004-The Interlopers
[X] See if you can't use the wards to expand the boundaries of the temple. It's a long shot, but maybe you can beat back some of that twisted, corrupted world.

This world, this land of the dead, you're slowly coming to grips with the fact that you live here now. The rotting soil, the gnarled vegetation, the mockery of all existence that it is… it will be your home forevermore.

Still, you cling to any normalcy you can find, like the pristine temple grounds. How strange, that this place resembles the world of the living while both you and Kami-sama are mangled parodies of what most would envision you to be.

Kami-sama doesn't stop you from beginning the task of expanding the wards. It doesn't approve or disapprove, your actions simply do not go against its will. As far as you're concerned, that will do.

The wards in question have physical positions, so perhaps you could move them?
Kami-sama rejects that course of action immediately. Apparently that would drop the barrier entirely.
Maybe you can make another ward farther out? You'd need to make four new ones… Kami-sama won't let you. That would take more power than it is willing to let you use.

So… if you amassed an excess of energy, Kami-sama would allow you to expand the boundaries?

Yes. It would.

Hooray! Well, hooray for a future you. Present you can't do anything.

Still, a goal for later.

You walk through the village, the ground squishing wetly beneath your sandals. It's not mud, or water, but…
It's something else. You're not going to check.
As usual, the spirits here recoil and flee from your visage. They have this whole week since you died.

Death…

You've somewhat come to terms with your death. You knew your whole life that you'd die, and you don't regret sacrificing yourself to protect your sister. It's just…
This world, you never could have anticipated it. Who could? This sickly, rotting imitation of life, it was beyond imagination, worse than the cruelest imagination.

At least there's some form of structure here. Kami-sama has you performing routine tasks. Maintaining the wards, patrolling the town, it's somewhat similar to when you were alive.

Somewhat.

A scream tears through the air from the edge of the village. That alone isn't abnormal, the spirits of the dead scream a lot. This one, however, is that of a spirit being attacked, and not just a general expression of despair and anguish.

You're a bit saddened that you can tell the difference between the two already.

In a flash, your claws are out, and you're bounding over the houses towards the outskirts.
Can you save them? Is it worth trying? In a way, dying in this world is almost a mercy.
Still, Kami-sama desires order in the village, and so you will protect those living here…

If you can call this living.

You land near the road, just a bit too late. Two twisted, blackened ghosts are skewering little Chie, who died last season from a bad fall. They stab her again and again with crooked spears, cackling as her strangled cries slowly die away. Her form shrivels and crumbles, her energy and essence sucked away by those two specters.

Horrible. Unforgiveable.
Everyone in the village belongs to Kami-sama.

You bare your claws and growl at the interlopers. No one takes from Kami-sama! They level their spears at you and bark something unintelligible. Something hostile. They clearly want to do to you what they did to poor Chie.

As if they could. Ha.

With a shriek of rage, you're on them. Life has been absolutely awful, and you've finally found something you can take it out on.

Ethereal claws spark off of oozing steel, and both spearheads are rent from their shafts. The two spirits don't falter and jam the broken wooden shafts into your body. You feel them tear skin and dig into your chest.

Such a thing can't truly hurt you. It hurts, but the pain is only from the lingering parts of you that remain human.

Kami-sama has made you so much more than that.

You grab the shafts and wrench them out of their hands, out of your chest. Blood sprays into the air, showering the corrupted soil around you. Your own twisted flesh knits back up, although your robes stay bloodied. Your tail flares up behind you as you raise your claws against the now-defenseless wraiths.

The first you split from shoulder to hip, and he wails in agony. You don't care. His pain is well-deserved.

Lashing out with your other hand, you rend the second's head from his neck. The garbled shriek is almost comical as it sails through the air and lands in the dirt. His body flails and falls over, thrashing on the ground. They have been rendered harmless, but they can still move, as evidenced by the first's twitching attempts to drag himself away.

Oh, you can't have that.

These horrid, disgusting things… you can't destroy this world, but them?
Them you can destroy.

With the crumbling remnants of the two things blowing away into the wind by your feet, you finally have time to think.

These things, whatever they were, were working together. You don't know that much about this world of the dead, but you have never seen two beings work together. Well, aside from you and Kami-sama, although you'd hesitate to call this truly working together. More like working for.

You survey the scene. They appear to have come down the road. If you keep going down it, you'll reach the plains.

These two were alone…

Right?

[] Kami-sama would like to know where they came from. Investigate.

[] You think Chie's grandmother's spirit is still in the village. She should know what happened to her.

[] Consume the crumbling remains. Perhaps you'll learn something from what remains of their spirits.

Kami-sama didn't say anything about not eating them, so that's probably fine. Still, wouldn't do to not investigate while there might be more hanging around.

Picked the more sentimental option

It's risky to leave if there are more of these guys around.

Given the spirits general reaction to us, I'm not sure whether they will want to hear it from us.
