Thanks, dude. That's a lot more manageable if DP is cool with it.

Is Chapter-Master Sandor gonna be "totes OP" after we Praetorize and gear him out?

  • [X] Rhaenys may be very young, but everyone in the Deep has a Blessing of Insight which means she should actually be able to make surprising mental connections so long as you lead her along the correct path rather than treat her as if she won't understand.
-[X] "To answer your questions in the order you asked them, niece, I am going to Westeros in secret to do work in the light of day. If people catch Viserys Targaryen running around the realm playing japes on his enemies, the Crown will be taken less seriously, which on the whole usually isn't a good thing, because the Crown represents so much all at once. It has to do the work of many people, and so when I need to play a trick out in the open, even I have to act as someone else, as an Inquisitor often might. Because the Inquisitor is also representing--acting in place of--the Crown, in his own way, so he or she too, when acting with their own face, must be taken just as seriously."
-[X] Solemnly: "Inquisitors and Kings have that much in common. We can't make mistakes."
-[X] Then smile: "But Buttercup the bard can."
--[X] Next: "As to Dorne, you should always treat words given in oath and pledge in the spirit in which they were exchanged. So act as though they are afforded the due protection and consideration as you would one who raises your banners in truth, because you will expect them to act in your interest even while dissembling--faking--their allegiance, their loyalty, to others."
--[X] "That is to say, when they pretend to be loyal to your enemy, they will not take liberties--actions--which prove troublesome for you to later deal with."
---[X] Considering why she asked further: "A lie isn't inherently wrong, but the context and reasoning behind that lie should always be taken into account before you speak an untruth. Often speaking truth from a certain point of view is always better, as it keeps you from falling into bad habits, like getting chocolate all over your clothes!" Share a laugh.
----[X] "Always consider who you are speaking to. I would not lie to Lord Brune or Lord Velaryon, even if I had to share uncomfortable truths with either man, because I respect them too much. But I might omit--avoid speaking--certain truths to protect both of them, and I would share my reasoning with them if asked. This is because we trust one another."
----[X] "On the other hand, one who I bore no enmity with, but did not trust, I would simply avoid placing in the position to ever learn what I do not wish to speak, and an avowed foe I would not hesitate to lie to in the least, though I might refrain from it as I spoke earlier, to avoid being placed in a precarious--a dangerous--position in the future."
[X] Go fix the fire damage in the Stormlands done to that town using a Lyre of Building and magic granted muse. Whether the fire be supernatural or not, a song that smears Tywin Lannister in the doing which results in it being fixed... you don't think people will ever have any one consistent story regarding the feats of Buttercup, which is fine, seeing as how you admittedly are mostly doing this to amuse yourself.

@DragonParadox, will Sandor cross the threashold from Medium to Large due to his Praetori conversion and will he get the benefits of the size increase?

Yes to both.

Interlude CMXXI: Daughter of Sand and Flame
Daughter of Sand and Flame

Fifth Day of the Third Month

Rhaenys Targaryen, once princess of the Seven Kingdoms, knew in a vague sort of way that she was not like other girls. It was way the shadows played in the evenings when the wind blew from the east, the way she could see magic edged balefire her mother did not see, the whisper of dreams at the back of her mind promising answers great and small. But she trusted her aunt Dany that those answers could wait for a bit while she grew bigger, mommy and uncle Oberyn, her Lord Grandmother Rhaella, and uncle Viserys could handle all the messy grown up stuff, but sometimes she was curious to see just a peek behind the curtain.

They would be writing whole books about this moment she was pretty sure. And then what would she say when her own daughters asked about it? Sorry, mommy was still playing with dollies then and doesn't know anything? Rhaenys didn't want to say that, didn't want her still vague grown-up sort of self to look silly, so she asked just a few questions. Alright, maybe a bit more than a few, mommy had that little uneven smile that was proud and a little worried, but uncle Viserys was taking her seriously, so there.

"To answer your questions in the order you asked them, niece, I am going to Westeros in secret to do work in the light of day.

"So kings can't afford to be silly?" Rhaenys asked, a little horrified. She was suddenly glad that her father had never been king so she wouldn't have to be queen. She felt a little guilty about it, since she knew Grandmother Rhaella missed her son, but it's not like Rhaenys was going to tell her, so it was alright.

"Inquisitors and kings have that much in common. We can't make mistakes," her uncle agreed solemnly. Then with a smile that came up like the sun behind clouds, he added, "But Buttercup the bard can."

