RWBY. Definitely RWBY as our next goal. I've stated before why it's the best, but i'll list some of the reasons again. RWBY has aura, which is an incredibly useful personal force field like ability that can also make you faster and stronger. In addition to that, unlocking your aura gives you a semblance, a unique superpower based off of your soul. All of this is incredibly useful for us (particularly the force field part as most of the main cast is rather squishy right now), but even more than that is the ease in which aura can be unlocked. Most other powers are somewhat genetic in nature (bending, chakra) or require special circumstances to get even in their worlds (Devil Fruit), whereas with aura, all we need to do is meet someone decently trained as a hunter or a rather skilled criminal/terrorist and bam! we have aura unlocked. Yes it will require some training after that, but there are programs for that and we can constantly work on it in other worlds. We can also bring it back and give it to all our X-com friends too.

The technology is also a valuable resource to gain. RWBY technology is rather advanced, especially in regards to robotics and weapons. There is the slight issue that all of it is Dust reliant, however there are ways to get large amounts of Dust within RWBY so we can run that technology for a very very long time.

Finally there is the potential for powerful magics in the form of Maidens and Relics. Trying to obtain them would gain the attention of the major players in the setting, but the boosts they could give would be quite high, and once obtained we could just leave back through the oblivion gate.

We can gain a lot from this world and our magic will give us a lot of outside context abilities to help deal with many enemies in RWBY.

Oh right, better vote too,

Like Clockbuster and Vista.

Mass Paralysis is just so handy, isn't it? But holy smokes Cynric has an even worse bedside manner than Louise, though I suppose it's only natural that she emulate her teacher.

Conflict drive's a hell of a thing, eh?

Before stepping out into the streets, you reanimate four of the corpses to drive the trucks back to the outpost, eliciting a shriek of alarm from the children.

HA! Amazing. Watch photos of zombie truck drivers getting posted to PHO, then someone flips out when they recognize their recently deceased grandmother. But hey the Undersiders are pretty efficient, I'm mean I'm sure Coil helped but they do good work.

I'm with @Blueshift, I think RWBY was what the thread was leaning towards anyways before the Recall mishap. Aura would be a great boost to our heroes, never mind what kind of Semblances they might develop. Unless there's some terrible drawback to using your soul as a force field, RWBY seems like a solid pick.

oh shit right

[X] Help Vahlen set up and run tests on the Parahumans.

It'd be a bigger dick move than usual if we kept them so long their powers never come back. Let's try to hurry that along.

Preparing to Science!
By the time you returned to the outpost, the sun had already begun it's descent and Alec had worn down your patience. The boy spent half the trip complaining about his treatment and the rest spouting nonsense about too much heat which was, quite frankly, ridiculous. The explosions didn't even create that much fire. Still, while you only needed to have Louise blow up three brightly flashing vehicles that got in the way, guiding the undead through the streets still took far too long for your liking.

After helping Moira's people finish moving all manner of computer and 'scanners' into the building, you join the woman herself as she observes the proceedings. As usual, Moira doesn't bother to look at you as she says, "I was beginning to think you weren't going to join us."

"Yes, well I was needed elsewhere. I trust the samples and research I have provided have been useful?"

"And you would be incorrect." She replies with a scoff. "Those cadavers are worthless in this line of research and not a shred of paper your contacts brought had any useful information. The poor excuse of a scientific community this world has have all but given up on asking why. Instead, they seem to have focused entirely on the sociopolitical repercussions of parahumans and accepted the illogical theory that powers come from what is essentially a brain tumor."

Pointing an accusing finger at Clockblocker, who is nursing a stamina potion next to Vista, she continues, "That child even had the temerity to laugh when asked whether or not any parahumans he knew of have the ability to read minds. 'The amount of energy and computational power needed to intercept and decipher the thoughts of another sapient being exceed the limits of the human brain' but stopping an object in time or acting as a living Alcubierre drive is perfectly reasonable. I have half a mind to petition the Commander to place a bounty on the fool who published that waste of ink."

"Disregarding the research then, what have you discovered?" You ask, hoping to distract her from the building rage.

"Other than that the new lobe serve no real purpose, not a lot." Vahlen sighs, flipping her datapad around to show a colorful image of a three dimensional brain. She circles her finger around an unusual structure in the organ. "The tissue of the 'Gemma', as it is called, is just a mass of neuron-less flesh and veins... though there was one interesting discovery. Once the subjects returned to this world, they experienced a brief loss of consciousness and a spike of adrenaline registering on our implanted probes. While that sounds like a minor stroke that many suffer from daily and would normally be no cause for concern after a brief checkup, the situation and it's coinciding with readings of some exotic energy in the lobe tell us otherwise. If we didn't already have our sensors adjusted to detect something similar from your portal, we honestly might not have noticed."

