Japan breathes. And you breathe alongside it. In this world, Youkai run rampant and cause chaos. You are one of those beings, back in the Edo period on ancient Japan...A time of peace is upon you, but peace is never eternal.
You are someone who can make the difference, for better or for worse. Change Japan, gather allies, gain experience, and defeat the world's evils...Or the world's justice.
Those are the things that catch your eye as you stare into the night sky. One after another, followed by a little trail of fire going into the sky, they explode in multicolored colors. Red, blue, yellow...They all make you stare at it with absolute wonder.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom...
"They're...So pretty..." You mutter out, reaching out a hand to try and grab them- But, unfortunately for you, no matter how hard you try and reach to the sky, the lights don't reach your tiny hands. You try more and more, worried they'll go away and you won't be able to catch one of those sparkling lights...But, you can't. You aren't big enough. Or maybe you're just not fast enough. Or maybe...You're not strong enough to catch those lights.
A hand holds your own, followed by a slight chuckle.
"Little moon, you can try as you may, but you won't be able to catch those lights."
You turn your head around, as you turn face to face to a beautiful woman with smooth, white skin, and long, flowing brown hair reaching to her knees. Using traditional clothes for the festival, a mix of white and red with wavering patterns, and a fox mask to the side of her head.
"But...Mom...I want to give them to you!"
...The woman smiles, as she chuckles once more, this time picking you up and holding you up, giving you an even better view of the light show. It was already hard to see, with all the adults around you...But with her holding you up...You have a view of the entire thing, now. You smile widely, letting out a 'woah!' and try to reach the lights once more, but once again, the result is the same, and despite light hitting your skin, your hands are still empty.
"Do you know why you can't reach the lights, little moon?"
You look at her face, and you shake your head quietly.
"It's because they're sparkling so much, they're working so much to look beautiful...If you picked them up, you'd certainly disrupt their flow!" Smiling, the woman then pinches your cheek, and letting out a little 'aaargh' in return to such gesture, she grins at you, giving a kiss on your forehead. "Besides, you're already my beautiful little light. I don't need anymore."
...You chuckle, wrapping your arms around your mom as you gave her a kiss of your own. Various other adults walked around you, holding their children with them, some younger than you, some older than you...And someway older than you. They all used clothes similar to you and your mom's, all with different masks in their faces. You don't have one, something about you being too young, or maybe not ready...But still, every once in awhile, to see people come together like this...It always makes your heart warm up.
It also gives you an excuse to try out the different snacks!
For a moment, you just stare in silence at the spectacle occurring just above your head.
"Little moon..."
You turn your head to look at her.
"Yes, mommy?"
The woman frowns for a moment, before smiling again.
"You know why we celebrate this festival, yes?" ...You slowly shake your head. You've been to this place ever since you were a little toddler...But you never understood the purpose of it.
Your mom sighs, before looking up at the sky once more.
"We celebrate this festival to celebrate life and death," With a gentle tone, she starts caressing your head, looking up at the sky as you stare at her face. "To celebrate the life of our ancestors, and their deaths. The thing they did to this nation...And the things their descendants will do to protect it. Warriors kissed by moonlight and sunlight, people will always defeat evil, and maintain the balance of our world..."
Turning her head to you, she smiles again. "Don't ever forget, little moon. No matter what people say, no matter how much they hate Yōkai...Without them, we wouldn't be here."
Chewing in your fingernail, you ask her a small question.
[ ] "...Is this why we hide?" (Yōkai Origin)
[ ] "...Is this why you married papa?" (Half-Yōkai Origin)
[ ] "...Is this why we're safe?" (Human Origin)
"Yes," She responded with calm, whispering softly to your ear. "The creatures shape this land. Humans maneuver and work around those shapes...It's a struggle to survive on both sides...In the end, there's no bad human, there's no bad Yōkai. They're just that, in the end...People."
You tilt your head, seemingly confused. "But...I thought Yōkai were monsters-?"
Your mom chuckles, shaking her head. "Monsters or not, they're still smart creatures. They're people just like us, little moon."
You shrug and continue looking up.
