Accursed Citrine - Yet another Dark Soul/Madoka Magica Crossover

Voting is open
Yeah, wording the vote'll be the fun part, I'm just giving time for anyone else who fancies throwing in their own two cents. And no worries about not know much dark souls, you've got at least two people who know a fair bit right here so toss some ideas at the wall and see what sticks.

Back to the vote, my current thinking is:
[] Ignore the butterfly, dash across the bridge.

The next real question is if picking up and carrying Oscar across the bridge would be faster than leaving him to run. We're clearly capable of it.

Also, does Kirika know IC there's stuff in the tower, or just hoping something is there?
The latter. we seem to have her working on game-logic more than a little, so assuming the boss would be guarding loot sounds like it's in the park.

So, uh... any idea how to word that vote? John Sandman Farseer Sen'Zabl I would help, but I don't even know Dark Souls really, so I don't know about layouts and stuff. Also, does Kirika know IC there's stuff in the tower, or just hoping something is there? Because that will change the wording.
Well I don't know madoka beyond having watched the first series years ago and have no exposure to any of the spin of stuff so you aren't the only one going into this kinda blind. I don't really have a single clue what the deal is with Kirika or that Oriko girl beyond the fact they're magical girls from some random madoka spinoff.

The only information we are working with here is we are trying to find a blacksmith somewhere in the darkroot garden and the butterfly doesn't seem to be something that could operate a forge so the protagonist here could probably figure out this thing isn't her objective so there is no real point in dealing with it. Even if we don't know there is stuff in the tower it is cover from getting blown to bits by the big bad butterfly and what we are looking for could be in there. If getting in there is easy or hard depends on how the QM decides to interpret fogwalls.

Fogwalls can be kind of inconsistent given they seem to be a mechanic that exist solely to keep you trapped in an area when your fighting a boss or an invader. They don't even really do that good of a job of it given you can kill a number of bosses from outside their boss arena, there is a specific boss (its really more of a scripted death event than an actual boss at that specific point) that you can just outright leave through the fogwall that normally prevents you from turning back, and even the spots where they pop up to force you to fight invader by preventing you from leaving the area there is still some cases where you can just circumvent them and get out of them anyways. I don't think I've ever even seen fogwalls mentioned directly in any of the lore to be honest so how effective they actually are here is up to the QM.

We should probably include a backup course of action in our plan in case we can't get around the fog.

There's really only one kind of fog wall that's probably even quasi-canon, and it's the giant gold ones that wall off most of the Lords' zones prior to placing the Lordvessel, beause you get the dramatic scene of them dropping when you do so.

A quick summary, since Kirika's motivations are pretty important for her actions and mindset:

Oriko Mikuni is a "fallen from grace" rich girl that Kirika fell in love with. Oriko's wish gave her precognition, which showed her Madoka's witch destroying the world and she made it her goal to kill Madoka to save the world.
Kirika Kure made a wish to keep changing to suit Oriko, which resulted in her going through major events and truama that changed her mentally (usually towards the psychotic) the more desperate Oriko became.
Kirika went from killing witches for Oriko (she couldn't control her precognition and was draining magic) to fighting a group of magical girls, to outright hunting magical girls to draw attention away from her and Oriko.
It ended with Oriko giving up when Kirika's soul gem was damaged, and doing a final hail mary by attacking Madoka at school. Kirika went witch to help Oriko, and Oriko managed to kill Madoka right before Homura shot her.
Oriko was strong willed and manipulating, but with moments of intense guilt. Kirika was awkward and odd, then gradually became more and more violent and obsessive as she was surrounded by death and her love for Oriko grew.

There were also a few other new magical girls, the most important ones for this quest (not directly, but for some side stuff) being:
Yuma Chitose, a young girl "adopted" by Kyoko with very strong healing magic. She had an overall green colouring with yellow ball hair ties.
Koito Asako, the sister of one of Kirika's victims. We don't know her magic, but she probably wished to know why Oriko did what she did (or something like that). She had a white priestess-like design with purple feathers.

Well, I have a grounding in PMMM lore and know a fair bit of darksouls 1, but only really know Noisy Citrine in broad strokes. What a fun collection of voters we are, eh?
had a white priestess-like design with purple feathers.
And I seem to recall Oswald selling some mysterious miracle named 'purple feather'. Who wants to bet that Oriko and Kirika aren't the only Magical girls to end up here? Beyond that, who wants to bet we'll meet another one?

We should probably include a backup course of action in our plan in case we can't get around the fog.
The simplest, and only real one, would be just to get back to the other side of the bridge where there's better cover and prepare to fight this battle the long way.

Kirika with timeslow could probably pull it off, even with the butterfly back to spamming magic down at her. Oscar? probably not. Maybe we need to leave him here and go ourselves in that case. Basically, we're gambling a fair bit here on something that's probably down to QM discretion about whether we can pass through the fog gate and avoid this fight or must swat the butterfly. If we can skip it? 100% worth it. Maybe it's just me, but this fight was a pain enough before the thing gained passive regeneration to complement the healing it gets from those flowers.

