Hellgate Hotel: A Quest of Friendship and Demons

The update is coming along, but here are the new mechanics which will shortly be added to the Rules Compendium.

Relationship Levels
On the Dramatis Personae listing, each entry has a Relationship Level. This is an integer between -3 and 3, which is a scale of how close Maria Francisca and the other person are, to the best of her ability to assess the relationship. In most cases, this is a single number that reflects both directions; if Maria Francisca's assessment is that she and the other person have significantly different feelings about one another, both numbers will be provided.

A rating of 0 indicates lack of particular sentiment, either due to ignorance, low levels of interaction, or exceedingly neutral interactions.
A rating of magnitude 1 indicates a mild but noticeable sentiment, unlikely to impel action on its own.
A rating of magnitude 2 indicates a significant feeling, capable of prompting action even if other motivations or values are not relevant.
A rating of magnitude 3 indicates a life-defining relationship which regularly motivates actions even against countervailing pressures.

Other characters will also have feelings about one another, and this might cause Maria Francisca's relationships to "cascade" -- if two people feel strongly positively about each other, Maria Francisca having a negative relationship with one will likely also be the case with the other, and if two people feel strongly negatively about each other, building a strong positive relationship with one will cap the maximum level or even have negative effects on the other.

Timeslots
The fundamental "turn structure" of the quest is a fairly simple one: you have a bunch of places you can go and people you can hang out with, and five timeslots in a given day to do things with. The timeslots are as follows: Daybreak, Morning, Noon, Afternoon, and Evening. As a rule of thumb, each timeslot represents about three hours, but don't fixate too much on that number because there is a lot of "invisible" activity that also has to take place between onscreen actions. Some special actions may take multiple timeslots, but in general there is a one-to-one mapping. Some actions will take place automatically, such as Maria Francisca spending her first timeslot on Deepwinter 26 reading the profiles of other heroes.

The standard locations you can go to are the Seafoam Lounge, Hearthfire Grille, Hotel Gardens, Dueling Grounds, Town Square, Amphisbaena Tavern, and Hellgate. Spending a timeslot in a location causes Maria Francisca to engage with any other character or characters who happen to be there at the same time as you, doing the sort of thing one does at that place. Different characters will favor different standard locations. All of these are optional: Maria Francisca will still eat even if you never visit the Grille, she will still be able to shop for necessities if you never visit the Town Square, etc. These activities will simply not have narrative focus if they are taking place in the interstices of other things.

The Dueling Grounds deserve special mention because the chief activity that takes place here is combat practice: going to the Grounds means sparring with other Heroes of Vindar who happen to be there and watching them spar with one another. This is one way to develop your own techniques and to learn the capabilities of your fellows; however, others will be able to observe you and learn your own strengths and weaknesses in turn.

There are also three locations that are always available, which are the places to find certain important non-combatant characters: Xiomara Delfin can be found at the Concierge Desk, Miella Leistes can be found at one of the hotel's terraces overlooking the sea nicknamed the Widow's Walk, and Demetrios Harpakrides can be found in the Forge. Occasionally, other Heroes of Vindar might be encountered in these locations, seeking out these characters for their own reasons.

While the Heroes' Room will be automatically checked at the start of every day and whenever Maria Francisca passes by, so as to see news items and notes from other heroes, you can also vote to spend a timeslot there, reading up on four people you have not yet read up on.

Finally, Maria Francisca can seek out a specific other hero or set of heroes, as a write-in option. This requires a Relationship of +1 with each. Assembling a larger specific group will be more difficult for the same reasons "get exactly these N people together" is harder in real life for larger values of N, and may result in you needing to make do with who you can find, but success is always guaranteed for one-on-one interactions.

In addition to these default options, additional opportunities may arise in response to circumstances.

Relationship Levels haven't yet been added to the Dramatis Personae, but will by the time the update comes out. The locations will have more flavor text description in the actual sandbox votes, but the rules section just needs their names.

