A Magical Person Quest (Working Title)

Okay, based on the short description, you'd be right. I had extrapolated based on previous experience with like martial arts in anime and manga and the like. I had assumed we'd likely be capable of such feats, as any punch we throw would likely have such an effect on accident(or by choice), or would use like Ki and pretty much blast a target apart on hit. Or however it would work.

Now, I'd say that might still be possible, but Magical Girls and Magical Knights both have the highest likelihood of such actions without extrapolation and everything. Take these understands as you will I suppose :)
I was thinking along the lines of "punches that make things go boom" being a rather basic ability, with more advanced stuff including "kick that inflicts a magical form of paralysis" (or "my foot is a magical taser").

The three options are pretty similar for each gender, with the difference being tropes associated with males and females. Think Mars versus Venus here.

Magic Knight and Magical Girl are equipment based. The Magic Knight is War and Violence theme, typical male imagery, while Magical Girl is more Pure and Love theme, typical female imagery.

Wizard and Witch are pure magic based with a Wizard studying brute force and a Witch focusing on utility.

Magical Martial Artists and Enchantresses are body based with Magical Martial Artists focusing on the physical body while Enchantresses are more mental based.

They separate into the Fighter/Mage/Thief archetypes pretty well with the gender based tropes being behind them. In DnD class terms I'm seeing it as the males being Figgters, Sorcerers, or Monks while females choosing between Paladins, Wizards, and Rogues. Same type/rolls, but females have more flexible classes to the males more combat based ones.

Analysis already. I am such a happy QM!

From the description, the martial arts one sounded more like using magic to make yourself supernaturally strong, agile, and resilient, and sounded like it excluded "use your fists as a means of hitting a target with magical effects".

I'll cut in here. The closest to what you're describing would actually be magical girl's magical items as far as percussive application goes, though I will say that I am not commenting on any development paths for your magic.

Ah, screw it. I'm curious to see how this vote would be handled, and what challenges we'd come across. It could be social, mindgames, wacky shapeshifting shenanigans or more!

I could be convinced to change my vote though; I'm still on the fence.

No problem. Overthinking and analyzing anything and everything is a favorite pastime of mine.

Your system interested me enough to actually do it which is a first for me this early in a quest.

On the subject of strength versus variety, the gender choice is between the two while the class choice is the secondary focus imo. Male is strength and female is variety. For males, the secondary focus is Mixed for Magic Knight, Variety for Wizard, and Strength for Magical Martial Artist. For females, the secondary focus for Magical Girl is Strength, Variety for Witch, and Mixed for Enchantress.

For example, a Magic Knight would have sets with elemental effects, a fire sword and armor of cold resistance to use against ice based enemies. A Wizard would have a wide and powerful set of spells to use but limited in usage or amount of spells chosen. A Magical Martial Artist would be the perfection of the body and end up like a DBZ character, really strong but can only really punch people.

Meanwhile, a Magical Girl encompasses a wide variety of abilities and effects, with all generally being really strong. A Witch will have the most effective solution to any situation, but has to leverage it correctly or her strength won't be enough. An Enchantress has illusions and mental spells to trick and fool their way through life, and if that doesn't work they're now a bear.

With only one vote in the last 12 hours, it looks like things are slowing down. I'll probably close the vote "soonish"

It looks like Enchantress is winning by 2 votes, 18 to 16 over Magical Knight.

There's still time to cause a tie.

Hmmm, only two votes so far today, so I feel like it's safe to say things have slowed down. I think I'll lock it so I can start finalizing things.

Votes Locked

Looks like Enchantresses wins. Congratulations, you're a girl!

Awaken 2

You might have magical powers, but school is still school, with all the wonders and horrors that accompany high school life. You're only in your second period of the day, English, and already feel like your brain has been reduced to mush and your soul is trying to escape its body. You want the day to end already, so you can go learn magic. Instead, you have five periods to go after this, where you won't learn much at all. Normally it isn't this bad, but you never were good at being patient, and the fact that you have a substitute instead of your regular English teacher just makes it worse. He isn't even trying, having just handed a short worksheet out to everyone before retreating behind his desk to drink coffee. You let out a small sigh, and you triple check your completed worksheet. Even if you cut class, it wouldn't do you any good. All your fellow "enchantresses" were also in school.

