Light the four lighthouses once extinguished by the ancient dragons and save the world from inevitable ruin. That was the promise that began this long winded journey, but for Felix, the conclusion wasn't saving the world, but rather the ones he found along the way. After all, when humanity is in short supply, a godling to be needs to cling to it with all they have.

Preamble

BlackHadou

Bunny-Sensei
So, this is a somewhat unusual situation. Originally, this story was posted on QQ (Which for those of you who are interested in reading it in its full original context, can be found here) for a variety of reasons. However, several things, such as the story panning in a direction that is in many ways a very different direction to what it was originally foreseen as going, as well as a generally small reader base, has led to the decision to port it here, which given how things turned out, is probably where I should have started anyway. After all, this quest lacks the majority of the things one would go to QQ for. As such, this is a quest with a not insignificant number of choices already made (after all, it is 38 updates of story content and some 120k words in), which will be steadily cross posted over to here with the minor corrections necessary to keep the flow better (yes, I am terrible with dates as my readers have probably previously been able to attest).

Fundamentally, that means voting in this quest won't actually open up for some time, however, that is only one of two systems that are present within it. While voting is a means of actually making your will known, this quest is also probably the most in depth use of the affectionately named 'birb' system from one of my Fate quests, namely that several characters within it have limited ability to break the fourth wall and answer questions from the audience. This was mostly envisioned as a means of introducing people to the worlds involved, as Golden Sun and Breath of Fire were (and probably still are) relatively obscure franchises, but on occasion evolved into a sort of meta detail system that allowed players to influence things beyond merely voting by giving other characters who were more suited to act on information the information they needed. In this quest, the system primarily involved the Djinni, little spirits that each adept within the story had at least one to call their own. Some of you will recognise it as being similar to the method of talking to Shooter used in SpectralWaltz's quest. From my perspective, this system is basically available at any time, which means even prior to voting opening, questions are a valid means of getting exposition. Given the character sheet, due to lack of backups and redundancy, really can't be posted until the end of the updates for reasons of spoilers, it's also the best way to get such information for the time being.

Given I was down to basically four voters, far as I'm concerned, upping and moving the quest honestly had nothing to lose. So, frankly, I hope you will enjoy it. By and large, this is the longest running quest I've written, and it is the only thing I currently write which has a habit and a reputation in my friend circle for killing updates for other things so I can work on it.

The general gist of the quest is that you control Felix, a Brood (dragonling) who is on an adventure to save the world, having picked up a myriad of allies along the way. In order to save the world from the fate of erosion at the edge of the world, four lighthouses need to be lit with four elemental stars that could be found within the Vale, which unironically could be called the center of the world. As of update 38, Girl Teases Boy, Felix had obtained the stars along with a few inconvenient truths and less convenient injuries, and was making his way to the first of the elemental lighthouses, Mercury, which is aligned with Water. Since the setting is fundamentally one in which both Golden Sun and Breath of Fire were merged, knowledge of either should hopefully not be necessary to play.

My plan is to cross post 4-6 updates a day. Ideally, the entire quest should be cross-posted by New Years and voting opened up. This means that there will be about 10k worth of updates (plus whatever conversations with the Djinni occurred between, which occasionally got quite lengthy) each day. This will continue until this side has caught up, upon which, voting will open on this side. Given the voters for the most recent update are all in my direct friend circle, I am sure that they will forgive me for making them vote again.

Regardless, please enjoy the adventure. I hope it is as fun for you guys as it was for me writing it, as frankly this plot bunny has straight up temporarily murdered many of my other works.

      • Adept
You are able to use psynergy of your appropriate element.

        Dragon's Eye
You can see the unseen, the world beyond that has been forgotten. Faeries, monsters, even some people exist in the realm beyond sight.

Unfortunately, it is also extremely distinctive. Your right eye isn't human, to those who know what to look for.

        Immortal
Felix is immortal and will not die from aging effects. However, Immortals are not really meant to be injured. While his body can move even beyond certain circumstances that'd normally prevent it from moving at all, his healing factor is greatly reduced.

        Massive Lifestream
The spiritual energy possessed by Felix is truly immense. As a result, everyone he interacts with is almost inevitably swept up in his fate. Those with strong luck can resist its pull, although for a certain person, it doesn't matter how high the luck value is, they are swept up anyway.

        Open Mind
Normally, the mind will attempt to fight off intruders. Doing so requires huge amounts of energy, enough that even an Endless will need sleep and to eat. However, thanks to the secret techniques of Lama, Felix is able to host other minds within his own.

However, only one gets that privilege. As a side effect, rejecting other minds is a matter of course. Assuming Mold doesn't crush them.

        Magic
A budding talent that began developing due to Felix's journey into Infinity. The ability to cast magic has been gained. Since the Golden Sun is hidden, its effectiveness is low, though Felix's abilities increase greatly in dragon form.

        Rakshasa - Unique Skill
The invincible warrior foretold in the legends of the Brood. When you are defeated, you transform into a dragon and continue fighting with renewed vigor. However, if your dragon form is slain, then you are too. The reverse also applies, if you are defeated as a dragon, you return to your human form and can continue fighting, though if you are then slain in your human form, you are defeated for good.

        Absolution - Unique Skill
        ???

Special: You can borrow Sheba's Jupiter Gene if she is wearing the Mask of the Black Dragon.

        Ascension - Ability
Combine one Adult Gene or Child Gene with two Child Genes in order to become an adult dragon with maximized abilities.

          Mars - Child Gene
Become a Dragon Whelp that possesses fire magic, or add fire abilities to another dragon form.
Special: Karst possesses this gene, not you. You must borrow it to use it.

          Jupiter - Child Gene
Become a Dragon Whelp that possesses wind magic, or add wind abilities to another dragon form.
Special: Sheba possesses this gene, not you. You must borrow it to use it.

Become a Dragon Whelp that possesses water magic, or add water abilities to another dragon form.

          Sol - Child Gene
          ???
Special: This is the Wise One of the Dragons!?

          Psychic - Child Gene
Become a Dragon Whelp that possesses psychic powers, or add psychic abilities to another dragon form.

          Flow - Child Gene
Become a Dragon Whelp that possesses swimming abilities, or add swimming abilities to another dragon form.

          Astral - Child Gene
Become a Dragon Whelp that possesses no particular affinity, but when combined with another form, the capabilities skyrocket.

        • Force - Adult Gene
Become a humanoid dragon form that emphasizes combat ability. Magical abilities are reduced to nearly nil, however, magic spells are converted to physical attacks with elemental alignments.

          Eldritch - Adult Gene
Become a serpentine dragon form that emphasizes magical ability. Combat abilities are reduced to nearly nil, however, magic spells are maximized.

          Defender - Adult Gene
Become a shield dragon form that emphasizes defence. Combat and magical abilities are lowered, but all damage is reduced to a minimum.

          Sonic - Adult Gene
Become a shark dragon form that emphasizes speed. Combat and magical abilities are lowered, but increased speed means that certain obstacles can be defeated with ease.

          Miracle - Adult Gene
Become an adult dragon with increased size. The abilities of the form are maximised, but this gene cannot be used alone. Since it borrows traits from its Children and Esoteric Genes, it possesses advanced weaknesses.

          Gasp - Adult Gene
Become an adult dragon that emphasises curses and poison. When combined with other genes, those genes are maximised, however, the resulting combination will go berserk without a certain Divine Gene...

          Rhapsody - Adult Gene
Become an adult dragon that emphasises sound and harmony. When combined with other genes, the ability to inject an element into opponents is gained. If the enemy is stronger then you are, then this ability fails, however, against opposing dragons, injecting an element that the opponent does not possess themselves will prevent them from using certain techniques.

          Ramses - Adult Gene
Become an adult dragon with extreme earth abilities. Elemental affinity with Jupiter is reduced to nil while active.

          Kirin - Adult Gene
Become an adult dragon with extreme fire abilities. Elemental affinity with Mercury is reduced to nil while active.

          Atalanta - Adult Gene
Become an adult dragon with extreme wind abilities. Elemental affinity with Venus is reduced to nil while active.

          Nereid - Adult Gene
Become an adult dragon with extreme water abilities. Elemental affinity with Mars is reduced to nil while active.

        • None acquired yet. The stirring has ceased. Put Sheba or Jenna in mortal danger to awaken. You might not like what appears.

          Rakshasa - Esoteric Gene
Become a dragon with invincible combat prowess. However...

        • Yorae - Divine Gene
Ascend to godhood and unleash the end of the world.

          Progress Towards Radiance
You have one of five Elemental Genes. Collect them all to obtain the Radiance gene. The genes that contribute to this are the Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Sol genes.

          Progress Towards Trance
You have one of five Combat Genes. Collect them all to obtain the Trance gene. The genes that contribute to this are the Force, Eldritch, Shield, Sonic and Miracle genes.

        • Rakshasa
Rakshasa + Any Adult Gene + Any Child Gene
Transform into the Invincible Warrior. The effect is unknown.

          Doom Dragon
Gasp + Venus + Any Child Gene
Transform into an adult dragon with extreme 'darkness' abilities. However, all control and reason is lost, and you begin to attack others indiscriminately, though there is an exception. If you use the Trance Gene, control is regained, but the abilities decrease.

          Storm Song Dragon
          Rhapsody
          + Jupiter + Sheba's power
Transform into an adult dragon with overwhelming wind abilities. While in this form, Sheba's power as an adept is reduced to 0. This form has special abilities, but until the form is used, it is not apparent what they are. This form can be further enhanced by adding a certain Esoteric gene.

          Trygon
          Any Three Elemental Child Genes
Transform into an adult dragon that possesses a variety of elemental abilities. The abilities are maximised as a result of the transformation. However, since you don't have three personal elemental genes, the ability to transform is sealed.

          Autarch
          Yorae + Divinity
Ascend to godhood and obtain divine Earth element powers. However, the form immediately descends into primal fury and cannot be controlled. The Autarch learns every time it is brought forth, and attempts to limit its destruction will generally only work once.

      • King's Sword - Grandfather's Blade
A sword that has been passed down in Felix's family for generations. In the past, it was known as the King's Sword, the sword that dictated the 'King', though what king it dictated has been lost. It is known for the cleft within the center of its blade. In the pommel is an engraving.

'So Draw Me Forth And Set You Free.'

        Royal Dao
A sword with a broad blade and a slight curve. It's edge is made of mithral. It predates the known world and was used in the distant past by someone who possessed strength enough to destroy any other weapon. While its edge is not perfect, it is almost indestructible.

        Firerat Scarf
A scarf made of firerat silk. Firerats have notoriously hard to work with hides, and the rats themselves are extremely powerful Mars Adepts who are adept at warding off both heat and cold. So long as the scarf is worn, damage from Mars Psynergy is minimised and the effects of cold are warded off.

Mask of the White Dragon (Lost)
A ritual mask that symbolizes Ladon. The interior is laid with a dragons reverse scale, and is extremely rough on the face. It is intended only to be worn by one person, and is molded to the face. In this masks case, its intended wearer is Felix.

The mask changes the voice and hides all facial features, as it is intended to be used to transform the wearer into a stand-in for Ladon. It is also part of the Dragon Clans marriage ceremonies. Since the Proxians don't normally practice marriage, this aspect of the mask is only really relevant to Felix in his original group.

      • Jenna - Sister
        It's nice she's around.

        Isaac - Brother (in law)
He could reign his wife's cheekyness in sometime.

        Kraden - Godfather
It was nice seeing him again.

        Saturos - Mentor/Older Brother Figure/Caught in Fate
        Stay safe.

        Menardi - Ally
        ...

        Karst - Friends
        ...

        Agatio - Ally
So it was his plan, huh?

        Alex - Ally
He's strange. Very strange. I have to wonder if he isn't...

        Sheba - Partners
        Let's get moving.

        Ivan - Frenemies
There's no point pretending right now we're friends. We're currently exploiting each other.

        Ershin - Companion
Well, it's been helpful so far.

        Won-Qu - Servant
        His presence is nice.

        Nina - Old Lover
        ...

        Xian - Enemies
        Kill. Them. All.

      • Name: Sheba
        Age: 19
        Race: Anemos
        Element: Jupiter (Wind)
Djinni Companion: Simoom, Ether (on loan)

A girl who was found and rescued in Tolbi. She has a perchant for mass destruction and Jupiter Psynergy, though it doesn't seem that she can stop mind reading people. She hails from Lalivero, where she is revered as the Child of the Gods.

Since she has no true living family, it doesn't appear she's particularly attached to any one place. Sheba enjoys spicy food and keeps her reasons for traveling to herself, though she seems to believe traveling with Felix will lead her to the answers she seeks.

      • Physical Health: Fine
        Mental Health: Worried

        Strength: E -> D
        Agility: S
        Constitution: D -> C
        Psynergy: S
        Willpower: A
        Luck: B

        Hand-to-Hand: C -> B
        Staffmanship: C -> B
        Macenry: D
        Archery: D
        Precognition: C -> B
        Venus: F -> E
        Mars: C
        Mercury: B
        Jupiter: S
        Sol: D

      • Adept
You are able to use psynergy of your appropriate element.

