Takes place in the OVA canon. Mato must find a way back home while trying to free her friend from Dead Master. That's easier said than done when she's in another world with superheroes and Villains wandering around.
Chapter 1: The Other Selves
Mato felt Black Rock Shooter open her eyes. This left her confused since she knew full well that she didn't meet the other her in the middle of a street. The only thing Mato could remember was the battle between her other self and Dead Master. All around her were people keeping their distance and speaking in English, which she knew very little of. Not that it would help if she did know as she wasn't even in control to begin with.

Mato wondered where she was, but suddenly a much bigger problem dropped out of nowhere.

A familiar scythe-wielding girl landed on the pavement in front of her, cracking it with a loud echo, then looked up at her with a determined look on her face. The suddenness caught Mato off guard, which Dead Master saw as an opportunity to shoot through Black Rock Shooter's guard, kicking her into a nearby car. A creepy grin came over Dead Master, as she stalked closer to her in a cocky way.

Without warning, Master made her move by running up to Shooter ready to strike at her head. Black Rock Shooter moved quickly and dodged, the scythe missing her and embedding itself in the car. The neon green-eyed girl looked around for any sign of her, only to be kicked in the gut, knocking her into a building.

Mato could see Dead Master get back to her feet, dusting herself while she did so. Mato could feel her other self summon her rock cannon, pointing it at her target once it appeared. There was no fear in her eyes as she held out her hand, closing her eyes. However, in the few moments that passed, nothing appeared between them.

Confusion could be seen in Dead Master's eyes once she opened them, which meant that she was unable to summon her skulls to help her out. Her confusion turned into anger as she jumped to attack Mato's other self, dodging the shots fired her way from the cannon. Unfortunately, Black Rock Shooter's well-honed battle tactics and combat experience were not suited to a battlefield where collateral damage had significant consequences. Her first two shots streaked through the air, exploding high above the city, but the third clipped the corner of a roof. The resulting eruption of masonry narrowly missing a fleeing teenager.

"Hey, watch it! You almost hurt someone!" Mato cried.

"Understood." Was all she heard as her other self blocked every attack with her cannon.

The fight went on with no end in sight, more and more buildings getting destroyed until Dead Master finally managed to close the distance and knock Shooter down, this time pinning her leg under some of the debris. The scythe-wielder gave a soft, menacing laugh as she held out her weapon, giving a deranged smile at Black Rock Shooter beneath her. When she tried to raise her weapon, Mato internally flinched as Dead Master kicked the cannon off of her hand.

"Die..."

Thankfully, her planned attack didn't go as expected as someone yelled out in something that to Matko couldn't understand. Both turned their attention to the source of the voice. A few fully costumed people were running towards the battle. Leading the group was a man wearing a red costume with racing stripes down either side and two stripes meeting in a 'v' on his chest. Dead Master didn't take to kindly to anyone interrupting her fight with Shooter. This distraction gave Mato's other self-ample time to free her leg and grab her weapon, upsetting Master even more.

"What is going here? Are they like you?" Mato asked trying to comprehend the situation.

"No."

Mato wanted to say something else but fate had other plans as small round objects rolled into their area. There was enough smoke coming from them to cover the whole area blocking their field of vision. They had to wait till it cleared up to find that Dead Master was nowhere in sight, only herself and the weirdly dressed people. This really confused Mato as to why the scythe-wielder left or who those smoke bombs belong too.

"Let's go find her..."

"Excuse me..."

Black Rock Shooter got into a defensive stance only to see if that it was the man with the 'v' on his chest. She gave him her usual deadpan stare while Mato thanked her lucky stars that the man knew Japanese. The others that were with him stood there in case something happened during the man's discussion with her other self. She did notice one make a comment that she couldn't understand only to get boop on the head by another member of the team.

"What?" Black Rock Shooter asked not moving away from her stance.

The man didn't react to her lack of emotion and scanned the ruined street before turning his attention back to her other self, "I'm going to have to ask you to come with us."

"Why?"

However, the answer became crystal clear to Mato upon looking at her surroundings. The debris from the buildings were scattered around the area with cars either totaled or cut in half. The collateral damage caused by the battle showed how much their lack of self-awareness was, something that Mato should have taken into account as they were in the real world.

"What is your cape name?"

Mato wasn't sure what the meaning behind that was, but the man really reminded her of the detective that came to her house when she found out Yomi disappeared. He could help her return back to Japan, but she knew couldn't in the state was in and without freeing her best friend from Master's grasp. That left finding Yomi's other self like Black Rock Shooter suggested before the man in costume stopped them.