Your cast a quick glance across the room at Bethany. You share two classes with her, in addition to sharing the whole magic thing. She was the one that approached you, to 'invite you into the world of magic,' but here in class she doesn't really stand out. She looks just as bored as you are, fiddling with her braid, dressed nicely in a cream skirt and purple plaid blouse which isn't quite in fashion. It's hard to reconcile how mundane she is, and how, for lack of a better word, enchanting she looks when she activates her magic powers.

It does make you feel a bit better, though. Just like her, when you transform you become something more.

The thought makes you extra aware of the bracelet on your left wrist, and you run your thumb along the fine, delicate chain. Every enchantress has some piece of jewelry that unlocks their full power, and yours is a silver charm bracelet with three charms: a key, a moon, and a cat. You aren't sure about the other two, but the cat is supposedly a reference to Morganna, the most powerful enchantress in the world. She apparently likes to show off by turning into a cat, though you've never met her personally. It had been years since she had stopped by to check in on things, but that wasn't surprising given she had the whole world to look after.

"Hey, Maeve. Since you're spacing out, I'm guessing you already did the math homework?"

You startle slightly, before looking over to the girl sitting next to you. Emma Bierly, a straightforward girl who is a little on the chubby side, probably counts as your closest friend in this school. You share four classes with her, and she doesn't seem interested in the uncomfortable little games for social status that a lot of the other girls seem to play. She's giving you a grin, no doubt for having made you jump, and you notice she isn't even bothering with pretending to work on the worksheet, with her math book and calculator out on her desk.

"Well, yeah. It's due next period," you reply dryly, leaning over to check her progress. "Are you going to finish in time, Em?"

"Nope! I need you to rescue me," she says, in a tone halfway between serious and joking.

You sigh, and the larger girl scoots her chair over to make room for you.

How do you help Emma?
[x] Just let her copy yours. It's faster, and the homework is usually just checked for completion, so it's the same result in the end.
[x] It's important that she learns this. Only help her through the problem's she is having trouble with.
[x] Making sure she understands the material is more important than finishing. Just double check what she's already done.

A few minutes pass as you and Emma get started, and you take the opportunity to double check some of your own work, catching a minor error or two. Of course, a minor error in math still means you have a wrong answer, so you're glad you caught them.

It isn't long until Bethany slides into the open seat beside the two of you, and a quick glance shows that pretty much everyone has abandoned the pretense of working on the worksheet to socialize. She gives you a smile, which you tentatively return. It's not unusual for her to pop up and chat for a few minutes before wandering away, it's something she does with just about everyone. Now it feels different, though, since you have a secret in common. Almost thrilling.

"Making your usual rounds, Bethany?" Emma says, not bothering to look up from where she is furiously writing away.

"Oh, you know me," Bethany says with a wink, "There are just so many people to talk to, catch up with, et cetera, et cetera. You know, Em, one of these days you'll have all your homework done ahead of time. What will you even do with yourself?"

"Oh, you know me," Emma echoes, "I always have something to do. I'm pretty sure that's a law of the universe."

"So, uh, hi!" you say, interjecting yourself into the conversation. "How was your weekend, Bethany?"

You haven't seen her since she had given you your bracelet and helped with your first magic lesson, which had gone really well, at least according to Bethany.