        Anemos
The inheritance of the Anemos people. The Anemos are a race of humans who do not possess individuality as most see it. As a result, they are immune to certain forms of influence. In Sheba's case, individuality is a learned trait. As such, she can draw mental effects away from others, and ignore them if they are unleashed on her. As a side effect, her Mind Reading when she was first met was not restrained at all.

        Mind Reader
The ability to read others minds, inherent to Jupiter Adepts. In Sheba's case, she has no control and can't turn it off. The minds of anyone within about three kilometers of her are like an open book.

At least it makes ambushes unlikely. The odds of an ambush are rendered basically nil.

        Reveal
What is hidden about the world becomes visible. One of the secret arts of the Anemos, it is one that was thought lost to the ages. Given it is one of the Anemos arts, it is almost certainly required to enter the Jupiter Lighthouse.

Sheba's ability to use it is instinctual. She doesn't need to think about it.

        Prescience - Unique Skill
An ability foretold in legends as being associated with witches and other mystics. Dreams are prophetic, and in rare cases, even precognition in contexts such as battle is obtained. In Sheba's case, the skill is currently weak, but as she comes to be in danger, it strengthens to match the danger.

      • Mask of the Black Dragon
A cannabalised Mask of the White Dragon. It is made for a girls face and laid with a water skin to prevent harm from dragons blood. In its current form, it is suitable to be worn by several people, though it was made with Sheba's in mind.

The mask changes the voice and hides all facial features. Since it is inlaid with a Reverse Scale, while the mask is worn an Adept's Dragon Gene can be borrowed, though if done by force it might kill the victim.

Mask of the White Dragon (False)
A fake Mask of the White Dragon. It's pretty clearly made for a boys face. The materials appear to be scavenged from a sand dragon and a ruby dragon. It has no special properties. It would appear the mask has been finished. In the center of the forehead is a wind-aligned psynergy crystal. The back of the mask is lined with treated velvet. Far too much love and care went into this.

      • Name: Saturos
        Age: 33
        Race: Proxian
        Element: Mars (Fire)
        Djinni Companion: Temper, Tinder

A warrior from Prox hailed as a prodigal swordsman, master of psynergy and a guardian of the dragon clan. His knowledge of fighting is almost encyclopedic, and his skill cannot be denied in any sense of the word. He views himself as Felix's mentor in combat, and in some ways, has adopted an elder brother position to the dragonling.

Saturos, though he does not often speak of it, is the eldest of three siblings and the only warrior among them. Since Saturos did not follow the family traditions of hunting, he is not on good terms with his family. In the past, there appears to have been a flame with Menardi, though whether it has been smothered or just put on hold is a private matter for the two.

        Venus: C
        Mars: A -> S+
        Mercury: F
        Jupiter: D
        Sol: B

      • Adept
You are able to use psynergy of your appropriate element.

        Twin Psynergy
The possession of multiple Djinni. Since this is a trait that has occurred over time, the Djinni are able to facilitate using multiple different psynergy abilities simultaneously. In Saturos' case, he can cast two different psynergy abilities simultaneously.

        Fire Starter
An ability that is inherent to those from Prox. Fire ignites around their weapons and bodies in battle, enhancing both attack and defence at the cost of stamina. Ultimately, they fight hard and burn out like a shooting star.

        Blind-Fighter
An ability that represents excessive combat training. Even if sight has been deprived, there is no risk of not being able to fight enemies. Saturos can easily defeat opponents on sound alone.

        Evil Sealer
A series of techniques used by the Warrior Clan of Prox. Technically, they are a series of funeral rites that are intended for sending the dead to the next life. However, due to Saturos' extensive mastery, enemy spirits, poltergeists and other dead can easily be exorcised with purifying fire. However, this skill proved completely ineffective on Hex Monsters.

        Inferno Dervish - Unique Skill
The fighting technique and unique skill developed over many years by Saturos. It is actually evolved from a previous skill called Burning Kindling. As momentum builds and combat continues, the surrounding area erupts into a roaring inferno, as Saturos begins to burn the surrounding area and even his enemies as kindling to fuel his fighting strength. However, within the Mercury Lighthouse, this skill will seal.

Wrath of Bul Ryong - Unique Skill
A skill obtained due to allowing oneself to be drawn into the fate of an Endless by making use of the remaining emotions of a dragon of hate. Bul Ryong refers to the true name of Smog as an Endless, or at least, it would if Smog allowed himself to become one of the unchanging ones. In the case of Saturos, this power has been turned towards destroying demons. It is a left arm that can harm demons using the hatred of the dragon who lost all to their kind. However, since it is based in Saturos' left arm (and non-dominant arm), his abilities are lowered in exchange.

      • Twice-Hafted Sword
A unique style of sword used by Saturos. He claims it has no name, but the engraving at the base of the blade indicates it's name is 'Menardi'. Uniquely, the sword actually bears two handles attached to each other in order to provide additional leverage. The style of construction heralds the traditions of the Proxians, in which a dragon is considered a man when it faces a warrior in combat, and equally, a boy becomes a man by successfully piercing the hide of a dragon. The sword is clearly made to fight dragons. In the pommel, a lapis has been set. Perhaps it is noteworthy that it's pretty obvious that lapis is attached to a promise ring, but Saturos does not speak on the matter. There is a thin line in the blade where oil can be channeled to ignite the blade, but Saturos has long since stopped needing such a crutch.

        Mithril Armour
Armour made of mithral. Saturos wears it at almost all times, though occasionally he hides it under his clothes. It is lightweight and unusual strong, almost indestructible. While not known to be the most effective material for armour, mithral is infamous for the secrets of its construction being lost to the world, predating known society. As a result, the mithral armour inherited from father to son, master to student is one of the most valuable treasures that can be given.

        Elixir of Life
A set of three bottles containing water from Lemuria. They are known to heal most wounds and extend the life of those that consume them. However, they are also valuable enough that their theft started a war. Saturos appears to have all the remaining bottles in the parties possession on him in a strange black pouch. The pouch is made of stained adamant, one of the hardest materials ever discovered.

      • Name: Karst
        Age: 24
        Race: Proxian
        Element: Mars (Fire)
        Djinni Companion: Flash

An Adept and Warrior from Prox, specialising in using Psynergy of the Mars element. She is a member of the Guardians, an elite Prox group who serve as warriors and protectors to the revered Dragon Clan. It would appear she is fairly good friends with Felix, and has a tendency to cover for him when it comes to her sister.

Since she hails from Prox, her reason for adventuring is quite simple, yet at the same time, obvious. She wishes to prevent the end of the world and her home from the Rift opening at the edges of the world.

You are able to use psynergy of your appropriate element.

        Fire Starter
An ability that is inherent to those from Prox. Fire ignites around their weapons and bodies in battle, enhancing both attack and defence at the cost of stamina. Ultimately, they fight hard and burn out like a shooting star.

        ??? - Unique Skill
Karst's unique skill is not in play.

      • Frostcutter - Scythe
The scythe used by Karst. It is an enchanted scythe that made use of tempered steel found in the vicinity of the Mars Lighthouse in its construction. Each swing is said to be able to cleave through a sheet of ice, an interesting metric of the sharpness of a weapon that only Proxians employ.

      • Name: Ershin
        Age: Very Old
        Race: Endless
        Element: N/A

A set of animated armour that was found in Chek. Ershin claims it is older then recorded history, and seems to have extensive knowledge of the world before the fall of the Golden Sun. However, its tendency to laugh at the worst possible moment can be seen as off putting.

Once upon a time, Ershin was host to a goddess named Deis, however, that time has faded almost out of memory. Ershin is one of a few practitioners of magic left in the world, and as it turns out, even without the Golden Sun is exceptionally skilled at it.

      • Physical Health: Tinny
        Mental Health: Hehehehe

        Strength: S
        Agility: D
        Constitution: S
        Psynergy: N/A
        Willpower: S
        Luck: E

        Hand to hand: S
        Rocket Punch: S
        Venus: E
        Mars: E
        Mercury: E
        Jupiter: E
        Sol: E

      • Purifier
The special techniques and equipment used to purify a hex. In Ershin's case, it is built into it's body and cannot be removed. Ershin can also function as armour for another person, but that disables this ability.

        Magic - Unique Skill
Ershin possesses the ability to cast magic. However, since the Golden Sun is hidden, the ability to do so is very weak.

      • Purifier Armour
A specialised set of armour that resists hexes. In Ershin's case, it is also it's body. It also possesses strong fighting and defensive capabilities, capable or repelling a sword.

      • A great valley that separates Mount Aleph from the surrounding mountain ranges. While generally, everyone refers to the mountains in the region as the Aleph Range, the Aleph Divide separates Mount Aleph itself from the surrounding range. As a result, it is not possible to enter Mount Aleph or the Vale without crossing the Wanderlust Plains that inhabit the Divide.

Beyond even that, there is the issue of Mount Aleph, by and large, being impassable. Since the mountain is surrounded by energy from before the fall of the Golden Sun, it is prone to extreme weather conditions once one ascends past the normal height of the Vale. Birds tend to avoid the area for this reason.

      • A mountain village that serves as a rest-step on the Silk Road, between Xian and the Lamakan Desert. It is primarily a mining village that trades in large amounts of gold. It is known for the Great Hydros Statue that the village was founded around, which creates a natural spring that supports life.

Since it is a rest stop, it often has a large variety of goods. It is also known for its water capes, special capes designed to keep one cool and hydrated when crossing the Lamakan Desert along the Silk Road.

      • A city-state to the north of the Goma Range, north of the Aleph Divide and directly between Vault and the area that houses Imil. It is ruled by the McCoy family, who are regarded as being caring and well ruling.

Due to where Bilibin is located, it uses surprisingly study wood found from the nearby Kolima Forest. this wood can resist the elements to an unusual degree, though why is not quite known.

      • A village in the mountains to the north of Tolbi and Kalay. It is the old location of the village now known as the Vale.

It was the site of a Hex from the Charonade in the ancient past, and as a result, is uninhabitable. The Gasp Gene was found here.

      • A town that can be found in the far north of Angara, and generally accepted to be the northmost point on the continent. If one continues further north, one will find the glacier bridge to Prox, presuming it is the right month. It is home to the 'Mercury Clan', descendents of the original Lemurians who did not travel forth to the sea.

Since it is so far north, the snow never stops falling. Its proximity to the Mercury Lighthouse means that the local water tends to have healing properties. Since the Mercury Clan is charged with the defence of the Mercury Lighthouse, they are expected to not leave.

        Alex hails from here.

      • A port city on the north side of the Karagol Sea. Known as the great exporter, it has inland rivers that lead both to the Eastern and Western seas. As a result, it is the greatest port in Angara and the central port by which almost all supplies travel. It is also called the origin of the Silk Road, as most goods on the Silk Road either originate or end in Kalay.

Due to the disaster in the Sol Sanctum, it is no longer possible to travel north from Kalay, as a mountain range has erupted on its northern border. Approach is now only possible from the Lamakan Desert.

      • A village of lumberjacks that can be found on the edge of the Kolima Forest. It is really a small outpost that is used for the gathering and transport of lumber, and as a result, its structures are not designed to last.

      • A village to the northern edge of Central Angara, due north of Vault. It is named for the legendary Righteous Thief Lunpa, who founded the village and served as its first mayor.

In recent times, it has become a den of thieves and brigands. As a result, it would be preferable to bypass Lunpa on the way to Imil. At least, so thinks Saturos.

      • A great lighthouse that is clad in sapphire that can be found past Imil in the north of Angara. It is called Winter's Eye, due to being in the centre of a frozen glacier. It is said the Mercury Clan was sworn to protect the lighthouse, though the validity of this claim is disputed.

It is the first intended destination in Felix's quest. Due to the protections of the Lighthouse, approach from the sky is impossible. The only way to reach the aerie is through the lighthouse proper. It cannot be accessed without a Mercury Adept.

      • A great city that can be found against the western shores of the great Karagol Sea, inland of Angara. It can be accessed by the Bright Tolbi River, which leads west from the city to the Great Western Sea and provides an access point for ships from West to East. Tolbi serves as a natural port for all ships trying to cross from the Great Western Sea to the Great Eastern Sea, as it has the only natural river channel through Angara through the Karagol Sea.

Tolbi is the capital of a nation of the same name, which rules all the local towns, villages and even some cities. It was forged as a nation-state a bit over one hundred years ago by its first and only king, King Babi. Babi, it is believed, is immortal and suspected to be a member of the Dragon Clan, though it has never been confirmed either way. The Xian do not travel so far south of the Silk Road, and thus the issue has never been tested.

Tolbi is known for its high exports of fish, silk and merchandise to the rest of the world. While fish, food and other materials are made locally, the silk it exports is actually sourced from Xian in the north-east. Tolbi is also known for the Colloso, a great colosseum that hosts a grand tournament at the end of each Spring. Throughout the year, minor exhibition events are also held.

Tolbi has a sizeable army, and maintains order in the region by force. However, it is not known for an adept population.

      • A vale and associated town that can be found at the base of Mount Aleph in the middle of Angara. The Vale is known as the birthplace of Psynergy. It is said that from its soil, all the old clans met and found peace. The name Vale simultaneously refers to the Vale itself and the town.