"I sense power in them..." Her other self stated.

"W-wait... really?"

That made a lot of sense to Mato, they were dressed like the Superheroes that are in those American comics her younger brother read all the time. Maybe if she finds a way to speak through her other self then she could explain her situation far better. The best thing right now was to go with them as they were also the cause of the mayhem that was around them.

"I-I guess we should go with them..." Mato added. "And I think they want to know your name?"

Black Rock nods and looks at the man's masked face saying, "Black Rock Shooter..."

...

Taylor was at her locker getting her stuff to head home, listening to the students talking about the recent attacks that happened as they left school. Social media has been exploding over the two new capes fighting one another and the varying magnitude of doll-like beings that the wards had to deal with. And most of the topics posted on Parahumans Online about the attack sounded like Controversy Theories.

The only one that she could get behind was the one user theorize that an unknown villain, who is able to make realistic [at least in the face] living dolls, was helping the villain with horns. That way the Ward or any other hero wouldn't interfere with the fight. It was frighting that these dolls even give the parahumans a hard time. Luckily, Velocity and his team were able to finish off the ones in their area to respond to the cape fight.

The footage that was posted online about the capes were very telling. They seem to have a history of fighting one another, but lacking any sense of self-awareness. The news footage of the aftermath really shows the area really took a beating. And while there hadn't confirmation on the villain's name or who threw the smoke bombs, the name of the cape is the only thing that came out of that: Black Rock Shooter.

That cape has gotten the most attention out of everything, both for her and against her. She can see the reasons behind most of the complaints as one of the people closest to the fight filming almost lost his life due to the cape not caring where her shots were going. The only redeeming factor about all this was that she surrender herself to the Protectorate without a fight. The art community had a field day with fan art of the new cape.

Emma's voice broke her out of her thoughts, "Well, well, look who we have here, girls."

"Can we not do this today? I don't have time for your bullshit..." Taylor was grabbed by the collar of her shirt, slamming her into the locker next to hers.

"Really? I think today is the best time to talk, right, girls?" Sophia said getting nothing more than agreement from the two other girls.

"What's the matter, Taylor? Can't stop being lame?" Emma mocked.

"What's going on here?" a women's voice called out.

"Shit! Oh well, this isn't over." Sophia said, throwing her to the ground. She and her friends laugh, leaving the poor girl to get up on her own.

Taylor got a good look at the woman who was now on her knees with a worried look. She was of Japanese descent with short black-haired brown eyes, wearing a pink and brown jacket. An armband with a bear design was on her left arm. She's never seen her before which meant that she started working at the school recently.

"Are you going to be alright?" the woman asked, helping her back to her feet. This surprised the young teen as most of the staff just ignored her when she gets bullied.

"I'm fine..." She called out, not wanting to deal with this woman right now even if she sounds like she's trying to help and be friendly.

"Are you sure?" the woman questioned. "Well, if you need anything then my door is always opened. Oh right, I never did introduce myself, did I? My name is Saya Irino, and I'm the new Guidance Counselor. I'll talk to the principal about this..."

She had to admit that she was happy to hear that, not that it'll do anything. She never knew that school even had a Guidance Counselor. Not that she'll visit her anytime soon if she did know that she was here.

"Bye... Miss Irino."

...

Mato sat there inside the interrogation room waiting for Velocity to return. It's been a few minutes since she was able to convince Black Rock Shooter to let her be in control. It felt good to finally be able to move and be expensive, even if she wasn't in her own body. That also made her blush when she remembered what she was wearing, which was why covered herself using the long coat hoodie.

Before she could talk to her other self again, the door opened. In came Velocity with a dark-haired and olive-skinned woman following close behind him. Despite her holding it together, she still felt nervous about the whole thing.

She decided to break the silence by standing up and bowing in front of them, "Uh hello, Velocity-san!"

"Good afternoon." Velocity remarked before introducing the women next to him. "I want you to meet Miss Militia. She'll be the one asking you a few questions about what happened recently."

And she figured that he'll act as translator for the both of them.

"Nice to meet you, Militia-san," Mato said, as she stopped bowing and sat back down. "My name is Kuroi Mato. Uh, and I want to say I'm sorry about what happened. I was so caught up in the moment that I didn't tell Black Rock Shooter to watch what she was doing."

This piqued Velocity's interest and translated what she said to Miss Militia. Then it was explained that she was here to be interviewed about the incident that occurred. She still felt bad that she allowed it to come to that point. She really hoped that no one died or was seriously hurt due to this.

