly helpless to avoid the capture tape without a way of bracing or getting down again," Tenya admitted.

"Yeah, but doesn't your costume have removable parts like your helmet and gloves, Iida-kun?" Izuku tapped Tenya's helmet. "If you remove those before Uraraka-san nullifies your gravity, then their weight will still pull you down, but you'll only be propelling one or two kilograms with the same force you usually use to move your entire body."

His classmates inhaled sharply.

"Ow wow, that could work, Iida-kun! You'll still get pulled down, but you'd be like an ultra-lightweight, high performance race car with super-jumping," Ochako cheered.

"Most ingenious, Midoriya-kun," Tenya complimented. He removed his helmet "Uraraka-san. While we have a few spare moments, and our classmates are preoccupied-,"

"HERO TEAM! You are free to enter the building!" All Might declared.

Everyone turned their attention back to the screens, but Tenya handed his helmet and gloves to Izuku.

"If you could quickly remove my gravity, I can try acclimating to the change," he whispered.

"Done," Ochako replied, tapping him with her five fingers.

Izuku quickly returned Tenya's gear before he could noticeably float away.

"Just be careful you don't get caught in any hanging strips of tape," he warned his friend, "but you should be fine."

"I certainly hope so, Midoriya-kun! Thank you very much for your assistance."

"Ooh, look! They're engaging!" Ochako declared.

There was no sign of Tohru on any screen, but Yuga Aoyama stood at one end of a long hallway and had begun firing short bursts at the Hero Team halfway along.

On the one hand, Eijiro's hardened body seemed to resist the bright blue beam without issue.

On the other hand, only two hits had sent Dark Shadow retreating behind Fumikage with a pained shriek.

"I think this is a Villain Team victory," Izuku said as soon as he saw Aoyama begin firing at the floor and ceiling instead of straight at Eijiro.

"That soon?" Ochako asked.

"It looks like Kirishima-san can't really move while he's blocking the laser blasts," Izuku assessed, "and Aoyama-san breaking the floor means his footing is precarious. Plus, it's possible the change in strategy is because-,"

"FUMIKAGE TOKOYAMI IS ELIMINATED!"

"Whoa, really?" "What happened?" "I didn't see anything!"

"Hagakure-san got him tied up in the capture tape," Izuku confirmed.

On the screen, Eijiro spun around to see the loop of tape wrapped around Fumikage's ankles.

"Oh come on, she's right there you moron!" Katsuki complained as the redhead retreated and then drove his sharp, hard fingers into the already damaged floor. "Don't run away like a pussy, you need to fight them!"

"How vulgar," Momo commented with a frown. On-screen, Eijiro tore through the floorboards and dropped to the level below.

"Those who fight and run away may live to fight another day, Bakugou-shounen," All Might chided.

"Not if the un-defused
bomb blows them all to hell," Katsuki countered. "Time limits mean you go all in, death or glory, because retreating lets them regroup and strategize too. He's already on the back foot, and like s*** is this helping any."

"Yeah, I mean… In real life, heroes could call in back-up," Denki observed, "but for the simulation two heroes is all they're getting."

"Hmm! Astute observations from the both of you!" All Might complimented with a nod. "Are there any other strategic comments? Midoriya-shounen!"

"From here, the best strategy I can think of is for Aoyama-san to guard the bomb, firing a few lasers through the floor and walls so Kirishima-san can't approach unnoticed. With Hagakure-san functionally undetectable unless she trips or… Does the building have a fire alarm with a sprinkler system?"

"INDEED! While not all the practice buildings are so equipped, I deliberately chose one with functioning lights, vents, and fire sprinklers! Kirishima-shounen could indeed trigger the sprinklers and attempt to track Hagakure-shoujo by ripples and water droplet trails, but it is difficult to think of such a roundabout strategy under time pressure, especially when he still needs to claim the explosive or eliminate Aoyama-shounen as well!"

"Tch. If the morons were going to have this much trouble," Katsuki scoffed, "they should've triggered the sprinklers first thing when they entered."

"Another good point, Bakugou-shounen! That said, in real life, such an action would also alert the villains to the entering heroes, so the Hero Team's choices may be more realistic unless we assume the Villain Team knew that heroes were onto them!" All Might turned to address the whole class for a moment. "While this is a simulation, students, it is a simulation intended to prepare you for real-life experiences! I expect you all to go Plus Ultra without too much meta-gaming."

""Right!"" Several people chorused.

The remaining minutes of the Battle Trial stretched on as everyone watched.

Eijiro navigated the building carefully, keeping his ears open for Tohru and his own capture tape tightly held in one hand, so it wouldn't be stolen.

While they didn't have sufficiently clear audio, there were several occasion where Eijiro jerked as though he'd heard something. It wasn't clear whether he was running toward or away from the sound each time, but he moved quickly when he moved.

In the end, at roughly the 2-minute mark-

"TOHRU HAGAKURE IS ELIMINATED!"

-he engaged with Tohru and got the capture tape around some part of hers, though the look on his face was telling. What it meant was unclear, but something awkward had happened while they were grappling.

Immediately after that, Eijiro got up and bolted through the halls.

"Oh, I guess he was eliminating the bomb's possible locations," Izuku realized, seeing that the redhead knew almost exactly where to go.

Eijiro wasn't waiting around anymore; with his strength and his hardened body, he tore through several walls and erupted into the room with the bomb.

Yuga shot him dead-center in the chest, staggering the hardened redhead without inflicting any damage. A moment later, Eijiro was up again and charging across the room at top speed.

This time, Yuga shot the floor, but Eijiro leaped immediately.

He wasn't close enough to make it in one jump, but he was closing in fast enough that Yuga would have trouble aiming.

Then both boys' expression suddenly showed panic. The audio system didn't convey enough noise, but there was a moment when they both sounded like they were swearing.

A moment later, it became clear that Yuga must have hit a support beam or something similar, because the entire floor dropped out of the room, bomb and all.

The two landed badly in the rubble, to say nothing of the bomb being half-collapsed in on itself from the impact, and they were still struggling in a grapple contest that Eijiro was winning when the clock ran out.

"OUR TIME IS UP! THE VILLAIN TEAM WINS BY DEFAULT!"

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Take a seat," Kan invited, casting around for a way to start the conversation. "I see you're the oldest of three siblings?"

"I am, kero."

Tsuyu waited patiently for Kan to say something else.

"As an alternative to heroics, you'd want to be an emergency responder or you'd enlist in the Coast Guard."

"Yes."

Kan cast around a bit for a way to keep the conversation going.

"Can you tell me a little more about your family? Were they impressed by your acceptance into UA?"

Tsuyu's eyes widened slightly and she nodded, which for her was perking up considerably.

"My mother and father made sure they had time off and they took us out to dinner with Habuko-chan's family, as congratulations and consolation, kero."

"You mentioned your friend, Habuko," he recalled. "She applied to UA and took the entrance exam, but didn't pass the practical?"

"She might have failed the written as well, kero. Or almost failed it? But her Quirk paralyzes people, so it doesn't work on robots." Tsuyu tilted her head slightly. "I assume UA has a reason for using robots, sensei, even though heroes usually fight people."

Kan relaxed slightly at being on more familiar ground.

"The practical uses robots because they're easier to replace, and it's safer for students to let loose against robots with pre-set and uniform abilities than having to hold back against people who are just as varying as the examinees in their abilities. We intend the robots to be breakable enough that someone with sufficient physical skills and creativity can beat them Quirklessly," he explained, "and we also use rescue points to even out scores and reward people who show the non-combat characteristics of a hero.

"Beyond that," Kan finished, "the entrance exam's practical is only one of three ways to enter UA's Hero Course. There's also the possibility of impressing someone enough to be a Recommended Student, and then there's the option of transferring into the Hero Course from one of the other courses."

"Do the other courses have separate entry examinations?"

"To an extent. If your friend wasn't offered a position in General Studies, then she probably didn't make the General Studies Course's cut-off point on the written exam, either."

"That's possible, kero," Tsuyu admitted.

Neither of them said anything more for a few seconds.

"Is there any particular area or skill you're looking to improve, Asui?"

"I should probably be more versatile, kero. With a mutation Quirk, I don't know whether there's anything I can improve other than training my body, but a future rescue hero should probably learn first aid beyond what I use to patch up my brother and sister."

"We'll have a session of Rescue Training exercises next week. First aid won't be immediately covered, but we can arrange some training for you once we've crossed the first river."

"A literal river, kero? I'm very good in the water."

"No, but there will be a lake from which you may need to rescue drowning 'civilians'," Kan chuckled. "Don't tell your classmates yet, I want it to be a surprise."

"I won't, kero."

2:3 - BATTLE TRIALS, PART 2 - Improving in Leaps and Bounds
"What did I miss, kero?" Tsuyu asked upon returning.

"Rikido Satou, you're with me," Kan called, leading the muscular boy away as Izuku started re-hashing the fight.

"NOW THEN! It is time to begin the review process. I already know who deserves the MVP award for this Battle Trial," All Might declared, "but I'm curious to hear what you students think. Yaoyorozu-shoujo?"

Momo took a step forward. "Hagakure's contributions were irreplaceably critical in springing the ambush that removed Tokoyami and Dark Shadow from the field. Had she misstepped, she would have been surrounded by three capable enemies, but she pulled through and incapacitated the first hero. We were unable to see her actions on the screen, but I assume she harried Kirishima through the hallways for the next several minutes until he entered melee range. While she was eliminated, buying time against a foe superior to her in direct combat as she did is what earned her team the win, whereas Aoyama's sloppy use of his laser would have detonated the bomb early or disabled it in the crash, Tokoyami didn't do anything wrong, and Dark Shadow's versatility could have carried the day, but as Hagakure eliminated him before it could come into play, that didn't matter here. Kirishima could have been more aggressive in his approach, but at the same time avoiding a confrontation weighted against him is not inherently wrong, though it failed to work out this time. Hagakure is therefore the one who both contributed the most to her team and the one who made no mistakes."

"Other than being eliminated," Katsuki tossed out.

"Hey, it if it works, it works," Denki observed.

"Given that the Villain Team were going to be in range of the bomb's explosion, we already established that a villain might realistically be willing to 'take one for the team' in service of their greater goal," Mashirao agreed.