The people of the Vale are known to live simply, without many of the luxuries or hardships of other towns. This is due to the fact that everyone born in the Vale, without fail, is an Adept, though it is also said that the communion spirit and lack of solid Adept bloodlines makes the Adepts of the Vale weaker then others, a claim that has yet to be proven or disproven. The Vale is also thought to be where the Dragon Clan died out, as it is said that their power was sealed with the Golden Sun many centuries ago, and those that remained surrendered their power and settled in the Vale.

Entry to the Vale is difficult, as finding your way within the Wanderlust Plains before it is impossible without possessing Psynergy oneself. As a result, the people of the Vale tend to be very insular.

The Vale is where Felix was born. The current generation has three known Brood members within it.

      • A town that can be found to the south of the Vale. It is considered the 'heart' of Angara, and the hub by which the North, South and West all connect. Since it is so close to the Vale, it is also affected whenever the defences of the Sol Sanctum are triggered.

While it is not officially part of the Silk Road, Vault serves as a waypoint and merchants stop where caravans exchange goods in order to facilitate travel. As such, Vault itself has a very transient population and consists mostly of inns and hostels.

      • A great plain that can be found bottlenecking the entrance to the Vale. It formerly was known as the Golden Plains, according to Ershin. To access the Vale, one must pass through the Wanderlust Plains, but doing so without Psynergy is difficult. Only those from the Vale are able to navigate it without issue.

It is said that it is where the Spirit of the Meadow, Ch'o Ryong, once resided. Her wishes remain bound to a great stone, at which a Dragon Gene may be found. It is also said to be where the Woren tribes once lived, though they have faded to memory.

While it is called a plain, it also extends to the Aleph Divide that surrounds the Vale and Mount Aleph. Navigating into the Vale is almost impossible without crossing the plains.

Ch'o Ryong and the Rhapsody Gene were found here.

      • A temple and associated town found to the far east of Angara. Xian is infamous amongst all areas of the world as the location by which the means to slay dragons was developed, and as a result, is often assumed to be the place where the Brood War started back in the waning days of the Golden Sun. A simple village known for producing high quality silk, Xian trades these silks down the silk road in exchange for other amenities such as food, which it produces surprisingly little of. However, it is an open secret that the true export of Xian is anti-dragon weaponry and techniques.

They say that when a Dragon Clan appears in the world, the hunters of Xian deploy to destroy that person. They haven't been seen in decades, but people are still confident that they will appear. It is the true terror of the Xian, for their Long Xian Kung Fu is specialised to slay dragons.

      • A temple, shrine and inner sanctum that can be found in Mount Aleph, behind the Vale. The only access point is through the Vale, though whether this is by design or not is anyone's guess. The shrine is surrounded by impassable mountains that resist even the strongest Venus Psynergy, and approach from the sky might as well be impossible.

The Sanctum is where the disaster of four years ago began, when Saturos and Menardi triggered a number of traps within the sanctum to ward off intruders. As a result, a great storm occured and a number of landslides occurred, one of which nearly killed Felix. It was after this event that Felix came to be in Prox.

Technically, the Yorae Shrine is within the innermost parts of Sol Sanctum. The Sanctum was built around the shrine long ago to house the Elemental Stars integral to relighting the four elemental lighthouses. The Yorae Shrine itself serves as an inner chamber beyond even the Sanctum.

Ershin states that the shrine is guarded by two spirits that are akin to dragons, but not the same species, though Ershin does not recall their names. Within this innermost shrine is the original summoning circle, a place where mediums could call to the beyond for aid. For some reason, the Yorae Dragon finds this to be a sacred place.

      • A river-based village that can be found in the far north-east of Gondowan. It is south-east of Tolbi, through the Suhalla Desert. It is known for its extremely fertile riverbank that allows it to survive despite the remote location, and the vast number of ruins from an ancient civilization within the local area.

There isn't anything noteworthy in the area outside of some notable myths relating to those who traveled past the aurora of the sky. However, about twenty years ago, a girl was said to have fallen from heaven in the local area and is revered as a goddess. Since it has been years and nothing appeared to come of this story from the other side of the desert, it has, for the most part, faded back into irrelevance.

Since Lalivero is the largest settlement within the Suhalla region, it can be said to be a powerhouse, however, the deadly desert separating it from the rest of the region means that most find it not worth the effort of projecting power to.

So what is Babi looking for?

      • A great lighthouse clad in gold that can be found to the south of Lalivero. Also known as Sailor's Overlook, it is used as a major landmark for sailors returning home along the Suhalla River. It is said that Sailor's Overlook is impossible to access, for it was used by great 'airships' of old as a docking location.

It is said that the power of Venus was sealed here, but the local superstitions have long since overridden the truth of the matter. This is intended to be the third location of Felix's quest.

      • A snow covered village that shares its name with the Far Northern Nation. Like everything to do with Prox, generally speaking, they are not listed on any maps due to inaccessibility, though it is possible to cross towards Prox from Imil over a frozen land bridge between mid-Autumn and late-Spring.

The Proxians do not generally live in cities. As a result, Prox is the only known settlement in the far north. It is a small collection of huts that are used as a central base. Really, it's only purpose is to act as a port for the small Proxian navy and as a moot for elder meetings. Otherwise, it is not really used by the Proxian people and only ever has a skeleton crew to hand.

Felix's parents and Isaac's father, Kyle, all reside here, working as blacksmiths and tailors for the Proxians.

      • A great lighthouse clad in red that can be found to the far north of Prox. It currently overlooks the Great Rift that will herald the end of the world. It cannot be accessed without a Mars Adept.

It is the planned final location of Felix' quest.

      • The realm beyond the world, between life and death, mortality and immortality. It is known to the dragons as the shadowlands of the Gods. Felix was briefly brought here after using the Autarch so that his soul could recover.

It is linked to the world of Weyard by the Elemental Lighthouses, and the great demons are sealed where Infinity and the Lighthouses intersect. Within Infinity, it is said the Infinite Dragon dwells.

Beginnings
The air was crisp. Cold. It smelled like there would be a blizzard on the wind at any moment. Really, the perfect time to be leaving the hell known as Prox.

"You have your scarf?" I stopped briefly at father's words. The man looked old and haggard. Living in Prox did not agree with him like it did me. Sometimes, I wish I'd taken after him a bit more, but perhaps if I had, living in Prox these last three years would have been more difficult.

"I do. My cloak too."

Prox was a town hidden within the frozen wastes of north Weyard. For the Proxians, it was the only source of civilisation, the only town in the tundra. The rest of the Mars Adept tribes lived as nomads within the wastes. The idea of city living was relatively foreign to these people.

The difference in culture was almost astronomical. Perceiving it, let alone understanding it, was a task left to more scholarly then me.

We had only lived here for a few years. Our former home, the Vale, had suffered a great storm, and I'd been swept away in it, along with my parents. The Proxians had brought us here, for the sole purpose of assisting them light the Golden Sun.

Such a strange goal, yet I found myself aligned to it without hesitation. The Rift was approaching and there was nothing else that might stop it. Unfortunately, there was no longer any time to try and be diplomatic about it. A more forceful hand was needed at this point.

"Loosen up. You're nervous." I blinked as my fathers hands rubbed my shoulders. He wasn't wrong. This quest would either save or damn the world. If we failed at any point, well, there probably wouldn't be a Prox at all in a year or two.

"I wish you or mom could come."

"I can't travel, you know that." My father gave me a sad smile at that. "And another Mars Adept won't help your cause. You can do it, Felix. I have faith in you."

"It just seems to be too much." I admitted. "No one is going to understand."

"The time for understanding already passed. You know it. I know it. The Elder knows it." I nodded absently, as my father took the sword that had been on our hearth for years and handed it to me. "For luck. I doubt its sharper then one of Saturos' spare blades, but-"

"Then I'll sharpen it." I answered dryly. "I know how." It meant a lot. The sword had been my grandfathers. My father had been wearing it out of habit during that storm years ago, and it had followed us here. The only real memento of our time in the Vale. "I'm sorry this was so sudden, but-"

"No. The stars aligned. I can explain it to your mother." I nodded again. My father understood. I'm not sure my mother would. Regardless, there wasn't time to delay. He was right, the star of the dragon in the sky had begun to shine. It was time to move on.

Either we saved the world or we got the first row seats to the end of the world. That was one hell of a reward.

I hefted my pack, glancing back to my father. He looked sad. I felt sad. This all seemed to be entirely too soon.

"I guess this is it."

"It is. Take care, Felix."

"You too. I'll leave a letter for Jenna for you."

"Thank you."

Jenna. That was a name I'd spent years trying not to think about. My sister hadn't been here with us. It had been difficult to deal with her not being there. She had been like a second shadow when I was younger. Now, though…

I let out a sigh. It was time to get going. My breath came out as a hot steam of mist. That didn't bode well for the weather.

Outside was as dark and cold as I expected. Prox was at the top of Weyard. In the winter, days were short, very short. Apparently, in the far north, the winters never saw sunlight. Given today, it was easy to believe such things. Saturos was already waiting for me in the streets, his fur cloak wrapped around him tight. Even the master of Mars needed to robe up in this weather.

"You're ready?"

"Yes." It was a simple exchange, but my teacher of swordsmanship didn't really need to say anything else. There was no need to mince words about our task. We knew what to do.

We had to travel to the Vale, seize the Elemental Stars, and light the Lighthouses of each Element. Our order had been planned with some precision. After all, the Mercury Lighthouse was most dangerous to our party of mostly Mars Adepts and thus would be our first target. The Mars Lighthouse, to the north of Prox and near the edge of the rift, by necessity had to come last.

If we tried to light it before the very end, well, we'd never be able to make it to the other lighthouses in time. This was the sort of adventure where one assumed everything would go wrong.

Saturos was a pale blue skinned man. The Proxians were proud of their supposed descent from the dragons, and wore those faint reptilian characteristics with pride. It was surreal in a few ways, but in others…

I tore my thoughts away from that, before I lit a fire in my gullet.

"Menardi has readied the orb. We'll be travelling by boat." Saturos noted. "Which is better then feared."

"How long will the orb last?" I asked. The orb, or rather, the Black Orb as the Elder called it, was an ancient power source used to power the old Lemurian boats. They were amplified by psynergy, but the boat and its power source were so old that it was feared they had simply run out.

"We don't know. Just to be safe, we'll be making landfall south and travelling on foot. We save the ship for reaching the Jupiter Lighthouse." Saturos answered. "It'll increase our travel time for the first leg to and from the Vale, but the ships speed should eliminate most of our travel time for the second leg."

There was no mention of how we would return home. In the worst case scenario, we might have to cross half the world on foot. Unfortunately, there was no other option. We had to go to the Vale first. The rest of this quest was doomed if we didn't cross that hurdle.

That was also why this adventure would have no second chance and why the Mars Lighthouse had to be lit last. In a better world, we would start there and take advantage of its strength, but if we came back, we'd never make it to the Jupiter Lighthouse before the world ended and the Rift devoured us all. It was poignant, to have such a brutal time limit. Once the rift reached the Mars Lighthouse, there was no coming back.

"How small are we travelling?"

"You, me, Menardi, Agatio and Karst." Saturos answered. "We'll pick up Alex on the way. He said he'll meet us in Vault."

"And the missing elements?"

"We'll have to secure an Adept on the way. We can't wait." Saturos pursed his lips, before sighing. "This'd be a lot easier if we could convince the Vale, but…"

"There's no guarantee we can." I admitted. "While it'd be nice to have a few Vale Adepts, we can't rely on it. Even trying to convince them would make stealing the stars so much harder."

"We will have to make that decision when we get there." Saturos was strong, probably the strongest person I knew, but even he couldn't fight an entire village of Adepts. It was a little humbling to see him worried.

Our steps were soft, the air filled only with the crunch of our boots in the snow. As we reached the edge of town, Menardi, a pink skinned Proxian, just waved at us. Her left arm cradled a huge black orb. Just looking at it made me nervous.

"Everyone is ready?" She asked. Saturos nodded.

"Agatio and Karst went ahead. They'll have the ship prepared. I take it you tried to recharge the orb?"

"We gave it a shot." Menardi admitted. "But at best we didn't manage to do anything. At worst, we might have lowered the charge. We'll have to play it careful."

"Well, it is what it is." Saturos nodded. "Let's get moving. The longer we take, the longer before we come home."

I could agree with that sentiment…

The leader of this group is… (If Felix is not chosen, the leader will choose your destination. The canon leader was Menardi)
[X] Saturos, the strongest warrior of Prox.
[ ] Menardi, the Mars Witch and Psynergy master.
[ ] Felix, the Brood child.
-[ ] Moor at Tolbi. It is closer to the Vale and allows relatively easy access to both the Venus and Mercury Lighthouses. However, you will have to return from the Venus Lighthouse after lighting it, which is half a continent away.
-[ ] Moor at the Idejima Cliffs. It is very close to the Venus Lighthouse and allows for a quick getaway. However, you will have to cross the Suhalla desert to access Tolbi and the rest of the continent twice.

Your element is… (Jenna's element is always opposite Felix)
[ ] Mars (Fire)
[X] Venus (Earth)
You will gain an appropriate Djinni of your element as a companion.

