Welcome to Oz
Location
United States
You stand on the wooden deck of the flying ship Quelala, facing directly the opposing winds. They lash out at you with rain, great gouts of it drumming the planks about you. The canvas of the ship's sails flap harder to keep in place. Your ship can draw no nearer. You stand firm against it, green rimmed goggles shielding your open eyes. Your hands tighten in your mismatched gloves of white and purple. You see the large castle she carved from ten thunder clouds lashed together, a maelstrom of menace in appearance and in fact. This is where the Wicked Witch of the East has made her stronghold.

You are Gayelette, Good Witch of the North, on a mission for the Emerald City. You are to hunt down and destroy the Wicked Witch.

What do you do?

[] Check your magical gear and prepared spells
[] Talk to your crew (Write-in questions you might want answered via expository dialogue)
[] Fly right into the fray like only a Good Witch can
[] Write-in any other ideas

[X] Check your magical gear and prepared spells

It wouldn't do to rush in blindly. Best take an inventory of your supplies so you can pace yourself and come up with cunning plans.

Eureka
Upon your shoulder appears your MENU familiar, a glass cat with pink brains glistening within its head, named Eureka. Purring, it tells you what you possess.

"You have equipped your Light Fantastic Boots, which afford you flight, your Oilskin Duster, which affords you protection against inclement weather, your Witch's Gloves, which have loaded into them your spells, and your Witch's Hat, which is enchanted to stay upon your head as a badge of your office. Would you like me to list your room's inventory, Madam Gayelette?"

It has been a while since you last saw your familiar. It appears that the Audience has discovered you. You smirk. "List my spells, if you would."

Eureka grins like only a smug cat can grin, rain splashing upon its transparent coat. "You have three spells per glove. In your right are Summon Seeds, Accelerate Growth, and Summon Giant Boulder. In your left are Heal Wounds, Give Blessed Protection, and Repair Machine." You turn around with a flourish, and step down the stairs from the observation deck to visit your crew. It is good to walk among them and lift their spirits.

As you trek down the hall, you see a purple man covered in rough stitching, tugging at the ropes with mumbled curses and strong arms. He nods at you with due deference, and you return the gesture.

"At ease. Is the work too hard for you, Rango?" He searches your eyes, to see if this is a test. You have neglected to visit the men during the week's journey, but you know all their names readily. Memorization is a skill necessary for any Witch.

"No, ma'am, it ain't hard, but I do wonder why we're up here in Euros's territory by our ship's lonesome. Begging your pardon, but could ya clue me in?"

"Well, seeing as the mission is about to reach its climax, I suppose I can. We are here to end her reign of terror by destruction."

Rango's mismatched eyes widen. "What did she do to deserve all that?"

"You mean aside from the enslavement of a good third of the Munchkin population, the magical distortion of the entire east side of the continent's weather, and betrayal of the principles of Science?" He nods dumbly. "She refuses to acknowledge the Wizard's rule. So he sent me."

"Oh dear. That was quite the mistake she made."

You smile thinly. "Indeed."

[X] Acquire bucketful of water for absolutely no reason at all, you're sure. Can't think of what use you could possibly have for water against the Wicked Witch, nope.

Water worked on the west witch so unless she's exactly the same we'll need something different like fire.

Ah, yes, our character is a fourth-waller. Tricky to pull off, but fantastic when it works. I shall hope.

[X] Muse about the nature of the Audience
- [X] When did you hear about the Audience?
- [X] When did you first encounter the Audience, if it's different from above? Is this your first time?
- [X] Is the Audience something that you can trust and rely on, in general?
- [X] Is the Audience an indistinct collective, or can you track individual voices in it?
- [X] Can the Audience show you pictures?
- [X] Does anyone else know of the Audience? Can you tell other people about the Audience without them thinking you're insane?
- [X] Why do you have a familiar that can sense the presence of the Audience? Where did you get it? Did it come with this ability?
- [jk] Do you know anyone named "Osiris Elvis Maxwell Ozymandias Bulkhead T. Gale, god king musician of the lumberjack dead, judge and ruler over ye despairing mighty"?