Did it already have that name or do the guests just name it that once they notice Miella hanging out there and sighing wistfully at the sea?
Widow's walks are a thing. The hotel has a particularly scenic one, which just got called "The Widow's Walk" on the helpful maps and signs, that Miella has chosen to make her own. You can ask her why she picked it as her hangout spot, if you really want to.

Miella Leistes can be found at one of the hotel's terraces overlooking the sea nicknamed the Widow's Walk
oof

For clarity on exactly how bad of a time she's having: is this "she actually spends all day here" or just "she's here frequently enough that for game-mechanical convenience she'll be present any time Maria Francisca decides to go there"?

Putting these two points together - am I correct in assuming that we won't get explicit information on who's where when deciding where to go? Presumably once we get a handle on favored haunts we can make educated guesses but it sounds like they're liable to move around at least somewhat, such that the more targeted "find this person" option for positive relationships will be the most efficient way of interacting with a specific target, as well as the obvious utility for assembling particular groups if we have something bigger in mind. Is that basically the gist?

Also, for targeted interactions, can we also specify a location (e.g. "get these people together for a training session in the Dueling Grounds"), or is that out of our hands/down to context?

Closing the vote now so I can start thinking the update through while I do things today, and writing will start when those things are thinged.

As a sneak preview, this update will introduce the last two major mechanics of the quest (though there are a few other ones with more limited applications): Timeslots where the sandbox elements of exploring the area and interacting with people more freely open up to you, and Relationships, a mechanic which is different from Social Links by way of being called something else. Which means...

...the mechanics are more dating sim than visual novel, but well done for picking up what I was putting down.

I guess we're playing Fire Emblem now.

For game-mechanical convenience, she will be present during normal game-on hours. You don't know her or her habits well, so to what extent this reflects that she is having a bad time is something you can't get a clear picture of without visiting her.

That's correct. As you get to know people, they may also drop information about where they like to hang out or what their plans for the immediate future are.

Also, for targeted interactions, can we also specify a location (e.g. "get these people together for a training session in the Dueling Grounds"), or is that out of our hands/down to context?

This is possible for you to specify, yes.

Deepwinter 26 (Day 1) -- Part Three New
[*] Stay quiet, letting the group be assembled without your input.
-[*] Consenting if asked.

Tally

After a moment's thought, you decide to keep quiet and let the other heroes answer the question of who is going into the rift. You have some ideas -- Pilpyas might be a great person to send, since controlling the mind of the demon on the other end might help solve the problem of the ley energy outflow faster, and you kind of want to go yourself, both out of sheer curiosity and a feeling that your studies of geomancy might be useful. But, ultimately, you think you don't know enough about what the others are capable of to speak authoritatively, and you don't want to speak foolishly; moreover, you don't know enough about the social landscape, and who your words might either irritate or charm. You can watch and listen as those with more experience make this decision, and learn thereby.

Kiliona Saluni speaks first. "Well, given that you're talking about sending people through a demon portal into who-knows-what, we should send the best fighters, right? I mean, speaking for myself, I've fought plenty but I have no illusions about being the strongest here. Some of you have been fighting wars and monsters for decades." He nods at Lady Durand, but you can feel gazes shifting towards not just her, but the Grand Duke and Fleshwarper as well. She steps forward and nods back, apparently content to leave it at that, but Pilpyas shakes his head.

"I will be most useful on a small team if I am with people who trust me. I think that perhaps, for that reason, either I or the General should go, but not both of us." Before you can work up the courage to ask what he means, or anyone else does for that matter, he turns to the necromancer. "And you? Will your legions be able to enter the rift, limited as it is?"

That's a good point you hadn't considered. Chavash stands there in the field, the massive ox-corpse eerily still behind him, his hands resting on his cane in a manner that somehow belies the notion that he is feeble and using it for support, despite the white hair fluttering in the breeze. He speaks in a measured pace. "I do not know, but I expect so. Grier once told me that my constructs seemed to his power to be extensions of me, and cost him significantly less effort to move than another person would. The only reason I did not bring any to Vindar was because I did not have time to physically gather them. If this rift works by similar principles, then I should still be useful even though demons leave no corpses." He shakes his head. "However, it is too soon. All I have that is combat-effective is this one beast. I have not yet had time to outfit my humaniform constructs with weaponry, let alone reassemble them into stronger amalgamations."