"Entirely CORRECT!" All Might asserted. 'She went further with the assessment than I was planning to... Well, I can't fault a student who Goes Beyond!'

"Oh wow! Thanks bunches, everyone! It's really nice to hear you all say that," Tohru declared, seeming to bounce in place from sheer glee.

Eijiro shifted uncomfortably, but it looked like they'd had some conversation cut short while returning, so there were no hard feelings about the grappling.

There were a couple other questions asked about strategies and approaches—Eijiro had opted to run towards the noise or towards the area he had yet to search, and Tohru had volunteered for the more dangerous job because she felt she had something to prove after her low placements to date—before All Might told the next round's teams to take their places.

"FOLLOW ME!" All Might declared as he led them away.

"Ochako-chan told me what you told them to try strategizing," Tsuyu informed her teammate as their four classmates moved to take their places. "She also said you predicted the strategies of the first battle trial, kero."

"Huh? Ahahaha… Well, I mean-,"

"I'm curious whether you have a strategy for our team. Your introductions suggested you and Bakugou know each other from previous schools."

"That's…" Izuku sighed and trailed off into a low hum as he turned everything over in his head.

Katsuki's Quirk was the first he'd really analyzed, after his mother's. He knew it inside and out. Ostensibly, he should have a plan, but…

"I also don't know what your Quirk is, Asui-san. Kaminari-san outputs electricity, probably more like a generator than an electric eel. You've said you have a frog's characteristics, and I saw your long tongue at lunch, but I don't know exactly what we're working with."

"If we're teammates, you can call me Tsu, or Tsuyu," she reminded him.

"R-Right… Sorry." Internally, Izuku was mildly freaking at calling a girl by her first name, but between her having said that before and his focus on the upcoming battle, he warily managed to put it aside. 'Strategize now, panic later. She's just a person, it doesn't matter what- Panic later.'

"I'll tell you about my Quirk now," Tsuyu continued. "I can jump usually at least 9 meters from a standing start, cling to surfaces for climbing, and stick my tongue out as far as 20 meters while manipulating it like Ojiro's tail. I can also spit out my stomach to wash it, and I can secrete toxic mucous, but it only really stings a little, so those abilities are practically useless."

"You're definitely not replicating the capabilities of a poison dart frog, then," Izuku mused. "Your physical abilities also mostly are scaled down, since many frogs can jump more than 40 times their body length; I guess it's because you weight more and your legs are built differently. Then your tongue… Most frogs only have tongues a third as long as their bodies, so it seems you got a far greater increase… Does anyone in your family have a chameleon-based Quirk?"

"It's rude to ask personal questions when I don't know about your Quirk, kero."

"Aah! You're totally right I'm so sorry that was really creepy wasn't it! I mean-!" Izuku took a breath. "Sorry about that, As- Tsuyu-chan! Sorry."

"Apology accepted, but I'd like you to answer my question," she informed him.

"…Okay." Izuku looked down after a brief glance to make sure a) Ochako and Tenya were doing okay, and b) no one was listening in.

Katsuki was mostly on the far side of the room, glaring at the screen as he ignored Denki, whom Izuku shot a sympathetic look before turning back to Tsuyu.

"Okay," he repeated. "My quirk called Superpower, and it gives me incredibly enhanced strength; I was able to smash that giant robot in the entry exam with a single punch. The problem is, I broke both legs jumping up to punch that robot and then my arm when I punched it, so if Uraraka-san didn't rescue me I'd have been in bad shape falling. Until my body grows stronger, it's a double-edged sword, even if Recovery Girl is on-hand to heal me."

"You can't turn your power down safely? I don't have to jump my maximum distance every time I try leaping, kero," Tsuyu observed.

"I… Like I told Kan-sensei, I've only had this Quirk for a few months; I was a late bloomer," Izuku admitted. "Because it breaks my bones, I can't really practice, so I only use it in emergencies."

"That explains why you did poorly in the tests yesterday," Tsuyu said. "Does Bakugou-chan know that you won't hit people with your full power? Or any power at all?"

"No…" Izuku started off morose, but then it hit him. "Kacchan… He doesn't even know I have a Quirk. We were in different testing sites, so he didn't see me use it."

"Kerogero," Tsuyu croaked as Izuku's brain started racing like a bullet train.

"Ts-Tsuyu-chan, have you ever seen All Might's Texas Smash or Detroit Smash?"

"I don't know which is which, but is there anyone who hasn't seen All Might fighting at some point?"

"The key is, they both use air pressure," Izuku informed her. "In theory, I can hit the air hard enough for shockwaves to hit people, and the damage will be much more spread out."

"HERO TEAM, YOU ARE CLEARED TO ENTER THE BUILDING!"

"Would that still break the arm you hit with?"

"It might, but that just means I need to use my Quirk strategically. Do you mind if we watch this? I want to see how well they do."

"I can watch and talk at the same time, kero. Can't you?"

"Ahahaha… That's fair," Izuku admitted, scratching the back of his head.

On-screen Ochako and Tenya entered the building.

"If we can get Satou-san and Kacchan to line up… well, Kacchan will probably be coming for me either way. I'm not sure whether Satou-san will follow his lead or play defense… Though there's the fact that I'll break the building."

"We'll probably lose points for repeating Aoyama's mistake, kero." Tsuyu said that, but in so far as he could read her face, she didn't look like she thought it was a bad idea. "Are the other team likely to wreck the stairs and hallways so we can't freely move, or will they just fight us?"

"Kacchan definitely won't wait. Even if he had a teammate who could do ambush things…" 'He'd still come for me. Well, that's fine,' Izuku thought.

On the screen, Mashirao had engaged the Hero Team in a hallway, attempting to split them up.

The good news was, they stayed together and Ochako got him with her Zero Gravity.

The bad news was, no one got eliminated on either, as Mashirao proved pretty adept at maneuvering weightlessly with his fifth limb.

Once he'd retreated, though, both teams had a quick conference.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"You're still weightless," Hanta observed as Mashirao kept a careful hold on a crate they'd taped down to clutter up the floor.

"Uraraka never mentioned if her power has a time limit," Mashirao noted, "but even if it does it could take more than ten minutes to wear off."

"Yeah, but time is on our side, right?" Hanta reasoned as he did his best to festoon more streamers of tape around the room, like flypaper for people.

"I'm mostly worried about the high ceilings in here," Mashirao said. "The columns are useful, and we've cluttered up the floor without leaving debris she can float at us, but-!"

Gravity returned, and the tailed boy landed nimbly on his feet.

"Dude?"

"Either it wore off, or she canceled the effect on me. I think they're coming," Mashirao declared, turning his attention to the hallway where- "Duck!"

A floating barrel—'they must have carried it up from downstairs,' Mashirao figured—shot through the doorway to the room at a decent clip as Hanta dropped out of the way.

At head or chest height, Mashirao might've attempted to block or deflect it, but it was flying a good meter above his head and angled to climb higher.

Instead, he set his stance atop a crate and got his capture tape ready.

Tenya bounded through the doorway, jumping from one crate to another.

'He's so fast!' "Sero, stop him!"

"Up to gear three!" Tenya shouted, and then he leaped.

Mashirao saw a faint arc that made it clear he wasn't under Zero Gravity's full effects, but Tenya was soaring well over all the clutter at unbelievable speed heading straight for the bomb.

"I've got him!" Hanta called, shooting two strips of tape

"Not yet!" Ochako shouted from the doorway, and a second barrel went flying straight into the path of the tape.

If the entire exchange had taken more than 3 seconds, Mashirao might've reacted better, but he only just realized the first barrel had removed the hanging strips of tape intended to stop floating enemies when Tenya made contact with he bomb.

<WITH A TIME OF 5 MINUTES AND 16 SECONDS, THE HERO TEAM WINS!> All Might's voice rang out over the comms, and Mashirao groaned in defeat.

"…I wish we'd put up a better showing," he complained weakly. "Good game, guys."

"Good game!" Ochako agreed with a wide smile.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Kan-sensei," Rikido Satou asked as he took a seat, "am I supposed to be answering your questions, or asking them?"

"Both. I have a few questions for you, and I'll do my best to answer any of your questions."

"Alright! I'll speak up if I think of anything."

Rikido was a little cheerful for Kan's taste, so he grunted and made a note of that. The note didn't mean anything, but he'd found that taking notes on his students made them more attentive and serious.

Sure enough, Rikido straightened nervously and squared his shoulders, but he waited for Kan to speak.

"What do you think are the areas I can most help you improve?" Kan asked him.

"That… I can think of three?" Rikido sounded more than a little awkward about it.

"Having a firm knowledge of your limitations is important for being a hero," Kan informed him with an approving nod. "If any other areas occur to you, don't hold back. As for the first three, what are they?"

"My strength, my Quirk's strength, and the backlash," Rikido listed. "Sugar Rush increases my strength five-fold when I ingest ten grams of sugar, but it only lasts three minutes per each dose of 10 grams, and when it wears off I get dopey from the blood sugar drop." He paused. "Hey, blood sugar, Blood Hero, do you have any advice about that?"

"Nothing off the top of my head that would apply to you, but I will inform you if that changes after some research," Kan said, making no promises about how quickly he'd get around to it.

"Thanks bunches, Kan-sensei," Rikido said anyway, laughing awkwardly. "So, the first thing that I'm already doing is increasing my base strength by working out a lot. I… feel a little awkward that I didn't place in the top half of the class even though my Quirk specializes in fitness."

"You're not the only one in the situation," Kan assured him bluntly. "This year, it's been an obvious enough problem that I'm thinking of speaking to Principal Nedzu about adding a weights-based test or two for the future, like dead lifts or encumbered running."

"Really? That would be great, sir! I mean, it'd also benefit my showing, so of course I support it…"

"As I said," Kan dismissed, "you aren't the only student in this situation." He debated dropping Izuku's name, but decided against it. "I may speak to the others, if you're looking for an exercise partner to spot you."

"Yeah, that'd be great, sensei."

Kan grunted and made another note. "As your Quirk is multiplicative, increasing your base strength will increase the total. What else?"

"Well, raising the amount my Quirk increases my strength will also be useful. Whether it's 120 kilograms times 5, or 100 kilograms times 6, the total is the same, right?" Rikido chuckled. "More than that, though, it'd be great if I could improve my time limit past 3 minutes. I really want to find a way around my hypoglycemic dopiness once it wears off, though."

