It is unknown what caused the return of magic in the middle of the 19th century. Perhaps a strange saying in the streets of London. Perhaps the breaking of several millennia of wear and tear. Perhaps the corruption of TEETHBRANCHMOONRAIN was enough to break it. Perhaps the Atlanteans had set their grand construction to end and we were here just in time. Perhaps all of these reasons or none of them. No one yet knows.
With the end of barriers, with the piercing of protections and with the doors opened a grand new world was born.

While many individual points are used to pinpoint the return of magic, it is inarguable that the event which first showed its importance was the occult assassination and rescuing of Lincoln. The Assassin, John Wilkes Booth, was mostly pulling on latent occult power, but his attempt to ward off suspicion as well as other futile fumblings at killing Lincoln throughout the Traitor Territories ended up causing the assassination attempt to be noticed by the Spindly Trickster.
The Spindly Trickster was climatized relatively early compared to most Ethereals. Almost immediately, he used his connection with WEBS to investigate locations and events of important magical significance. He figured out that their was a large amount of occult chaos around the President and so headed to sort it out.
His timing was incredibly fortuitous. He discovered that there were serious threats to Lincoln's life being backed extensively with the aid of SPEECH. He intervened with simple castings of net and managed to save the life of the President by catching the bullet before it killed the President. He took credit for the mess of spider silk which had stopped a bullet and then petitioned Lincoln and Congress to establish a new Agency under his auspices to investigate occult threats.
It marked a dramatic break with the past. The Spindly Trickster's intervention was crucial to Lincoln's safety. He was also the first Ethereal to be both stable and interventionist enough to make a significant contribution to World Affairs. Just as important as ensuring Lincoln's safety though was that the creation of the Magic Detective's Agency at his behest structured America's ability to respond during the Decade of Return. While he did not lead it, due to both racial and ethereal distrust denying him the position, he was put in a leadership role where he remains to this day...
