Chapter 1

I died. Or at least I think I did. But if I died that doesn't explain where I am now. I was an atheist and the other guys can't have been right either. This place doesn't look like any heaven or hell. Maybe purgatory. If purgatory is office themed. After being shot three times in a mugging gone wrong I find myself waking up in a mostly empty room with no obvious exit. All that's in this room is a desk, a chair, a computer, and some filing cabinets.Seeing nothing better to do I sit in front of the computer and look at the screen.

Welcome to your personalized reincarnation processing station. Unfortunately you have died. But luckily for you it has been decided to give you a second chance at life. Note that to make it easier on you we have decided to give you options based on human fiction. Click the screen to continue.

After a moment to process that I click the screen and a list pops up. I can hardly believe my eyes. It's a list of different species, some of which are clearly from science fiction, and some from fantasy. I distinctly notice that human is not an option. Off to the side of the list is a little popup saying that I would become the progenitor of whatever species I pick and that there would be ways of increasing the population that differ based on the species chosen. Considering how many options there are it's a good thing that there is a search bar at the top of the screen.

To be honest It was never a question what I would choose. I type in dragon in the search bar and am immediately intimidated by the sheer number of types of dragon to choose from. After skimming through the list I see an option labeled Custom Dragon. I click it and a new tab opens up, with customization options straight out of a video game character creation screen.

First choice is to pick the preferred environment. I select semi-aquatic which means that I'll be able to live both above and below water. Then it's time to pick what 'elements' for my kind of dragon to be aligned with. The more I pick the weaker the individual elements will be and the more specific the stronger but less versatile the element. I decide to get two, one offensive and one utility. For my first I type in lightning as it will be good both above and below water. For my second choice I pick life so I'll be able to heal if I so choose as well as potentially bless things with life. Next is to choose what my kind of dragon's specialties are. Again the more I choose the less powerful each individual choice is as well as varying on how specific I am. I pick shapeshifting, enchanting, and summoning.

Next it's time to pick how my kind of dragon will look. First is to decide the colors of the scales. I decide on making it so that the scales start out a dark blue before turning a bright green as the light hits them just right. I base the head off of a mexican alligator lizard but I add horns that curve horizontally towards the back of the head. The rest of the body is that of a western dragon with the front limbs being almost human-like in the hands only with scales and claws to differentiate them. I also make it so that it's possible to sit on our hind legs so that we can work with our front legs if we so choose. Lastly the wings are made so that we can fold them flat to our backs so they don't get in the way when we swim. When I finalize the appearance of my kind of dragon I'm asked to name the species. After a long deliberation I decide to name my kind of dragon as 'Life Bringer Dragons'.

Now the final thing to do before I am reincarnated is to pick my own name. I chose to call myself Rex Vitae as it is latin for king of life. It's a little pretentious but I like it. As soon as I finalize my name from one moment to the next I find myself in a cramped oval space. I think I'm in my egg.

Apparently my benefactors, whoever they may be, decided to put some information in my head to start me out. They did so because dragons are usually born with ancestral memories so that they can operate on a basic level from hatching. Mostly what they've put in my head is instructions on how my body works as well as some information on where I will hatch including languages. Unfortunately, according to the memories, while I'll be able to understand the languages I'll only be able to speak Draconic for the first two stages of my life when in dragon form. It also seems like the world I'm going to hatch into is an alternate earth where magic is starting to awaken, thanks to my benefactors sending people like myself to this world as magical species. I don't know what they do with those that picked the more science fiction themed species.

Enough woolgathering. I think it's time to hatch. I start to push and hit against the shell of the egg, eventually I make a hole in the shell and take my first breath of fresh air. Wait a minute I can smell what my memories identify as humans. Uh oh. Now that there is a hole in the egg I can also hear people talking as well. "Did you hear that? I think it came from this bush over here." The first voice sounds like a young boy of around nine or ten.

