  • [X] Roland will accompany Aina, with Esha, Zaia, and Inge for both magical support and the knowledge they bring to the endeavor, along with Tom and Wanderer for their strength at arms, should matters go poorly. We'll ask Wanderer not to tell anyone of the ritual, as knowledge of its use could endanger Aina.

Arc 13 Post 8: Prices to Pay
Prices to Pay

Tenth Day of Elnu-Hamba (Elnu Descendent), 1349 A. L. (After Landfall)

When you agreed to this you had expected a work of subtle craft, some hidden invocation in the dark, some call the powers of the deep earth in the dark below, akin perhaps to the call to the spirit of Onogu Iranea from his unquiet grave. What you had not expected was for you and Tom to be standing sheepishly close in what seems to be some kind of vestibule that in better times had served the maids of the princess, as can be seen by the linen wraps too simple perhaps to have tempted looters, or perhaps removed. Esha does not seem the least surprised to be shown to such a chamber and to Inge one corner of a palace is much the same as another. She had hesitantly admitted yesterday that she just wanted to be some place warm again 'where words don't flutter from wall to wall like startled bats' Though you cannot read Wanderer's face as well as any of the others it is clear he understands the danger here.

The Knikut, at least those tribes you have so far met, do not see the Neverborn as creatures apart from the world, but as spirits just as they would see the fey or the dead, foul and ancient, but in their eyes there's reason to wade even though the most fetid waters to save a drowning soul. Not for the first time you wonder if they might be wiser than more 'civilized' folk would account for.

Neverborn, means they had never been alive under the sun yet here and how Aina reaches out for the red stained rope adorned with many bells, each carved from the bones of beast and bird and fish you wonder what it is to be Neverborn... yet not.

The bells sound cold, like the clanking of stones down a long deep shaft out of sight... out of hearing, then comes the patter of soft feet and a voice from the walls: "What does mistress want?" Meek it sounds, almost fearful, though under it you can hear something darker.

"I am not your mistress, we have a bargain one with the other, the one that holds you to this place when you choose to abide, that gives you form and substance. You drink of the mead of warriors and eat the domodah made by the lady of the House..."

"Which are you then?" the spirit asks waspishly. "You come with hosts an bearing fire, yet you call on us as a girl who has not yet met the moon."

"I call you by the manner than I know, for I was never taught another," the princess replies as you look tither and yon for some sign of the spirit, holding your shield at the ready to throw in front of Aina as best you can. How are you meant to guard against what you cannot see?

"Then you have been taught folly!" the scream suddenly echoes down the long corridors, so looud is must surely have carried far and wind through the echoing corridors. Aina had sent away as many of the servants as she could without suspicion from the west of the palace, but what does that count beside a howling banshee? "If you would have our aid in battle than you have come too late, if you would beg our mercy than you have come too early. The First world is past, the Third has Yet to Be! Blood in blood shall be paid!"

"Blood has already been paid, much blood and suffering, Adi, Obari, father, nana Luaza, all of them are dead, gone, all of them gristle to the mill of the evil that has come here. If you still be anything of the spirit that braided my fair when i was a girl and sang away the nightmares when the storm blew in help me now or hold your peace...." the words are not a command but pleading and yet for all of that they seem to have some power.

Slowly, agonizingly the stone on the far wall began to flow into the shape of a crude face, its eyes deep pits and lipless mouth opening wide as though in a silent scream. "A bargain then, let us walk freely under the light of day, break the secret and reveal that which was hidden in the time of Kor that we may be known as king's kin and I shall tell you how to find those you seek, how to cut off the head of the beast. "

At this Aina is frozen in shock and indecision. To reveal to all what she has just recently told you in confidence, that her kin had made servants out of the spirits of the slain. Worse yet she did not know how the spirit who offered her the bargain had been touched by the darkness.

Before she could answer there was a call on the other side of the heavy doors leading into the apartments, then the thump of someone trying to push their way in. "What on Ashinu's green earth is happening there?" you hear one voice call, a young one, and those that answer it aren't much different.

What do you do?

OOC: Your rolls were very swingy this time around.

Wait, we are compleatly, totally innocente!
...at least Esha with the Aspect of Innocence states so...

I'm leaning toward attempting a Bluff here. Trying to incapacitate without killing is difficult and makes the situation more complicated. The last thing we need is someone running off and alerting everyone in the palace that something strange is happening.

Not sure what to say, though. Having Esha use Aspect of Innocence might not be a bad idea. We could have her use it in conjunction with scolding them for interrupting an important magical working. Thoughts?

Trying to divine magical assassins which tried to kill Aina and are going to repeat the attempt?

