We have WoAN that CB duration is 2-3 turns, and our Admin lives 1-2 turns. If our CB is 2 turns and our Admin lives 2, we just passed up the chance to deal with the threat.

Yeah I acknowledged all that. It is a risk, which is why I was considering switching.

What happens if Khemetri conquer them?

If the Khem start fighting we probably will get a chance to pile in to grab a slice of the pie before they finish taking over. So while this wouldn't be ideal we'd be able grab the territory critical to our interests.

This is actually something I'm concerned might be happening right now. We really have no idea how serious the war mission the HH sent out is, does that mean there's a new WAAAGH bearing down on us that AN was going to mention but since the update got cut in two means will be talked about tomorrow instead? Hopefully not but I'm really not sure, which adds a lot of uncertainty in regards to any military plans

Stop: I too identify with lacking a spinal cord
If you want to sacrifice lives in the future when they come back for round two because you lack any spinal cord be my guest, but at least be honest about it.
Yes! Well done now you can do single number addition! Now factor in potential losses, the cost of fighting the HK, the cost of looking strong enough that others don't attack us, the cost of fighting the Khem, and then still having an army afterwards to fend off scavengers and clear up bandits.

Don't strain yourself too hard if these numbers go above single digits though
i too identify with lacking a spinal cord @McLuvin please refrain from such accusations in the future; you have been given a warning for marginal behaviour, but it isn't in any way uncivil enough to merit an infraction. @Golden Eyed King however, you made a post which as almost no point but reveling in it's own incivility and accusing another poster of some quite rude things; you have been given 25 points and a warning to please not repeat this kind of behaviour.

Have a good day and don't forget your spinal cords at home.

That gets awkward at work, you see.

Also to people saying they will be, or may be, willing to risk our civ so that we can kill the HK, I cry foul and not cool. Lots of folks have put a lot of effort into this and risking our civ is not something I appreciate hearing and one of the few things I will actively object to.
It isn't spite, it is a variant on the Prisoner's Dilemma.

Using the last war as an example,
Peace faction:
  • Desires - peace now and peace later
  • Neutral - peace now and war later
  • Fears - war now
Defense faction
  • Desires - peace now and war later
  • Neutral - war now
  • Fears - peace now and peace later
The peace faction wants to avoid their most feared result of war now, so they promise the defense faction that in exchange for peace now they'll declare war later. That is the defense factions most desired result, so they eagerly agree and the war is ended. Seeing the threat has passed, the peace faction considers reneging on said promise so they can achieve their most desired goal of peace and peace. At this point, a projection is made to find the optimal path forward.

-The betrayal occurs, and peace is immediately secured. Sometime later another war occurs. The peace faction tries the same gambit again. The defense faction, remembering their previous betrayal, votes for their second more favored option of war now. Ill-prepared war commences, dice rolls occur. Repeat ad nauseum until we roll snake eyes and die.

-The betrayal does not occur. A war happens in the short term. Sometime later, another war occurs. The peace faction promises the defense faction war later for peace now. The defense faction, remembering their previous interactions, readily agree. Peace commences. Later, a properly prepared for war will occur and the dice are relatively inconsequential.

Real talk, the Metal Workers are our oldest friends and they've never attacked us. Not inviting them while inviting some asshole who like to wreck their shit in is just plan wrong.
Yet you didn't address the potential results of not inviting either of the two kindgoms and then immediately after conquering one of them.

Dotdotdot. :p
If we're going to go to war against treacherous scumbags then there is no way in hell that I'm going to vote in favor of half assing it, just because a bunch goldfish peasants can only remember a single name. The Thunder Horse swooped in just as cravenly as the Highlanders.

If the majority wants to be utterly stupid narratively, having us forgive the thunder fucks but not the people tangentially more related to us, then fuck those guys. The Thunder Horse is far more a threat and they fucking wrecked Txolla. They killed gods know how many in the north.

Can you really expect me to not be disgusted or care what the Thunder Horse think about their rightful consequence? Will it make them worry? Good! Further more, does anyone think Yenyna would be happy to see those murderers walking around and peacefully competing with our men?