The second voice however sounds like it might belong to an older individual, maybe an older sister or his mother. "Stand back Tom, what if it's a goblin or something? I know we're in the park and it should be safe but the weaker monsters can show up anywhere. How do we know the Adventurers Association didn't miss one this morning?" I hope they don't take me for a monster.

According to my memories monsters can appear at night in areas not inhabited by people, the further from people they are the stronger the monsters that can manifest into the world. So in the park there should only be weaker monsters appearing like goblins and maybe if they are unlucky slimes. Slimes are hard to kill without magic and the world is only just getting magic.

I decide that my best bet is to get out of the egg and see about finding a place to hide, so I continue my efforts to get out. "Tom get out of there. I don't care how curious you are, I don't want you getting hurt." That's all the warning I get before I'm caught as soon as I start to crawl out of my egg. Apparently this Tom went into the bushes against his elders wishes and now is holding me by my stomach. I can't escape without hurting the kid and I won't have maiming a child be my first act in my new life. It's as I think this that he pushes his way through the bush.

"Look Angla! It's a baby dragon. Do you think mom will let me keep it?" I can now see who I presume to be his sister and she looks worried. Honestly if I was still human she would probably be cute but considering how I'm only the size of a house cat I can't help but feel intimidated.

"Tom put that down. You don't know what it'll do let alone if it's a monster." She is talking in a faux calm tone like someone trying to talk down a hostage situation before she looks thoughtful. "Though if it was a monster it would have attacked already, wouldn't it have? Heck if it was a wild animal it would have attacked already." She reaches out and gently takes me from his arms. "What makes you think this little guy is a baby anyway?"

"No fair I caught him, why do you get to hold him? And he's a baby because he just hatched duh." At this point I've mostly given up on escape. Hopefully they don't do anything too bad to me.

"I'm holding him in case he decides to escape or something. Look at those claws he could have scratched you. Don't just pick up strange things you find at the park. If he weren't so calm he could have hurt you." She takes a breath and continues. "I don't think your mother would let you keep him and besides we should take him to the police so they can pass him to the right department, and find out what he is and if he's dangerous. Though at this point I'm pretty sure he is harmless." Ow my pride. I swear if I end up being dissected first thing in my new life I'll cry.

Chapter 2

I feel like a failure as a dragon. Not a minute after hatching and I was already caught by a child. I'm currently sitting inside of an interrogation room just like you see in the movies with the one way glass and everything. I'm not here because they think I'm a criminal or something but because they had nowhere better to put me. Speaking about the one way glass I can actually tell that there is someone behind it through what my memories tell me is mana based vision letting me see their lifeforce. I think they are eating something based on the way they are moving.

Ah man, I'm starting to get really hungry. Apparently according to my ancestral memories, I was supposed to eat my egg's shell and then I'd be set for a couple of days but I didn't get the chance. My stomach lets out a loud growl and with it I can feel the last of my dignity deflate.

Officer Roger

I was told to keep an eye on the little dragon that those kids brought in today. Apparently it was a babysitter taking her charge to the park to play when the boy heard something in a bush. He, being a curious child, went to see what it was and found the dragon hatching out of an egg. The babysitter brought the dragon to the precinct so that it would be our problem. Which is fair enough but it's not really our department. So I'm stuck watching the little thing while we wait for the proper authorities to arrive.

I'm eating my lunch while watching the little dragon and then it lets out a loud growl from its stomach before deflating and letting out a pitiful whine. It looks so depressed it's hard to think it could be dangerous. The thing was caught by children after all.

Looking at the rest of my chicken sandwich I sigh and go to open the door to the interrogation room. I swear I'm starting to go soft.

I stop paying attention to the man behind the mirror and try to ignore my hunger. Maybe if I could get to sleep I could forget my situation. While I'm thinking this I hear the door to the room start to open. I shift my full attention to the door and the man behind the mirror walks in. He quickly puts a half eaten chicken sandwich with its wrapper on the floor of the room before leaving the room and closing the door. I barely notice him leaving my focus entirely on the sandwich.