"You know...For a boy your age, you're getting awfully big. Soon soon, you'll pick out what you'll be." Your mother says, smiling at you. "So...What will you be, little moon?"

"Is that so?" She answers with a bit of a surprised smile. "Yes...With how smart you are, I'm sure you'll become someone great in no time."
You eagerly nod your head, clearly showing her your resolve, before continuing. "Yeah, yeah! I'll make sure...I'll make sure everyone in Japan knows my name! I'll make sure everyone knows the name of...!"

...Okay so, I know everyone has a lot of questions. Mostly about the Medaka Box Quest.
I abandoned it. At least on this site. It was a dumb idea, to write the same Quest in two different sites at the same time, and it was going to be a lot of work, and there'd be Metagaming involved, of course. So I decided to make a new one on this site. I mostly use SpaceBattles, but I decided to use SV since it's a nice change of pace.
Also, yes, you are a boy. The reason I didn't let you pick a gender will be explained in the story soon.
Again, if anyone wants to follow the MB quest, it's on SpaceBattles. For now, enjoy this one, yeah?

NajimiSasaki:
Your mother, as well as a 4 tailed Kitsune who has been trained you and your skills ever since your birth. She sometimes calls you 'little moon', and despite her rough demeanor, she is a happy and well-natured woman, at least for a Youkai.
You two currently live together in a little house in the woods, near a city called Mitsukaze. Life is peaceful, despite it being only you two so far.
Like a passing breeze, that voice goes through your ears, reverbing in your entire corpse, keeping you at a deep and silent calm. You felt yourself slowly drifting away into this calming darkness. The feeling was like falling asleep on top of a boat in a passing river. No rain, no snow, nothing. Just the wind and the river below you.
"Aki-kun...!"
...Though, if you may say, this gentle voice is raising its tone a bit too much. Your eyebrow twitches slightly, but you quickly roll over and try to ignore it.
"Aki-kun!"
...Jeez...Annoying and...Loud...Just let it give you peace, please! At this point, it's like the river is getting rougher and rougher, and you can feel yourself bumping into rocks all of the sudden, and at this point, it's like the water is hitting on your skin annoyingly...
G r o a n.
You close your eyes a bit more tightly this time, your eyebrows twitching even more. Heavens, it's still there. And it's getting louder and louder. At first, it was like it was just a sweet whispering voice in the wind, but now it feels more like a cricket singing literally right next in your ear.
...For a moment, you can suddenly hear silence, and the voice suddenly disappears.
You breathe through your nose proudly. Success. Ignoring it was the right option, after all! The river once more becomes calm and peaceful, and the waters are relaxing to hear to. The boat is stable, and all the water who fell in your body is like its suddenly gone, evaporated all of the sudden. You put your hand under your head and slowly feel yourself drifting away into this calm darkness once more...
Ah~ This is the life--
"AKIHITO SASAKI! WHEN I TELL FOR YOU TO WAKE UP, YOU WAKE UP!"
--Geh?!
It all ends in an instant. You're no longer in that calming river, no longer in that calming boat, in those calming waters. Right now, you feel as if you're falling out of a goddamn waterfall! You let out a yelp, as you suddenly feel yourself falling, and falling, deeper into this waterfall, with only the chorus of your screams and the echo of the thunder-like voice in the background, you fall, and...
Slam!
...Oooooow.
"...Sorry, ma..."
...With your face planted down in the ground, your voice is short of a muffled scream. Your face is hurting, and you're pretty sure you're tasting wood at the moment.
"- Jeez, what's with you? I thought your hearing was better than that! Clean your ears, boy!" The voice of the powerful figure known as your mother yells out in the distance, as you finally take the effort to pull yourself up, your nose still a little sore, and feeling like giving out a snooze. "Come! Breakfast is ready! If I have to call you one more time, I'm feeding it to the wolves!"
...G r o a n.