What did you learn?
Select one from each category.
Enchanting Others
You learned the very basics of using your magic to beguile others. These enchantments are weak enough that they can be used by most enchantresses a handful of times untransformed.
[x] Basic Illusion : A very basic visual illusion, a static image, some light, or a moving silhouette is the limit of this spell.
[x] Influence Feeling : Induces a general feeling or mood in a person, be it fear, apathy, or happiness.
[x] Direct Attention : Making a gesture, the enchantress directs the attention of everyone who sees her to the indicated object.
Enchanting Yourself
You learned the very basics of using your magic to benefit yourself. These enchantments are weak enough that they can be used by most enchantresses a handful of times untransformed.
[x] Focus : A spell lasting an hour that lets you hyper focus on a particular task. While very useful for keeping your grades up, it's actively detrimental in a combat environment.
[x] Make up Minute : Cleans and gets you ready in a mere minute, useful to both save time in the morning and clean up after fighting to protect humanity.
[x] Pick Me Up : Improves how you feel, reducing felt aches, pains, and fatigue. Based on an automatic function of your bracelet, this is mostly useful in mundane life.
Shapeshifting
You've learned the basics of shapeshifting. It's quite expensive, with changing and then changing back using most of an enchantress's energy in their transformed state. It's currently limited to any animal that you're pretty familiar with, and only up to 200% or down to 80% of your mass (260lbs-104lbs). What can you transform into?
[x] A cougar
[x] An Akita (dog breed}
[x] A human, who is embarrassingly a celebrity
[x] Write-in (subject to veto)

Bethany is just about reply when a voice cuts across the room, and your stomach sinks.

"May B. Walsh!" The athletic looking girl bounding up to your desk is, as far as you can tell, your own personal nemesis. Having never been in public school before, you hadn't thought twice before you had introduced yourself in class as 'Maeve Beatrice Walsh,' which had resulted in a few people pointedly referring to you by all three names as a joke... but she had come up with her very own little nickname for you, insisting on calling you 'May B.,' because it sounded like 'maybe,' oh my gosh, wasn't that so clever?!

And that's how Hannah had entered into your life. You are fortunate to only have two periods with her, but you have to share gym class with the girl. She bothers you constantly in gym, always showing off and humiliating you every chance she could get. And it is even worse than normal, because gym class is special.

It is special because it is your only class with William, a really cute guy whom you had gotten to talk to on the first day, who had seemed really funny and nice. However, you haven't been able to say a word to him since. A small bit of that is that you just aren't quite sure how to approach him, but mostly it's Hannah just being so amazingly loud and attention grabbing and around you constantly that you have no hope of not being forced to the background.

"May B., I heard it, but I knew it just couldn't be true!" she declares, causing others in class to look over in your direction.

"Hannah, what can't be true?" you respond, forcing yourself to keep your tone polite.

"Well, I know you don't always hang out with the right crowd," she says, glancing over Emma and Bethany, "But I know you wouldn't join that so-called "club" of theirs."

"I did," you say flatly. Hannah only blinks at you in confusion for a moment.

"Sorry, Hannah, she joined last Thursday," Bethany cuts in, sounding apologetic. Hannah stares at her for a moment, face slowly reddening.

"Well, I guess I was wasting my time with you," she seethes, before dramatically turning to walk away. Her hip catches the edge of the Math textbook, and it clatters to the floor, along with half of Emma's homework.

"Oh, sorry," Hannah says in a tone that means anything but. Did she do that on purpose?!

What do do you do?
Note: Please vote by plan. If you want her to say something, just throw ideas out and we'll take the best of what the thread thinks of. Also, in general for the quest, your reasoning for your vote will impact Maeve's motivations and thoughts. If no one offers any reasoning at all, she'll have done it thoughtlessly, with the emotions that led her to it left at the tender mercies of your QMs.

Admittedly, this option may make half of SV recoil in horror. I bet there are people here who feel pain just from reading this option. ^_^

[x] A human, who is embarrassingly a celebrity

1. Subtly very powerful.
2. Pays off in the long-run, allowing her to learn many topics faster. I bet the QMs wished they had this power too. :p
3. Was gonna vote for the fluffy dog. But this option is so ridiculous yet familiar. *horrified Disney Channel flashbacks*

[x] Say something scathing.

Err...I like this option, but I'm not sure about crowdsourcing high school insults. There are definitely some pretty cruel ones. >_>

I actually do hyper focus on things if I try. It does make learning things easier, but I risk fixating on random things (defined as not what I'm supposed to be doing right now) sometimes, so I usually try to avoid that mindset.

As for crowd-sourcing insults, if you don't want it to be too cruel, suggest something that isn't too cruel. Easy enough. :V

[x] A German Sheperd.

[O] Say Something Scathing:
Goddamn it I suck at making up insults that don't make me sound like an idiot. Anyone have an idea?
