366 DAYS OF MADNESS: a worst-case 2020

366 Days of Madness seeks to answer one question, and one question only: "how bad could one year possibly get?"

Quite a lot, actually.

As with the original 2020: Shots Fired, this timeline contains bigotry of many different kinds, primarily from the far-right. Discretion is strongly advised.

366 DAYS OF MADNESS
or, how I learned to start worrying and hate 2020
a "worst-case scenario" 2020, by shearsforest

Way back in June of 2023, I had the idea of making one particular year as fucked up as possible — while still remaining within the realm of plausibility. Immediately, 2020 came to mind; not only is it known for being an absolute dumpster-fire of a year, but it's the subject of 2020: Shots Fired, an extensive scenario by @Dab master, which goes into great detail about how just a few tweaks end up sending that godforsaken year careening down a vastly-deeper spiral into madness. Admittedly, I must've stumbled upon it after the brilliant 2020: Brave New Century fusion timeline by @Mister Anemone.

The task then became to append my own plotlines, characters, and ideas onto Shots Fired, creating what I consider my first proper "timeline":
366 Days of Madness. While I'm proud of it for a lot of reasons, I don't see it as my best work — with the benefit of hindsight, not only were major portions of it too derivative of Shots Fired (a fatal flaw I've sought to remedy in my current works), but it didn't completely fulfill the "take an event and see just how bad it could be" premise that drove not just the original 2020: Shots Fired, but the other timelines this will take inspiration from — A Very Bad Year (1973) among them.

This is my attempt at revising not only the original version of 366 Days, but also 2020: Shots Fired — into a timeline of truly apocalyptic proportions. I hope all of you will enjoy this foray into mania.

Welcome to
366 Days of Madness.

GOOD MORNING AMERICA

Now, we actually have a very special guest this morning — Quinn Richards, political analyst, author of the recently-released New York Times bestseller "America Needs Change", host of the "Sober Second Thought" online talk-show, and now, America's newest candidate vying for the position of President. (clapping) Ms. Richards, welcome to the program.
- Hello! It's so nice to be here!
Morning to you too. Now, what's this America Needs Change book about, for those in the audience who don't know? It's a nice book, I've read it, but is there anything in it that appeals to the millions of Americans watching this show right now?
- Right. America Needs Change — it's this essay-slash-rant of mine about the pitfalls of American democracy nowadays, and how to improve it for the decade to come. Because... let's be honest. It's gonna be a real horrible decade.
How so?
- For one: political violence, the likes of which you've never seen before, and the kind of chaos you only see, say, in-in '70s Italy, or even '70s Northern Ireland. You've heard of these groups. Atomwaffen, the Patriot Front, Oath Keepers, the Base...
Mhm...?
- They're rising up because nobody's really taking this threat seriously. Not even the President, who has the authority — you know — to even just say anything, speak out about these groups. He didn't do it for Charlottesville, Unite the Right. For any of the school shootings we've faced in the past few years.
Can agree. And as we mentioned earlier, you're campaigning for the presidency, right?
- Yeah. I'm not the person most people think of when they imagine "presidents-to-be": they think senators, congressmen and congresswomen. People with a blatantly obvious headstart.
Yep.
- Well, I'd like to point out our current President, who also had no political positions prior to his presidency, apart from maybe his multiple campaigns over the years. But... let's be honest. He doesn't represent most of us. Neither do many of the candidates in next year's Democratic primaries! They have hundreds of millions of dollars shelled out for their campaigns. But they're all trying out one thing — capturing the will of the people — and who can do that better than somebody who they can actually relate to?
I do have to say — that's their purpose, isn't it? To relate to people?
- That's the thing. I trust that most people watching this interview right now aren't old white dudes — you're regular people, many of you. Working to make ends meet. Can I- C-can I?
Go ahead.
- Alright. (stares at camera) America needs a candidate who it feels can represent the majority of them. Not the people who are pretty old and rich already — that's not you. You need a better option. You need change. America needs change. And I'm here to deliver it.