"I'm coming, I'm coming...!" Dusting yourself off, you are quick to look for your wardrobe. Your room is...Small. Only being a few meters wide. There's a small, closed window giving out to the outside, where small snowflakes hit gently against the glass. A small futon is by your side, a bit too small for you, but who was never really failed you at giving you a proper's night sleep. A wardrobe is next to you, full of various outfits. Sleep outfits, bath outfits, Yukatas, Kimonos, and other variants of it. Aside from that...Not much is on your own, despite...
Oh, right. Right up in your bed, there's a wooden bow and a single arrow, lined up perfectly between one another, in an X shape.
...Now, it is pretty dangerous to sleep with an arrow, principally one with metal on the tip at night, but, given your nature, you'd be fine~!
...Maybe.
Probably.
Most likely (not.)
Bah, no matter. Quickly getting to your wardrobe, you pull out an Awase Kimono, one with...
...In it, and quickly change it from your current outfit. It's way less comfy, but it's meant to keep you safe and warm during winter, even though you're pretty sure you'd survive even the coldest winters, thanks to your Youkai genes!
"Right, I'm coming!" You yell out once more, a bit more lively this time, as you pull open the door of your room, and make your way to the kitchen.
Your house is...Small. Very, very small. That mostly comes due to the fact you live up in a more wooded area of the valley you live on- As well as you and your mother not having that much money in the first place. Turns out being a man-eating Youkai does that to you, unfortunately. Still, it's better than nothing, and at the very least you have a roof to sleep under...
Your steps fill the house, and you can hear the sound of someone putting things down in the kotatsu, and the soft smell of rice filling your lungs...And, not much after, you find yourself face-to-face with 'the being known as your mother.' Namiji Sasaki. She was...Already sitting down, and had a slightly tired expression on her face. She...Didn't seem angry. She just seemed...Disappointed.
"Aki-kun..."
"-Gah, I know, I know, I overslept, sorry about that, I, uh..." You try and come up with a good excuse as to why you did that, but most of them involve staying up a bit late, as well as just being tired.
Namiji sighed, putting a hand to her cheek, and looking at you- Before pointing her eating utensils at you. "...Aki-kun, you forgot to hide away your form again."
...Huh?
You blink, and...You quickly put a hand in your head, feeling...Something. Something that normally wasn't there for humans. Ah, right, those...!
[ ] ...Fox Ears.
The Kitsune are quiet and mischievous creatures. Master of illusions and trickery, they are known for luring in adventurers to their doom by their shape-shifting abilities. Each one of their tails, going up to 9 represents how strong one is, as well as their social status. Each tail being a recipient of pure magical energy...One is able to harden its tail and use it as a weapon if they concentrate hard enough. Though, out of all of them, Kitsune are probably the most human-like Youkai, with some even living inside villages for years without being found out...
[ ] ...Horns.
The Oni are warriors. Demons. Bloodthirsty beasts. The Oni are possibly the most feral out of all the Youkai, with their strength being higher than many, and a fully matured one having skin as hard as steel. They can lift twice their own size, and some are even capable of reaching the height of buildings and castles, at their strongest. Though, they are an endangered species, being the most hunted due to their ferocity. And having the need to consume much more meat than any other Youkai.
[ ] ...Cat ears.
The Nekomata are sly creatures. They are charming, and generally curious beasts. Their cat-like agility and reflexes make them fast and agile, being able to traverse rough terrains easily. Their claws are also rather sharp, and can easily tear down a normal human by slashing their neck open. They are tolerated by most humans, due to their lack of a need to constantly consume human flesh. Though no Nekomata shows their true form for no reason...
[ ] ...A little black feather.
The Tengus are fierce creatures. Warriors at heart, with the belief war is constant. They travel alone, but younger Tengus are known for travelling in groups. They are dangerous to any traveler due to their skills in battle, being able to wield most weapons with effectiveness. Their ability to fly gives them higher mobility, though due to their heavy size, Tengus aren't able to fly for long, with younger ones only being able to glide through the air for a few minutes. They aren't fond of each other most of the time, but they won't attack a member of another race for no reason. Though there are other variants of Tengu around...Not all of them being avian in nature.
[ ] ...Wolf ears.
