You are a Driver. One of the many within the world of Alrest. Within your hometown of Torigoth, you found a core crystal, one that had been passed down through your family through generations. You resonated with it, the blade bonding with you. She's a rather cheerful girl, one that's more than happy to be your partner, provided you find her strong opponents to fight.

You've always wanted to leave the den, so to speak, and, now that Zenobia has resonated with you, you have that opportunity, and you've taken it with two hands, quietly packing up and getting ready to set out on your journey. While your parents and grandparents may disapprove of your choice, at this point, you don't care. It's time to set out on your own adventure! Of course, that plan gets torpedoed pretty quickly...
Running Away

Packing everything up to run away was an experience, you could say that much. The days spent carefully squirreling away your belongings, specifically the ones that you absolutely had to take with you, into a hiking backpack. Buying items from stores, then immediately hiding them away, afraid that your parents would cotton on to the fact you were planning on leaving. It was ever so nerve-wracking, and you were glad that it was nearly over.

Giving your backpack one last check, you let out a hum of satisfaction. Everything was there. Your camping gear, extra clothing, survival gear, a poncho, and various knick-knacks that you had purchased or had from your childhood, all present within your backpack. Taking a moment to mourn the fact you had to do this, you turn to your partner, Zenobia, with a question on your lips, only for her question to preempt yours.

"Are you sure about this Lux?" Your blade asks you as she runs through a kata, "I know your folks wouldn't approve of your choice, and you won't be able to come home after this."

You sigh from your bed, having just finished throwing on your traveling clothes. Did you really want this? Were the alternatives so bad that you weren't willing to even consider them? In all honesty, you had made your mind up long ago. Your resolve firmed, you turn to your partner, and give your answer, "Yeah, I am. I won't join Mor Ardain's army, and I won't fight against them either. So, the only solution is to strike out on my own. I thought you had agreed with me, Zenobia."

Your blade sighs, pausing briefly in her training and turning her full attention towards you. "I do, yeah. But I wanted to see if you had second thoughts before we left. It's good to see that you don't, Lux." She retorts, a satisfied smile on her face.

You return her smile happily. Even after only knowing Zenobia for about a week, she's become an invaluable person in your life, something that should have surprised you, but doesn't, after having done the research on drivers and blades. Drivers and their blades almost always shared a good relationship, after all, though no one was sure why. Perhaps it had to do with how well your personality and Zenobia's meshed?

You shake your head, clearing your thoughts. Regardless of that, it was time to leave. Inching the door leading into your room open little by little, you peek out, your sensitive ears twitching from their place atop your head, listening to see if your parents had, in fact, gone to sleep. Judging by the heavy snoring from your father and mother's room, they had indeed begun to sleep, and, with a sigh of relief, you open the door fully, carefully making your way down the stairs into the kitchen. It was clear. Your pets were thankfully sleeping, and wouldn't be making noise tonight.

You can just barely hear Zenobia behind you, the warrior maiden's steps light as a feather, though still ever so slightly audible, if only due to your enhanced sense, which you were straining to their absolute maximum.

"We're clear, Zenobia." You whisper as she joins you downstairs, your blade taking her place at your side, "do you have anything you want to grab before we leave?"

She shakes her head in a negative, though she doesn't vocally respond, instead gesturing toward the exit of your home. Nodding in understanding, you make your way there, slowly creeping forward as not to risk waking your parents. Zenobia leads, and, upon arriving at the door, carefully pushes it open, so as not to set the squeaky hinges off, though it's still painfully loud, and extremely grating to your sensitive hearing. Neither of you pauses once it opens, immediately pushing it closed as gently and quickly as you can, and running through the residential district of Torigoth towards the western entrance, intent on heading downwards towards the town of Blakka, the only other major port in Gormott with the original capitol of White Chair utterly destroyed during the Gormott-Mor Ardain War.

But now isn't the time to be remembering your history lessons. As you swiftly pass through the market district of Torigoth you notice something extremely odd. It's way too busy, especially since it's midnight, last you checked. There must be an event going on, you realize as you slow down, skulking through the shadows. It would be better to avoid it, turning around and going out the eastern entrance, but, in the end, your curiosity gets the better of you, and you approach the market square.

Upon getting closer, you can quite clearly make out the recruitment drive that the local officers are holding, the core crystals laid out on the table making it quite obvious that they were searching for drivers.

"Fei!" The officer cries towards the surrounding crowd, "Who has the courage to heed the Empire's Call?"

The crowd mutters amongst themselves, giving you the opportunity to get started sneaking past, your curiosity gone, and your desire to get out of Torigoth becoming your priority once more.

