With potential enemies all around, your lack of magicka is far too much of a risk, so you do the sensible thing and play up your old age by faking a coughing fit.
"Cynric? Are you alright? Where is Louise?" Quelana asks worriedly, causing the Pinkette to shift her attention to the immortal and leap from the wall. Signalling for her to be patient, you rummage through your bag for your Elixer of Magicka and swiftly gulp down the flavorless liquid.
Not a moment later, the Pink haired woman marches up to the two of you with one hand on her weapon and the other holding the helmet to her iron armor. Looking you up and down, she scowls briefly before speaking, "Judging by your... attire, you must be this Cynric fellow that my daughter mentioned."
"Indeed, a pleasure to finally meet the mother of my apprentice." You answer with a curt bow.
"Cattleya speaks highly of you, though as far as first impressions go, I find myself disappointed. Where is Louise?" Karin demands, anger leaking through her stony facade at the name of her youngest child.
"Ah, yes... that." Gesturing to the immortal, you continue, "This is Quelana of Izalith, whom your daughter and I were assisting before I arrived here... It would seem that Louise is having difficulties with the scroll that would allow her to replicate my spell, so I must be off."
Turning to leave, you hear both women follow. "Very well, I shall accompany you and see to her health for myself." The duchess says behind you, the sound of her heavy boots making you wonder how she didn't sink in the ash. "Make no mistake, though I am grateful for what you've done for my daughters, if I find that you have engaged in any untoward action against either of them, I will not hesitate to cut you down."
As you walk back into the hollow tree, you respond, "Madam, I can assure you of two things. Firstly, I have no such interest in anyone, much less those young enough to be my grandchildren." Looking over your shoulder, you cast Levitate as you make eye contact. "Second, you do not scare me, 'Heavy Wind'."
Wrapping an arm around Quelana's shoulders, you fly up through the tangled branches and roots, past the lizard-frogs, and out the tunnel where the bonfire crackles. Setting down at the base of the swamp, you let the spell wear off as you wait for Karin to catch up.
"A warning next time, if you would." Quelana grumbles, straightening her robes. Looking "You're injured."
Waving off her concerns, you scan the swamp for any approaching wildlife. "Merely a flesh wound, a few burns are a worthy trade for victory."
"You didn't let the child come to harm, did you?" The immortal asks worriedly as she uses a wall of fire to push back the swamp. Stomping up the tunnel, Karin waits for your answer as well, though not before eyeing Quelana with suspicion at the hooded woman's wandless magic.
"Louise is fine, a bump on the head at least and at most she made a mistake with her lightning spell and injured her arm. Nothing that cant be healed with a wave of the hand and a bit of magic." You assure them, stepping forward in an effort to get the party moving. Thanks to your apprentice's earlier efforts, the swamp is mostly free of pests and you arrive at the spider-witch's lair.
Traveling down the tunnel, Quelana grows increasingly nervous as approach the end and the glow of molten stone casts shadows on the walls. Not stopping to deal with her hesitance, you enter the large chamber to find the room littered with debris. Rubble from the tower is strewn across the room, dozens of spider legs are twitching as they grow out of the lava pools around the room, the spike covered knight lies dead in a pile of scorched bricks, and Louise is nowhere to be seen. Casting Clairvoyance, a golden trail leads into the ruined tower. Following the path and ignoring the gasps of surprise from the women, you climb up onto the crumpling masonry and hop down into the tower. Silk and eggs cover much of the interior surface, getting thicker along the hallway that your spell directs you into. At the end of the path, you see your apprentice cradling an arm to her chest and sitting down next to one of those parasite infested people.
Looming behind the girl is another of those arachnid-women, pale hands stretching outward as firelight glows from deep within the room. Karin's composure cracks as she draws her blade and sprint's down the hall.
