I always love these attempts.

Gendo: "And I got activation codes and ability to shut it down. Now shut up and go cry in the corner or something"

Shinji: "I know - I just wanted to say that while she got behind you."
*Cue Misato bashing Gendo over the head*

...hrm - has anybody ever done a story where its just Gendo dying in various ways? Not very deep, but I imagine writing it at least would be AMAZINGLY cathartic.

I'm getting tempted to write Gendo's redemption into the plot now, just to see the reaction I'd get. :V

Since I see new guests likebombing things (@Diomedon, @armorfiend, @Kemayo, @Frankfawn43, @khazit) I'm hopeful of getting an update up by Friday, but I've written myself into a tricky scene that may take a bit of whacking at to get through: Now that Rei lives literally next door and spends pretty much every waking moment with Shinji and Asuka, Misato's going to notice Rei is wobbling between 'so sedate she's almost in a coma' and 'twitchy, vomiting, and on the verge of a breakdown' thanks to the drugs. She might ask some questions about that.

I've been here for some time. I just fell behind a little with things getting busy due to the holiday season and caught up on 2-3 snippets.

I'm not f-flattered or anything that you noticed my l-likes or anything.

I honestly can't see Yui Ikari as a Mama Bear.

I just can't.

The woman was cray from the very beginning. And someone who is perfectly willing to let the near extinction of humanity go through for whatever reason is someone that is not meant to be sympathetic.
Yui Ikari is more like, Mama Badger, mixed with "Shoe Throwing Mom", with a side of Crazy Cat Lady for dipping sauce.

...

Great, now I have an image of Unit 01 surrounded by cats, giving gentle ear scratches to a tiger with a single finger....

As a second-hand troll, I say dooo eeet.

Man, you work fast when motivated. Between kids, work, and this, how do you sleep?

but I've written myself into a tricky scene that may take a bit of whacking at to get through: Now that Rei lives literally next door and spends pretty much every waking moment with Shinji and Asuka, Misato's going to notice Rei is wobbling between 'so sedate she's almost in a coma' and 'twitchy, vomiting, and on the verge of a breakdown' thanks to the drugs. Just my two cents, for what little it's worth. Maybe Misato's first reaction would be 'call Rits, something's wrong'? The kids would obviously try to stop her by words or blocking her. Would Misato try and apply what battlefield medical training, if any, she has then, or just skip to 'limit patient's ability to harm self and others'? At which point you can have an off-and-on Q&A.

this must happen.

... Wait, I know Shinji and Asuka asked Misato if they can get Rei to move next to them, but when did she... Oh, right. Back during the "let's have Rei stick around Shinji and Asuka in hopes that whatever's getting their synch rates up would rub off on her" phase, right?

Immediately after Asuka saw what Rei's apartment looked like, and she and Shinji determined to help wean her off the drugs. Asuka did not like the idea that any Eva Pilot could be treated that way. She just said 'Hey, Misato, go look at her apartment and tell me if that's ok with you.' Misato took one look at Rei's apartment and pitched a small fit. Within a week Rei was living in the next apartment over to Misato.

... Well, I don't remember reading the part about Misato actually doing that visit.

A quick look on a Japanese-English dictionary site with substring search indicates that Japanese contains native words whose romaji spelling contains the substring "ria", such as eriashi "nape of neck; border of hair at back of neck" and ariawase "anything available; on hand; ready".
It's just old age, then.

Seriously though, I should stop talking about things I don't know.

Biggest problem I see with that is how Shinji and Asuka will tie her down until she can hear their telling of things.

Of course, afterwards they need to really tie her down to stop her blowing Ritsuko a new, .45 cal breathing hole.

To be honest I'd think that telling Misato would be one of the first things Shinji and Asuka would do once they've reached the point where Rei doesn't need a 24/7 double hug. They are intelligent enough to know that confronting Ritsuko directly would be dangerous and most likely not yield any good results. Misato on the other hand is trustworthy and as an adult with her place in the NERV hierarchy has more options to handle the problem than the pilots.

You assume he sleeps.

Considering how many hours after I remind him 'dude your bed is full of wife, attend to that' he stays awake doing things?

This is not the safe assumption one would think it is.
So instead of the usual plan of "you sleep when the baby sleeps", he does "You write when the baby sleeps"?

As stated one of my earlier posts (specifically Advice and Trust [NGE]), Yui's actions would be best framed as not psychotic or crazy, but as desperation.

Let's take a step back and look at the chess masters behind the whole shebang, SEELE. They as far as we know hold all the cards, or at most a great deal of the cards to Third Impact. They have the Dead Sea Scrolls, They have agents and hitmen at their beck and call who can make people disappear easily (See Yui say as much in Episode 21), They have control of all the other MAGI Computers, They have the EVA Series, They have control of the JSSDF (And most likely many other Armed Forces around the world), and they have both physical body of ADAM (Prior to Gendoh taking it for himself and surgically implanting it into his hand/eating it) and the soul of ADAM in Kaworu amongst all other things... oh and they're rich as well. So in short, they have the foresight, manpower, and pockets needed to get whatever they wanted.

Now imagine if Yui stopped the plans to Instrumentality early, as in, before Third Impact was well underway and SEELE was turned into goo. What would happen? You'd have a pissed off SEELE and a NERV that is WOEFULLY outgunned and at a severe disadvantage. Sure, they could ROFL stomp the JSSDF (or any other Armed Forces joining in as back up) using Unit-01 (which let's not forget didn't ingest a S2 organ this time around, that honor goes to Unit-03 thanks to Bardiel), but there's still the virtually invincible EVA-Series with the Lance of Longinus Copies... and SEELE has been at this since the medieval era if the Classified Information of Evangelion is to be believed. What would be the sane answer to stoping a for all intents and purposes omniscient secret organization with control over the world via the UN?