"Your strong heart today will build a strong Mor Ardain tomorrow!"

You roll your eyes as you pass by the crowd, ignoring the propaganda that the officer was spewing before you freeze at his next words.

"Of course, you get more than a salary. Pension and benefits are included. Distinguish yourself, and you could even join the nobility!"

"That sounds like something I could get behind…" Zenobia mutters, thankfully keeping her voice down.

"I-" You start, before snapping your mouth shut. Was your resolve so easily shaken? Shaking your head fiercely, you continue onwards, only to freeze as you run headfirst into a guard.

"What are you doing skulking around in the dark, lass." He accuses, his arms crossed against his chest.

You whimper in response, Zenobia immediately freezing beside you, her hand briefly reaching for her weapon before she thinks better of it, and scowls at the guard, a light breeze swirling around her.

"Well, I'll be, are you a driver lass?" The guard asks, taking a look at Zenobia. "You are, aren't you."

"For the glory of the Ardainian Empire, and his Majesty, Emperor Niall!" The recruiting officers' shout interrupts. Both you and the guard turn and look at the officer at the recruiting table, before turning your attention back to each other.

"I- I was running away." You admit, attempting to keep the annoyance from your voice, "My parents and I don't agree on a lot of things, and… it wasn't fun at home."

The guard scowls, muttering a curse under his breath. "Well lass, I cannot in good conscience let you leave Torigoth, even if you are a driver. You're what, thirteen? Fourteen?"

You scowl. You hated how short and underdeveloped you were at times. "I'm sixteen, actually." you hiss, "And-"

"And nothing." The guard responds, "You ain't old enough to be wandering the wilds of Torigoth alone at night. Don't you know that there are monsters about?"

You grit your teeth in anger at his babying, "I'll be fine sir." You snarl, "Now, if you could let me leave-"

"Right, what's the commotion over here corporal?" A voice interrupts the officer who had been pitching at the recruitment drive walking over to you both.

Great, you muse, Now I'll never be able to get out.

"Sir! This young lady was running from home. I caught her skulking around in the dark, and assumed she was a thief. She's also a driver sir." The guard replies, saluting his superior officer.

"Right. Corporal, return to your post. I'll give this young lady a talk." The officer orders, before turning to you. The guard salutes once more, and leaves, presumably to resume his patrol.

"Lass." The officer begins, his voice kind, "Why is a young driver like you running from home?"

You grit your teeth, "None of your business, Sir."
The officer sighs, before reaching up and removing his helmet, letting you get a good look at his face, and ears. He's Gormotti too, you realize, looking at his ears, and someone who you're familiar with. "It is, Lux. Why are you running from your parents? From what I recall, they'd given you a good home." Markus, your uncle, asks a frown on his face.

You sigh, your guard finally dropping. "Mom and Dad want me to join the army. Grandma and Grandpa want me to… inconvenience Mor Ardain. I just wanna explore the world... " You reply, frustrated tears falling from your eyes as you admit it. "Why can't they just support me?"

Markus sighs, taking a look at Zenobia, who, up until now, has been politely silent, her arms crossed just above her bust. "And you, Zenobia? Do you agree with Lux?"

"Yes." Your blade replies, "Lux is my driver. So long as she's willing to find me strong opponents to fight, I'd do anything for her."

Markus sags, before turning back to you. "I assume you were headed to Blakka, to catch a ride somewhere else?"

You blush, nodding. That had been your plan, after all. But how did he-

"Lux…" Your uncle groans, "The path to Blakka is currently under the cloud sea. As you should be aware, young lady."

Your blush turns nuclear. How could you have forgotten? The tide had risen tonight, and the path you were going to take was inaccessible. Frustrated tears drip from your eyes, and you stubbornly wipe them away, painfully aware of how stupid you look.

Once more, your uncle sighs. "Look Lux, the way I see it, you have four options. Go home, and forget this happened. Deal with your parents and grandparents, then leave when you're of age. Option two, join Mor Ardain's military. I'll be able to get you into officer training pretty easily, especially since you're a driver. My brother wouldn't even think before signing you away. Third option. I give you enough money to catch a ride to either Mor Ardain or the Argentum Trade Guild, and you can figure things out from there. Or, option four, do what your grandparents want, and start stirring up trouble. Not that I approve of that choice, but you do have that option…"

You sniffle, wiping at your face with your sleeves. Your uncle had a point, and you were touched that he was willing to provide you with some money to get to Argentum or Mor Ardain, though you had originally wanted to go to Uraya. Less chance of your parents tracking you down there, due to the hostilities.

