The Enemy Within (WHF Witch Hunter Quest)

should probably step away for a bit, cause i really like this quest and if it ends like this cause we voted to stop here im ngl ill be a bit salty

There is no quest at all after Markus dies, and even of there was why would Maugan Ra do two quests on the same character? Divergences would accrue so rapidly as to make the project an incredible headache.

I'm sorry for making the plan I did. I should have made a different one, one that didn't employ violence. I could have spent the Resilience on some kind of Charm Test to deceive Etelka, or Intimidate like I'd thought of before.

Eh, you know what, I probably won't like or read the outcome (though who knows for sure), but I can pretend Markus died here easily enough and anyone who actually wants to read on can do that as well. Win-win.

Going against the grain for a bit.

When the chips come down I don't think Markus did anything wrong here (aside from not preparing the Black Peak settlement itself in case of attack instead of relying on the humans and dwafs for protection who were in no mood or position to actually help.)

This "woe is me, I was crushed by duty and obligation" is a bit tiring. Most of the events that went down here came down to Markus getting his ribs caved in, which forced him to stick around instead of being proactive. And frankly that's just the roll of the dice/life. The Break vote annoys me in this case, even as one of the people who pushed for Markus to hang up his cloak a few updates ago. Because what exactly would he have done differently had he not been a templar but a priest/investigator/dualist/noble/soldier/whatever? It was not his faith nor templar dogma that caused for complications here.

That merely leaves the other option. The one that Break accepts that Markus can neither do anything to save the downtrodden or fight the arch-enemy, and as such, that someone else is more suited for that. That he should never again up himself into a similar position because he is incapable of dealing with it.

I'm pretty sure that Maugan Ra did say they're going to make a new quest following a different character that might pick up any lingering plot threads so there's less chance of an overlap.

The events in it might get referenced in future works and certain plot threads picked up etc, but this specific quest is Markus' story and will end with him.

Nah, the situation was already desperate before you made that plan. it was either the situation that we are in or be captured, if anything at least your plan succeded in killing the witch. it's more the choices that lead to this situation that I wish we can go back and change.

Being captured could've worked! Breaking out of manacles only requires a Very Hard (-30) Strength Test, which also could've been immediately achieved with Resilience. We could've attacked her later on while her guard was down and killed her while keeping everyone alive. Maugan outright said that we could try to escape later on.

I will not be running two different but related quests or something of that nature regardless of what happens.

A theoretical successor quest (probably run in another thread? There's options there) would probably be one that followed Spätin after she graduates from the Celestial College and promptly discovers that the reason Markus stopped answering her letters is because he up and fucking died and left her with a bunch of unresolved emotional and attachment issues, like an asshole.

Hey, don't apologise; the plan ended up being narratively awesome. So honestly, you have my props for this ^^

I would argue that Break isn't Markus deciding he "can neither do anything to save the downtrodden or fight the arch-enemy" but rather that he cannot be both savior and hunter. Obviously the exact psychological break is up in the air but I don't think it is giving up everything. It is giving up being a hunter in particular. But Markus is more than a Hunter.

Edit: if Markus does live then I'd hope he'd take in Elvyra's granddaughter since she lacks other family. It isn't like he'll be having children of his body so maybe even adoption.

Ain't dying here. Nope, nope, nope. I like Markus' adventures too much to see it end here. We still have his family to talk to again, Spatin to meet once she's a full-blown Magister, and Elvyra's granddaughter to take care of. Markus' work isn't done yet.

We ain't dying here.
