A Most Virtuous Nation "By sealing our work with our blood, we may see at least the bright dawn of universal happiness." - Maximilien Robespierre It is the fifth year of the republican calendar, the year 1797 in the calendar of the ancien regime. Much has changed since the proclamation of the French Republic. France stands triumphant over the old order, the monarchies of Europe humbled before the might of the republican army. France, as was her right, has established new regimes based on principals of enlightenment and equality. So called sister republics from the emerald isles of Ireland to the peninsula of Italy dot the landscape of Europe, nations founded in liberty and brotherhood, in solidarity with France, and in opposition to the monarchies of Europe. Yet, as the chaos of war passes, the chaos of peace is soon to appear. France, since those great August days, has been "revolutionary until the peace". Declared revolutionary until the dangers facing the nation will be passed, and constitutional government suspended until then. Now, the danger has passed, and the citizens of France, long under the iron hand of the Committee of Public Safety, its accumulated powers greater than any king France had once had, bows to the will of the people. As per the will of the representatives of the nation, the National Convention, the oak chest containing all the promises of the revolution, the Constitution of the Year I, has been opened, and the constitution to take effect as soon as elections were to be held. There will be no old men to hold the revolution back, no remnants of the past, a new self-denying ordinance was quickly passed in the dying days of the old National Convention, wholly handling the fate of the nation to the deputies chosen by the people in this new age There is much work to be done, many more dangers to be found. To remake society from one of privilege and despotism to one of equality and democracy is not an easy business. The revolution was transformative, yes, more than any in history, but to others, traumatic. Their way of life disappearing before their very eyes. And in the revolution, many grudges are still held, many people still unreconciled to the revolution, both within and without France. But, whatever else may happen, the world has been transformed, and none may undo what has been done. The revolution has left its mark, now and forever. Long live France. Long live the republic. One and indivisible. Hello everyone, and welcome to A Most Virtuous and Terrible Nation. My first foray into alternate history, and my first into quest making. In this world, the revolution has won, its enemies lay beaten and licking their wounds. The great nation stands triumphant, and strong. Yet, this is not the government of the Consulate. Not the government of the Corsican general who so claims to have tamed the revolution, but of Robespierre. For in this world, the event that would have been called The Thermidor Reaction had been prevented, and its perpetrators executed as enemies of the nation. The Committee of Public Safety further entrenches itself as the core of the revolutionary government, and through its leadership, brings the coalition to heel, creating republics in its stead, and allowing for the first constitutional state the republic has had since its proclamation. With peace, at least at the moment, achieved, France shall have its first true taste of democracy, and we will be playing as the members of the National Convention, newly summoned for a new era in France. I'll be trying something a bit new. Instead of voting as factions or parties, everyone will be voting as individuals. In the 18th century, especially in France, factions were something to be loathed. Many saw them as something akin to corporations, too focused on their own good compared to the good of the whole nation, and any good deputy of the republic would vote with their individual conscience instead of the whims of a faction. Yet, fear not you factional men and women, I have another mechanic for your factional needs! Despite this disapproval, and the government's attempt to squash or co-opt any non-government organizations, the nucleus of political groups will not simply disappear. France, during her revolutionary years was rather susceptible to influence outside the legislature, particularly the crowds in Paris, directed by independent clubs scattered throughout the country. You'll have the chance to form these groups and, if you wish, be members of multiple clubs as that was a common phenomenon during the revolutionary period. Of course, if you wish to not let yourself be tied down to any club, you may use your personal initiatives on other matters. For example: [] Lazare Carnot --[] Vote against the establishment of the empire. --[] Spend time spreading the word on how much Robespierre sucked and you had absolutely nothing to do with any questionable shit during the revolution. [] The Tulip Club --[] Spread the word on how the Dutch ruined tulips for everyone and rehabilitate this beautiful flower's reputation from these idiots up north. One of these was a political action as a member of the convention, and another is a personal one taken on your own initiative. If you wish to go at it alone, you will have more personal initiatives as your time will not be spent at a club, but your reach, again, will be not as strong. Try and fix that by adding to your reputation through individual action or through the companionship in clubs, grow your organization's development from local to national and push for your own vision of a proper France. But be warned, certain sections of the government will not take too kindly to any influence it sees as outside the interest of the nation. Be careful of appearing too ambitious, or too dedicated to your club, it will not reflect good on you. And may lead to rather severe consequences Good luck.
