You Monitor as the family leaves the theater. Four of them, an anomaly but acceptable. the two children, a boy and a girl, are excitedly play acting a sword fight. The father signals to a car to drive around to the other side of an alley. The children need to work of the energy he says to his wife.
It's a dark alley, the few homes there barred with steel. Crime Alley they call it, though the signage says Park Row. The children play possibly too loud and a light turns on in one of the windows. A man steps out from a corner. He brandishes a gun, demands the mother's pearls and the father's wallet.
The children hide behind their parents as the valuables are handed over, but the gunman doesn't leave. He steadily levels the gun and has a cruel smile. The hammer is cocked back... And the parents fall.
The children screamed and the man leveled his gun, but close sirens distracted him. He scoffed and ran. The children were found by the police.
Crime Alley became a cursed place that night.
Years passed, the twins trained. They were ready but the criminals of Gotham are a superstitious and cowardly lot. They needed to be more than human.
"Bruce, your pacing isn't helping." Mary said as she tossed pages of designs into the fireplace of the library.
"I just can't think of anything Mary!" A screech interrupted Bruce before he could continue his rant. Both siblings looked around before finding the source of the sound trapped behind a shelf of books. A hole had formed in the wall, falling into an old servant elevator.
There, on the ground, was a bat trying to move a wounded dove. Darkness and Light. A predator helping what should be prey.
Mary and Bruce shared a look. They had found their symbol.