It takes a second, but the meaning behind the terms sinks in, and you can feel yourself blanch. In contrast, Lady Durand's face darkens. "Humaniform constructs... what have you done, necromancer?"

He meets her gaze. "If you had been summoned without your armor or sword, you would have prioritized remedying that, surely? I have done likewise."

"You did not ask about doing this, or even mention it." Her voice is dangerous.

"I do not answer to you, General," he replies, his own calm despite the way his words seem to keep getting more provocative. "I am a sovereign." Unlike you is left unsaid, but you can hear it, and if you can then probably everyone can, and you tense, your power close to hand. This is the sort of thing you heard on the street before a fight broke out.

Professor Kalgrave clears his throat and steps forward, but Lady Durand's hand snaps up in a gesture to stop, and it gives him pause. She takes a slow, deliberate breath. "Outfit them with weaponry as you see fit. But if you desecrate the dead further for the sake of 'amalgamations', I will act to stop you."

"Then what was the purpose of Grier summoning me at all?" he snaps back at her, his previous mien of self-control fading as his grip tightens on his cane. "There is not sufficient raw material available to have an army, and so monsters are the most efficient choice for combat."

"Then you shall have monsters," she says, and his face shows his surprise. "We shall post requests in the town, for reports of monsters and beasts sighted close to town. You shall have aid in dispatching them; I will help you myself, if need be. And then you can wield those against the demons, and when all of this is over return the dead of Vindar to their rest. Is that acceptable?"

He gives her a steady look. "It is," he says, and no more.

There is an awkward silence for a moment before Black Orchid breaks it, the petite Nivvean striding forward. "Well, that still leaves only General Durand going in for now. I would be proud to fight by her side."

"And I," says Stone Lion, hovering in the air near her. "The Knights of the Dream and the Cloud Spear Sect will not refuse the call to arms." You had just been starting to relax but tense again; were they deliberately goading the two who had declined? You look back at them, but they do not seem especially provoked, and it's Professor Kalgrave who jumps in next, without Lady Durand stopping him this time.

"With all due respect to the proud martial tradition of the Empire," he says, sounding only moderately respectful, "I mislike the look of it for Nivveas to field a full two-thirds of the team. Many countries are represented here. With the loss of Anathon, I am his successor at the Academy of High Magic, and so it is my duty to fulfill his wishes and ensure that this phenomenon is properly studied."

"With equal respect," comes the response from Stone Lion, sounding not at all respectful, "my understanding is that you were his second-in-command for the administration of your school, which is not the same as being his heir in every respect, or even in his own field of study. In contrast, I am Lady Red Cloud's second-in-command in all respects, and speak with her voice in Zareas until and unless she countermands me. Besides which: we began by positing that with limited space, we should send, not scholars, but the strongest fighters."

"And so sending me along would be wise," Professor Kalgrave retorts, his face flushed. "I am an Echo Caller, and so the strength of the strong by my side is multiplied."

Stone Lion blinks, apparently not having expected that, but Lady Durand cocks her head. "How would that work with-"

"The Prince and I tested it when I was at the University of Gavis," he interrupts. "I can sustain an apparition. It is not duplicated, but it means more can be active at once."

She frowns, but seems content to let that lie. As other voices rise up -- Remy to volunteer, Steadman to volunteer and also posit that perhaps a representative from each continent would avoid enflaming tensions, Kiliona to say that requiring that would be a bad idea -- you tune the argument out and watch the others. Princess Adelina is listening intently, her face not betraying anything of what she feels or who she favors. Marika has leaned close to Professor Kalgrave and is speaking to him in a low voice, her lips moving quickly. And Leucia Serafin...