Japanese wolves are one of the most common types of Youkai. They have a short temper, and generally, are very leaderly. Their bite is one that can rip someone's arm off in a single strike, and their strength, while not exceptional, is no joke either. They mostly travel in groups, with groupless wolfes being subject to ridicule and pity, in some cases. Though they are are also easily one of the most hunted, mostly due to the fact they are often hunted for their skin, like any other wolf.
[ ] ...Raccoon ears.
The Tanuki are the most accepted youkai between humans. Known as being traders, Tanuki are very charismatic, and some often live in cities, running their own shops. They aren't warriors at heart but can be dangerous beings if given the right tools to create spells or other objects. They also are omnivores, meaning they don't eat humans at all. Well, most of the time, that is.

Your vulpine ears twitched a little bit as you passed your hand through them, and you could feel them lowering themselves down due to your mom's sudden interruption. Your tail suddenly hides between your legs, as little blush came across your face in embarrassment, and...You quickly lower your ears, and then, it...Almost is like they fuse down and hide between your hair, acting as if it's nothing there. Your tail twirls and disappears like a snake going down your pants, and, soon, you're once more in your regular appearance, that being of....

[Write-in image, or write-in appearance?]
Gained Youkai Strength D-
- You're stronger than the average human. You're able to crush a small child's head with relative effort.
Gained Shapeshifting F--
- You're able to change your appearance to look like a human.
Gained Keen Senses D
- You're able to smell and hear better than any common man, but you need to be in true form to do so.
Gained Low Night Vision F
- You're able to see 5 feet ahead of you in the night.
Gained Minor Illusions F---
- You can create small illusions that fit in the palm of your hand, that don't require any energy.
Your mom lets out a little sigh from her mouth, moving her head back and forth as she watches you transform to a more humane appearance. Twirling her chopsticks around, she finally speaks to you. "Your illusions are getting sloppy, Aki-kun." She muses, grabbing a mouthful of rice from her plate and slowly munching it. "...You're not even able to maintain them during your sleep. That'll be troublesome if someone finds you out, you know."
You frown. It's been a few years since you started to train your natural Youkai abilities with your mom, and ever since then...You've been able to evolve, albeit slowly. Your mother is a relatively powerful fox youkai, one with four tails. Four tailed foxes are a bit rare, although not as rare as foxes with more tails. She'd be a relatively well-respected member because of it...If only there was any other foxes around.
Fox society revolves around that, your status is represented by how many tails you have. You can only dream of achieving two or more tails, but for your knowledge...Right now, you'd be considered something of an infant with your one, singular tail, despite the fact you're close to being 18 soon. Of course, tails are achieved through training your strength, or if lady 'Inari' sees you as somehow worthy of getting another one...
Choose your being:
[ ] You wish you had another tail. It would be cool to see others respecting you because of it!
[ ] You frankly don't care about having another tail. At the end of the day, you're still yourself, one-tailed or not.
[ ] You WILL get another tail if it's the last thing you do!
[ ] You really don't wanna get another tail...It sounds difficult...
[ ] Eh, who knows. If you get another tail or not, you won't make a big deal outta it!
[ ] Write-in?
"I try," Is your rather simple answer. You don't wish to start a discussion with your mother over whether or not you've been working hard or not so early in the morning, so, you simply sit down in the little kotatsu- Already feeling the warmth and comfort of it that is impossible to not love, and let out a long sigh.
You clap your hands together.
"Thank you for the meal."
...And, with that, you start eating the meal...
Choose your being, again!
[ ] Quickly! Even if it's just rice, it's still good stuff!
[ ] Normally. You have some manners.
[ ] Elegantly. You try and be respectable during lunch breaks.
Your mother continues to eat as usual. You assume you took a little longer than usual to wake up today, given she's already eating, which, in your defense, is...Probably fair. You are a grown man, and soon, you'll be an 'adult' in human years, and as such, you tend to sleep a lot more, whether it be because of your metabolism or something else entirely.
"Aki-kun," Your mother says, eating slooowly her food as if making time to talk to you specifically. "Will you visit the town again today?"
