A Quiet Place

Location
Cardassia Prime

Shocked there hasn't been a thread about this yet on SV. Having seen it last weekend, it's definately a unique cinematic expierence to have everyone be as dead-quiet as the characters with nobody even daring to munch popcorn or slurp their soda too loudly in sympathetic dread of the creatures.

I have now seen it. Quite enjoyable, although there were some parts that felt a bit off

The hobo trying to murder/suicide them out of grief was just totally unnecessary, and they should have just killed it with feedback rather than having guns work all of a sudden; it kept exposing its armor when it got close so there's no reason to have the shotgun only work after Mars Attacking it

Just saw it with the fiancee.

Holy hell. I'll post full thoughts in spoilers once I'm at a computer, but it's one of the best horror films I've seen. And I loathe the horror genre most of the time.

Just saw it, and for me it was a mixed bag. The concept is executed brilliantly and the tension at times is off the charts. I do think it would have been better with no ambient music in order to raise the alienation of the situation but that's just me. However there were some bad parts to it. A lot of the set up for the climax is very contrived and it gets a bit hard to buy into. On top of that the creatures seem less like biological monsters and more like ghosts or spirits given the fact they seem to be able to come from nowhere and the slightest sound sets them off no matter how far away they are. Also the solution for what they're weak to is made so obvious long before the characters can do anything about the final act of the movie is spent just waiting for them to play catch up with the audience which is never a good way to build an ending. The last shot of the film to is so out of place that I actually started laughing at how silly it was. So in the end a solid 2/3rds of a film brought down by a few pacing issues and a lackluster climax. I think it might have done better as a short film or like a Black Mirror episode.

I've only seen the trailers, but is it sound? Are the monsters that attack anything that makes loud noises weak to very loud noises or high frequencies or something?

Good guess. It's high frequency sound, it causes them to freak out and then they can be shot in the head to be killed. The oldest daughter has a hearing aid that gets feedback that causes the creatures to run off. They show this like 3 times before any of the characters catch on and make it very clear each time. It's very frustrating to watch characters play catch up when the story makes things obvious.

Why the military didn't figure this out I'll neber know...

Also why didn't they just live by a waterfall?

Honestly given the capacities of these creatures in terms of their ability to seemingly just appear and disappear as well as the fact that they're immune to guns and bombs despite their only defense being a biologically exoskeleton they make a lot more sense as like demons or spirits than they do aliens.

Eh, I thought it had earned that bit of catharsis.

Well, my guess is that the aliens were probably deposited all over the Earth simultaneously, so industry and infrastructure probably went down before the military did. Hell, there could still be some pockets of remanats that have figured it out. The just haven't been able to talk to anyone about it, or something.