Absorbing her summary of their research so far you turn to watch Clockblocker freeze a block of wood in the air while frustrated scientist wave their devices at it and him. Vista seems to be doing much better than before, if lacking sleep, and is waiting for her turn. Off to the side of the room, you can see the orange teen shivering as two people in full body suits swab his skin and Gregor is being run through a tube-like machine. The last group in the room contains Alec and Louise, who are waiting impatiently near the door.

Status: Healthy
Magicka: (650/650)

Choose:

[] Have Alec explain his power before using it on Louise while you and Moira observe.

[] Wait for the clean-room to be finished and then ask for a volunteer. Be sure not to inform them that they're going to be vivisected, that would just cause unnecessary drama.

[] Kill Alec and reanimate him to see if you can control his power or understand more about it. The monstrous pair would be more convenient due to not being close to Louise's friend or part of a large organization, but their mutations might contaminate the experiment.

[] If they are creating a similar effect as your Oblivion Gate, perhaps you could increase the effect to something more easily studied.
-[] Clockblocker or Vista. 50/50 chance.
-[] Gregor or Newter. 50/50 chance.
-[] Alec.

[] Write in.

A/N: 50/50 chance applies to the choice of test subject, not the chance for success.

-[X] Alec.
The only option without the 50/50, which surely makes it 100% success! For !Science!

While an amusing expression, isn't Saruman always geriatric?

Are mythological settings an option? E.g. Avalon or what's going on in the Edda and the Kalevala?
Is he? I was under the impression that geriatric was generally used to refer to those elderly people who need almost constant healthcare. Either way, it was just an offhand insult, so meh.

Are you meaning the actual mythological stories or derivative works? Because while I've read much of the Edda in the past and know several variants of Arthurian legend, I don't think I know of anything in the Kalevala. I'm going to go with probably not, since they're laden in allegory and there is no one true interpretation for any of them as far as I know. Maybe the Edda will be an option if you guys ever get close to exhausting the current list and there's enough demand.

The only option without the 50/50, which surely makes it 100% success! For !Science!
It's not a 50/50 success, that's just a coinflip on which of the two is chosen.

This feels like the least chance of Entities figuring out how to work Oblivion gates.

A Moment With The Shinobi
"What even am I?" Her teammate asked, staring with unfamiliar eyes at his cold, dead hands. His face was all wrong, his skin almost blue in it's lifeless pallor, and most disconcerting was just how much bigger he was in that adult's body.

It had been days since she'd returned from Brockton Bay and longer still was the time between her initial trip to the strange world. Not once in all that time had he said a word to her and she didn't know what to do. Even if he was always too domineering before Cynric summoned them, he was a member of Squad Eight and she should have been there to help him.... but she hadn't been and then he had died.

Shino tried his best to comfort the Inuzuka over the loss of his partner, but the reserved boy would never be able to empathize with that kind of loss. Their relationship with kikaichu always was detrimental to his clan when it came to social interactions and understanding others, this was just another example. If she hadn't been so caught up on Louise's actions, could they have found some way to contact Cynric earlier and return? Would that have helped Kiba's situation?

Deep down she knew it wouldn't have, but the guilt was still there.

Taking one of his large hands in hers and trying not to show her discomfort, she activated her Byakugan. He was the same as she'd done it before, using her eyes to confirm it as fact the moment Shino explained what had happened. His undead body had no chakra pathways, no blood flowing through it, not a single sign of life other than the faint glow of Kiba's spiritual energy. Everyone had a distinctive chakra and that was all she needed to know it was really him after months of spending almost every day with her team.

"You're still you." She answered firmly, there was no room for insecurity... she couldn't allow any sign of being unsure in her answer or who knew what he would do. "You're still Kiba, just as surely as I am me and Shino is still himself."

Not looking toward her, he let out an unnecessary breath. "How can you be so sure?"

"Because I can see your spirit." Hinata answered, placing a hand over where his chakra coils should be. "You can't fool the Byakugan, Kiba."

"Well I don't feel like me... I don't feel anything at all! I don't have chakra, someone else's face stares back from my reflection, A-Akamaru's... Damnit, why am I even still here?"

Trobror's words on death and friendship were still fresh in her mind when she returned through the portal with that poor legless girl and found out about Kiba. She wasn't sure how she felt about what the ancient alien had told her, but there was one thing she couldn't deny. Dead is dead, no matter how or why. Akamaru was dead, just like those criminals Louise killed, and nothing would...