...Ah, yeah, Matsukaze, the little town you and your mom 'live' in. You have been in this town for as long as you can remember, it is located a few ways south of Aomori, and, despite its population only being of 500 people or so, it is a pretty lively town, with events every year, and the people usually being kind. Granted...That's only probably because they don't quite know you're a fox, but still, everyone in Matsukaze is fine people, at least in the eyes of your mother.
You get the drill, choose your being!
[ ] You want to leave this town, and go to bigger places!
-[ ] Write-in where? (Optional)
[ ] You're completely fine with this town. You're quite content with it.
[ ] It's a fine enough place, you suppose!
"Well..." You answer, scratching your cheek. "Maybe. We still have fresh wood to sell, right?"
Your mother, despite not really having a constant job, occasionally does small favors to the townspeople or such, taking care of someone who's sick, cleaning up stores, and cooking some meals in big events and such. You, on the other hand, generally stay home while she's out, not really getting out of your little home in the middle of the woods. Mostly because, well, someone needs to take care of the house. During the wintery sessions...You go out and, ah, sell wood.
...It's not the finest job in the world, but at least it gets you safe. Turns out living in the woods does have some pros.
"We do, I prepared a fresh bash for you to take today." She answers, mentioning over to the side, where next to the door, a little straw basket stood, with a lot of wood inside of it. Normally someone would have a tough time with that...But thankfully, you are strong enough to carry quite a lot of it.
"Eeeh..." You say, and, frankly...It's a bit painful to go out there in this cold. While you do have some fur, it's not really there in your human appearance, and to become a fox and carry a basket is impossible in both cases.
...Namiji looks at you with a tough eye. You woke up late, and still are questioning over whether or not you'll go out or not?
...What you're doing is dangerous, here. Pick your answer carefully...
[ ] "Fine, I'll go..."
[ ] "Just gimme a few minutes, I have to do something."

With a little sip of your tea, you stare at your mom as she looks at you quite intently. That glare is quite scary, but...You're used to it, at this point. You simply smile at her, and, after putting your cup down, you wave your hand at her, as if defusing this little situation. "Don't worry, I'll definitely go. It's my job as the son, after all." You inform, and, staring at you a little bit more, your mom lets out a little sigh, followed by a smile.
"...Alright, I knew I could count on you, Little Moon. Do take care, though, alright? It's quite cold outside." With that statement, she looks outside the window in the side of the room. It was currently snowing a little bit, but it wasn't anything too serious.
"Ah, don't worry about it. I'll be fine, really. I already have the proper clothes, see?" Getting up, you wave your body around, showing off your purple Kimono. It was a gift from your mother yourself when you became 15...And despite you getting older, it's still comfortable as ever...
...At least when you're inside your home, that is.
"Hm," Staring at you, Najimi lets out a little smile, before getting up herself- And grabbing a small, white scarf that was neatly wrapped around under the Kotatsu. Did she decide to hide that there, knowing you would say something like this...? Eeeh, you suppose this is your mom, after all. It gets quite hard for someone who has known you for 17 years not to know your thought pattern at this point...!
"Here." And with that, she gently wraps it around your neck. You always thought it would be slightly uncomfortable to wear something like this, but... "It's comfortable now, isn't it? I don't want you getting a cold, now. Even we aren't immune to the cold and the heat..."
"Right, right," You are quick to say, adjusting the neckpiece slightly. "I know, mom. As I said, I'll be fine."
...
...Then...Putting her hands on both of your cheeks, she leans forward, and places her forehead on yours, closing her eyes, and simply staying in that position for a moment.
"Akihiro..." She says, leaning away and staring at your eyes. "...Be safe, alright?"
...You were used to this scene.
Every time you went out by yourself, every time you stayed home alone...She would do this every time. A little show of affection followed by good wishes.
...You can't say you blame her, after all, you are her only son, and living in a town full of humans is...Dangerous. Principally without a father figure around.
You sigh, and smile, putting your hand at the top of her head, and patting her gently, before giving her a grin.
"It's okay, mom." You say, giving her a thumbs up. "I'll be safe, I promise."
...With a little smile, she seemed to have heard enough, finally letting go of your face, and putting her hands together.
