Attempting to Fulfill the Plan MNKh Edition

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Infrastructure Ministerial Candidates:
Additional Notes:
  • Stepan Ivanovich Chistoplysov previously appeared as an option for MNKh deputy in Turn 78 (1968), where he was described as having an education and experience in agriculture, in contrast to the more recent mention of him majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in mathematical economics and working on canals. This may appear odd, except that according to the Perm State Archive he had degrees in both mining engineering and agronomy OTL and worked in both fields, so I guess he's just that kind of person lol. Word of Blackstar confirms that TTL he did the mechanical engineering major and mathematical economics minor instead of studying mining engineering but still got the agronomy degree as per OTL [1], so....yeah.
  • In general, it is worth remembering that by now many people's careers have been wildly derailed from OTL e.g. Balakirev working in oil instead of materials science or Ivan Naumenko (our current Minister of Finance) studying economics instead of literature and linguistics, so don't take the OTL lives of the candidates as 100% accurate to their TTL situations.

OH BOY AFRICA IS ON FIRE. Send the EAF all our best planes! Just, let's hope our carriers groups STAY apart. Are they just standing there menacingly, or are both the USSR and USA actively launching ground support strikes? At least the anti-French victories in the Gold Coast are encouraging, didn't realize the fighting there was still hot.
Current economic instability has rapidly radiated out to Eastern Europe as falling Soviet steel demand in the face of expanded production has contributed to market destabilization. The lack of domestic soviet demand for in effect increasing steel demand has poured over older and smaller European mills significantly shifting local economies.
Well shit. Goes to show, even if we don't outright drop a bracket, falling prices can still cause problems. We need to get those shipyards up next turn!

Rough riding this year. Our attempts to make a lens for a space telescope have practically crashed and burnt, and the super-DUMBO nuclear ciggy has reliability problems. The latter will probably be fixed, but the former is probably burning money at this point. I'd love to keep it going, but if it lasts another two years without success best just cancel it.

Rough thoughts on the department head candidates.
  • Yuri Nikolaevich Khristorodnov Definitely knows his mathematical economics and how to support industry with infrastructure. In Ryzz's camp, if it matters. One worry is he will be overly focused on supporting factories and such, at the expense of population support.
  • Lev Nikolaevich Zaikov Mathematical economics trained logistician and Ryzz supporter II: ELECTRIC TRAIN BOOGALOO. He'll for sure make our HSR do well, but not sure we want that hyperfocus. Would be a great deputy head, questionable as head himself but he's too senior to avoid it unless we promote Yuri Kh.
  • Stepan Ivanovich Chistoplysov This guy does excels at exactly one thing and that is building infrastructure in the siberian permafrost. I do not see that as pressing enough to hire a top man just for it, but I'm open to counterarguments.
  • Anatoly Mikhailovich Zubov Urban planning expert. Vorotnikov fan but not a blind ideologue. A candidate for head especially if we want to give Vorotnikov some influence[1]. Only worry is, the whole reason Balakirev wants Gerasimov out is because he thinks G is not development-focused enough and Anatoly here would be worse. I expect they would butt heads.
  • Raisa Fedorovna Dementieva Anatoly except less Vorotnikov and more Girlboss.
  • Veniamin Sergeevich Sokolov Hydropower and canal expert. Not sure that alone is worth hiring him, and I can't get a good read on him otherwise. Definitely an innovative mind, but not a general infrastructure background. Just doesn't have much appeal.
  • Yuri Ivanovich Litvintsev Relatively junior and apolitical, with a mechanical engineering background. Knows how to make a city chug, but no specialization.
Taking the top 2 with Yuri Kh. as development focused general minister while Lev as deputy handles making our subways, trams, and rail awesome, with both well experienced, is temping. The most obvious side effect is that this would stuff the Infra department full of Ryzhkov supporters and not sure if we want that. A more politically balanced approach would be Lev as head handling long distance infrastructure, while Anatoly or raisa handle urban development. Lastly, if we want to go full nerd kid at Ryzz's expense, Anatoly as the Vorotnikov-friendly and somewhat experienced head, with Veniamin or Yuri L. as deputy.

[1] V's camp is cybernetics friendly, so perhaps putting his supporters in positions of ministry power will make it more easy to recover from that computer critfail?