The Empress's daughter, like the princess (other princess?) appears to be listening closely, but something seems strange about her appearance. You watch her for a while before you realize what it is: despite the sunny Zarean morning, she isn't casting a shadow. You do your best to look around without being obvious about it, and then you spot it: there's a dark patch moving briskly at the perimeter of the field, like the shadow cast by a cloud except that there is no cloud in the sky and it's moving against the breeze. She appears to be keeping a watch on things outside the field; you can't say you understand why (is she worried about demons that might have gotten away?), but an excess of caution seems unlikely to cause a problem.

[Performance checks - how effective are everyone's arguments?]
[Black Orchid: 2 successes]
[Stone Lion: 4 successes]
[Sebastian Kalgrave: 4 successes]
[Remy Morris: 2 successes]
[Steadman Waite: 2 successes]

Finally, after a lot of impassioned discussion, an agreement is reached, albeit not entirely harmoniously (there is a distinctly mulish set to Black Orchid's jaw). Stone Lion and Professor Kalgrave are to accompany Lady Durand into the rift, and while the three discuss with one another, Kiliona Saluni makes a proposal. "I think it would be a good idea for there to be some of us at the Hellgate or near it at all times," he says. "That way, if another seal breaks and unformed demons attack, the town guard isn't fighting them off by themselves. We were lucky today that there were no casualties before we got here." Remy nods emphatically, and there are general murmurs of agreement from many quarters, with none dissenting. That seems to be the signal for the group to disperse: Kiliona and Marika stay behind, while the others who are not entering the rift head back to the hotel. You walk back, noting as you do that Leucia's shadow is still not back at her feet.

When you return to the hotel, you make a beeline for the front desk. One of their regular guests is discussing something with Madame Delfin, and you stand a respectful distance away, too conscious of your appearance. You hope the Dolphin Hotel's customers aren't put off by suddenly sharing their luxury resort with a gaggle of spirit mages from across the globe; you take comfort in the fact that you don't even crack the top three for disreputability.

Finally, it's your turn to talk to her. "Madame Delfin? I'm Maria Francisca Teixeira," you say, trying to keep your Nivvean as dignified as you can without crossing the line into being ridiculous. "I was wondering if I could take advantage of your offer to contact my home. My mother will be wondering where I am," you hope, "and I should arrange for money to be available while I stay here. What banks have branches in Vindar?" Intercontinental banks will be present here, surely? It's a resort town.

The Nivvean woman inclines her head to you, as elegantly as... well, as a scion of one of Nivveas's major corporations, you suppose. "It would be our pleasure to facilitate communications with your home. Do you wish to send a message, or would you prefer realtime? I am afraid that due to the high expense we cannot make available more than ten minutes of realtime intercontinental geocommunication."

"A message will be fine," you hasten to say. Saints, if the hotel could wave off everything they were giving you for free but drew the line there, you didn't want to know how much it cost. Even ten minutes probably represented more money than you'd ever had in your life. "My home isn't set up for realtime anyway, so it's not like I could have a conversation with my mother." True, but incomplete.

Madame Delfin regards you, and you have the uncomfortable feeling that she hears more than you say. Probably necessary, in her line of work. "Of course. And there is no need to worry about Vindar's banks; the hotel is set up to support leyline transfers, so you need only furnish your bank with this information," she passes you a paper card with neatly printed numbers, "and then withdraw such funds as you need at the concierge desk. If there are any difficulties, please let me know, and we will be honored to cover reasonable expenses."

You don't want to think about what nonsense she considers reasonable on top of everything else she's doing. "I don't think that will be necessary, but thank you very much for your generosity; it's greatly appreciated." You bow as gracefully as you can.