Then the interview started and the first thing they asked was recounting the events from her point of view.

Mato explained, "Uh, all I remember is being tied up by Dead Master's chains and a bright light. Then I found myself on the streets and that's when Dead Master attacked us, giving my other self no choice but to fight back. They are not used to being in the real world because they're from a place that had nobody else but them. I think she said that there are four others, that's all I know. This whole thing really confused me because I was at the hill in my neighborhood before merging with Black Rock Shooter."

"How did you come across her? And why merge with her?"

"Because... I was desperate to find my friend." Mato said, bowing her head sadly. "It happened in the 2nd year of high school. We ended in different classes, cutting our time together shorter. We still hanged out... but I started spending time with Yui who I met at my time at the basketball team last year and was now in the same class as me. Over time I stopped seeing Yomi, she was not even answering my calls or texts. I-I thought she was avoiding me at first... but then I got a text from my mom that two detectives came to the house asking about Yomi and her recent disappearance. I told the police what I knew once I got home, or at least I tried too... I was heartbroken to even say anything. I couldn't sleep that night, checking my phone often hoping that she'll text me back. It was until my phone let me know that I did get a text from her... only that it was blank. My gut feeling was telling me to go to the hill where I found the phone charm that I had bought her. That's where I met my other self who offered to save Yomi... I accepted as I wanted her back."

"What are other selves?"

"Uh, I'll have to ask my other self about that..." Mato admitted, blushing that she never did that.

"We are the alternate counterpart to a human that resides in the Otherworld. We have some sort of connection and personality similar to our human counterparts. We can merge with our counterparts when we reach a common goal. They can use our bodies and full access to the weapons we have. It's very rare for an other-self getting transferred into their counterpart's body in the real world..."

"Wait... does that mean Yomi..."
Mato started.

"I'm afraid that Dead Master might have her in deep sleep in order to keep her from hurting more." Rock explained.

"Miss Kuroi?" Velocity asked in concern.

"Oh sorry! My other-self was explaining what she is..." Mato apologized waving her hands frantically. "Uh... she said..." She repeated what little Black Rock Shooter explained to her as best she could.

"This question is for Black Rock Shooter, what is your powers?"

"I can materialize my Rock Cannon that can be capable of firing 20 rocks per second when in battle. My attacks focus more on offensive and evasive maneuvers, having skill with ranged weaponry and great prowess in wielding close-quarter weapons. Endurance is immense, being able to survive merciless pounding, impalement, slicing, bullets, being crushed, grinded, and many other things. That last one is common among the other-selves due to our high regenerative abilities. The only way we can be killed is decapitation..."

"And what would happen if a human counterpart is merged?"

Mato sat there nervous when Black Rock Shooter didn't reply right away, "...No idea."

"What are your plans now?"

"Plans? I want to find a way to rescue Yomi! I'm not going back home without her! She's my best friend! I know my mom will miss me but Yomi's parents haven't seen their daughter for weeks!" Mato fired back with determination."Uh... and I don't want to come back home dressed like this... Uh, sorry..."

"Don't worry, you have been very forthcoming in answering our questions." Velocity assured her. "Unfortunately, you would have to stay here till we can find out what to do with you. You still cause a lot of damage to property after all... I have a few more questions...""

"Uh, I understand..."
...

It was around midnight when the scythe user found an alleyway in between two abandoned warehouses around the docks. Rats could be seen inside trash cans, scavenging for food or running away from her. She ignored the little nasty rodents to evaluate the situation that she was currently in.

Here she was in her human counterpart's world and she wasn't even sure how she got here. And the fact that Black Rock Shooter was here didn't help matters at all. Or that Dead Master wasn't able to summon her skulls to end that troublesome other self's life or to distract these people. Who they were wasn't her business, all that she wants is a way to go back to full power to keep Yomi safe.

Thinking of Yomi being betrayed by the only friend she had after moving back to Japan from Germany made her tighten the grip of her weapon.

The sounds of fallen trash bags alerted her that someone was in the area. Dead Master spun around with her scythe in the ready, only to see a homeless man laying there. She slowly walked up to him, sensing his final moments drawing near. Without realizing, her hand touched the man's forehead, causing his body to jerk around in pain. She pulled her hand away once a greenish fire emanated around the body. She looks at her hand to see the same colored fire morphing itself into a skull, the same one she used in battle in the other world.

She smiled sinisterly, ironic that her name became literal.