If we're going to Bluff, Esha is the best one to make the attemot, IMO. Not only is her skill bonus the highest, her Aspect of Innocence power might be applicable and she can play up the mysterious mage angle, throwing out magi-babble for both added authenticity and added confusion.

[X] Try to bluff the warriors at the door
-[X] Esha will use her Aspect of Innocence power; Roland will attempt to grant her a +3 bonus to her Bluff check using Aid Another and Inge will cast Guidance on her to provide a +1 Competence bonus as well as using her Fortune Hex on Esha (If she only has time for one or the other, she uses the Hex). Esha will attempt to convince those at the door that they are interrupting a delicate magic ritual aimed at hedging out Anjo-Oru assassins and other dark forces which may still longer in the palace, and that their interference is not only unwelcome, but potentially disastrous.

@Goldfish , how do you think, could Inge help not only with Guidance but also with Fortune Hex?

I am feeling that I am slowly turn into a munchkin...

I'm somewhat curious if joke replies would work as a bluff from having an orgy of the Asterix kind to being asked to do an impromptu acting routine from your homeland that you can mime your voice to be like a demon after smoking six packs a day to having gumdrops and ice cream.

[x] Bluff
-[x] We are attempting to call upon the palace spirits to see if they know what Anjo-Oru were present here, and what they might have done.
--[x] This is a very delicate ritual that you are disrupting here.
---[x] If they ask about the noise, say that the spirits are restless/unhappy, but not beyond all reason.

Arc 13 interlude 1: In Out on the Town
Out on the Town

Tenth Day of Elnu-Hamba (Elnu Descendent), 1349 A. L. (After Landfall)

If there was one thing Antonio Giustiniani knew about war it was that it made the rich richer even as it made the poor poorer. Goods and supplies that would at other times have had many captains bidding for them would in a city at war be worth as much as a bundle of spearheads, or of you were lucky a barrel of salt meat or a bag of onions. Of course there was still the matter of getting the goods to market and not taken in by whoever the local potentate was... but these days and in this city he was the local potentate, or near enough and the Marcella the biggest and most well crewed ship in the fleet and wasn't that a thought that would turn a man's head right round, if it weren't for all the ghosts and ghouls and witches about the sound of the market new-opened among the smell of spice and smoke and sizzling meat might seem a paradise for a merchant with well garnished pockets.

Alas he thought, biting into the meat stuffed flatbread, one had to make allowances for the old wizard's fears and so he was doing all his talks in sight and hearing of half a dozen guards, men of the Fellowship all and whom he could trust to keep their mouth closed, but no man talked as freely with fourteen ears on him as with just two. So it went down among the market stalls: here tables high with fruit and nuts, there stacks of fine and not so fine woods for joinery, bows and even for ship-making, tinny hearths of bronze-smiths showing off their craft that gleamed like the scales of some fantastical fish in the evening hour when the red of the flames and the red of the sky mingled freely.

Nothing more precious by weight and volume than silver or gold of course, but that was the same thing a man might wish to keep to hand in a city on the verge of war and chaos so it was that Antonio was in the business of assuring the locals that of course the new Queen would set the city, the whole island to rights... and oh isn't this some fine pottery for you to sell on to the provincial clan heads. Why mayhap it would become a royal gift...

A pity that nimbleness of the tongue and of the limbs resided in the same place that day. He did not think anything of the old woman trying to press a salted bun into his face a little too hard, times were tough after all and no one needed money more regularly than the baker whose goods went off in days...

The pain came in a blinding instant carving into his upper arm all the way down to his elbow the sleeve of his tunic red and dripping in an instant and the old woman in and instant a dark shape hooded and cowled. The shadow that had already killed one of the lords of the Anwa had come for him.

Antonio takes 16 Damage
Antonio takes 4 Dexterity Damage

I am fucking flattered, the words flashed though the haze of pain as folk on the street started to scream and his guards scrambled to defend him from the sudden attack.

Who was guarding Antonio?

OOC: And this is one of the reasons why I insisted in having a list of who would be doing the summoning, as I could not ask 'but who are you leaving with Antonio then' without giving the game away then you guys get to choose who is here now. Since I know it will be asked, yes, Silver is eligible.

:rage::rage::rage::rage: What a dastard of a QM ...

:p

That's a great twist

Man, fuck this assassin.

Dammit, looking back it's so obvious that they would try to attack members of our party if they were alone.

Silver needs to get Antonio out of there ASAP.

Damn, I wish my mind was more twisty. This never occurred to me. Well played, @DragonParadox.

[X] Silver is serving as Antonio's mount and companion for the day, and he is being guarded by four spearmen and both net-wielders.