Regardless, your response here will change your life forever, and it's best to think through it carefully.

[] "I'll go home." You say, kicking a stone. You could always run away again later, though it'd probably be harder, and it'd take a while for your parents to lower their guard again. It'd probably take a year, to be honest, maybe two. (Easy)

[] "I guess I can sign up for the military." You mumble, Zenobia giving you a look that screams "Are you Sure?" You can't exactly blame her, though the temptation of being an officer and potentially earning glory is too great. Never mind the possibility of becoming Nobility. (Medium)

[] "Thank you so much, Uncle!" You say, giving your uncle a crushing hug. He smiles at you, patting your head in such a way that had you purring in contentment. Zenobia gives you a thumbs up as well. You're glad she approves, to be honest, and can't wait to get started on your adventures! (Hard)

[] "I'll go home then." You snarl, turning around, Zenobia in tow. In fact, you don't intend to go home. You're going straight to your grandparent's house, and finding out about this "resistance movement" they've been hinting about. (Insanity) No. Just no. You'd be insane to do this, and you're markedly not insane. Never mind the fact that you just dislike Grandma and Grandpa, to begin with, and haven't ever had an issue with Mor Ardain.

So, welcome to the quest I've been idly musing about since I picked up Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It's going to be a fun ride, regardless of what options you guys pick. I truly do hope that you enjoy this quest, and Your/Lux's adventures through the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Mother
She's supportive of you regardless of what you'd do but would really prefer that you join Mor Ardain's Army.
Father
Unlike your mother, your father is Mor Ardainian and practically demanded that you enlist. Your relationship with him is currently strained.
Grandmother
You don't see your grandparents a lot, since they disagree with your parents on a lot of things. But your grandmother wants you to strike against Mor Ardain, you know that much.
Grandfather
You've seen your grandfather recently, as he was visiting when you awoke Zenobia. He's rather angry with your parents right now and is angry at you for daring to not think about striking against Mor Ardain. He's rather dismissive of your desire to explore the world, thinking it nothing but a childish dream.
Markus
Your uncle, who's a Captain in Mor Ardain's army. He's always been your best friend, being only ten years older than you. Just as he's demonstrated just now, he's quite willing to stick his neck out for you, and you definitely will need to return the favor at some point. You know that he's rather fond of that restaurant in Mor Ardainn...
Zenobia
Your very best friend, your blade, and greatest supporter. Zenobia couldn't live without you, quite literally, and you're starting to think the same of her. She just... gets you. She understands your desires and wants, shares them, but isn't an exact clone of you. She has her own dreams and wishes and quite clearly is capable of disagreeing with you. You probably should get to know her better, and increase her trust in you.

Lux
A young girl. The center of the story, and the character that the questors control the actions of. A happy lass of Gormotti Heritage, signified by the pair of cat ears on her head. She's a kind, generally happy person, who has lived a life in relative comfort and seeks an adventure. Much like a certain scavenger, she wants everyone to be able to live peacefully and stare yearnfully towards the World Tree. She's currently 16 years old, knows the basics of cooking and fighting, but not much more than that. She dislikes her grandparents a lot, seems to dislike her parents, and really likes her uncle right now.
Zenobia
Your first blade. A woman who seeks strong opponents to fight, but shares your desire for peace, ironically. She stands by your side, supporting you in your endeavors. You're also constantly embarrassed by her choice of attire (or the lack of it). You have no idea how old she is, but in this incarnation, she's currently a few days weeks, though mentally roughly 20ish. You have no idea what her favorite stuff is, and while she feels like an old friend, you're constantly reminded of stuff you don't know about her.

Sorry MC-chan, the lure of Not Forgetting About Him is too great.

A Xenoblade quest you say? Sign me up.

Hmm, looking through the options I think all of them look pretty interesting. Each presents a viable storyline for us to work with that will change the flavour of the quest itself. I feel like this vote shouldn't just be about the difficulty, but about what kind of driver we want our character to be.

In my opinion, both the second and third options are about the same interest wise and while the first does make us wait longer it provides some opportunities for character interaction and growth, though it is not the one I am most interested in.

Option two would give us the best combat training right off the bat and we would have experienced teachers to help us along, alternatively the fourth option presents the opportunity to meet a lot of new interesting people. Besides, we can always join a merc group or something, though we'd need to be careful of bandits and mercs with less than pure intentions.

By the way @Miho Chan, how far away are we from Canon? Just out of curiosity.

It's too early to give up, and I don't want to disappoint Zenobia.