"If there's a medical basis for it other than your Quirk's mechanics, then we can probably find a medical treatment," Kan said. "I stay hydrated and I have a few replenishing pills I can pop prior to releasing a lot of blood."

"Really? That sounds, pretty promising, Kan-sensei." Rikido shot him a cheery thumbs-up, to which Kan nodded.

"Are you settling in at your new accommodations?" Kan asked.

Rikido's family lived in Tottori Prefecture, several hours away, so he'd moved into a UA-subsidized apartment upon enrolling.

"Yeah, it's fine. Everything's good, sensei, and I'm not feeling lonely. There are plenty of other UA students in the building, right? I'm pretty sure I recognized Mezo Shoji, Ochako Uraraka, and Fumikage Tokoyami, though I haven't greeted them as neighbors yet. Do you think it'd be okay to bring them some cake?"

"Inviting them over seems a safe bet, since you can arrange it in class and ask them what they like," Kan opined. "Have you given any thought to extracurriculars?"

"Oh, yeah! There's a cooking club, right? And… there's no club requirement for using UA's gym, right?"

"You just need your student ID and you need to pass an introductory session explaining the rules," Kan confirmed. "Are you expecting to have trouble in any of your classes?"

"I'm not a genius student," Rikido laughed, "but I manage to pass reliably. English might give me some trouble, or math when we deal with sines and cosines—I did some studying ahead, and those just don't make sense to me so far—but I feel confident that doing my best will carry me through."

"That's a good confidence to have, Satou-kun. If you need it, remember that UA is here to help you grow as well as to challenge you."

2:4 - BATTLE TRIALS, PART 3 - Blitzkrieg
The follow-up discussion dissecting the second battle had gone well, and Ochako had given Izuku a hug before he left with Tsuyu to take his position for their upcoming Battle Trial.

As they examined the building's floor plan, (the bomb's location was omitted from the Hero Team's copy, of course,) Tsuyu looked Izuku over.

"You're sweating heavily and you seem really nervous, kero. Is there something else you want to say?"

"It's…" Izuku grit his teeth, remembering the glare Katsuki had leveled at him. "Kacchan is definitely going to come straight for me. All my life, he's had the superior Quirk, along with excellent grades, physical strength, and unwavering drive. But that's why… I really want to beat him this once."

"Kerogero…" Tsuyu croaked. Then, before Izuku could get awkward about imposing on his teammate, she said, "All Might told us not to meta-game, so I think that's a little inappropriate."

"Huh?" Izuku managed.

"This is a simulation of two heroes handling villains and a bomb threat, kero. 'Bakugou' and 'Midoriya' aren't names with personal histories that are supposed to be involved. At the very least, it's a hero's duty to keep personal grudges from interfering with saving people, isn't it?"

Izuku stared at Tsuyu like he'd never seen her before, long enough and hard enough that she even seemed to feel the awkwardness of it.

"…You're absolutely right," he admitted heavily.

"Kero?" Tsuyu croaked, because Izuku's spine had straightened, and his breathing evened out.

'I guess I'm still a zygote after all. If I want to replace All Might as the next Symbol of Peace… I need to up my game.' "I'm sorry, Tsuyu-chan, I haven't been thinking the right way about this at all. If we know our opponents presumably specialize in direct combat, then giving them the run-around and going straight for the bomb is the most important thing."

"So that means…?"

Izuku looked at the building in front of them with new eyes.

"The cameras weren't showing the heroes before they entered the building, right? We shouldn't go any closer… but just from here, I can see through those ground-floor windows. That means the bomb isn't down here on this side. If I give you a boost, Tsu-chan, can you try to peek through the other windows on this side? There aren't many rooms without any windows."

"Midoriya-chan, I like the way you think," Tsuyu decided.

Under his mouthguard, as he laced his fingers in the traditional jumping boost position, Izuku smiled at her.

"Tsu-chan, you can call me Izuku."

"I will."

She jumped onto his hands, and then off of them as he flung her up.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Take a seat," Kan said.

"M-hm." Koji nodded as he did so.

Having known of Koji's speech difficulties, Kan next 'spoke' in sign language.

/Would you like me to speak, sign, or write in our discussion?/ Kan asked.

Koji gave him a surprised look. /Sensei, you know JSL?/

/There are many skills which can improve a hero's actions. I am sadly out of practice./

/You're good, sensei,/ Koji assured him. /Thank you./

/Yes. If your classmates bother you about talking, please inform me./

/Everyone has been nice so far,/ Koji assured him. Not that he'd interacted much with everyone, but he'd met a few nice people, and the not-so-nice people at least seemed less-than-nice to everyone equally, like Katsuki Bakugou.

/Good. On your paper, you wrote about inheriting your skin condition from your father and your skull shape from your mother?/

/He has a squid Quirk, while she has horns as a secondary mutation,/ Koji confirmed. /I have hard bones and no suckers, but my head is a squid-shaped horn and my skin can change color a little./

/Change like camouflage?/ Kan asked, looking interested.

/No. My Quirk talks to animals, but I don't imitate any./

/I see. All animals? You can clearly give them instructions over a range or a period of time. Having a bird carry the softball to drop it 500 meters away was impressive./

/Thank you, sensei,/ Koji signed happily.

/Are there any notable limits to commanding animals? Do they follow your commands intelligently or mechanically?/

Koji paused a long moment. /I don't understand the question, but I can bring you my notes tomorrow. Is that okay?/

/Yes. This talk is to establish a starting point and to answer your questions,/ Kan assured him.

/I don't have much right now. Can I bring you my notes and stay after school tomorrow, please?/

/Yes,/ Kan answered, and they went back to All Might's class.

"Bakugou, do we have a plan? You haven't really been talking to me, man," Denki complained.

"We don't need a plan, stupid hair," Katsuki snapped, turning away as he stalked off. "You stay here to guard the bomb. I'll find Deku and pound him flat, with his freaking partner to boot!"

"Dude-!" Denki tried calling, but the blond had already stalked off into the halls and wasn't listening. "Fine. At least he kept his earbud in," Denki groaned, fingering the device in his own ear.

Elsewhere in the building, Katsuki's fist was itching, and he wanted to scratch it on a certain green bean's face.

'After that trash performance yesterday and his failure to beat a single robot, Deku needs to learn that the real world steps on people who stand up to anyone stronger than them. That's why the #1 Hero needs to be the strongest there is. If I can't beat everyone, I'm just waiting to lose.'

Seething, he stormed through the hallways, seeking out his fight.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

<HERO TEAM, YOU ARE FREE TO ENTER THE BUILDING!>

0:00

"Kaminari-kun wasn't looking this way when I saw him," Tsuyu declared as they hustled closer to the building. "Should we enter from this side?"

"The fire escape will be a bit easier for me, as long as he doesn't have the range to shock us," Izuku said.

Their preliminary gambit of Tsuyu leaping up to peek through the top floors' windows had paid off in spades. Denki Kaminari and the bomb were immediately visible through the windows of the 5th floor, and Denki appeared to be watching the door to the room, ignoring the fire escape on the east side of the building.

Izuku had assured Tsuyu that Katsuki was bound to be patrolling or waiting in ambush, so as long as he didn't see them through the windows they should be able to avoid him.

With that in mind, eyes on the windows just in case, Izuku and Tsuyu hurried to the front corner of the building by the fire escape.

0:09

Safely ensconced in that blind spot, Izuku took one look at the fire escape and shook his head.

"It's not rusted, but it'll be noisy," he said.

"I'll grab you once I'm at the top," Tsuyu confirmed.

0:15

Bending her knees, she jumped 3 stories and clung onto the wall with her gloved hands.

Climbing quickly, she got onto the fire escape and did her best to stay out of sight of the window.

"Kero." Her tongue extended down, wrapped around Izuku's waist, and hauled him up.

He landed quietly and they peered through the window.

0:22

"His back is to us and he's on the far side of the bomb," Izuku rejoiced quietly, though he kept checking his feet for incoming explosions from below. 'Kacchan can't see me. He doesn't know where I am. He isn't going to attack me, because he can't see me.' "Should we break the window? Go in through two separate windows?"

"No need, kero." Tsuyu pulled the window up 6 inches and shot her tongue through.

They must have made a little noise, because Denki turned.

He saw them.

"Shoot!"

0:29

The bomb was a few meters from the window, and Denki was on the far side of it.

*Brzzzap!*

He let loose anyway, blasting bolts of electricity across and past the bomb to reach Tsuyu's tongue as it passed the halfway point to the bomb.

Tsuyu immediately started spasming, her tongue retracting automatically.

"Tsu-chan!" Izuku yelped, grabbing her as she pitched forward and collapsed. 'He got her he was fast I didn't realize he had that much range!' A small part of him complained that Denki shouldn't have blasted the bomb, but the rest of him had more important things to worry about.

'Glass doesn't conduct electricity-,' Izuku slammed shut the window as soon as Tsuyu's tongue was clear. '-but the metal here sure does! I need to get off the fire escape!' He hauled Tsuyu up in one arm—an easy feat, given that she weighed so much less than the junk he'd cleared off Takoba Beach—and clambered down to the 4th floor in a rush.

Then he skipped past and dropped to the 3rd floor because he wasn't sure if he saw Katsuki but he wasn't taking any chances.

0:37

"Dude, they were just here!"

<What?!> Katsuki snapped back from lower in the building, rushing back up.

"They made a play for the bomb, I shocked Asui, Midoriya scampered-! Shoot, they're on the fire escape, I didn't even realize we had one!"

<Did you not read the floor plans you moron?!> Katsuki raged as he reoriented and blew out a west wall window, bursting onto the fire escape.

"All Might handed them to you!" Denki counter accused.

<Never mind, I see that dumb nerd Deku,> Katsuki dismissed, re-entering by blasting in another window and charging down the hall.

0:47

"K-Kacchan!" Izuku yelped and bolted back around the corner. "Tsu-chan, he's closing in!"

"Kero… I need a bit more time," Tsuyu judged, flexing her feet and fingers experimentally as Izuku ran. "Sorry, Izu-chan."

