Hehehe, this is great. Loving the characterisation at work here. The Team RWBY 'rolling bitch tornado' is worth every ounce of popcorn.

I'm gonna go for...

[X] Belladonna and the street kid. There seems to be something more at work below the surface for the both of them, and you're interested to know what.

...On the basis of we haven't really seen much of those two yet. I mean, up until Ozpin called her out, we didn't even have Blake's name.

"You are just impossible! This whole trip you have done nothing but whine and complain!"

"I'm so sorry, I guess it's just in my nature to steal your jobs."

"Wha- that- that was uncalled-for."

As a side note, is this a 'they comin' over 'ere, stealing our jerbs' thing going on with Faunus in Vale? They do seem to be 'working class' from what we've seen, and if their animal traits make them literally better at doing stuff...

[X] Ruby and Sky. She seems to have latched onto him over something. Maybe whatever it is he can do that warranted Ozpin's specific approval?

Tell me about Semblances, dammit!
You take a deep breath. And you let a few of Jaune's mannerisms back to the surface, because those are quite good at stalling for time. "Oh, I uh, Hunter family and all so we have a lot of, y'know, documentation. Grimm masks are where they keep their-" identities? egoes? No, too much detail, only a Grimm would know that specifically "-powers, or something like that."

You pause. It just occurred to you that you have no idea what your mask must have looked like before you devoured Jaune. Or... indeed if you even had one. You must have, mustn't you? But you were- are a formless Shadow, a mask is calcified self, something solid and permanent and Real, or as much as any Grimm can be Real. In any case you suppose that Jaune himself is the closest thing to your mask now, him and the de- you have been spending far too long on this mental tangent and now Pyrrha is looking at you strangely.
Hmmn....
...
...
How long until this?:

"Not native!" you reply. What a powerful strain it must be to be so hard to kill already! You're already salivating at the prospect of consuming it. Which is very inappropriate right now so you conceal that fact by hiding your mouth behind your sleeve and raise your banner. "Take the mask?"

Oh my god Jaune you fucking weirdo.

"Ohhhhh about..." Ruby makes vague gestures with her hands, "fffffour, maybe five hours?" She pauses, cradling her mug in both hands and shrinking down sheepishly. "I had to stay here so I wouldn't go back and ruin the exam for everyone."

Oh my god Ruby you fuck.

"Oh I'm a straight-up goddess Ren, it's not my fault some people can't comprehend perfection."

Oh my god Nora.

Man, Nora's personality is unexpected but not exactly unwelcome. Ren's the quiet, kinda withdrawn and more obviously passive of the pair who's default mode is Just Putting Up With It. Nora's louder, more inclined to take charge and assume command and seems to at least present as having a pretty big ego. Also I'm detecting faint notes of fucking Gina "My mother cried the day I was born because she knew she would never be better than me" Linetti which I can absolutely dig. :V

Uhh, bwuhh, what else. Sky's Semblance is apparently not that useful for direct combat (or defense 'cause the dude got himself hurt again) but it's apparently handy enough that Ozpin's down to have him in the school at all and praised Cardin for making good use of it. Thrush is a Faunus which is super neat 'cause we've got a three part spread -Blake, Yang, and now harvey birdman- who seem to be from all walks of life. Dove has...actually just vanished again despite being xbawks huge. Blake got fucking roasted and the prospective team RWBY (and actually JNPR too assuming Zerban sticks with the canon set ups) is really interesting. There'd be Jaune, the actual support caster/healer/shot-caller with self-indulgent Nora and Pyrra "Overcompetitiveness is a lie made up by losers" Nikos as heavies. Annddd then a sorta inscrutable Ren as backline support? And then RWBY would be the smolest zoom-zoom murderhobo trying to ride herd on, uh, the rolling bitch tornado.

Team Cardinal's dynamic would be really interesting too. Cardin seems to be the most outwardly capable but he's basically the only really skilled one (dude was the only one who made it without a scratch) and he's gonna be trying to order around a Faunus street kid as a probable noble.

...Shit well I'm excited. :V

Ozpin's not beckoning Chris Hanson and actually seems to be, y'know, leaning into the role of an exacting but unconventional professor with a flair for the dramatic which is direly appreciated.

We're already doing okay with Yang, Pyrra's in a fucking foul mood and I think every part of Jaune would want to steer clear of that, Nora and Ren's dynamic is a daunting one to break into (even though we're gonna have to do that at some point if we get shuffled on the same team). Blake and Russel don't really seem like the kind of people who would react super friendly-like to someone sidling up uninvited. Ruby and Sky are my second pick's 'cause fuck me Ruby is adorable-creepy and I'm super curious about Sky. But I wanna know more about Cardin (dude's competent and competent people are a Problem for spies and infiltrators) and we need to stop screaming and running away from Weiss at some point so.

Yeah. :V

A Hunter named Winchester
I'm sort of surprised that Rooster Teeth didn't make any Supernatural references.

[X] Yang and Pyrrha. Well, this was pretty much inevitable. The two toughest, most aggressive killers of the pack are sizing each other up. This could be interesting and/or catastrophic.
[X] Ren and Nora. Maybe Ozpin had a point about them being too close, they're the only ones that aren't mingling. Who better to expand their social circle than you, then?