She shows you the way to the geocommunications room, and you politely decline the hovering attendant's offer of assistance with the messaging apparatus. You know how to work one of these; you even mostly know how to build one. Then you sit at the table, tapping your pencil against your teeth while staring at the message form. Finally, you elect for simplicity: explaining to the university where you are, why you're there (though claiming bald-facedly that Anathon Grier summoned you specifically to help fight demons is profoundly surreal), and that you don't know when you will be able to return but that you can be reached here for the foreseeable future. You ask that someone tell your mother that you're safe and to pass on any messages she wishes to send, and whether it would be possible for some of your scholarship monies to be sent here so that you are not wholly reliant on Zarean charity.

You are about to leave it at that, but then have a thought: your geomantic studies are suddenly profoundly important. You don't want to send too much information about what exactly is going on at the Hellgate, but perhaps under the cover of not interrupting your studies...? After a few abortive drafts, you add a mention that there's a lot of downtime between fighting demons, and there's a local guild that surely has texts you can use, so any recommendations on topics to read up on for a better theoretical understanding would be welcome so that you don't waste your time. You even manage to tie it back to your request for the scholarship to be disbursed here, which should hopefully make that go down easier.

After sending the transmission under the watchful eye of the hotel staff, you head up to your room to freshen up. By the time you're done with your decadently long and relaxing shower, an answering message has been slipped under your door. They must have been on the lookout for contact from you; it's not every day one of their students just disappears, after all. They're more than happy to grant all your requests, please stand by for the funds to be transmitted in our next message, and...

Oh. Oh no.

Your advisor, it seems, was delighted to hear about how devoted you were to the pursuit of scholarship even in the face of mortal peril, and has given you a list of multiple texts that he is looking forward to discussing with you upon your return, along with suggested topics that he would be interested in seeing your written thoughts on.

You have homework.

It is Noon. What do you wish to do with your time?

[] Seafoam Lounge
A relaxed place for light conversation, light music, and looking out at the ocean. Near the hotel's indoor pool.
[] Hearthfire Grille
A supremely elegant kind of restaurant, walking the line between trendiness and timeless class.
[] Hotel Gardens
A calm and peaceful outdoor setting, featuring botanical splendor, local wildlife, a selection of Zarean relics, and the famous Dolphin Fountain.
[] Dueling Grounds
A secluded field in the back of the hotel grounds, set aside for the practice of dangerous or destructive magics.
[] Town Square
The most bustling, crowded part of Vindar. Buy exotic wares in the dozens of tiny stores lining the square, or enjoy some delicious greasy street food.
[] Amphisbaena Tavern
Vindar's most famously seedy bar, with a reputation that attracts some very dangerous people... and also a lot of tourists.
[] Hellgate
At the outskirts of town lies an empty field with a pulsing metaphysical anomaly right in the middle of it.
[] Concierge Desk
Xiomara Delfin has taken over the running of the concierge desk herself, the better to see to the needs of her unusual guests.
[] Widow's Walk
Miella Leistes can often be found here, staring out to sea.
[] Forge
Demetrios Harpakrides has taken over one of the Dolphin's outbuildings, transforming it into a workshop and smithy.
[] Heroes' Room: (write in four people you have not yet read up on)
The room set up for news, information-sharing, and learning more about your fellow heroes.
[] Seek Out: (write in people with whom you have a Relationship of +1 or better)
When you really want to talk to someone in particular.

[] Do your homework.
Go rustle up some textbooks from Vindar's geomancers and work on your assignments. For your sins.

For those only reading the story posts: the rules about relationship levels and timeslots have been added to the Rules Compendium threadmark for reference. The Dramatis Personae has also been updated with people's current Relationship Levels; a summary of its current state is "1 with the six people you've interacted with significantly, 0 with everyone else."

I think this is a good time for some combat practice.

Still curious about the forge.

Okay, between this and the terms of the truce it seems pretty apparent that whatever Pilpyas's magic actually is, it can provide some sort of buff(s) in addition to exerting mental influence - though most likely all as one package deal, seeing as informed consent is required for all of it rather than the truce just forbidding the mental-influence part outright & leaving the rest alone. Current best guess would be some sort of hivemind-y thing that can be useful for battle coordination, though honestly that alone seems like an insufficient force multiplier in such a small group even if used to its full potential, so there may well be other benefits too.
It takes a second, but the meaning behind the terms sinks in, and you can feel yourself blanch. In contrast, Lady Durand's face darkens. "Humaniform constructs... what have you done, necromancer?"