"Dweeb! Come here so I can pound you," Katsuki roared, blowing around a far corner after them just as Izuku ducked down another hallway and through a door.

0:56

"Shocks are no joke." 'I hope that'll hold him, but Kacchan'll probably blow the door down on principle,' Izuku reflected as he hustled across the room, trying to get back to where the floor plan said he should be. "Plan 2 or Plan 3?"

"Plan 3, kero," Tsuyu decided, flexing again as Izuku hurriedly pulled open another door.

*Bang!*

"Stay still you nerd!" Katsuki roared furiously as he blew through the first door.

Izuku scurried through the second door, ending up back where he'd been when Katsuki charged them, and got away from the blast radius while staying in range.

1:06

"I can jump," Tsuyu declared, hopping off Izuku's back and looking to the ceiling.

"Wait," Izuku said.

*Blam!*

1:08

"Dekuuu…!" Katsuki growled murderously as he stalked through the smoke.

"Come try me, Kacchan," Izuku declared. 'I've spent… All that time I've spent analyzing your Quirk and your fighting style, it pays off now. Just watch me!'

1:10

Katsuki roared and lunged for his childhood whatever.

He led with a right hook.

Like always.

'Perfect.' Izuku moved, set his weight, and twisted.

1:11

*Thwump*

Catching Katsuki's heavy gauntlet would leave a bruise, but it was better than a clean hit, and the momentum let Izuku swing him into a rough judo throw.

For that one moment, simulation aside, both boys had forgotten about everything except their opponent.

But Tsuyu hadn't forgotten about anything.

*zip*

1:12

<KATSUKI BAKUGOU HAS BEEN ELIMINATED!>

"Huh?" "What?!"

Both boys were caught off-guard by All Might's declaration, and it took them a moment to see Tsuyu's capture tape looped around Katsuki's ankles, which she'd managed by laying it out where she saw Izuku would throw him.

"Izu-chan! Plan three!" Tsuyu reminded him urgently, though that was as much adrenaline as anything.

Even so, the Hero Team had agreed that a quick win would be the ideal here, and Izuku snapped out of it.

"Right! Plus Ultra," he shouted, filling his right arm with One For All's power and launching a mighty uppercut.

1:15

The air pressure ripped a hole in the ceiling, and in the ceiling above that, and up through the roof.

And Katsuki had a front-row seat for all of it.

'This… He…!'

Tsuyu didn't wait. Before the debris and wreckage had even begun falling down again, she leaped.

Her tongue lashed out.

1:17

<WITH A FINAL TIME OF ONE MINUTE AND SEVENTEEN SECONDS, THE HERO TEAM WINS!>

2:5 - BATTLE TRIALS, PART 4 - A Touching Exchange
"NOW THEN! Are there any questions?" All Might asked his class.

"Sir! Where's Deku-kun?" Ochako inquired, as only 3 of the Battle Trial's competitors had returned with All Might.

"AN EXCELLENT QUESTION, Uraraka-shoujo! Your concern does you credit," All Might congratulated. "Midoriya-shounen was a late bloomer, and is still developing the resilience needed to withstand his Quirk's power! That one uppercut broke every bone in his arm-," Half the class winced in sympathy. "-and I have delivered him to Recovery Girl for medical treatment! I expect he will rejoin us before the end of the day."

"Man, and he did it anyway? That's pretty inspiring," Eijiro admitted, still not over the fact that air pressure had ripped through three ceilings. "I kinda wish I could take a second go round, kick it up a notch and try to be that manly too."

"It explains why he didn't use it yesterday in the tests," Kyoka added thoughtfully. "Unless Kan-sensei sent him back and forth between Recovery Girl and the field, he'd be doing later tests with those broken bones."

"THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DAY TO PROVE YOURSELF, KIRISHIMA-SHOUNEN! YOU ARE CORRECT AS WELL IN YOUR OBSERVATION, JIROU-SHOUJO! NOW THEN! WOULD ANYONE CARE TO GUESS WHOM I HAVE ASSIGNED THE MVP POSITION?"

"Has to be Midoriya," said Eijiro.

"He totally carried the day," Mina agreed.

"Sounds right to me," Denki admitted awkwardly. 'I still can't believe… She was right there, and I just couldn't move when she went for it. It was crazy!'

"I disagree," Momo said, though she kept her hand raised instead of elaborating.

"YAOYOROZU-SHOUJO! I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING WHAT YOU THINK!"

"Thank you, sensei." She lowered her hand. "While Midoriya carried the day in the end, his actions were clearly a desperate fallback plan, buying time for Asui's recovery. As Kaminari shocked the bomb when countering Asui—an action which All Might-sensei mentioned ought to disqualify the Villain team, though he opted to penalize their score while allowing the simulation to continue—she could have claimed victory without Midoriya contributing anything, either by touching the bomb or by goading Kaminari to disqualify his team.

"Due to the reckless release of his electricity, Kaminari cannot be MVP, but he still made efforts to act as a team. Bakugou effectively sabotaged his teammate by refusing to act as a team and going off alone without a plan, though he at least listened when Kaminari reported the heroes' location. Midoriya did nothing particularly wrong, and serving as the executor of the fallback plan was important," Momo concluded, "but Asui still outshone him repeatedly in the engagement."

"I disagree, kero."

Everyone turned to Tsuyu, who was staring down Momo.

"What you think Deku carrying around your dead weight for a bit is worth anything?" Katsuki challenged. "Have some flipping pride for getting that tape on me!" Even now he couldn't admit to being beaten by them, of course.

"MOST INTERESTING! Yaoyorozu-shoujo's assessment agrees with my own thoughts-," 'Even if she went a bit overboard in saying so again.' "-but your own opinions as a participant should not be discounted either, Asui-shoujo!" She twitched, but kept from inviting the use of her first name. "On what grounds do you disagree?"

"I have information the class missed, kero. During our strategy session in the preparatory period, it was Izuku-kun-," Ochako perked up a bit at the familiarity of the term. "-who developed the idea of spying through the windows, after he noticed on the floor plan that almost every room had windows. He was also the one to observe that my tongue could stretch the height or length of the building, kero, meaning the bomb would never be out of my range once we found it, so long as there was even a small hole through which I could reach.

"Without his suggestions, I would have entered the building on one of the lower floors and searched room-by-room, as our predecessors did. Our initial tactics were his creation, kero, even if they relied on my abilities. Then our fallback plan only worked because he had memorized the bomb's location on the top floor and knew the floorpan well enough to open a hole directly next to it from two floors down, kero."

"Whoa. So he provided the brains, and you were the brawn?" Denki commented. "Talk about a reversal of expectations!"

"Tch. Who'd ever expect anything from Deku," Katsuki scoffed.

"You should speak more politely about your classmates, Bakugou," Vlad King warned as he returned with Koji. "I see this match ended more quickly than the last two. I hope I haven't kept you waiting, All Might. I assume Midoriya-kun broke some bones with his Quirk?"

"HE HAS BEEN SENT TO RECOVERY GIRL FOR THE APPROPRIATE CARE! BATTLE TRIAL 4 WILL BE HEROES MINA ASHIDO AND KOJI KODA VERSUS THE VILLAIN TEAM MINORU MINETA AND MOMO YAOYOROZU. FOLLOW ME TO TAKE YOUR PLACES!"

"Uraraka, you're with me."

"Yes, sensei!" Ochako called, hurrying after him.

Tenya settled in to wait, as his two closest friends so far were gone with Vlad King or Recovery Girl.

Tsuyu, who mostly got along with Koji and Mina, decided to gravitate toward Tenya for lack of any better options.

"Iida-san, you're very intelligent," she observed bluntly. "How do you think this will go?"

"Regretfully, I have come to doubt my subjective intellect in these things, even if I objectively remain confident in my abilities," he judged. "Midoriya-kun successfully predicted the course of the first battle when I would have expected the Hero Team to overwhelm their opponents in light of Kirishima-kun's 2nd place ranking in the entrance examination, as well as everyone's observed performances during yesterday's tests. Midoriya-kun much more accurately identified the interplay of variables between their Quirks, as well as advising our team on a successful strategy and providing the strategy that allowed your team to win with extraordinary speed."

"Whoa, did he really?" Denki cut in curiously before Tenya could continue.

"I wasn't here for some of that, but he did most of our strategizing," Tsuyu confirmed.

"I do not at all exaggerate," Tenya affirmed. He spent the next two minutes of the prep period outlining Izuku's strategic contributions in the second Battle Trial, as well as his accurate assessment of the first.

"Wow, man, me and Bakugou really got screwed facing him," Denki laughed. "I guess if you can't blast your way through without breaking bones, you get better at thinking around an enemy."

"Indeed," Tenya agreed stiffly.

"I wasn't asking you what Izuku-kun thought about the battle," Tsuyu pointed out. "I asked for your opinion. Personally, I support Ashido-chan and Koda-chan."

"Ahh, but the Villain Team has Yaoyorozu, right? I overheard that she placed first yesterday, so that's gotta mean something, even if she wasn't in the top 10 on the entry exam. Plus, even if Mineta didn't do great, I still bet he placed in the top 3 scores for side-stepping with his clever Quirk use," Denki argued. "Chances are he's exactly the same type of 'outthink everyone' fighter as Midoriya, while Koda and Ashido are more average, like me."

"I'm still rooting for the heroes, kero."

"Before anything else, I should correct a misconception!" Tenya gestured sharply at Denki as he spoke. "Yaoyorozu-san is a Recommendation Student, and as such she entered under different circumstances, so she never took the public Entrance Examinations! Judging our classmate by her failure to place on a test she didn't take is a dangerous underestimation of her!"

"Really? Whoa, I'll keep that in mind. So, you think she's going to win? The Villain Team?"

"Hmm…" Tenya crossed his arms, closed his eyes, and thought hard about the matter as the clock ticked down.

With less than a minute left, he nodded sharply to conclude his contemplation, turning again to Denki.

"Yaoyorozu-san's odds are based heavily upon the force she can bring to bear," Tenya declared. "Even in a simulation, weapons like a cannon or a gun are inappropriate for use on a fellow student, thereby limiting her arsenal. Similarly, we do not know how many objects she can create in the preparatory period, and we have not yet seen whether Ashido-san's acid is capable of melting Mineta-kun's adhesive spheres!"