I'm thinking for the sake of everyone's happiness! I'm embracing the bloodlust and arrogance! I don't care anymore, let's just erase everyone who tries to get in our way! Ruining our traits, dangerous precedence, societal backlash and worsening- I don't care about those things. Full throttle.

Fuckers better commit and not cock shit up! Storm Wolves ravanged the Metal Workers so they have to die! Thunder Horse killed our people because they wanted our crown, so they have to die! The Highlanders also did the same, they all need to die!

The thing is if we were snubbing the HK just because of the last attack then the TH would have been included in that list, but that's not why we are snubbing them.

This is the second time the HK have attacked us when our backs are turned, they stole iron from us by causing chaos in our kingdom and arranged for our people to kill each other in riots, and apparently stealing iron isn't the only thing they have been doing in our borders either.

It's also important to note that the only way they can do any major expansion is through us. They have to attack us to grow which means there is no way we won't fight them again in the future if they continue to live.

We want peace, but we can't have peace with the HK because peace with us is detrimental to the HK's future. And how could we trust them when we know that they are infiltrating us and causing chaos? Stealing our secrets and attempting to weaken us so that they can finally expand beyond their hills?

The TH have other avenues of expansion, they don't need to take the lowlands to grow. That's why we know it's possible for peace to exist between us, because we can make it so that working with us is more worth while then working against us.

But the HK will always be thinking, "If we could just break the Ymaryn then we could be great." We can't negotiate with them because they're stuck in a corner between a mountain range and us, and even through the mountain passes on be other side they are cornered between us, the mountains, and the Khem. It's why peace between our nations will never work, because it will always be in the best interests of the HK to work against us and never with us.

It also helps that by inviting the TH and not the HK we are showing everyone around us that we aren't about to go on a conquest spree. I could see the TH becoming worried when they hear about us invading the HK, that we might turn towards them next, that they might decide to preventively attack. But if they know that we invited them to the games but not the HK that should show just how mad we are at the HK and should set their minds at ease that we have no desires to conquer them afterwards.
Oh, neat. A nicely thought out, and politely presented opinion on what I'd see as a good reason.

This actually changes my mind. Thanks for pointing this out. Sorry rethought some things.

As a note on Admin dude: I rethought my yes decision on Redshore, I was salty about them being so annoying and just went fuck it. I am undecided on whether or not it matters to Admin dude if they are a Free City or not but I'll listen to the concerns of others.

As to another reason, he's probably the best thing we have to counter shadowruns. Either domestic or HK based. As the closest thing to an Intrigue Hero we got.

Actually, the Trelli are perhaps the worst and most objectionable faction in the game right now because of how excessively horrible their slavery practices are. Since we killed the Xoh for killing babies, which is equally bad in scope as what is happening with Trelli, and many people advocate for war with Trelli; I am amending my vote to exclude them as well.

Because I am consistent.

Actually I remember quite a few bad things about the swamp folk so they can't come either.

As I am voting out of strategic calculus it does not matter to me how many the TH and SW killed last war, only the prospect of lasting peace, which exists with them, but not the HK.

The Thunder Horse are warlike opportunists that bedded heavily with the Xoh and their women-child-man-slave sacrificing culture of blood and demons. There will never be peace with them, so long as they are them.

Dude. Trash Martial King. Worse Case Projections:

Advisor: Sir! The Khemetri have roflstomped the Highlander's field armies, as expected. Should we secure the mountain passes?

Admin-chan: Nah, I'm too busy fightin corruption and noble oppression. Plus we got this sweet Dam that's allllmost done. We can grab land later.

-2 years later-

Advisor: Sir! The Khemetri have captured and executed/enslaved the Highlander royal family (because we're literally the best/nicest civ known, by definition the Khemetri are nastier than us), should we take the passes before the Khemetri armies seize them?

Admin-chan: Eh. I'm busy integrating Gullvalley. Gotta fix the war damage, yakno?

- 6 months later -

Advisor: Sir! The Khemetri have siezed the passes into our heartland from the Highlander Remnants!

Admin-chan: Great! My wife's a nice girl, if I ask nicely they'll let us have the passes for a song.

-another 2 years later-

Advisor: Sir! Our diplomats report the Khemetri flatly refused to give up the passes, and rejected all offers we've made for them.

