I guess it's because I used the word 'perplexed'. What I should have said maybe was 'worried and upset'
Yep, pretty much.

When we get the chance I'll vote for that. Creating a nature elemental that can start regulating the biome and maybe a river elemental that can start purifying the river would be good investments.

Sorry.

You turn the woman down in a satisfyingly aggressive fashion: having Riya physically expel her from the tower's entrance, slamming closed all the doors and windows behind her with your sorcerious power. Then you sever all the wires connecting the town's network of beads with your tower. Careless as to how the wires rain down upon their heads and the distressing way the network sags, you amplify your voice and shout, "AND DON'T ASK AGAIN!"

The people cower from your tower, but that's not what's important. You return to your project... Several days later, the celebration is well over. You never managed to find the trail of the Void Elemental again.

How do you feel about this?

@Tithed_Verse spelling
Angery -> Angry
Frusterated -> Frustrated

Grammar-wise, Raging might better be Enraged.

Y'all literally just chose a dumb option. Like, they're literally our citizens who literally were just practicing their culture through a seasonal celebration and invited us, their leader, to partake in something their community values. And y'all chose to ignore that for the very flimsy chance of possibly getting one particularly shiny elemental out of the unnumbered hundreds which we have to exploit.

And now you want to feel enraged. Over people doing the same shit they've done every year for a long time before we because their governor. I.e., you're picking the option that will have us abuse and blame our subordinates for failing to track an ephemeral void elemental, something we were unlikely to succeed at even with fairly decent conditions.

I don't like Enraged because I feel that wording would provide fewer hints as to what the side effects of taking that choice are. Right now, it feels to me like the side effects of taking the choice are pretty clear for all the options except frustrated, but I don't really know how to word that one better.

I added an edited version of your post, but I think you should review it in case I overwrote some subtleties.

So you were going for more of a frothing rage, with raging? kk.

What side effects is frustrated meant to imply? I'm thinking of it as a sense of being foiled by the town's distraction & our own thaumaturgic incompetency. I'd expect it to result in a moderate distance from the town and a laying out of rules, somewhat similar to how angry/raging might eventual end up with but less so.

Apparently non-secret info gained as a result of editing:
Angry = lower relationship w/ town, increased loyalty as a result of fear, and a wider bonus v enemy armies/other foreigners as a result of fear.

Frustrated results in us throwing ourselves into our work -> next project gets a bonus, but our people see us as a sort of "distant presence that's generally uninvolved in their lives."

Raging results in us destroying the town. Enough said.

Depressed results in us withdrawing to the tower, "and to other spirits": Improvement in relationship with other spirits, "reduction in relationship with humans... again." We think the Void elemental died -> the spirits know we care about them & the humans are confused.

Apathetic results in us "eventually sort of half-halfheartedly apologizing to the town." I.e., "Nothing really changes."

[X] Depressed
I'm rather interested in Depressed because a better relationship with the spirits would be of rather immense advantage later, and our reputation with the town & other people can eventually be repaired. And besides, being emotional in such a way (as opposed to destroying the town) isn't awful in itself.

You are Shelby Wroth. It's been several months since you took over the district, and you've largely thrown yourself into your work. Riya struggles to bring you out of the tower: You spend most of your time referencing books, mailing them back to the libraries in Central, and ordering new books. You also spend a great deal of your time preparing and restocking generic mana-structures that can be repurposed readily into any alchemical devices you might need. This should help you put together alchemical projects quickly and readily.

Despite that, Riya is often successful in her endeavors: She brings you to parks, and forgotten spots. Places where spirits congregate, and then she guards you from interloping indigs while you speak with the spirits. You can't find the spirit of Blood Creek, though you find other river and creek spirits in the small streams that wander through the hills around Blood Creek Springs. It seems that the only danger is that Riya will braid too many flowers into your hair while you're distracted.

Since the fateful day with the Void Spirit, the tribals havn't invited you to take part in any of their celebrations. Then, one day, they disapear. Most of them have left on their hunt, leaving only two of the three elders, and a handful of other tribals behind

I kind of want to get more skilled workers, but I'm uncertain a) whether we can support them and b) if they're worthwhile.
a)
Does our capitol have enough food?
Does our filter produce enough water?
b)
Wat would they even do? I mostly care about building roads and making the land more arable and farming and connecting our populace. I feel like skilled workers are good for most of this, if they're actually skilled. But at the same time like... surely our tribals & the minors and stuff are good for something??
Are we exploiting the rest of our population sufficiently?

Would spending time with spirits help us figure out how to build greater spirits?

@Umi-san

A) probably enough food, due to the fact that colonists are typically more willing to import food. not really enough water but your people can find ways to cope.

B) they would provide you with a larger tax basis, and would probably start building proper industry. It would basically be bringing civilization out here, but they're less resilienct than your tribals, meaner, and less able to do the demi-mystical stuff your tribals do, like summon spirits of the dead. With your current choices, exploring the tribals well will be harder than using interchangeable civilized folk.

In the end, you'll probably want both.

The miners mine. They moved out here to get away from civilization. You need more trust with them to do anything with them.

Yes, working with spirits would help you figure that out

The big weakness of the tribals is that they basically don't have an economy. They don't buy and sell. They barely trade. They're just struggling to survive, so everyone plays their role. You do what you're good at and trust everyone else to do what they're good at. You're paid in respect more than money.

@Tithed_Verse What would the assistants hired by hire assistants do? Is it similar to when we hired Riya?
What do you mean when you say that the skilled workers would be "meaner"? Is it quite likely that they will jar with our tribals?
How low is their resilience in comparison to the current status of our land?

@Umi-san the tribals have culture and celebration and stuff native to their culture. The civilized skilled workers only have a handful of officially recognized holidays, and are willing to lie, cheat, and steal. They're also willing to complain to you about various things, using officially recognized channels.

The assistants would essentially give you an action in their specialty every year or so. Your turns right now are set to about 3/year, so every three turns you'd be able to do something in their specialty. They build roads or infrastructure or monitize the mines or such, or run local law and order... That sort of thing. Think of them as your cabinet

With their fragility, you're talking about 3-7% per year dopping dead for the civilized folk. The tribals, for comparison, tend to lose around 2% per year

After the incident we probably should start developing the district with construction.

Okay, so...
Fuck the "civilized" skilled workers. Like, I 100% prefer our tribals who actually have some kind of culture. Jeeze.

@veekie I'll vote for your plan if you promise to vote for Study Binding next round?

They have culture, it's just that they don't all have the same culture. They're going to be from a plethora of different districts, so all they'll have in common with each other is the milquetoast official lowest common denominator culture. This sort of colonial push tends to create a great deal of conformity.

I feel like, if we want to be a culturally coherent district, we need to support tribal culture and attempt to acclimate them to our system of governance and approach to infrastructure before introducing a new population of pre-adapted citizens who quite possibly would be highly bigoted toward their predecessors.

I.e., we need to fortify the city, talk to a bunch of people, solve peoples' problems, and make communication easier and then start accepting/requesting immigrants in a slow, deliberate way.

Btw, what are the paths to immortality for our char's mage skills, again?

Edit: Also, to the other players, while this is probably an unnecessary comment please remember that deals w/ spirits & elementals & gods might let us go "toe-to-toe" with powerful wizards using our witch eyes alone. & Spirits are powerful enough to grant immortality, and presumably to affect other things within their domain. So please consider that socializing w/ spirits is in a way developing infrastructure, creating weapons, etc.