Has there ever been an RWBY quest where Blake was part of a winning vote? I am sad. ;_;

I honestly just found out that that's Cardin's last name because I've only seen him get called by his first name or be called "that guy from season 1"

If it weren't for looking up 'Winchester rwby' and getting that I would've kept thinking Zerban put Dean in to appease Wade.

I'll roll the dice to see if we can get a reasonable rapport with them. There's a small chance they might be more open with the comment that they're at risk for being separated.

Ren and GrimmJaune can bond over being completely exhausted while their respective female partners are still firing at 100%,

I wonder.

In canon, the Arcs haven't really gotten any screen time. In spite of stealing a family heirloom, and then enrolling in a Hunter academy, they do, like... Basically nothing. We don't see what was going on with them at all.

Here, obviously, that's not the case. We know, for one, that they exist; We can presume that they're aware of the fact that we 'stole' an heirloom weapon (I'm not sure whether it technically counts as stealing when it belongs to your family, which you're part of-?) and, given they've got Actual Competent Huntsmen/Huntresses, we can probably assume they've been able to keep something of an eye on us.

I'd be astonished if they didn't ask around after us and/or the weapon, and even more surprised if they didn't have an in at Beacon who's like 'Hey, you know your runaway kid, he tried to sign up with us' and them quietly arranging things so that they're legitimate- Not for our sakes, so much as keeping the family name out of the mud, you know- and if that happened...

Well, what I'm getting at is that I wouldn't be surprised to have one of Juane's sisters come to 'Check Up' on him, much like Winter did with Weiss, at some point. Possibly to give him some words of wisdom along the lines of "We covered for your ass up until now but if you die we're disowning your sorry ass" or something, because his family clearly has their priorities straight like that.

Well I mean given that Jaune's family straight up forgot he existed when he was standing in the same room as them like...

Would them 100% not knowing and not caring be better or worse?

Probably is stealing from his parents.

I mean, my own personal fanon has the Arc parents- who canon paints as being good, caring parents in the like two offhand lines talking about them- actually did cover for his sorry ass, and the reason why Ozpin tells Glenda Goodtits not to worry about it is because he's taking a massive bribe to look the other way already aware.

I mean, I don't know how they could have missed Jaune participating in the fucking Vytal Festival, AKA the massively televised tournament that literally everyone across the world was apparently watching, so at minimum they know about it by then? Which makes the complete lack of any plotline involving Jaune's giant-ass family coming after him bizarre in RWBY canon. Though, to be fair, I do guess that they'd probably have other shit to worry about after the Vytal Festival went down.

Well honestly I loved the update: great fight scenes, descriptions, dialogue and plot.

In regards to voting I'm leaning towards @TenfoldShields suggested path for a few reasons. Firstly because while Ren/Nora look interesting and I wouldn't be super upset if they win I think were going to get plenty of chances to interact with them latter. Because based on the dynamics on display I can totally see the canon lineups forming.

Cardin's group is already an established things that went through the forest as a whole and got praised for it. More on them later.

The Rolling Bitch Tornado/Proto-RWBY is already a thing and while their inter-group cohesiveness is terrible Ozpin seems the sort to go " A huntress must often work with people they don't like, learn to stomach each other.' Ruby being put with them works as her primary problem seems to be her charging off Solo and the person best suited to curb those tendencies is Yang.

Ren/Nora and Pyrrha/Jaune both took the forest as two person groups that resulted from personality compatibility, Nora/Ren have some history and Pyrrha kidnapped us, (though Shadow went along with it). So some variation of Team JNPR should be in the works. Since we are likely to end up in a team with them chatting to Ren/Nora isn't as high a priority for me.

Weiss and Cardin on the other hand are interesting and potentially informative options. We know from the where does Uncle Torchwich stage your first lesson on humanity vote that the Schnee Industries have a company town in Vale. Their a big deal with apparent power/influence but we don't know what shape that takes here. The longer we interact with Weiss the better odds we can build up some idea of what the nature of the Schnee is in this world.

(Its worth noting that upon getting the low down on our weapon Weiss wanted to partner with us because our skill and hers apparently lined up well, we rejected working together based on her uncanny similarity to our boss but she did make the offer so if she can get past the sting of us going along with Miss Nikos we have an avenue to talk shop.)

Cardin is a wild card/unknown. Out of all the characters he seems the most different in base nature from the canon version. Not difficult given his canon self was a one dimensional racist thug. While he's getting a far better showing here than canon it is worth noting that there have been several references to his canon characterization, the initial who did you talk to vote had him and Blake staring at each other and him struggling to not say something. Ozpin's comment about their being a line between leadership/Bullying and Cardin was walking it.

So I find myself interested in these two and what Zerban has done with them.

[X] Schnee and Winchester. They seem to be deep in conversation - well, she seems to be complaining at him as the only one close enough to her status for it and he seems to be humouring her. Eavesdropping alone might prove useful.

Better much better; because, we are not Jaune, and the less people we have to bull makes our job. The fact they cared so little about Jaune also makes any changes in personalities that would have tripped a red flag much easier to hide if we had to interact with them.

I mean it probably would sting the Jaune in our subconscious, and at worst, Jaune might make an outburst or two before being suppressed, but that sort of thing isn't too inhuman to blow our cover. Trying and failing to suppress how your parent's apathy hurts is a pretty human sentiment.