FOOTNOTES
* the two effective PoDs of the original 2020: Shots Fired are 1) John Bolton not being fired, and 2) Trump's violation of the Emoluments Clause(s?) being brought to light earlier in his presidency — both contributing to his erratic behavior. The first is discarded here out of plausibility (Trump and Bolton had had many disagreements prior to his firing), while the latter takes advantage of the existing Blumenthal v. Trump case.
** inspirations for the following include:
+ Quinn Richards is a fusion of numerous characters: the character of the same name from my Neither Red, Neither Blue scenario, Rachel Maddow from @Hal Jordan's Upon a Cross of Trumpism, the Morrigan (i.e. "Q") from his The People's Revolution, as well as the real-life campaigns and careers of Joe Scarborough, Elizabeth Warren, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
+ the assassination of Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Cornel West is a vastly-expanded take on Sanders' assassination in @Dab master's 2020: Shots Fired.

JANUARY 1, 2020
NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT

[N. HERNANDEZ] God, I've been awake for the last, what, three-quarter hours? I've... I've been thinking what to do for this New Year, and I've been looking back on something Dan told me a while back. Thanksgiving dinner last year.

Alright. That something was that I'm, supposed to be, uh... starting this new vlog series or whatever. (shrugs) Don't know who's gonna end up seeing this other than myself... maaaybe some of my very lucky close friends, but... yeah. Um... new year, new me, I guess. I've... (chuckles) I've gotta do work on that, I presume.

Part of the reason I've decided to pick up this old kinda video diary idea is because... y'know... I've been feeling kinda in-the-dumps lately. Might be from eating fast food all the damn time, a quick bite of McDonalds every day after getting back to my home from the office. They say it's not good for the health. I felt kinda queasy after eating some at the New Year's party a few hours ago, and trust me, it's not fun.

It's also kinda a self-dare in a sense. I've wanted to see what would happen if I were to really spend some time improving myself, for a change. Not just seeing other people do it on Instagram. Something to spice up my boring life, y'know? Huh. Well... (sigh) I'll see you at the gym in a bit. Day one, three-sixty-six days of fitness. That... that's too milquetoast for me. Three-sixty-six... (pause) um... what... what trendy words do they use now?

Three-sixty-six days fitness challenge.

Three-sixty-six... who am I kidding, this is gonna be hard.

Yeah. (chuckles) I know, right? This is gonna be day one... three-sixty-six days of madness.

JANUARY 14, 2020
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA

The debates later tonight sure would be interesting, Mervan thought to himself, as he slowly pulled into the gas station for another fill-up on his way home from work. The sun had dipped below the horizon, though its glow bathed the sky in a fiery shade of orange. As if the clouds themselves were burning. Mervan's mood, too, felt like it was burning up. He had seen it all on Twitter, the hatred expressed towards anyone who looked remotely Arab, all those ignorant schmucks who thought he, a second-generation immigrant from Turkey, had had anything to do with the sinking of the USS Ronald Reagan.

Too many to count. He opted to filter them out instead. He let the thoughts of anger fizzle out of his mind as he stopped the car, noticing the traffic ahead. There were a ton of cars in front of him. Huh. Weird. But not out of the blue, Mervan reminded himself. He felt it deeply within, the sense of urgency felt by these other folks. It's simple geopolitics: something bad goes down in the Middle East, like, say, impending war between America and Iran, and you can never be too sure about oil prices afterwards.

The numbers on the sign probably would be much higher in the next few weeks.

Bored of the music on the radio — some pop piece by Lewis Capaldi — he tuned his car radio onto another channel. Maybe some news would help ease the ennui, even if the ton of negative crap lately didn't really help his mood at all. Apparently, some Boeing pilot goofed all the way down in LA, dumping some jet fuel onto a bunch of students across a bunch of schools. Oh, well. The line of vehicles ahead continued to inch forward, ever so slowly bringing Mervan towards the gas pump... one step closer to home. He kept listening to the radio. More news about that damned viral Dallas shooting. The sight was burnt in his mind; that morning, he briefly caught a glimpse of that stream the shooter made while scrolling through his feed, yet even then, it was enough to remain in his head.