"HERO TEAM, YOU ARE CLEAR TO ENTER THE BUILDING!"

"If the Villain Team is physically capable of entrapping the Hero Team, then they will certainly win," Tenya judged as everyone turned to the now active screens as the Hero Team entered the building. "If they cannot do so, the odds are much closer, and I expect a Hero team victory, for Justice Shall Always Triumph."

"The villains won during the first match," Tsuyu reminded him again as the four competitors began to move.

But those four weren't the only ones moving.

"Is that a rat? Ew," Kyoka commented as one scurried around a corner.

"It is the nature of many things to thrive in the deep darkness," Fumikage observed.

"Yeah man, abandoned buildings are perfect homes for lots of creatures," Eijiro agreed.

"All Might-sensei, didn't Koda-kun…? Yesterday, he used birds to help him in the ball toss test," Mashirao volunteered. "Is it possible to see any animals he sent around the building?"

"Man," Katsuki laughed, "I bet Private School Girl will shriek like nothing else when the horde of vermin charges her."

"Sacre blue, that would indeed be disturbing," Yuga commented with a shudder.

"Sensei, sensei," Tohru called, waving her glove. "Does it count as a Hero Team victory if an animal touches the bomb?"

"AN EXCELLENT QUESTION!" All Might boomed as he fiddled with the screen controls, trying to show more creeping animals. "Koda-shounen asked me the same thing when I handed over the building plan! Regretfully, no, it no more counts than Mineta-shounen's pop-balls, as unlike Asui-shoujo's tongue, both categories are separate from the user's body and cannot meaningfully interact with the bomb. In this scenario, touching the bomb is akin to interfering with or disarming it, and animals are unable to do so without Koda-shounen present to observe the mechanics and instruct them!"

"Ooh, look, the teams are about to meet!" Eijiro declared with an expectant smile.

The first skirmish of the conflict was… underwhelming, to say the least.

Koji immediately moved to retreat as Mina splashed acid at her opponents. Given the range and amount, though, she seemed more concerned with securing their retreat by melting the hallway's floor than actually hitting her opponents.

Meanwhile, Minoru pelted the fleeing heroes with his sticky balls, but he didn't seem to be throwing them as fast or as far as he could be.

Momo had an air cannon of some form, but while it looked intimidating, the only effect it had seemed to be disturbing Mina's hair with wind and propelling Minoru's balls an extra distance.

"Well, that was underwhelming," Denki complained, as did several other students.

"Do not judge so quickly! The important part has only begun," Tenya declared with his signature hand-chop.

"Eh?"

"Ashido-chan's acid, kero. The Villain Team is testing it."

Sure enough, on-screen, Minoru was examining a pop-ball for damage after he'd just dipped it in a puddle of acid Mina left behind.

He quickly seemed to come to some conclusion—the image wasn't big enough to show whether it was visibly dissolving or not—and threw the sphere away as he turned his full attention to Momo, sidling over to stand behind her but close by.

Momo was crouched at the edge of the puddle, examining several slips of paper and a small device, all of which she'd pulled out of her thigh.

She looked pleased by the results, but less pleased when she stood and turned to speak with Minoru.

The cameras didn't convey what they were saying, but Momo didn't look happy so much as somewhere between exasperated and nauseous.

Nevertheless, the two quickly got moving again, backtracking down the hall toward some destination.

At the same time, Mina and Koji were discovering that Momo had fortified several doorways and stairwells, in addition to setting a few traps.

Mina had been unable to melt through the metal slats barring a few doorways, though the spreading discoloration suggested she'd make it through eventually.

Koji's shoulder rams hadn't initially succeeded, but when they tried the third blocked doorway, he'd had a visible Eureka moment and shoved differently.

The blocked door didn't break, but the door frame did, and he shared a high-five with Mina over it.

Unfortunately, stepping through revealed an empty room and triggered an alarm Momo had made. It didn't appear to do anything except create a lot of noise—the class could hear it through the cameras, which didn't have great audio—but after cringing for a moment the Hero Team scampered off.

It was probably a wise decision, as another screen showed Momo and Minoru reacting to the alarm.

They didn't get there in time, but the villains kept chasing the opposing team with no sign of the bomb yet.

There were, however, plenty of rats. Koji stooped quickly every now and then to scoop one up and speak with it.

Then, for no immediately discernible reason, the Hero Team split up shortly after the halfway mark passed on the timer. Mina broke off in one direction while Koji went the other way.

As the large boy made his way through the building, Mina quickly ended up face-to-face with the villain Team.

This second skirmish was… disappointing.

As Koji seemed to circle around back through ways they'd passed already, Mina engaged, fighting 2-to-1 odds.

Sliding on acid she produced from her feet, Mina closed range, hurling a glob of acid at Minoru as she charged Momo for a fistfight.

Momo fired her air cannon.

This time, it launched more than air.

As Koji re-collected a bunch of rats and spoke urgently, dropping them off in one room or another hallway while he kept moving, Mina plowed face first into a cloud of dust, some off-white powder.

The pink girl got through it with minimal coughing, but Momo hit her with a weighted net as Minoru threw pop-balls at her rapid-fire.

The pink girl tried excreting acid, but the powder started foaming, and she only got more tangled as she struggled further.

Minoru moved in, but Momo waved him off and got out her capture tape.

Mina kept thrashing from her prone position on the floor—she even sent Momo stumbling with a kick—but 5 seconds later it was over.

"MINA ASHIDO IS ELIMINATED!" All Might announced.

Almost immediately, Koji gave commands to a few more rats and set them down to scurry off.

10 seconds later, Momo and Minoru reacted to something and bolted.

With Mina defeated and in an awkward position, All Might mercifully clicked away from the camera focusing on her.

The remaining bit of the battle was confusing, with Momo and Minoru running around unable to find Koji.

"AH! Now this is interesting," All Might declared. "Can anyone tell me what is happening? Jirou-shoujo!"

"It's the alarms," she declared, fiddling with her ear jacks as she fought off a wince. "Momo-san laid out a lot of noise alarms to let the villains know where the heroes were. I think they're triggered by pressure? Stepping on them? Koda is having his rats set them off almost randomly; I guess he and Ashido noticed them on the way in?"

"INDEED! A most ingenious method of turning the villains' preparations against them, don't you think? Any other observations?"

"Sensei!" Tenya's hand shot up in the air. "Koda-kun used the rats to scout out the bomb's location! I imagine he has some difficulty translating their directions through the halls and stairways he can use, as well as navigating through the barricades raised by the Villain Team, but he should arrive at the bomb's location shortly! Once the villains realize he is setting off alarms falsely, they should retreat to defend the bomb, but if they fail to realize in time-! No, I believe Yaoyorozu-san just realized," Tenya amended.

"AN ASTUTE OBSERVATION! Students! After the last battles successful use of the fire escapes, can anyone tell me why the Hero Team has neglected to use them?"

"Private School Chick booby-trapped it, that's why," Katsuki scoffed. "You try an' copy someone else's dumb tactic, of course it blows up in your face!"

"Ashido-chan was nursing a burned hand when she entered the building, kero. I think the heroes tries the fire escape and got shocked by the battery device the villains hooked up to it."

"CORRECT! The fire escape was already proven to be conductive, so Yaoyorozu-shoujo took the first opportunity to render it inaccessible to intruders," All Might confirmed as Momo bolted through the building with a panicked expression, presumably toward the bomb.

On a different screen, Koji had picked his way through the pop-balls Minoru had scattered across the floor, but seemed stymied by an impromptu fence of barbed wire Momo had erected around the bomb.

It seemed like he heard something, or maybe he was just more cognizant of the time, but with a grimace he squared his shoulders and-

"Ouch!" "Oof, man!" "Wow, talk about devotion to the cause. Way Manly!" "Poor guy, that has to hurt."

Koji had straight up tried to charge the barbed wire, or jump over it, but he hadn't made it all the way.

He looked pained, caught by the spikes, but at the same time he'd knocked over the posts holding the wire up and made it to the other side.

He stuck out his arm just as Momo raced through the the doorway.

"WITH A FINAL TIME OF 8 MINUTES AND 12 SECONDS, THE HERO TEAM WINS!"

Momo's face dripped resignation at the announcement, and she trudged forward to free Koji as Minoru backed out of the room, presumably to go help Mina.

"Take a seat," Kan grunted.

"Right! Thank you sir," Ochako answered, only a hint of anxiety showing through her smile.

"To begin with, are there any questions you have for me?"

"Will Deku-kun be okay, sir?"

"Who?" It took Kan a moment. 'Right, you can read the kanji in Izu-ku as De-ku instead.' "I expect Midoriya will be fine. This is his first visit to Recovery Girl of the year, and since his battle ended quickly, he should have plenty of stamina for her healing Quirk to use. If he hasn't returned by the end of class, I'll need to speak with her about his condition and I can write you a pass to come with me."

"Thank you very much, Kan-sensei!" She immediately bowed her head from her chair as she said this.

"We aren't here to talk about your classmates, Uraraka, we're here to talk about you," Kan grunted. "Any more questions?"

"I… would like to review UA's policy about part-time jobs?"

Kan's eyebrow rose.

"They're very rare for students in the hero course, due to constraints on your time and the amount of work involved. I'll need to look up the exact prerequisites, but requirements include good grades, attendance, not missing assignments, and generally going beyond to prove that the extra work won't decrease your performance. Is there a particular reason you want a part-time job? I was under the impression that your scholarship was providing for everything."

Ochako nodded uncertainly.

It wasn't quite a scholarship that she'd received, since UA trained students to be public servants as Pro Heroes and thus made accommodations so that a student's financial situation wouldn't prevent them from fighting for justice, but the term was close enough.

With her family being from Mie Prefecture, Ochako had moved into a school-subsidized apartment once she was accepted in order to attend UA.

With that came additional charges like purchasing uniforms, groceries, school supplies, and the little touches that made life more pleasant.

Having placed 3rd overall in the entry exam practical, Ochako looked like a very promising student, and UA thus had awarded her a generous amount of support.

That said, it was still awarding the support to her, and while she wouldn't be draining her parents' finances as a result, she'd become a hero because she wanted to support them, not the reverse.

