Lore
The year is 1956. China is a much different place then today. The Chinese Civil War wound up radically different, where the winners were not the communists nor the nationalist nor the multitude of warlords. No, the winners were Ming restorationists, backed by scholarcrats and neo-absolutists. Following the vast destruction of China, great efforts were made to make it anew, and from these efforts were born the Great Enlightenment. A period of immense growth and change was conducted, as the suburbs and near-urban areas of the Empire were broken down back to arable land, the vast countryside of China given electricity, water, and healthcare, and the cities turned into hyperdense sprawls of business and vertical housing.
One of the premier societal changes was the reintroduction, institutionalization, and spread of the martial arts as a form of dispute resolution. Where the Ming courts could not or would not reach, exam-certified judges would oversee fights. Martial arts temples, sponsored by the Martial Temple Bureaucracy, would expand to all the reaches of China. To act as a sheriff, peacekeeper, enforcer, and advisor, the Guanjun system was created.
The Guanjun system would recruit local fighters, champions all, who were given the Duel Rolls (a record of all fights that were conducted within the village), a ceremonial suit of armour, and a dao. These men, ceremonially reading out the Rolls prior to the fight of all fights conducted by either opponent, would ensure no one broke the law. Further, these men were used to intimidate locals who sought to avoid using the established system. These men reported to the Jinyiwei, bodyguards to the Emperor and radical loyalists, each one responsible for the Guanjun of two hundred and fifty villages. It was thought to be a blessing if one of these men, in their ceremonial armour, observed a match. Weapons are rarely used, and face public scorn when they are. Those dao found on the Guanjun and Jinyiwei are seen to be a symbol rather than a weapon.
However not all was idyllic, as the cities are run by Triad gangs during the night. Those who oppose the state are found to quickly disappear and face damnatio memoriae. Businesses run rampant and the ever seeing eye of the Central Examination Group, the secret police, haunts even to the modern day.
This is your story, and it is up to you as to how you define it.
Mechanics
This quest will be divided into two sections. Roleplaying and Fighting. Roleplaying will be conducted through traditional quest mechanics, where a plan is formed by a quester, votes are done and are compiled. This will advance the plot to wherever it needs to go. Fighting however will be done through rolls, where there are three (3) stats (ripped from a conversion by u/bpmasher on reddit). These stats are:
Qi - Representing health. If this goes down to zero, you lose the bout. Yin - Representing defense. If this is higher than the Yang die, the attack will be blocked/dodged. Yang - Representing offense. If this is higher than the Yin die, the attack will succeed.
These stats will be typically represented as Qi | Yin | Yang. (eg. Exam Style is 2 | 1 | 1)
Modifiers will be added, positive or negative, affecting dice rolls. Members of the quest will conduct dice rolls for interactiveness and because I think it's fun that way for everyone.
Each martial art style comes to a different level of Qi, Yin, and Yang. Below are a list of different styles, and their relative strengths and weaknesses. More may be added as the quest progresses.