While joining the army has potential, at this point the most interesting things going on with them are posturing against Uraya and occassionally having core crystal shipments shipments massacred hijacked by Torna. While I'm sure the author can come with stuff to do, I feel striking out on our own will be more interesting.

Also, OOF on those grandparents. There's pretty much no good outcome there.

Wouldn't mind the military option but the temptation to explore is too strong.

I suggest we head to Mor Ardain, keep our head down, and go join the Garfont Mercenaries. Training, moneymaking opportunities, and a direct chance to get an in with Rex and Co.

I'll give you guys another day to vote, but so far, it looks like Bouken/Adventure is winning. I also would really like to see discussion, but I know I can't force that ^^'

? I would imagine Mor Ardain is the last place we should go to get a ride to Garfont, considering it's in Uraya.

Well, I can at least elaborate a bit on what I said earlier.

Staying home - well, maybe if this quest was set later, and especially if it was set earlier, but not now. Nia's definitely on the run, probably fled Gormott, and possibly in Torna; so staying in order to bump into her is unreliable. Any shenanigans related to the Ardanian conquest of Gormott have largely already occured, and Rex and Co won't show up for another year. Like we could get up to stuff out in the wilderness of Gormott, but aside those orphans who's village might not even be burned down yet and all the housing Mor Ardain must be building to prepare for doomsday, I'm drawing a blank on anything specific.

I already covered two.

For four, say we were on good terms with our grandparents, if we magically managed to free Gormott with no bloodshed that wouldn't really be a good thing. It'd force Mor Ardain into the same position they were 50/10 years ago, so it'd likely just spark another war.

Three offers the chance to go pretty much anywhere. We could end up back on Gormott as muscle to protect salvagers, we could join the Garfont mercenaries, we could get involved with the black market supplying Tantal, we could even end up indirectly working for Torna via Bana having us clear out that abandoned factory on Mor Ardain for their use. Anything's possible.

Basically, since one and three don't have any specifics leads on what we'll end up doing, I'm going for three because it has the widest opportunity.

Yeah, my general thoughts on the options went something like this:

Stay home - Given we're 1-2 years before canon and Lux is saying it might take a year or two to find another opportunity to get out, it sounds very much like "Wait for canon to come to Torigoth." Possibly right down to Rex walking into town. That has some appeal but personally I'd rather try and explore from a different vantage point. If we intersect with canon I think it'd be more interesting to come at it from another angle, whatever it may be.

Join Mor Ardain - This could go a number of different ways, though personally I'd be angling for some kind of meteoric rise through the ranks so we can hang out with Morag or something. More realistically, it sounds like we'd be putting ourselves on a crash course for family issues because there's almost no way we're told our grandparents are involved in a resistance movement and we don't end up investigating/confronting/encountering it as a Mor Ardain soldier. I imagine if we wanted to join the resistance movement this might actually be the choice to take for the purposes of becoming a mole for them... if they accept that.

Head to Argentum/Mor Ardain - This is the most open by a long shot. We can do anything! Join a guild, explore, stumble into the myriad conspiracies in Alrest! It also appears to be the most in line with what Lux and Zenobia actually want. I don't have any hard direction in mind for picking this - I do kind of have the image of eventually just becoming a lone/small group wanderer/explorer but I'm not bound to it, I just want to see what's out there and just wing it for a bit, see what looks intriguing.

So, as a update:
I haven't forgotten about this. My muse just happens to be fighting me with every word I write right now, and it's been a struggle to get updates out. I'm attempting to do so, but it'll take some times. As I write this post, I'm forcing out words, so hopefully, by the end of next week, I'll have an update for this and "Fate/Heaven's Order"

Boarding the Ship
[] "Thank you so much, Uncle!" You say, giving your uncle a crushing hug. He smiles at you, patting your head in such a way that had you purring in contentment. Zenobia gives you a thumbs up as well. You're glad she approves, to be honest, and can't wait to get started on your adventures! (Hard)

"Thank you so much, Uncle!" You all but shout, throwing your arms around him in a crushing hug. He sighs, though he pats your head, rubbing your ears in the way he always did. As you withdraw from the hug, you just barely notice Zenobia shooting you a thumbs up. Of course, the instant you see it, you return it, the smile on your face utterly unassailable.

"Alright Lux," He says, a small smile on his face, "I need to get back to recruiting, but if you want to wait with me until the morning, I'll make sure you get on a ship to either Argentum or Mor Ardain." With that, Markus begins walking towards the recruiting booth, you and Zenobia trailing after him, following him to the booth near the center of the town square.

