It didn't get "will never stop being Catholic" so it's possible, though I'd honestly rather not. We may have just lucked into avoiding war with Charles by virtue of glow anger rolls and decent change his mind rolls. I'd rather not go provoking conflict.

If we end up in a pissing contest with France and dragged into war with the Catholic princes of Holy Rome that leaves us ripe for conquest by Suleiman.

Religious schism in this age only leads to divisive war and unrest that allows the ottoman conquests opportunities. Odds are there isn't even a unified idea of protestantism right now, just a general uprising of resentment towards the corruption of the catholic church.

So in short, we either stay out of this and wait for Suleiman to give them a common enemy, or step in and try to force piece through light reform of the catholic church.

No point. The french are going to set their king as the new pope of protestantism, and probably paris as the new holy city, and they hate us. No one wants a headless, powerless church, they just want a different one more in favor of there beliefs and cultural heritage.

Your both kind of missing the fact that the way things are playing out isn't in favor of an abolishment of church authority, but instead the raising up of a new church authority. Even historical protestantism only took off as a result of Henry the 8th giving it support as part of his efforts to establish an absolutist monarchy in Britain.

Be careful not to misconstrue the nature of this event. This is a massive disaster to mitigate the damage caused by, not an opportunity, and I say that as someone with a deep distrust of religious authority. This is simply the wrong century/decade for this level of wide spread religious division.

Yes. Radical protestant. Probably going to declare themselves the center of the new faith and become a theocratic state and would be divinely ordained empire. Definitely going to either take advantage of the chaos to invade Germanic lands or strike a political victory by invading us to burn down rome.

I think a combination profiteer farming and mismanagement of trade. Essentially because of the securing of the mediterranean, they got overconfident and developed there land to grow cash crops instead of food, and when a storm or some other issue prevented the fleets from returning with food in a timely manner, they likely refused to spend further money on buying from other cities, inciting the citizens to riot.

This is my head canon at least. It makes a certain sense.

Is this Eastern Europe? I'm assuming that this is the reason I'm not seeing Eastern Europe, like Czechia and Poland, in the mix, beyond the rest of them being primarily Orthodox.

By the way, I'm assuming the Orthodox are staring at this and are, essentially, gaffauing that Western Europe fell for the same shit twice.

They did it once already, when Charlemagne made the Patriarch of Rome (kinda-sorta) bend the knee and made him the Pope to be crowned the Emperor of Fallen Rome [fuck the Roman Empire in the East, he said] and then went and did the same bullshit that made the Roman Empire splinter [faster], to the point his German descendents fucked off with the title of HRE...even though that was a French invention.

So it would not surprise me, but for one thing...if Spain gets on our good side, we shall unify the continent like the ancestors of old.