Admin-chan: That's OK. They're nice people. We're related, you know. I'm sure we can trust them not to abuse the paths straight into our nation's heart for the next millenia or two.

This is what the thread sounds like to me.

It's this sort of pedantic and vindictive attitude that most of the pro-war proponents are fairly adamantly against. It's not about fighting other peoples, it's not about some nebulous moral high ground of only peaceful people shouldn't be crushed.

It's about the fact if the HK feel they can get away with it, they will take a swing at us. Because they feel they have no choice but to risk taking a swing at us, and because they feel if they time it right they can afford to. They have the means of circumventing a lot of our defenses, threatening a huge amount of hard to fortify territory, cutting off a third of our country, assaulting our core, and have demonstrated a consistent willingness to abuse those things.

The HK is being slated to die not because we're internet tough guys making hard decisions in the throes of rage over the audacity of these abject moral inferiors (that mostly looks to be you, to be honest). It's because people are afraid of what these fucks can do if we turn our back on them given what they've done before, how incompatible our policies are, and the fact we can never assume our core turf is safe if they menace it. The TH attacking is potentially a problem, but we can leverage the rivers and we fight damn well on lowland terrain in addition to the fact TH has far less motivation to attack us than the HK do. Trying to hold the Lightning Wolves accountable for what? Fucking up someone else? We're not the world police- that doesn't work in real modern politics, let alone Bronze Age.

My point is, take your childish tantrum, your irrational emotional flailing- and stuff it. It doesn't help anyone, it's awful in general, it straw man's a legitimate stance, and is liable to get hundreds of thousands killed.

You make it sound like demons are real. Human sacrifice does not meaningfully impact geopolitics. Also everyone around us is warlike.
Tbf, Moloch Calls was a serious wtf for all Xohyr's neighbors, and it almost did cause a huge amount of problems for them not even including the Ymaryn Crusade.

Trade Goods:
-Fine Textiles - Khemetri had attained Leading status here, and the Trelli have attained Leading via the Khemetri.
-Gold - Khemetri has attained Leading status here, but aren't sharing it with the Trelli for some reason. Another big buyer?
-Copper - Khemetri has Copper, but is not competing. Probably because they use it all.
-Bronze - Khemetri has Bronze, but is not competing. Probably because they use it all
-Slaves - Khemetri have slaves. Well they probably had slaves all along, but we just got it visible.
-Pilgrimage - Still unchanged for now, but the Games will probably change that soon.

Minions are being quiet

Best of the Best had evolved:
Best of the Best
Whether in war or in art, the People want only the best, damn the costs
Pros: Increase Martial gain from raising elite units, bonus Art and Mysticism for certain actions
Cons: Increased potential Martial loss in fighting, increased social stratification, increased costs
Life of Arete
A well lead life is one of excellence in all things, from the stitch of cloth to prowess on the battlefield to skill in oration. The best and finest is thus demanded of and by all to show their virtue and honour.
Pros: Increase Martial gain from raising elite units; bonus Culture, Tech and/or Mysticism for certain actions; effect of criticals and doubles greatly increased
Cons: Increased potential Martial loss in fighting, increased social stratification, increased costs
Interestingly, Arete means elitism is not just for the elites anymore!
It doesn't matter if you are not one of the social elite, but that you must excel in your own nature to have any selfrespect.
We're getting bonus tech fallout now, and boosted criticals. Not that we see the dice much, but this is always good stuff.

Especially Heroic Criticals. Those would be a treat.