Your first Gene is…

[ ] Elemental (Unleash elemental dragon powers. You will gain three different element Genes, not including your weak element)
[X] Force (Unleash dragon powers suited for direct combat)
[ ] Eldritch (Unleash dragon powers suited for magical combat and mass destruction)

To Tolbi
I hate the sea.

That was the first thing I learned about travelling on Menardi's ship. It might be durable, it might be fast, it might be the saviour of our little journey, but I hated the rocking and the salt in the air. It was overwhelming to the point of infuriating.

I wanted to hurl my lunch over the side of the rail.

"Hey, hey, no need to get too green." I just groaned at the sound of Mold, the little Venus Djinni bouncing on my back to ease the desire to hurl.

"I'm fine."

"Ya don't look it." He meant well, but he was also a little annoying.

The sea remained dark no matter how far south we sailed. It was days before the sky started to lighten more then an hour or two a day. I spent most of my time on the deck, trying not to vomit. Going beneath deck didn't help, no matter how much I wished it would. The motion was just too much.

"If I'd known you'd struggle with this so much, I'd have reconsidered." Agatio's gruff voice made me dislike him more. The man could be snide every so often. He was confident in his strength, as one of Saturos' chief students. It was that very status that got him on this expedition, considering the nightmare that had been the last invasion of the Vale. "Perhaps the vaunted strength of the Dragon Clan isn't worth much at all."

I didn't rise to that bait either.

The Dragon Clan was his peoples legends, not mine. Even if the legends sometimes proved very real. My presence on this expedition under anything except coercion was owed to that very fact. They said the Dragon Clan was the very reason the seal on Alchemy and the Fall of the Golden Sun back in the day was even necessary.

I wonder if that is really true.

Agatio was a pale skinned man, more green then Saturos' blue. He was huge, easily the tallest of all of us, yet behind that muscle was a cunning mind. If I had to guess at there being a traitor in our group, he'd definitely be my first pick. He never seemed to be content with his lot, regardless.

"And the broodling remains silent. Such vaunted strength, wasted on wretch over the side of a boat."

"Agatio, don't you have rigging to fix?" I finally responded, just rolling my eyes.

"Don't you have-"

"I already reset the fish pots and redrew the nets." Being a Venus Adept had its advantages. I didn't need to be able to physically touch something to move it. It was one of the few mercies afforded to me in the hell that was this boat ride.

Why couldn't we just fly instead? Why couldn't I have been afforded the genes of a large dragon?

Right. Because Prox was at the roof of the world.

I hate this boat.

We had been at sea for about a week when Saturos finally called us into the captains cabin. He was, after all, our leader, for a given value of leader. Given Menardi drove the boat, I had suspicions on who was actually taking the lead here. It was the first time I'd seen Karst in days. She looked like she agreed with the ocean about as well as I did.

"I'd say as you know, but since we departed so fast, you probably don't know our itinerary." Saturos started, offering Karst a piece of bread wordlessly. She took it without a thank you, but she looked grateful for it. "I've spent the last few days doing the numbers and watching the charge on our Black Orb."

"And the conclusion?" I asked. Saturos tapped a page on his desk, full of what looked like numbers and equations. It was easy to forget the warrior was also a scholar.

"We won't make it." He answered. "Even if Menardi reduces her use of the orb to the minimum and we ride the currents, we only have enough energy in the orb to make one round trip, if that. If we have to sail around to the other side of Angara and Gondowin to Indra, we'll never make it back to Prox on boat. I'm not sure we'll even make it to the Jupiter Lighthouse."

"So we basically can make it to Atteka and back." Karst spoke up hoarsely. "Then what is the plan? Do we travel over land?"

"We have no choice. We will have to." Menardi confirmed. "I'm already stretching the orb as much as I can. It's draining faster then we thought it would. Unless you happen to know where Lemuria is, we can't exactly recharge it."

The barb was a reminder of how few resources we actually had. There were ways to fix our equipment, but we did not have access to them. I bit my lip.

"Could we get a new ship at… uh… Atteka or Angara and sail around?"

"Too long." Agatio's voice was gruff, but Saturos just nodded his agreement.

"I considered it, but using our built sloops for comparison tells me that we will run out of time at that point. We only have a bit over a year." Saturos answered. "I don't see how to make a full sail around the continents work, so I've done the hard math. We'll be mooring in Tolbi. There's a inland sea we can easily access from the Bright Tolbi River. From there, we use Tolbi's docks to land and we continue on foot."

"No beasts to ride?" Agatio asked. Saturos shook his head.

"Even if one would let Felix ride them, which they won't, only one of us actually knows how to ride a horse." He answered softly. "The ordering is important at this point too. We'll consider when we get there, but I think our best step after the Vale is actually to go to Imil first and light the Mercury Lighthouse."

"We disagree on this point." Menardi spoke up. "I think we should light it after we have lit Venus and Jupiter. We can use the land bridge and the Kalira Range to cut straight to the Mars Lighthouse from there."

"Too dangerous." I was surprised that both Saturos and I said the same thing at the same time. I cleared my throat. "The Mercury Lighthouse cripples our fighting strength. Given we already have Alex, assuming he's in Vault like he says he is, we should cut off the weak link as quickly as possible. If we do it fast, we solve that problem before any pursuers can muster the strength to do anything about it."

"My thought exactly." Saturos muttered.

"Maybe, but if we wait until after we have lit the Venus Lighthouse, we can take advantage of the Gift of Venus to offset the Mercury Lighthouse's curse." Menardi shot back. Agatio just huffed.

"Mercury is where anyone trying to stop us will cut us off." He stated. "We should build our strength first. Why not split our forces? Karst and I return to Prox with the Mars Star, while you light Venus. We can then use our full strength at Imil."

"If we split up, we will be crushed." Karst muttered. "We only have strength in our numbers. Adepts are rare, but if we split up, that we are Adepts will no longer matter."

"We need Felix to get into Venus." Saturos muttered. "Let's not mince words, in a fight he's also our greatest asset against enemy Adepts. If we split up, we risk disaster."

"If we stay together, we risk worse disaster!" Agatio declared. I just stayed silent, as Mold cowered a little in my cape.

"And if our enemy correctly deduces the weak link, falls upon you and takes the Mars Star?" Saturos asked sharply. "We fail right there. We will never reclaim the star in time. At that point, I might as well just write our obituary now." The warrior-scholar's eyes were narrow, and Agatio suddenly seemed extremely small in the room. The passion he possessed seemed almost extinguished in the face of Saturos' shear presence.

It was easy to forget that Saturos was a warrior with almost no peer. As much as he claimed I was our trump card, I wasn't sure I believed him.

"You have another motive for Tolbi." I muttered. "What is there you are interested in?"

"Beyond amazing oysters?" Saturos went straight from cold to joking in a second. "Something interesting Alex passed along. It's leader, Babi, is supposedly immortal, but he's been aging very fast the last few years. Apparently, he kidnapped a girl from some village in the middle of nowhere to make a lighthouse."

"I don't see why this is important." Karst muttered. I pursed my lips.

"You suspect a motive?"

"People don't radically change like that for no reason. I think impostor, personally." Saturos admitted. "However, apparently last years Collosso was somewhat interesting. Apparently Adepts are being drawn to Tolbi."

"... Adepts draw other Adepts." Menardi muttered under her breath. "Why didn't you just say so?"

"Because I like being right, not wrong. However, given we have no choice but to land in Tolbi, I might as well just say it now." Saturos answered. "I suspect the girl he's kidnapped is an Adept, and probably a powerful one."

"Any idea of an element?" Karst asked. Saturos shook his head.

"Given the direction? I'd have assumed Venus, but that isn't important." Saturos answered. "The important part is that Adepts are being drawn to Tolbi. I suspect we are being drawn there too."

"Then the orb running dry faster isn't a coincidence?" Agatio grumbled.

"Probably not. Fate changes to draw Adepts together. That's the old saying." Menardi mused. "Then you think we could get our Jupiter Adept in Tolbi?"

"Jupiter Adepts are very rare, even in Atteka." Saturos muttered. "It is still a long shot, but we might actually be able to fill out our hole in our party before we get too far along."

"Seems risky to get one too soon." I pointed out. "What if they betray us?"

"That's a risk we've already taken." Karst retorted. "Is Alex trustworthy?"

"No." Menardi admitted. "He's a snake, one whose likely using us as much as we are using him. However, we need him."

"I don't like this." I admitted. "It feels like an ill omen."

"It's definitely an ill omen." Mold agreed.

"Agreed." Saturos' voice was soft, as he folded his hands under his chin. "But we don't have much in the way of a choice. We land at Tolbi, it should take another five days if our heading is right. From there, we'll travel over land."

"It'd be faster to take a sloop over the sea." Agatio sniffed, but Saturos shook his head.

"We have no money and we take no risks." He answered. "While we are on the water we might as well be down two fighters. We stay in Tolbi for a few days to let Felix and Karst recover, and then we make for the northern range. There is a path through to Vault called the Silk Road from Tolbi that we can use to travel all the way on land. Its only a few days longer." Saturos declared. "We stop in Vault to pick up Alex and then we make for the Vale. We'll consider our options in more detail when we get there."

"Well, at least its a plan." Menardi muttered. "I still think we should more in Indra. It will allow us to leave from the Venus Lighthouse faster."

"The distances aren't in our favour." Saturos answered. "Any questions?"

There were none really forthcoming. It was nice to know where we were going, though.

Five days could not pass fast enough. The world and the days grew longer very fast once we left the frozen sea. It was almost surreal how one day, the day lasted only two hours, while the next it was almost ten.

Tolbi was a city based on the shore by an inland sea called the Karagol. It was a relief to finally see it, and even more of a relief that we had finally disembarked. My legs wobbled as the world was finally stable for the first time in over a week, and Karst almost collapsed onto the ground in happiness.

"Don't be too excited, you two." Menardi rolled her eyes as she marched off the boat. "It feels off." Now that I had a moment to gather my thoughts, I had to agree. Stepping off the boat made me feel like something was wrong. Something was fundamentally wrong.

Almost like I was being watched, but worse.

"The air is warm." I muttered.

"Like a cool summer day." Mold muttered. "That feels like…"

"Psynergy." I muttered. "Menardi-"

"I feel it too." She answered. "I don't get it. How strong an Adept are we sensing?" She paused for a moment, no doubt communing with her own Djinni.

"It's a Jupiter Adept." Mold confirmed, bobbing his head up and down. "A very strong one."

"How strong?"

"... I don't know how to explain it." Not what I actually wanted to hear from Mold. If he couldn't explain it, then it was because I couldn't really comprehend it. I bit my lip.

Well, we had a Jupiter Adept here, but…

"We worry about this later." Karst muttered. "I need to sleep. A real sleep."

"Agreed. We need to identify where we can find supplies, too." Saturos noted. "There's no time to dilly dally…"

I just sighed.

Land felt so good.

Are they clairvoyant? Can they see the future? If those two take the boat back in a straight line, it's not like they can be caught up to, so the only risk would be people already in their path. Saturos is being more than a bit too cautious here.
"The problem with that is that you have to take everyone to Vale to get the Mars Star in the first place. Tolbi and Imil are in opposite directions and you don't have horses. Its not using the boat that is the problem, its getting back to it!"

"On the other hand, if you all stick together, you have to deal with being easy to find! After all, Adepts attract each other, and most of your opposition, realistically, are Adepts... Unless there's a Dragon Tribe in the Vale. No, there has to be Dragon Tribe members still alive in the Vale! Felix came from there!"

"Oh no. You might have more opposition then people think. A dragon could catch your party pretty quick."

Nanimani said:
Rephrase. I was just staring at this for like ten seconds, unable to parse.
The only thing I can think it's saying is that the two groups have different destinations which... Yeah? One group goes back to boat while the other continues towards next lighthouse? I don't understand.
"The suggestion you responded to was the idea that one group takes the Mars Star back to Prox and lights the Lighthouse, while the other group continues to Imil. Ignoring that the group that returns to Prox will never make it back to the other Lighthouses in time to be useful just because they won't know where anyone is, it also requires they make the trip from the Vale back to Tolbi to pick up the boat. Menardi also actually has to be in this group, but this isn't a flaw that anyone brought up."

Nanimani said:
I feel like the person that lived in Vale most of his life might have noticed if other people turned into dragons. That there exist dragon tribe people there is probably, but being dragon tribe doesn't mean you can turn into a dragon.
"The Brood existed in concert with the four ancient tribes. The Vale is where the four tribes intersected. It'd be stranger if there wasn't anyone there that could do it."

"Becoming a dragon requires a certain level of duress, talent and general luck in breeding. The Proxians have a ritual of reverence which reveals this talent, and the Lemurians have something similar, but the Vale, given its isolation, probably hasn't needed such powers for a long time. As far as anyone knows, the other two ancient tribes are well and truly extinct."

"Felix's own abilities only revealed themselves in the Vale Storm. How would he know if there are or aren't others?"

Nanimani said:
I'm going to assume the blessing of Mars isn't enough to make up for the loss in manpower, so it'd be a bad plan for that reason alone.
"While the Blessing of Mars is potent, in such a plan it'd be immediately negated by the Blessing of Mercury anyway."

"When a Lighthouse is lit, its respective element, in theory, becomes much stronger."