I dash over to it and sink my teeth in. Instantly I'm in heaven. I barely notice that I'm letting out a purring noise as I dig in. Soon there isn't any of the sandwich left and I eat the wrapper as well after checking with my memories to see if it is safe to do so. Apparently I can eat just about anything. Anything organic that I eat will turn into raw lifeforce which my body can apparently use to fuel itself as a part of my elemental nature. Now that my hunger has been sated I can actually fall asleep.

Adventurer Association Chief Secretary Harrison

After being called to the police station to identify an unknown but so far docile creature I was not expecting to come across what for all the world looks to be a tiny sleeping dragon.

I quickly pull out my summoning board, some chalk, and a copy of the dictionary so that I may summon a spirit of knowledge. I set my summoning board on the table outside of the interrogation room, draw a circle, put the book in the middle, and pour in my mana while chanting seeming gibberish. Soon the book begins to float as the summoned spirit possesses it. I start to feel the slight tiredness that comes with spending mana as a tether is bound to the spirit. It will drain a portion of my mana for as long as I have it summoned. In exchange I can ask it questions which it might be able to answer for a price. The more obscure or valuable the knowledge is the higher the cost of mana. Unless it's bosses want the knowledge spread, in which case I'll be able to get it at a pittance.

I start my questions off by pointing at the tiny dragon and asking "What is that?"

I feel a trickle more mana spend itself and the book opens to reveal golden words swimming across its pages to form "Rex Vitae Primogeniture of the Lifebringer Dragons." Must have been a question that they wanted to answer as it barely cost me anything. So he's a Primogeniture and is in fact a dragon. Being a Primogeniture means that he is a VIP and that this is above my paygrade. The first Primogeniture was the first of the wood elves and was able to turn willing people into wood elves. I wonder if he will be able to do the same for Lifebringer dragons. Who would want to be a dragon is beyond me though.

Well time to call my superiors and see what we should do about him. If the name of his species is anything to go by he should be benevolent. Nothing like the Primogeniture of demons was. She was able to buy souls in exchange for favors which she could then turn into more demons. It wouldn't have been so bad if she and the other demons were more discerning about what kind of favors they would perform. It's a good thing we were able to banish her in the end.

I banish the spirit of knowledge and start to dial the guildmasters number. She picks up on the third ring. "Hey boss we have a Primogeniture down at the police station. You won't believe what they are."

"Well come out with it. What are they?"

"They are what my knowledge spirit called a Lifebringer Dragon. Don't start to get worried though they appear to just be a hatchling. In fact they are only the size of a house cat."

I wake up because the door is opening again. Looking up I see a tall black man walk into the room. "Hello I'm the chief secretary of the Adventurers Association. Just nod if you can understand me." I nod and he smiles. "Is it alright if I call you Rex?" I nod again though I'm not sure how he knows my name. "You are what's known as a Primogeniture meaning you are the first and probably the only one of your kind considering how young you are. You are akin to the old system of having endangered species only you are also a kind of person. So as long as you don't break any of our laws you are considered a VIP to the Adventurers Association.

"Meaning that you will be under our protection for as long as you need it. As well as being considered as an honorary member unless you would like to join in full." He waits for a bit after saying that and while I'm interested in joining I'd need more information to see if it's for me. "You don't have to decide right away of course we will have someone go over the requirements and responsibilities before you are asked again. Mind I am just here to talk to you until my boss gets here. She may have more to say herself.

"In the meantime why don't I tell you what it is like being part of the administrative branch of the Association." We spend the rest of the time waiting with him telling me about how he is in charge of gathering information for the AA as well as how he handles the paperwork for the guildmaster.

It's not long before the guildmaster arrives and walks through the door to the interrogation room. She's a thin but muscular lady with pointed ears and bark colored skin with green hair. "Hello Rex. I'm here to officially welcome you to Earth M and to lead you back to the guild hall where you will be provided room and board until you can get your own accommodations. Do you mind if I carry you? It would go much quicker if you let me. Not to mention if I'm seen carrying you, no one in the Association will mistake you for a monster." I nod and walk towards her where she kneels down to pick me up. It's a bit embarrassing but it's not so bad to be carried.