Interesting that Durand is the one taking particular exception here, though that may just be due to her position of assumed authority - @picklepikkl was Maria Francisca able to get a general gauge of how the rest of the heroes were reacting during this part of the conversation? Curious if Durand has particularly strong beef with necromancy or just expressed it most forcefully for other reasons.
"I do not answer to you, General," he replies, his own calm despite the way his words seem to keep getting more provocative. "I am a sovereign." Unlike you is left unsaid, but you can hear it, and if you can then probably everyone can, and you tense, your power close to hand.
Hm. That suggests that he's either split or taken over from Taranath by now, or if he hasn't, that he doesn't consider himself meaningfully her subordinate despite seeming to lose the leadership contest. And given the authority over others implied by "sovereign," he either regards his undead as his subjects (seems relatively unlikely given the other ways he refers to them, e.g. comparison with armaments rather than followers) or has reasonably strong sway at least some portion of the Zarean necromancers. Possible other source of reinforcements, depending on precisely where Graveshire is relative to here, though as we're seeing they may not be welcomed by all the other heroes. That said, for reference, @picklepikkl do we know where Graveshire is relative to here?
"We shall post requests in the town, for reports of monsters and beasts sighted close to town. You shall have aid in dispatching them; I will help you myself, if need be. This seems like something we should look into joining in on once it kicks off - monsters should be a source of practical combat experience, which we badly need, that's less trivial than minor demon extermination like we had today but lower-stakes than a full delve into the Hellgate.
Stone Lion blinks, apparently not having expected that, but Lady Durand cocks her head. "How would that work with-"

"The Prince and I tested it when I was at the University of Gavis," he interrupts. "I can sustain an apparition. It is not duplicated, but it means more can be active at once."
So, to make sure I'm following this right - Ancestral Scions have access to more total spirits than they can ordinarily sustain at any one time, and Kalgrave's Echo Caller magic can be used to support another such spirit, but the spirit so supported is still the "actual" one the Scion would normally use and so can't also be manifested by them simultaneously. Yeah? If so...
Scholars are divided as to whether these entities are genuinely the spiritual remnants of deceased humans, or merely psychic projections of the summoner's imagination; scions themselves tend to have strong feelings on this issue.
...that seems like evidence that there's at least something more afoot than just psychic projections, as I'd expect those to be just as copiable by an Echo Caller as any other magical effect. Unless they have other noted "blind spots," I suppose, in which case it could simply suggest a common element shared with said omissions.

Incidentally, this also suggests a reason Durand might be especially particular about the sanctity of the dead, if indeed she is.

Oh, and also:
All known ancestral scions come from a few famous lineages, which manifest this form of magic with great regularity; the most noteworthy of these is the royal line of Gavis.
Between this and the university in question, I think we can probably infer that Kalgrave's Princely friend was the Prince of Gavis; not immediately useful info but something to jot down for later (and further evidence of Kalgrave moving in high social circles even independently of Anathon).
Kiliona to say that requiring that would be a bad idea
Out of curiosity, what was Kiliona's argument for why this would be a bad idea? I can think of a few possibilities, from the political to the immediately practical, but I'm interested in which angle(s) he was coming from.
Someone's suspicious. Perhaps not without reason - we still don't know how or why the Hellgate appeared here. Or maybe there's something else she's looking for. Doubt we'll have an easy time getting answers out of her, considering, but we're also relatively innocuous among the heroes here so we might be able to work our way into her confidence. Certainly something I'd be interested in taking an initial swing at on the general principle of "if someone else in the room is worried about something, and you don't know what or why, you should probably be worried too."

Based on what we already know and what techniques we used in our appraisal earlier, how relevant do we expect the contents of our homework to be to investigating the geomantic phenomena around the Hellgate? Seeing as we had to be somewhat circumspect in our request, I'm not sure to what extent this is "gain immediately useful skills" versus just "keep up the obligations of ordinary life."

