Neji already said she was a part of her soul earlier. Honestly in Karin's position my guess would be 'dunno, reincarnation or something?'

[jk] I suppose it could be a variation of the Hidden Prince/Princess trope. Kaien and Miyako could be my parents. The pregnancy and birth was hidden because they wanted me to have a mortal life. They found a nice couple to raise me. Once Kaien realized that he would die, he ordered his zanpakuto to search for his heir. Upon my death, Nejibana found and saved me. Now it's up to me my to reclaim my rightful place as a dead magical samurai queen! I could also be a Mordred type. The hidden bastard of the prince sent away to avoid a succesion fight. Maybe I am Kaien, ressurected with dark magic by a grief stricken family. Hidden from sight so that the authorities would not find out their terrible crime, but they almost did anyway! As a last resort they altered my memories and body, and found a nice couple to take care of me. I don't know much about spiritual matters, but those the options that would be given in a video game. Does any of those options sound plausible?

I'm not in the mood to wade through several pages to find the leading vote, so could anyone tell me if the bandwagon mentions the possibility of reincarnation? Because that's the most likely assumption with our IC knowledge.

It doesn't. Partially because I don't think reincarnation has actually come up at any point IC?

The explanation about hollows, pluses and soul society contains it. Soul Society acts as a buffer for souls to wait in until they are reincarnated. Hell, the whole point of that flaming chicken masquerading as a halberd they have sitting on that one hill is that it completely obliterates a soul, preventing it from ever reincarnating again.

So it follows that (with our IC knowledge) if Nejibana, and zanpakuto spirits in general are literally part of their wielder's soul, and our spirit formerly belonged to a now long since dead shinigami, we are the reincarnation of said shinigami. Since it wouldn't make sense for the soul to fragment during reincarnation and for one particular fragment perfectly attaching to another soul without any issues whatsoever. We have proof in the form of extra knowledge and skills we shouldn't have and the fact that we (almost) instantly recognised Nejibana as part of us, with her confirming and consenting to it.

[X] I understand why Nejibana is so important to you, if I lost Yuzu, Ichigo, or Goat Chin, I would be crushed; but the only thing I did to bring her out was have a desire to not die. I don't know why it happened I'm just glad it did. You are the expert here, is there any natural way a sword can get a new wielder after they die.

Hm, Karin is aware of the cycle of reincarnation, but it's a bit of a stretch...