It's not that the fight is too hard in darksouls proper, not massively, but something that you'd still be liable to take a good amount of damage from unless you were quick to react, could fast roll, and had gotten gud at dodging. Kirika more-or-less meets these criteria, but… well, her (and by extension, our) luck with it seems pretty variable. And beyond the ember, there isn't really anything I'd consider a major reward in the base game here.

And then there's the fact it seems to be accumulating Grief, mostly as part of its passive regen. So either there's a phase-2 once we do enough damage and it gets too much of the stuff, or if we really lucky it dies and doesn't come back as a witch that's probably just as suited to this fight as the butterfly was.

I'm not saying we can't win. We probably can and I have no reason to believe our classy QM would throw something we can't beat at us without some kind of hint that we won't be winning in a fight and should beat feet. My thoughts are simply that we're not geared for this fight, so we should either try and bypass it or withdraw and come back with more firebombs and the like. Two brought it down to land, so I'd wager twenty to be enough for the job even if we missed a few times. Maybe less if we can get some good clawing in.

Well, seeing as we're about a week on from the last chapter and conversation seems to have dried up, I'm just going to throw a vote into the ring. Can't have a new chapter without votes after all:

[X] Ignore the butterfly, dash across the bridge.
-[X] Use timeslow on the butterfly and dash back if the fog gate stops us.
-[X] Remember to inform Oscar what we are doing, poor communication kills

We should probably also communicate what we are doing with oscar is some way as well, even if its just shouting it real quick.

On an unrelated note anyone else find it weird that there are moonlight butterflies in the crystal caves but only the one butterfly guarding the divine ember actually has a soul drop item?

So, maybe tell oscar to wait here then since we're likely to be faster than him?

*And yes, it is a little wierd. Maybe the one we're fighting now is the original or something?

Maybe because its out killing things and collecting more souls than the ones that are in the caves? Like maybe it takes time to develop a solid soul item after collecting X number of souls, that could potentially be why demons/dragons/gargoyles don't drop soul items in the first game but they do in future games. The reason Quelagg is the only demon to drop a soul being she is implied to hunt people for humanity to help her sister so she probably has gotten more souls than most other demons.

Also a very valid possibility, one that I could see being entirely correct.

So, are we adding something like '[] Tell oscar to wait here' to our votes or do you have another suggestion ready?

Seeing the big butterfly can heal almost as rapidly as you can, seemingly without needing to burn through magic, you can't help but grumble a bit. Every time you learn more about the magic in this world, you realise it's more and more convenient than anything you got from your Magical Girl contract.

With this in mind, your willingness to deal with this stupidly oversized bug quickly drops. You look between it and the other end of the bridge, contemplating. If this was a video game, the butterfly would be the boss guarding some treasure, and you'd need to kill it before moving on. However, the only place you can see that could hide treasure is the tower at the other end of the bridge, and you see nothing stopping you from just ignoring the butterfly and running into the tower.

You glance back at the butterfly, seeing the wounds in its wings have almost completely healed, and come to a decision. You turn to Oscar and crack him a grin. "Hey, how fast can you run?"

"Run? Well, my armour slows me down somewhat, but I can still manage somewhat. Why?"

"We're making a run for the tower." You say flatly, grabbing his arm and yanking him towards the other end of the bridge. He seems surprised, but quickly starts running along with you, if only so you don't end up dragging him after you.

Behind you, you hear the subtle flaps of the butterfly taking off again, presumably having finished its flower drinking and ready to start throwing magic at you again. You eye the bridge in front of you – still half its length to cross, and Oscar slowing you down – and decide you'd rather spend some of your magic to avoid having to dodge the butterfly's attacks.

Glancing back, you focus your time-slowing magic in a cone, making sure to avoid catching Oscar in the effect. You sense your invisible magic wrap around the butterfly and see its movements slow to a crawl as time itself slows around it. When you fought that blonde with the drills, your magic was enough to let you easily dodge her bullets, so the butterfly's comparatively slower magic bolts will be a breeze.

The giant butterfly seems to realise your destination and lets out a distressed shriek, which comes out as an awkwardly drawn-out sound in the grip of your magic, like a video being played at half speed. A blue glow slowly forms in front of the butterfly's face as it angles to face the other end of the bridge. You chuckle when you see the beam shoot out towards the tower doorway. It speeds up to a pretty threatening speed once it leaves your cone of time-slow, but its actual movement relies on the butterfly itself.

You can't help but chuckle at the butterfly's attempt to stop you. It seems to only be able to shoot the beam directly in front of itself, so its slowed turning means the beam is laughably easy to avoid. Once you slip past, the butterfly lets out another shriek, this one sounding almost frustrated. You don't bother looking back to see, because a moment later you pass through the doorway and enter the tower.