Spell Shuffle
You nod curtly to the crewman. "Back to work." Then you walk off down the hallway. You feel the subtle tug of the Audience, and head to your room.

Eureka breaks the silence. "They're curious. I believe this is the start of the tale."

You look over at the familiar. "The start? But surely..."

"No, I am certain now. This is where things BEGIN." You grumble. Through all your years of training, you have only heard of the Audience, but never attracted its notice. Was it not interesting, those years? Did they not see fit to witness your childhood, to offer advice or inspiration? "Don't pout. This simply proves what the Wizard has already said. This battle is important."

"Yes, but it also shows that this battle is chancy. Great tragedies as well as great triumphs are witnessed by the Audience."

The cat purrs. "I wouldn't have it any other way, my dear Gayelette." You look away from it, disconcerted. You received the familiar upon your graduation from Laputa, a sign of maturity in the magic arts. Most students only experience a familiar as a MENU, a device to allow easy shifts in possessions and powers, in escalation of ability and relationships. But you knew that one day, the MENU would leave your easy grip, and become the interface for the Audience. Your careful plans are about to go awry.

You sigh, and take the doorknob in your hand, opening it. Your small mattress is nestled into the wooden structure, and a squat dresser sits across from it, without a mirror. You enter, and pull open a drawer, revealing your magical makeup kit. You close it, and look through another drawer, which contains your two spellbooks, EARTH and GOOD. You then open the third drawer, revealing a single necklace with a two humped horseshoe and a ring with a purple jewel set within it. "Have at it, Eureka."

Love Magnet
Eureka bats at the necklace. "You brought along the Love Magnet then, hm?" You regret deeply the glassblower's decision to give the cat facial expressions, as it gives the biggest leer. "You know this is worthless against Witches, yes? None of you have a heart."

"Literally, or metaphorically?"

"Why, both, of course." It then sniffs at the ring, or makes the appearance of such. "This is peculiar."

You can't help but agree. That ring was not among your luggage when you boarded the Quelala. "A gift from the Wizard? It feels magic." You pick it up and feel the hum of magic encased in close quarters.

The glass cat sighs. "Of course. The Wizard would never be remiss in doling out some deus ex machina."

You nod, then with a flourish, you remove your bun's pin with a swift gesture, and your long hair spills out resplendently. You pause a moment to let the Audience witness this. Then, sheepishly, you use the ring to do your hair up again. "Better safe than sorry. A jewel like that would be as good as a bulls eye to Euros."

The cat nods. "What about your spell books? Do you wish to exchange any of your loaded spells for them?"

[X] Swap Summon Seeds for (EARTH) Petrify Touch: On touch, convert an item or person into a statue of stone. The spell wears off by itself, over a period of time inversely proportional to the size of the item converted.
[X] Swap Repair Machine for (GOOD) Animate: On touch, brings a small inanimate item to life with enough rudimentary friendly intelligence to obey your commands.

Are these in the portfolios for Earth and Good? I'm mostly not sure what Summon Seeds would do. Actually, if we get rid of Summon Seeds, we could get rid of Accelerate Growth too, since the two seem designed for synergy.

Shipping Is Optional
You place the Love Magnet in your pocket, sheepishly looking to the side. Eureka's eyes twinkle with merriment...the worst kind of twinkle. "You know perfectly well that I don't use Love Magnets for such prurient affairs as...as..."

"Kissing? Hugging? Storm summoning?"

Your cheeks burn red. "How dare you sully the Wizard's English with such talk!" You tug open the drawer for your spell books in the meantime, and place your gloves upon their respective times, purple to EARTH, and white to GOOD.

"I don't have the time to spend on pussyfooting around, my dear, despite, ahem, appearances." Its pink brains almost throbbed with satisfaction at the pun. "I do wonder why you pocketed the device, though. All Witches remove their hearts and lock them away, after all."

You return the spells of Summon Seeds and Repair Machines, to obtain the more offensive Petrify Touch, which transforms beings and things to stone (like that dastard the Nome King, or HER), and Animate, a highly restricted spell that normally is used as a component in Powder of Life production. "The Love Magnet performs a single function: it allows two hearts to completely understand each other for a brief moment. That sort of thing can be quite useful for obtaining allies in enemy territory." Regardless of your good sense, the glass cat looks on skeptically. "...besides, the Audience thinks it will come in handy later." You pause to look upon the books again. Was that everything you wanted to do with your loaded spells?