As expected, theres no legacy for dual wielding megaprojects, but at least it lays that to rest.
Evolved Games comparison:
The Games - An organized series of athletic events and mock battles to maintain fighting trim and vent the aggression of less composed warriors, this also helps foster friendly rather than destructive rivalry between major settlements. Increases Martial Tolerance by 2, gives +1 Culture for every 2 True Cities, and opens up new possibilities.
International Games - An organized series of athletic events and mock battles to maintain fighting trim and vent the aggression of less composed warriors, this also helps foster friendly rather than destructive rivalry between major settlements and kingdoms, bringing significant glory to all. Increases Martial Tolerance by 3 for participants and by an additional 2 for the host, gives +1 Culture for every 2 True Cities within a kingdom, gives +1 Diplomacy a turn for the host for every other participant, gives a pool of Prestige equal to the number of participants that is divided among the participants each turn depending on their performance, and the host kingdom gains Culture whenever another kingdom in contact with them completes The Games megaproject.
So we got a lot of bullshit:
-Reduced strife between kingdoms. The Games means that participants will always have some level of diplomatic contact, meaning that if they fight it's because of real issues, rather than cultural misunderstandings.
-The Games encourage participants to never quit. Anyone participating can(and will) maintain a larger army, but losing 3 points off the cap would plunge them into red martial and subsequent acts of dumb.
-If we invite everyone we know there will be 7(or 4) Diplomacy drip per turn. Which is huge as hell. @Academia Nut is this every other as in odd number of participant or every other as in not counting the host?
-If we invite everyone we know, there will be 8 points of Prestige to win every year. Presumably it'd go Winner 50%, Runner Up 30%, Second Runner Up 20% split, which would give us 4/3/1 prizes for the top three. However, this advantages the guy with Arete as the host, since we'd have people training all the time. :p
--Anyone who wants to have a go at winning will have to build their own Games to train up dudes. Which will give us free Culture, though it will also remove them from being held hostage by the Games on their martial cap, since their own games would make the drop 1 rather than 3.
-If we invite everyone we'd get their best warriors hooked on Ymaryn hookers, so if their state collapses we know where they will run to. :p

Overall it's a very good thing for the King of the Hill and considering our Legacies, it encourages those who want to Take the Crown to beat us at the Games instead of triggering The Hulk.

Provinces actions and the economy sheet are congruent with Double Symphony triggers.
Policies finished both aqueducts in one turn. This thing is FAST.
Western Wall built that mine they asked us about previously, but are surveying for another. Better keep the Tech ready.
Greenshore are doing the walled settlement walk further.
Gulvalley are fixing their lack of an army, and they'd probably be fine now that they stopped panicking.
Heaven's Hawks are fighting some of the Random Nomads out there. Probably got raided?
Txolla chan what are you doing with that army?
Tinriver is pumping Econ for something big?

"Lord Djebipt, Master of All, the Sun Made Flesh, He Who Makes the Waters Flow, wishes for you to repeat your explanation of your request, Delegate from the Ymaryn King," the translator passed on to the most recent delegation from that distant but powerful land to come to his kingdom.

"In recent years we have been holding contests across our kingdom where the most skilled come to compete and demonstrate who all is the greatest at various skills - archery, running, wrestling, javelin throwing, various physical games we play - with the winners being recognized as being the greatest at that particular task and among the finest among us, at least until the next contest. In efforts to promote understanding between kingdoms, we wish to extend to you an invitation to send your own competitors. We are of the opinion that your own youths would be able to make a strong showing in the competitions if you chose to send any over," the delegate explained.
I hope we have boat racing as an event, but I'm not sure if it's going to be any good for an international competition when the Trelli are the only other contestants

Their king is a little bit confused about what we're up to. It's normal. All our neighbors do that.

Reshemhetari leaned forward on his throne and then glanced over at his eldest sons, who were just past their adulthood and obviously had received extensive warrior training. There was some unspoken dialogue between them before the king made his proclamation, passed along as, "The Lord Djebipt accepts your offer and commands that his second son and a selection of the finest warriors of the land accompany you back to your home, both as guards and as competitors."

The delegates were quite pleased at this news. The crown prince was obviously not something they could expect to get on the first attempt, but the second in line to the throne was as best as they could possibly expect.
Second in line huh?

Several months later as their ship was within sight of Redshore, the delegates had only one thing to say.

"It's... uhh... it's not supposed to be on fire?"
Well...something had to catch fire eventually :V
Our first city fire incidentally, and fortunately the aqueduct finished in time to make firefighting easier.
Probably a diplomatic incident considering the Diplomacy -1 and Wealth -2 for fixing that.

At least it makes rearranging the city for the Docks and Games easier?

"So... what happened?" Hertythyn asked the investigatory council about the 'incident' at Redshore just before the games were to commence. The various figures under him would give their reports and then he could pass it along to the king.