"Akamaru's dead." She whispered in wonder, her eyes widening as an idea struck.

"You think I don't know that?!" Kiba snarled, but she wouldn't be deterred.

Slapping a hand over his mouth in a maneuver she would never have considered before leaving her world, Hinata halted his interruption and explained, "Think about it, Kiba! Akamaru is dead, but so were you! Why wouldn't the same thing work for him?"

As the meaning of her words dawned on him, his eyes lit up with hope. "You're a genius! Why didn't I think of that earlier? Do you think the old guy'll do it? Ah, who cares, I'll make him if I have to!"

Smiling softly at the boy, she just hoped it wasn't too late... and that he didn't try to kiss her. That would be disgusting for so many reasons she didn't want to think about.

As he climbed to his feet and awkwardly ran off, she doubted he had any idea where to actually find Cynric. Following after him, they found their way inside the underground base.

Most of the adults gave them no more than a wary glance as they wandered deeper down, passing grey walled rooms full of strange things and glowing objects. Since neither of them wanted to interact with Doctor Vahlen, the third subfloor was where they eventually found themselves. There was only two large rooms on either side of the ladderwell that would eventually be replaced with something called an elevator or lift depending on who she asked. It was the first time she had been so far down, though that was probably because she left before they were even close to excavating that floor.

Taking the lead when Kiba seemed confused on where to go, she entered the more active half. Mechanical arms twitched as people in loose fitting jumpsuits did... something to them and many men and women were working on smaller machines around the room. The one she was looking for was up on a metal walkway above it all, the first to spot her entrance.

Hopping up into the air and leaping off the nearest wall, she easily stuck to the ceiling and walked over to Raymond Shen. Doing her best to appear confident when everyone stopped to stare at her, she dropped down and greeted him with a bow. "G-good afternoon, Mr. Shen."

"And to you." The elderly man replied warmly, bowing slightly in return. "It's not often we get guests wandering into the workshop, would you like a tour?"

"Oh... No thank you, Kiba and I are looking for Mr. Tyne." Hinata answered, suddenly reminded why she rarely went near the balding man. The way he always watched her when they were in the same room made her uncomfortable, so she really didn't want to spend more time with him than necessary.

Unfortunately, he brushed off her words, putting a hand on her back and started to guide her toward the stairs as he said, "Well, last I heard he went through the portal to gather supplies. Now, since he will probably take a while, perhaps-"

"I'm sorry, but we really should go find him." Hinata interrupted, stepping away and looking to see Kiba making his through the room below. When she turned back to the old man, he was staring at at her, eyes filled with regret.

Shaking himself out of whatever melancholy he'd fallen into, he smiled sadly and sighed, "Feel free to visit some time... you're only young once, you shouldn't throw away your childhood in your rush to achieve."

"I... I suppose it wouldn't hurt to come back later." She replied reluctantly before hopping over the railing to save Kiba the trip. Turning back to wave goodbye, more out of courtesy than any want to encourage him, she felt a little guilty when she saw him wave with a forlorn expression.

It seemed everyone was depressed lately, even creepy old men.

Shaking her head when Kiba asked if Cynric was nearby, she followed after the Inuzuka. prayed that his hopes weren't going to be crushed. Pausing his unsteady run, her teammate turned to give her a roguish grin and cheered, "Come on, let's go find the bastard already."

She prayed that his last hope wasn't about to be cruelly crushed.

A/N: Important question... do you guys want the top two winning votes or just the number one and then another vote on how to proceed?

Wait shen's Lily (from xcom 2) didn't make it thats so sad... In almost unrelated news no engineering feats of flying robots...

Also I'm surprised nobody on base has asked cynric about necromancy or rather trying to conjure their loved ones spirits from their doomed/dead world..

No love for the Creepy Old Men, no love at all. A sad state of affairs tis is indeed.

Assuming things happen off script, can you imagine how Cyndric would respond? And what he'd actually do.

They've all been busy lately. Rest assured, you'll be flooded with requests once things calm down and everyone learns that your necromancy can do more than make zombies.

What are the winning options?
#1 Have Alec explain his power and use it on Louise.
#2 If they are creating a similar effect as your Oblivion Gate, perhaps you could increase the effect to something more easily studied.
-[X] Clockblocker or Vista. 50/50 chance.

It's impressive how many works of fiction have a "there way". Why is it never a "here way" or a "somewhere else way"?
Not to mention the lack of yesways, noways, eitherorways... Though there is sometimes a Norway.

Ba dum tss... No, but seriously, I usually manage to catch there/their when I make the mistake, so thanks.
