The heroine has failed. Woe is she who does not remember the world became manure nor does she remember her own name or anything at all. Shall shoujo shenanigans commence?
A girl is asleep in her bed. She appears to be in her late twenties. The alarm on the nightstand goes off. You cannot see what her pajamas are since her eyes are closed. You cannot see her room because she is not there to observe it herself. The buzzing sound of the alarm is annoying. What do you think she should do?
[] Hit the snooze button and dream of a past she cannot remember
[] Awake. Turn off the alarm. What else do you think she should do?
[] Speak as a voice in her head. What would you want to say to her?
The girl hits the snooze button. In her dream she is a nineteen year old girl sitting on a couch in her highschool's astronomy tower. A pleasant girl in her school uniform. A girl of brown hair and brown eyes. She is sipping hot cocoa with a good friend. Well, probably a good friend. That good friend is ten years old. The friend of brown hair and emerald green eyes. The middle schooler who might be a magical girl or an ordinary girl. How did she get there? Who is she? What is she doing there? The heroine and the mysterious child are speaking but nothing is heard. The headmistress of the school has a portrait of herself. The woman is somehow seems both much younger and much older than the heroine but the dream gives no indication as to how this could be so. The woman in glasses. The woman with black hair. The woman who might be family or merely an acquaintance. For some reason the portrait seems important to both girls but the heroine does not know why. There is certainly something strange afoot. Especially when the ten year dear friend changes suddenly into a rose bush still wearing the uniform of the middle school child. Why is this part of the dream on mute? A chalkboard rolls in from the left.
Oh, the memories, of all the things that shouldn't be. They take you away from all you should be. Don't let it go by as if you agree. Nightmares of the past will fade away. Never try to blame the past for everything you say. You have the power you need to change your legacy
The scene shifts to the heroine instead being a woman with magenta hair and magenta eyes. Her clothes resemble a black dress but with white leggings and black boots. Something seems unearthly about her not even counting the butterfly wings. This time the dreamer can hear clearly. "That was a cruel trick, Sairento. Did I break the promise or did she?"
The unearthly being which resembles the heroine battles a spirit; a spirit that might have no mouth.
Even so there is no doubt there is no doubt there is link to the first half of the dream.
The alarm goes off again. This time the unnamed twenty-nine year old woman wakes. The ceiling is pure white; possibly stucco. The walls are brick. The bed is nothing more than a thin mattress with dirty straw. The thin white bedsheets have seen better days. The red pillow is lumpy. The whole room suggests this heroine lives in an abandoned English manor. The heroine is dressed in red pajamas with green tassels at the shoulders. Nothing in the room suggests elegance but the room itself obviously did at a time long ago. Nearby green curtains are closed. The sound of rain is heard coming from outside the manor.
[] Open the curtains due to the sound of rain that sounds abnormal
[] Search the bedroom for clues to her name and clues to the past
[] Act as if everything is normal. There is no need to investigate
[] Hear voices in her head. What would you like to say to her?
The heroine decides to search the room. She makes the bed. She is still wearing her pajamas. Under the mattress she finds a carton of playing cards. Well, probably there is playing cards inside. There is something strange about the carton. Instead of there being a bicycle symbol, there is a circle with a sun symbol taking up bulk of the circle with a moon symbol in upper left. The packaging looks new. The unnamed amnesiac takes off the wrapper. "Reedington Academy." she reads off the carton's lid. Despite being very early in the morning about seven-thirty or so, she does not feel the chill. She opens the carton. What a surprise that the cards are not poker cards. What a surprise to find fifty-two well drawn portraits with each one labeled with a name. Forty-eight cards are one word name. Four are two word name. She observes that one of the the one word name portraits is a young girl with no mouth; yet does not understand the significance of this.
Instead it seems odd to her that the two of the people have the same surname. "Who is Tsuki Kougyoku? Who is Tsuki Eri?" She wonders aloud noticing the two cards look nothing alike yet might be siblings. Both are girls. In fact all except one of the fifty-two portraits are girls. "Why is one of these a boy?" She ponders but then is distracted by the mystery of the Tsuki siblings yet again. Kougyoku is a woman in a black dress. Eri is also in a black dress. However the former seems fantasy inspired while the latter seems business suit inspired. The former has magenta hair while the latter has black hair. The former is the heroine's age. The latter is ten years old yet maturity seen in posture and and details suggests headmistress instead of a student. Another of the playing cards is a ten year old girl as well though looking at it causes heartache as if the namesake was a real person she might have known somehow. "Who is Ringonoshima Sakura?"
All fifty-two cards of the deck are placed back into the carton again. The woman in pajamas sighs as resumes a search for unknown things for unknown reasons. Oh, there is the backpack. How nice. A white backpack with sewn on plush wings. In the side pocket is her school identification. The photo shows nineteen year old self with brown hair and brown eyes. A photo of a teen flashing the peace sign. It is impossible to read the identification due the writing being faded beyond repair. There is no way to read the name or year. However she deciphers the birthday. "October 13th."
