Part MMMDCLXXIV: False Fiends and True Terrors
False Fiends and True Terrors

Eleventh Day of the Third Month 294 AC

You can already hear raised voices coming from the corridor behind you and the sounds of iron-booted feet as you envelop the daemon's amber trap in your cloak. You need a distraction... Fortunately it proves easy enough to conjure. Zherys and Malarys begin to chant till false devils fill the night to cover your trail, terrors of pale bone commanding fearsome warriors before which even the spawn of the Pit quails, only nightmares of the hour born, but nightmares that can fight and bleed, that can kill at need, though you hope it will not be necessary today.

Even as these fiends fly to meet the guards Dany orders her own conjuring to dig through the rubble looking for the host. "Got him! The sarcophagus held so he should be fine to carry off."

"The spell does not leave him dreaming, I hope?" Zherys asks as you conjure a handful of ethereal scouts to enter the chambers you had not dared breach before the daemon was dealt with. Fortunately they are clever enough to know when to claim documents and arcane paraphernalia.

"No, he should be frozen," your sister replies. "Why?"

"The realization of what he has done might damage his mind if he is forced to dwell upon it in dreams." There is something in his voice you cannot quite place, not firsthand experience precisely, even the saturnine Archon of Volantis would not speak lightly of such things if he had been in such a place. Perhaps something he had witnessed in his youth.

***

Alas, securing the mansion does not go as well as the initial capture had. The guards prove to be wights just as you had suspected, though most of them do not seem to have the wit to do more than fight your supposed invading devils, who manage to herd most of the remaining mortal servants and lingering guests back into the great hall, likely saving their lives in the process. It is not the dead who prove the worst of your lingering foes.

In what must have once been a cellar for keeping food through the winter, not so different from what one might find in the North, there now lies a bone altar radiating a dreadfully familiar cold and with that cold came hunger such that even your conjured spirits who neither need nor desire sustenance were almost snared.

This hunger too you know the name of... wendingo. Though the wretches found lurking below were to the horror Amrelath faced Beyond the Wall like sparks to a raging inferno they were no mere beasts enthralled to Winter's power. They must have known their master had fallen from the moment it happened, perhaps through the sudden stillness of some arcane bond.

Rather than fight like cornered rats or flee as the daemon had done once before, the cursed Ibbenese had started tearing at the books and parchments in the room, some were even eating them. Though between the five of you it does not take long to deal with what remains of the foe in the midst of their frenzy you cannot help but curse at the sight of what they were able to destroy.

Delicate arcane apparatuses forged of ice that flowed like glass shattered and melting along with blue flames eating away at rings of silver and gold poured into the floor. At least you should be able to read through all the daemon's business dealings, the accursed had ignored that shelf entirely. All slip into the depths of your cloak.

  • Trading Ledgers of House Horj
  • Damaged Arcane Texts and other Documents
  • Broken Necromantic Apparatuses

"It looks like someone heard the fighting," Dany calls just as you finish clearing out the room. "A patrol is coming from the front gate of the manse. It's fortified so my devils should be able to hold them off a good long while, but I'm not sure..."

You shake your head. "Let them be seen, take a few ineffective shots and then retreat. We have everything we can get out of this place short of occupying it for a day and doing a full investigative sweep, and I don't think the governor of New Ibbish will be that accommodating."

What next?

[] Investigate the Fallen Daemon's dealings further
-[] By binding it into the form of a book and trying to read it
-[] By interrogating the other prisoners
-[] By going through the documents
-[] Write in

[] Carry on with other business for the month
-[] Write in

OOC: Not quite a prefect casing, but pretty good rolls on this part.

Coming from another direction, do you think the results of winging it where so far acceptable?
Sarnor as example, the losses in battle where maybe a bit low for the given foe and the lack of personal experience for most legionaires, but generally the battles were a good read and the results not too far out bounds for me.

Does anyone think that the previous method did not work and therefore needs to be rebuild from ground up?
I'm not fond of how regular combat goes most of the time and army combat is magnitudes worse. It's largely incomprehensible to me what is actually happening and the narrative focuses too much "Gotcha!"-moments and specific actors, while ignoring a lot of others. For example, our undead contingents are nearly always glossed over entirely, and on the other end of the spectrum the narrative still pretends that minotaurs are part of the Legion, even if they never were in any org chart. At the same time, they are lacking in gravity or stakes.

The result is battles that I genuinely do not care about and which I do not feel add anything to the thread by having them for days on end and who often end up a confusing mess in which it's hard to figure out what is even going on and what a given vote is even about.

...

I'm not here for the fights. That much is certain.

OOC: Not quite a prefect casing, but pretty good rolls on this part. Not yet edited.
Here's an edited version of the chapter, @DragonParadox.

Noooo, the loot, they ate the loot!:mad:

Do we even have time to do anything with the Ibbenese? Or just go back to our business and let them stew a bit in fear of devil incursions while our diplos and traders extol how safe our realm is.

Edit: I almost want to put the Daemon on a shelf to avoid any Ibben distractions right now. Then again it probably has time sensitive information and we would forget about it if we shelved it.

Even if we get information that we should be involved in Ibben I hope we can put one of the B parties on it.

[X] Investigate the Fallen Daemon's dealings further
[X] By binding it into the form of a book and trying to read it. Take every precaution to fortify your mind before reading.
[X] If anything time sensitive regarding Ibben is found assign Inquisition assets and/or free B party members to deal with it.
[X] After interrogation carry on with other business for the month

-[X] Interrogation Questions
--[X] What direct masters does the Olrethodaemon serve if any? If there is a master, what is their identity, where are they based, how does the daemon report to them?
--[X] What operations were in progress before it was captured?
--[X] Any assets it has, like other bases, hidden caches of supplies, etc.

--[X] All the True Names it has possession of
--[X] Anything else that might be conceivably of interest to us

Not sure if this is even kosher, but saw no other vote going on, I don't want to get stuck in Ibben.

I thought we were gonna book him. Is that not the case? Also @Azel can Qyburn use this template for his studies?
I still want him booked and the relevant pages on necromancy knowledge torn out.
I think DP hinted at the book being a little more of a problem then our previous Daemon book due to the taint being much stronger with such a strong Daemon.
It's just a challenge. We have plenty of people in our service capable of reading it.

If we are booking him do we need the interrogation? Or should I just add one line of at the end to book him and doublecheck the information?

The interrogation questions just transfer into what we look for in the book. It's all the same intel we want.

Do I need to add it to the vote or will DP assume we are booking him to look for those questons?

In general, bookified monsters and people go straight to Lya's private library. You need the highest of clearances to even look at one of those tomes.

As it is general practice to do so I assume I don't need to add anything on storage. Unless someone wants some extra precautions.

Probably best to specify bookifying him. Once we look through him, we can tear out the relevant pages for necromancy knowledge and what have you, and then toss the main book to Yss for the upcoming sacrifices.

Added this line:

I am a little paranoid of the trying to read it, so better safe then sorry although Viserys mind is about as safe as can be.

Not sure if adding what happens to the book would be something I should add here or not, do we want to keep it, tear out pages and feed to Yss etc, might be better for after we find out what info it has.