"That is a silly name," Rhaenys proclaimed with certainty. Turning to her grandmother, she asked, "Don't you think that is a silly name?"

"A bit," a smile twitched at the corner of her mouth. "I rather imagine that is the point."

"As to Dorne," her silver haired uncle continued, "you should always treat words given in oath and pledge in the spirit in which they were exchanged. So act as though they are afforded the due protection and consideration as you would one who raises your banners in truth, because you will expect them to act in your interest even while dissembling--faking--their allegiance, their loyalty, to others."

"What's so special about their oaths?" the girl asked, confused. "It's not like they are fey or spirits bound to their word. Us mortals have the power to change our minds much quicker, don't we?"

Mother laughed, "She has you there, your Grace." To Rhaenys she added. "We Martells are special because we have always been more scrupulous about treating a word in the spirit rather than the letter it was meant, and less shy to show it. If you learn more history you'll find out how too."

Urgh... history. Learning from books was a lot slower than learning from dreams. Still, Rhaenys nodded like she was expected to. This wasn't the place to get into the unfairness of books.

"A lie isn't inherently wrong, but the context and reasoning behind that lie should always be taken into account before you speak an untruth. Often, speaking truth from a certain point of view is always better, as it keeps you from falling into bad habits, like getting chocolate all over your clothes!" Her uncle continued with a laugh that went around the room.

"So it's good to act like a fey... no, not good, useful," the little princess smiles slyly.

"Now you've done it," her mommy sighed dramatically, but she didn't really mean it. Mommy went quiet when she was angry, not showy like she was pretending to be uncle Oberyn. "She'll be telling not-really-lies for practice next."

Real uncle Oberyn was laughing.

"Always consider who you are speaking to," uncle Viserys hastened to add, though there was a gleam of laughter in his eye too. "I would not lie to Lord Brune or Lord Velaryon, even if I had to share uncomfortable truths with either man, because I respect them too much. But I might omit--avoid speaking--certain truths to protect both of them, and I would share my reasoning with them if asked. This is because we trust one another."

"What about if you didn't trust or distrust someone, like children at court I don't really know?" Rhaenys asked. She had been meaning to ask mommy about it, but she had a feeling she would fall on the side of making more friends since she really wanted Rhaenys to do that.

"For someone in the middle, I would simply avoid placing them in the position to ever learn what I do not wish to speak, and an avowed foe I would not hesitate to lie to in the least, though I might refrain from it as I spoke earlier, to avoid being placed in a precarious--a dangerous--position in the future." After a moment, he added, "You shouldn't really let people just hang in the middle like that. They could be your future friends..."

"Or enemies," she finished, feeling herself go cold. She knew about enemies, even if she didn't like to remember.

"Remember, we are all here to protect you from enemies, you don't have to worry about them yet," her uncle said putting a hand on her shoulder and squeezing lightly. She was glad her uncle always knew what the right amount of touching was right. She might have done something silly like freeze up if he tried to hug her, but this was nice.

OOC: The reason Rhaegar is 'father' and Elia is 'mommy' is that Rhaegar was always a distant figure in her life whereas Elia was always there. Buttercup coming up right after this. I think we'll have three updates today.

Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP.

This was great. And adorable. 😀

No lie, I would totally add buttercup to every one of my games if I could rhyme worth a damn. God i love being less serious than viseryis, he so straighlaced.

Part MMMDCLXV: Of Smoke and Rain
Of Smoke and Rain

Fifth Day of the Third Month

Though it yet four hours to sundown it might as well be evening in Raintown. As you approach the gate to the faint clop of borrowed horses it lies under clouds heavy enough to justify he name twice over, rivulets of water spilling out over weathered stone, though the bulk of it seems content to hang above it like a curtain of lead threatening to drop. The smell of charred wood hits you before you even reach the gate and the scowls of the gate guards are not much more welcoming to your rather colorful cavalcade.

Between your own bright yellow doublet and Xor's hat pinned with the azure tail feather of a Summer island bird and Dany choosing to glamor her air the same shade as Melisandre the three of you admitedly look like you had fallen off the stage in some lighthearted festival play and Raintown is alas in no state to host festivals, but the glint of silver still draws the eye and you are waved though with only a few suspicious looks.

"So what's the plan, just head into the middle of town and start playing?" Dany asks, her words a soft hiss of draconic. "I think the locals might find it a little startling when the burned timbers start righting themselves and scattered stone gathering in flocks. They are already jumpy about strange wizards and strange wizards singing mocking songs about Tywin Lannister... well it won't be hard to guess where we're coming from."

