A Light from the Shadow (Tolkien CKII)

[X] To be in the presence of Melkor, was to know wisdom. Of all the Aïnur he seemed the most wise, always rushing to answer the questions of the Allfather, always eager to teach what he knew, to share what he thought. When he made the Discord, you didn't think of evil but you simply followed the teacher you chose. If he decided to go against Eru's overt design, there must have been a reason, some secret plan you weren't privy off. You followed him on Arda for you believed in his wisdom and he shared with you many things on the working on the world, even secrets taken from the Void during his lonely errands.

[x] You hate yourself for becoming numb to pain and evil as they occurred around you. You despise your cowardice as you took your rage on lesser beings but let the fire in your heart die. You did not embrace evil wholeheaterdly, at least not in the beginning, but you didn't speak against it let alone act to slow things down, even when Melkor would accept counsel. You renounced the good of the intellect and became a dumb beast, hurting to hurt and killing to kill, with no zeal but numb apathy.

[X] You long for the certainty you felt at Morgoth's side. In Angband His word was law and he didn't leave even his most powerful servants much room to rebel or to move. There were no conflict, no uncertainty, no fear. He commanded and you obeyed. Now even Nienna's mandate leaves you much choices and you confess you are afraid.

[X] Even if he amended himself, you cannot see Melkor take the role he was meant to take at the beginning of time. Too much power was squandered for that. Yet he could take a role in creation. Perhaps he could wed Nienna who mourns for what never was and complement her by longing for what will never be. They would not make a happy couple in the strictest sense but them that's not their role in creation.

[x] You hate yourself for being so easily misled. Melkor was ever the liar you see that now, he lied even to himself. Yet you followed him willingly, ensnared by his promises, dazzled by his radiance. You thought you were being good, perhaps even that you still served Eru's great purpose and were still on the side of the Father's. Perhaps you thought Melkor being a reflection of his thoughts meant your acts were condoned. You spread the lies of Melkor through your actions and your commands, leading at least some souls in the service of the Shadow.

These three have a sort of synergy to them I think. We envied his wisdom, we hate how he used it to mislead us, and now? Now we are afraid because we were never as wise as him, and we have so many choices to make.

Then we have this one.

[x] You still love and admire him. Not what he became but what he was, what he could still be. Eru created him as the most powerful of the Ainur and gave him the greater part of all energies. Even wounded and marred, having forsook the power he was given to embrace another, he still commands part of your respect. He could be great again, if only he could simply bow and accept other will than his exist and matter.

Still envious.

[X] Love, it was love. How could you not love Him? He was, even before the world was the most sublime of all Eru's creation, endowed with all powers and all majesty. He was power and wisdom true but it paled with the chance to simply be with Him, at His sides as he shaped the world to make it a mirror of his beauty. You loved Him and you love what He made, the ice falling in deadly shards, the fire coming in scarlet ribbons. Your nature was of fire, as befitted your passion but for Him you took the mantle of night and embodied the contradiction of elements, as best as you could.

[X] You long for the absence of the limits you had when you followed the Shadow. You felt as if nothing could constrain you, as you were free to do everything. Melkor was the wellspring of infinite potential and he promised freedom from all limits and all chains. Now you have willingly put yourself in the service of another and gladly so but you still remember the urge to do simply whatever you want.

[X] You hate yourself for you believed wholeheartedly in Melkor's cause. You understood it perfectly. You saw his thoughts change from desiring the Light to hating it and you changed with him. You understood his rebellion against Eru Allfather and decided to bear arms in his service. No atrocity was enough, no crime was enough to make the creator pay for refusing to let you alter the world to your liking. Melkor deserved your worship, he deserved to have his own world, or at least the crown of Arda and the adoration of the other Valar.

[X] Melkor deserved his name in the beginning. He was indeed He Who Arises in Might, the Strong. Even in the Timeless Halls his nature expressed itself and to be in his presence was to know power, was to feel as being in the presence of power, shaped by it, even more strongly than in the presence of Eru. You wanted to be part of this power, to feel as he felt. When he declared his rebellion during the Music, you admired his resolve. He stood straight against the Father's rebuke and that was enough. You descended with him in Arda and took a form of power, fit for being a vessel of physical strength and destruction. As he was stronger than you even in the very end, you didn't think of questioning him.
[X] You hate yourself for you believed wholeheartedly in Melkor's cause. You understood it perfectly. You saw his thoughts change from desiring the Light to hating it and you changed with him. [X] Even as a servant of Nienna you don't think Morgoth will ever seek redemption. The Valar thought so for they threw him into the Void without the possibility to plead his cause. To abase himself before another, even the Allfather is contrary to Morgoth's very essence. He is nothing but the Black Foe of the world now and all traces of his light are but fading memories.

Lord of Dreams part 2 :
Lord of Dreams part 2 :
Before the world was born. Before the Music. Before perhaps even the birth of Aïnur, offspring of the thought of Eru Illiuvatar, there was Love and love was with Eru and love was Eru. How could it be otherwise? Eru is father to all and isn't a father's essence to love the children of his thought and the product of his flesh? In the beginning Eru was alone and being love he created the Aïnur to love them and be loved in return. As for the flame of Will who give substance and existence to what would only be dreams, none of the Holy Ones had power over Love and yet all felt it, some more keenly than others. You were born of fire, you were made to burn, and burn you did with love for wisdom, and thus, love for Melkor.