Soon we are in the parking lot and I'm lowered to a car seat then the key is turned and the car is going. "Are you hungry? We could stop and get something on the way." Now that she mentions it I am still a bit hungry so I nod. "Do you have any special dietary requirements?" At this I shake my head and she says "Excellent then do you mind if we stop for donuts? It's my cheat day after all." I nod excitedly considering how good the chicken tasted. I can't imagine how good the donuts will taste.

well isn't he just a cutie lol well its sad that your not writing on your other fic but thanks for the chapter and writing

Chapter 3
Chapter 3

Guildmaster Charlie

As I drive I keep half an eye on my passenger. He is currently purring while daintily eating the donut holes I got for him. It's hard to see him as anything but a child but I know that behind those eyes lives someone who has lived an unknown number of years. I suppose it is possible that they were a child in their past life, but it's just as possible that they could have been an old man well into their nineties. I'll have to ask if they ever figure out how to talk or when communication has been established by other means. Their front paws look human like maybe a text to speech device wouldn't be remiss, or maybe if he's able to support the cost a translation amulet could work. That is it will work if he speaks a language at all, but whos to say all these little noises he makes aren't a language. I mean there does seem to be a pattern to all the little growls, grunts, and tiny roars he makes, so maybe it's a language after all.

It doesn't feel like long at all before we arrive at the local chapterhouse for the AA. It almost looks like a castle and for good reason. It is the fallback point incase of monsters invading the town. There is an emergency bunker under the main building. It looks like a castle because of how many adventures use medieval weaponry.

After being lost in thought for a moment I get out of the car and go to the other side to pick up Rex. He must already know what I'm here for as he is sitting up on his back legs, with his tail wrapped around them, and is holding his front limbs up, looking for all the world like a baby asking to be picked up.

Guild receptionist Martha

It's a bit of a slow day, and I'm sitting bored at my desk, when in walks the guildmaster carrying a lizard of some kind in her arms. Other than me the first to notice is Obrick who leaves his table to go up to her and asks "Hey boss did you get a familiar or something?"

"No this here is Rex, he is a new Primogenter, and is currently unable to speak. Note that doesn't make him any less of a person and does not excuse us from our duty of protecting and housing him." She takes a moment to look around the room then asks "Is that understood?" to a round of nods and affirmations.

After she made her declaration she starts walking in my direction. She glances at my nametag before saying "Martha I need you to take Rex here to an empty room so that he can get some sleep. He has had a rather eventful day and I can feel him starting to doze off." She's right too. I can see him nodding off. He keeps falling asleep then his head starts to droop and his head shoots back up. She holds him out to me and after grabbing a key from under the desk I take him into my arms with his head cradled in the crook of my arm. Now that I can see him up close he looks to be a tiny dragon of some kind at least going by the wings. He's cute too.

______________________________________________________________________________

Rex Vitae

I don't remember much after stopping at the guildhouse. I was pretty tuckered out after the day I had and remember falling asleep in someone's arms. Now I'm waking up in what appears to be a bed that is much too big for me. Looking around the room I see it's a small dorm style room with only a bed, a wardrobe, and a nightstand. The room is still massive compared to me.

Honestly looking at the door I don't know how they expect me to open it. Maybe now would be a good time to try out my shapeshifting specialization. According to my ancestral memories I should be able to turn into things I am either familiar enough with or have observed for a period of time based on what I want to shapeshift into. Considering that I used to be a human I would hope that counts for both requirements. I focus and close my eyes. Soon I can feel my body shifting and I open my eyes to see that I was partially successful. I managed to turn myself into a human but I'm a toddler. A naked toddler with horns sweeping back along the side of my head, and a long prehensile tail. Apparently with practice I'll be able to perform a more perfect transformation, as well as changing my physical age.