That said, either way, for now I'd like to focus on getting our skills up for a potential future Hellgate delve. Plus we've got good odds of running into at least Black Orchid here, in my estimation - probably going to want to blow off some steam after missing out on the mission, and if we play our cards right, helping her do that could be the foundation of a solid connection.

Or we'll get stomped into the dirt by a combat monster and she'll just be more pissed off that we weren't good opposition, but hey, you gotta take some risks.

[X] Dueling Grounds

[X] Hotel Gardens

Leucia AKA shadow dancer might be here. Bit of a shot in the dark but her excerpt was for promoting biodiversity health in some public gardens.

[X] Widow's Walk

Might as well check one Meilla

[X] Forge
Demon chicanery lets goo!! :V

Nice Chapter! We brought school supplies! Nobody killed us (socially)!

[X] Town Square

Look. Lots of magic going on, lots of danger, lots of tension yadda yadda okay that's all cool and well written and I'm interested.

But also Maria Francisca seems like the kind of gal that could head out to the streets of the town and eat some nice greasy food and not overthink the bullshit. We grew up in a poor way. Who knows, maybe we'll make some connections or hear rumors about monsters or really just eat greasy street food as is good and proper.

Like. What even kinds of things would we buy? Do we have all the school supplies needed for our homework? Do we need anything else to measure geomantic jargon? What kind of street food is common here?

Get me out in the world. See the town. Figure out how well we take to these streets which aren't ours (but are still streets, and perhaps familiar).

Town Square might be a good way to get a sense of the town's public reaction to the demon outbreak and/or how much they know.

Standard disclaimer, for everything I'm not responding to specifically I am commenting neutrally that it's an interesting thought, you know the drill.
Maria Francisca was keeping her attention on the two famous badasses who kinda looked like they were about to throw down, but the reactions she saw from e.g. Sebastian and Marika, who were behind the general, were less intense than hers.

...you've got high History and Esoterica, so I'm giving you this one for free before it comes up in a story post. Ancestral Scions tend to have a particular aversion to the desecration of the dead in general and necromancy in particular for the obvious reason of "if it turns out they're both soul-based, necromancers can straight-up rob Ancestral Scions of the connection to their families forever". The harshest penalties against necromancy in Morleas are found in Gavis, where the royal line are Ancestral Scions. Also, Evangeline has been around for a while and has as her family's remit holding a border region: odds are pretty good that the cabal wandered nearby or even through at least once over the years. So she is particularly likely both to have personal distaste for necromancy and to have personal history with necromancers.
That said, for reference, @picklepikkl do we know where Graveshire is relative to here?
Pretty far -- per Zareas Supplement here, Zareas is approximately triangular, and Graveshire is in the northwest while Vindar is in the east. Additionally, Vindar is on the coast, while Graveshire is inland. So anyone coming would take a while to get here; rather than going as the crow flies, the fastest way would be traveling downriver to the coast and then taking ship and sailing southeast.
Yeah?
That sure is consistent with observations. The only thing I'd quibble over "can ordinarily sustain" -- the cap is soft, not hard, with things like "personal power/skill" "intensity of action" and "how wiped out are you willing to be afterwards" influencing the number of spirits you might have active at a given time.
...that seems like evidence that there's at least something more afoot than just psychic projections, as I'd expect those to be just as copiable by an Echo Caller as any other magical effect. Unless they have other noted "blind spots," I suppose, in which case it could simply suggest a common element shared with said omissions.
Echo Callers are great at copying instantaneous bursts of magic, but "copying" persistent effects often goes strangely. In particular, for things like Animation where constructs are created, it's generally easier for an Echo Caller to copy the actual magic that animates them and make their own, rather than being able to "take over" already-animated constructs.