Beautiful was Melkor in the times of his splendor. More beautiful than tongue can name or mind can imagine, more beautiful than the image you saw in the dreams. Wise was Melkor in the time before his fall for he had received the greatest part of Eru's gifts and his mind was more alike the All-Father than any of the Aïnur. You followed the twin lights and wisdom even to rebellion, even to Discord. Did you think you were going against Eru's design. Perhaps but Melkor's music was so beautiful, so powerful, so passionate, it made you burn with desire to follow it. You were not alone. A third of the Aïnur and some of the greatest followed him during the Music. Together you created winter that chills bones and hatred to gnaw at minds. Maïron not yet called Sauron crafted the mortal crystals of sulfur and the light-giving phosphorus. Others created other things, hurtful and yet necessary to the world that is. Or perhaps Eru and intended the lion to lay with the lamb?

Why did you do nothing? Why did you remain silent? Others of your very order tried to. Others, of your very order descended through fire and shadow trying to catch Melkor as he fell It is just fire became only your mantle and your core was replaced by nothingness and darkness. You hid from your thoughts, your quelled your passions, you lashed out against those who could not defend themselves. Thus it is just you fell and diminished became shadowy and bestial like the master you chose. Nienna's gift restored your intellect, restored your capacity for reason. You like that. And you don't.

Sometimes when weakness overtakes you, you long for the certainty you felt in the armies of Morgoth. Morgoth was Power and Dominion, his will filled your spirit and the vestment of flesh it wove around itself, forcing them to move in the direction he wished. Such breaking of the will of one's followers is anathema to the Valar who are bound to respect free-will. Without freedom, there can be no responsibility and no judgement. You fear judgement and you fear failure but these are the fruits of freedom, bittersweet as they are.

Yet despite that you still love Melkor rather than the abomination he became. You understand your patron, weeping yourself for something who could have been, who should have been. You don't know if Melkor will ever be again, let alone amend himself and truly seek the forgiveness of the Maker. Yet compassion is issued to everyone and redemption must remain an open path. Your mandate is hope and in this hope you trust.

Such as your reflections as the landscape change to become a sublime garden. Poppies and lotuses litter the ground as tall trees reach through the sky sheltering you under their shadow. There is no evil in this shade, no terror in this night. It is soothing darkness, the appointed time for rest the world needs. You hear nightingales softly singing in the branches while water bubbles nearby. And you see Him coming to you wreathed in dreams and gossamer.

How different he is from his estranged brother. Different and yet so much alike in some ways. He wears the face of the Firstborn, a face of eternal youth with eyes full of secret wisdom. His skin is black a mirrored obsidian and his clothes are brown and white silk bearing patterns of constellations. His white hair is crowned with flowers. He bears no weapons, only a staff of living wood surrounded by two serpents. His eyes are white and in them you see worlds being born and heroes and kings and nightmares and dreams. In his eyes, you see worlds beyond Arda, ephemeral fancies but so important for the dreamer who crafted them. He looks at you so sweetly and is not repulsed even as he knows all your thoughts. Irmo, master of which is hidden, lord of dreams, of inspiration, of passion, brothers to the lady you serve with your heart.
You kneel before him, thinking that perhaps you have displeased him, that perhaps he hates you, but his voice resonates in your mind, soft as silk and soothing as night.

"Hate is not a word here, little one. Namo, Nienna and I are of a same mind and of a same music. Hate and wrath are not our purview. Your idea was sound and your charges are in my gardens, tended by my servants. For them there will be no more nightmares, no more pain at night. For it is my will that the mind should not torment itself during the time of its rest." He gestures to you.

"And this I say to you Morianor. Dark have been your dreams during your service to the Shadow, for what Morgoth has he doesn't release even to hope, but you have embraced Light anew and deserve healing. As your followers will find the way to this shadow of my gardens, so will you to resource yourself and taste what you have achieved. For I am lord not only over the tidings of the night but also of the projects of the hearth and to me has been given the charge of passion since Morgoth left our circle.

Yet a present I will give to you now as you entered the service of my sister I love most of all." He strike with his staff three times and each times a spring rises from the ground.

The first is green and it smells of poppies and lotuses. You know without knowing it brings the gift of forgetfulness. To drink of it would be to allow dark memories to sleep and your being to be soothed. You would regain some of your innate splendor, being washed of your sins by this drink.

The second is red and it smells of the coppery tang of blood and iron yet you feel no evil in it. You know without knowing it brings the gift of memory. To drink of it would be to allow your being to be forged and sharpened. You would remember what you did during your service to the Shadow and yet still serves the Light.

The third is black as a starless night and it smells of things you don't have words to. You know without knowing it brings the gift of wisdom, letting you see many things who were, who are and could be. To drink of it would be to have your eyes opened but you cannot foresee in which ways, it is the water of dreams, of the unknown.

Of which spring do you drink.

[] Forgetfulness
[] Memory
[] Unknown

[x] Memory

We shall confront our inner demons, overcome them, and walk towards a brighter future.

It would also make it easier to understand those who are lost in Shadow, and can help in guiding them towards the Light.