The inside looks like an almost identical copy of the tower you came up to the bridge. A wide staircase spirals up the square tower, with large stone bricks scattered about the floor and steps. You cut your magic now that you're inside, and the butterfly immediately lets out another frustrated shriek. You hear the thumping wingbeats growing louder and then-

CRASH!

You and Oscar jump back from the doorway when the butterfly suddenly rams itself into the tower. Its upper body fits inside the doorway and it waves its big horns about wildly, shrieking loudly as it does so.

You share a look with Oscar and begin hurrying up the stairs. The tower doesn't provide much room to move around, and you'd rather not have to dodge magic bolts at basically point-blank range.

The number of loose bricks increases rapidly as you climb higher, and soon you find the source. The top of the tower has seemingly collapsed, leaving it completely open to the outside and with bricks scattered all over the floor. Amid the bricks are various weapons and tools in different stages of completion, as well as an anvil and stone block table.

You and Oscar both freeze when you see what else is there, squatting in the middle of the mess. Crouched down, with its head down and hands clasped in a prayer-like manner is a husky stone figure that looks almost identical to Andre.

"What on earth…?" Oscar mutters, staring dumbfoundedly at the blacksmith's husk.

You shake yourself of your own shock and step over to the figure and crouch down to investigate. "Maybe he's Andre's long lost twin or something? Hmm? What's this?"

Grasped in the blacksmith's hands are three things: A key, some kind of bone, and a stone bowl-like block with a faintly glowing flicker within. You pry them out, snapping off a few of the figure's fingers in the process, and show them to Oscar.
"You think this was the Divine Blacksmith Andre was talking about?"

Oscar shakes his head at your question and clears his throat. "Uh, well… I'm not sure. He certainly seems to be a blacksmith, and this ember; it has a somewhat… special feel to it."

"Well, we definitely aren't getting any fancy smithing from this guy any time soon." You say, poking the very solid, very not moving blacksmith. "And why was he holding some random bone?"

Oscar takes the bone and inspects it. "This is no normal bone, it's the bone of an Undead. Specifically, it's what's referred to as a Homeward Bone."

"Uh, okay…?" You say, taking it back and eyeing it yourself. "So?"

"Bonfires are fuelled by bones, remember? These Homeward Bones have been taken from a bonfire and still hold a longing to return to the flames. You can tell from the coating of ash infused into it."

Taking a closer look, you can make out areas where the pale white is stained with faint grey patches.

As you're thinking about the implications of a bone wanting to return to a bonfire, a shriek echoes out and the tower shakes with a loud crash! The butterfly, apparently having unwedged itself from the doorway, floats up into the air next to the tower.

Well, we now have the option to write-in "Bone out like a coward," here or later.
But yeah the game itself refuses to explain what's up with the petrified Andre clones, whether here or in the Painting.

[X] We got what we came here for, bone away and leave the big bad blasting butterfly behind.
-[X] Rest at the bonfire we arrive at.

Shame the butterfly didn't stay wedged a bit longer or we could have had the perfect opportunity for a plunging attack. As it stands I don't see a point in sticking around to fight it at this point.

We could just ask Andre if the other blacksmith was a relative of his once we get back. The game doesn't like to explain anything but here we can actually ask the NPCs questions instead of sticking to a set script of dialogue.

Well that went better than I was expecting, if honest. Still, we've got what we came for and even if Kirika and Oscar don't know it there's clearly nothing else left here that's worth their time. Might as well warp out and leave the (now amusingly frustrated) butterfly behind, skipping out what looks like a tough fight in the process.

Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll get into a fight with the cat covenant nearby and die. The bridge it's fought on is the only place with the particular plants it uses to heal so it probably won't wander too far from them so I doubt it'll try to hunt us down at all.

I wouldn't bet on it dying before we meet it again. But I equally doubt it'll pursue us, if only because it likely has no clue where we are.

The last bonfire we used was (IIRC) Firelink, and I'm pretty sure the Home-bone and Homeward miracle both take you to the last used bonfire.

Wait we seriously didn't stop by the bonfire directly above Andre? That is odd. I know we had no in character way to know about the bonfire hidden by the illusory wall next to the door you need the crest of artorias for but how the fuck did we miss one as obvious as Andre's Bonfire?

If I had to guess, nobody thought to vote for it. A bit of a mistake in hindsight and Oscar seems to be at about half health right now so we should probably rest and recover briefly once we arrive. Maybe we should add that to the current plan of 'homeward bone'?

But yeah, the last mention of a bonfire and resting I can find is all the way back at Firelink.

Well we unlocked the elevator to firelink so its not much of a trek to get back, so it shouldn't be a problem. Can we ask to just automatically rest for a moment at any bonfire we find from now on? It restocks estus, heals us, and repairs our equipment so there isn't really ever a reason not to do so. The only exceptions I can think of is the jail cell seath puts you in that can't warp and the painted world bonfire that also don't let you warp away.
