HUNT. KILL. FEAST. The demon had no mouth, yet you felt it grinning. You shared a psychic bond with whatever you summoned, and that bond allowed you to understand even the most alien of spirits.
The Kelpie was something that had emerged from the primordial darkness. An alien world of myths and fables. It had lurked in the deep black pools of lochs, rivers, and streams in the Celtic Isles, long before the first man had ever set foot in that strange land. It still lingered, hid in dark alleys, and preyed on lost travelers on moonless nights.
Can you force your will on such an old and powerful spirit? You observed the gangsters from a safe distance and weighed your options.
The Kelpie had originally appeared as a white horse in Ireland. What if you tried to saddle-break it? Get inside the haunted car, grab the wheel, and try to drive it yourself?
Nope, too risky. You shook your head. It would be nice to have more control over the haunted Beetle, but if you messed up, it would eat your entrails. Literally.
"I'm too poor to afford new entrails." You let out a tired sigh. You were dirt poor, with no access to proper healthcare. Yet here you were, risking life and limb, going against the biggest gang in the most violent city in America.
But this was the path you chose. This was your story, and you would do whatever it takes to reach the ending you wanted.
What if you opened the book again and tried to summon something less malevolent? You tapped your fingers on the book cover. It glowed with a soft warm light, as it always did in your hands.
The problem was whatever you summoned disappeared after an hour. Also, you could only open three portals per day. Your next summon could be too weak to be useful, or it could be something even more malevolent than the Kelpie.
"Better to work with what I have." You decided to compromise and work with the haunted car for now.
LET. ME. HUNT. The Kelpie demanded. It had no mouth, yet it felt like it was screaming inside your head.
"All right." You replied calmly. "You can kill and consume as many humans as you want tonight. But no civilians, only the gangbangers with guns."
UNDERSTOOD. The demon was clever. It knew that it could consume more flesh if it worked with you, instead of fighting you for control for the next hour.
A-list superheroes in wealthier cities usually had a 'no-kill' rule. But you lived in Annwyn City. You couldn't afford such luxuries. You couldn't risk half-measures, not when dealing with a monster like the Kelpie.
"Hunt them down." You commanded the Haunted Car.
And moments later, you heard the screams and felt the sickening crunch of human bones being crushed under wheels.
[] You fought the urge to vomit.
[] You grit your teeth. Determined to do whatever it takes to make your city a better place.
[] You tasted the sickening glee that the Kelpie felt whenever it killed something.
[] Write in.
