The Streaming Service Cartoon Purge

Now that feels like a very weird one, a case of extreme pruning or something. I'd love to know the reason for it, because I'm struggling to come up with one. I do hear that the guy in charge is pretty right wing, maybe enough that even a show like that could trip him up, but that feels like reaching. So my other guess is that someone or some part of the business now is locked into going "Cut more. Produce more cutting and trimming numbers, make those go up" and that's just steaming ahead.

West Wing was also a liberal show. And like it was the kind of establishment liberal we all kinda hate, but that kind of liberal is no different from a DSA card carrying socialist to the right these days.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this was at least partially or even entirely a money thing, with David Zaslav cutting the show in order to save even a little money. And because he is the King of Penny Wise and Pound Foolish, he didn't even consider the possibility that this habit of constantly cutting popular movies and tv shows could be bad in the long run: subscribers and would-be subscribers have less and less interest in paying for Max if it doesn't have the stuff they like, and show runners have less and less interest in putting their stuff on a platform likely to cut it for no real reason.

I'm not saying politics had absolutely nothing to do with this, but unless someone wants to claim Dirty Harry (which was also removed from Max) is a liberal movie I think it's fair to say there are other factors involved.

I mean there are always many factors. Politics colors decision making. But in the end these guys ARE trying to make money and are almost universally convinced they know the best way to do that.

My idea in regards to it being potentially political is that The West Wing is the show of sensible liberalism and sensible wheeling and dealing politics and has sensible bi-partisanship with sensible republicans. All things that someone in the woke scare hole might consider to be wrong, objectively and morally, or evil lies.

But, as I said, that's reaching unless we hear or see something, anything, in terms of evidence. Relentless and automatic money pinching in the system somewhere, incapable of stopping and going "Maybe the spending we would need to do now is better than not spending that money", is probably a safer bet.

The West Wing is not so progressive that a Republican president being inaugurated in a couple weeks makes a good reason to drop it, not even if that president is Donald Trump's evil doppelganger. If Trump or Musk bought HBO and shows like the West Wing started getting purged, we might have something, but at the moment we have no evidence.

Financial chicanery seems infinitely more plausible than political conspiracy theories.

The Overton window deserves a mention. These people are so right wing that liberalism seems far left.

Even liberal propaganda like the West Wing.

This is my idea that corporate owned copyrights should last no more longer then thirty years before transferring either to the public domain or to the creator

Surprising to see that WBD isn't entirely heartless.

“They curdle like milk”: WB DVDs from 2006–2008 are rotting away in their cases

Some affected discs aren’t manufactured anymore and can’t be replaced.
... In a statement to [movie news and review site] JoBlo shared on [March 4], WBD confirmed widespread complaints about DVDs manufactured between 2006 and 2008. The statement said:

"Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is aware of potential issues affecting select DVD titles manufactured between 2006 – 2008, and the company has been actively working with consumers to replace defective discs.

"Where possible, the defective discs have been replaced with the same title. However, as some of the affected titles are no longer in print or the rights have expired, consumers have been offered an exchange for a title of like-value.

"Consumers with affected product can contact the customer support team at whv@wbd.com."

It's helpful that WBD recently provided some clarity about this situation, but its statement to JoBlo appears to be the first time the company has publicly acknowledged the disc problems.

We usually are angry at Western companies for these anti-art decisions... But it seems some governments have decided to toss their hat in the ring of terribleness

'Stories About Overthrowing the Government Are No Longer Allowed'

"Per Mantan Web, China has become even more restrictive about what types of anime can be broadcast domestically. According to one of the site's sources, "stories about overthrowing the government and works depicting middle school romance are no longer allowed."

This is significant given that many iconic anime works, such as Sailor Moon, Mobile Suit Gundam, Fullmetal Alchemist and Attack on Titan, include one or both of these elements within their narratives. This, in addition to other factors, has had a profound impact on the anime industry in terms of which shows get produced and how they are presented to both global and domestic audiences"

"China's tendency towards overt -- and occasionally even humorous -- censorship has not escaped notice. One of the most prominent examples last year was Bilibili's edit of the hit Shonen Jump-based anime Dandadan (2024). Not long after the show's international debut, social media threads flooded with comments about Seiko Ayase, who had several of her cleavage shots removed. Another series of scenes replaced her lit cigarette with a lollipop." (That oddly reminds me of the
One-Piece 4Kids Edit...)

"Notably, the Chinese government has also banned many anime works outright, including well-known titles such as Elfen Lied, Tokyo Ghoul, Deadman Wonderland and Death Note."

Like I knew China's government is extremely conservative despite claiming to be

:turian:Communist:turian:

But this is a bit nuts right?

Edit: I wonder if they got a big piracy and VPN Market... If not they should

So theoretically, would a historical piece about the life and times of Mao be subject to the ban or no?