"The effect is most pronounced around the Lighthouse. Imil and Prox are in somewhat closer proximity to each other then the Venus and Jupiter Lighthouses are, so they somewhat cancel each other out. On the other hand, Felix will need to obtain a different elements Dragon Gene before he reaches the Jupiter Lighthouse or he will be crippled. The only way to avoid the issue is simply to not be a Venus Adept while inside."

Spectral Waltz said:
And depending on how Vale goes, we could have several young Adepts with fairly potent abilities for their age after us, possibly more. Saturos is literally the strongest fighter among us and in the game Mercury lighthouse weakens him to the point that four Adept children are able to beat him down. Splitting up is dangerous.
"As much as Saturos and Menardi are proud of their abilities, those who live around Alchemy's Tomb are the strongest Adepts just by location. In a situation where they are weakened by the Mercury Lighthouse, it is conceivable they could simply be overwhelmed by numbers."

"Of course, in such a circumstance, Felix serves as a equalizer. In the relative circle of powers, its almost inconceivable for a dragon to lose to a small group of Adepts unless they have some dragon slaying weaponry to hand."

Bloody Sport
"Land sweet land, am I right?"

I could not agree with Mold more. The little Venus Djinni was grinning in its own way as a pair of Mars Djinni flickered into my view, basically kissing the ground beside him. Menardi and Saturos' Djinni, I think. The Proxians as a rule did not communicate with Djinni, so I'd only seen them a few times in the last few years. To see another Adepts Djinni was to have that Adept open their heart to you, after all.

Agatio and Karst, I knew a little less well.

"Menardi, Karst. Find us an inn." Saturos' voice was gentle, but the steady bark of his commands also drew my focus back to the present. "Karst, make sure Menardi doesn't pick some shack for us to crash in. I want a real bed."

"Got it." Karst groaned. Menardi pursed her lips.

"We have no coin, Saturos. We should save what we-"

"Sell my mantle." Saturos retorted. "We need rest, Menardi." I wasn't brave enough to point out that mantle was made with the wool of several fire rats. It was probably worth more then several of the buildings in Tolbi. Proxians had little need for the coin that other nations used. Theirs was a society still in the age of bartering.

The fine goods they had were so exotic that it would easily fetch a high price, and we could use that to our advantage. Just carrying some supplies for bartering might last us quite some time. It was not a perfect solution, but it did stave it off for a while.

"We will need supplies, too." Agatio pointed out. Saturos nodded.

"Find us travel supplies. We won't need much in the way of camping gear, but salted foods and water is a must. The last time we made this trip we had to boil entirely too much salt water." Saturos admitted. "And if I have to drink any more alcohol and lemon…"

"Got it." Agatio moved before any of the rest of us. I suspected he just wanted to get away. He was not a people person, and the fact we had all been stuck in very close quarters was enough to make us all nervous.

"And me?"

"You're with me." Saturos confirmed my thoughts. "I want to do some exploring."

"That's code for he wants to know what this presence is." Saturos' Mars Djinni, who from memory, was called Temper, spoke up. Only Adepts could see Djinni, and even then, only if their hearts beat together. It was the safest way to vocalize the thought in Saturos' head.

"Felix is curious too." Mold spoke up. I just rolled my eyes. Well, neither of our Djinni were really able to keep their mouths shut. Perhaps it was for the best.

The city of Tolbi was huge, stretching across the shoreline of the sea and inland further then my eyes could actually see. The architecture was very different from what I remembered of the Vale, too, with great stone blocks making up every building, painted over and dyed orange and brown. The thatching of the roof was simply alien, and the streets were paved and lined with greenery.

It was alien to me. It must have been twice as alien to Saturos.

"I didn't think there were really this many people in one place in the world." I admitted softly as we walked out of the docks. Saturos nodded his understanding, his hand absently hiding his sword behind the small of his back, where his cape could cover it easily. I followed suite. There was no need to alarm anyone, after all.

"It wasn't this big seven years ago." Saturos admitted. "Every time I come here, it is bigger and bigger." It reminded me that Saturos was well travelled. He had been part of the original peace delegation to try and solve the Rift Crisis without conflict, as well as the first attempt to steal the Stars three years ago. He travelled a lot. In many ways, he was simply larger then life and twice as dangerous. "It's one of three hubs of the world, so to speak."

"And the other two?"

"Contigo, over on Atteka, is almost as big, but not as grand." Saturos noted. "Alhafra, over in Osenia, actually might be larger, but Osenia has far fewer towns then Gondowin and Angara, so the people are a bit more centralized."

"We have to go to Atteka at some point." I noted. Saturos nodded.

"Yeah. Contigo is a nice place. You'll be able to agree with me before this is through." It was also easy to forget that Saturos had been part of the party who had confirmed where the Lighthouses were. He was a hero to Prox, and lived his life like one.

I wonder if that was a good thing. It always looked like his shoulders were straining under the weight.

Tolbi was difficult to navigate. The townspeople did not slow down, and always seemed to be moving. I could smell the fish and salt on the air, which told me one of the cities main trades. However, our attempts to get directions to places of interest just kept running us in circles, until we stopped in front of the large dome that was the Colosso.

"I don't get it. Why do we keep ending up here?" I asked. Saturos pursed his lips, as he put a hand to his chin.

"It's normally a yearly competition. We're a few months early." He admitted. "It usually kicks off in the spring."

"It?"

"The Colosso." Saturos motioned to the great stadium before us. "Its a mix of gladiatorial combat, showmanship, obstacle courses and of course, duels. Only the best and brightest win, or so they say." He trailed off, yet a moment later, we both felt it.

It suddenly went very cold, a wrong chill ripping up my spine. It was like a splinter had been wedged in my mind and pried it open. The force of it was so strong that I couldn't even begin to muster a defence. I was simply an open book to whoever was on the other end of the splinter.

Then the splinter was ripped away, as Mold leapt atop my head and shielded my mind with his presence.

"I've got you!"

"What the hell was that!?"

"How?" I felt like my head was going to split open, my hand massaging my temple. Saturos looked like he'd fared even worse, his already pale skin almost turning deathly as he collapsed against a fountains wall. I stared for a long moment, as the scene began to present itself as something horribly wrong.

The fountain was of a somewhat young man, garbed in a travelling cape and wearing a magnificent beard, a sword with a split blade pitched against the ground. My first thought was that it was a statue to the Old Hero, Ladon, but…

I shook my head. No. It wasn't. The statue had a name on the plaque.

Our great founder, Babi.

"That was intense." My attention was drawn back down to Saturos, whose face was starting to regain its colour. "Just… how strong is this Adept?"

"It isn't strength." Temper spoke up. "Well, it is partly strength. It's lack of control, mainly. Its indiscriminate."

"We're Adepts. We try to resist it." I muttered. It was becoming clear just what we were dealing with from this power. It was someone who was reading the mind of everyone around them simultan…eous…ly… "Shit. Saturos-"

"We're compromised?"

"I don't know, but what I am would have been obvious the second they entered my head." I answered. "Someone knows we're here." The line of his mouth was getting thinner, and that renowned cunning of Saturos began to grind its gears.

"We're in trouble." He muttered. "We're no closer to finding this Adept, yet they are just going to learn more about us while we are here. If we sleep together, we can take shifts and shield each other, but…"

"We'll let our guard down sooner or later." I glanced at the sun. It was very close to setting. "Do we return to Menardi and Karst?"

"I hate to do it when we have nothing to show for it." Saturos admitted. "We can search a little more. There has to be more then one Adept here. With a Jupiter Adept that strong, they must be attracting a lot of people."

I nodded, my gaze returning to the arena.

"You said its a yearly event, right?"

"Yeah."

"Its a bit crowded here for it to be yearly, isn't it?"

"That's a good point." Saturos glanced behind him, the corner of his mouth twitching. "Want to check it out?"

"Yeah." The doors were surprisingly open, and the halls lined with posters. It was surprisingly poorly drawn, almost cartoonish, with a declaration of an 'Exhibition Event'. It looked like a challenge, where one fought deadly monsters for a boon. "People find this entertaining?" I asked. Saturos nodded.

"I suppose that sounds weird to you." He admitted. "Yeah, this is called blood sport. Peoples struggles are entertainment. Over in Osenia, there is something similar, though its a bit less organised and street based."

"It's a bit barbaric."

"It's fun." Saturos shrugged his shoulders. "For a warrior, it hones that instinct to fight and live. For others…" He paused, peering at the poster. "Gambling, figures. Apparently the monster usually wins."

"I see."

"That reward though."

"Saturos, you can't be considering it…"

"Between you, me and Agatio? We can do it easy." He declared, and I could see something resembling a bloodthirsty grin on his face. I couldn't understand that desire to fight. "Sign up is at the Lord's Manor, huh. Maybe we could get free board there."

"Menardi and Karst already got us an inn."

"Well, it's worth checking out, at least." Saturos noted. I just groaned. I wasn't going to win this.

The inside of the Colosso was a circular arena. In the center, there was some sort of giant lion with a goat and eagles head prowling the arena, with a tail that I could swear was a snake. The crowd was almost gone, so obviously the event had been winding down.

There was no one in the arena with it, though there was a not unhealthy amount of blood. I had to wonder how such a brutal sport was fun, but Saturos just nodded to himself.

"He's confident." Mold declared. I'd have rathered that he wasn't, myself.

"Yeah, we can take it. Reminds my of the fire cats, just with a few more heads." Saturos admitted. "Right, lets check out this manor, then we'll swing back around."

"Fine."

The Lord's Manor, as we discovered, was in a small glade within the city, like a piece of nature that had been transplanted into Tolbi to hide something. My guess was, it'd be something ugly, given the sacrilege of the cities founder having a statue in Ladon's image. As we walked the path, the splinter seemed to be coming back, but Mold was running interference like before.

"I think we found where our Adept is." I muttered. Saturos nodded.

"That would explain why I am being drawn here."

"I'm not."

"You're a Venus Adept. I'd have been surprised if you were." That was a fair enough point. While we might have both been Adepts, Venus and Jupiter were in opposition. We probably weren't drawn together the same way that Saturos was being drawn to this place. I didn't feel that tug in the bottom of my stomach that told me there was an Adept here. Rather, it was just a general feeling of contentment.

"Hail, travelers." The guards were jovial. However, they were also armed, and I knew that those spears were sharp. It was an odd city where the guards were openly armed and ready.

"We come to inquire as to the Colosso event." Saturos declared. The guards just waved us in, grinning and muttering among themselves as to whether or not we'd be good sport. The very idea made me feel just a little ill.

The splinter in my head almost felt like it bobbed up and down in agreement. As we walked through the doors of the manor, with more levels then I could count, I clicked my fingers to get Temper's attention.

"It's not working. They got through." I whispered. Temper nodded.

"Saturos will run interference. He wants you to find them." Temper declared. I nodded. That made sense. As a Venus Adept, I was suited to such things. Feeling the pulse of life of those around me was easy, for all humans teemed with life.

"Give me about fifteen." I muttered to Saturos as we walked past the staircase, as we were directed. The halls were full of guards and servants. I was beginning to worry there'd be no chance to slip away, when Saturos visibly and almost comically tripped, dragging everyone's attention to him.

I took my chance, turned a corner I was definitely not meant to, and bolted down the hall. I took a deep breath as I settled by a wall, closed my eyes, and let myself feel the pulse around me.

Every Adept element had such an ability. Jupiter was infamous for its mind reading. Venus could sense and encourage life around it. Mars could manipulate temperatures. Mercury could influence the form of liquids and solids. Jupiter's was said to be the most effective ability, while Mercury the least, but at that point, you get into the legends of the Vale and the Brood War.

I let those thoughts stay away for the moment. That I was a monster to be hunted did not sit well with me.

The majority of the life in the manor were on the bottom floor. There was, however, one small pulse above me. Biting my lip, I kept walking down the hall, stopping by a window, and gently opening it.

I'd never get up that stairwell without being seen. However, no one probably expected me to just climb the wall.

"Mold."

"Right." Technically, Mold and I were the same person. He was my Djinni, my psynergy made manifest in a form that my human mind could easily comprehend. A crutch, in some ways. When we joined together, I could direct my full power. When I left him to his own devices, he directed the part of me that used psynergy.

My hand glowed gold as I motioned at the wall, and vines shot up the wall. I'd have to remember to get rid of them when I was done.

The window was not locked. You'd think it would be, but then again, with the number of guards, it didn't seem so necessary. I was now on the third floor. There were at least five.

Two pulses. One on this floor, one above. The one above was too rhythmic. Whoever it was, they were asleep. Our Adept was probably on this floor with me. After all, they had to be awake to be reading peoples minds.

That, and as I walked the halls, the splinter dug in deeper.

The halls were lined with pictures and statues, an amassing of extravagance and wealth that seemed completely pointless. I had to wonder what kind of lives the mayors of this city lived that they had so much to spend?

"Here."

I stopped at the final door. The splinter in my head was huge and threatening to smash through. I took a deep breath, reached out, and turned the-

*Click*

It didn't turn.

I just groaned. Of course it was l…ocked…

Why would an Adept lock their door from the outside? The door knob clearly had its lock on this side. I flicked the latch, and opened the door.

And found myself face to face with a hand and crackling lightning.