While I'm looking down at myself there is a knock at the door. I guess they never expected me to open the door. I decide to try talking to see if I can now speak English and mangege to say in a youthful voice "Come in." Of course I quickly hide my lower half under the blanket.

______________________________________________________________________________

Martha

I pause at hearing the voice of a small child. I double check the room number and see it's the same room I put Rex to sleep in. So how do I hear English from the other side? I turn the doorknob to see a kid with blue green hair and horns partially hiding under the blanket of the bed. "Rex is that you?"

"Um yeah I figured out how to take human form. Uh before we move on can I please get some clothes?" His face reddens when he asks this.

"For now can you turn back into your true form so that you can have breakfast? Unfortunately we don't have any clothes in your size in the guild but I can send someone out to get some while we eat."

"Ok but before I turn back can you tell me who you are? I don't remember much from after I went into the main building. I think I fell asleep." Saying this he drops his head. He is so cute when he's embarrassed.

"I'm Martha, I've volunteered to take care of you for now. At least until you can take care of yourself." After introducing myself he scrunches his face up in concentration and starts to shift back into a dragon. It's actually quite interesting to watch and a bit disturbing.

Soon he's fully back to being a house cat sized dragon and I pick him up to start heading to the reception/mess hall. For some reason the PR division insists that people should eat in full view of the public, something about making us seem more human or something. Once we are there I flag down a cadet to get the clothes. He gives me a weird look but runs off to go to the store. Since it's morning a lot of the cleaning crews are out hunting monsters and the place is pretty empty with only those who have other tasks and the administrative branch behind.

I go and grab a couple of menus and set one in front of Rex. "Just point at what you want to eat and I'll order it for you." After saying this I check my menu to see what they have for today.

______________________________________________________________________________

Rex Vitae

Checking over the menu I see the cheapest item on the menu is goblin steak served with mashed potato and slime jello. The most expensive is hydra steak served with mandrake leaf salad. All the meals on the menu are monster based. In the end I decide on the goblin steak as my ancestral memories say I couldn't fully process all the energy I'd get from the other menu items. Apparently you can get more mana from eating monsters and the stronger the more mana you can get.

When I point at the first item on the menu Martha says "Are you sure that's what you want? I know it's the cheapest option but you are a guest and all your living expenses are covered as far as the guild is concerned." I nod my head and she says "If you are sure then I won't stop you."

She flags down a waiter and places our order. It's not a long wait for our food after that. When the waiter returns with our food I catch a whiff of it and it smells heavenly. I wasn't paying attention to what she ordered but hers looks to be some kind of red fish. Mine is a green steak, with mashed potatoes and a blue jello to the side. I sit on my hind legs and grab a spoon to start shoveling the mashed potatoes into my mouth. When I picked up my silverware I heard a muffled laugh but when I looked I saw a man very pointedly not looking this way. I hear another laugh when I grab a knife and fork to cut my steak but this time I ignore it.

whelp you make rex even more adorable in doing so made me smile thanks dude and thank you for writing and for the chapter

Chapter 4
Chapter 4

Martha

Watching Rex eat was really cute. I could watch that all day, but I think it's about time for him to get some exercise. Plus some fresh air should do him some good. "Hey Rex is there anything you would like to do?" He looks thoughtful for a moment then starts to move his arms like he's swimming. Just to be sure I ask "You want to go swimming?" He nods and I say "Well you have two options we could go to the pool, or we could go to the lake." He raises his hand with two fingers showing. Guess we're going to the lake.

He looks so excited but I have to tell him to wait. "First we will wait until your clothes arrives. Then we have to get bodyguards just in case someone decides that you are a monster or we run into a real one. I'm not exactly a fighter myself and you are the only one of your kind. We can't afford to lose you." At this some of his excitement melts away but he is still exited enough to be practically vibrating.

This is the scene the cadet walks in on. "Ma'am I got the childrens clothes you asked me to get for you." I thank him and he sets the package on the table before looking at the bouncing Rex and saying "Ma'am that's the new primogenter right?" After I nod he continues with "Well could you tell me what has him so excited? He looks like a kid in a candy store."