There is a stone statue next to the bathroom's sink. A statue of a young girl frozen in fright. Nontheless the girl shows no recognition of the girl nor seems genre savvy that the girl used to be a living being. Instead the heroine with no memory performs morning rituals of bathing and brushing hair and getting dressed without noticing details such as calendar being being absent. But, more importantly, there is definitely parts of herself missing including but not limited to seeing twenty-nine year old in the mirror instead of nineteen year old.
The doorbell sounds. Someone must be at the door to walk the heroine to school. It is Saturday. It is always Saturday. Every single day. "This is normal." She tells herself as finishes lipstick application. Now she is in school uniform. The same school uniform from the dream she does not remember. The same school uniform except tailored to her older form. This of course cannot be a coincidence.
In the medicine cabinet of the bathroom she finds a tape player. She plays it. The sound of a rooster is heard. She investigates the bedroom closet. She finds many outfits including several outfits that allow wings. Several outfits seem to be Lolita fashion. Some outfits suggest petticoats and frills and bows are not uncommon in her cords. Some outfits suggest fantasy instead of modern day sensibility.
[] Answer front door before classmate gets annoyed with waiting for her.
[] Continue investigating playing cards for clues about her past or name.
[] Has the rain ended yet? There was something strange about it earlier.
[] Investigate manor more throughly for clues about her forgotten family.
A brief walk to the front door. The door is quickly unlocked. The door is opened quietly. "Huh? Oh, uh.. yeah. Oh, uh, I mean hello. Would you like to come in?" The heroine asks her classmate.
This particular classmate has long brown hair and would quite likely be a perfect kind woman if subconscious intuition is to be believed. "I'm Kasumi. I'm here to walk you to school." Kasumi the classmate helpfully informs. Then without further words Kasumi takes a hand and leads amnesiac outside into the odd day outside. Odd if only because the sky is red and the ground is covered in swords.
"Sheesh let me lock the door first, Kasumi." Thus the two could walk to school together.
Across the street a green haired woman in gothic Lolita fashion closes her umbrella then glares at the main character. "My older sister may be a forgiving sort; but I'm not. Perhaps I would forgive you if you rescued my little sister, Mizu." The green haired classmate declares without anger. Perhaps her words are bitter and sad, but they do not sound angry. Disappoint might also play a part. Without any passion the Lolita gestures at the red sky as well as the hundreds of swords scattered around. "This is your fault."
"Er, I'm sorry." The hero apologizes. She cannot remember her own classmates. This is sad news to her. Thanks to the playing cards perhaps she can however remember her own name if she tries to though.
[] She should ignore the Lolita and go to school anyhow with both classmates.
[] She should have a discussion with the Lolita to solve the mystery of the sky.
[] She should be able to deduce her own name due to playing cards research.
-[] Akane
-[] Kougyoku
-[] Kurenai
A puzzle. There's a reason I chose those three names. But it is really easy to pick the correct answer. I will have a scene for any of the names, but only one will be right. She will know if the answer is wrong.
Actually, not sure what name is the right one. Anyway, a little bit of google-fu shows that they all mean red or similar color, and that Japan had an empress named Kougyoku. Also, Kurenai only sometimes used as a name. Do someone have a solution?
Without one, I think it will be better to:
[X] She should have a discussion with the Lolita to solve the mystery of the sky.
Also, do we play as Sairento or as someone else? Is it still possible to speak with the heroine now if needed?
We shall always play as the heroine. This is not one of those quests that allow voters to play other characters. The other question you posed is more interesting. Even if that is not one of the choices, presume you may use your vote however you would like to speak directly to the main character. You can always speak with the heroine with your votes. With that in mind, should you wish to, we could speak with Sairento in dream or in school via having the heroine interact with her. I do not consider it a spoiler to say Sairento can write even though she cannot talk. She can hear perfectly but might be considered magically mute.
That should answer your questions. But as a bonus I will also tell you that quick approximate google-fu was used to name all of the possible fifty-two characters. There is no such thing as coincidence in this world.
"Go on to school without us Kasumi." the heroine says after a pause to digest and ponder the situation that was just presented. The words might be borne out of curiosity but they were probably instead borne out of a do-gooder sense of morality and responsibility. Any accusations of playing hooky are meaningless since this situation is ultimately justified. Yes, she has a good reason to not go to the school quite yet. Perhaps later a reason and/or necessity will take her to that location one way or another.
As Kasumi leaves, the Lolita introduces herself. "I am known as Ame-warashi. I would not be surprised if you forgot that." Her words spark some flicker of recognition but she then could be heard muttering quietly a few odd statements. "Though perhaps just Ame in this world where we all are warashi. But fudge that, my name is Ame-warashi and always has been. I won't let the headmistress or this weirdo dictate reality." After the muttering Ame-warashi pulls a photo out of her pocket. She shows the photo calmly.
The girl in the photo is the stone statue young girl next to bathroom sink. "I've seen that girl. I suppose I can remember earlier this morning. She is a statue. I would welcome an explanation of how she got that way and more importantly how to free her." Of course that for that to work one has to presume the stone statue really is Mizu instead of just identical. More happened in the bathroom then just spotting statue of course.