If I remember my elemental relations correctly, we should be able to resist one lightning bolt fairly well. We just need to keep her from doing a runner before we can try to sell her on our goals.
"Woah woah woah. With how strong her Mind Read is? If she hits you with a lightning bolt, your flying out of that manor!"

"That'll almost certainly put you down."

"... It's not that strong."

Spectral Waltz said:
Think we can dodge and talk at the same time? Or do you think she'll run for the door if we leave it open?
"Maybe. Dodging lightning is extremely hard, and if it hits you, you can kiss any cover you have goodbye. Felix will turn into a dragon if he's mortally wounded to save his own life. At least right now she might not have blabbed..."

"Also, if a fight starts and anyone notices that'll be it, you'll have to leave Tolbi. A bit of an issue when your boat is here."

"... Lalivero is really far away though."

Boy Meets Girl
"Whoa! Calm down!" I lifted my hands into the air in a sign of surrender. Maybe I could draw my sword fast enough, but I had my doubts. A blast of lightning to the face was not how I wanted to end my day. I was still a little woozy from the boat trip, I'm not sure even if my sword was in hand, I'd be able to strike true.

A pair of purple eyes narrowed.

"You broke into my room." The speaker was a bit shorter then me, her hair a bright blond and her eyes a piercing purple. The tunic she wore was just as exotic as she was, for her features did not resemble anyone I'd ever seen before. They were sharp, almost angular. She did not resemble a normal person at all.

"The lock is on the outside."

"... Right. It is." The hand stopped crackling. There was no chance this time that I'd prevent that splinter from prying open my mind. I winced as it jammed back in, past Mold and simply took up residence. "Are you satisfied, Felix?"

Right. She was a mind reader. Not being in someones head was probably an alien idea to her. That she knew my name was not so surprising in that light.

"I just wanted to talk."

"Talk… Well, I guess I have nothing but time. Come in. Don't mind the mess." The girl turned on her heel after a moment, striding back into a room that she had, rightly, called a mess. "You'll find it less painful if you stop trying to resist."

"Or you could just… get out."

"I don't know how." It was a candid admission, but it confirmed what I already suspected. The girl was very strong, but very raw. I don't even know where someone would go for training in how to not read someones mind. Her powers were strong, probably stronger then mine unless I unleashed my full power, but she had no control at all. "Full power. Quaint."

"You know why?"

"..." She didn't answer, but her shoulders shifted slightly, as if she was agitated. "I think so."

She was right. The room was very messy. It was strewn with a blanket from what I presumed was her bed that she hadn't bothered to pick up, and plenty of paper and oils and brushes from what I assumed was attempts to paint. In the corner was a picture, one that looked like it was half finished, for it was only outlined, yet as I looked at it, I got the strangest sense of deja vu.

"Is that meant to be… us?"

"Us? Oh, you and your companions? I don't know what the others look like. You tell me." She shrugged absently as she flopped onto her bed, floating for a moment before she crashed down. "Why are you here, Felix?"

"What is your name?" I shot back. "Normally you give your name first." She was right, just not resisting did ease the pain of the splinter in my mind almost completely, but it was hard to be comfortable with a girl in your head.

"Sheba. And stop worrying. You aren't half as annoying as King Babi." The girl rolled her eyes with a huff, rolling onto her stomach and staring at me curiously. "Answer the question."

"You know the answer."

"I haven't had a proper conversation with another human being in over a year. Humour me." Her imperious little declaration brought a pang of something else to my stomach, but her face immediately twisted into something ugly. "Don't you dare pity me."

"My group are traveling to the Vale on a great quest. If we succeed, we'll be heroes. If we fail, we'll be villains for however little time this doomed world has left." I answered cheekily, as I closed the door behind me and started picking up the discarded paper.

"Just leave it."

"A clean room is a healthy mind."

"Oh shush." She rolled her eyes at that, kicking her feet in the air absently. "They're just drawings I couldn't get right anyway."

"Why do you draw?"

"I'm a mind reader, not someone with photographic memory. I wanted to remember." She answered simply.

"Remember what?"

"The boy whose going to die." I blinked, my gaze falling back on Sheba. "A blade of light, from your best friend. That's how it always goes."

"It always goes? I don't get it."

"I dream of the future. Sometimes its the near future, sometimes the far future." Her abilities were sounding more useful by the second. If she could tell the future- "Don't get too excited. Far as I can tell, the future is set in stone."

"It can't be changed?"

"If it can, then I can't do it." She shrugged again, rolling back onto her back lazily. "He uses a sword of light. His hair is blue, but I'm pretty sure that's not his real hair colour. After all, you're a brunette, but in my dreams, your blond."

Then she was describing something that not only hadn't happened, but something I couldn't do yet. Great. I just let out a sigh, as I looked down at the paper in my hand.

"This is-"

"Passion draws attention. So does emotion. It helped me get it out of my head."

"... That's.." I just shook my head. "And you can't turn it off?"

"Sleeping during the day is just easier. I don't think I've been out in the sun for a while." Sheba answered. "People at least usually do that at night. I can ignore it… sorta, if I'm awake. If I'm asleep its stuck in my dreams."

That sounded annoying. That sounded very annoying. The papers could live on what passed for her desk. The paints on the other hand, well, some were dry and would have to be soaked, but most of them were sealed in pots at least.

"Felix, you don't have to tidy my room. I'm not a child."

"Humour me." I threw her words back in her face. It kept my hands busy and stopped me from dwelling on the fact a pretty girl was in my head.

"Thinking that I'm pretty isn't going to fluster me. I've heard all of it and worse before."

"I suppose you have." I just sighed. Well, that plan was probably always doomed to fail. She was pretty though. That exotic face of hers was definitely charming compared to the scales of the Proxian skin. It was nice, not to look at someone and be reminded of oneself. "Why are you up here?"

"I'm a prisoner. Duh." Sheba's response was blunt and almost sarcastic. "King Babi wants his lighthouse, those he hurts be damned. I haven't been home in years."

"A princess in a tower?"

"Well, the third storey of a mansion, but same thing really." Sheba answered. "I come from Lalivero. It's over by the Venus Lighthouse, in case you were curious."

"... Right." Of course she knew that was one of our destinations. She could read mi-

"Actually, its because I recognize the man downstairs." Sheba cut me off. "I think we met about five years ago."

"You've met Saturos?"

"You think I remember every name of every person I meet? I just told you I don't have a photographic memory. My head can only stand so much, most of the thoughts that I see I let leave again just as fast." Sheba retorted. "Huh, oysters for dinner. Guess Babi has reason to be happy."

"You can tell what's going on downstairs?"

"Yes. Babi isn't a very good Adept. Actually, I don't think he's really an Adept at all. His psynergy is really weak." Sheba answered, rolling her eyes. "He's excited. Your friend promised you'd do something, I'd guess participate in his little blood battle."

"Wonderful." Of course Saturos volunteered us. I only hope the reward was worth it.

"It is. Babi promised he'd fulfill the wish of the warrior who slayed the chimera." Sheba noted. "It's pretty valuable. I think your friend intends to use it to cut a few days off your trip by getting a ride over the sea."

A ride over the sea. Right, that would be helpful. However, I could already think of a better use for it.

"You just met me."

"I don't have a reason to dislike you." I hated prisoners. For years, it'd felt like I was a prisoner. I wasn't really inclined to leave this girl imprisoned here.

"Babi won't like it."

"So?" We also needed a Jupiter Adept, so…

"You don't need a Jupiter Adept."

"There's no guarantee that'll work. It's a win-win. You get out of here and we get more help."

"And what if I just go home? What if I don't want in on your crazy quest?"

"Adepts draw each other together. I don't think we'd be here talking if you weren't interested." I stared at the girl's amethyst eyes. Sheba held my gaze for a very long moment, before she let her eyes wonder away.

"... I have conditions."

"Do you now? I didn't think yo-"

"That I have no power in this situation is exactly why I have conditions, Felix. I can't stop you if you decide to do it anyway." Sheba sniffed. "I'm sick of being a prisoner. Let me do something on my terms for once."

"Why don't you just break out?"

"What do you think Babi will do to my people if I do? I'm a prisoner. It works both ways. If I'm here, Lalivero does what Babi wants. If I stay here, Babi humors my peoples existence. If I just left, well…" The way she answered that told me she'd already tried leaving once, and it must have ended very poorly.

"..." Still, we needed a Jupiter Adept, and I'd rather not go through with Saturos' backup plan. Fighting a chimera was actually preferable to that. "Name them."

"Huh?"

"Your conditions. Name them. I'm not making a decision without knowing."

"I want to go to Lalivero. Not now, maybe not in the future, but I want to see my home again."

"That's too easy. What's your real condition?"

"... I'm your companion. Not your friend's. I'm not trading one prison for another. I'd rather die first." I swallowed. Hard. Directly defying Saturos on this matter would not ingratiate me to Agatio, and Menardi would probably take it as reason to abandon me as soon as she gets the chance. On the other hand, though, I did have leverage with Saturos, as a member of the Dragon Clan. It was, ultimately, such a small term to dictate that he might well let it slide.

However, her choice of word made it clear what she wanted. Companion. She wanted a seat at the metaphorical table, too.

"I'll think about it."

"What is it with men saying that. You've already made a decision."

"And you want me to say it?"

"Of course I do."

"Then let me issue a condition back."

"Go ahead, Mister Dragon."

"You need to learn how to control yourself. It's going to be really hard to convince the others this arrangement is worth it if you can't even control your mind reading."

"Tch. They are Mars Adepts. They wouldn't know difficult to control if it slapped them upside the head."

"Fire isn't exactly easy to control."

"If it can't burn you, then why worry? It took me years to work out how to use lightning without shocking myself." Sheba answered dryly. "Fine. If you can provide a teacher, I'm happy to learn, but you need to provide a teacher."

"Geez. All take, take, take."

"If I could work it out myself, I'd have already done so." Sheba just smiled in spite of the discussion. "Alright, Felix. It's a deal?"

"No, one more condition."

"Is it that I don't blab?"

"Of course."

"Who would I blab to?"

Well, she had a point there. I just nodded, glancing about the messy room. It wasn't quite as bad now, but how was I going to get out without alerting anyone? The window, at a guess, was locked.

"You'd be right."

"Well, back the way I came then." I muttered. Sheba nodded.

"Remember to lock the door."

"Sorry? You don't want me to-"

"Last thing I want is the old geezer knowing I decided anything." Sheba retorted. "Ether, go with him." I blinked as a small purple Djinni popped into existence. Djinni normally couldn't go far from their owners, but- "Relax. My area of power might as well cover all of Tolbi. There's no where Ether can't follow you here."

"Is there a reason I want her?"

"Besides that it means we can talk while apart? Think of it as insurance. At least if you decide to ditch me, I'll know."

"No confidence."

"I've been disappointed before, hero." Sheba just winked, as Ether grabbed a picture and deposited it in my hand. "You can keep that one."

I blinked. The person on it was all too familiar.

"How do you know what my sister looks like?"

"I can see the future. Take a guess." Sheba answered. "You'll be seeing her soon."

I wasn't sure if I should find that disturbing or not. Ether plopped herself on my shoulder as I left the room with a soft goodbye. Sheba was far too capable of pressing the buttons that I sincerely wished no one would.

Returning to the ground floor wasn't hard. Saturos was waiting for me a small ways down the trail, leaning against a tree. I nodded to him as I walked past, and we fell into lockstep almost immediately.

"We found something good." Mold spoke up. Saturos just nodded.

"Helpful to our quest?"

"A Jupiter Adept. Our mind reader. Her Djinni is with us."

"She's willing to help?"

"It's a little more complicated then that. She's a prisoner."

"So, I guess you've volunteered us for something?" I asked. Saturos nodded.

"Babi, the king of these lands, is offering a boon for slaying his chimera in this exhibition match. We can use it to shave a few days off our trip."

"Why a prisoner?"

"Something about a lighthouse near Lalivero. It goes both ways. Sounds like Babi pissed off a few towns along the way."

"I see."

"There's a problem with that?"

"I can get a Jupiter Adept, but we lose your shortcut."

The two of us stopped walking. Saturos glanced at me, concern spreading over his face.

"The way you put that… You aren't intending to kidnap her, are you?"

"No, but she wants to be a part of the group. Not just a prisoner."

"The more people we bring into this, the more likely it is to fail. We only need her for the Jupiter Lighthouse and she isn't going anywhere. We just kidnap her on the way back through."

"You'd rather our Jupiter Adept be hostile?"

"We don't have time to indulge every girl who catches your eye, Felix."

"Even if she'd be indebted to us?"

"We're already staring the face of many delays. We can't afford to allow more delays to hit because we didn't take an opportunity. We aren't going to Atteko for months, there's still time to find someone else."

"And what if I said that as the member of the Dragon Clan here, I was going to save her regardless?" Saturos froze at that.

"Felix, don't put me in this situation."

"You are a guardian, aren't you? Which is it? The Dragon Clan or the quest?" I hated to pull this on Saturos, but it was feeling like I had to. Saturos did not answer for a long moment.

"I have to keep the group together. Agatio and Menardi at a minimum will riot if we do this." He grumbled. "Felix…"

"Yes?"

"You save her, you do it alone. I can't justify putting our resources at risk against a chimera for an Adept who'll still be here when we come back in about two months."