"Well we are going to the lake, but honestly I think he just needs to burn off some energy. He has been cooped up since he hatched after all." After answering his question I dismiss him and he goes back to whatever he was doing before I asked him to get the clothes.

I pick up the package and head over to the reception desk. "Excuse me Mark, can you post a message on the quest board? Rex wants to go swimming at the lake and we are going to need bodyguards." The quest board is an app that the guild uses to put up missions with rewards for adventures. It lets adventures know what the job entails and what the pay is. Since Rex is a VIP of the AA the reward is paid out of the guild's coffer.

______________________________________________________________________________

Obrick

I'm taking it easy today, but I do need to do some work. I've been saving up to buy a house. I only need about 300$ more to make the down payment. I need a bit of a break though. I think I'll just find a nice easy task even if it doesn't pay as well as hunting monsters in the wilderness, or caravan guard duty. Looking through the quest board app on my phone I see a new quest popup and it pays well but is a short term guarding mission at mermaid lake. I accept the quest as fast as I can, it's only a four person job, and two of the slots were filled before I managed to hit accept.

The meeting point is right outside of the guild house. So I arrive before any of the other adventures as I was relaxing in my dorm room. Waiting for me there is Martha who was my favorite receptionist and the little dragon from yesterday. As I'm arriving from behind them it's the dragon who notices me first. Maybe he could smell me. Him turning around attracts the attention of Martha who says "Obrick Your part of the escort today?"

"I'm taking a break from out of town jobs, I need to relax, and this job seemed easy enough. It also helps that the pay is good for a short trip to mermaid lake." From personal experience there should only be goblins and other weak monsters between the town and the lake.

______________________________________________________________________________

Rex Vitae

I can barely contain my excitement, as we wait for the rest of my bodyguards to show up. I don't even know why I'm so excited anyway. Maybe Martha is right and I just need the exercise, but my instincts are practically yelling at me that I need to go to the lake. Probably has something to do with my preferred environment. With my every thought seemingly being twisted back to the lake, I almost don't notice Martha and Obrick flirting.

Speaking of Obrick he is a large bear of a man of irish descent, with a large two handed battle axe, and armor made of some kind of chitin. I'd hate to see the size of the bugs he must have gotten the chitin from.

While I try to take my mind off the wait by studying Obrick a pair of twins starts to make their way to us. One of them is wielding a bow with a short spear for backup. The other is wielding a staff that to my mana sight seems to be covered in icey mana. I can't help but notice that both twins have gills and scales on their necks. Aside from the scales and gills they look like perfectly normal human women albeit wearing chainmail. They introduce themselves as Viki and Veronica.

After another five minutes and much impaintiant fidgeting the final person who accepted the quest shows up. It's the guy who was laughing at me using silverware. He's wielding a short spear and a kite shield. He's also decked out in leather armor of some kind. He walks up to me and kneels so that he's closer to my height and says "Hello little dragon. My name is Hendricks and I'll make sure you stay safe on your journey." Considering how polite he's being I think I'll forgive him for laughing at me.

Now that everyone who is coming is here Martha speaks up. "Okay time to head out." And with that said the bodyguards move into a square formation around me and Martha while we start to walk along. Of course Martha quickly picks me up as I start to lag behind.

______________________________________________________________________________

Hendricks

I can't believe my luck not only did I get the last open position for a easy but high paying job, I also get to interact with a real bonafide dragon. I've loved dragons since I was a young boy. I always thought it was a shame that the world has magic but not a single dragon. Of course that changed yesterday. Who cares if he's tiny? He's still only a baby. I think he will grow to a great size eventually, but for now he's cute, tiny, and in need of a protector.

______________________________________________________________________________

Rex Vitae

Soon after leaving the walled town we were attacked by a pack of five goblins. They didn't stand a chance. It was an absolute slaughter. The first one to go down had the misfortune of stepping out of cover in front of Obrick and was promptly beheaded. The two to the right were peppard by shards of ice then shot with arrows to their weak points. The two to the left were harried by Hendricks who managed to skewer one before Obrick killed the final one by splitting it in half.