If she had the chance to send a little money home—money she earned fairly, without UA auditing her spending—then she wanted to do so.

"I just always feel like it's good to have some funds on hand," Ochako claimed. Then, seeing that Kan-sensei was waiting for something more, she worried at her lip a bit before admitting, "I'm afraid I might lose the scholarship if I can't keep my grades up. I was in big trouble with that giant robot in the exam before Deku-kun rescued me, and most of my Rescue Points came from stopping his fall right after that.

"If he hadn't needed me to help him, I might not have made the cut, and it didn't look like… I think there was only one other person in the top ten with more Rescue Points than Villain Points. I placed right in the middle when we took the Quirk tests yesterday, and while I get good grades, I'm not sure it'll be enough."

"I see," Kan said. 'Well, she isn't entirely wrong, even if she isn't quite right, either.' "Well, I have a few things to say, Uraraka-kun. First, whenever you feel anxiety about your grades or your performance, please don't hesitate to speak with me or with Hound Dog, our Guidance Counselor. Stress and anxiety can negatively affect your performance, and we will do our best to reassure you.

"Second, UA does its best to keep students who meet our requirements. I'll need to review the exact requirements and details of your situation with Administration, but as long as we believe a student can become an excellent hero, we will fight tooth and nail to keep from losing them for other reasons.

"Third," he finished, "while there may be issues with you seeking a part-time job outside of UA, I recall two cases where a student got a part-time position as an administrative assistant or an aide in the kitchen." Ochako perked up at that news. "Either way, I don't think a position will be available until after the Sports Festival at the earliest, but we should be able to arrange something."

"Thank you very much, Kan-sensei!" Ochako cheered.

"Hm. You made a note that you were a fan of Thirteen."

"Yes! It's a little embarrassing now that I've learned they're teaching at UA, but I really look forward to any classes in Rescue Training they teach! Um, do you know their policy about giving autographs to students?" Ochako asked meekly.

Kan chuckled. "Teachers at the start of the year tend to refuse autograph requests out of hand. You'll have more luck if you wait until mid-terms or the semester's finals, to better demonstrate that you're also a serious and diligent student who deserves consideration."

"I'll keep that firmly in mind!" Ochako promised fervently.

2:6 - BATTLE TRIALS, PART 5 - Cold Finish
"Iida-kun, Tsuyu-chan! How did it go?" Ochako asked eagerly as she returned to the room.

"Mina Ashido, you're with me," Sekijiro Kan called from the doorway.

Still scowling—she'd been oddly sour even though her team won, and Minoru oddly elated even though his team hadn't—she marched over and away with her teacher in a huff.

"I once again failed to adequately measure my classmates' capacities, this time by shamefully underestimating Koda-kun, who secured the Hero Team's victory," Tenya confessed unhappily.

"Aww… Don't worry about it," Ochako comforted him. "Oh, and Koda-kun! Congratulations!" Ochako called across the room to the quiet boy, who returned a shy wave. "Deku-kun still hasn't come back yet?"

"I don't know how quickly Recovery Girl works, but breaking multiple bones in your arm doesn't seem like it would heal quickly," Tsuyu observed.

"He was walking around right away after he did worse at the exam," Ochako protested, but she put it aside for the moment. "So guys, tell me how everything went."

"BATTLE TRIAL 5 IS ABOUT TO BEGIN. HERO TEAM SHOUTO TODOROKI AND KYOKA JIROU VERSUS VILLAIN TEAM RIKIDO SATOU AND MEZO SHOJI! BOTH TEAMS, FOLLOW ME TO TAKE YOUR PLACES!"

As All Might opened the door to lead them out, someone else stepped in.

"MIDORIYA-SHOUNEN, IT IS GOOD TO SEE YOU RETURNING IN TIME FOR THE FINAL BATTLE TRIAL! I TRUST YOUR CLASSMATES WILL FILL YOU IN ON WHAT YOU MISSED!"

"Thanks, All Might-sensei. Hey guys!"

"Deku-kun!"

"Midoriya-kun, I see you are well again!"

"Izuku-chan, it's good to see you, kero."

"Yeah, I just had to run a few tests with Recovery Girl and ask some things. Sorry if I made you worry."

"I believe I speak for all of us when I say that your wellbeing is paramount in our concerns," Tenya assured him as Ochako pulled him into a hug.

'A girl is hugging me whatdoIdowhatdoIdo?' Izuku froze and just let it continue until she let go.

"We were about to tell Ochako-chan about the last Battle Trial, kero, as she was busy speaking with Kan-sensei. But before that, what do you think about the upcoming match?"

"Huh? Oh..." Izuku looked up at the screen, remembering which students were competing at the moment. "Unless someone gets very lucky or makes a very big mistake, expect a Hero Team victory," Izuku said firmly.

"You're so certain? The villains appear to be remodeling quite effectively," Tenya noted, as Rikido and Mezo bashed holes in a few floors and used their strength to demolish some parts of the stairwells.

"According to what I looked up, Todoroki-kun is the youngest child of Enji Todoroki, the pro-hero Endeavor," Izuku answered. "We know he has ice instead of fire, but if he's been learning from the Number 2 hero since an early age, and if he's inherited his father's power, then there's no doubt he'll be formidable. The villains are mostly limited to brute force and strength, even if they've got a lot of it. I don't know what Jirou-san can do to fight, but if her hearing keeps them from being ambushed then Todoroki-gun just needs to entomb the Villain Team in ice. Even if they break out, it'll be slow going, and having ice all over their exposed flesh will hurt them badly."

Izuku had experience with icing his own burns and bruises, so he knew how easily it became too much of a good thing.

"Your astute observation continues to impress me, Midoriya-kun."

"Yeah, Deku-kun's awesome," Ochako agreed.

"Kerogero. I wonder who is better, between Izuku-kun and Yaoyorozu-chan," Tsuyu added.

"An intriguing question! It's true, Yaoyorozu-san broke down the battles' aftermaths quite astutely, erring only from a reasonable lack of information," Tenya assessed, "but while hindsight is 20-20, I would not care to predict her predictive ability."

"Oh! Tsu-chan, it doesn't look like she's talking with anyone," Ochako realized. "How about you go invite her over or ask her to guess while Tenya-kun fills us in on the last match."

"I will, kero."

The last bit of the final match's preparatory period saw Tenya filling in his friends on the 4th match as Tsuyu got Momo's attention to extend the invitation.

As a fellow Recommendation Student, Momo had seen much more of Shouto Todoroki's capability during their shared exam, and she emphatically agreed with Izuku's prediction.

Shouto's team was the favored victor of the competition, then.

Even so, no one was expecting the scale of what he pulled off.

"HERO TEAM! YOU ARE CLEARED TO ENTER THE BUILDING!"

With that announcement, the Hero Team stepped in, but they only got as far the first hallway before stopping.

Kyoka knelt down and plugged a jack into the wall, listening.

As she began speaking to Shouto, on the other screen, Mezo and Rikido began discussing something (probably whether to engage or to keep remodeling the building).

After about 20 seconds, Mezo left to go looking for the Hero Team, while Rikido stayed behind on the higher floor.

At the 30 second mark, Kyoka finished her explanation. Shouto put his hand on the wall as she began to back out of the building, away from he spreading frost.

By the 40-second mark, the building was frozen over.

"Holy crap!" "What the heck?" "How did he-?" "I can't believe it!"

Izuku was visibly gaping, and even Momo's eyes were wide as Shouto set off alone into the building.

Rikido quickly downed a packet of sugar and tore his boots free, but Mezo was having more trouble in the hallway, where the ice had caught his feet.

It still took Shouto about two minutes, getting slowed down by Rikido assaulting him and smashing through a hallway floor, before he got in sight of the bomb.

By the point, Mezo had freed himself, quickly backtracking, and Kyoka had rushed him to help when she heard fighting, but even when Mezo smashed the floor enough and tried to run off with the bomb, the end was inevitable.

"WITH A TIME OF 4 MINUTES AND 2 SECONDS, THE HERO TEAM WINS!"

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Ashido-kun, you look upset," Kan said as he took his seat. She remained standing.

"Kan-sensei, can you pull up my Battle Trial footage please?" She spoke politely, but Mina Ashido's cheeks were more red than pink, and she seemed to be trembling on that razor's edge between rage and shame.

'Losing is a natural part of the learning experience, and not anything to be ashamed of.' Kan didn't say that yet, but he kept the words to hand as he logged into the camera systems.

"What am I looking for?"

"I remember the cameras cut away from the others after they were eliminated-," Mina took a sharp breath and squeezed her fist. "-so can you pull up camera footage of after I was captured?"

Kan did so, his expression unchanging.

He hit play.

On-screen, Mina's figure was doused in a dust that neutralized her acid, tangled in a net, and then pelted with several more pop-balls to immobilize her before the capture tape was applied.

Kan wordlessly kept the image rolling as Mina was left behind while the battle continued. Eyeing her frown, he kept watching as the battle was ended and Minoru Mineta showed up to free Mina.

He scowled when the boy's hands wandered to unnecessary places as he was pulling her free of the pop-balls, and nodded when Mina reacted by slapping him as soon as she was able before scrambling away.

"I see," he said darkly.

"I'd have melted his fingers if not for that powder," Mina swore, "but I remembered orientation and how we should report these things…"

"You've done the right thing, bringing this to my attention," Kan assured her. "At minimum, Mineta will serve several weeks of detention and complete a seminar on harassment and inappropriate behaviors. Depending on how he defends his behavior in a disciplinary hearing, I expect it will be going on his permanent record as well, and he'll receive strict probation. Do you know whether he's behaved inappropriately with other members of the class?"

"No… Yaoyorozu was on his team, so if he said or did anything…" Mina trailed off, remembering how Momo had scolded Minoru to keep away so she could apply the capture tape instead of letting him do the deed.

"I'll speak with her and your other classmates about it." Kan let out a sigh that was almost a growl before he turned his attention to Mina again. "Again, thank you for reporting this. Is now a good time to have our conversation about your growth and development, or would you rather continue this another time?"

Kan would probably be filing paperwork and pulling camera recordings for the rest of the day to deal with this pile of **** as soon as he finished here, (which sent his hopes of getting in another student discussion or two down the toilet,) but until Mina declared that they were finished, she was more important.