[X] Deal. Save Sheba yourself.
[ ] No deal. Work with Saturos for a shortcut.

Spectral Waltz said:
How would saving her ourself work exactly? Does that mean we fight the chimera alone? Or does that mean Saturos is goign to fight the chimera and we have to bust her out violently rather than sorta diplomatically?
"Saturos was fairly clear. If you wish to save her, you have to beat the chimera alone. The rest of the group will not be put at risk for this."

"That changes the math on fighting a chimera quite a bit. Felix could win regardless, but without at least one other person, i think he'd have to transform to do it, and the last thing we need getting out is a Brood being in Tolbi."

"The dragon hunters of Xian would be coming very quickly. Word travels fast on the silk road."

"Mold is right. Felix alone cannot fight three heads safely. However, if even one ally is obtained, the battle shifts drastically in your favour."

"... Maybe the younger sister?"

"Otherwise, we could do this violently."

"Sheba will never go for it. She cares about Lalivero too much."

Spectral Waltz said:
Felix' younger sister is in Vale, too far to acquire and return, unless you're talking about a different sister?
"The fire witch's younger sister."

"Ultimately, Saturos and Karst, as Guardians and Warriors of Prox, have their highest loyalty to the Dragon Clan. While Saturos has other considerations, Karst might not."

"Normally it would be safe to include Agatio in that, but with his temper... Well, it would be safe to assume he'd spite you."

Spectral Waltz said:
That just leaves trying to get some help from other prospective entrants. There's a monetary prize on top of the boon, right? Surely there's at least one fighter around here who'd be willing to walk away with the gold in exchange for letting us ask the favor...
"While you are correct, no random person will work as well with Felix as one of his companions. This does not make your situation as much better."

"... Though... if you could make Babi allow you to get Sheba's help..."

"Is that even a option!?"

Spectral Waltz said:
EDIT: Wait, are Agatio and Karst brother and sister? I don't recall them being so, but...
"Menardi and Karst are siblings."

Spectral Waltz said:
Babi might try to arrest us out of spite though, and even if he didn't, he might take revenge on the Laliverans...

"... Um... not a lot of people know what Sheba looks like..."

"Getting her out isn't hard, but we'd need a disguise."

"And you'd need a way to get around registration. Maybe that mask Felix was carving?"

"The mask of the White Dragon? That's... a loaded proposition."

"It would hide her identity, though..."

Spectral Waltz said:
This strikes me as difficult overall, but doable. We definitely want to talk to Karst ASAP though, before Saturos can accidentally poison the well on that front. I don't think he'd do it deliberately, the guy does have honor after all, but the wrong implications could make convincing her a lot harder. Especially when really does look up to her sister...
"While true, Karst does also have obligations. It's not like Menardi is dead and she's declared a blood feud."

"Though if she got hurt, Menardi might get mad."

Spectral Waltz said:
She probably doesn't have the fine control needed to use Wind Psyenergy to alter her voice, so outside of the white dragon mask, are there any more mundane ways that would do the trick?
"Well, the Mask of the White Dragon is a ritual mask used to symbolize one as a stand in for Lord Ladon, the Dragon God. It'd be... similar to a wedding proposal in many ways. The ritual was intended to represent the meeting and union of Ladon and Myria."

"It does hide ones voice though. It replicates Ladon's instead. A girl might sound weird through it, but it would work."

"... Excuse me?"

Spectral Waltz said:
Or methods using Earth psyenergy I suppose..?
"There is no method I know of using Earth Psynergy. This really is Jupiter and Mercury's domain, which we don't have access to here..."

"I suppose if we induced smoke inhalation her voice might sound hoarse and different enough to fool people for a while...

Spectral Waltz said:
EDIT: Or come to think of it, what does it mean to incorporate a Jupiter gene? That would give us some aspects of Wind Psyenergy wouldn't it? Would our control be good enough to pull a small effect like that off?
"... This is a method not really available to you yet, since it'd require Sheba to be present with you anyway, but using the power of the Dragon Clan, you could take the Jupiter Dragon Gene from her temporarily by force and use it to change your current element."

"As I understand, without a strong bond and willingness between parties, that is exceptionally painful."

"Worse for our case. It might kill her. Her constitution probably isn't on par with the Proxians. Otherwise, you'd need to find a Jupiter Gene from another source to use this."

Spectral Waltz said:
So that's a no go on trying to borrow the Jupiter gene, a hard last resort maybe on smoke inhalation? What the fuck?

I mean if it works it works but still, Ow.

And a... Well... Would it be better to make a ceremony with appropriate gravitas when it comes to offering her the mask? Or would it be better to make light of the whole thing to try and smooth over the whole proposal bit...

(I mean, we'll probably imply something either way, but...)
"There is no smoothing that sort of thing over. Sheba can read minds."

Spectral Waltz said:
It's not like I was planning to try and hide it or something... Just you know... Try to downplay it a little bit to make it less awkward.

It's probably already awkward isn't it.
"Very."

Spectral Waltz said:
...Is there any chance that Sheba could help us guess at Karst's response to the question? Maybe help us refine our approach?
"..."

"Simoom says that she's worried about doing her job. Her priorities are at odds with the fire witch."

"I don't think it'd take much convincing."

"Can't blame her. Felix reacted almost as badly to the boat as she did. She probably won't be at full strength for a while."

"Saturos won't like it, but if she says she's helping, he also won't stop her."

Nanimani said:
Look, it's that or not having the mindreader on our side.
Like... She just said she'd rather die than be a prisoner again, and now Saturos "No, we'll take her prisoner in a few months when we need her."
Saturos, you do understand that gives her time to fuck you over or take the extreme option, right? If you're not holding up to the deal, she doesn't have to either.
"Being blunt... Saturos doesn't need her to uphold her side of the deal if you force her to hand over the gene. At that point, whether she even survives or not is irrelevant."

"Oi!"

"It is the truth."

Spectral Waltz said:
I think Nani was more suggesting that she could just kill herself while we're gone if she's really serious about the 'I'd rather die' bit...
"... Well, now that you've suggested it... she might."

Spectral Waltz said:
If our word may be law then that only makes our honor and honesty more important than if we were an ordinary mortal.
"With how few Dragon Clan remain, at least in Prox, who revere the old ways and were against the Brood War, those who bear the bloodline are revered. These same people oppose the Goddess that is worshipped in most of Weyard, though her worship has been declining over the years."

"Of course, as Agatio shows, there are exceptions. In the Vale, it is a bit more common for the bloodline to exist, since it is where the Golden Sun was sealed."

"The other places where the old tribes exist have their own traditions, I'm sure. It might be more dangerous to reveal yourself around the Mercury, Venus or Jupiter Lighthouses."

"That said, the Yorae Dragon that everyone has been waiting for, now that would be revered as a God Emperor."

Spectral Waltz said:
One thing I've been meaning to ask, are Vale Adepts predominantly Venus and Mars adepts? Or does their population represent all four elements?
"The Vale has Adepts of every type, though they tend to not be quite as specialised as ones from elsewhere."

"That makes no sense."

"No, it was a somewhat known phenomena among the Proxians that the Adepts of the Vale had significant variety. However, they lacked shear power or specialised training of the Proxians. One assumes that extends to the other elements, so a Jupiter Adept from the Vale might be far worse at reading minds."

"Though as where the Golden Sun was sealed, the Vale is the most common place where the Dragon Clan could be found. They say the fabled city Dragnier was somewhere in the area."

"I'd like to see it."

"That sounds like An..."

The Out Of World said:
"Xian is a town and temple in the East of Angara, so from our perspective fairly far Northeast. If luck holds, we at no point need to go near there."

"The Temple of Xian is home to Long Xian Kung Fu, a style of fighting that was developed back before the Brood War for exactly that process. The school has limited students, but all of them have honed their bodies into dragon slaying weapons."

"The weaponry they use are nasty too. They forged the bodies and bones of dragons into better methods to kill them. Its the closest to a cult that Angara has."

"We probably want nothing to do with them."

"... Don't you have to pass that way twice?"

"Yeah, Imil is even further north. Its why sailing around the continent was considered. Dodging Xian entirely is not a bad idea."

"We don't have that kind of time though."

"That will have the warrior-scholar and the little sister worried though."

"Hazards of the trail."

ShadowAngelBeta said:
I find the idea of having Sheba sneak out and join us in her own match as being amusing, though mostly only if the Tyrant responds alright to it. If he doesn't then we just shot ourself in the foot. I think Sheba would have been (unfortunately) watching him for long enough to have an idea on that though?
"Babi cares surprisingly little about what Sheba actually does. Her purpose is to look pretty and be the noose around Lalivero's neck. So long as the townspeople don't know about it, he doesn't even care if she sneaks out of her room."

"His thoughts are perhaps more disturbing. It's surprising the amount a century and a bit old man thinks..."

ShadowAngelBeta said:
No clue where to even start with that, but... eh- Hmm... Adepts are drawn together and the Xian are dragon hunters, wouldn't they be keeping an eye on Adepts with the knowledge that the Brood line and the four Ancient Tribes are intermingled? But then why not just exterminate Adepts altogether to make sure the lines were dead? Hmm... If they had a presence in Tolbi we would need to know their agenda and, more importantly, what we can believably make look like their agenda was.
"Don't make the mistake of presuming the Dragon Clan and the Adept Tribes were the same thing. The Dragon Clan predate Psynergy and even Alchemy. They say they claim direct descent from Ladon himself. It wouldn't be impossible for a Dragon Clan member to not be an adept."

"That said, just about every known one is an Adept."

"The Brood War was waged explicitly to wipe out the Dragon Clan. The only ones that were spared supposedly surrendered their powers, though as you can see, that wasn't all true."

ShadowAngelBeta said:
And Tolbi isn't an idiot, a Tyrannical Fool maybe, but not an idiot, he'd know enough to double check any plots, coverups, or framings. Which means we'd need to bury it further, probably also using something that's been long running against Tolbi as well.
"Babi has basically everyone either in his pocket or cowed by force. The only reason that he hasn't made any moves against the Xian is because it'd start a holy war. He's certainly been trying to work out how."

ShadowAngelBeta said:
Hmm... Are Dragons known for kidnapping Princesses in Weyward come to think of it? Runs into the issue of who might get blamed though, which Sheba is worried about with her home. Though somehow throwing the guilt at the feet at Xian and beating a hasty retreat could be... interesting.
"Oh, um..."

"Such fairie tales are just that, fairie tales. Though supposedly the Dragon of Izumo is known for something similar."

"We could make it real."

"How do you blame the Xian for it, though?"

ShadowAngelBeta said:
That's why I wanted to know if there was an envoy/warrior/etc. of the Xian in Tolbi keeping an eye on the local Tyrant. Its a bit hard to blame someone who isn't there or doesn't have a reason to be there.
"The silk road has many such envoys. Just about every caravan of silk has them."

"The Xian have little reason to stay in Tolbi. A dragon would be obvious come Colosso anyway."

ShadowAngelBeta said:
That being said... the way it was worded was that he doesn't care what Sheba does more or less as long as she doesn't go south to her home? Or was it as long as she doesn't leave his sphere of influence? And would that mean the town or the continent? It would be silly if she could just walk out of the town with us without him caring.
"Babi really wants his lighthouse. So long as Lalivero doesn't know Sheba has left, it might be possible to make a deal with him."

"Though we have to go to Lalivero to get to the Venus Lighthouse."

"Might be putting the cart before the horse there."

ShadowAngelBeta said:
On top of that though it might not be worth it. If he seriously thinks he can take super-kung fu, dragon-hunting monks and meaningfully conquer them then it might not be worth it, the point of setting them against each other would be to gut both of them. Lower Babi's reach and crush one of the greatest personal threats to ourself (and potentially some of our family and friends in Vale, but side benefits).
"The Xian, as worshippers in chief of the Goddess, would immediately call down the wrath of Gondowan and Indra onto Babi the moment he started that fight. It isn't a fight he can take yet."

"Imil would probably join in on top of that. The Goddess is still somewhat commonly worshipped up there."

ShadowAngelBeta said:
Though hopefully Babi will croak soon enough without Draught. Would be interesting if we make him collapse in the caves early with no one to save him.
"Huh? Cave?"

"Curious and curiouser."

"He usually vanishes a few days each month. Is that what you mean?"

ShadowAngelBeta said:
Sheba doesn't know about the Draught? I can buy him having the mental discipline needed to keep everything in order and certain thoughts covering others, but no one's perfect and he's had reason to worry about it lately.

Either way, eh I guess. Nothing to really exploit yet then. Most solid plan seems to involve having us, Karast, and Sheba tackle the Chimera perhaps. If that doesn't survive then we might be able to see about getting some advice from Jupiter adepts in Vale on proper control and kidnapping her on our way back through or something.

Hopefully as a party member instead of a prisoner, though that might depend on how badly the quest goes overall.
"There are many things Babi thinks about. Many unsavoury. Mind Read might be a window in, but there are ways to drown out what you find."

"Sheba's memory is also somewhat bad. Her head is full of thoughts, many she would rather not know. You shouldn't rely on it, since the amount of things she hears does make her memory worse."

"There is a reason she paints."