The rest of the trip is uneventful and when we exit the woods to see a sparkling lake surrounded by families and their guards. I can hardly contain myself. With a laugh Martha releases a wiggling me to the ground. Where I immediately run towards the water my guards keeping pace. It's a good thing they do as several of the families and guards look to tense up at the sight of me before relaxing upon seeing my guards.

Soon I reach the water and it feels like an itch, I didn't know about was scratched. My instincts relax and I start to lower myself into the water. My instincts say that I should be fine but my human memory says I will drown if I try to breathe water. So achingly slowly I go completely under the water and let the air out of my lungs, and breath in water. I'm fine. It's an odd experience but not unpleasant.

As I'm getting used to the sensation I feel arms reach around my stomach and suddenly I'm out of the water, and in Martha's hands. "Are you trying to drown yourself!?!?" Instead of answering this is when I cough out a portion of the water from my lungs and onto Martha further soaking her sweater, which was already wet from her 'rescue' of me. If only I could talk in this form then I could tell her that I'm amphibious.

After much pantomiming I manage to get across that I'm fine and that she should let me go. With great reluctance she sets me loose. I decide that until I can explain that I won't drown I'll keep my head above the water. Should spare her a heart attack.

Well, it'll take him 5 years or so to stop being a newborn, and another 100 before he hits young adulthood.

Might want to get used to being treated like a child for a while there, Rex

Chapter 5
Chapter 5

Martha

After nearly giving me a heart attack, Rex has kept his head above the water. I'm still going to have to talk to the guildmaster about him possibly trying to drown himself. I've been keeping a close eye on him in case he tries again. Hopefully he just hadn't figured out how to swim yet. If thats the case he looks to have gotten the hang of it now.

When it's time for lunch I leave the twins to watch Rex. While I go to a stall selling grilled fish on skewers, and buy two per person in our group. I'm given a paper bag to hold them in and go on my way. When I get back It's to see all four of the bodyguards standing around Rex by the shore of the lake. When I get close enough I start to hand out the fish skewers to thanks from everyone. "After we finish eating I think we should head back to the guildhall." Everyone agrees except for Rex who looks to be overly interested in eating his fish. It seems to completely occupy his attention.

As soon as he finishes his skewers, I pick him up and he looks a bit confused, so I explain "It's time to head back." He looks at the water longingly then turns back to me and nods. On the way back to town we join a caravan that was transporting goods and people back and forth between New Magnolia and Mermaid Lake.

Caravan Boss Candi

I picked up a strange group to come back to town with. They arrived at the lake by themselves but wanted to travel back with my caravan. They are made up of four high power adventures and a civilian holding a winged lizard. The lizard could be mistaken for a dragon if you ignore how small it is. I suppose it could be her familiar.

Other than the new additions the trip back to town goes as uneventfully as the trip to and from the lake. The weaker monsters aren't particularly smart but they are smart enough to know not to attack a caravan with so many people. Even if most of those people are civilians without a bit of fight in them.

Rex Vitae

When we get back to the guildhouse Martha says "Now that you've calmed down we can see about getting you into some clothes. Then we can go visit the guildmaster." I noticed that she said we with regards to me being dressed. I don't know why she said we, but despite my misgivings I nod and she starts carrying me back to the room I was sleeping in. I guess it's been reserved for me.

When we enter my room I hop onto the bed then crawl under the covers, so I can shapeshift without her seeing anything. "Come now no need to be shy. I have a nephew who I babysit occasionally and I change his diapers. You probably don't have anything I haven't seen before."

I stick my now human head out from the covers and say "Nope just pass me the clothes. I don't want to be seen naked so I'll just stay under this here blanket. Unless you want to leave the room for a moment." She does leave the room after putting the package of clothes down on the bed. She also looks amused as she leaves saying to call her when I need help.