So if, hypothetically, the way Ancestral Scion magic works is a set of always-on magical effects that can then be separately invoked to manifest a particular projection, and Echo Callers can copy the invocation but not the permanent effect, they might be able to draw forth the Scion's projection in a way that leaves the projection unavailable for the Scion's own use for the duration, and that would be consistent with observations. Hypothetically.

(A great deal of papers have been published on this, generally flying between the University of Gavis and universities of whatever country wants to get one over on Gavis at that particular point in time.)
Out of curiosity, what was Kiliona's argument for why this would be a bad idea? I can think of a few possibilities, from the political to the immediately practical, but I'm interested in which angle(s) he was coming from.
Great point, I probably should have included it. I'll give it another look when I'm less fried and see if I can edit it in. But the core of Kiliona's point was that there are only two people unambiguously "from" Zareas and requiring either Steadman or Remy to be on any rift team was inflexible to the point of not working as a hard-and-fast requirement, with a dash of "and there are several people here arguably 'from' multiple places and dealing with those arguments sounds miserable."
Somewhere in between. I'll peel back the curtain a bit because I'm still in the "trying a lot of stuff and seeing if it works in reality like it did in my head" phase: if you do your homework, it will lead to useful insights down the line. Furthermore, you don't need to worry that you have to do it by Monday or forever lose the chance at those insights: if the things happen that you could have insights about before you do your homework, at the point that you do your homework you will have those insights and they will still be nontrivially useful ones. Is guaranteeing that you get those insights at the earliest possible opportunity more valuable than engaging with your fellow heroes and the stuff that might come out of that? That's up to the voters to take their best guess at. But it's neither a "go do this right now to get +3 asskicking" level of directly useful nor a "when you hit the quest epilogue one of the scenes will have an extra thumbs up" level of directly useless.

Just to finish contextualizing this - roughly how big is Zareas overall? Obviously not expecting hard numbers but in terms of, like, the closest equivalent real continent or something.

Hm. Accordingly, do Ancestral Scions get any sort of passive benefits from their spirits when they don't have them manifested? Or would the hypothetical permanent effect be just effectively "having access to these spirits to summon"?

...have any of those papers involved having a Cosmic Essence Sage attempt to interfere with an Ancestral Scion's connection to their spirits? Considering the politics on both sides of that equation I wouldn't be at all shocked if the answer is "no" but at the same time it seems like an obvious way to probe that model.

I'm sure Madame Zelfin is seeing right through Maria, and is both being courteous/compassionate in terms of not overwhelming her with what resources would be made available at need, and also, well...
claiming bald-facedly that Anathon Grier summoned you specifically to help fight demons is profoundly surreal
Madame Zelfin has realized that, should she survive, Maria Francisca Teixeira (Carvalho e Lima Mão de Ferro Santa Rita Bandeira de Mello Borges) will be a Name, someone who is a spirit mage of considerable talent, and one of the Heroes who arguably saved the world. She would be derelict in her duty to not cultivate her as at least a contact. (Which is not to say that any concern/compassion/etc won't be genuine, but they will be at least partially based in enlightened self-interest.)

Also, university gossip back home probably just got profoundly derailed.

Oh.

You monster. And doubly so, because you're making it appealing for us to force Maria to actually do it.
Also, I am betting that the advisor is a combination of over the moon with pride, and worried for Maria... And probably quietly (or not-so-quietly) smugging about his advisee being summoned by Anathon Grier.

[X] Dueling Grounds
[X] Widow's Walk
[X] Do your homework.

These are the three I'm most interested in, I think - working to shore up weaknesses in fighting, satisfying curiosity about Anathon Grier/seeing if he had any time to pass on relevant information/maybe just trying to be friendly, and playing to our strengths of looking into leyline weirdness.

If we don't eat at lunch, we should at least attend an evening meal.
I mean, we'll be eating either way, just offscreen - but I agree that hitting the Grille in the Evening timeslot seems like a solid idea. Wind down a bit for the day and hopefully catch a good few other heroes grabbing dinner. Maybe even the returning Hellgate team, if they're back by then.