"…"

"…?" He raised an eyebrow, and she cringed in on herself.

"…I'm not really sure what else-?"

"Ah." 'More fool me. Of course she's off-balance.' "We're here to talk about your plans for becoming a hero, your training up to now, how you want to train in the future, any problems you worry about, and anything you wish me to know in case it impacts your training."

"I still drip acid sometimes!" She blurted this out immediately, then ducked her head and blushed. "Sorry. I'm really, really a lot better at it than before, but sometimes it's like sweat and I dribble a little on my desk-! I mean, I've burned holes in a few shirts and stuff, but mostly I've got it better so I just bleach things? I guess I'm saying I can volunteer for cleaning duty after class since it's only fair. Although. Um. I've got a dance class I attend every Thursday, and I can be late, they understand, but if I pick up extra shifts for keeping Thursday free that'd be really nice."

She smiled hopefully and Kan restrained a smile of his own, though he nodded.

"I see no reason to penalize you for inadvertent incidents that you are making efforts to control. I can place a note in my files about Thursday, provided you aren't serving detention or the like. What kind of dance?"

"Break dancing! I mean, I've also taken a few classes in Latin and Standard Ballroom, and I did a summer course in tap plus I did ballet until I was nine, but ever since I started breakdancing has been my absolute passion," she babbled excitedly. "It's a kickin' workout and it really helps with balance and reflexes."

"Working your passions into your training; always a useful method of motivation," Kan complimented.

"Thanks! I'm not really sure how to kick it up a notch any further though, unless I do some crazy hard or fast workouts I'd be making up."

"Weighted bands on your wrists and ankles are generally useful for strength and stamina," Kan advised, "provided you also train without them so your reflexes and balance can cope."

"Oh! That's a really good idea, Kan-sensei, thanks! Do you have a brand you recommend buying?"

"The school has some equipment to hand, but our policies on borrowing or leasing them have changed," he remembered. "I'll get back to you about it by the weekend."

"Yes, sir!" Mina chirped.

"I don't know if UA has any kind of dancing club, but you can try to found one if you find interested students and a staff member to sponsor you. I'm afraid my own schedule won't allow me to do so," he apologized in advance.

"I hadn't even thought of that, no worries," Mina assured him. "Um. If I do burn through a desk—I mean, I try, but it happens occasionally—will I be on the hook to replace it?"

"With the resources available to UA, it's more likely I'll assign you control exercises if you ever display that blatant a loss of control," Kan informed her. 'Especially given that Momo Yaoyorozu is my student, it probably doesn't bear mentioning that Hangaku Yaoyorozu-sensei handles replacing most of our metal supplies.' "Provided the behavior clearly isn't deliberate, UA tries to be flexible in accommodating our students' needs." 'At least in your first year, when you're still learning and growing. Later on, you'll need to adapt to the world as well.'

"Okay, thanks," Mina sighed in relief. "Is there anything you need to ask me?"

"Does your Quirk have any notable drawbacks from using it? Dehydration? You appear resistant to your own acid," Kan noted.

"I'll get dehydrated eventually, but it isn't really a risk. If I make my acid too strong, it'll burn me, but I've been increasing how strong I can withstand it since I was young," Mina answered. "If I make too much, I'll lose my resistance—that happens before I get dehydrated from it—but I'm increasing the amount I can make and what I can do with it, too."

"It sounds like you have everything under control for the time being, then."

"Yup! Is there anything else, sensei?"

"Not unless you have anything to bring up." Mina shook her head, so they both rose from their seats. "In that case… I'll need to speak with Mineta and Principal Nedzu," Kan finished darkly.

Mina smiled toothily at the menace in his voice. It didn't make her feel in any less need of a shower, (for more reasons than just the dust,) but she would happily take what justice she could get.

3:! - An Election
"Midoriya, I'll be too busy with administrative affairs and overseeing a detention today to speak with you," Kan informed him near the end of the day, "so we'll need to delay our next conversation."

"Ah, yes sensei," Izuku acceded.

"That said, your list was impressive, and what I've read in your notebooks shows promise."

'He doesn't think I'm creepy or a loser? This is great!' "Thank you!"

"I'll be reviewing your performance this afternoon, and your other classmates' performances in All Might's exercise. Depending on what I find, you might have the opportunity for extra credit by assessing ways they can improve."

Izuku perked up even further. "Right! I've already started working on bios for-,"

Kan cut him off gently with an upraised hand. "I'm too busy to hear the details right now, Midoriya. Another day."

"Yes sir!"

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

When the bell rang, Katsuki left without a word to anybody.

Izuku almost followed after him, but Katsuki hadn't rushed him after their match once he'd returned from seeing Recovery Girl, and he'd been interrupted on his way to the door by Tsuyu, Ochako, and Tenya.

"Deku-kun, would you like to go get a sweet treat after school?" Ochako asked.

"In celebration of both our teams' performances this afternoon, I wish to fund our get-together! It would be most agreeable for you to join us!" Tenya seconded with a hand chop.

"Iida-chan is paying, and I know a nice ice cream stand I take my siblings to in the park, kero," Tsuyu finished.

"Oh! I mean… Yes, that's great!" 'I have friends now and they want to spend time with me! And two of them are cute girls! Waitwaitwait I can't call them that or they'll laugh and think I'm creepy!' He had not been tremendously popular with girls at Aldera Junior High, to say the least, but he knew enough to go with them and try playing it cool like he did this all the time.

At the ice cream shop…

"Oh, you sell ice cream mochi! Oh but wait…"

"Uraraka-san, my allowance is more than sufficient to treat all of us! My only regret is that I usually follow my Anikiue's advice on what kind to order," Tenya sighed. "However! Uraraka-san, if you are familiar with the flavor options, I will happily defer to your opinion!"

"Burendo-san, I'll take one cone of the almond jelly soft serve, please," Tsuyu requested as Tenya and Ochako debated their options. "Izuku-chan what do you want?"

"Well, I usually…" Izuku trailed off. He'd occasionally gotten an All Might-themed special cone that he didn't really like out of loyalty, up until All Might had confessed to disliking it as well when Izuku bought him a cone the previous summer.

Beyond that, his usuals were green tea (which seemed boring right now), vanilla (which seemed worse), and cherry (which his Aldera classmates had teased him for not being a good flavor on a field trip, plus it wasn't on offer here).

"Asu- Um, Tsuyu-chan," he remembered in time, "do you have any recommendation?"

"Pumpkin is a nice flavor, or grape is more sweet," Tsuyu reasoned, "but Satsuki swears by their black sesame whenever I treat her, kero."

"Is Satsuki your little sister?" Tsuyu nodded. "Then I bet she's as reliable as you are. I'll have a cone of black sesame, please?"

"Then Uraraka-san will try your bean jam ice cream, I will have a cone of mandarin orange," Tenya declared, "and we all will split a tray of ice cream mochi!"

Tenya paid, they took their treats, and they began wandering the park a bit.

"I feel really silly, never thinking about weighing myself down by picking something up after I remove my gravity," Ochako admitted.

"Of course," Tenya noted, "you confessed to me that you cannot remove your own gravity without suffering nausea, as I saw with your vomiting during the Entrance Examination, so it would not be an issue that immediately occurred to you!"

"Izuku-chan seems to have a good head for analyzing abilities, kero. Am I right that you three took the entry exam together?"

"Oooh, waitwaitwaitwait," Ochako interrupted. "Izuku-chan? I know Tsuyu-chan likes using first names, but is there anything going on here?" She smiled at them both, but there was a hint of trepidation to it.

"I use -chan with all my friends, kero. I can call you Izuku-kun if you prefer," she offered.

"Ahahahaha… I don't know?" 'What am I supposed to say here?'

Tenya took another lick of his ice cream. "Well, I believe the appropriate thing here is to ensure everyone's comfort without spreading rumors. However, I also agree, Midoriya-kun, you have a good mind for analyzing Quirks and their abilities! Is there a workshop or an online course you recommend?"

"I mean… no? Kan-sensei complimented me on it, but I just got in the habit from watching heroes, listening to some other analyses, and writing down things I noticed in my notebooks. Um…" 'I guess I should take a leap of faith.' "I started a new notebook with a few pages for everyone in our class, and Kan-sensei said he might give me extra credit since I'm still limited in using my Quirk if I instead do some improvement analyses on you guys, sort of. If you want?"

"Indeed! I would be most interested to see and hear any ideas for improving my performance as a hero," Tenya agreed.

"Yeah, it would be really cool to get some ideas on how I can go Plus Ultra in improving!" Ochako seconded.

"I don't know what you can do with a mutation Quirk, but I'm willing, kero."

"Oh! Well," Izuku began as he dug out his notebook, "off the top of my head, Tsuyu-chan, questioning whether or not you have a solely mutation-type Quirk is a good place to start."

"Kero?"

"Um… This is sort of awkward and personal," Izuku hedged, emboldened by how supportive they'd all been so far, "but can you open your mouth and show me your tongue? Without extending it, please."

"Like this?" Tsuyu did so.

"Yeah! So, I looked it up a while ago because of this fight between Monogatari the Frog Hero and a chameleon-Quirk villain—Monogatari was a hero who retired before All Might debuted, but they still had recordings of his work—and I learned a couple things. Can you extend your tongue, please?"

"Kero!" Tsuyu stuck her tongue out to about 10 meters, half its full length and kept it there.

"Now wiggle it around, maybe wrap it around Uraraka-san?"

"I'm Ochako-chan to you now, Deku-kun," she chided cheerfully as Tsuyu looped her tongue around her classmate, who raised her arms helpfully out of the way. "Hey," she laughed as Tsuyu swiped a glob of her ice cream cone.

'U-U-Uraraka-san c-calls me a nickname a-a-and she's telling me to use her f-f-first name!' Izuku's cheeks went red, but he let the familiarity of analysis push down his embarrassment. He turned his attention back to Tsuyu.

"Okay, great! You can pull it back now. Iida-kun, do you know anything about frogs' tongues, or chameleons'?"

"I fear reptilian biology has been a grave oversight in my studies, alas," he confessed seriously.

"I only looked it up because of some old heroes," Izuku laughed, "but anyway, that's not how frogs' tongues work, Ts-Tsuyu-chan."

"Kero?" Her eyebrows rose.