Opening the package shows that inside is a blue button up shirt and black sweatpants both in my size. First I put on the sweatpants but they get caught on my tail. So I poke a hole in them with my claws and thread my tail through. The button up shirt however is easy to put on since I don't have to worry about it getting caught on my horns. I look a bit goofy in my mismatching clothes but at least I'm dressed. I call Martha back in and she pouts when she sees I don't need help.

"Well now that you are dressed, we can go see the guildmaster. She wants to have a chat with you now that you can talk." When I give the okay she grabs my hand and starts to lead me to the door. Soon enough she leads me through several hallways then up some stairs and finely to a waiting room. Sitting at a desk by the door to the next room is the chief secretary who I never got the name of. He notices us and smiles before saying "Hello Rex, Martha, go on in. She is expecting you."

We go through the door into a somewhat sparse office. The only decorations in the room, unless you count the furniture, are armor and weapons such as a spear and shield, sitting near a bow with a quiver hanging next to it. As I'm looking around the room I hear a cough and look up to see the guildmaster was watching me the whole time. She smiles, nods, and says "Rex, if it's okay with you I'd like to ask a few questions. Namely, I want to know what you are capable of. So to start us off I'd like to ask if you have any breath effects you can use? I only ask because nonhuman people tend to have similar abilities to their fictional or mythological counterparts."

"Yes I have two breath effects one is lightning aspected the other is life aspected. I believe I don't have to explain lightning so I will leave it as me not being sure how strong it is for now. For life I believe I could heal others who I breathe it on. My ancestral memories also say that it is used in a ritual to turn willing people into dragons."

"I hope you don't mind but we're going to have to test your breath effects before you are cleared to use them in public. On the plus side we are the authority on magic in the land so once we say you are clear to use them on people most will respect our opinion. With our seal of approval you can start taking jobs to heal people and what few animals remain." She stares me down for a moment, possibly wanting to see what I thought of that, then continues with "Besides your breath effects do you have any other powers, abilities, or skills that come naturally to you? For example Wood Elves like me are supernaturally good at wielding a bow and moving through forests."

"Well I am able to breathe water. I wish I had remembered to tell Martha this morning but I was distracted at the time. I nearly gave her a heart attack when I allowed myself to sink to the bottom of the lake." I pause to look over at Martha to see how she is taking this news and see her with her face in her hands so I turn back to the guildmaster. "I can also shapeshift, enchant, and summon things. Though the only one I've actually started to practice is shapeshifting as you can see. My ancestral memories came with a few simple enchantments, and summoning spells."

"We'll have to go over what those enchantments and spells are sometime in the future. For now would you be willing to tell me how old you were before you came to Earth M? Note you don't have to answer if you don't want to, I'm only asking because I'm curious, and the answer won't even be put in your file."

"I was seventeen when I died, and that's all I want to say on that." To change the subject I say "The other day I was told that if I wanted to I could join the Adventures Association. Would you mind explaining what my responsibilities would be if I joined?"

"Well you would get access to the Quest Board app. Which would let you take jobs posted for adventures. These jobs can be anything from gathering rare materials, hunting monsters, or escort missions. Being an adventurer is a high paying job, of which the only requirements are to use your powers responsible, to help your fellow adventure to the best of your ability, protect the weak, and there is the fact that the guild you work out of gets a cut of any profits you gain from adventure work."

Hendricks

I arrive at the waiting room and walk up to Harrison and say "I'd like to see the guildmaster. Could you please set up a meeting with her? I need her permission for something."

"Certainly but if you are willing to wait she is in a meeting right now but that shouldn't last for much longer. So if you wait, you can have your meeting today."

"Thanks Harrison. I think I'll wait." I take a seat and pull out my phone to read some webnovels to pass the time. It doesn't feel like much time has passed before the door to the guildmaster's office opens and out steps a humanoid Rex along with Martha. I don't know if he's cuter like this or as a tiny dragon.

ToddlerRex walks into the adventure guild common room, only to find it's currently hosting a knitting club.

"Curse my adorably pinch-able rosy cheeks!"