"...Alright then, I trust you." With that, she makes her way to the basket full of wood, and, seemingly without any trouble, lifts it up, and makes her way to you without any trouble at all. You quickly put your arms around the holders of it and put it in your shoulders. At first, you lean forward a little bit due to the heavyweight of it, but, you keep straight without any trouble right after.
"Aki, stay out of trouble, okay? And-"
"...And if you see something that doesn't look human, run. I know, alright? I'll be safe."
...Yes, that is the sort of lifestyle you two live. An almost nomadic lifestyle, only truly going out and interacting with other people when its to sell things, work on jobs, and other occurrences. Your mother taught everything you know, those being writing, talking, reading, as well as other simple knowledge... You never did go to a school, or, rather, one of those 'temple schools' that are around. All you know human children are taught thereby monks or something...
Still, while you don't have an amazing education, you wouldn't call yourself dumb!
Gained Knowledge C--
- You are well taught and intelligent enough to know how to read, talk, write, and other simple things like that. You also have a decent knowledge of what things are, and how things work.
Your mother nods, smiling proudly, before giving you a little wave. You smile, and wave back, before opening the door to the outside- And heading out.
Now Playing ~ 夜民家 (Night House / Yoru Minka) from Demon Slayer - Kimetsu No Yaiba
...You immediately feel it. The cold air of winter rushing in your face and filling your lungs. The small specks of snow falling on your hair and clothes, and the frigid air making your breath visible. You hear a slight 'crunch' in the ground as you put your foot down, and do it again, and again- Passing through the three-inch snow beneath you. It's a bit hard to walk through this terrain with something this heavy in your back, but, you're a Youkai, you'll be fine. You're sure of it.
You turn your head around, and, there, you see your mother standing by the door, waving her hand to you, and a small smile on her face.
You smile as well, and, waving your hand too- You start walking forward.
The soft cold wind of winter passes through your body as you walk through the snowy forest. Of course, living rather far away from the village makes so your walk from here to there and vice versa is, understandably, a bit long. Sometimes it lets you dead tired, principally on seasons like these.
...Oh well. At least you're not cleaning the snow from the path.
Humming a little song to yourself, you keep moving forward. The village isn't too far, as you like to believe- You can already see the houses and little people that look like ants in the distance. You live on the top of a hill, and due to that, the air is a bit more frigid then it is down there. Still, pretty chilly, even for someone with 'fur' like you...
Mitsukaze is a interesting enough place. Despite not being a big, big village, and only having a few kilometers of size, it is a place you are content with. The people here seem nice enough, despite you never have too many interactions with them. You know some people, but, those are either work friends in the part of your mother or kids from the other villagers that are around your age.
...Such is the life of a Youkai. Your mom says that if you interact too much, or become too close to them, the chances of you being found out are increased- She never said you shouldn't have friends, though, but getting too close to someone might be...Dangerous.
You're still not sure what to think of that, however. Would true friends really betray you if they found out you are a Kitsune?
...In fact, what do you think of humans?
[Write-in]
...Before you can ponder any further, your feet hit stone- And right before your eyes, you are standing in the opposite 'entrance' to Mitsukaze.
You can see multiple people walking around- Women carrying their groceries with them, men walking around with pretty outfits, and kids running around, playing with each other in the snow. It's quite the usual sight. Still, you can see a few lights coming from some of the houses, from people who most likely want to stay home to defend themselves from this cold. Most likely families, too...
Well, it's still early in the morning. If you're lucky enough today, you might be back home before lunch. With a nod to yourself, you adjust the scarf your mother gave you once more, as you then go forward.
...Already, you can see some people noticing you. You can hear chatter and some people pointing at you as you walk- you can tell at this point, it's nothing malicious. A good portion of the village knows you and your mother at this point, as the little family that lives in the hills. It's mostly things like 'there goes Akihiro-san' and 'my, he's grown already' from older people, who you are sure your mother knows.
...She's quite popular in the village, due to the jobs and overall helpful attitude. Though due to the fact you're barely out...You haven't made that much of a name for yourself, still.
Still...What do you do?