"It isn't? But I've seen… wait, now that I think of it, I mostly saw frogs' tongues extend in cartoons or video games," Ochako admitted.

"Yeah, and it's a take-off of chameleon tongues," Izuku affirmed. "With frogs, the base of the tongue is actually attached to their lower lip, and it flips out to uncurl like a noise blower, for parties. Moreover, frogs' tongues are only comparatively long: they usually stretch about 1/3 of the frog's body length-,"

"But I can stretch my tongue a dozen times my height," Tsuyu finished.

"Exactly! Even chameleons only max out at less than twice their length, and their tongues aren't dexterous, the stretching is mostly because the tongue is a hollow tube," Izuku continued. "So there's a definite transformation aspect to your Quirk as well, because you need actual muscles for bending and pulling things with your tongue. It just wouldn't fit in your throat if it was full size, so there's a growth element to it, the way Kick Hero Longleg and Stretch Hero Bamboo can extend their limbs."

"I should probably go see another Quirk doctor, kero, my current one never talked to me about this," Tsuyu reflected.

Izuku flashed back to Tsubasa-sensei, who'd diagnosed him almost a decade ago, and his total lack of desire to see that man again or anyone else. 'Well, I guess Recovery Girl might count.'

"Criminal," Tenya huffed. "Or at least very unprofessional. My family ensures I have regular discussions with our Quirk specialist regarding my development! I would be happy to recommend you, Tsuyu-san!"

"Kero. I don't think I could afford your quality of specialist, so I should try a local clinic first," Tsuyu opined.

Tenya's face twitched.

"Truly, I do not think-!"

"Yeah," Ochako laughed, patting his shoulder sympathetically (pinkie extended). "Iida-kun just has all that rich boy energy, yanno? Oops!" She quickly slapped a hand over her mouth at the re-emergence of her accent, but Tenya was too busy sighing in despair to notice.

"I see… Even though I thought to conceal my origins…"

"I mean," Izuku consoled him, "Team Iidaten and the Iida family are pretty big names, right up there with Todoroki and Yaoyorozu, you know? It came up pretty quickly when I was looking people up, and Ingenium has his arm engines like you have in your legs…"

"I see. Yes! It is true, I am the second son of the Iida family, younger brother to Tensei Iida, the hero Ingenium! Nevertheless, Midoriya-kun, I would still value your insight into the workings of my own Quirk, as a friendly voice!"

"Oh! Well, uh, you mentioned orange juice is the best fuel, so off the top of my head: pulp or no pulp?" Izuku asked.

That prompted a discussion that kept them happily entertained until they broke for dinner and went home.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The third day of school began quietly.

Well, once they were in the classroom, at least.

"I understand a few of you had run-ins with the vultures at the gates," Kan announced once homeroom had begun. "Be aware that you owe them nothing, no matter how much they beg or whatever they claim. UA has official press releases to which we invite proven, credentialed professionals. The rabble out there get their rocks off whipping up tabloid headlines. You owe them no answers, and they are legally required to let you through. Telling them 'no comment' should be sufficient; otherwise, you have the absolute right to request their press credentials, after which you can give their name to UA for filing complaints."

"Doesn't that seem a little extreme?" Mashirao asked, to general agreement.

"Later on, I'll arrange a lecture about public relations, but suffice to say you are all minors. You do not have the stature to make reliable reports, you have not been trained in interacting with the press, and those paparazzi out there are aware of this. If they are asking you questions, they are trying to take advantage of you for the most explosive headline they can manage."

"Man, so Bakugou should keep 5 meters away at all times?"

That garnered several laughs, along with a brief outburst from Katsuki that Kan quickly shut down.

"Enough joking around. Now, I've reviewed your performances yesterday, and while everyone has room for improvement, I was largely impressed. Asui, Midoriya, your blitzkrieg strategy and recovery from your initial failure were particularly impressive, even if you also garnered the most severe injuries of the class."

"Th-Thank you sensei!"

"Kero," Tsuyu acknowledged.

"Todoroki, Yaoyorozu, Hagakure, and Kirishima, All Might also spoke highly of all your abilities in his review. Well done. I'll have more personalized feedback for everyone by the end of the day," Kan continued, adhering to that old rule of, Praise In Public, Admonish In Private. (Unless the students really screwed up, of course.)

"Now, due to scheduling issues," Kan continued, "the principal's office has asked me to provide a list of Class Officers by the end of the day. In extreme circumstances, it will be possible to change officers, but selecting them this homeroom period shouldn't cause problems for anyone."

He gave a mild glare around the room, getting a plethora of quiet agreements in response.

"Good. Let's begin with the obvious question: who here wants to serve as a class officer?"

"Pick me! I'll for sure be an awesome Class Representative," Eijiro declared.

"I'll do it!" Denki called as well.

"I'm willing and able, sensei," Kyoka announced.

Yuga flipped his hair and smiled. "This job is perfect for-,"

"I'll lead the class well for sure!" Mina declared, literally jumping in front of Yuga.

"Let me do it! I'm the only choice here, you extras!" Katsuki called out. "Me!"

"I'll do it!" Minoru shouted. "I'll make all the-,"

"Settle down!" Kan roared. Everyone froze. "Ashido. Sit down."

"Eep!" She did so.

"Mineta," Kan continued firmly, since Minoru was unwise enough to bring this up in a public discussion, "you are not in consideration for any Class Officer position this entire semester, if not for the entire year, and I'll up your punishment to four weeks of detention or more if you keep pushing."

"Y-Y-Yes, sir," Minoru squeaked, shrinking back in his seat.

Behind her hands, Mina grinned wolfishly at him despite her own chastisement.

"Iida, do you have something to add?"

Tenya lowered his hand to stand up.

"All class officers are responsible for selflessly representing the interests of the entire class to the school at large. It is a serious and heavy responsibility," Tenya avowed. "Merely desiring the title is insufficient."

"Yes," Kan cut in, "which is why I'll have you vote per normal methods, and I'll choose based on my assessment of you all if there's indecision."

"My apologies!" Tenya sat down.

"Man, Iida just won't admit how much he wants it," Denki laughed.

"Come on man, be upfront," Eijiro teased as Tenya shook with emotion. Izuku, however, wasn't so sure; he was having flashbacks to times people had accused him of wanting attention or stirring up trouble when he hadn't at all.

"That's enough, all of you," Kan grumped, getting their attention again. "Other commentary? Asui."

"Sensei, we haven't known each other very long," Tsuyu observed. "Won't we all vote for ourselves, not each other? Although I don't really think Mineta being a tie-breaker is trustworthy…"

"Hey, that's right! I totally could be," Minoru rejoiced.

"Be grateful I'm letting you vote at all," Kan grumbled. "That privilege may yet be rescinded."

"R-Roger that," Minoru croaked, shrinking back again.

The silver-haired man sighed with that taken care of. "Let's get the big one out of the way: Class Representative gets the most votes, and whomever comes in second will be Vice-Representative. Last call for commentary," Kan declared as he passed around pieces of paper. "Yaoyorozu?"

"Would it be more efficient to vote for two candidates?" Momo suggested. "That way, a person who wanted the position could vote for themself and a trusted friend, while anyone who did not want a position is free to choose two candidates."

"An interesting suggestion, but let's keep things simple. Beside which, I don't want to make a ruling on whether you can vote for someone twice," Kan answered. "For the time being, one person, one vote."

Izuku frowned, staring at his blank piece of paper.

'I sort of want to show off that I can lead people… but…' He glanced up at everyone who was writing. 'I mean, will people really listen to me? It felt great being complimented on my planning yesterday, but with Kacchan still fuming… He's probably already really popular with everybody, and playing Vice Representative to him… That sounds really unpleasant… So who do I want to vote for?'

'Tsuyu-chan was really wise to point out that everybody would vote for themselves, but she didn't say she would. Iida-kun maybe sounds like he wanted it, but he also might just value the process and doing things the right way, I've had times like that. I didn't get a look at Yaoyorozu-san, but it'd be easier to decide if she had her way with voting for two people… Yaoyorozu-san and Iida-kun look like they've maybe been class representatives already in the past… Uraraka-san didn't speak up so I don't even know whether she wants the position… Oh, who do I vote for?'

Swallowing a groan, Izuku took another look around the room, eyeing everyone's faces. Most people had finished and a few looked back at him, curiously or with smiles.

Izuku came to a conclusion.

He wrote down a name and folded his paper. He waited for everyone to finish as well.

"…It looks like everyone has cast their vote. Pass your papers to the front of the room and I'll count them all up," Kan instructed.

A few minutes later, the results were in.

As Tsuyu had predicted, almost everyone voted for themselves, with one vote, but 2 names placed ahead of the pack.

"I can't believe…" Tenya groaned. "Not a single vote…"

"How did Deku get more votes than me?! Who in their right minds would vote for that nerd?!" Katsuki roared furiously. "Let alone 3 people! I demand a recount!"

"Stand down, Bakugou, or it's detention," Kan scolded. "The results remain as they stand, unless anyone feels their vote is not represented up here?" He gestured to the board.

Izuku Midoriya — 3
Momo Yaoyorozu — 3

Those two names were listed above the rest.

'I-I-I c-can't believe it! Who voted for me?!' Izuku scanned the room as he and Momo moved to the front, and Ochako shot him a congratulatory smile, which answered where one of his votes came from. Tsuyu would have given him a similar nod, but she was too busy wondering who had voted for her (since, after all, Minoru felt he would obviously show Vlad King that he'd taken the lecture yesterday seriously if he voted for a girl who wasn't very attractive, right?).

"I guess we'll need a tiebreaker now," Kan declared, and the thought of actually winning, however inadvertently, terrified Izuku to action.

"How embarrassing… to tie this way…" Momo sighed before Izuku stepped up.

"Ah! A-A-Actually," he babbled, tensing up under everyone's attention. "Um! S-Since I voted for Yaoyorozu as well, I think I-I should just offer her the position." Everyone stared at him, Momo included.

"You voted for…?" Momo trailed off as she processed this.

"Alright then. Yaoyorozu is the Class Representative, and Midoriya takes Vice Representative," Kan declared.

*brrrriiiinnngg!*

"That's the bell to end homeroom, so we'll continue this discussion later," Kan declared.