To Mask or not to Mask
"Fine, I'll save her myself." It was an easy decision to make in the end. There was no need to complicate it. Saturos' face twisted in far too many different ways, before finally, he sighed.

"Well, I suppose I should have expected that." He finally muttered. "Fine, I'll keep the Colosso situation to myself, then."

"You aren't going to strike first?"

"If you fail, well, its not like I can't just swoop in after you." Saturos answered dryly. "Good luck with the exhibition match. You'll need it, fighting a chimera."

He wasn't wrong. I bit my lip at that. Saturos was quite clear he wouldn't lift a finger to help, but I did still have some options. Saturos' oath brought him into conflict, but clearly his duty to save the world came before his oath to protect the Dragon Clan.

I wonder if that held true of Karst?

"Sheba is sorry she put you in this situation." I blinked at Ether's words, the Djinni resting on my head. She wasn't something Saturos could see. Even if he and I saw the world the same way, and had a mutual understanding, the same could not be said for him and Sheba.

So why could I see Ether then?

"Because there are two of us." Ether answered softly. "One of us must stay with Sheba, but otherwise there is no limit on who we can follow."

It was a curious situation, given that Sheba had two Djinni. How strong was she, that she could manifest two?

I wasn't sure I wanted to know.

"I don't suppose you could give me a hint or two?" I asked as we travelled back into Tolbi. Saturos just rolled his eyes.

"Well, don't turn into a dragon. There's one." He answered. "Two, fighting four heads at once is a recipe for disaster. You need to even your numbers."

"Without your help."

"Without my help. If the others decide to help, that's on them." Saturos answered. "Though I'd advise against just asking."

I could agree with that. Agatio'd say no to spite me, and Menardi was… well, we weren't exactly known to get along. There really was only one option. Karst.

Yet she was probably still off like me. Sea sickness didn't just go away the second one stepped onto land. In that case, the best way to even the odds would be to use three people. Myself was one, Karst was two.

Who could fill in for three? Sheba made the obvious, if hilariously dumb choice, but that would involve sneaking her out of the manor and, more importantly, back in without Babi noticing.

"... If I was trying to mask someone's voice-"

"Besides that wedding mask of yours?"

"Besides that wedding mask of mine."

"Got no clue. I'm guessing you're thinking of a girl, so a solid kick to the balls isn't going to work." Saturos retorted dryly. "I wouldn't suggest smoke inhalation. That tends to just kill."

"Well, was worth a shot."

"Just give whoever it is the mask. It's not like they know what it's for." Unfortunately, that wasn't really an option anymore. Sheba definitely knew what it was for now.

"Wedding mask?"

"Well, could be worse." I muttered, slipping my hands in my pockets. At least I had the beginnings of an idea.

"Oh. We need to leave within the next three days."

"... Wonderful."

"Not to rush you or anything, but if you haven't pulled this off tomorrow, I'm going ahead. I'd expect you to help out."

"If I'm not dead, sure." I wanted to groan, very loudly, at that one. Well, I couldn't blame Saturos. The sooner we got to Vault, the sooner we could have Alex lick our wounds. The longer we took, the more likely it was for our presence to get out, and he wasn't eager to deal with Dragon Hunters or the Vale finding out he was back.

They probably remembered him and Menardi from last time.

No, that was a later problem.

"What did he mean, wedding mask?" Ether asked. Mold pondered on my shoulder, before my nod coaxed him into answering.

"The Mask of the White Dragon is a ceremonial mask used by the Dragon Clan in their awakening rituals." He explained. "It's made so that it changes the owners voice. The mask is first made on the Day of Awakening, and given away the same day the Dragon Clan proposes. The White Dragon symbolizes Ladon, while the Black Dragon symbolizes Myria."

"Then girls make a black mask?"

"Yeah." It wasn't a subject I wanted to dwell too hard on. While I technically could make a second mask, one without the symbolism, it'd take too long and require I shed another reverse scale, and who knows when that would happen. It just wasn't a reliable solution. I suppose I could check tonight if mine was ready to shed, but it was such a long shot that I didn't think it was worth dwelling on.

"... Babi is leaving tomorrow afternoon."

"Huh?" I blinked, my voice vocalising aloud. "What do you mean, leaving tomorrow afternoon?"

"There's a cave he goes to every month. Tomorrow is when he intends to go. In the evening, specifically, when none of his servants and concubines are around to notice him leave. I think he expects someone to slay the chimera tomorrow."

"Felix?"

"One moment Saturos. Why does he go to a cave?"

"Why would Sheba know? She isn't omnipotent."

"She's a mind reader."

"She'd rather focus on anything but Babi's latest advance. Its easier to drown out if it's just background noise with the rest of Tolbi." Ether just huffed atop my head.

"... Can she check?"

"... Does she have to?"

"It might be important." Ether groaned and fell silent for a long moment.

"Something about a draught of life. The word Lemuria also came up. She can't make more sense of it, Babi is too busy enjoying himself in his hedonism." Ether answered.

"Draught of life." I muttered. It sounded like some sort of fairy tale. "Mean anything to you, Saturos?"

"Not on its own, no. There were some stories of dragon blood making one immortal as an elixir of life, but I think they are pretty definitively disproven." He answered. "Anything else?"

"Just Lemuria. I presume that relates to the Lemurians."

"Well, they said that Lemurians were immortal and so chose to pass beyond the veil of the sea." Saturos answered. "Like how the immortal Anemos chose to ascend past the aurora of the clouds. It might have something to do with them, or it might be an old mans delusions. Babi is supposedly over a century old."

"He is."

"Apparently he is over a century old." Saturos paused, pursing his lips.

"That would make the idea of him being immortal due to some elixir credible. Maybe he stores it in some cave?"

"Thinking of ransacking it?"

"If it grants youth, it probably has some sort of healing property." Saturos admitted. "Might be worth having a look into."

"He's going tomorrow afternoon." Maybe Saturos would take the opportunity with Agatio and get out of my hair. Saturos pondered it for a long moment, before his lips cracked into a grin.

"You devious bastard."

"I didn't do anything."

"Keep telling yourself that, Felix." Saturos retorted. "Fine. I'll keep Agatio and Menardi out of your hair. Ask your girl where this cave is."

"It's in the Altmiller Range to the Northeast. Follow the Bright Tolbi River to the west, and take the first fork north. The cave will be past the forest glade, you can't miss it."

I just grinned as I relayed the instructions. The pieces were falling into place to make this work. I now had some time, Saturos was likely to delay his exhibition match until after he was sure they had recovered from the cave.

The next step was the harder one. I had to get Karst on side.

Our inn, as it turned out, was in the main fountain square. Agatio had a large sack beside him as we walked towards the inn. Menardi wasn't outside, nor was Karst.

"Took your sweet time." Agatio noted, pointing at a sign of a swan. "Silver Swan. Apparently the cheapest inn on the street."

"I hope that means it cost less then an arm and a leg." Saturos snipped. Agatio nodded.

"Seven gold total. Its not much more then a room and some beds, but it'll do. We have privacy to talk. No inn food though."

"Why not?"

"Karst figured you'd rather keep the extra four gold."

"That is expensive." I whistled. "Are people here made of coin?"

"Their love of gold and silver betrays the debauchery of this town." Agatio answered with a shrug. "Not like there isn't plenty of entertainment here. Bars, casinos, whorehouses, that arena. A warrior could gorge themself on this place."

I could feel Ether shivering in my hair at that. Saturos just nodded, waving me on.

"Go on, I need to make some plans with Agatio." He declared. "Send Menardi my way, would you?"

"I know that look. We're splitting up?" Agatio asked. Saturos nodded.

"Briefly. We have two goals and its more efficient to achieve them separately." I blinked at Saturos' words. He had taken it as a given I'd won already. Was his faith in me really so high? "We found an interesting cave with an interesting treasure up north. I'm ransacking it."

"And Felix?"

"Might have solved our Adept problem. Two birds, two stones. We're better tackling this apart." Saturos answered. I didn't look at the gift horse in the mouth. I walked into the inn.

"Second floor. Room 7." Agatio called. I waved my thanks as I walked through the doors.

"He scares us."

"Agatio?"

"Yes. His mind is chaos. Sheba thinks its deliberate."

"With his pride in being a warrior, maybe he has studied such things."

"No. People are orderly in their minds. The order might not be coherent or even comprehensible, but there is an order there. His mind feels like a whirlpool that is burning through the night sky."

That was a hell of a description.

"Sheba has a painting of it if you'd like to see."

"I'm fine." I waved at the innkeeper, and made my way to the second floor. There was definitely some sort of bar attached to the inn. I could smell the ale and hear the celebrating from here. What there was to celebrate, I wasn't quite sure.

Room 7 wasn't hard to find. I knocked five times.

"Only you knock five times." Menardi declared as she opened the door. "Felix. Where is Saturos?"

"Outside. He wants a word. There's a cave to plunder." I answered. Menardi regarded me suspiciously, before nodding.

"Karst has Tornado Lizard Blood. They say it helps with sea sickness." Menardi stated. "I'll be back." I was glad she left without a fuss, though Karst just gave me the evil eye.

"You know, she thinks we're having a rendezvous." I blinked at that. Karst said it with such a straight face that I was sure she wasn't lying, as she hurled a bottle my way.

"Why would she think that?"

"Because she is a hopeless romantic at heart. Gods kill me when she finds out that I have a boyfriend." Karst retorted. "If I still have one at the end of this trip. Ugh."

"Well, how did it taste?"

"Like death. Then again, you might like it. I've seen you gulp down worse."

"As a human?"

"As a dragon."

"Dragons don't have a sense of taste." I crinkled my nose. This was certain to be nasty. "Well, bottoms up."

"Hah." Her laughter rang in my ears as the acrid, almost certainly poisonous shit ichor went down my throat, leaving me coughing, spluttering, and desperately trying to hurl it back up. "Wow, that was a poor reaction."

"It's also not blood." I shot back. "Its minced marrow. That is vile."

"Well, they say Tornado Lizards are one of the few things that prey on humans. Guess we know its true now." Karst laughed. "Alright, spill. What happened?"

"In what sense?"

"You're smiling. Something happened." Karst retorted. "Did you find a princess?"

"Close enough." I answered. "A Jupiter Adept. Her name is Sheba. She's being held prisoner by Babi in the mansion."

"Our mystery hostage from the villages then." Karst noted. "The one that has been trying to read our minds?"

"Oi, Sheba isn't trying to do it! It just happens!"

"She takes offence to that." I noted. Karst just stared for a long moment.

"She isn't here with us, is she?"

"Her Djinni is." Karst nodded at that, leaning back on her bed. "I promised to set her free."

"And how, exactly, do you plan to do that?" Karst asked. Her face suddenly fell. "Felix, those stories of dragons stealing princesses are meant to be just that."

"No kidnapping." I retorted. "Not yet, anyway. The king is holding an exhibition match in the Colosso. The winner gets a boon. I'm going to use it to force him to release Sheba."

"It's a boon, Felix. He doesn't have to do it."

"Sheba is only useful to him if her hometown doesn't know she's gone." I shot back. "Actually, if he's smart about it, her not being here is actually better for him. It means even if they get uppity, there's no hope of her getting stolen back."

"He can't lose his leverage." Karst muttered. "This is oddly roundabout."

"Well…"

"What's the catch?"

"I have to kill a chimera. Saturos won't help." I answered. "It's too dangerous to risk the groups resources when we have an alternative." Karst's face rapidly turned green at that.

"He means to… That's…"

"I don't think he was seriously considering it. I sorta get where he's coming from. The Vale will almost certainly go badly."

"We aren't in that much of a rush, are we?"

"Delays pile up. We're already here a few days waiting on us." I noted softly.

"You aren't meant to agree with him, Felix."

"I'm not. However, I also see where he's coming from. He won't stop us from just winning and getting our Adept, but he won't help us either."

"Sheba objects. She's not a prize."

"Sheba doesn't get to object. It's her ticket out of that manor." I shot back to Ether. "We just have to kill a chimera and we get our prize. With the prize we can force Babi to set Sheba free."

"And if it doesn't work?"

"I suppose I kidnap a princess." I answered with a stupid grin. "The bigger problem is the chimera."

"I don't know how you expect the two of us to kill it. I'd be surprised if you can swing your sword straight and I'm not much better."

"Well… I had an idea. How difficult is it to disguise a girls voice?" Karst just stared for a long moment.

"I need a drink. You intend for her to win her own freedom?"

"We could use the spare pair of hands."

"Well, good luck with that. Masking a voice isn't that easy Felix. I don't know of anything that does it except your Mask of the-"

"I'm not proposing to her."

"Then we're shit outta luck there. Can't we just dress her up and have her not talk?"

"Um…"

"No. Gladiators have to announce themselves. Its part of the show." Ether spoke up. "It's because one tried to assassinate Babi years ago."

"No luck. We have to announce ourselves." I muttered. "Shit."

"Shit indeed. We don't have a lot of options. I'd say give her the mask."

"I'm not proposing to her."

"Then modify it. Make it a Mask of the Black Dragon." Karst rolled her eyes. "It'd take you like half an hour."

"We need that mask for the Vale. If they recognise me-"

"We need that mask right now, Felix." Karst retorted, her Djinni flashing into existence on her head. "Take your pick, Felix. Is it now or later?"