[]No, continue to swap and get creative (write-in more spells within reason, or questions about them)

Meet the Captain
You touch the spell book of EARTH once more, and exchange your growth spell for Entangling Vines, one useful for summoning the rapidly growing-and dying wudzup vine.

Your glass cat breaks the silence. "That's enough dallying with spells, Gayelette. You should visit the captain one last time before you fly off to your fate."

You arch an eyebrow. "The Audience has strange taste." It only smirks at your comment, and vanishes behind your dresser. You thought nothing much of that. Eureka would return when you need it.

You leave your room for the constricted corridors of the Quelala. The person you seek is in the Heating Room, which provides some manner of gas for the lift-bladders. Even though you disagree with the captain on many matters, you never would accuse her of not getting her hands dirty. The smell of brimstone grows oppressive as you approach, and the crunch of shovel against thunder-coal grows loud enough to rumble like the lightning that spawned the substance.

With an impatient cantrip, you open the door, framing Captain Nikki of the Quelala herself with wood as well as the flames that make a winged silhouette of her. When the flames die down, her form becomes more obvious: she is a large winged monkey with patches of fur burnt off all over her body, and a single eyepatch over her left eye. She is the only one you've ever known to encounter the Wicked Witch of the West and escape alive and free.

Nikki cackles hoarsely. "Come to take a look at my lovely form to spur you on for the coming battle, Gayelette?"

[] Tell her off for her severe disrespect for your station
[] Ask her how she got those scars

[XD] *FLIRT

Can we bring anybody else into the battle with us? Maybe by having them ride piggyback on you as you fly or something? Maybe we could get another gun arm for this fight!

...Are there guns on this ship?

[X] Can we regenerate her scars with a spell from the repertoire of (GOOD)?

[X] Talk about the plan. What happens if you don't come back? How long do they wait here for you?

Heated Discussion
Biting your tongue, you take up a shovel. "No, I came to help you fuel the ship. Staying stationary in this weather is quite difficult for any vessel."

The simian grins. "Not for the Quelala, but any help is appreciated." Captain Nikki is almost always grinning in the most infuriating of ways, but she is the best, and she volunteered. You breath in, then out, shoveling coal alongside her. "How long did you say you wanted us to stay up here, in the skies alongside the witch's castle?"

"No more than twenty four hours. You'll know when I have completed my task: her work will dissolve."

Nikki giggles cheekily. "You'll need me to swoop to your rescue then, aye? It'll be quite amusing, putting you in MY debt." You grit your teeth. The two of you had been roommates at Laputa back in the day, on different courses. She had played many pranks on you during that time, and it made you wish to tear your hair out. You notice her scars again, and sigh, putting the past aside.

The air is dusty in the Heating Room, hot and dry, tasting of ozone. You swallow, then ask her, "Why haven't you asked me to heal you?" She stays silent. "I know it can be expensive, but I am a Cardinal Witch, and I can do as I please at my own discretion when it comes to such matters." She continues to shovel, facing away from you. "...Nikki, talk to me."

"I don't want to forget. If I let the memory fade, even a little, I might be tempted to forgive her. I never. Ever. Will." You reach out to pat her shoulder, then think better of it and get back to work. She softens. "I don't blame Witches for this, just like I don't blame this furnace for the fire that she threw at me." Both of you purposely do not mention the family she had taken, to slavery and death. Both of you know it too well. "...take me with you, please."

You stiffen. "The Wizard insisted I perform the mission alone. Armies have failed to penetrate her defenses before."

She glares at you. "So your carte blanch don't extend this far, hm? So you AIN'T bringing your Love Magnet to gather a party within her palace, HM?" You stare with some fear. "I remember it from Laputa, Gayelette. And my scars tingle around magical things like that. Don't lie to me."

"Yes, I do have the Love Magnet."

"So let me come with you! My crew can maintain the ship just fine without me riding their behinds! And besides, I do have a brace of fine pistols to bring to bear!"
