So for the Great Powers, I notice that they have unique traits on the bottom, Like, Prussia has the Future of Germany and Great Britain has Defense of the Isle. What do these mean?

More or sort of their main objectives and directives. Goals and circumstances that may affect the playthrough which is different for every nation. So for the UK, defense of the Isles means that they absolutely don't want to lose control of their gate to another foreign power and will make sure to control others that are near them. Prussia has to deal with the historical unification of Germany and will have to wrestle for leadership with Austria, helping other German nations if they are in trouble before Austria does so.
 
question for you why would we not pick a great power? would the story change or the flavour be affected

ps i know you said funds and equipment but is that all

Beyond funds and all, which are pretty asymmetrical. The nation you pick is rather important for the objectives laid out by the government or by your freedom or just how much government support you would get. Also, the level of protagonism that your expedition takes in regards to other expeditions sent by your nation. If you pick the UK, then you are likely one of the dozens of regiments and brigades send. While if you pick a regional power then maybe you are just the one sent to the other place, this will mean that your accomplishments will be magnified in the eyes of your governments but also your failures. Reinforcements will be more focused on you only instead of being spread out to various military units, etc.

The flavor of the story also changes depending on the aims and goals of each nation. You may pass more unnoticed but at the same time, you are at risk of being pushed around by the greater powers if they believe that one of your finds is just too good to let a minor nation have it. Basically picking a non-great power has both its advantages and disadvantages.
 
Since Prussia is in the lead, what would Prussia's objectives be? I mostly chose Prussia for the chance of having a different colonial power unlike the UK, France or Spain...

While the other great powers might try and permanently colonize the new area I feel like Prussia woukd have a bigger interest in extracting resources and gaining advantages that they can use to further their ambitions of unification.

So less colonization in comparison to say UK in favor of more practical resources to bring back to Europe.

I disagree. For one thing the fact that the portal is in their territory Prussia needs to secure the other side of have a opening into the heart of their land. Secondly by having the portal lead to what I assume is land not water this allows Prussia to establish a colony without becoming a large scale naval power meaning this might be there only chance. And considering how important colonies are considered in this time period both from a economic point of view but also a cultural point of view Prussia is likely to go all in to ensure they have as much of Arcadia as they can get their hands on.
 
Russian traits are kinda, well, not fair for Russia of the time. How come the tech is one grade lower than Ottomans? The army is unprofessional when USA is professional and ottomans semi-professional?
Russia of the time is pretty weak and backwards for an european great power but it's a european great power nevertheless. It's got industry, universities, military academies etc.

Well Russia has always had difficulties trying to catch up to other European nations due to its sheer size. Education isn't widespread, industry is only really located in a few cities, the military was basically a ton of peasants given guns and told to March out and die. It's a great power due to its size and population. That was Russia's main problems for a very long time, even up to the Soviet Union.

It's fair (there are nuances ofc but it's a quest, not a scholarly work) to have it a step below the trailblazers of the time, but a step below the Ottomans is a bit too much.

Well, I suppose your right. I really don't know enough about the Ottomans in 1860 to form a proper comparison between Russia and the Ottomans. I just vaguely remember the Ottomans being called 'The Sick Man of Europe' or something like that.

I did some extra reading on the matter and you are right. The Russian army was fairly superior to the Ottoman one, after the Crimean war it seems that the Ottomans were still dealing with a considerable financial problem and one wouldn't expect their army to be that modernized anyhow. USA's case also deserves a revision.