"I'm back, Lieutenant Wolfe, apologies. A family matter came up." Markus remarks as he enters the booth, waving you inwards. "My niece is having… issues at home."

The other officer, a Gormotti woman, grunts in acknowledgment. "I take it that Lux will be staying with us for now then, Captain Markus?"

"Aye." He replies, "Though I'll be sending her off in the morning. She's a driver, and one not interested in joining the Imperial Army. Since it was an heirloom core crystal she resonated with, and not one of ours, she's not obliged to join, either."

The Lieutenant shrugs, "Fair enough. I take it you'll need to escort her to the docs?"

Markus nods, "Yeah, her parents are… insistent that she join the Imperial Army. To the point of absurdity."

Wolfe grunts, but doesn't say anything further, simply leaning against a stack of crates, seemingly ignoring the world, though any Gormotti worth their salt could tell you she was listening to the world around her intently, her ears twitching with each new sound.

Meanwhile, you're slowly dozing off, the surge of adrenaline and the caffeine you had drunk earlier in preparation for your getaway slowly leaving your system. Noticing you drifting off, Zenobia sighs, sitting down beside you, and putting your head on her lap.

"Sleep, Lux." She says, smiling softly, "We're fine now. Your uncle promised, and, from what you've told me, Markus keeps his promises, come hell or high water.

"Mhm…" You reply, marveling at how soft your blade's lap was, slowly drifting off to the land of dreams…

Your awakening is abrupt, but not unpleasant, your uncle shaking you and Zenobia awake, smiling down on you.

"Up and at em Lux, Zenobia. You've slept long enough for now, and if we wait any longer, your folks will wake up. I've already booked a ship for you, one that's headed to both Argentum and Mor Ardian, so all you need to do is decide which one to get off at."

Blinking away the sleep from your eyes, you nod, yawning as you get up off Zenobia's lap. "Okay Uncle. Thank you for everything. I'll see you sometime, I guess?"

"More than likely not in a while, Lux, unless you come back to Torigoth. I'm stationed here for the foreseeable future, after all." Markus replies, smiling as he hands you a pair of tickets. "Now, you should head towards the docks. Your ship leaves in about thirty minutes, and boarding should start in roughly five. You wouldn't want to be late, would you?"

Looking wide-eyed at your uncle, you blurt out a quick thank you once again, before leaping to your feet and running off towards the docks, Zenobia hot on your heels. The sights of Torigoth blur as you pass them, your intent solely on getting to the Civilian docks located right near the Military Harbor so as not to miss your ship. Thankfully, you arrive within five minutes, and, upon arriving, you're prompted to present your boarding pass. Thankfully, the tickets you had hastily stuffed into your pockets are what the people at the boarding ramp wanted, and you're directed to your cabin in short order, the attendant letting you know that you have tickets for a round trip, and can get off at any point.

Settling into your cabin, you flop down on the bed, laying all your equipment on one of the floor, Zenobia crashing onto the bed right beside you.

"Well Lux," She says, smiling, "We're home free." Pausing to give you a serious look, Zenobia's grin grows wider, "Where are we heading?"

[] "To the Argentum Trade Guild" (2 Week Travel Time)
[] "To Mor Ardain." (1 Week Travel Time)

Zenobia nods. "Makes sense. Well, we have a few days of travel before we have to do anything."

You nod. "Yeah. Let me go see what this ship offers Zenobia, I'll be back. Then I'm gonna sleep some more, and we can go do other stuff!"

"Alright, Lux. I'm gonna crash myself. I'm exhausted." Your blade replies, laying down on the bed and quite literally falling asleep on the spot.

With a fond smile, you leave the room, closing the door softly behind you, and heading towards the promenade of the ship, seeking out one of the many attendants.

It takes you a good while to find one, most of them having been busy assisting other guests, but once you do find one, they answer your question rather quickly.

There are several facilities on the ship.

There's a gym, where you can practice with Zenobia rather safely. There's a decent-sized pool where you can exercise, and there are several other facilities, such as a small library, kitchen, dining area, and various other things.

Needless to say, you won't be all too bored on your journey, which, according to the attendant, is likely going to take at least a week, due to the way the Cloud Sea is currently.

You, of course, head back to your cabin after this, and promptly crash, falling asleep right beside Zenobia, though you do make a list of things you want to do over the course of the next week or two before you do so.

[] Physically Focused. Train with Zenobia, Exercise, better your body.
[] Mentally Focused. Visit the Library, see what you can learn from the crew.
[] Balanced Approach. Do both of these, though to a lesser extent than what a focused approach could accomplish.