"The city grew too fast for its own good," the first investigator reported. "With all the construction at the docks, all the activity from the games, all the trade flowing in and out... it just grew too fast and people started cutting corners on construction standards."
Corruption issues.
Cut corners are one of the first things done, because well, surely overengineering it like that is a waste of effort.

Fix with a Restore Order + Proclaim Glory combo. We'd need a Genius Admin to pull it off perfectly however.

"I agree, but that was only half of it," a second investigator chimed in. "The games attracted many young men seeking glory, and all the construction had them stick around as labourers when that more often than not didn't quite pan out. Witnesses agree that the fire started after the initial riot, and the riot merely exacerbated the fire by interfering with the formation of a bucket chain."
Overmartial problem. Riot triggered, but while quelled, it impeded firefighting.
Solution: Resettle or finish one of our proto-provinces to spread the idiots out.

Everyone glanced at the third man, who groused, "The riot was part of a larger pattern and problem, namely that there are criminal elements operating within our society that we need to crack down on. Redshore has simply become one of the places that they base from. Piracy is growing far worse and is taking a bite out of legitimate trade, as well as nipping at the Trelli colony and increasing tensions with them."
Overmartial + Corruption. We'd need to root out crime and fortunately we have the tools for it.

Hertythyn nodded at that and said, "There have been requests for Redshore to have more freedom in dealing with some of its issues?"

"There have, although we think that some of them may grow worse," the first investigator reported.

"Or perhaps the Shadow King will reveal himself if he is allowed to have the city as his personal fief in law as well as fact," the third man said, half-sarcastically and half out of paranoia.

"There are certainly administrative issues at play either way," Hertythyn said, waving the longstanding argument away.
This is not entirely unprecedented, given the choice it sometimes happen that crimelords will turn legit. Sometimes.

"One wonders at the upcoming election," the third investigator asked, eliciting grumbles from the rest. King and council had called for a new election to become heir, and many of the current crop of candidates had issues. Most of the field were... not particularly good, with the best and most likely among them rather mediocre all around.
Arete triggering because our nobility are not Excellent enough!
The one semi-serious competitor was the beloved war hero Yenyna, but the phrase "obvious puppet" could apply no better, and most who knew her knew that she was enjoying living in comfort with her husband away from loud noises and stressful situations. Weirdly, while those cawing for war with the Highlanders for their past treachery the moment the treaty with them expired were often interested in having her lead the armies, many were actually split on the issue. She was a damaged hero who deserved her rest, even if she would also be of great use in leading their armies onward to victory.
Even though she's brilliant, dumping the Kingdom on her is just abusive. If there is a war, she can be a general, but not the King. She doesn't deserve the nest of vipers.
Finally, his own subordinates were pushing for Hertythyn himself to run. Everyone knew that he would do a good job and could win fairly easily, what with knowing where all the bodies were buried - figuratively and literally - but he had enough hassles implementing policy rather than coming up with it. Of course, if duty weren't everything to him he would have found a way to embezzle large amounts of money and retire to one of the finer brothels in Redshore or Blackmouth long ago. Some of the older families also wouldn't like him being king, seeing him as having risen from an unimportant house far too quickly, but he knew the right people to talk to to get Reshemhetari to send up one of his older daughters to secure his legitimacy on that front.
Well...he has a good heart certainly. And interesting retirement plans.

And here some of the more annoying aspects of the hereditary pressure growing is showing. He arranged to marry a foreign princess to get enough pull to shut down the naysayers, but we'd be seeing it get worse before it gets better.

The Gymnasium listed as a non-familial training facility is great for fixing this. It gives us an avenue for martial elites to arise outside of the usual lines.

AN: I got distracted by things, so half-update now, half-update tomorrow. Apologies[/left]

And we have a coming mid-turn, which we can deal with Games events, possibly finish the docks(we're currently 0-2 actions from completion), build a new settlement to cope with overmartial, resettle the excess warriors or get started on rooting out crime(Secondary Restore Order + Secondary Proclaim Glory is normally slightly risky, but a Heroic Admin can do it without issues).
Since we're only at Overmartial +1, raising Stability to 3 should fix things for now.