@Blackstar Two questions: 1, why does Balakirev think G is ineffectual, he is described as "growth focused" in the infopost. 2, What are the most prominent of the "new techniques" Veniamin developed?

Unrealted EDIT: whoa whoa whoa holy crap we finished all three stages of Central Asia gas in one turn. Magnificent!

France being butt hurt and blaming the USSR for the disease outbreak is just pathetic to me. They're self destruction themselves by being so obsessed with holding on to their status and pride. Weaf Africa entering into Soviet sphere is honestly better than France neocolonialism.

The Middle East is a powder keg as always. The USSR in my opinion is way ahead in the space race in terms of unmanned missions and capabilities. Korea is seemingly experiencing rapid economic growth similar to Japan but which much more pitfalls and bumps. They're still hyperfocusing on their industry (Post Japanese occupation trauma....) China got their shit together and relations are getting slightly better.

I'm sure the constant, massively disruptive, overambitious hydrological program to dam every river in Eurasia will lead to predictable and sustainable results, just as much as global warming will unleash the potential of the tundra. Comrade Balakirev is such a great man, fighting the counterrevolutionary forces of the environment!

all in on the conservative girlboss as always, why are we getting rid of collective housing? Yes update the buildings of course but collective housing has strong ideological basis as opposed to individualizing it

Edit: I see we have California Uber Alles man as US prez, fun

America just keeps winning in telescope tech it seems.
The US is largely not even trying for one, the space race is over TM. Well, outside a very basic ultraviolet one. Brown is going to actually get into the space race TM but to a large extent for the early 70s it's been abandoned as a waste of money compared to manned programs and well, utilization of lower orbit.

Hopefully we can finally see NASA get up and running soon as the USA finally gets moving in the space industry.

We can grit and bear the loss of two infra dice and 450 resources/turn, the question is whether it's worth it. Acceding fully to the enterprises is something I like not. The compromise option will have some political cost, suddenly giving people unfurnished apartments will be seen as a downgrade, but it can be endured.

Given that we're only getting 325 R more this turn, I'd really prefer not to lose those resources. Our HI sector is crying due to steel prices dropping pretty low, so we're going to need to do projects to get that back up, which are likely going to be expensive.

This is probably the make or break decade for where Africa will go.

Yeah France has def been the most frustrating western capitalist power we've dealt with ngl. While America has been more of a rival to us economically and space and all, France has been fighting since the end of the war with rebels constantly in the 3rd world lol.

The health crisis sucks and woof our environmentalism got shot lol

The good news is that France keeps showing signs of serious instability. They're bordering on military dictatorship, but I could see the whole thing shattering if WE rolls continue to be unimpressive.

If they have to retract military forces to put down domestic unrest, their colonial empire rapidly comes undone. If they don't retract forces, the government could go down in potentially literal flames (and the colonial empire comes undone).

An actual Red France is extremely unlikely outside the runaway Cold War victory path Blackstar outlined a bit ago, but a non-aligned France would be almost equally good. Even failing that, revolt of their colonies is a win for us.

Listening to the Housing Commission's recommendations is probably the option to take for housing, which I'm saying solely because I respect the expert advice of our highly skilled and motivated commission members and has nothing to do with the fact that it doesn't cost any more money.

Comparative American programs have been promised in speeches by Brown alongside an attempt to land on the moon but his likely policies are unlikely to enable a second space race.
True, there are lots of crises to attend, but let's take a moment to appreciate that in at least one area we won. Not just did better than OTL, but won. 🎉

[]Start the Arctic Oils Program: Feels like Bala is being optimistic about oil gains here. They're not going to be very profitable, even if they secure a limited but consistent supply of it.

[]Prioritize Knowledge Transfer: Generally seems okay? By transferring our drilling improvements we'll be accelerating oil modernization, drilling more oil right now. Good if we think oil crisis is going to come next turn, but this will accelerate depletion.

[]Maintain Domestic Reserves: This takes an alternative approach. Instead of propagating these changes out, we'll wait on investments until a crisis hits. This maintains high profitability longer, and lets us use foreign oil for a bit longer. I'm partial to this option but this does mean if oil crisis hits 1 or 2 turns from now it'll take time to open up the taps.
