[X] The Gardens
The Castle Gardens are like nothing you've ever seen. Laurel carries you along ordered paths of stone, while Alaina runs about, pointing to flowers and calling out their names. Unlike the Royal Woods, this place, for all that it blooms with life, is structured. The flowers are in neat rows, the trees sparse and carefully cultivated to be pleasing to the eye. Three great walls rear up far into the sky, whilst the fourth is open to your gaze.
The view it boasts is magnificent. You can see farther than you ever have before, and you can see what feels like the whole city from here. Tier after tier of the settlement is visible, separated by strong stone walls, with each consecutive wall taller and grander than the last. To your left, you spy a large patch of woodland in the second tier, which you guess to be the Royal Woods, where you hatched. The rooves of the buildings that you can see are in good repair, and off in the distance, beyond the final wall of the city, you can see a wide road, well maintained and packed with travellers of all sorts that are near the size of ants to you up here in the citadel.
Laurel's hand finds the top of your head, giving you a gentle scratch as she takes in the view with you. "Beautiful, isn't it?" She asks, and you purr quietly in reply before she turns to where Alaina is waiting for you both on the path leading to a small wooden pavilion. Vines and other climbing plants trail up the sides of the structure, some of which are flowering, and Alaina seems to know the names and at least three uses of every one.
Within the pavilion, there are comfortable chairs and a table. Small lamps, their power dimmed while the sun still shines, hang from the ceiling, suggesting that people like to frequent this place at all hours, rather than just during the day.
Laurel sets the tome down on the surface of the table with a thud before she allows you to climb down her arm and inspect the great book yourself. The magic bound in it is interesting, but difficult to understand. You do know, however, that it is old. Very old indeed.
Sat atop Laurel's leg for height, Alaina makes herself comfortable as Laurel turns the cover, and together, you begin to read…
Investigation-Test Difficulty 9 (5 +5 (You don't know how to read…) -1 (The book has pictures.)) Rolled: 5,4,10, Rerolled: 5, 1 Success.
Or rather, Alaina and Laurel begin to read, as you realise that you don't actually know how… So far, you'd simply identified things via sight, or illustration, and while this book is illustrated, and very prettily so, you feel like you miss out on a lot simply because you cannot read the words right in front of you.
You chirp piteously, and Alina looks over attentively. She looks back at the book, then makes a face at Laurel, who sighs and begins to read aloud…
Skill Gained! Knowledge (Legend-Lore) (INT) Rank 1 – A rather esoteric field of knowledge, it's applications are few and far between, but when you do need it? It could potentially be one of the most useful skills in the world.

As the sun begins to sink towards the horizon, none of you notice thanks to the lamps which brighten even as the light outside of the pavilion fades. Sunset is upon you now, and the sky is aflame with reds and oranges, drifting into a soft pink as the light dims. You are curled in Alaina's arms, who is in turn, relaxed against Laurel. Her soft voice hasn't faltered for hours.
As you and Alaina began to tire, Laurel started to find slower, more relaxed tales, rather than the more exciting stories of ancient treasures and mighty warriors she had begun with. Footsteps upon stone, and then wood, make you look up. Standing at the edge of the pavilion, his short sandy hair above a pair of spectacles which you can tell are enchanted in some way, stands a young man. Upon seeing you, he grins, and the resemblance he carries to Alaina in that moment is startling.
The young man quietly seats himself in a free chair, exchanging a friendly nod with Laurel as he does so. Wriggling free from the arms of the now-slumbering Alaina, you clamber up onto Laurel's shoulder. Her voice a whisper now, Laurel sets the book back upon the table and closes it, Settling Alaina in her arms more steadily. "Greetings, Prince Matthias." She says, her voice low.
"And to you, Laurel." He replies, a rueful smile forming on his lips as he takes in the sight of Alaina, slumbering away. "And here I was expecting my favourite little sister to be awake when I heard that she was spending time in the gardens today."
"Your
only little sister has had a busy day, I believe she's entitled to her rest." Laurel quietly retorts, and Matthias raises his palms in mock surrender, grinning.
"I know, I know. More fool me for not getting out of my study earlier, I guess." The young man's gaze shifts to you, and he gives you a nod as if in greeting. "I take it the little one sitting atop your shoulder is…"
"Alaina's newest friend? Indeed. Neptune, meet Prince Matthias of Linderin, Alaina's older brother. Matthias, this is Neptune, a dragon." Laurel's introduction is lazy, one hand holding Alaina steady whilst the other waves at each of you.
"Hmmm… I've not read much on dragons…" Matthias says, pushing his half-moon spectacles further up his nose, and pulling a notebook from one of his pockets, but before he can flip it open, Laurel stops him with a look and a raised hand.
"Oh no. Not here. You'll get too into it and wake your sister." Her voice, though it is still quiet, is firm, and Matthias quails beneath her stare.
Finally, Matthias shakes his head, slipping the notebook back into his pocket. "Fine, fine." He says, yielding to Laurel's gaze, he quickly bounces back, however, turning his eyes back towards you. "If you do want to do some work with me, then perhaps we can meet in my study? It's not so far from Alaina's room, and Laurel knows the way regardless."
You tilt your head at him, and chirp quietly before curling up atop Laurel's shoulder. The late hour is starting to get to you as well, you can feel your dreams calling. Matthias seems to take this as a positive reply, smiling as he rises to his feet once more.
Turning to leave, Matthias reaches the edge of the pavilion before stopping and turning to face the three of you once more. "One last thing. Cedric's been looking for the three of you." Matthias' face turns down into a frown, "best be careful."
Laurel gives a final nod of thanks, and Matthias trudges away beneath the light of the setting sun.

The sun has set properly by the time you get back to Alaina's room for the night. Laurel carries Alaina through the darkened and near empty corridors of the citadel, with you still riding on her shoulders.
Waking Alaina enough to get her to change into sleeping clothes and putting her to bed with a speed and smoothness that spoke of practice, Laurel settled downstairs with you for a while, scratching around the nubs that would become your horns as you simply sat in a comfortable silence.
It was here, in Laurel's lap, warm and dark and the only sounds being each of your breathing, you dozed off.
And you Dreamt.

What do you dream of?

Once again, thanks to
@Snowfire for betaing this for me.
And now onto something which I am somewhat enthusiastic about. I open the Book of Tales of Wonder to all of you. If you'd like to write something to go in the book, I welcome it! If you need more information to write the thing you want to, please send me a PM. The rewards will stay the same, but because none of the stories that go into the book involve Neptune, I'm afraid I won't be able to award traits for them.