Both girls go into the English manor, Ame-warashi leading to statue without answering the hero. The brief journey could easily have felt annoying due to answers not being given. At last the quiet gets broken. "What else did you find in this room? Please tell me." Ame-warashi seems at least a little kinder at discovering her sister safe. Her glances at shower and sink and even toilet imply she knows more than can be expressed quickly. Her suppressed laughter at the toilet even existing in the manor conveys some sort of inside joke.
"I found a tape player. The recorded crow just confuses me." What else could be said. Isn't that succinct? Well perhaps it is not so the heroine adds what could also be said to clear up misunderstanding. "By that, I mean a rooster crowing at dawn sound. I do not mean a crow cawing." She might as well try not get further embarrassed by giving extensive misleading or incomplete information.
The green-haired girl looks at the photo and contemplates the new information. "Mizu is my younger sister. Her hair is pink. What we need is mandrake to free her. By that I do not mean an anthromorphic fowl gentleman." She places the photo away. She points a finger at the sink. "It will only continue to rain swords until we rescue Mizu." She lectures the hero without looking at her.
Even though that explanation might seem illogical it is the only explanation.. somehow. The do-gooder resists whatever small instinct there is to sigh. Was what was said so far helpful? "I still wonder why the sky is red. I still wonder why my memories are gone. My mind doesn't know anything but my body does."
[] The only sensible thing to do is to smash the sink with a sledgehammer.
[] The only sensible thing to do is to check the whole school for mandrake.
[] The heroine hears voices in her head. What would you like to say if so?
[] The only sensible thing to do is to demand to know more about the sky.
"Why is the sky red?" The main character demands to know.
Obviously the demand would not cause joy in the mind of a girl peeved at aforementioned main character. "You! Did! This!" Ame emphasizes each of the three words with a poke at heroine's ribs using the umbrella. Luckily after that the. Lolita does explain without poking further. "Once upon a time there was a ten year old magical girl named Ringonoshima Sakura and she was really close friends with a magical guardian named Tsuki Kyougyoku. How does this pertain to the issue? Oh just the fact this story has an unfortunate epilogue ten years later." There is a pause then the Lolita continues. "You jumped off a building because Ringonoshima didn't show up. I suspect your sister sabotaged the meeting. You couldn't have died and you didn't die. It is that simple." At last she looks at Tsuki Kougyoku (for that is the heroine's name) with acceptance yet not forgiveness. "My best friend Hana cries often because flowers cannot get the proper rain. Kasumi acts kind but she as well misses our sister Mizu who was responsible for the water in this world."
Understanding doesn't dawn yet. Heroine takes Ame by her hand and leads her to a portrait of headmistress Tsuki Eri. "My little sister is human." This is a fact even if memories of her are gone.
"Nobody ever said you were human or that you were ever human." Ame is not being cruel to be mean. Ame is being cruel just by being blunt. "No one at Reedington except Tsuki Eri and Ringonoshima Sakura are human. That so called sister was your creator, not your actual sibling. Didn't you find it odd Dean Hoshi Taiyoreki is the same age as us? Did you think nineteen year old deans were normal?"
Kougyoku doesn't remember the dean or anybody else. When she looks at the playing cards for Hoshi Taiyoreki she discovers a silver haired man in white clothes with large white wings. "Eh?" No easy answers found so cards placed away. "I still do not understand."
None of the answers so far give rational explanation for an apocalypse. One answer not given but deduced is that the heroine is technically sexless but identifies as female. Kougyoku is not anatomically correct. Golem? Construct? She rubs her temples trying to remember. "Fifty spirits. Two humans. Sakura passed all the tests of my.. er mistress? Sister? Associate?" Yet in the end either she or Sakura could not did not would not have the tea party in rooftop cafe. Take some deep breathes. Take some time to mentally calm. "The world needs spirits. Maybe my best friend tried to make a world where we could all be friends. Maybe my best friend tried to make a world where humans and spirits were friends instead of mistress and servants." What use is there in guesses? What use is there in wondering? What use is there in humanity?
Ame is silent at first then she boops Kougyoku on the nose. "No world can survive without spirits. This is not quite a realm and not quite a figment of dream. And trust me, I'd know if it was just a dream. This place is the real world for all purposes. If Ringonoshima was twenty instead of ten maybe you just didn't recognize her. Maybe it was she who unleashed this reality but all of us are the protagonist of our own story. This reality is your fault not hers in the aspect that I wonder how much your amnesia is your own doing and how much is penance so you may save my sister and a few other classmates. You paid equivalent exchange so you could save them. Not necessarily will, but could. Do you remember the word hitsuzen? You paid a price to keep all, including yourself, from ceasing to exist. Maybe you wanted to save Sakura's life. I have no preconceived notions or knowledge whether you were being selfish or selfless in your actions."
[] She does remember the word hitsuzen and all that entails and means
[] She doesn't remember. She just wants more explanation about the sky
[] She wants to focus on task. Save Mizu from remaining frozen in stone!
[] She needs your input everyone. What would you like to say to her now?