"It's not supposed to be," you point out. "The blow against the Lannister propaganda will land all the heavier if it is overt and it's not as though lord Wylde will object with his daughter in the Scholarum, even if she is officially dead."

"It's not them calling for Buttercup's head I'm concerned about, you've threaded tighter needles" your sister giggles. "But you are going to have to explain where you got the magic harp from and why you're doing this or someone might take it into their heads to start and invasion."

"In the Stormlands? This is hardly Crakclaw Point" you counter dubiously as you ride into the half deserted market square already considering the charred ruins and walls half rebuilt. Maybe you can do a bit about widening the roads white you are here... A few days will not turn this place into Sorcerer's Deep, but you can at least give them roads they can drive three donkeys abreast.

"There were bandits not twenty legues from hre in the woods claiming to be loyalists," your sister counters. "Granted they were mostly in it for the plunder but if you start working miracles in the name of 'The Dragon Over the Water' I wouldn't be chocked if someone took into his head to spark a rebelion or at least a riot."

"There is a lot of anger hanging in the air here," Xor agrees sadly.

How do you start your reconstruction efforts?

[] As a mysterious bard from the east who would like a drink at the local inn, alas it has burned down so he lends a hand to fix it

[] A friendly fellow who calls the rod his home pays a visit to the septon who calmed the crowds as they had been about to attack a Silver Serpent ship and asks where he might start fixing the town by magic

OOC: A bit short, but I thought I would give you guys the chance to shape the entrance here. Not yet edited.

[X] On your marvelous and exiting travels, you heard the story of this village and wanted to hear it for yourself top write a song about. The obvious first place to hear it from would be the septon, so you will approach him. In return for their kindness in indulging your curiosity and offering you room and board, you will use that magic lute you just so happened to have :turian: found :turian: recently.
-[X] If somebody asks where exactly you :turian: found :turian: that lute, explain that it was among the belongings of a few people from the Golden Shields who have gone into the business of robbing the peasantry and traders, accusing them of being Dragon loyalists and using that as an excuse to abuse them and steal every bit of coin or magic they carry. Worse yet, you have heard they planned to do even worse things and to blame them on the Dragon to make their deeds have the veneer of righteousness.

Of Smoke and Rain

Fifth Day of the Third Month

Although it is yet four hours to sundown, it might as well be evening in Raintown. As you approach the gate to the faint clop of borrowed horses, it lies under clouds heavy enough to justify the name twice over, rivulets of water spilling out over weathered stone, though the bulk of it seems content to hang above it like a curtain of lead threatening to drop. The smell of charred wood hits you before you even reach the gate and the scowls of the gate guards are not much more welcoming to your rather colorful cavalcade.

Between your own bright yellow doublet, Xor's hat pinned with the azure tail feather of a Summer island bird, and Dany choosing to glamor her hair the same shade as Melisandre's, the three of you admittedly look like you had fallen off the stage in some lighthearted festival play. Alas, Raintown is in no state to host festivals, but the glint of silver still draws the eye and you are waved through with only a few suspicious looks.

"So what's the plan, just head into the middle of town and start playing?" Dany asks, her words a soft hiss of draconic. "I think the locals might find it a little startling when the burned timbers start righting themselves and scattered stone gathering in flocks. They are already jumpy about strange wizards, and strange wizards singing mocking songs about Tywin Lannister... well, it won't be hard to guess where we're coming from."

"It's not supposed to be," you point out. "The blow against the Lannister propaganda will land all the heavier if it is overt, and it's not as though lord Wylde will object with his daughter in the Scholarum, even if she is officially dead."

"It's not them calling for Buttercup's head I'm concerned about. You've threaded tighter needles" your sister giggles. "But you are going to have to explain where you got the magic harp from and why you're doing this or someone might take it into their heads to start an invasion."

"In the Stormlands? This is hardly Crakclaw Point," you counter dubiously as you ride into the half-deserted market square, already considering the charred ruins and walls half-rebuilt. Maybe you can do a bit about widening the roads while you are here... Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP. You're on a roll today, dude.

[X] Azel

You know, it just dawned on me but, this isn't necessary or important at all. This is basically a hobby. Viserys hobby is to disguise himself as bard named Buttercup, travel to lands outside his Empire and conduct a one-man smear campaign against his political enemies. When did this become a thing? Who thought of this first in-thread? Because this is amazing.