A question once again bounced within him, once again as fresh as hours ago when he watched that accursed clip.

What makes these people so radicalized? Be it the ceaseless alt-right discussion about trans communist Arabs bombing the USS Ronald Reagan from within, or everyone on Twitter fighting like dogs over Bernie getting shot back in January. Mervan didn't get it, but that feeling of confusion felt mildly suffocating nonetheless. People hated him for no rational reason whatsoever.

Surely, the fresh and cool breeze outside would give me some relief, he thought to himself. He rolled down the car window, and peeked outside. In the lane across him was some younger kid, maybe in his 20's, just blankly staring ahead. For a brief moment, Mervan put himself in the kid's place. What was he worrying about? Was it the racism? Was it the gas prices? Was it his own future? Was it the chance of this war forcing him and Mervan, potentially, onto a battleground a couple thousand miles away? Mervan... couldn't really tell. All he did was just gaze as blankly as the kid did.

Can't judge a book by its cover, Mervan thought. Can't judge.

Can't judge.

Nice seeing this TL here in this site.

But what it is actually nice in the redo of 2020:SF's storyline is that you managed to replace Richard Spencer, who have become some sort of an political mercenary nowadays, into an appropriate conservative figure instead.

I really love the style of primarily headlines with little snippets in between. Works quite well for a timeline like this where you're trying to pack so much stuff into one (relatively) short time frame.

Haven't finished reading yet but the format and color scheme is pure culinary. Very pleasing to read. Keep it up!

As a side note, you wouldn't have happened to have read 17776 before, have you? The dialog colors remind me of it.

I know about it, but I haven't actually read it — I just opted to make the dialogue colors a bit more colorful to compensate for the lack of images in this version of 366 Days.

Just realized I didn't include a "vignette" for part two — I've been thinking about having Natalia's video diaries alternating with other perspectives throughout.

Currently, what I have in mind is a short bit about either a civilian's perspective on Trump declaring war on Iran, maybe even a protester, or perhaps some higher-up in Trump's orbit. Gas prices will almost certainly be the topic; it's perhaps the clearest effect of the Iran War on regular consumers.

Another word: I won't be taking as much inspiration from Millennium Challenge 2002 for the initial stage of the Iran War in 366, given the controversies over its accuracy in recent years.

As promised, the vignette for part 2 has been added — I am now about 40% of the way through the next chapter, Totally Under Control.

Following some feedback from AH.com, I've elected to retcon events a bit; Bernie Sanders survives the December attempt on his life, as in @Pstar77's fusion timeline The Shots That Lit the Fires (AH.com-exclusive), only dying some time later from unrelated causes. This makes things somewhat different from Shots Fired too.

Another update: I have since stumbled upon the amazing resource that is The Week, a news website and surprisingly-ripe repository of US-centric news events for every day in 2020. I'll be reworking 366 with these events in mind, as well as some complementary events from the New Potomac timeline Backs Against the Wall; be aware that the next chapter is 60% done.

Considering the theme of the year and the distinct lack of mentions of COVID, I'm guessing that all the chaos so far has left it ignored and it will announce its arrival outside China far more dramatically; perhaps akin to all the most hysterical of layman worst case projections?

COVID's coming along just as quickly as in OTL, but it's only bubbling up in the background right now.

Currently, everyone's preoccupied with a smallpox outbreak in Russia — something that will reveal itself more in the next few updates, alongside an unexpectedly-infectious strain of antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis.

Is the timeline canceled or just delayed?
I've been working on a bunch of stuff on and off AH.com — I've decided to only upload part 3 here once I properly finish it on AH.com. In the meantime, I've been focusing my attention on my other main scenario We Shall Overcome, so feel free to visit that one if you wish.