Any plan Yui would have to concoct to stop SEELE would have to essentially involve taking them all down in one shot... otherwise NERV and the world would have to deal with a pissed off SEELE for years to come.... or the world could devolve a world-wide conflict versus rival nations and their EVA's and Werewolves...lol. But I digress.

Yes, Yui might not earn Mother of the Year, but put her decisions into perspective and remember who she is dealing with. Yes, the EVA's were made to stop the Angels, but this is only to serve in furthering the end game that is Third Impact. What better way to throw a monkey wrench into that plan then being the resident soul in said plan's lynchpin? In other words, she made a hasty and desperate choice because of the threat SEELE poses to the world, because she was both short of time (again, Episode 21 all but confirms SEELE was threatening her life if she didn't follow their scenario) and because she loved her son enough to sacrifice being there for him in person so that she can protect him in the form of EVA-01 when SEELE began the process of kick-starting Third Impact.
There are a few problems with this analysis.

First of all, there is a factual error.

At the time of Yui's absorption into EVA-01, SEELE did not yet have access to the EVA series with Lance copies, because the EVA series had not been built yet. They did not have direct control over military power yet.

Secondly, Yui had a lot of other options to stop SEELE. SEELE depended on secrecy to maintain it's power. Especially since SEELE caused the 2nd Impact. Yui was perfectly in a position to reveal that fact with irrefutable proof. Since she directly participated in the triggering of the 2nd impact, (hence why Gendo got his warning to get out in time).

Even if Yui felt entering the Eva was the best trump card, it does not explain why she didn't take any other actions to reveal SEELE and otherwise make things difficult for them. She could have even time delayed it to occur after she was absorbed by the Eva.

Finally, there is a much simpler explanation for Yui's behavior. Yui was a true believer in the SEELE project, and willingly and proactively supported them. She manipulated Gendo to be her hatch man, trigger the 2nd impact and kill billions of people because she agreed with SEELE, (since she was raised inside the organization).

Then she had Shinji, and decided she wanted to ensure Shinji's importance and survival as his own being. That's why she decided to betray SEELE - and only to the extent of protecting her son. Actually stopping Instrumentality does not seem to be her or Gendo's plan. Only to prevent SEELE from obtaining control over the assimilated leviathan, and instead allowing individualism to exist at a lower level beneath the surface gestalt.

The fact that Yui took no other effort to sabotage the SEELE effort beyond interjecting herself and Shinji in to the control of instrumentality is evidence for her limited goals in betraying SEELE.

I'm sorry, but Yui is a mass murderer, and about as evil a character as you can find. Worse than Gendo. Even evil women love their children, and that humanity does not excuse Yui for all her other actions.

I can't help but find this unaccountably hilarious.
That makes two of us. That being said, I'm going to assume that Pale Wolf is implying he knows that Stryp has a exceptionally beautiful/golden-hearted wife and thus it would be an insult to not focus on her when she desires his attention instead of writing stuff for us (which I totally agree with; really, man, your wife comes first, don't neglect her).

... This is ignoring so many points of argument and strong hints/evidence from canon (much of which has already been explained in prior posts) that I cannot muster the will to bother involving myself in this debate any longer.

Stryp's wife demands HIATUS! :p

I was really pleased when I came up with that phrasing, yes.

Nah, just that she hangs out in the same channel with us and we literally see her go to sleep hours before Strypgia does.

Lils knows he's a night owl, she's pretty good-humoured about it and doesn't seem to mind.

It's just that it's like three AM and Strype has adult stuff to do in the morning and still hasn't gone to bed yet.

You're going to have to have some very strong citations in order for me to even consider this as true.
The original series?

Gendo Ikari was part of the Katsuragi expedition to the South Pole. He left the day before 2nd impact happened. Are you telling me that is coincidence?

It's obvious that SEELE would need a man on the scene to make sure the Katsuragi expedition went all the way through with the investigations that would trigger 2nd impact. Who better than a man madly in love with the daughter of one of SEELE's directors?

Yui and Gendo Ikari then obliquely reference it on the flashback when they are picking out names for their kids.

Look, my point is that sure, you could imagine all sort of wild scenarios where Yui and Gendo Ikari had no choice but to go along with the murder of 2 billion humans, but really were secretly fighting the good fight. Or you can accept the far simpler explanation: Yui Ikari was a good little daughter who did what her SEELE daddy told her to do - even if that meant telling Gendo to make sure the Katsuragi expedition stayed on track to triggering 2nd impact.

I wouldn't be surprised though if the original plan was to have Gendo die at the South Pole, and his narrow escape was due to Yui warning him despite her original instructions.

Your scenario assume that SEELE somehow was able to predict with total accuracy what Adam would do when they poked him with a stick. 2nd Impact could have resulted in 99% of humanity dying - or Adam could have said, "screw it" and gone fishing for a few millennium.

So the question is: will Strypgia portray Yui as the woman forced by desperation and foul circumstances to do what she's done, like Cae Lumis expects? Or the card-carrying genocidal Saturday-morning-cartoon supervillain Elder Haman expects? We'll have to wait and see...

My choice of phrasing should show which side of the fence I'm on.

Or something in-between? Or something unlike either? There are as many ways to interpret Yui as there are fans, some barely differing from each other, others as wildly contrasting as white and black are.

My choice of phrasing should show which side of the fence I'm on.
... I honestly can't figure it out. Nevermind, I just figured it out. Stupid me.
